Only 8 because of being an unnecessary part that is obviously a money grab, if not it would've been perfect for me (or almost). Go see it or wait for it on DVD because of the money grab, but it is worth it at least - if you try to forget the two-parts thing. Expand

The third book did not need to be split into 2 films if this was to be the outcome of the Part 1 instalment. The lack of excitement is not my reasoning for this rating. The film was flush with intrigue and theme and emotion and decent enough acting and dialogue. It has enough meaningful lessons on how propaganda is just as important as fighting battles, if not more, to enlighten anyone. But those elements, unfortunately, are all this film had to offer. No conceivable climax or conclusion, no fulfillment at the end of this 2 hours. It did not make me want to see the next film, it made me want it to come to some kind of ending already. I wish I could go back, and wait for the Part 2 to be released, so I could watch them back to back. Seeing this was a waste of time. Expand

If you're not mature enough to handle the depth and darkness of this film, then you aren't going to like it

The film actually makes you feel emotional.

(2) Visually it is very striking and original. Even the real-life sets were very interesting. (3) The most underrated piece of this movie was the makeup. So much attention to detail!
Now on to my problems... (1) Donald Sutherland was somewhat over-the-top in his portrayal of President Snow, as opposed to the quiet subtler character in the first two movies. (2) Lots of exposition in the first act.
All in all it was a very entertaining movie and I would recommend seeing it. 6/10

A different film in the Hunger Games story a film based on political intrigue, and propaganda. While I found myself missing the games, I also can't wait to see how the story ends. A-

The movie lacks any real emotional connection with Katniss and company. Once again The Hunger Games expects us to care about a host of underdeveloperd characters (like Liam Hemsworth for example who had about 5 minutes screen time in the previous two outings). The film panders to teenagers full of angst. The film hits a few mildly interesting notes on propaganda and power, however these are drowned out by Katniss listening to her hormones rather than her head. This film is not a '10'. I haven't read the books so I like many others don't care if Mockingjay - Part 1 resonates with those who have Expand

IMockingjay Part I surprised the h*ll out of me. This film was able to deliver a tightly written story that was flawlessly paced without sacrificing content from the book, brought out the best of every character, and was really well shot. I often complain that film adaptations of a book rush through their story leaving out various character and plot points well this film doesn’t. I thought that splitting Mockingjay into two movies was a dumb cash grab and that’s probably what Lionsgate thought to but this movie made it work unbelievable well. This is one of the best film adaptations of a book I’ve ever seen. The film stayed true to the book without taking out anything significant and nothing was underdeveloped. The quality of this film makes me wish other film adaptations would follow similar suit and split their books into multiple films as it could lead to better storytelling (ex. the later Harry Potter films). Lionsgate’s financial decision not only has brought them more money but a better story than it would have otherwise. This film reminded me how much I loved the first half of Mockingjay and showed how to make a great adaptation of book. This might be spur of the moment but I might even go so far as to say not only is this the best of the franchise but this is right behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy as one of the best film adaptations of a book ever. This is the third book the one that got weakest reception combine that with threequels tending to suck this film shouldn’t have been this awesome but it was. Well done Lionsgate well done. Curious if Mockingjay Part II will follow similar suit. Hope so because as of right now this is one of the best film franchises I’ve ever seen being consistently good in a way that I have not seen in other franchises. Expand

Not here. There is so much nothing happening in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 that the film feels like money-making, fan-exploiting filler. In the hands of more skilled filmmakers, a tight and tense 20-30 minute introduction in front of Part 2 could do a greater service to the franchise than this 2+ hour chore. Expand

I has an unfulfillment—as evident in a lot of sequels caught in midway-'til-the-finale hell—that volunteers it as the weakest contender in The Hunger Games trilogy thus far. Despite—as usual—the touching performances and meaningfully darker atmosphere in comparison to its predecessors, Mockingjay, Pt. I obviously lacks a lot of action and melodrama foreseen in the future once the series' final installment arrives. Perhaps with age (and a completed second-half), the minor disappointments will wither away like the [SPOILER, sort of] ashes of District 12. R.I.P., Philip Seymour Hoffman. Expand
