Beautifully shot, written, acted and directed. The lowest press ratings (The Atlantic in particular) sound mean-spirited and dismissive. This is a fine film and Chalomée, at the very least, merits an Oscar nomination.

One of the best movies on Netflix, from the visuals to the dialogue (it may not be Shakespeare's exact words, but it captures the language of the times excellently), this is a masterpiece.

Instead of glorifying warfare, The King exposes warfare as a violent and pathetic endeavor. Henry's stoic stance for peace complements well with the scenes of men brutally butchering one another, sliding in the mud, and falling to the ground in their clumsy armor. The heroic tales of battle are absent; instead portrayed as awkward jumbled masses of bodies and horses. The end result is a spectacular anti-war film that mocks the prideful posturing of kings and princes that has caused so much violence and death through the ages. Expand

The slow onset is well compensated with a dramatic tone, away from the usual of genre. Chalamet shows that advances with certain steps to maturity, casting as a awkward, reluctant heir. One of big shots of Netflix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was confused with Hal's character. He wanted peace and was against violence, but then, he was violent with his staff, stabbing his aid who he believed to have betrayed him. Isn't this the action he despised with his father?

Perhaps the film tried to show the downfall of an innocent youth changed in violent times. With the French prince taunting Hal, and with the loss of his good friend, Hal turns to "the dark side", giving a thumbs up to war.

I would have liked to have seen him then come to realization that his darkness is wrong. Perhaps this is suggested when he starts to meet his future wife in the end.

All the mud and the stabbings in order to get through plate mail was filmed in all its glory. Pity they didn't use half-swording or mordhaus in the duel, I would have loved to see that, but no movie or tv show has yet to show it.

The big revelation to me was Timothee Chalamet- I've heard about him but this was the first time I saw him in a movie, and he is a good actor- he'll be playing Paul Atreides in Dune so I cant wait for that to come out too.

The one thing that was out of place is Robert Pattinson- he seems downright goofy in playing the French Dauphin, it felt like he was imitating Peter Seller's Inspector Closeau.

There are elements that I did appreciate. I thought Robert Pattinson did a great job and I felt that his character was interesting even with the small amount of screentime. Timothee Chalamet started giving a pretty good performance in the second half of the film and Joel Edgerton did good most of the time. The sets were pretty great and looked authentic to the time period. This is the same for the makeup and costumes. The costume design is the only aspect of the film I felt was fantastic. There are a handful of good shots and a single good piece of music and I think the 3rd act battle scene is well done. My biggest issue with the film is that it isn’t presented in a unique or interesting way. In short, the film doesn’t stand out. The cinematography is pretty bland and uninspired for the most part. Besides one or two shots, I don’t remember most of the scenes. The music is pretty bland and sounds a lot like stock music for the most part. The acting from everyone else ranges from decent to bad. None of the acting besides most of Chalamet’s performance and Pattinson’s performance was that great and was mostly passable. The script is pretty weak in most areas and the story generally isn’t that interesting. I was bored for a majority of the film. I’m most likely going to forget about this film before the end of the year. Overall, The King is not a bad movie but it doesn’t do anything to make it stand out from anything else I’ve seen this year. Expand

It's directed by David Michod, who is most known for Animal Kingdom. The movie is about a young prince called Hal, who is more interested in getting drunk and sleeping around then being involved with the crown. Hal's forced into the role of King after his father dies and must learn to navigate the rocky waters of politics involved in the world of royalty. Timothee Chalamet plays the role well; his ability to go from vulnerable to rageful, to go from uninterested to inspirational, is excellent. Joel Edgerton plays Hal's friend and mentor Sir John Flagstaff. The dynamic between them is good, but it could've been great if they played it out a little more. Robert Pattinson plays the young French Prince, and he is probably my favourite part of the film. The scene that introduces his character is very memorable. Sean Harris plays the advisor to Hal; his performance is understated but essential, a scene that takes place later in the film involving him rivals Robert Pattinson's introduction. The cinematography is excellent, in particular during a scene where the English are unleashing hell on the French Kingdom. The shots of the trebuchets firing through the night sky are downright beautiful. The fight choreography is excellent too. There is an authenticity to how they shot the fights, not only with the gritty and gory realism but also with how the battles played out with hundreds of men wearing cumbersome and limiting armour. Medieval battles looked more like a rugby match, with warriors battling it out in a tight huddle, and that's what they captured here. David Michod directs well here, mainly when melds both a stunning visual aesthetic with the dark and gritty. Unfortunately, the score is generic and forgettable, that and the missed opportunity to flesh out the dynamic between Hal and Flagstaff are my main gripes with the movie. All in all, I recommend the film. I hope many people watch it, so Netflix continues to make more movies with this quality. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best medieval films I've ever seen, with the most brutal and somewhat realistic depiction of warfare at the time at least from what all I've seen. From people using blunt weapons against armored foes, to using daggers to stab in between the chinks in armor, both of which I rarely see in such films. The scene where the French Dauphin remarks that they will make Agincourt famous for slaugtering the English army is also a good laugh, if you know a bit about medieval history and battles. Expand

Even theThe film this first brought to mind was Warren Beatty's "Reds", not that they share many narrative similarities, but they both tell the story of men overwhelmed by their place in history, emboldened by it and, in many ways, betrayed. Even the look of the film echoes some of the work done by Vittorio Storaro in the earlier film; Adam Arkapaw is a brilliant young cinematographer and a future film bro god, I'm sure.

Henry V is not one of the Shakespeare plays I've read or seen (though now I want to watch the Branagh), so I came into this quite unaware of what was to come and in the early going, I wasn't sold on Chalamet's take as a young wayward prince who despised his father ("the monster") and the transition from outcast to king comes so quickly, it doesn't give us much time to adapt. Before we know it, young King Henry is insulted by a gift from King Charles of France and convinced to take his country to war by his minions. But once he does take the crown, his ascent from boy king to leader of men becomes more urgent and convincing. Aided by his close friend, John Falstaff, they are soon crossing the channel to wage war and gain the respect that can only come by sacrificing hundreds of young men all for god and country.

"The King" raises many questions about the responsibility of leadership and the hell it can unleash in the wrong hands, but it struggles to answer them. Falstaff's advice can only go so far before the great battle of Agincourt is upon us and, in 2019 when we're all accustomed to the cries of draining the swamp, Michod shoves his soldiers right into it, perhaps an unintentional metaphor, but one that serves the film when it badly needs it.

Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris are fantastic as the yin and yang to Chalamet's king Henry. Ben Mendehlson and Thibault de Montalembert (from the fun French series "Call My Agent") are the opposing kings whose animosity is handed down to Hal. Lily-Rose Depp has a great scene at the end of the film that brings a lot of the proceedings together. The rest of the cast, including Tom Glynn-Carney, Thomasin McKenzie and Ivan Kaye, are all excellent in their brief roles. Then there's Robert Pattinson as the French Dauphin, son of King Charles. From earlier reviews, I expected the accent to be a bit more outrageous, but I think it suited his character.

All other technical aspects are top notch: directing, score, editing, costumes, production design. There's some solid stuff there and if this was a conventional theatrical release, its Oscar chances would have to be improved.

In the end, a lot of this is the Timmy show, and the main reason I would watch this in the first place. Taking this role is a shrewd move for the young actor following his softer turns in Call Me by Your Name and Beautiful Boy. He smolders throughout and comes close to being a spoiled pout, but it never takes, and by the time he's leading his men into battle, I believed him completely. He is one of those actors who is capable of expressing great emotion without the gnashing of teeth and histrionics that weighs down others. I have no doubt that he will be one of the great actors and movie stars of his direction. I'd sure as hell follow him into the breach.

Firstly and probably most importantly, its a complete re-write of history, I mean honestly they get almost every single aspect of the story wrong. This lack of basic attention to the history of the time also ties into the second disapointing part, the abysmal battle at the end of the movie, it literaly made no sense at all from a story or tactical standpoint. Unfortunately the movie is also ludicrously long for the minimal story contained within and at the same time felt horribly truncated in terms plot and character development. On top of all this the pacing is extremley stop-start with fairly considerable jumps in character motivation and plot points.

The points i've given it are for the top notch set/prop production and some of the cinematography. Avoid this movie if you care about history and/or your own time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly cannot fathom how anyone considers this so much as a decent movie. Let me sum up the good parts: the lighting is good, the acting is fine overall, the cinematography is generally decent with a handful of god awful shots. With that out of the way, let me state this movie's biggest problem; this is a near two and a half hour long movie that has less narrative content that a 20 minute episode of a children's cartoon. Here is a summary: The king is about to die but his eldest son is a drunk so he wants to give the position to his younger son, but the younger son dies so the eldest son becomes king. The movie takes the entire first HOUR to say that. I would say about 60% of that hour could be cut with zero impact to the plot in any way, shape, or form. Then it takes the next half hour to give the King a goal, confirm he is a pacifist, use trebuchet on a castle, and introduce our main antagonist an hour into the film with about 2 minutes of screen time. Then we spend the next 15 minutes quite literally walking through a forest to discover a big enemy force. Then there is another minute long scene with the antagonist, the worst medieval battle I've ever seen with tactics that make no sense, and then the antagonist is killed by extras because he slipped in the mud. We are now at about 115 minutes. What's the next 25 minutes, you may ask? People talking about the stuff that we just watched and then the King gets scolded for being a war monger even though he is a pacifist. This movie could have been an hour long episode of GoT but decided to spend an hour and half accomplishing absolutely nothing with countless dead shots, conversations that lead no where and mean nothing, and B roll. On top of all of this the character of the King makes zero sense and flips back and forth in personality between just about every scene. I also cannot overstate how awful the battle at the end was. They build it up to be a big, brutal battle where the enemy is countered because there is some mud. There is no blood, no limbs, no screams of death, no fires, nothing; it was the least convincing battle I have ever seen in any movie of any type of any genre. Even showing the aftermath there are a few dozen men laying in mud; no wounded men screaming, no blood-soaked grass, no limbs, no men stuck on spears, nothing. Also, the King here kills a few people in the 'big battle' by punching them in the face...while they were wearing helmets. Absolute drivel. Expand

Did not even finish the first episode. Could not understand the garbled dialects without turning on subtitles, the history is inaccurate (King Henry IV did not make Thomas his heir and Thomas died much later fighting the French). And the plots are not well-explained or you couldn't understand them due to the garbled English. Must have been 3 or 4 shots of Henry lying in bed all the time. This seems like a mix of real history and Shakespeare's play. Don't waste your time. Either read the play or read the real history. Does not deserve 10's at all!!! "The Last Kingdom" is way better than this and I would give that series a 10 not this tripe. Expand

"Giant balls.... With a tiny kok....

HONHONHONHONHONDAHAHAHAHAH!"

'The King' is a beautifully shot movie with a dry pace. The production design and actors are the reason this movie has a pulse. Timothée Chalamet was great as a soft and quiet king. Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris were fantastic as always.

But Robert Pattinson was the real scene stealer here. He brought so much life to the screen with his incredible French accent. He was having a blast and so was I.

The rest of the movie was pretty stale and really does test your patience. The battle scenes was pretty solid, but I didn't buy for one second that Chalamet has the strength to tackle and cut through nameless soldiers.

This movie had a lot going for it, but the execution was lacking. And what a waste of Ben Mendelsohn.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Waste of 2 hours. The entire plot was falsified and historically inaccurate. They painted Henry V as a boy who disliked war and cared for his people. In reality, the real Henry V lusted to wage war, demanded many french lands, and doubled his people’s taxes when parliament denied his request for war.

The entirety of the movie was just slow still shots with zero battle. It was mostly just made up drama filler. There was a brief concluding battle that was also completely inaccurate. The Battle of Agincourt was NOT won by tricking the French cavalry into the mud with light infantry. Henry V’s real army was 80% longbow men, it was won through his archers. Also, it wasn’t the English decision to provoke the battle, they actually were blocked off and cornered into a battle. The real historical account makes a wonderful story, yet the producers decided to completely ignore all of it and film a complete lie.

Even the made-up beginning was a sham. Henry V was NOT a drunk disloyal loser as the movie portrayed. Henry V actually commanded the army with his father Henry VI (then shown as dying in the movie) against the revolting Percys. The real Henry V actually fought in that battle at age 16 and survived an arrow to the head. The movie mentioned a lot about Henry V’s brother Thomas being the true heir and dying at the battle. NOT true - thomas actually did not fight the battle and instead fought for Henry V years later in France where he was killed.

Why base an entire 2 hr+ movie around a King’s biography and yet completely falsify all the historical facts. The directors clearly have no aptitude for history and were in it just for laughs and $$.

The King

David Michod, the co-writer and director, has a non-violent approach to this infamous story about war and betrayal. Neither does it come off mature nor pretentious. But what it is, is that it is really smart for its age, for its runtime, for its era that it speaks about. And these snippets of wittiness gives us enough sugar, energy to run on our own. And some might argue that these antic alike wins in a game that might not usually be perceived as a game, are not enough to make us compromise and sit through when these characters mourn or exhale continuously. But actually, this very pathos is what gives us power, them rage and purpose to stand up against the general consensus.

Everyone wants to prove that they are special. And the ones observing this era go passing by and I mean the elders, the sophisticated counsellors and not the audience. They are the ones that would be heading in the other direction. And that is how you they and you weigh in the characters and their importance. There is nothing humbling but definitely righteous to see the crux, the friendship between Joel Edgerton and Timothee Chalamet spiral out in the form of a father and a son.

And a father and a son is more appropriate title than say teacher and a student. Not that they don't learn from each other or that there is no emotion flowing between them but along with all the education that they need, they are also in desperate pursuit of a father and a son. This tied up promise, unsaid promise, is frankly beautiful. The King is smart, the people guiding him are, the people following him are, the people fighting him are. So the people watching and experiencing them better be.

The King is a good movie. But that's about all there is to say, it's good. It never really excels at anything, except maybe production design. If you like history, I would advise giving it a watch.

The King depicts the life of one of the more remarkable kings of England: Henry the Fifth, a man immortalized in a play by Shakespeare. He wasn't king for long, but almost succeeded in joining France and England into one union after remarkable successes on the field of battle, of which the battle of Agincourt in 1415 is the most notable. History would certainly have been different had that lasted. Given all that, it should be easy to make a movie of this grander than life figure. No need to embellish or twist things to make an otherwise boring historical figure into something watchable. Alas, the movie makers beg to differ. Let's toss all that boring historical stuff aside and just make up new things as we go along. And throw in some Holy Grail things, like dirty peasants, down trodden poor clothing and anything else that have been cliched to death by now.

It is fascinating to see them turn Henry into an erratic angsty teen that would fit right in with the Twilight saga cast. Henry, leader of men, the warrior king, mumbles his lines and sits in depressed silence throughout the film. Into the breach once more, he mumbles and listlessly waves his sword. His men stare at him. Sorry, did you say something?

The movie is almost drained of any color, like it is shot on an overcast or rainy day. The characters are drained of any liveliness as well. Like half dead men they stumble about. They look sick, or undead, or drunk. Oh... look.... the enemy.... Let's gape at them for a while. That movies aren't well versed in depicting war will not surprise you, but that they even get the most basic things wrong is amazing. Like having your fully equipped knights march on foot overland without any cavalry screen to find out where your enemy is. At one moment the column of men, and it is actually a long column without any flanking forces, comes up on a hill and then somehow Henry senses the French army is behind the hill. And by Jove, they are! And neither army has any scouts out, or screening forces or camp guards. I swear that the French army didn't even notice that one figure in plain sight on the top of the hill. Why make a movie about a king who spends most of his live on the battlefield while you have totally no understanding of how war is waged? Or, apparently, no interest whatsoever to ask people who do know? I bet there are enough people in England who can tell you how to avoid the most basic of errors? But all of this isn't the worst about this movie. The worst is how amazingly uninspiring it is and weird. For some reason the French king is disdainful of Henry. Apparently it is, so we are told, because of Henry's rowdy live before he became king. Let's just rewind this a little. Henry is a lazy layabout who spends his live whoring, drinking and doing nothing much until he becomes king. And then he changes from that into an experienced warrior who bests experienced knights in duels and defeats one of the most powerful armies in medieval Europe. Picture that.

SO the French king thinks Henry to be a weak king and thus mocks him, sends assassins and plots against him. And eventually, Henry has enough and thus invades France to teach their kind a lesson.

So far the totally made up history of the movie. In reality the story was different. The rumor that Henry was a whoring drunk was just that: a rumor. In fact he was well experienced in war. And the reason he invades France is not because he was insulted, but because he claimed the throne of France.

It baffles why you need to twist history if history is good enough to tell an engaging story? Anyway.. this uninspired movie exasperates. Maybe they should call it: the mumbler saga: breaking history.

Superior action drama follows the rise of king Henry as he engages in a campaign to war with France. The casting cinematography and screenplay are superb.

I loved Animal Kingdom. I am so glad I watched the King. It had such beautiful cinematography, fantastic performances (especially from Timothée Chalamet and Joel Edgerton) and brilliant direction. It felt much more realistic than other historical dramas, especially in battle showing that awkward jumbled mass of bodies, horses and mud. My only complaint, I wish they had fleshed out the relationship between Timothée Chalamet's and Joel Edgerton's characters more. Expand

In Mexico there's an expression: ''Llamarada de petate'', which basically means something that at first seemed big but quickly vanished.
I think of that expression a lot when I see Timothée Chalamet's work and I say this because since his performance in Call Me by Your Name the press has promoted him as a great actor and sincerely the guy hasn't done anything remarkable yet. Beyond that film he has nothing in his repertoire.

Now he appears as the lead actor in The King. A sober and lugubrious adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV and Henry V. A historical period drama that despite having good actors, good performances and a very good production, also feels passionless and soulless, especially because the story focuses on the character of Chalamet and he just cannot give it the necessary life.
In addition to the fact that the guy lacks expressions, his histrionic limitations are quite evident in several scenes.
Robert Pattinson effortlessly steals the scenes in which they appear together and the same goes for Sean Harris who has more presence than him despite the fact that the script argumentatively favors Chamalet.

The King is not a bad film but it deserved a better actor as a main character. Maybe then it would have been much more solid because if there's something that really decreases it - Beyond that unfortunately the film will pass unnoticed on Netflix - it's the work of its lead actor.
It's not a disappointment, but it could have been much better.

A "Shakespeare for the masses" with the subtext of the intergenerational conflict in the management of power, extremely important for the "GoT" orphans. A "period drama" packaged by Netflix with a lot of skill, of course.

Robert Pattinson... holy ****

Pretty standard medieval/Shakespearean drama, that's elevated by some great performances, gorgeous cinematography and some good use of humour. The third act is easily the best part of the movie - the first two acts are SUCH A DRAG. Also, the sound design and choreography of the third act felt pretty sharp so the battles weren't too difficult to watch. Wish Robert Pattinson was in this more though. He really brought a much-needed change of pace and inserted plentiful personality. Avoid like the plague if you were bored by the Revenant. 5.7/10

Beautiful, intelligent retelling of this epic tale. Fantastic ensemble performances all round and a deeply truthful performance from Chalamet as Hal. Could have had a few lighter moments early on in Eastcheap. Sublime cinematography.

It's like the Shakespeare drama just without all that genius baggage. Yes it's that irrelevant. No there is no Crispin speech in it and there's very little that this movie can offer in the sea of TV mediocrity
