Although this feels more like an extended trailer than a full movie, Mockingjay Part 1 definitely manages to be both entertaining and emotional while staying true to the source material.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is nothing like its 2 predecessors - it is boring and bland. Some of the problems:

- Above all, nothing exciting happens in the film - its basically 2 hours of Katniss crying at television screens, being difficult with people, and boring ass speeches
- Katniss goes from a badass female hero of the first two films to a mopey, annoying, irrational, and emotionally-unstable person
- Tons of cheesy speeches / dialogue that hold zero meaning for the viewer
- It appears like there's a total of a few thousand people living in the districts and the capitol - very non-believable
- Lots of stupid things happening, like lumberjacks climbing trees while being shot at, and people rushing into gunfire and somehow surviving in large numbers

It wasn't horrible but very slow paced compared to previous ones. You'll walk away wondering when the next release will be offered. They could have made Mockingjay into one film instead of 2 and it would have been better. Can anyone say $$$

It's 2 hours long which is a bit disappointing. There was enough material to make a 3 hour movie. I'm not sure why they didn't, unless money was a problem. You get impression as if everything was rushed through.

Rating, I'd say 7 would be the honest number.

With a cast that delivers superb performances and a story that offers some beautiful scenarios, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" is nowhere near a bad movie, but it lacks the action and the emotion that made the previous movies so compelling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hunger Games film franchise has been one of the most popular in recent memory. From the first film on, the film's premise has centered around murder and class warfare, but at the center of that bleakness was a beacon of hope, Katniss Everdeen, however, in Mockingjay Part 1, that hope takes a turn for the worse. Centered around the aftermath of the events of Catching Fire, we find our heroine at her darkest point, surrounded by a colony of freedom fighters and lost without the man whom she has grown to care for, Peeta. There's a shadow looming over Katniss and a growing weigh upon her shoulders. The penultimate film in this franchise has moved on from the games and into the war.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself in an underground bunker within District 13. Following the escape from the quarter quell, the tributes have either been captured by the Capitol or were rescued by Plutarch's (Philip Seymour Hoffman) rebel squadron. Katniss is suffering from PTSD and remains under the care of the district's medical staff. Fellow survivor Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) is suffering from the same despair and is resigned to survivors remorse, mourning for the loss of his beloved Annie and the others who were captured by the Capital. Katniss is taken to see President Coin (Julianne Moore), the president of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion who requires Katniss' help to win the war over President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss reluctantly agrees, but on the condition that Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and the other tributes would be rescued. Just one problem, it appears Peeta has been recruited and is now a spokesperson for the Capital and is speaking out against the revolution.
Katniss, believing that Peeta is being brainwashed into saying these outlandish remarks, decides that she will not rest until she can rescue her friend. Through a series of vignettes, the rebellion broadcasts images of Katniss in battle defeating the Capitol guards and hoping to convince those unwilling to fight to take up arms and join Katniss and District 13's side. With the help of Gale (Liam Hemsworth), her former beau, Katniss travels from district to district to assess the damages done by the Capitol and reaffirming her decision to take up arms against her oppressors. Peeta, through a series of intimate interviews with Capitol spokesperson Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), pleads for the resistance to lay down their arms and work to strive peace with the Capitol. The two former companions who had protected each other in the games are now sparring in a war of words with the fate of the world at each others finger tips.
Each side makes their move to gain a powerful foothold in their vicious war. As the rebellion gains support, President Coin elects to send in a rescue mission to bring back to captive tributes, including Peeta, and remove the Capital's most powerful propaganda weapon. With time running out, will the resistance succeed in rescuing the tributes and turning the tide of the war or will they fall prey to the plans of President Snow and tip the scales in the favor the Capital?
Deciding to stick closely to the plot of the novel by Suzanne Collins, director Francis Lawrence delivers a politically charged dystopian drama that is not for the faint of heart. Like many war films, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is unwavering in its relentless depiction of the brutality of war. That being said, the film may be too bleak for many of the films core fans. Fans of the book series on the other hand are sure to be prepared for the events that transpire.
The acting in the movie has a lot to be desired. Whether it be the screenplay from Peter Craig and Danny Strong or the actors themselves, there's something missing in the delivery of much of the films dialogue. Jennifer Lawrence is the staple that keeps this film together but much of the film is spent retreading on the awkward love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta. The chemistry between Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence is as flat as it was in the previous films. Josh Hutcherson, in limited screen time, makes the most of it and turns in a great performance. The transformation of his character from the previous films til now is one of the bright spots of Mockingjay Part 1. Two disappointments for me were the use of Julianne Moore and the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Each provide lifeless depictions of their characters and the lack of emotions in the delivery of important dialogue is truly disappointing.
Overall, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is excruciatingly slow and opts for more drama than action this time around. Film goers may be disappointed at the pacing of this one. Truth be told, this final book did not need to be split into two separate movies; one would've been just fine. Lionsgate missed the mark with this decision. Let's hope word of mouth doesn't hurt too much because this franchise deserves a better fate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" is far away the worst movie of the series when the focus is stir emotions. Obviously, so many people cried in the parts of Josh suffering ('cause, lord, his fans are like, crazy as any others), and so many people cried when he was back to Jennifer (but remembering: also thinking that she was the enemy), and in the parts of the districts (OK, I admit, I cried when Katniss sang The Hanging Tree too). But most of the people who has cried read the books as well. Was not that emotional to my parents (who just listened to me talking about the books over and over again), or to my friends (that think that the only thing important in the movie is Josh parts). Is not a bad movie considering the direction and the script. But comparing that movie to the other two, it's not the best. Expand

If you thought the actual "games" part of the first 2 movies were cheesy (like I did) you might like this one better. This movie is about the bigger picture and is grittier, tension filled, has lots of strategy involved, addresses how a full-fledged revolution is born and works on a much higher level IMHO. I thought this was the best of the 3. (Did I miss Effie's outrageous outfits? Of course, but seeing a stripped down Effie who has defected and seeing how she copes living in an underground bunker without her wigs and costumes was actually more satisfying.) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The symbol of the Mocking Jay strikes the heart of the audience once again, after seeing the ending of Catching Fire there were high expectations of how the story would unfold. The Mocking Jay Part 1 continued to be shocking, brave and an action packed film leaving the audience speechless. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 continues the story of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) the “girl on fire” who is now the face of the rebellion, carried away to the previously fallen District 13, after being rescued from the Hunger Games arena that Katniss had destroyed. Mocking Jay now continues the story of the main characters struggle to start the rebellion with District 13 to get their freedom back from the Capitol of Panem, while also remaining in a love triangle with Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (John Hutcherson) who was captured and punished by the Capitol. The third movie to the sequel continues the further understanding of the characters, and shows what they will do to save the ones they love. Mocking Jay is a great movie because of good writing by continuing the story of Katniss Everdeen’s journey, and by having great actors who truly portrayed their characters by physicality, body language, facial expression and voice changes. Also, the film is adapted well from the book by grabbing details and transferring that to the screen. Finally, Mocking Jay appeals to a large audience. As other film adapted sequels like Harry Potter or Twilight, when characters come from a printed page to a movie screen, fans of the sequels cringe in excitement. This results in sold out showtimes and a theatre where not a whisper or a blink of an eye are heard nor seen. After watching the other previous films of the Hunger Games, as I walked in the theatre and found my seat were just small steps, to fulfill a year full of excitement of re watching the trailers, and to be in this very moment of watching Mocking Jay Part 1. The thrill from reading the book was in affect, as I waited to see the courageous, brave and deeply emotional Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the hurt and lovable Peeta (John Hutcherson), quiet yet fearless Gale (Liam Hemsworth), drunk and helpful Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), the blood-dripping terrifying President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and all other characters that help or want to destroy Katniss throughout her journey as the face of the rebellion. As I longed for Katniss’ bravery and heart in the Mocking Jay, I was a little disappointed after being emotionally and psychologically crushed by the last Games she had entered, she begins Mocking Jay scared and sleepless because no one but Peeta (John Hutcherson) understands what she is going through. As she always reflects on the fact that her team in the arena did not stick to the plan of saving Peeta instead of her. As hurt as she is, after being put to see how the Capitol burned District 12 her hometown to the ground, killing thousands of her people and how President Snow (Donald Sutherland) had made it a crime to even speak to rebels. Katniss begins her journey as the face of the rebellion for District 13’s President Coin (Julianne Moore) to gather more rebels in the districts but, with consequences that she will only do it if District 13 saves Peeta and other tributes in the Capitol. As Jennifer Lawrence carries on the story of Katniss Everdeen, Lawrence continues to portray as the same Katniss that was in the first Hunger Games, the Katniss that had volunteered for her sister Prim in the games by giving the same facial expressions of bravery and commitment to helping her family as Lawrence did in the first Hunger Games, when first given the role of Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence was able to show her bravery but also show how deeply crushed she was by the games by having a weak voice that sounds as if she had been crying forever and her physicality was weak and unhealthy both were beneficial to understanding Katniss Everdeen’s role in the movie and how she truly had been crushed by the games. Lawrence stated in an interview “when you find Katniss Everdeen in Mocking Jay she is completely stripped down, she was already suffering from Post Dramatic Stress from the first and second movie. Now she has t completely rebuild herself...” (LionsgateFilmUK). Lawrence also use body language, facial expression and her voice to show how she was also mentally ill by having a tiresome face with a beaten body which hunched over, using a scratchy voice when caught sleeping after hours. In a cast interview, Jennifer Lawrence was asked how in the first films there was more action but in the last film is acting more with her eyes and facial expression and how the is different in Mocking Jay? Lawrence replied stating “ Lot less action in this movie, she is in a very different place emotionally, the games have completely changed her. So, she has to totally rebuild herself, not as much action more so of her reaction to everything” (Beyond the Trailer). Expand

The storyline is vanilla and boring which can be summarised as a protagonist striving to free a world from tyranny, the way in which this is done however is outside the box and creative but I question its execution.

With Jennifer Lawrence at the helm, she does a poor job in evoking a passionate narrative and leaves you feeling like she’s simply trying too much which is annoying and irritating to watch.

The film stagnates and over saturates the viewer with the same monotone imagery repeating the same message, the constant sit downs with supporting actors comforting each other or offering pep talks gets old after the first several times, this is basically the film, with little else to add contrast to mix things up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say that I am no fan of the series, the other two films entertained me but not impassioned me. I believe that history is for young-adult (I am, but I like the deep arguments and in my opinion this is not it). When I went to see Mockingjay Part 1 with my friends I thought, "Well, at least the action scenes make me have a good time because I do not really like history" shortly after would prove that I was wrong and now I will tell you why. To begin the concept of rebellion is widely used, but this is not the main problem, I always thought that if a concept widely used you add something new is good, but in this film do not add any interesting concept remains the same as always, two sides, shooting, hostage rescues ... When I first heard within the film the Mockingjay what I thought would finally demonstrate what can be drawn from such an argument, but it turned out just to be a instrument for advertising of one side. The scenes are unnecessarily lengthened so you end up getting bored in the action scenes the camera moves too much, and loving undertone is typical of two boys with different ideas and a girl who can not decide, well, very basic all . I do not recommend this movie people who have not seen the others, people who do not like (or simply are not interested) the saga. But if you like the series I encourage you to see it and waste your time on that boring two-hour movie that lives of the fame that the other movies won. Gentlemen, I think it's better to read the books than see this on the big screen. Expand

Disappointing. They should have had a long movie (only one) to finish the series.
I read the book again after the second movie (wanted to find out everything about the ending!) and I must say, it was a quick read. Didn't even pay attention to the fact it was separated in 2 parts in the book, who knew?
Anyway, this movie felt drawn out - probably because it was. There just wasn't enough material in the book to cover a 2 hour movie. The one saving grace was Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) - what little scene he had, was great, gritty, and raw (won't spoil it for you!)
In summary, skip the theater and wait for rental (preferably just before the last movie comes out). This was a cash grab by the studio, producers, and everyone involved. I would honestly skip the theater if I could go back in time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was not a bad movie, all the hate that its getting is not really basing it on anything other than some childish hatred for things that are popular. That said, though i did not think this was a bad movie, it left me feeling like the whole thing was a little un necessary. Here's why.

It felt like filler, now i saw the deathly hallows part one which was basically camping simulator with magic, and this movie felt like propaganda simulator with explosions. The start of the movie was to say the least less than stellar, it had no OUMMPH it was boring and i felt like i was watching a bad episode of ER.

Katniss FIRES ONE ARROW THE ENTIRE GOD DAMN MOVIE! Holy **** sorry i had to get that off my chest. Very few action scenes, with one bloody excellent Tom Clancy like infiltration scene that was, to be honest, pretty damn cool. Those red lights had me .

The people of Panau or whatever the planet is called seem to be mindless sheep, following the words of some girl theve never met, not thinking for themselves, throwing themselves in front of bullets and bombing the **** out of damns all because they saw something on TV? It seems like the entire world hinges on the words of Katniss and a few other mildly interesting side characters who dont do much but stand in the backround and eyebrow act.

Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress, dont get me wrong, and there were actually a few scenes where i felt goosebumps when she was recording her propoganda speech, but it felt hollow. Nothing really happened to make this seem worthwhile.

Also Kaitniss bombed a hospital. I dont know if any one else noticed this but when Kaitniss shot down the bomber, she caused it to crash into the hospital quencing any hope of finding survivors.

Overall i was dissapointed, it needed more action and less talking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't bother seeing this one in the theater. People walked out, I was seriously thinking about it. Nothing interesting happens. The cheap out on the viewer by skimping on the special effects in a lot of places. You get to watch some 1980's vector graphic triangle representation of a big scary bomber coming in to blow everyone up but you never get to see it, or anything actually go boom. Just a lot of dust falling from the ceiling of the bunker they all hide in. The rescue scene near the end was less than suspenseful. Gas everyone, go in, radio goes out. Wait a while. Everyone comes back. No shots fired, nothing interesting happens. The rest of the "action" scenes really made no sense. The thing with climbing trees to get away from guys with machine guns was just plain dumb. The unarmed people rushing the dam was a dumb and suicidal way to take it out. Looked like a poor-man's World War Z scene.

Just wait, rent it before the second half comes out and watch it with Fast Forward being your friend.

People coming out of Dumb and Dumber were all smiles, people coming out of this stinker were all frowns and disappointment.

This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever sat through. The time just dragged on and on (I caught myself looking at my watch). It is the first time I ever felt like walking out in the middle of a movie. The amount of actual plot advancement of the Hunger Games story could have been contained in about 15 to 20 minutes, but we were forced to endure over 2 hours of ridiculous speeches, innumerable scenes of wrecked buildings and even silly cat tricks. A total bore! I would not recommend this waste of time to anyone. Hopefully the finale next year will as spectacular as the first 2 films. Expand

I personally was very put off by the idea that Mockingjay would be split into 2 parts. (Now it seems every movie has/will do that--Breaking Dawn, Deathly Hallows, Avengers: Infinity War, Allegiant, etc.) I read many reviews online, and theyI personally was very put off by the idea that Mockingjay would be split into 2 parts. (Now it seems every movie has/will do that--Breaking Dawn, Deathly Hallows, Avengers: Infinity War, Allegiant, etc.) I read many reviews online, and they almost convinced me (without even watching the movie) that THG: Mockingjay--Part 1 was a pointless, boring cash-grab; a set-up movie filled with exposition and "filler"; a holdover for “THG Mockingjay--Part 2”. But if I have learned anything from watching so many recent films, it is this: don't judge a film by its posters, trailer, or reviews without seeing the movie for yourself--some films may really surprise you and are better (or worse) than you expected.

I think some of the characters didn’t get the screentime they deserved. But I truly only think that because you got to know the characters well in the books, and I think it’s kind of hard to replicate that in the movies without some kind of internal monologue. If Mockingjay was a standalone film not based on a book, I’d probably have a very difficult time relating to the characters. However, I know them all well enough to not be that disappointed by a character’s short screen time.

I can understand why some people who didn't read the books were disappointed with and failed to connect to Mockingjay--Part 1. But those who read the books should've been satisfied with the film. I think that because I read the books, I maybe could appreciate the movie better than some people (due to the fact that many of scenes in the movie might’ve seemed pointless, unnecessary, or boring to those who haven’t read the books). I personally wasn’t bored during the movie—because while nobody was fighting to the death, and there wasn’t much action—there was still good performances from the cast and some nice “political subtext”.

Because of the focus given on character-driven storylines and political allegories, I think that some viewers were distanced by the film’s approach. I personally think that instead of adapting the book as well as they did, they should’ve created some battle scenes (possibly focusing on missions from each side of the war between the districts and the capitol). Maybe they could’ve shown some battles that rebel and Capitol soldiers fought, with people such as Beetee, Haymitch, Boggs, President Snow, etc. overseeing it all. “Mockingjay Part 1 is less popular than its predecessors because it's a deliberate move away from action towards a more cerebral, darker kind of war movie.” Because the movie doesn’t rely on action scenes, and it’s still good (IMO), it's proof that THG films aren’t dumb YA novel adaptations. They can do well without deadly competitions in arenas and “silly teenage romance”.

The movie has a lot of things that probably turned off some people--no Hunger Games, no real action/fighting, less of an emphasis on the love-triangle romance, being split in two parts, etc. And being on top of “Fandango's list of most-anticipated films of 2014” probably contributed to this film’s lukewarm critical reception. When people had such enthusiasm and high expectations for the movie and they were disappointed, they probably got angry. So, besides a lack of action sequences and some characters getting little screentime, I actually thought that the movie wasn’t bad. This movie probably could’ve explored/developed certain aspects of the movie’s environment/atmosphere better than it did, but I think it’s still a bit better than the first HG film. It’s still not nearly as good as Catching Fire though. Mockingjay-Part 1 “did not do a good enough job showcasing the conflict between the characters. The third book was very somber and full of distrust. The movie…didn't really capture all that you read, where previous movies they did.” The second one can reach level of tension and excitement that this one never can.

Mockingjay-Part 2 will be released on November 20, 2015.

I have reviewed 33 other movies, including the 2014 films: Dracula Untold, The Maze Runner, The Expendables 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Giver, Sharknado 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Divergent, Transcendence, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more.

I review TV shows, such as: The Flash, Arrow (Season 3), Gotham, The Last Ship, Sleepy Hollow, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, The 100, I Wanna Marry Harry, Crisis, Gang Related, and more. I also have reviewed the mobile Android games: Minecraft Pocket Edition, Clash of Clans, and Five Night's at Freddy's.

Basically everyone hides down a hole while the facility gets bombed. Yawn. Moderately interesting political sub-plot though, and reasonable performances from Moore and Lawrence. Hoffman's performance mostly consists of eye rolling and implied tension about something or other - presumably this will be revealed in the next movie. Darkly filmed (ie mostly down a hole) and variably directed. For those who haven't, the feeling must be that splitting the book into two movies was a way to make more money. The truth in my opinion is less sinister. The third book of the series is actually not as good as the first couple. So the movie was going to be less than great no matter what. Splitting the book in two, made it less than that. In summary, I think the producers did a decent job. But it's by no means a great film. Expand

A movie which went perfectly with the book. Now that is what makes a good adaptation. The direction was great - Lawrence (well, both of them) mesmerized again with his skills, everything went good.

But, the same concept of having two parts for Mockingjay has its cons, which will not be overlooked by many. Nobody sees the point in making two parts. A lot of the parts in Part I could have been skipped, and be merged with the finale.

At the same time, this characteristic is what earned Catching Fire the thumbs-up as well. The book was slow, no doubt. But, it is a book all the same. In that sense, yes, Mockingjay I is a job very well done.

However I can say that they made great use of the extra time and created a movie any Hunger Games fan can enjoy. It touches on some deep themes (for instance use of propaganda) and gives us some great character interactions all while building up for the end.

It's not as action-packed as the previous movies. Something that will disappoint those who are looking for reasons to hate on the series. However instead it chooses to focus on more emotional character moments and dark scenarios that show the horror the rebellion is inflicting on the common people as well as our main heroes.

It ends on a note that has me dying to see the next, final movie. Hunger Games fans are in for a treat. It certainly does give ammunition to those who dislike the series, but by focusing on these negative aspects and choosing to ignore the positive ones they are missing out. I've never read any of the books so I can say that the movie stands well on it's own. You don't need to have a love for the book to enjoy this movie.

If you've enjoyed the previous movies I highly doubt you'll dislike this one. Those who haven't enjoyed the series, why are you even here? It's another excellent Hunger Games movie. One that I give a 9.1/10.

My only beef is that they did not do a good enough job showcasing the conflict between the characters. The third book was very sombre and full of distrust. The movie, though dark at points, didn't really capture all that you read, where previous movies they did.

For people complaining that it was a cash-grab or not really capturing the sense of the story, they are just complaining that the movie is split in two. They are right in the sense of it being a cash grab, but I am at least glad they made the movie well unlike the Harry Potter series which butchered the final two movies and final story.

I would give the movie a 4/10, compared to the first two movies Mockingjay Part I was a disappointment. I was impressed by the acting done by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and most of the acting done by Jennifer Lawrence was great, but it didn’t match her performance in the first two films. Hopefully part two will make up for part one.
To catch you up, after Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) was taken up into the aircraft at the end of Catching Fire you learn that there is a plan to spark a rebellion in Panem. Rebel President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) plan to use Katniss as the vehicle to fuel the rebellion. As you learn in Catching Fire, Peeta (Josh Hucherson) has been taken by the Capitol to threaten those who go against them and torture Katniss.
The first 45 minutes of the movie are boring and depressing to say the least. I felt like the whole movie was basically the Rebels’ creating propaganda videos to try and rally the troops, and Katniss going through various states of emotion. One second she would be sad the next scared and the next happy. The thing that bothered me the most about the movie was how long it took to reach the climax. You don’t have any feeling of suspense or anticipation until the last fifteen minutes of the movie. The creators also expect us to care about characters like Katniss’ family and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) when they only get like ten minutes on the screen. Also, I believe the whole part one and part two setup they decided to do to the film is a desperate cash grab to try and get people to come spend money to see the ending next year.
One thing I thought the movie did a good job of is creating the dystopian/revolution mood. It felt like the whole movie was in dark lighting which set a gloomy atmosphere. Also the settings of many of the scenes took place in areas destroyed or in shambles, giving it the dystopian mood. One more thing I thought was done well was the placement of action scenes spread around the movie, they were all well placed throughout the movie.
To conclude, there were things done well such as the settings and mood as well as the acting done by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and most of the acting done by Jennifer Lawrence. Despite the few good things, the movie was still bad. The lack of climatic events during most of the movie, the vapidity, and lack of character development made this movie bad. So in my opinion if you’re planning to go see it, save your money, and wait until it’s on Netflix.

Whilst it zips through much of the slightly tedious entry plot-line to the book, it does a great job of setting up the gist of the story, while focussing on the goose-bump moments. When Katniss sings the Hanging Tree, and when she visits the hospital in a warring district, she almost out does her earlier performances, however, the one area where there should have been seriously fantastic acting, but was lacking was when she delivrs her you burn with us line. Yet despite these drawbacks, the film is still an incredible attempt at a split film (especially when compared to something like the first Harry Potter finale film - boring and made up of 9/10 of the book's plot, whilst the second was almost half made up of the final battle, so protracted, it could have been real-time). Therefore, all in all I have given it a 10, yet not quite so good as Catching Fire, which was the best in the film series (in my opinion). Expand

Everything about the movie was done really well. The special effects and action sequences were top notch and the continually increased budget is evident here especially. The acting was fantastic and the setting was detailed and felt incredibly real. Even all of the little emotional elements delivered perfectly. The real problem is that, as I previously mentioned, it's only half of a story. The movie builds to something that never really occurs and the void in action will be even more obvious when the extreme action in the next film comes to fruition. Yes, I understand that the Lord of the Rings films do something similar. The difference is that those films manage to build towards their individual climax without actually failing to develop the overall story arc. I think Francis Lawrence tried to accomplish that with this film but the source material wasn't made for that to be done, where as the Lord of the Rings movies were. Mockingjay Part 1 is still a good film and ultimately will be incredibly important in setting the stage for what should be the best film of the franchise but it is still incomplete. Expand

Actually it is where I belong, unfortunately, Moore is the new addition in the cast, as President Coin, leadership usually is not in her wheelhouse, remember CHILDREN OF MEN (2006, 9/10)? Plus my perfectionist side urges me to continue since I have watched the first two THE HUNGER GAMES (2012, 7/10) and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (2013, 6/10), for better or worse, I will definitely watch the final chapter next year to wrap it up, sorry to fall into the machination of capitalistic greed. However, I will keep a clear mind to next year’s INSURGENT (2015) and MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS (2015).

Don't expect anything great from this film except for special effects unless of course you're a twelve year old boy or girl.

The main problem I had with the movies and the books is that, if you are actually mature, you will have no emotional attachment to any of the people in the series. This is purely because they have no personality and are completely two dimensional as you would expect from a movie where the target audience is only there for explosions or Liam Hemsworth. However, I don't believe this excuses not trying to improve on Susanne Collin's simplistic writing style for the sake of making a piece of art, which they could do with their massive budget, as well as pander to their original audience.

One of the worst aspects of the movie had to be the acting. I am sincerely disappointed with Jennifer Lawrence's performance, since she is supposed to be capable of delivering Oscar winning pieces of acting yet in this she was just plain standard. She seemed like she was just trying to look like she cared and not that she really did. A key point of acting is that you have to become your character and feel what they are feeling, if not then you must be extremely good at lying: in this film Jennifer Lawrence seemed to be stuck somewhere in the middle in an unconvincing and cringe worthy performance. Most of the acting was like this with the exception of Philip Seymour Hoffman who was brilliant and Katnisse's sister who was terrible. (average for a child actor though)

Some scenes of the film did however hold the film up with fantastic special effects and directing that made you come back from the boring scenes of Katniss crying or characters you didn't care about talking. However when they did show these scenes it did just make me feel frustrated that they would spend so much money on CGI and sets that they couldn't spend some more money on writers or half decent actors.

I seriously believe that there does need to be a change in the Cinema industry and that is acting over attractiveness. Instead of hiring guys with washboard abs to play main characters, why not hire people who can actually act? The same goes for female roles as well, the actress who played Prim was utterly wooden but had a pretty face so she got the part. What the hell is going on?

Jennifer Lawrence delivers an emotionally intense, but believable Katniss Everdeen. The Characters portrayed were intelligent and believable. At no point did they make choices that would seem illogical or out of place, simply to drive the plot forward... (with one small exception) like in so many movies these days.

The movie was genuinely inspiring, and generally unpredictable. Leaving the audience squirming in their seats as they try to anticipate the coming scenes. Certainly I am glad to have never read the books, because knowing how things would have played out would have ruined so much of the suspense and intensity. At no point was I bored, choosing to hold my bladder for the final half our, so as not to miss a moment.

EXTREME SPOILERS AHEAD, only for those that have already seen the movie:

My only small gripe, the only thing that makes this movie not completely perfect, (and this is certainly a subjective opinion) is President snow's choice to allow the rescue-team to recover the tributes from the capitol. Sure, one of them had a small chance to kill Katnis, sure she would feel emotional trauma at the pain inflicted on Peta, but I imagine it would have been a lot more effective to execute them, than to give them such a moral boosting victory and allowing them to save more important figure-heads of the rebellion. This decision did not seem as smart, nor as sociopathic as I imagine President Snow to be. I can live with writing this off as President snow being rather demented and therefor somewhat unpredictable, but not without a little reservation.

I know this is not the first movie to do this, (and most defiantly not the last) but all the other movies to do this were at least entertaining, like Harry potter, and the hobbit (I've haven't seen any of the twilight movies and as far as I'm concerned they don't exist) but this!? I am shocked to say I loved this movie. In fact I liked it nearly as much as Catching Fire and that movie was great! We have a very well done and very solid build up to what will be an enthralling finale to the Hunger Games saga.

Disbelief that a great franchise like this would have such a lackluster installment. The only scene that had some suspense is when the small team infiltrated the hunger games tower (which was way towards the end might I add). But hey they made their goal. The probably raked in almost a billion dollars due to this movie and will continue to have loyal fans. I just pray that this franchise gets the wonderful send off this deserves. It's not bad, it just feels too much like filler and a set up for the final film, which I have no doubt will be far more entertaining. Kind of a shame though considering how good the second one was.

Whilst the minority would argueMockingjay: Part 1 is the first instalment of the split in two series finale. The majority would argue that splitting the final instalment of the series into two parts is an unnecessary money spinning gimmick. Whilst the minority would argue that it allows the story to breath. Regardless of whether it's for financial gain or not on the studios part, ultimately as a viewer I want to be entertained and in terms of content I want value for money with any film. But as a standalone film I'm not entirely sure if Mockingjay: Part 1 justifies itself. Considering it's lengthy running time, this so called split down the middle Part 1 doesn't seem to cover much content. But then again this penultimate instalment of the series is telling a very different story to it's predecessors. And although this film does feature integral information, as a viewing experience it does sacrifice action and thrills for politics and character development. Jennifer Lawrence is strong again in the leading role. I wouldn't go as far as saying this is her weakest performance in the role to date, but she doesn't seem to have as much to do this time round. The supporting cast benefits from the lack of set pieces though and the screen time is well balanced between all of returning and new characters. Most notably Liam Hemsworth who has much more involvement and Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright's input is more integral. Of the new cast members Julianne Moore and Natalie Dormer in particular are welcome additions. For all the characters we don't see so much of, their screen time will certainly be made up in Part 2. Once again Francis Lawrence's overall direction is impressive and even though the set pieces are limited, for what there is of them they are all enjoyable. Personally what Part 1 archives most though is a greater sense of scale and exploration into the wider country of Panem. Overall I was entertained, interested and there's no doubt that this platform sets up what should be a superior second instalment and an incredible series finale. But as a standalone film this isn't as re-watchable as it's predecessor and it's my least favourite of the series to date. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is a slow-paced, tension-building first half to a two-part finale of the Hunger Games franchise. Francis Lawrence shows us the world of Panem without the vicious games, bringing to light a different perspective in this dystopian society. Most new characters are underdeveloped with the focus on the demons that Katniss and Peeta deal with in the aftermath of Catching Fire. It is essentially the Katniss, Peeta and Gail show in a young adult molded film that is saved by its overpowering political subtext. It hopes that the intensity built pays off, although waiting a year to release Part 2 will make most of the tension dissipate.

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of use for the oscar-calibre cast. I mean you have Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland yet not much other than generic plot-moving dialogue from them. I understand that the film is based on a novel and that the filmmakers wanted to stay as true to them as possible, but with actors like that how can you not try to make these characters come to life off the page using their unique acting styles? I also found that the splitting of Mockingjay into two parts was unnecessary as the tension-building in this film only works if the events of Part 2 are seen in succession, not a year later. I would have preferred a three-hour movie instead of 2 two-hour films released a year apart.

Regardless it is a decent filibuster film due to its strong political commentary that makes most fans, die-hard and casual, wish that the final film was released at the beginning of 2015. Even if it burns, we burn with it because no matter what fans will see it for the highly anticipated climax of this great series.

The action scenes (while very few) were so cool to watch. But the ending is what really shocked me! Don't worry, I won't spoil anything just in case you haven't seen it. But the isn't without its flaws. Some people really dug the propaganda story element. Personally, it felt over-used and felt like a gimmick throughout the film. That was probably the biggest problem with the entire film, the propaganda stuff felt like it loss sight of the character of Katniss. I couldn't root for this character because she's basically being used to promote great propaganda messages when in reality she doesn't even want a war. It didn't even feel like a big war was going on. In the end, propaganda flooded this entire film, the first act of the film was slow and un-engaging, but eventually picks itself right back up about halfway through the film and delivered an awesome climax that took me by surprise. Overall, I'm going to give Mockingjay Part 1 a B! Expand

All of the excitement of the games is gone. Instead Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is holed up in with the rebels. Since she's won her Oscar, they gave her plenty of tear time. She spends most of the movie angry or sad, while the insurgents mold her image to lead the rebellion. The first hint of combat is almost an hour in and less than 2 minutes long. The only other action takes place entirely inside the security of a bunker. This is clearly a setup for the final installment, so it's best to avoid this one completely. Expand

I have been truly taken by surprise with The Hunger Games movie series.
When the first one came out I knew nothing about it except that the
books were quite popular. Needless to say my first viewing of the first
one I enjoyed it a lot but also was disturbed that it was considered a
story for young adults. Now skip ahead and I loved Catching Fire and
for me Mockingjay part 1 is every bit as good as Catching Fire in its
own ways. It may not have the action that made the first 2 such good
movies but where it lacks in action it makes up for with excellent
acting and a compelling story. The war is beginning and the finale
looks to be glorious. This is a dark and morose movie. You wont find
hardly any smiles and very few laughs but thats not a bad thing.

We are being thrust into a world where the Government is corrupt and a
civil war is brewing, it would seem odd if it wasn't occasionally if not
mostly depressing. But its not the kind of depressing that is going to
make you leave the theater sad, no its going to make you leave the
theater hungry for more. I care so much for these characters that I am
finding myself heavily invested in their struggle. Katniss is in a dark
place in this movie as she finds herself the reluctant symbol of the
rebellion against the Capital. Its odd that after all she's done she
doesn't realize her importance or at least doesn't seem to want the
importance. She's the reluctant hero and Im starting to get a martyr
vibe. It was a treat once again to see Phillip Seymore Hoffman grace
the screen in what is his last fully completed movie. He filmed all but
one scene for the second part. Julianne Moore joins the cast as the
leader of the rebellion, President Coin and she is a welcome treat.
It's nice this franchise was able to lock in such powerhouse actors,
just shows that they believe in the material.

This movie isn't going to satisfy action junkies and some may feel that
overall not much happens to move the story forward but I believe there
is enough going on here to keep you entertained from start to finish. I
didn't want it to end and am not looking forward to the long months of
counting the days until I get to see the finale to this brilliant
series.

Whilst unquestionably the weakest of the three films to date it still has much to commend it. Top of the list has to be the excellent Jennifer Lawrence for whom the word coasting doesn't seem to exist in her vocabulary. With this role she has created a female heroine the like of whom hasn't been seen since Sigourney Weaver delighted us in the 'Alien' films. The tone of this chapter is certainly darker (even without all the killing) and there is less action and more exposition, but somehow it all works. Julianne Moore is a welcome addition to the cast and effortlessly integrates herself into the film. The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman shamefully has little to do in this his last film appearance and Liam Hemsworth is limp and uninteresting as Lawrence's Conflicted love interest. Still, it's all very watchable even though more will be expected from next year's final act. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was bad. I haven't read the books, nor will I ever read them if they have anything in common with the movie other than the title. Don't waste your time or money.

The movie is boring and the logic of the battles and their world is absurd and will bother you. It seems like it was written by a child who was too lazy to even read Sun Tzu. The social commentary is weak at best, and everybody in the movie is so stupid you pretty much want them all to die.

Can we talk about the names? I couldn't concentrate on the bad dialogue because the names were too distracting. Catnis? Katnips? Catnitz? Peta? PETA?! Pita? Pedo? PanAm?!?! The world is named after Pan American airlines? WTF. Gail? Gale? Named after wind?

Most of the movie is Catneets crying because she is frustrated about boys and can't journal about it or something, and then one of her guys gets turned into Gollum in the end. Spoiler. That's pretty much the whole thing. Also, some dudes run up a tree because leaves are, apparently, bulletproof.

There's a cat in the movie. People laughed at the cat. People love cats.

Catnyss shoots down a plane with an arrow. Also, some guy is promised a Trident by a handicapped version of Q from the bond films. They are at war. Trust me, he doesn't want a Trident. He wants a gun. A large gun. Give him a gun, Q.

FYI. You can choose between Rebel Leather, Derelicte (throwback), or Marie Antoinette as your costume choice.

Underground bunkers need underground bunkers in the bunker, apparently.

Don't ever blow up a hydroelectric dam with your planes or bombs. Send unarmed people with some wooden pallets full of bombs instead. They will die, but hey, its worth the footage.

People without tongues can't talk, but they sure can whistle!

How many people total are in this world? About 100K? The districts are the size of a high school.

Anyway. This thing is bad. Go watch Running Man or Battle Royale and have some fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie confused me. There is a part where she is looking at all the burnt corpses of her compatriots that makes me feel like it is trying to be a gritty war movie. But in the end it was just a girl adventure movie with the obligatory romance, crying scenes, and romance cliche #496 the part where the two lovers don't understand each other. PETA I mean Peeta at one point turns evil only for the reason to justify Catpiss being sad and angry. I am genuinely baffled how popular this movie is not worth my money. Expand

The action sequences are drastically lesser as compared to the first two installments, but it works well as a bridge to connect what has already happened previously and to expect what is yet to come. It is clear to see the main intention behind to separate this adventure into two parts, which might look necessary providing that it has just covered a quarter of the last book, but unfortunately rather than presenting further details, it keeps on dragging certain unnecessary parts even though the political satire seems to be quite smart, if audiences are patient enough to follow the dialogues. As the core of the story line, Academy Award winner - Jennifer Lawrence undoubtedly performs extremely well physically, mentally and emotionally once again as Katniss Everdeen, it also presents a stunning ending compared to Catching Fire; not to say boring but overall this chapter appears to be a little bit overlong and weak, causing the lack of powerful revolution and rebellion spirits. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its really just okay to me. There's plenty of flaws because of how they stretch the hell out of it. Manly because of the idiotic splitting of the final chapter. There's scenes of them just walking around for like three minutes or of them just sitting there in silence for three minutes. I don't get it. The book is small enough for one movie. The movie is half down and the conclusion to this one felt that way. Just ends. This more about the story then the movie (fault is manly on Susan), it's about political gain for majority of the movie. Just trying to outwit the other ones with the better/more powerful message. Nonsense really. The action and CGI is pretty strong and the performance
s by the cast was the best out of the series, so that boasts it up a lot. The dramatic tension of who's dying or whats goes going to happen next was pretty powerful. The haunting details and showings of death, destruction, fear, etc.were powerful. Its just bogged down by a slow and boring plot, not enough fighting, half a movie, dumb plot about political power, etc. Overall I enjoyed it but nothing special and the worst of the series. 7.9/10

Jennifer Lawrence was great as always & so was the cast and the CGI for Philip Seymour Hoffman. The score was good and this one song by Lorde that I liked.
Overall, it was good. I know so people were complaining that movie had to be broken up in 2 parts but that's good because I don't want an overstuffed finale and it ends up terrible and disappointing like Spider-Man 3, X-Men:The Last Stand & The Matrix Revolutions. So I'm happy that they split it up because this movie got a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes and the HG1 got a 84% & HGCF got a 89% and the final movie can get like a 91% or something.

Gladly I reallyBefore I watched the movie, I was reading/watching some reviews about Mockingjay Part 1. They complained that Mockingjay should have been one movie instead of two and that makes me a bit worried about my movie experience. Gladly I really enjoyed the movie a lot as a fan of The Hunger Games.

Sure, it has less action than the previous two movies. I am not quite surprised that some people who didn’t read the books got really bored watching the movie. But I am quite surprised that some book readers got bored watching the movie. They should have known that the first half of the book is more on dialogue than action.

The movie used its 2 hours and 5 minutes length very well. I was amazed how every detail in the first half of the book was translated to the big screen while also adding new scenes outside Katniss’ point of view in the books. They don’t feel like fillers at all, they felt important to the narrative and that is really good when you add new scenes never featured in the books.

Though Francis Lawrence did not re-imagine the way he directed Catching Fire in this movie, his direction is amazing in this movie. I love how dedicated he was in directing in this movie, especially the way he directed the propaganda videos for the movie.

Speaking of propaganda videos, it turned out to be much better than I expected. Some people say it’s really cheesy but that’s the point of a propaganda video, they’re cheesy and one sided. I have seen some North Korean propaganda videos to back this up. I really want to see the propaganda videos in their own full form. I hope it’s one of the extras for the movie when it comes out on home media.

The cast performances are excellent in this movie. Every actor and actress in this movie did a perfect job portraying their characters. Of course, Jennifer Lawrence did another great job portraying the character that made her a household name. It’s nice to see the new actors in this trilogy like Julianne Moore and Natalie Dormer in this movie. I can’t wait to see more of them in Part 2. Despite his short time appearance, Josh Hutcherson did his best acting ever as Peeta in this movie. He is no longer the pretty boy anymore and he is now a better actor than he was in the first movie. Also, I am glad Effie is in this movie. In the book, she only appears in one or two scenes which is in the near end of the book while the District 13 version of Effie named Fluvia takes her place. Elizabeth Banks played Effie so good that Effie as a character is likable for the fans. So it’s nice to see Effie taking over Fluvia’s role because Fluvia is not very likable compared to Effie.

The movie ended pretty well to leave us hanging without being anti-climatic. Too bad we have to wait for a year to see the finale.

I wouldn’t say this movie is better than Catching Fire because of its lack of action scenes but the penultimate chapter of The Hunger Games trilogy is entertaining with its compelling political themes, every book detail featured in the movie that will delight the book readers like me, excellent direction, excellent cast performance and an ending that makes you want more.

This is a good first part of the last Hunger Game films. The story is great, the characters were good, there isn't much action, but the end feels very cheap. So overall, it's a good movie with a bad ending.

"Moo Moo Moo Moo" which translates " haha I've just milked your money!" this piece of junk should have been made direct to dvd or something. Plot, sequence, dialogue all beating around the bush just to lead up to part 2. I felt so violated!

You can skip “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” without missing anything.

It seems the main story behind Part 1 is to make Katniss a ‘product’ to sell the idea of overthrowing President Snow to the remaining citizens of District 13 and making her the face of the revolution. There are two ‘action’ scenes, one being Katniss trying to take down a plane with her bow and arrow and another a rescue mission but the rest is a lot of talk and huge TV screens for the president and the leader of the uprising to give speeches.

Jennifer Lawrence, as always, has an interesting face to watch as it says a lot. Liam Hemsworth is given more screen time while Josh Hutcherson a lot less. Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Jeffry Wright do good with what little screen time they get. The standout here is Elizabeth here who has to do a lot when style, glamour and color are not available to her. Philip Seymour Hoffman died during the production and his role is pieced together which instead of honoring the man in his last film role diminishes his effectiveness. Julianne Moore is introduced as the new leader trying to bring down the president but really has nothing to do except make speeches though there is one short scene between her and Lawrence that is sharp.

The only reason to see “the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” is if you like watch Jennifer Lawrence, otherwise I would say skip it and wait for part 2 a year from now.

It is clearly just an attempt at raking in more money. I have read all the books and was wondering how they could possibly stretch the last one into two movies. The entire movie is boring and a waste of the audiences time. Scenes are full of unimportant information and stretch on for way too long. As good as the first two movies were, this one just doesn't live up in any way. The only purpose of it is to give people a reason to pay to go see the ending next year. I was expecting much more and even thought they would have ended it a little later into the story. This movie feels unfinished and will leave you wondering why they spent two hours telling you a half hour story. The pacing of the first two was great, but this time you will yawn guaranteed. Expand

The real dummys were going into Mockingjay. This film has unbelievably poor characters and the emotions were whipped up in blender and splat onto the screen. I very much liked the way each character is portrayed. Jennifer Lawrence's acting is amazing and so is Woody Harrelson. This film is impacting yet funny where it needs to be. The films have a more and more complex plot as they go on. This is an excellent film, however, I believe the next one will be even better, this film is leading up to the second part (obviously), I think it has managed as well as being marvellously entertained to watch. I would recommend this film, though start at the beginning if you haven't seen the others, the films are highly plot orientated. Which I think is one of their best features. Expand

Though it suffers from a lack of definite action and an almost unforgivable penchant to tease the audience of its impending final moments, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" is an undeniably intriguing film with solid turns from its leads.
