The majority would argue that splitting the final instalment of the series into two parts is an unnecessary money spinning gimmick. Whilst the minority would argue that it allows the story to breath. Regardless of whether it's for financial gain or not on the studios part, ultimately as a viewer I want to be entertained and in terms of content I want value for money with any film. But as a standalone film I'm not entirely sure if Mockingjay: Part 1 justifies itself. Considering it's lengthy running time, this so called split down the middle Part 1 doesn't seem to cover much content. But then again this penultimate instalment of the series is telling a very different story to it's predecessors. And although this film does feature integral information, as a viewing experience it does sacrifice action and thrills for politics and character development. Jennifer Lawrence is strong again in the leading role. I wouldn't go as far as saying this is her weakest performance in the role to date, but she doesn't seem to have as much to do this time round. The supporting cast benefits from the lack of set pieces though and the screen time is well balanced between all of returning and new characters. Most notably Liam Hemsworth who has much more involvement and Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright's input is more integral. Of the new cast members Julianne Moore and Natalie Dormer in particular are welcome additions. For all the characters we don't see so much of, their screen time will certainly be made up in Part 2. Once again Francis Lawrence's overall direction is impressive and even though the set pieces are limited, for what there is of them they are all enjoyable. Personally what Part 1 archives most though is a greater sense of scale and exploration into the wider country of Panem. Overall I was entertained, interested and there's no doubt that this platform sets up what should be a superior second instalment and an incredible series finale. But as a standalone film this isn't as re-watchable as it's predecessor and it's my least favourite of the series to date. Expand

With a lobster, you first have to crack open its shell to get to the sweet meat, but you know it's worth it in the end. Think of this movie as the shell you had to crack open first to get to Mockingjay Part 2, where a strong, dramatic climax is bound to happen, and it will all be worth it. Expand

Jennifer Lawrence delivers an emotionally intense, but believable Katniss Everdeen. The Characters portrayed were intelligent and believable. At no point did they make choices that would seem illogical or out of place, simply to drive the plot forward... (with one small exception) like in so many movies these days.

The movie was genuinely inspiring, and generally unpredictable. Leaving the audience squirming in their seats as they try to anticipate the coming scenes. Certainly I am glad to have never read the books, because knowing how things would have played out would have ruined so much of the suspense and intensity. At no point was I bored, choosing to hold my bladder for the final half our, so as not to miss a moment.

EXTREME SPOILERS AHEAD, only for those that have already seen the movie:

My only small gripe, the only thing that makes this movie not completely perfect, (and this is certainly a subjective opinion) is President snow's choice to allow the rescue-team to recover the tributes from the capitol. Sure, one of them had a small chance to kill Katnis, sure she would feel emotional trauma at the pain inflicted on Peta, but I imagine it would have been a lot more effective to execute them, than to give them such a moral boosting victory and allowing them to save more important figure-heads of the rebellion. This decision did not seem as smart, nor as sociopathic as I imagine President Snow to be. I can live with writing this off as President snow being rather demented and therefor somewhat unpredictable, but not without a little reservation.

Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 is an entertaining movie. Though there was barely any action in the movie and less like a hunger games movie, it was still fun to watch. It is still a huge step down from Catching Fire with a twist.

Wonder if that's where ISIS got their idea of doing televised atrocities so they can manipulate us. One critic said this was the first Hunger Games movie with meat, and they're right. They complained that Mockingjay should have been one movie instead of two and that makes me a bit worried about my movie experience. Gladly I really enjoyed the movie a lot as a fan of The Hunger Games.

Sure, it has less action than the previous two movies. I am not quite surprised that some people who didn’t read the books got really bored watching the movie. But I am quite surprised that some book readers got bored watching the movie. They should have known that the first half of the book is more on dialogue than action.

The movie used its 2 hours and 5 minutes length very well. I was amazed how every detail in the first half of the book was translated to the big screen while also adding new scenes outside Katniss’ point of view in the books. They don’t feel like fillers at all, they felt important to the narrative and that is really good when you add new scenes never featured in the books.

Though Francis Lawrence did not re-imagine the way he directed Catching Fire in this movie, his direction is amazing in this movie. I love how dedicated he was in directing in this movie, especially the way he directed the propaganda videos for the movie.

Speaking of propaganda videos, it turned out to be much better than I expected. Some people say it’s really cheesy but that’s the point of a propaganda video, they’re cheesy and one sided. I have seen some North Korean propaganda videos to back this up. I really want to see the propaganda videos in their own full form. I hope it’s one of the extras for the movie when it comes out on home media.

The cast performances are excellent in this movie. Every actor and actress in this movie did a perfect job portraying their characters. Of course, Jennifer Lawrence did another great job portraying the character that made her a household name. It’s nice to see the new actors in this trilogy like Julianne Moore and Natalie Dormer in this movie. I can’t wait to see more of them in Part 2. Despite his short time appearance, Josh Hutcherson did his best acting ever as Peeta in this movie. He is no longer the pretty boy anymore and he is now a better actor than he was in the first movie. Also, I am glad Effie is in this movie. In the book, she only appears in one or two scenes which is in the near end of the book while the District 13 version of Effie named Fluvia takes her place. Elizabeth Banks played Effie so good that Effie as a character is likable for the fans. So it’s nice to see Effie taking over Fluvia’s role because Fluvia is not very likable compared to Effie.

The movie ended pretty well to leave us hanging without being anti-climatic. Too bad we have to wait for a year to see the finale.

I wouldn’t say this movie is better than Catching Fire because of its lack of action scenes but the penultimate chapter of The Hunger Games trilogy is entertaining with its compelling political themes, every book detail featured in the movie that will delight the book readers like me, excellent direction, excellent cast performance and an ending that makes you want more.

The films have a more and more complex plot as they go on. This movie is about the bigger picture and is grittier, tension filled, has lots of strategy involved, addresses how a full-fledged revolution is born and works on a much higher level IMHO. I thought this was the best of the 3. (Did I miss Effie's outrageous outfits? Of course, but seeing a stripped down Effie who has defected and seeing how she copes living in an underground bunker without her wigs and costumes was actually more satisfying.) Expand

It touches on someWhether or not it was actually necessary to make the final Hunger Games book into two movies I cannot say. However I can say that they made great use of the extra time and created a movie any Hunger Games fan can enjoy. It touches on some deep themes (for instance use of propaganda) and gives us some great character interactions all while building up for the end.

It's not as action-packed as the previous movies. Something that will disappoint those who are looking for reasons to hate on the series. However instead it chooses to focus on more emotional character moments and dark scenarios that show the horror the rebellion is inflicting on the common people as well as our main heroes.

It ends on a note that has me dying to see the next, final movie. Hunger Games fans are in for a treat. It certainly does give ammunition to those who dislike the series, but by focusing on these negative aspects and choosing to ignore the positive ones they are missing out. I've never read any of the books so I can say that the movie stands well on it's own. You don't need to have a love for the book to enjoy this movie.

If you've enjoyed the previous movies I highly doubt you'll dislike this one. Those who haven't enjoyed the series, why are you even here? It's another excellent Hunger Games movie. One that I give a 9.1/10.

They don't realize that the games are just a small part of what is happening in Suzanne Collins futuristic world of Panem. If you've only seen the first film, and you're thinking that the rest are just the same thing in another setting, you couldn't be more wrong. Normally I would give a synopsis of the story before I review the film, but it's difficult to do without spoilers, so I will say, that Mockingjay couldn't be more different than the other films/books. There are no games, but the story does follow some of the people you met in the games. Once again, this film is like a page for page telling of the book in such a way that I've never seen before or since. When you read a book, often times you get pictures in your head of people, places, and things. When those films are transferred to the screen, most of the time, what you pictured in your head is not what you're seeing on the screen. The Hunger Games is different, because it really is like Suzanne Collins was in my head when I was reading the book and transferred my thoughts to film. It's what I loved about the first two films, and that hasn't changed in the third movie, despite a new Director. Once again, Jennifer Lawrence stars and continues to be the perfect choice to play Katniss Everdeen. Years ago, when I first read the Hunger Games books, I thought to myself that if this ever became a movie Jennifer Lawrence would be the perfect choice to play Katniss and apparently Collins had the same thought. Lawrence is the focus of the film and with all of America and Panem watching her, the Mockingjay shines, as both the face of innocence and as a leader to her people. I've read a lot of books before I've seen their film adaptations, but never has a story jumped so vividly from the pages to the screen. This series continues to be exciting, inspiring, and just plain terrific. If you're the kind of person who is turned off by sequels, don't let that stop you from catching up with the Hunger Games, because every film is just as good, if not better than the film before it. Set up a second movie that will be focused on the more combat heavy/action packed finale. That is not to say it was a good idea to split the story into two movies, but given the choice they did a pretty good job.

My only beef is that they did not do a good enough job showcasing the conflict between the characters. The third book was very sombre and full of distrust. The movie, though dark at points, didn't really capture all that you read, where previous movies they did.

For people complaining that it was a cash-grab or not really capturing the sense of the story, they are just complaining that the movie is split in two. They are right in the sense of it being a cash grab, but I am at least glad they made the movie well unlike the Harry Potter series which butchered the final two movies and final story.

Whilst it zips through much of the slightly tedious entry plot-line to the book, it does a great job of setting up the gist of the story, while focussing on the goose-bump moments. When Katniss sings the Hanging Tree, and when she visits the hospital in a warring district, she almost out does her earlier performances, however, the one area where there should have been seriously fantastic acting, but was lacking was when she delivrs her you burn with us line. Yet despite these drawbacks, the film is still an incredible attempt at a split film (especially when compared to something like the first Harry Potter finale film - boring and made up of 9/10 of the book's plot, whilst the second was almost half made up of the final battle, so protracted, it could have been real-time). Therefore, all in all I have given it a 10, yet not quite so good as Catching Fire, which was the best in the film series (in my opinion). Expand

That is a very unique talent, i cannot put into words how much i love this movie, and how much i appreciate the fact he got all of the emotions and more into the movie, and like i said, possibly made it better than the book, there are so many extra scenes added and so many little details added to it to make it so special, i am sad that unlike the other two i did not manage to get the two disk version (If it was made for this film that is), but yes, i am very grateful we got him as a director as no one could have done a better job than he has!
But moving onto the movie itself, like i have been saying, it is very very good, the emotions you feel, the details, the characters, everything, there may be some faults and people will be harsh to it, but it is one of the best movies i have seen, probably the best in that genre of movie!

Despite—as usual—the touching performances and meaningfully darker atmosphere in comparison to its predecessors, Mockingjay, Pt. Perhaps with age (and a completed second-half), the minor disappointments will wither away like the [SPOILER, sort of] ashes of District 12. R.I.P., Philip Seymour Hoffman. Expand

IMockingjay Part I surprised the h*ll out of me. This film was able to deliver a tightly written story that was flawlessly paced without sacrificing content from the book, brought out the best of every character, and was really well shot. I often complain that film adaptations of a book rush through their story leaving out various character and plot points well this film doesn’t. I thought that splitting Mockingjay into two movies was a dumb cash grab and that’s probably what Lionsgate thought to but this movie made it work unbelievable well. This is one of the best film adaptations of a book I’ve ever seen. The film stayed true to the book without taking out anything significant and nothing was underdeveloped. The quality of this film makes me wish other film adaptations would follow similar suit and split their books into multiple films as it could lead to better storytelling (ex. the later Harry Potter films). Lionsgate’s financial decision not only has brought them more money but a better story than it would have otherwise. This film reminded me how much I loved the first half of Mockingjay and showed how to make a great adaptation of book. This might be spur of the moment but I might even go so far as to say not only is this the best of the franchise but this is right behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy as one of the best film adaptations of a book ever. This is the third book the one that got weakest reception combine that with threequels tending to suck this film shouldn’t have been this awesome but it was. Well done Lionsgate well done. Curious if Mockingjay Part II will follow similar suit. Hope so because as of right now this is one of the best film franchises I’ve ever seen being consistently good in a way that I have not seen in other franchises. Expand

When the first one came out I knew nothing about it except that the
books were quite popular. Needless to say my first viewing of the first
one I enjoyed it a lot but also was disturbed that it was considered a
story for young adults. Now skip ahead and I loved Catching Fire and
for me Mockingjay part 1 is every bit as good as Catching Fire in its
own ways. It may not have the action that made the first 2 such good
movies but where it lacks in action it makes up for with excellent
acting and a compelling story. The war is beginning and the finale
looks to be glorious. This is a dark and morose movie. You wont find
hardly any smiles and very few laughs but thats not a bad thing.

We are being thrust into a world where the Government is corrupt and a
civil war is brewing, it would seem odd if it wasn't occasionally if not
mostly depressing. But its not the kind of depressing that is going to
make you leave the theater sad, no its going to make you leave the
theater hungry for more. I care so much for these characters that I am
finding myself heavily invested in their struggle. Katniss is in a dark
place in this movie as she finds herself the reluctant symbol of the
rebellion against the Capital. Its odd that after all she's done she
doesn't realize her importance or at least doesn't seem to want the
importance. She's the reluctant hero and Im starting to get a martyr
vibe. It was a treat once again to see Phillip Seymore Hoffman grace
the screen in what is his last fully completed movie. He filmed all but
one scene for the second part. Julianne Moore joins the cast as the
leader of the rebellion, President Coin and she is a welcome treat.
It's nice this franchise was able to lock in such powerhouse actors,
just shows that they believe in the material.

This movie isn't going to satisfy action junkies and some may feel that
overall not much happens to move the story forward but I believe there
is enough going on here to keep you entertained from start to finish. I
didn't want it to end and am not looking forward to the long months of
counting the days until I get to see the finale to this brilliant
series.

There are no more games, so the movie focuses on the interplay between Katniss and the Capital, and trying to get the remaining districts on board with the rebellion. The installment is very faithful to the book, and the look and feel was exactly as I pictured it when I read it. As a stand alone film it may not be successful, but who wants to watch one film in the middle of a series without watching the rest of the series? Personally I was never bored watching it. A little depressed, maybe, but The Hunger Games is not an uplifting series to begin with. Jennifer Lawrence was stellar as usual, and carries the entire film. I also liked Julianne Moore as President Coin and Elizabeth Banks as Effie. Women actors are really dominating this series. The look of the film is also terrific. If you read the books I think you will enjoy this latest installment. Expand

For those of you that didn't read the book you will be somewhat disappointed as it isn't about the Hunger Games, but more about the uprising of the districts and the revolution taking place. As I have enjoyed the first two movies, I thought once again much thought has taken place with the casting as they have been true to the characters in the book. Also much to my surprise, the 3rd has taken the time to be true to the setting and the scenery depicted in the 3rd book. Everything about the movie was done really well. The special effects and action sequences were top notch and the continually increased budget is evident here especially. The acting was fantastic and the setting was detailed and felt incredibly real. Even all of the little emotional elements delivered perfectly. The real problem is that, as I previously mentioned, it's only half of a story. The movie builds to something that never really occurs and the void in action will be even more obvious when the extreme action in the next film comes to fruition. Yes, I understand that the Lord of the Rings films do something similar. The difference is that those films manage to build towards their individual climax without actually failing to develop the overall story arc. I think Francis Lawrence tried to accomplish that with this film but the source material wasn't made for that to be done, where as the Lord of the Rings movies were. Mockingjay Part 1 is still a good film and ultimately will be incredibly important in setting the stage for what should be the best film of the franchise but it is still incomplete. Expand

The action scenes (while very few) were so cool to watch. But the ending is what really shocked me! Don't worry, I won't spoil anything just in case you haven't seen it. But the isn't without its flaws. Some people really dug the propaganda story element. Personally, it felt over-used and felt like a gimmick throughout the film. That was probably the biggest problem with the entire film, the propaganda stuff felt like it loss sight of the character of Katniss. I couldn't root for this character because she's basically being used to promote great propaganda messages when in reality she doesn't even want a war. It didn't even feel like a big war was going on. In the end, propaganda flooded this entire film, the first act of the film was slow and un-engaging, but eventually picks itself right back up about halfway through the film and delivered an awesome climax that took me by surprise. Overall, I'm going to give Mockingjay Part 1 a B! Expand

(Now it seems every movie has/will do that--Breaking Dawn, Deathly Hallows, Avengers: Infinity War, Allegiant, etc.) I read many reviews online, and they almost convinced me (without even watching the movie) that THG: Mockingjay--Part 1 was a pointless, boring cash-grab; a set-up movie filled with exposition and "filler"; a holdover for “THG Mockingjay--Part 2”. But if I have learned anything from watching so many recent films, it is this: don't judge a film by its posters, trailer, or reviews without seeing the movie for yourself--some films may really surprise you and are better (or worse) than you expected.

I think some of the characters didn’t get the screentime they deserved. But I truly only think that because you got to know the characters well in the books, and I think it’s kind of hard to replicate that in the movies without some kind of internal monologue. If Mockingjay was a standalone film not based on a book, I’d probably have a very difficult time relating to the characters. However, I know them all well enough to not be that disappointed by a character’s short screen time.

I can understand why some people who didn't read the books were disappointed with and failed to connect to Mockingjay--Part 1. But those who read the books should've been satisfied with the film. I think that because I read the books, I maybe could appreciate the movie better than some people (due to the fact that many of scenes in the movie might’ve seemed pointless, unnecessary, or boring to those who haven’t read the books). I personally wasn’t bored during the movie—because while nobody was fighting to the death, and there wasn’t much action—there was still good performances from the cast and some nice “political subtext”.

Because of the focus given on character-driven storylines and political allegories, I think that some viewers were distanced by the film’s approach. I personally think that instead of adapting the book as well as they did, they should’ve created some battle scenes (possibly focusing on missions from each side of the war between the districts and the capitol). Maybe they could’ve shown some battles that rebel and Capitol soldiers fought, with people such as Beetee, Haymitch, Boggs, President Snow, etc. overseeing it all. “Mockingjay Part 1 is less popular than its predecessors because it's a deliberate move away from action towards a more cerebral, darker kind of war movie.” Because the movie doesn’t rely on action scenes, and it’s still good (IMO), it's proof that THG films aren’t dumb YA novel adaptations. They can do well without deadly competitions in arenas and “silly teenage romance”.

The movie has a lot of things that probably turned off some people--no Hunger Games, no real action/fighting, less of an emphasis on the love-triangle romance, being split in two parts, etc. And being on top of “Fandango's list of most-anticipated films of 2014” probably contributed to this film’s lukewarm critical reception. When people had such enthusiasm and high expectations for the movie and they were disappointed, they probably got angry. So, besides a lack of action sequences and some characters getting little screentime, I actually thought that the movie wasn’t bad. This movie probably could’ve explored/developed certain aspects of the movie’s environment/atmosphere better than it did, but I think it’s still a bit better than the first HG film. It’s still not nearly as good as Catching Fire though. Mockingjay-Part 1 “did not do a good enough job showcasing the conflict between the characters. The third book was very somber and full of distrust. The movie…didn't really capture all that you read, where previous movies they did.” The second one can reach level of tension and excitement that this one never can.

Mockingjay-Part 2 will be released on November 20, 2015.

I have reviewed 33 other movies, including the 2014 films: Dracula Untold, The Maze Runner, The Expendables 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Giver, Sharknado 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Divergent, Transcendence, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more.

I review TV shows, such as: The Flash, Arrow (Season 3), Gotham, The Last Ship, Sleepy Hollow, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, The 100, I Wanna Marry Harry, Crisis, Gang Related, and more. I also have reviewed the mobile Android games: Minecraft Pocket Edition, Clash of Clans, and Five Night's at Freddy's.

A movie which went perfectly with the book. Now that is what makes a good adaptation. The direction was great - Lawrence (well, both of them) mesmerized again with his skills, everything went good.

But, the same concept of having two parts for Mockingjay has its cons, which will not be overlooked by many. Nobody sees the point in making two parts. A lot of the parts in Part I could have been skipped, and be merged with the finale.

At the same time, this characteristic is what earned Catching Fire the thumbs-up as well. The book was slow, no doubt. But, it is a book all the same. In that sense, yes, Mockingjay I is a job very well done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its really just okay to me. There's plenty of flaws because of how they stretch the hell out of it. Manly because of the idiotic splitting of the final chapter. There's scenes of them just walking around for like three minutes or of them just sitting there in silence for three minutes. I don't get it. The book is small enough for one movie. The movie is half down and the conclusion to this one felt that way. Just ends. This more about the story then the movie (fault is manly on Susan), it's about political gain for majority of the movie. Just trying to outwit the other ones with the better/more powerful message. Nonsense really. The action and CGI is pretty strong and the performance
s by the cast was the best out of the series, so that boasts it up a lot. The dramatic tension of who's dying or whats goes going to happen next was pretty powerful. The haunting details and showings of death, destruction, fear, etc.were powerful. Its just bogged down by a slow and boring plot, not enough fighting, half a movie, dumb plot about political power, etc. Overall I enjoyed it but nothing special and the worst of the series. 7.9/10

Overall, it was good. I know so people were complaining that movie had to be broken up in 2 parts but that's good because I don't want an overstuffed finale and it ends up terrible and disappointing like Spider-Man 3, X-Men:The Last Stand & The Matrix Revolutions. So I'm happy that they split it up because this movie got a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes and the HG1 got a 84% & HGCF got a 89% and the final movie can get like a 91% or something.

And understandably there was a large amount of material in the last book that unlike the previous two couldn't be confronted in one viewing but this movie doesn't address that meaningfully. Where this one should have focused on orienting us with district 13,the state of all the other districts after 12's bombing or Katniss new status it instead meanders around the aforementioned points, whilst contrastingly never explores them to the length they deserve and could be in a 1hr+ movie of a much anticipated series. They waste most of the movie on vapid scenes of the creation of the katniss revolutionary brand as well as her relationship with gale now peeta presence isn't an active obstacle. With that said it's still not a completely disappointing film and doesn't ruin the standard of the franchise. It's inoffensive when consumed in succession with it's concluding counterpart . And the cinematography and performances are still impressive nonetheless. Expand

I actually think the first two movies would have been more enjoyable as a whole if they were each split into two movies as well. I do perfectly understand why they did it like they did though.

Pros:
Main character is a strong woman
World building
The movies pacing is slower than the first two which I found more enjoyable

Cons:
Not that much actually happens in the movie.
Some scenes could have been explained better before they happen. There was a couple of times I had no idea what was going on until it was explained afterwards.
I'm personally not a fan of the leader of district 13. Her character seems somewhat generic and not that interesting.

Whilst unquestionably the weakest of the three films to date it still has much to commend it. Top of the list has to be the excellent Jennifer Lawrence for whom the word coasting doesn't seem to exist in her vocabulary. With this role she has created a female heroine the like of whom hasn't been seen since Sigourney Weaver delighted us in the 'Alien' films. The tone of this chapter is certainly darker (even without all the killing) and there is less action and more exposition, but somehow it all works. Julianne Moore is a welcome addition to the cast and effortlessly integrates herself into the film. The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman shamefully has little to do in this his last film appearance and Liam Hemsworth is limp and uninteresting as Lawrence's Conflicted love interest. Still, it's all very watchable even though more will be expected from next year's final act. Expand

I have to say I am very glad that a blockbuster with few action in it can be this successful and become the biggest box office hit of the year, so glad. This new chapter is definitely all about the propaganda war and the definitive birth of a revolution, which does not mean it lack very tense scenes. A great watch. I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Another great part of Hunger Games and great movie about dictatorship. Again there are some improvements to the predecessor:
First, the world of Panem, the dialogues and the story around dictatorship are perfectly made: Donald Sutherland as Snow is very impressive and convincing, the perfect villain. Also I noticed, that the main topic of the franchise is propaganda, my favourite theme.
The 2nd part of the movie is more action orientated and they had some flaws in the first and second Hunger Games. But in this movie they were tense, maybe because it was not so clear if the good guys will survive this and the bunker scenes were also nice. In addition I liked, that this movie was a bit different than the first two: no more games, but real war.
Another improvement: Jennifer Lawrence was finally convincing.
Oh..and I like the dark, threatening atmosphere.

There was one element that I dislike a lot: Julianne Moore. I cant watch her, she is simply too ugly to be shown, lol. And I didnt understand, why suddenly Katniss was so much in love with Peeta, although Gale fits better to her (see the first movie) and their ralationship was more a fake.

The first aspect I would like to mention is the rebellion. It’s so different from the previous installments, and I totally love it. The ”games” didn’t impress me as much as I would like to. So I really did enjoy this third Hunger Games movie. There’re even some metaphorical messages witch really gives the movie depth. The first act is okay, but not more. And the opening scene could have had a much greater contexture. I did expect a lot unique things that Catching Fire had, but there're not much of those. Many do criticize this movie because it doesn’t have much action, and I somewhat agree. The tempo is very slow, but I didn’t find it boring. On the contrary; I thought it was very entertaining. There are not much CGI and the movie overall felt very natural. But there are some events that are predictable, which is not good. The best thing with this movie is the second act, it’s very entertaining. But the third is a bit disappointing. The ending could have been much more exiting and eventful. I didn’t feel any excitement when the movie ended. Overall is this third Hunger Games movie great, even though the soundtrack could have been much more astounding and powerful. But the main cast are all very good and the movie did surpass my expectations.

The focus of this movie is on insurrection, survival and hope. There's a big difference between this and the previous movie. The strong sides are the dialogs, plot and strong development of existing characters. But the big weakness is the lack of action.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 gets a 7/10.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sick of Hollywood splitting the final film of a book-based franchise into two parts (seriously Hollywood, enough with that money-greedy bull****!!!) But overall, I honestly got slightly bored with this one about halfway through. And of course, just when I was getting ready for more, the film ended and left me hanging! Overall, good performances from the returning cast, as well as the fine addition of Julianne Moore and hopefully the second part will satisfy. Expand

Coin uses Everdeen as a weapon then Snow ( who is played very well by Donald Sutherland) uses her love Peta against the capital. the plot is definitely interesting and the suspense is pure gold! and i was on the edge of my seat. I definitely enjoyed this movie alot i can't wait part 2. Grade A- (the reason why i gave an A- is Natalie Dormer's character). Expand

It's 2 hours long which is a bit disappointing. There was enough material to make a 3 hour movie. I'm not sure why they didn't, unless money was a problem. You get impression as if everything was rushed through.

Rating, I'd say 7 would be the honest number.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since the first novel was released in 2008, The Hunger Games series has become one of the biggest YA franchises on the market, and it's been probably the only series to legitimately rival the Harry Potter franchise in sheer popularity. Although The Maze Runner and Divergent have enjoyed enough success to spawn their own film adaptations, neither have been nearly as lucrative as The Hunger Games. The franchise's complicated and timely hero as well as its biting political subtext has attracted many people to the series, and seven years, later the final film has been released to close the series. To get ready for it, I decided to watch the penultimate chapter, Mockingjay: Part 1. After destroying the arena at the 75th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss is brought to the underground District 13 in order to assume her identity as the Mockingjay, a symbol of hope and rebellion for the people of Panem. However, Katniss's hope begins to burn out when she realizes that Peeta was captured by the Capitol and is being brainwashed to convince the people to stop the rebellion. Even as a fan of the series, splitting the final book into two parts felt less like a narrative enhancement and more like an attempt to make more money. Some scenes seemed to drag on too long or be completely unnecessary. The book could easily be adapted into an epic three-hour conclusion and still be effective. There was also much less action than the previous films. However, the action scenes that were present are as poignant and exciting as ever. The series' strengths have always outweighed its issues, and Mockingjay: Part 1 is no exception. Jennifer Lawrence is still mesmerizing in her portrayal of Katniss, and the social commentary is just as timely and striking as it is in the other films. It may feel like too much exposition for the conclusion, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is a grim and exciting set-up for a hopefully action-packed finale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is a slow-paced, tension-building first half to a two-part finale of the Hunger Games franchise. Francis Lawrence shows us the world of Panem without the vicious games, bringing to light a different perspective in this dystopian society. Most new characters are underdeveloped with the focus on the demons that Katniss and Peeta deal with in the aftermath of Catching Fire. It is essentially the Katniss, Peeta and Gail show in a young adult molded film that is saved by its overpowering political subtext. It hopes that the intensity built pays off, although waiting a year to release Part 2 will make most of the tension dissipate.

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of use for the oscar-calibre cast. I mean you have Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland yet not much other than generic plot-moving dialogue from them. I understand that the film is based on a novel and that the filmmakers wanted to stay as true to them as possible, but with actors like that how can you not try to make these characters come to life off the page using their unique acting styles? I also found that the splitting of Mockingjay into two parts was unnecessary as the tension-building in this film only works if the events of Part 2 are seen in succession, not a year later. I would have preferred a three-hour movie instead of 2 two-hour films released a year apart.

Regardless it is a decent filibuster film due to its strong political commentary that makes most fans, die-hard and casual, wish that the final film was released at the beginning of 2015. Even if it burns, we burn with it because no matter what fans will see it for the highly anticipated climax of this great series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The symbol of the Mocking Jay strikes the heart of the audience once again, after seeing the ending of Catching Fire there were high expectations of how the story would unfold. The Mocking Jay Part 1 continued to be shocking, brave and an action packed film leaving the audience speechless. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 continues the story of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) the “girl on fire” who is now the face of the rebellion, carried away to the previously fallen District 13, after being rescued from the Hunger Games arena that Katniss had destroyed. Mocking Jay now continues the story of the main characters struggle to start the rebellion with District 13 to get their freedom back from the Capitol of Panem, while also remaining in a love triangle with Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (John Hutcherson) who was captured and punished by the Capitol. The third movie to the sequel continues the further understanding of the characters, and shows what they will do to save the ones they love. Mocking Jay is a great movie because of good writing by continuing the story of Katniss Everdeen’s journey, and by having great actors who truly portrayed their characters by physicality, body language, facial expression and voice changes. Also, the film is adapted well from the book by grabbing details and transferring that to the screen. Finally, Mocking Jay appeals to a large audience. As other film adapted sequels like Harry Potter or Twilight, when characters come from a printed page to a movie screen, fans of the sequels cringe in excitement. This results in sold out showtimes and a theatre where not a whisper or a blink of an eye are heard nor seen. After watching the other previous films of the Hunger Games, as I walked in the theatre and found my seat were just small steps, to fulfill a year full of excitement of re watching the trailers, and to be in this very moment of watching Mocking Jay Part 1. The thrill from reading the book was in affect, as I waited to see the courageous, brave and deeply emotional Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the hurt and lovable Peeta (John Hutcherson), quiet yet fearless Gale (Liam Hemsworth), drunk and helpful Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), the blood-dripping terrifying President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and all other characters that help or want to destroy Katniss throughout her journey as the face of the rebellion. As I longed for Katniss’ bravery and heart in the Mocking Jay, I was a little disappointed after being emotionally and psychologically crushed by the last Games she had entered, she begins Mocking Jay scared and sleepless because no one but Peeta (John Hutcherson) understands what she is going through. As she always reflects on the fact that her team in the arena did not stick to the plan of saving Peeta instead of her. As hurt as she is, after being put to see how the Capitol burned District 12 her hometown to the ground, killing thousands of her people and how President Snow (Donald Sutherland) had made it a crime to even speak to rebels. Katniss begins her journey as the face of the rebellion for District 13’s President Coin (Julianne Moore) to gather more rebels in the districts but, with consequences that she will only do it if District 13 saves Peeta and other tributes in the Capitol. As Jennifer Lawrence carries on the story of Katniss Everdeen, Lawrence continues to portray as the same Katniss that was in the first Hunger Games, the Katniss that had volunteered for her sister Prim in the games by giving the same facial expressions of bravery and commitment to helping her family as Lawrence did in the first Hunger Games, when first given the role of Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence was able to show her bravery but also show how deeply crushed she was by the games by having a weak voice that sounds as if she had been crying forever and her physicality was weak and unhealthy both were beneficial to understanding Katniss Everdeen’s role in the movie and how she truly had been crushed by the games. Lawrence stated in an interview “when you find Katniss Everdeen in Mocking Jay she is completely stripped down, she was already suffering from Post Dramatic Stress from the first and second movie. Now she has t completely rebuild herself...” (LionsgateFilmUK). Lawrence also use body language, facial expression and her voice to show how she was also mentally ill by having a tiresome face with a beaten body which hunched over, using a scratchy voice when caught sleeping after hours. In a cast interview, Jennifer Lawrence was asked how in the first films there was more action but in the last film is acting more with her eyes and facial expression and how the is different in Mocking Jay? Lawrence replied stating “ Lot less action in this movie, she is in a very different place emotionally, the games have completely changed her. So, she has to totally rebuild herself, not as much action more so of her reaction to everything” (Beyond the Trailer). Expand

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson really nailed their roles , julianne Moore , philip seymour hoffman , Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson also did their roles very well. My only complaint with the acting is from the rebels in D13! I didn't really felt like they are rebels. They only seemed to act like someone was forcing them to act. The direction was almost perfect! it's amazing how they took things like "the hanging tree" song from the book and made it into such powerful scene. I get why Francis decided to make Part 1 as a propaganda movie and part 2 as war movie! because if both the films had the same theme then splitting the book into 2 films would have been a stupid decision but 2 films should stand out on its own and Mockingjay part 1 do standout! but with a cliffhanger though. If you have read the book you know what is coming and how things which felt to some people as boring in part 1 will benefit once they see part 2. i didn't felt like the movie was boring at all like some people say! but yes , if you expected to see an adrenaline rush film like Hunger Games or Catching Fire! then you will be disappointed.Considering what is going to happen in Part 2! this film is very well done with justice to the book. conclusion :- brilliantly acted , smart political intrigue , great direction. For both people who have read the books or who have only seen the films I think they will be satisfied.

I was sceptical at first whilst going into the movie and yet I was intrigued to see how the narrative would play out on screen. I personally felt that the third book in the Hunger Games Trilogy “Mockingjay” was the most monotonous and disengaging out of the lot, so when I heard that Lionsgate was going to split the novel into two I like most people thought it was a heartless cash grab that would not pay off.

Mockingjay Part 1 is by no means better than the other two previous instalments of the series but it is not however a bad film contradictory of some of the other more naïve reviews. It serves (as I had hoped) as an engaging build up for the final chapter in the Hunger Games cinematic series. Although I still think that it was not right to split Mockingjay up, the first part has proved to be better than I thought and I walked out of the cinema feeling exited for the finale.

For people who have not read the books and have only watched the “Hunger Games” and “Catching Fire” I have to mention that the movie is a complete deviation from the practically identical structure of the other two films. Mockingjay Part 1 delves deeper as you might expect into the intricacies of building a revolution against the capitol. If you enjoyed the two movies purely for the spectacle of the arena and the survival element of the plot you will not like this movie but if you are invested in the acting talents of this series you are more likely to see this movie as an enjoyable cinematic experience.

For people who have read the book I will say that Mockingjay Part 1 is a pleasant surprise. I thought like the book the film would be dull and slow paced. The first two thirds of this film are worth your time even if the final part felt a little stretched. All of the Mockingjay book by Suzanne Collins was a disappointment for me but I think the plot has been rectified and showcased properly in this film. The film unlike the book expands on Collin’s world, in a subtle way and gives you more of an insight into the establishment of opposing propaganda clips which I found thoroughly entertaining and interesting (this was not depicted so much in the book).

I would have given this film a 5 instead of a 7 if it was not for the superb talents of Jennifer Lawrence & the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Their performances arguably carry the story and do not falter throughout the duration of the movie. Hoffman’s intellectual and shockingly comedic portrayal of Plutarch Heavensbee is yet another reminder of what a great character actor who we have lost and who will miss in the foreseeable future.

This movie includes a solid soundtrack and outstandingly realistic special effects. If you have enjoyed the acting and the characters you will like this movie. If you didn't like Mockingjay the book try out this feature because it may as I found surpass your expectations. This movie has at the very least made me want to rush to see the final film which I suppose was its primary function as a studio cash grab.

Even now I think that this time next year when the final movie of the Hunger Games has come and gone I may even be a little upset when I come to realize that it is all over.

As a result, these things are done absolutley beautifully, with heartfelt moments and some serious themes explored in so many thought out and well directed ways. This also means it's all very well set up for part 2, plus it's very well shot and doesn't feel too stretched out for a 'part 1 film.'
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It only focuses on two things, so is a touch boring in terms of any plot. Also, tension builds constantly with no real climax, partly due to the lack of action or exciting and defiant scenes (which is supposedly so that we go and see part 2.) One little gripe too is that the soundtrack is a bit weird in places - though music and chants are used powerfully throughout
VERDICT: This sets up part 2 beautifully, but as a film on it's own it struggles to grab excitement from audiences. Having said that, what's there is done brilliantly, it just feels like there could be more.

I didn't read them, I have no particular intention of doing so for any particular reason, so I will ignore the books and focus on the film.

In this film, we follow Katniss' first steps as a revolutionary. After being rescued from the arena and recovering from her injuries, she discovers that she is with a group of rebels, the same ones who allegedly lost the civil war seventy-five years earlier, the same ones who inhabit the supposedly extinct District 13. After all, everything was a lie. Everything was a manoeuvrer by Snow's regime to hide the existence of a strong movement of political contestation. Alma Coin, the head of the Resistance, asks for Katniss's support, wants her to become a symbol, a mascot. But she only thinks about the fate of her friends, especially Peeta, who is in Snow's power and seems to have been brainwashed.

Well, after the second film turned out to be excellent it was difficult to do better, but it was totally possible to match it. I don't think that happened, although it is very close. This continues to be an excellent film and to be within a standard that does not clash or belittle the other two. I just don't seem to have managed to be that good. To begin with, I hate when a film based on a book splits into two halves, it is almost always a sign that there is immense straw that could be perfectly removed in an editing room by a skilled editor. The film, in fact, drags a little more than those that preceded it, but if the audience gets involved in the story it ends up not even noticing much. It is also a film that has a lot of sci-fi, the most focused on that genre in all of tetralogy.

Jennifer Lawrence has remained excellent, but it brings nothing that we have not seen. In addition, attempts to create a romantic plot around her character are weak and cold, whatever the target of Katniss's interest. Donald Sutherland continues to surprise and now gives us an almost perfect villain, in his megalomania, narcissism and thirst for control and power. He is truly an exceptional actor, at his best. Stanley Tucci was much more serious and restrained in the way he brought Cesar, a sensationalist TV host, to life, but it reveals how his character is just a puppet of the regime. Elizabeth Banks is an actress who reveals herself in this film, thanks to the profound mental and psychological transformation that her character will undergo here, and Woody Harrelson gains strength and seriousness, as she becomes one of the most fervent supporters of "Mockingjay". Julianne Moore alternates between contained sweetness and charismatic strength and presence; Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright and Jena Malone are very good, but they don't do much more than they ask. Josh Hutcherson continues to sound weird, although in this film this is almost required by the character.

In addition to a great cast and a good story, the film has excellent production values: careful cinematography with good contrast, excellent sets and costumes and great CGI and sound effects that make fights and combats seem like they want to get off the screen . The soundtrack also deserves special mention for its effectiveness and beauty. Composed by James Newton Howard, it is one of those that remains in the ear long after we have seen the film.

Full of action and with an excellent story, this film is excellent, although it is not as engaging and intense as the film that preceded it. It drags on more, some scenes seem to be expendable, but that's what happens when, for money, a book unfolds in two films.

Kolejna dawka tego samego w tej serii. W sumie bardzo fajne przedstawienie rewolucji od strony wojny propagandowej oraz wywiadowczej. Reszta aspektów niezmienna

Takes the last two and puts a spin on it that works great. The spin allows it to add more depth to the themes.
