There are elements that I did appreciate. I thought Robert Pattinson did a great job and I felt that his character was interesting even with the small amount of screentime. Timothee Chalamet started giving a pretty good performance in the second half of the film and Joel Edgerton did good most of the time. The sets were pretty great and looked authentic to the time period. This is the same for the makeup and costumes. The costume design is the only aspect of the film I felt was fantastic. There are a handful of good shots and a single good piece of music and I think the 3rd act battle scene is well done. My biggest issue with the film is that it isn’t presented in a unique or interesting way. In short, the film doesn’t stand out. The cinematography is pretty bland and uninspired for the most part. Besides one or two shots, I don’t remember most of the scenes. The music is pretty bland and sounds a lot like stock music for the most part. The acting from everyone else ranges from decent to bad. None of the acting besides most of Chalamet’s performance and Pattinson’s performance was that great and was mostly passable. The script is pretty weak in most areas and the story generally isn’t that interesting. I was bored for a majority of the film. I’m most likely going to forget about this film before the end of the year. Overall, The King is not a bad movie but it doesn’t do anything to make it stand out from anything else I’ve seen this year. Expand

The script doesn't seem concerned with the drama of Hal moving from the tavern to the throne. And thus a talented actor is left without much to do. Prince Hal seems to land where he lands without much internal struggle. Again, it seems to be the intention of the filmmakers to focus on the story and thematics but the lack an emotional journey took power away from the ending. Expand

Did not even finish the first episode. Could not understand the garbled dialects without turning on subtitles, the history is inaccurate (King Henry IV did not make Thomas his heir and Thomas died much later fighting the French). And the plots are not well-explained or you couldn't understand them due to the garbled English. Must have been 3 or 4 shots of Henry lying in bed all the time. This seems like a mix of real history and Shakespeare's play. Don't waste your time. Either read the play or read the real history. Does not deserve 10's at all!!! "The Last Kingdom" is way better than this and I would give that series a 10 not this tripe. Expand

"Giant balls.... With a tiny kok....

HONHONHONHONHONDAHAHAHAHAH!"

'The King' is a beautifully shot movie with a dry pace. The production design and actors are the reason this movie has a pulse. Timothée Chalamet was great as a soft and quiet king. Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris were fantastic as always.

But Robert Pattinson was the real scene stealer here. He brought so much life to the screen with his incredible French accent. He was having a blast and so was I.

The rest of the movie was pretty stale and really does test your patience. The battle scenes was pretty solid, but I didn't buy for one second that Chalamet has the strength to tackle and cut through nameless soldiers.

This movie had a lot going for it, but the execution was lacking. And what a waste of Ben Mendelsohn.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Waste of 2 hours. The entire plot was falsified and historically inaccurate. They painted Henry V as a boy who disliked war and cared for his people. In reality, the real Henry V lusted to wage war, demanded many french lands, and doubled his people’s taxes when parliament denied his request for war.

The entirety of the movie was just slow still shots with zero battle. It was mostly just made up drama filler. There was a brief concluding battle that was also completely inaccurate. The Battle of Agincourt was NOT won by tricking the French cavalry into the mud with light infantry. Henry V’s real army was 80% longbow men, it was won through his archers. Also, it wasn’t the English decision to provoke the battle, they actually were blocked off and cornered into a battle. The real historical account makes a wonderful story, yet the producers decided to completely ignore all of it and film a complete lie.

Even the made-up beginning was a sham. Henry V was NOT a drunk disloyal loser as the movie portrayed. Henry V actually commanded the army with his father Henry VI (then shown as dying in the movie) against the revolting Percys. The real Henry V actually fought in that battle at age 16 and survived an arrow to the head. The movie mentioned a lot about Henry V’s brother Thomas being the true heir and dying at the battle. NOT true - thomas actually did not fight the battle and instead fought for Henry V years later in France where he was killed.

Why base an entire 2 hr+ movie around a King’s biography and yet completely falsify all the historical facts. The directors clearly have no aptitude for history and were in it just for laughs and $$.

The choreography of how they talk is incredibly exhilarating, almost as if they are fighting with their swords.

The King

David Michod, the co-writer and director, has a non-violent approach to this infamous story about war and betrayal. Neither does it come off mature nor pretentious. But what it is, is that it is really smart for its age, for its runtime, for its era that it speaks about. And these snippets of wittiness gives us enough sugar, energy to run on our own. And some might argue that these antic alike wins in a game that might not usually be perceived as a game, are not enough to make us compromise and sit through when these characters mourn or exhale continuously. But actually, this very pathos is what gives us power, them rage and purpose to stand up against the general consensus.

Everyone wants to prove that they are special. And the ones observing this era go passing by and I mean the elders, the sophisticated counsellors and not the audience. They are the ones that would be heading in the other direction. And that is how you they and you weigh in the characters and their importance. There is nothing humbling but definitely righteous to see the crux, the friendship between Joel Edgerton and Timothee Chalamet spiral out in the form of a father and a son.

And a father and a son is more appropriate title than say teacher and a student. Not that they don't learn from each other or that there is no emotion flowing between them but along with all the education that they need, they are also in desperate pursuit of a father and a son. This tied up promise, unsaid promise, is frankly beautiful. The King is smart, the people guiding him are, the people following him are, the people fighting him are. So the people watching and experiencing them better be.

The King is a good movie. But that's about all there is to say, it's good. It never really excels at anything, except maybe production design. If you like history, I would advise giving it a watch.

In Mexico there's an expression: ''Llamarada de petate'', which basically means something that at first seemed big but quickly vanished.
I think of that expression a lot when I see Timothée Chalamet's work and I say this because since his performance in Call Me by Your Name the press has promoted him as a great actor and sincerely the guy hasn't done anything remarkable yet. Beyond that film he has nothing in his repertoire.

Now he appears as the lead actor in The King. A sober and lugubrious adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV and Henry V. A historical period drama that despite having good actors, good performances and a very good production, also feels passionless and soulless, especially because the story focuses on the character of Chalamet and he just cannot give it the necessary life.
In addition to the fact that the guy lacks expressions, his histrionic limitations are quite evident in several scenes.
Robert Pattinson effortlessly steals the scenes in which they appear together and the same goes for Sean Harris who has more presence than him despite the fact that the script argumentatively favors Chamalet.

The King is not a bad film but it deserved a better actor as a main character. Maybe then it would have been much more solid because if there's something that really decreases it - Beyond that unfortunately the film will pass unnoticed on Netflix - it's the work of its lead actor.
It's not a disappointment, but it could have been much better.

A "Shakespeare for the masses" with the subtext of the intergenerational conflict in the management of power, extremely important for the "GoT" orphans. A "period drama" packaged by Netflix with a lot of skill, of course.

Robert Pattinson... holy ****

Pretty standard medieval/Shakespearean drama, that's elevated by some great performances, gorgeous cinematography and some good use of humour. The third act is easily the best part of the movie - the first two acts are SUCH A DRAG. Also, the sound design and choreography of the third act felt pretty sharp so the battles weren't too difficult to watch. Wish Robert Pattinson was in this more though. He really brought a much-needed change of pace and inserted plentiful personality. Avoid like the plague if you were bored by the Revenant. 5.7/10

It's like the Shakespeare drama just without all that genius baggage. Yes it's that irrelevant. No there is no Crispin speech in it and there's very little that this movie can offer in the sea of TV mediocrity
