Some people think this movie is fascist propaganda.

Some people are very bad at understanding movies.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is an overt attack on the principles of fascism, accelerationism, jingoism, the works. It's a movie which largely owes its narrative/thematic arcs to Dickens' A TALE OF TWO CITIES, which is a book mostly about one city, materially, and two cities, spiritually. Like that novel, TDKR is about a manipulative, ideology-free agent who seizes control of anti-establishment sentiment created under a borderline-fascist police state to seed dissent and violence until he is a god-king.

Batman is there, too, and all of the movie fundamentally happens because he's a selfish, horny **** who had no business being a superhero (in this narrative). This is a movie about falling, failing, climbing out of the wreckage of the consequences of your actions and then punching the manifest form of everything you swore to oppose in the face until he gets shot by Catwoman on a motorcycle

Continuing on from The Dark Knight in its themes of justice, it brings about talk about Gotham’s belief of righteousness, their belief in falsely-placed morality and justice, their loss of hope, and Bruce’s loss of his self.

Reclining into the shadows of his mansion and his own pitfalls as Bruce Wayne, Batman is no longer, in this post-Dent act world of Gotham; a Gotham cleaned up by Harvey’s covered-up white knight legacy - a constant reminder of hope and justice, but a constant deterrent of Bruce’s reign as Batman and Batman’s dark knight symbol of heroism to Gotham and its people. It’s a dark world of hope, conflicting yes, almost oxymoronic, a’s hope should rival darkness, but unknowingly to Gotham, this false hope that has been promised only brings forth darker, grimmer consequences for them.

In that grim consequence the arrival of Bane and the League of Shadows; their impending doom upon Gotham, in what they consider to be “justice”, which brings us back to heavy themes of morality and in where it lies in justice, themes which lived and breathed heavily throughout this film’s predecessors, the two previous instalments in the trilogy, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Is there any sense of morality in their strive for what they consider justice? To them perhaps, but to the people of Gotham, it’s a senseless, sinful act of murder and chaotic, anarchic undoing for all that Dent stood for and all that Batman as symbol tried to stand for and took the fall for. Its unrelenting as a tide against the white knight hope and light of Dent’s figure as a clean, just and assured DA.

On the spotlight of Bane and the League of Shadows, I must praise Hardy. Commanding, brooding, dominating. Every scene he’s in is his to take, his to reign over in power, to shadow over; his presence is colossal over this film and among some of the best villain performances. I think he’s also just neat because of how funny he is at times, like he can get so comical with his stoic-sounding lines that are just ironic, and he is insanely quotable as a character alone.

There’s so much I could say about The Dark Knight Rises that already has been said but I just love it and think that even its absurdity, it is fully embracing of its bigger-than-life theatrics and its gargantuan blockbuster scale, and in that embrace, it becomes such an emotional, cathartic, powerful, intimate yet large scaled finale to my all-time favourite film trilogy.

It’s not just an awe-dropping, hard-hitting cathartically moving finale but also an inspiring story of rising from our own fears and our own downfalls, to form our own realities. But even with rising from fear, it tells us to embrace fear, one of the most human feelings, to move on from what we fear and what is holding us back as a whole. Bruce rises from his reclusion to become Batman again, to fend off the doom Bane brings to Gotham, but defeated by Bale, he is broken (even literally - back break!) and thrown down a pit of darkness (literally again - Bane’s hellish pit!), but through this fall he rises again, The Dark Knight Rises, and he goes back to save Gotham, because even if it isn’t what Gotham needs, it’s what Gotham deserves - according to Bruce - and he “sacrifices himself” to save his city. He climbs out of the pit by embracing his previous fear of death. By acknowledging that he fears death, he is able to embrace the feeling and rise above it, climbing out of the pit and of his own downfall and fears to save Gotham once again. Also, in this sacrifice, he gets to be reborn, and in this rebirth of himself, no more Batman, no more Bruce Wayne, no more the person and symbol that held him back from moving on and leading another life. This rebirth only known to Alfred, in line with a vision Alfred would imagine in his previous travels when Bruce was away in Batman Begins. It’s a beautiful rebirth that Bruce deserves and a rebirth he deserved.

Yeah, I love The Dark Knight trilogy as a whole and I just adore The Dark Knight Rises, as a film and as a perfectly cathartic finale to the best, and my favourite trilogy. I love Nolan and his vow towards practicality and theatricality, and they’re majorly at play here, especially with Bane’s prison and that incredibly awing plane scene that opens the film with suspense and sets the thrilling, brooding tone of the film.

Furthermore, on a final note, this brooding finale to the trilogy, on 15/70mm IMAX, is an essential watch. A colossal, epic, larger-than-life and truly suspenseful cinematic experience of the highest senses and highest qualities.

Alex’s review published on Letterboxd:
Christopher Nolan concludes his Batman trilogy with flawless intensity. This is a fine conclusion to a wonderful series of films. This trilogy has the distinction of joining the Indiana Jones trilogy, Bourne films and of course the original Star Wars films as flawless masterworks of the cinematic medium. This is a spectacular film, one that reconfirms Nolan's as one of today's greatest filmmakers. This is the darkest chapter in Nolan's franchise. Eight years after Batman has retired, he is called upon once again. I felt that this was the most poignant and chilling Batman film. Brilliantly acted and directed. This is one of the best action films of the year and is destined to be a classic of the genre. This film tears across the screen and delivers something special. As far as I'm concerned this was better than The Avengers, only because I felt that this film had a bit more substance to its story. The Dark Knight Rises makes you feel all sorts of human emotions, Melancholy, hope, happiness, this film really is something unique. I had chills during the film. This is one epic film, and all involved should be proud of what they accomplished. I personally feel that this was one of Christopher Nolan's greatest accomplishments as a filmmaker. This film is destined to become one of the classic superhero films. In a way, Nolan's trilogy should be viewed as Batman's redemption because after the train wreck Batman & Robin, Christopher Nolan gave us two excellent Batman films that redefined the genre. Now with this third part, he completes his trilogy beautifully. What this film possesses is a poignant story that just elevates the trilogy to new heights of excitement.

This film starts off slow, but it doesn't take too long for the action to take over. Once it starts, boy does it start. This is the action film of the year; if you're a fan of Batman you will certainly love this film. While The Joker proved an incredible adversary for Batman, Bane is just one of the meanest, most bad assed villains that Batman has faced yet. In regards to Bane's voice, I understood quite clearly, and Tom Hardy was perfect in the part. Another performance of note is that of Michael Caine as Alfred. This time around there is so much strain in Bruce's and Alfred's relationship that you actually feel some genuine emotion for the characters, and that's what Christopher Nolan's Batman films have, emotion and feeling.

This is simply put a flawless action film that delivers a stunning cinematic experience. Even if Warner Brothers decides to reboot the franchise, the standards that Nolan has set with his trilogy will never be matched. This film is the perfect end to a franchise, and The Dark Knight Rises indeed. This is a brilliantly constructed picture that is epic, dark and explores new limits to the superhero formula.

I love every frame of this movie shame there is no space in my top 4 or else this would 100% be there. Either way, The Dark Knight Rises is underappreciated for what it is, Nolan utilizes IMAX to his best ability this time around whereas in TDK it seemed more as an experimentation. Practical stunts are still impressive, batpods, batmobile, plane stunts and so on. Leaving the pit scene is definitely top 10 CBM scenes ever, Tom Hardy plays an incredible villain that still made an iconic villain despite Heath Ledger coming right before him. Everything in the snow is extremely climactic, well made, and grand. Plus one thing I respect about The Dark Knight Rises is that it actually knows this is the ending, though making billions for Warner Bros., still advertised as the conclusion. This really is the end of the line. That’s just what makes these stories great, as you are able to see complete arcs and not a cancelled fourth film. Nolan’s trilogy feels complete because of this.

The Dark Knight Rises is iconic and a fitting conclusion to a great trilogy. Beautiful film.

Was it the greatest superhero film to date? In my eyes yes, undoubtedly. I feel I must first confess that I approached Christopher Nolan’s third, and regrettably, final entry into his Batman trilogy with a certain amount of trepidation. I think it’s fair to say I had doubts. I didn’t, for example, think it possible for Bane to outdo The Joker or even Ra’s Al Ghul in terms of villainy. This was a character that had been relegated to nothing more than mindless muscle in Schumacher’s Batman & Robin. Yet Nolan had taken The Joker and reinvented all that he was, so I held onto the glimmer of hope he would do the same for Bane. I also was sceptical about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. I simply could not believe the star of The Devil Wears Prada and Bride Wars could pull of such a role. So yes, it’s fair to say I was wary for The Dark Knight Rises.

I was not disappointed at all. As with each instalment before it, we are treated to a truly stellar cast. Christian Bale delivers his greatest performance as Bruce Wayne and The Batman, if not a career best. Gone is the headstrong, impulsive and determined crime fighter of the first two entries. In its place a haggard, gaunt shell of the man, a man drained both physically, mentally and spiritually. Gary Oldman’s Jim Gordon, now commissioner of Gotham’s Finest, is a world-weary, heavy hearted individual. He lives a forced, taxing existence, alone and with the knowledge that the city he is sworn to protect is now built upon a lie, a lie he created and a lie he must live with. Both deliver sensationally heartfelt and realistic performances as two men broken by situation and circumstance.

Anne Hathaway manages to defy all preconceptions as the Catwoman. I never thought it possible, especially in such a demanding role, but she manages to do so in dazzling style. The character requires her to be smart, sassy and sexy and she achieves all to perfection.
Against all my prior doubts, Tom Hardy manages to make Bane without a doubt one of the most memorable villains of all time, enough to rival that of Ledger’s Joker. He is not just a mass of sinewy muscle and brute strength. He is intelligent and also lithe. He is the essence of evil, a force of nature embodied in a human form. The voice was just brilliant, an excellent blend between theatricality and raw malevolence. He domineers, both physically and psychologically, and is both terrifying and believable as the terrorist mastermind.

The supporting cast are phenomenal once again. Michael Cane is magnificent as Alfred, forming the heart and backbone of the entire film. His performance is touching and genuinely moving throughout. Morgan Freeman is great as he reprises the role of Lucius Fox, bringing both intellect and humour to the film. The two newcomers to the franchise, in the form of good cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and philanthropist Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) also deliver commendable performances.

With a running time of around 164 minutes, The Dark Knight Rises is nothing short of an epic. And yet it never seems dull, which is an impressive achievement by any right. The cinematography by Wally Pfister and the musical score by Hans Zimmer manage, somehow, to improve upon those in the previous two instalments. The action is spectacular, and the set pieces are remarkably well-crafted. The story is terrific, especially for a superhero film, and it twists and turns in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Batman Begins told the story of a man without identity, a man who masqueraded with masks and disguises, whilst trying desperately to find out who he is. The Dark Knight was about Batman, a man who still has to conceal his identity, both to the world and to himself. The Dark Knight Rises is about Bruce Wayne. He no longer has the costumes and gimmicks. He no longer has the cloaks and cowls and fake smiles to hide behind. He is at his most exposed, his most vulnerable and, through that, he finds out who he is. He reaches his catharsis, as does Alfred, Gordon, Kyle and Blake, and as does the audience.

VERDICT; Perfect in every department. Exceptional directing and cinematography, an intelligent script, breath-taking action and set pieces, a magnificent score, and astonishing acting from all the cast. The Dark Knight Rises manages to be both a character-driven drama and an action-packed epic. It is emotionally riveting and intensely compelling. It is, without a shadow of a doubt the greatest superhero film ever made. A truly, truly outstanding conclusion to an unparalleled trilogy. It is a masterpiece in every respect, and Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus. 5/5 or 10/10

**** I’m stuck right now because I’m not sure if I enjoy this or The Dark Knight more. There honestly both on the same level of greatness but for completely different reasons.

I highly recommend seeing the first 2 films in order to fully understand the emotional depth of this film (as well as plot points from the previous films). Yet, on its own, it’s still an epic piece of cinema. This film clocks in around 2 hours and 45 minutes. It’s the longest of the trilogy and not a second is wasted. All the technical brilliance and emotional core of the last films are turned up to eleven in this film.
The best scene in this film isn’t even an action sequence (although the action sequences are gritty as hell and the practical effects are Viagra for the eyes). It’s the scene with Bruce Wayne listening to Alfred’s story. It’s shown near the beginning of the film and is still sticking with me. Second best scene is the ending. It’s so damn perfect.
It also just occurred to me how wearing masks is a theme throughout the film. Didn’t realize that before.

I love Bane. He’s one of my favorite villains from any movie. The Joker still holds my number one spot simply because of his motivations and how his character is written. That being said, Tom Hardy’s performance as Bane is a close second. He reminds me of a corrupt politician. This might have been intentional but what he says and does in this film is sometimes true in some sick way.

Oh yeah, the scene where he craws out of the pit. Probably one of the best scenes from any film ever. He climbs without the rope and let’s fear back into his life. This is shown when the bats come flying out of the wall. It’s just an absolutely amazing scene that…GOD! I love it.

No real complaints, I would have liked to have seen him with a little more time in the Batsuit, but I know this story wasn’t just about him being Batman.
I apologize that this isn’t a well thought out review. Every single time I watch this trilogy, particularly this film, I’m left speechless. There’re maybe one or two little things that bother me, but the overall experience of watching this is something that cannot be matched.
I wish I saw these films in theater because if I had, my appreciation for them would have been different and much greater than what they are now.
Batman is my favorite superhero and these films have done the character justice.

The trilogy is over, but the legend lives on.

Everything about the Dark Knight Rises was executed perfectly! To start things off, Christian Bale as Batman in this film is by far his best performance of the character. The other cast members such as Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway were also great in this film, especially Tom Hardy since he provided a very interesting villain for the story and he drops some of the most quotable lines of dialogue in the movie. The story of the film is another thing that really stood out. Like the Dark Knight, this film also includes significant uses of symbolism and great dialogue. I also really liked how the story focuses on the theme of morality and how there is still good in human beings. As usual, Hans Zimmer’s music is also fantastic and so are the sound effects. The Dark Knight Rises is an excellent film and Christopher Nolan could not have done a better job at ending one of the greatest stories in cinematic history. Expand

One of my favourite superhero films just above The Dark Knight. They be on the same playing field

It is 100% the brooding and epic finale to Chris Nolans Bat franchise. It is the seemingly visually compelling film in contrast to The Dark Knight 4 years earlier. It helps give us the secluded shutdown Bruce Wayne who has disappeared after Harvey Dents death. The new menacing villain, (bane) is a great addition to this film as he is played brilliantly by Tom Hardy, and completely outclasses batman in every way. Heath’s Joker will always be my Joker but Bane is the villian I remember the most from this Trilogy. I find myself quoting him The sewer scene and final battle were some of the most epic choreographed fights I've ever seen. Gary **** Oldman returns as Commissioner gordon and plays it fantastically, as we see he is very heart torn in the film as he has lived 8 years, on a lie about dents death and watched people believe Harvey was a great ' white knight '.

It’s **** good and it also shows why The DCEU failed cause DC is better at real emotional stories than a CGI **** of a mess

"A hero can be anyone." - Batman

The best superhero film that will ever be made, and the best film of The Dark Knight Trilogy. Despite a few plotholes, this film is perfect. Christian Bale puts in his best performance, as do Caine, Freeman and Oldman. This film has the best villain - Bane - and the best female lead. Anne Hathaway is miles better than Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal, because the character of Rachel was weak and annoying. Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (although cleverly the word 'Catwoman' is never said in the film) is badass and the perfect foil for Bruce/Batman. Marion Cotilliard puts in a good performance as Miranda Tate/Talia Al Ghul, but fortunately she isn't given too much screen time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt threw in a good turn as Robin John Blake.

Firstly, the plot is amazing. For me, it is far better than the plot of Batman Begins or The Dark Knight. It combines the traditional comic book film plot of Batman Begins with the more ideological and psychological themes of The Dark Knight. Bruce faces his toughest test. So tough, in fact, it requires him to fake his own death and leave Gotham. But the ending...oh Lord, it is soooooo good. Soooo clever. How did Chris Nolan come up with it? Pure genius, and that is why this film is one of the best ever.

The performances are perfect, and the weighting of screen time is perfectly balanced. A problem in previous Batman films (particularly Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight) is that The Joker was given more screen time than Batman, and this was detrimental to the film. Tom Hardy's performance as Bane is the standout performance of the film. He is absolutely magnificent. Bane is by far the best villain of The Dark Knight Trilogy, edging ahead of Ra's Al Ghul by a whisker. But where Nolan really succeeds is that he gets the balance of screen time perfect. Bane and Batman have an equal amount of screen time, and that's the way it should be. And it works perfectly.

The writing is superb. I can't think of a monologue I didn't like. Alfred's gut-wrenching revelation to Bruce about Rachel? Superb. Bane's speech in the football stadium? Brilliant. Bane's speech outside Blackgate prison? My favourite bit. Batman's 'a hero can be anyone' conversation with Gordon? Beautifully cryptic way of revealing his secret identity. It's all magic.

The many twists and turns were all unforeseen and hugely enjoyable, the action sequences were all excellent, particularly Bane and Batman's first fight in the sewer. "Peace has cost you your strength. Victory has defeated you." BOOM! Yeah, that is awesome! It had it's funny moments too. I laughed my ass off at Batman turning round to look at a police helicopter, and you knew, you JUST knew, that when he turned back Catwoman would be gone. "Oh. So that's what that feels like." HAHAHAHA! YEAH!

So, in conclusion, it is excellent throughout. There are countless excellent moments in this film. There isn't a part I didn't like. I liked Burn Gorman's small part, I liked Cilian Murphy's return, I simply loved everything about it. And will there ever be a better, more satisfying, more intriguing ending to a film? I don't think so. So watch this film...then, you have my permission to die

obviously on a technical level this film is perfect. almost the entirety of the third act is shot in beautiful imax, that’s sadly only in 16:9 on 4K. just like with the previous transfers, sound and picture are great, but this is probably the best looking film to me.

it may not seem like it at first, but just like ra’s and joker, bane is the opposite side of the same coin for batman. tom hardy perfectly embodies bane and the darkness, and obviously he’s a downgrade from joker, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the perfect villain for a finale.

hans zimmer delivers probably my third favorite score from him, with an incredible theme for bane as well as many extensions of previous themes. this is such an underrated finale. all three films mesh together so well, they feel like one. they mean so much to me, and i’ll forever thank nolan for making these films.

It is satisfying as both a stand-alone film and the conclusion to a trilogy. Far too many movie series today leave more questions than answers when they supposedly "end" (I'm looking at you, POTC). This end is probably the most satisfying since The Lord of the Rings. And I never thought there was even a way to end Batman in a satisfactory way, which made me a little tepid about it. But, yet again, Christopher Nolan proves to be one of the most original filmmakers today by taking a conventional concept (the comic book movie) and turn it into something extraordinary.

The movie also speaks as a prescient (albeit exaggerated) commentary on the culture of today; showing the irrationality that can result from poisoning the populace with class warfare and envy - as well as showing the powers that can use it to achieve their nefarious ends.

Nolan commented that the film's theme was more akin to the French Revolution, and I concur. The French Revolution was one of unbridled, irrational, bloody revenge (The villain Bane advocated executing the "ruling class," much like the French revolutionaries did to the monarchy).

The cast was brilliant. All of the actors involved were on their A game, especially Christian Bale and Michael Caine. Anne Hathaway was surprisingly good as Selina Kyle. And I have to give props to Tom Hardy as Bane, since it is difficult to emote in a mask like that.

Highly recommended. Even if you're not a fan of Batman, this film will still entertain and captivate

Anne Hathaway is awesome as Selina Kyle and proves to be a good equal for Batman, Tom Hardy is brutally great as the menacing Bane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is good as John Blake, and Marion Cotillard delivers another great performance. I cannot stress enough the brilliance of the political themes in this series, as an International Affairs and Political Science major I am absolutely fascinated by Gotham City as a thought experiment. The themes in this film felt the most realistic to me. Tom Hardy as Bane is a massively strong successor to Heath Ledger's Joker, which is arguably one of the toughest acts to follow. He brings so much more nuance to the darkness of the Batman universe.

The backstory of "the mercenary" is my favorite part of the plot, and Zimmer's incorporations of chanting into the score was ingenious in evoking constant dark intensity

And in the case of The Dark Knight Rises, a literal one. Rises begins with a Gotham City without organized crime, a satisfied and partying ruling class, and no Batman. While in the Gotham underground, once again literally, those who haven't benefited from the propoganda are searching for a false god of their own, one that radicalizes them to fight a war that doesn't actually serve them. Sounds familiar.

People say this movie is more of a Bruce Wayne movie than a Batman movie, but I'm not sure I agree. This masterpiece is a complete deconstruction of what the Batman means to the city, the people in Bruce's life, and Bruce himself. No supporting character is wasted. Alfred with his loving and deep concern for Bruce, Blake with his undying belief that good people will still do good things, and Selina's belief in the opposite.

Don't personally think comic book films or blockbusters as a whole can get more poiniant, mature, and toweringly epic than this. The best.

These are people who, for whatever reason, are tarnished; they are scarred. "The Dark Knight Rises" traces their thematic journey as they work to create legacy; not for their singular, personal redemption, but for the so-called good of the many.

Surrounding that thematic core, is a confidently assembled cinematic spectacle. The cinematography, score, action-editing, and performances are uniformly excellent. The film, overall, is tense, emotional, and gripping. Moreover, the narrative brings us full-circle, not only wrapping up a single film's story, but that of a three-film cycle. "The Dark Knight Rises" is full-bore, grand-scale entertainment.

Now this movie is why I decided to watch Batman the past couple of weeks, what a perfect movie and easily my favourite in the Nolan trilogy.

Bane is such an amazing villain. For the first time in a really long time I got the feeling like Batman’s an underdog. Batman works best when he’s an underdog and you really feel for him. The ‘rise’ climbing scene is one of the best movie scenes ever, don’t care.

This film is so emotional. It is really the first time you see Bruce get the happy ending. Even though it has an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 3.6 on Letterboxd, I’m going to say that this film is underrated. It deserves, if not, almost the same praise as The Dark Knight. Can we talk about Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a second? What a great addition to the Nolan trilogy. That is everything Bruce stands for, without a mask, gadgets, or flying Bat helicopters. The Dark Knight Rises is surely creeping onto my favourites of all time list, god damn what a beautiful movie

I'm going to be up front about this right now, thisIf I could have had a personal conversation with Christopher Nolan and asked him to make the Batman movie that I wanted to see then it would have looked exactly like The Dark Knight Rises. I'm going to be up front about this right now, this review is going to be the work of a gushing fan boy because The Dark Knight Rises is perfect.
When we last saw Christian Bale's Batman he was fleeing on the batpod from the Gotham authorities after taking the blame for Harvey Dent's death in order to preserve the greater good. Now it's five years later and Gotham is a nicer place to live but all that may be about to change with the arrival of the mercenary Bane. This happens to coincide with Bruce Wayne's first meeting with cat-like jewel thief, Selina Kyle which stirs him from the solitude he's been living in.
The overall theme of The Dark Knight Rises harks back to the advice given to the young Bruce Wayne by his father in Batman Begins - "Why do we fall? So we can learn how to get back up." That is essentially what Bruce Wayne is doing in this film, getting back up and while Bale is just as good as he was in the previous two films, TDKR feels much more like an ensemble piece. Newcomers Joseph Gordon Levitt, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Marion Couttliord and Tom Hardy as Bane all help to make this a movie on a grand scale. The real surprise here is Anne Hathaway. She makes the role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman her own, much as Heath Ledger did The Joker.
Chris Nolan has packed the films long run time with enough action sequences to rival the truck chase from The Dark Knight. He is a director with a perfect vision for this kind of thing and the expertise to put it on screen in the most mesmerising way imaginable.
And yet it's cast and action are not The Dark Knight Rises trump card. The script is stuffed with such emotion and chills moments that by the end the effect is overwhelming. A film which leaves it's viewer stunned, shocked, awe stricken and in no doubt that they have witnessed something extremely special indeed.
It will be a long time before a film comes along that is as good as The Dark Knight Rises. I'm not sure that most folk could handle watching anything quite so good so often. This is life-affirming film making of legendary status.

It was phenomenal. In fact it might be my favorite of the trilogy although I do have a special place in my heart for the Joker and the late Heath Ledger.

The one thing that really got me into this film was the fact that it was all about Bruce Wayne rather than Batman. Christian Bale in the role of Bruce Wayne is flawless. He can do no wrong in my opinion. Brilliant actor.

As for the other performances by the supporting cast members: Flawless.

The true highlight in my opinion was the always brilliant Michael Caine. I suppose I'm going to have to label this review with spoilers now so I can talk about my favorite scene in the film that truly highlighted the acting talents of Michael Caine.

So here they are. Spoilers ahead.

The "I failed you" scene in front of the tombstone was goddamned phenomenal. You could just see all the regret in Alfred pore out in that one moment and it was heartbreaking.

In fact if you didn't tear up at least a little bit in that scene then you may not be human...

While all of the other actors where brilliant I don't think any other moment in the film matches that scene.

Anne Hathaway was surprisingly very good as Catwoman. A wonderful surprise considering how I originally thought he might ruin the film.

Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Hardy were all marvelous just like I thought they would be. The mask on Bane resulted in an inability to really portray great emotion from the character but what was lost with the mask was made up for in the dialogue. I really find this film to have the strongest script of the three. All of Bane's big monologues were perfect.

Another supporting standout was Joseph Gordon-Levitt who really kind of stole most every scene he was in. Great performance.

This is absolutely the best film of 2012 so far that I've seen.

In my opinion this is the end to one of the greatest sequel-to-sequel trilogies of all time.

I expect hate for this comment:

I believe that one day this will be held in the ranks of Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, and the original Star Wars. I can already feel the hate from all of those who despise this trilogy. Keep in mind that it's my opinion. In conclusion it was utterly brilliant.

See it twice.

Seeing it a second time tonight, less than 48 hours after my first viewing, I was astonished that I never even once became impatient during its sizable 164-minute runtime. It's a film so epic, so massive, so utterly grandiose on every level that reviewing it in any kind of complete way seems an impossible--more to the point, impossibly time-consuming--task, so let's go with a roll call instead: Nolan's writing, complex and thought-provoking; his direction, as confident as it comes; the plotting, exciting and incredibly well-paced, finding the perfect balance between the introspective and the spectacular; Pfister's cinematography, awe-inspiring at every turn; Bale's Batman, as deep-seated and emotional as the character's ever been depicted; Michael Caine, absolutely heartbreaking; Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman, as dependably commanding as ever; Tom Hardy's Bane, a ferocious monster given a sort of a Hannibal Lecter blend of thoughtfulness and arrogance; Anne Hathaway's Catwoman, sexy, clever, and surprisingly funny; Marion Cotillard's Miranda Tate, endlessly mysterious and fascinating; Joseph Gordon-Levitt's John Blake, so completely likable, charming, and easy to root for that--as was the case with his Inception character--he becomes the film's unexpected MVP; the ending, a beautiful, beyond-perfect tearjerker; the number of fistpump moments, off the charts (I especially loved [redacted] popping up and [redacted-ing] [redacted] in the **** [redacted]). I realize I just complimented literally everything, but filmmaking as incredible as this deserves it. Literally the only nitpick I could muster is that there are a few scenes where characters basically speak in exposition, but these are thankfully short, infrequent, and not a big deal--certainly not enough to diminish the amount of respect I have for this powerful, rousing masterpiece. Hans Zimmer’s score is some of the best I’ve ever heard, Wally Pfister peaked, had the best choreographed action scenes out of the whole trilogy, had the most emotionally resonant story out of the trilogy for sure. TDKR was worth the wait and it met my ridiculously high standards. For starters, The Dark Knight is my favorite movie and what I consider to be an instant classic just four years after it's release. Also, Chris Nolan is my favorite director and he never disappoints me. That said, this delivers. The acting, action, cinematography, set designs, costumes, and music are all top notch, and will lead to at least 8 academy nominations come february. There are about 4 or 5 set pieces that are jaw-dropping. Bale and Caine give their best performances of the series and are the heart of the movie. New additions Hardy, Levitt, Hathaway, and Cortillard are all spectacular as you would expect. The main complaint this film has and will continue to receive is that it is "long" and "bloated". However, the long length and large number of characters gives it an epic and book-like feel. The film really takes its time in telling it's story, whereas some long movies start to rush to the end around the 2 hour mark. While there are a lot of things going on, the story is relatively simple and all of the characters have a good story arc that concludes in a great way. Ending a series is so hard because of the expectations fans build up, whether it is film, television, or books. But this film really does have an ending that should satisfy the majority of fans. This successfully earns the title of best trilogy of all time in my opinion with LOTR close behind. It is that good from beginning to end. Most of all, Nolan decided to take chances with this film when he could have played it too safe. Job well done by Nolan and company. Best Picture and Best Director nomination please.

However viewing the 2005 Christopher Nolan production, I was pleasantly shocked. Then after my huge expectations for, "The Dark Knight", Christopher Nolan blew my expectations to the dust. Will the same happen with the 3rd and last film, "The Dark Knight Rises"? Quite simply, Yes! My big expectations were once again, blown away. What a production! This is a true cinematic experience, to behold. The movie exceeded my expectations in terms of action, and entertainment. The editing, sound, score, visuals, direction and action are all top notch. The film contains a fine cast of talented actors. Christian Bale, of course still makes is a great Batman. Michael Cain is fantastic, as he always is. He gives such a powerful performance, he really ought to be considered for an Oscar nomination. Tom Hardy as Bane is utterly terrifying, at times, and completely ominous. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle is a scene stealer. She is completely engrossing. Everyone is so great, the dynamic scenes between the actors are so well done, so well written, and so well directed. The Dark Knight Rises is is emotionally riveting and amazing to view.

At a running time of almost 3 hours, the film never becomes dull, which is pretty impressive. The movie's action sequences are spectacularly well created and very intense. The dialogue between the character's are intelligent and highly believable. The movie's soundtrack is terrific and really exemplify's many of the movie's scenes. Extremely well editing and sound use really develop many of the movie's action scenes, so it's not just explosions and visuals like in many other movies. Nolan creates a grand, dirty, engrossing world, and his action sequences just hum. In conclusion, this film is a gorgeous reminder that great writing and direction can enhance any movie-going experience, even superhero movies, which are usually thought of as mindless entertainment. I am wholly satisfied with Christopher Nolan's vision and thank all who worked on this film for bringing such an intricate interpretation of its very famous literary source. I cannot recommend this film anymore than I have, I just have to say everyone and anyone should see it. 10/10

Tom Hardy did an excellent job playing such an evil part. The twists were just as great. By far though, the star of the movie was Anne Hathaway for her stunning performance as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's finally here..and boy is it here. The Dark Knight Rises flies in with a wave of momentum after The Dark Knight and blasts straight through it with great purpose and meaning. This isn't just a big-budget summer blockbuster that 'needs to be done'...this story has been spawned from the minds of men & women who genuinely care, respect and understand the batman franchise and its fans. Christopher Nolan's trilogy has been commended for its realism and genuine understanding of the graphic novels. He has sent us into a world of fear, chaos and now pain with the arrival of Bane. Tom Hardy has made this character so genuine and frightful, once again (in true Nolan fashion) he has gone to the source material and has understood that Bane is as much brain as he is brawn...and when it comes to brawn, it isn't mindless attacks and nonstrategic offence aka Poison Ivy's **** Bane has been trained in similar fashion to how Bruce Wayne was, thus making him the perfect adversary for The Caped Crusader. With all the attention on Heath Ledger's 'replacement', some of the shine may have been taken off of Christian Bale. In this case he shines through all the way, whether he is an overwrought & pessimistic Bruce or a resurgent & passionate Batman; Bale delivers a fantastic character. He has really adapted and evolved both sides of Bruce, but has stayed true to who he was in both Batman Begins & The Dark Knight. Micheal Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman return on TOP FORM and most importantly relevant form. Just like in the previous Nolan films all 3 characters were necessary in aiding, understanding and advancing Batman the person and Batman the story. As it has been said before, Alfred is his heart, Lucius the brain and Gordon the conscience...that rings true more than ever in TDKR. As well as Tom Hardy, the other newcomers each add a new dimension to the franchise without denting (no pun intended) it at all. Anne Hathaway is a well orchestrated Selina Kyle; sexy, deviant, smart & well organised character who primarily looks out for 'NO.1'...she is awesome, the best Catwoman I have seen (sorry Michelle, not so much Halle). Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Marion Cotillard portray 2 characters that may be foreign to some people...but whether you have heard of them or not, they will astound you with their respective contributions to this epic tale.

All in all TDKR is an outstanding story that is brilliantly acted and fantastically directed. Christopher Nolan has given us something that we can cherish for a lifetime. Whether you favour the origins of The Caped Crusader, the anarchy of The Joker or the all-out war and destruction of Bane it doesn't matter…for the 1st time in a long time there is no weak link. They can all be adored collectively and appreciated as the best comic- book films ever.

Goyer. Featuring the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the final installment in Nolan's Batman film trilogy, and the sequel to Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). Christian Bale reprises the lead role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with a returning cast of allies: Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as James Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. The film introduces Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), a sly, morally ambiguous cat burglar, and Bane (Tom Hardy), a mercenary bent on destroying Gotham City who forces an older Bruce Wayne to come out of retirement and become Batman again.

Christopher Nolan was hesitant about returning to the series for a second time, but agreed after developing a story with his brother and Goyer that he felt would conclude the series on a satisfactory note. Nolan drew inspiration from Bane's comic book debut in the 1993 "Knightfall" storyline, the 1986 series The Dark Knight Returns, and the 1999 storyline "No Man's Land". Filming took place in locations including Jodhpur,[5] London, Nottingham, Glasgow, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, and Pittsburgh. Nolan used IMAX cameras for much of the filming, including the first six minutes of the film, to optimize the quality of the picture. A variation of the Batplane termed the "Bat", an underground prison set, and a new Batcave set were created specifically for the film. As with The Dark Knight, viral marketing campaigns began early during production. When filming concluded, Warner Bros. refocused its campaign: developing promotional websites, releasing the first six minutes of the film, screening theatrical trailers, and sending out information regarding the film's plot.

The Dark Knight Rises premiered in New York City on July 16, 2012. The film was released in Australia and New Zealand on July 19, 2012, and in North America and the United Kingdom on July 20, 2012. Upon release it received critical acclaim and is widely considered by publications to be one of the best films of 2012.[6][7][8][9] Like its predecessor, the film grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office, making it the second film in the Batman film series, and by extension the second film based on a DC Comics character, to earn $1 billion. It is currently the tenth-highest-grossing film of all time, the third-highest-grossing film of 2012, and the third-highest-grossing superhero film of all time

There are not enough words to describe the magnitude of this film, let alone space to even attempt it. So I'll do my best with what I have.

This film is perfect in every way. The synergy of elements, both technical, dramatic, and those supplied by the audience (such as emotional investment in the series, etc.) make it perfect. Writer/Director Chris Nolan understood how invested the audiences were in this series and he hit every single note perfectly.

The picture unfolds like a beautiful nightmare. We ease back into the world of Gotham well enough that we recognize the world we left briefly from the Dark Knight. Instantly we feel that the stakes are higher, and as the film goes on, the stakes are raised even further, seemingly impossibly so. Then, finally, as the picture hits its stride, we find ourselves engrossed in a spectacle the likes of which have not been approached since Lord of the Rings.

The depth of story and character, like so many of Nolan's films, are what bring all the elements to a head. Bane is maniacle, calculating, determined, and above all, undeniably and irrevocably brutally violent. This violence takes all forms, and manifests itself into some of the most brilliantly awe-inspiring action sequences you will EVER see.

Dark Knight Rises gets better with every passing second, between the action, the intrigue, the drama, and the mystery, the final result is nothing short of stunning. And while this may be an opinionated review, I beg every person alive to experience what this film has to offer.

I swear on my life this movie is pure perfection

ero movies
Apologies, Dominus, I have done many reviews here but to get this one right took me 5 years and multiple re-watchings.

Conclusion? Not merely great, but the "great-est" superhero film of all time. The story is iconic and majestic in scope. The script not merely good, it borders on perfection. The performances are nothing less than stunning.

Bale and Oldman could not give a bad performance even if you asked them. Hathaway has never looked this good, her height and frame infusing her Catwoman with a vibe never seen before or since. And the almost-invisible Tom Hardy (one of the greatest actors of our age, BTW) makes Bane as interesting a character, if not moreso, than even Darth Vader himself.

So why did this review take me 5 years? To discover the dissonance between the three parts of the trilogy, which is the only flaw, the Achilles Heel of the boxed set.

Ordinarily a trilogy should be harmonious and consistent. Look at the original Lord of the Rings as the best example. Each part not only stands on its own but, taken in sequence, the story builds, the characters become clearer, everything works to a conclusion.

Like an orchestra reaching a crescendo.

Not so here. The whole is weakened by the sum of the parts. Batman Begins is, frankly, sloppy. Great ideas and even great performances are lost in a weak narrative with a unsatisfying conclusion.

The Dark Knight has become iconic in its own right but not because of the way it continues the story, but rather because of the amazing one-of-a-kind performance by Ledger.

It is only when we get to Part 3 that we achieve perfection. This film is not merely better than than the first two, it may be the best film of its genre, ever

It is everything you thought it would be and much more. Most certainly a beautifully crafted psychological crime thriller and a truly satisfying conclusion that does justice to the trilogy. Batman isn't exactly the cool hero with fancy gadgets nor is he the strongest. His inner strength is tested, he is physically and mentally pushed to his limits and all odds are against him. What an epic finale!

Christian Bale as always is perfect as Bruce Wayne and Batman but Tom Hardy's portrayal of Bane almost steals the show. Unlike Batman's mask where you get to see the emotions through eyes and mouth of the actor, Bane's mask covers his entire mouth, leaving only his eyes in view. Despite an obscured face, actor Tom Hardy seems to have found a way to brilliantly express his emotions physically! He projects Bane's character, the strength, pain, attitude and the darkness by movements and body language alone! Bane is as intellectual as he is strong, which makes him genuinely terrifying. He is easily the most formidable of all Batman villains in the trilogy and simply owned the scenes he was in.

Hans Zimmer does an excellent job with the background score that sets the pace of the movie and compliments the visual artistry. The music makes you feel the excitement and energy of the movie. Both Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt do justice to their characters. Hathaway is believable as Catwoman. Last but not the least, Michael Caine gives a very effective and heartfelt performance as Alfred.

The special effects in this movie are so good, that it seems very real. The Batpod, which made its appearance in Dark Knight is back in this movie and it is exceedingly cool. But wait till you see 'The Bat'!

This movie has a stellar start, will keep you on the edge of your seat with adrenaline-pumping action sequences, intense drama both emotional and dark, has several layers of the story interweaving with frequent curve balls thrown in. But the movie never loses momentum, it ultimately sets you up for a fantastic climax and probably a very unpredictable yet satisfying end. It will keep you guessing till the very last second and that is the magic of Christopher Nolan's amazing masterpiece, The Dark Knight Rises.

I will give this movie 10 out of 10

I know people love Heath Ledger's Joker turn, and so do I, but come on, this is Batman. I don't care about the Joker, I care about Batman. The Dark Knight rises corrects that and puts the spotlight on Bruce Wayne/Batman, and I love it. Christian Bale is THE PERFECT Batman, and any substitute to me will only try. This movie cements that, and I love his turn. Joseph Gordon-Levitt once again proves that he can hold his own, and Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are superb as usual.Tom Hardy after Bronson has always been on my good actors radar, and what a menacing Bane he makes. Might I say Anne Hathaway is absolutely brilliant as Catwoman, She is sexy, strong, cunning and yet fragile. Last but not the least, Christopher Nolan sir, how can a Batman fan of 25 years thank you. Wow, and as I bid adieu with tears, thank you a billion times for doing what you did. Oscar or not, you are THE BEST director Expand

Been a die hard fan of the Nolan's batman series and last 2 movies so far, I took a day off from work and went to see first day first show as i couldn't have waited any longer. I definitely went in with high expectations and boy i wasn't expecting high enough.

This is a master piece and anyone who claims to be a movie buff should/must see this movie as there is no way one see this movie and not go like WOW a thousand times. This movie reminded me of Shawshank redemption a bit and it showed that summer action movie can have emotion too...

This is Nolan's best work by far and if you look at his previous work like memento, dark knight, inception and more you can imagine he is truly the master filmmaker of our generation and generations to come.

Christian bale has given his best performance so far i think, it matches the performance he gave for fighter. All other characters are played to perfection by all the brilliant actors and the most formidable cast that one can ensemble...

Amazing music, amazing dialogs, amazing story/screenplay and above all an amazing ending to this brilliant trilogy.

I know Chris Nolan has decided not to direct another batman movie, but i hope he does, i hope

The movie has been brilliantly made and tailored with excellent story, action and suspense. Most of the trilogies end with an average 3rd movie, but this one is a level above the previous one. The Dark Knight had the Joker, a freak, who kept the viewers spellbound with his anarchist methodology. This time, it's not just Bane keeping the movie so gripping for the audience with his powerful characterization and performance but Batman too, keeps the whole story so compelling with his determination & relentless attitude, to defend Gotham for anything and everything. Indeed all the characters in the movie are portrayed so well that everything looks so real as compared to a comic book. By all means, the movie is irrefutably one of the Best Movies Hollywood has ever come up with Expand

From now on, it will always be associatedWhen Nolan and company set out to conclude their Batman trilogy, they probably had no idea it would get this far and would take on this shape, resulting on a couple of unexpected public reactions. From now on, it will always be associated with the word violence. It's not the most violent film ever, but it's so well made that it conveys the sensation, visually, through its writing, acting, and directing that it might be. The film is more complex and satisfying than its predecessor, though Bane, its central villain is pure evil, an entity that no matter how much is explained throughout the film, emanates pure, ugly violence, and for many in the audience will no have any redeeming qualities, regardless of its ending. It should be acknowledged that the successful depiction of this character's nature is Tom Hardy's excellent in its portrayal. Secondary viewings might be required to fully appreciate that much more lurks beyond his obvious nature. Watch his eyes in the final scenes of the film, and you might barely begin to understand who he might be.

Bain is just one of the elements that make this film shine. There is the mysterious "Cat" or Catwoman, as some people might know her better, and some of us might even want to change her identity to something else by the time the film ends. Women do very well in this film, and Scarlett Johanson has some serious competition when one admires how wonderful Anne Hathaway is. It's just amazing that she manages to outdo the really good work Pfieffer did in the second movie Burton did with the Batman characters. Hathaway drips with physical power, and there is plenty going on behind her motivations and her complicated, flawed persona. It is truly enjoyable to see her interact with Bruce/Batman. She is too smart not to see what's going, but this makes it more difficult to make crucial decisions as the plot grows darker and darker.

Then, we have the young cop who tries to uphold justice and save the world. Lewitt has never looked so good and after 50/50 has developed into a much better actor. He's not just a cop, a detective, someone who needs a mentor. His goal is to achieve a place of greatness, maybe alongside Gordon and/or Batman. Whether he might survive the ever enveloping growing hell around him is up to the designs of Nolan and company.

There is a very interesting, intelligent, and demanding screenplay at the heart of the story which is expertly directed and executed by Nolan's superb hand. He understands his characters, knows how to keep the film intelligent, respecting its sources, and making the citizens of his fictional world as real as possible. In smaller roles, great actors like Freeman, Caine, and Oldman shine. No one is neglected, and no detail is left unsupervised, details that only help make the film much better.

In the end, we go to this films to enjoy a great film, with expertly balanced technology and good old-fashioned character development. Everything clicks here, and this is what happens when classics are

After Bruce Wayne/Batman(Christian Bale) takes the blame for Harvey Dent's crimes he goes into hiding. Bruce Wayne decides to hang up his cape & cowl since the police are hot on his trail & Gotham City is experiencing peace time. Enter Bane(Tom Hardy), a terrorist & former member of The League Of Shadows(the place where Bruce Wayne received training to have a strong body & soul) before he was ex-communicated by Ra's Al Ghul(Liam Neeson). Bane is pure evil & has a mastermind plan to destroy Gotham using a nuclear bomb. Bruce Wayne decides it is time for Batman to return after Commissioner Gordon(Gary Oldman) begs him to come back. However, this time he has Selina Kyle/Catwoman(Anne Hathaway), a thief who is also good at fighting, to help him take on Bane & his mercenaries. Wayne goes to Lucius Fox(Morgan Freeman) to get some new gadgets & this time Batman rides the Bat, a flying vehicle that moves like its namesake. The Bat has a much more advanced weapon arsenal. Bruce Wayne falls in love with Miranda Tate(Marion Cotillard) & makes her CEO of Wayne Industries after he is sacked from the post because of the company's huge losses in the years he went into hiding. When Bane initiates a devastating attack on Gotham, Gordon seeks the additional help of John Blake(Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Now, its Batman's job to save Gotham from Bane's clutches & the bomb.

This is the best movie of 2012 hands down! I doubt that any movie which is releasing in the second half of 2012 will beat this legendary epic of a film. Obviously, I went to watch this movie with sky high expectations. I was not at all disappointed! The movie surpassed my expectations & justified the enormous hype surrounding it. Christopher Nolan has done an outstanding job once again! He gives his Batman trilogy a perfect conclusion. The ending of the movie is mind blowing! A note on the performances. Christian Bale has done an outstanding job as Bruce Wayne/Batman. This is his best performance throughout the duration of his career. Michael Caine is brilliant as usual as Bruce's trusted butler & friend, Alfred. Gary Oldman is spectacular as Commissioner Gordon. Anne Hathaway is superb as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Tom Hardy is mind blowing as Bane. He's the best villain among all three Batman movies(yes, he's better than Heath Ledger's Joker). Marion Cotillard is impressive as Miranda Tate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is wonderful as John Blake. Last but not the least, Morgan Freeman is awesome as usual as Lucius Fox. The background score by Hans Zimmer is engrossing & magical like it should be. The Dark Knight Rises is better than The Dark Knight in every way. This conclusion to Nolan's epic Batman trilogy is a must watch. Watch 2 hours 45 minutes of a legendary epic that is this film.

The twist and turns in this film will just give you goosebumps and make you want to stand up and cheer every time. Sometimes it felt like you wasn't watching a film but following batman a.k.a Christian bale in every thing he did and every time he over came an obstacle you felt the sense of achievement. Also the film again has had a flawless acting cast, I can see that Bane's voice may get a little criticism because it was different but sometimes people don't give different a chance but in my opinion it was creative and added a sense of suspense. Obviously one of the main points of this film was can Tom Hardy pull off a better villain than Heath Ledger and in my opinion again, he did. in conclusion the dark knight rises was a amazing and thrilling end to the trilogy with a gripping story for the whole 3 hours and which left me clapping and almost crying at the end. *SPOILER* end of the trilogy but end of the saga Expand

First off, it's no secret that there are a ton of Batman movies and I can see why! As Christian Bale says in this movie "He's the hero anybody can be!" The very thought of batman is thought provoking and gets my imagination stirring just thinking about what I would do as Batman. So this movie has to compete with all the other Batman movies before and I really believe it sets the standard for the Batman movies to come. It also is competing with all the other trilogies that have ever been made. My opinion is this is the best Batman movie made and it's also the best trilogy ever made. For the trilogy aspect Nolan could sleep easy throughout the making of these movies knowing he had a talent like Christian Bale in the lead. The entire trilogy has an easy to watch aspect around every character in the movie for the most part remaining constant emotionally, and personality wise while the one character constantly evolving throughout the 3 films is Bruce Wayne(Bale). His transition from an old crippled man in this film to a physical specimen in order to overcome the greatest challenge of his life was very entertaining to experience vicariously through Bale, and he is such a great method actor that I literally felt the transition as I watched him perform. In all forms that Bruce Wayne takes on in this movie though, Bale holds a calm humble demeanour about it that I want to relate with, but is really amazing to me how he holds that tone throughout. I can describe Bale's acting as "Chameleon-like" or a "Shape-shifter" and his talent is on display as he evolves through this film. The glue that holds everyone together around Christian's talent is the master-communication ability of the brilliant director Christopher Nolan. I think he did a great job of simplifying the right areas so the twists really have an impact. He makes it very clear and easy to understand what he wants everyone to do, and then the result is the movie sends the message that he wants, and in this movie it's the feeling of "Pain!" Everyone experiences some level of inevitable pain in this movie and Nolan does such a great job of making this crystal clear so the viewer can experience it. This movie tells me that Nolan just gets communication on every level from subtle little shoulder shrugs, to public speaking on a podium and he helps each of the cast members communicate the emotions they are trying to get across, but he allows them to do it in the cast-members unique way, so nothing feels forced about the acting in this movie. The shots of the city in different angles and the score just added to the overall effect in the movie and I could really feel the chemistry and passion of the entire crew and cast alike. There is an aura about this film like everyone working on it knew they had a chance to be one of the greatest movies of all time and it very well could be. Without a doubt this is the most realistic super-hero movie ever made. It is also the best 3rd part to a trilogy which isn't hard because most 3rd movies in a series disappoint in general. The evolution of Bruce Wayne alone from start to finish makes this the most interesting trilogy. I highly recommend this film Expand

oiunjmwnjjw’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Dark Knight Rises arrived in cinemas on the back of deafening hype. The astronomical expectations seemed insurmountable for even a visionary of Christopher Nolan's caliber. So does Nolan deliver? Absolutely! Bold and unflinching, Nolan's operatic style makes The Dark Knight Rises an art piece of boundless spectacle and an epic of never-seen-before scope and scale. It visually obliterates the modern blockbuster with a story of daring boldness, taking your inner child on a savage ride.

The final chapter of Nolan's trilogy kicks off exactly eight years after the end of The Dark Knight. The streets of Gotham have been cleaned up but as we soon find out, all that means is that the criminals have moved underground. Having taken the fall for the death of Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne, the tycoon behind the cowl, now lives like a specter hobbling about the recesses of his fancy mansion while his faithful butler Alfred frets over him like a gawking mother goose. But something is stirring deep beneath Gotham's streets, and it is not long before Wayne once again finds himself staring into the heart of human darkness. When a hulking, masked psycho named Bane lays siege to his financial empire and plants a series of strategically placed explosives beneath the city, intending to cut off the isle's citizenry from the outside world, he hauls the bat-suit out of storage.

From there, the movie unfolds with the carefully measured pacing of an epic, that rare sequel that endeavors to deepen and expand upon what has come before rather than merely repackaging it. It returns us to Gotham and its denizens, taking its time, gradually showing us the lay of the land. And once the cogs start whirring and the machine starts to warm up, The Dark Knight Rises takes off like a rocket – with Hans Zimmer's propulsive score as its fuel. And when it fires on all cylinders, it enters classic territory.

The pedigree of the cast imparts automatic gravitas to the movie. Christian Bale gives us a Batman with a haunted quality, showing Wayne broken, rising, and risen in perfect succession. Gary Oldman retains his quiet dignity as Commissioner Gordon. Michael Caine's Alfred continues to class up the joint. Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, is sexy, confident, and offers a great balance of humor. As Officer John Blake, Joseph Gordon-Levitt musters an interesting blend of earnestness and intensity. Both Marion Cotillard and Morgan Freeman execute their parts with precision. And Hardy is sensational as the diabolical antagonist Bane. He bites into his character's motivations and transcends the movie to a place that is darker and more malicious.

Nolan gives us an intellectual, heart-pounding movie that grips like a vice from minute one and never lets go, capping off the trilogy with passion and dignity and with slam-bang entertainment. The Dark Knight Rises is both the conclusion the franchise needs and the conclusion it deserves
