Offering up challenging developments at every turn that mostly develop the decades-long franchise in a creative and fresh direction. And, though some of the decisions may be a bit more difficult to swallow than others, the sentiment to mix things up after 40 years of lore is definitely admirable. It also helps that the set pieces and lightsaber battles are all on point, and the fact that the characters and performances are all in line is also a plus. It's just the audacity and difference of it all that's gonna' a take while for me to get used to. Expand

This movie has noticeable problems, but it is not even close to the same level as Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones in terms of quality. This movie is okay, not great or horrid, just simply okay. I loved the acting (especially Ridley and Driver as Rey and Ren). The action set pieces (namely the last one), CG, and practical effects were grand as per usual in Star Wars movies. Plus, it added some interesting insight into the jedi, sith, and the force through Luke's scenes. However, there are two major problems to talk about: plot conveniences (ex-machinas) and the fact the story was far too safe by the end of the film. There are far too many conveniences with regard to things like the force and BB-8 (after you've seen the film, you'll understand) that move the plot forward when they really should not and come off as lazy writing. It also happens to make these characters look invincible with no stakes or sense of danger. With regard to my second argument, after a certain event which I will not spoil, I thought the story and universe could shift drastically and truly create a unique Star Wars film unlike any before. In the end, though, it abandons that risk completely and takes the low hanging fruit instead. Long story short, I feel a better story could have arose from these concepts and the questions left unanswered or answered poorly in this film from TFA. Overall, I did enjoy my time watching this movie, but it was far from great. However, I am concerned about the future of the franchise and the overreaction by this fanbase. Expand

Some things are somewhat dumb slapstick and quite a few protagonists will definitely not be making Episode 9, but overall it's quite surprising and refreshing movie. Some scenes still give a fan the "Now where have we seen this before?" feeling but I guess it wouldn't be Star Wars if it didn't. There are some elements that really sort of break the "logic" of Star Wars universe. If you take SW seriously and not as entertainment you might be offended by what Disney did with this movie. Get over it, it's "Science Fantasy". Expand

[NO SPOILERS]

I enjoy Star Wars and I'm a big fan of all the movies beside Episode I and II as well as the video games released on all platforms.

I went to this film with some expectations after rewatching Star Wars The Force Awakens which was a movie I quite enjoyed and I thought it was fun. And I left this one wondering a bit with some sentiment of disappointment.
Overall this movie is a huge pile of mess with some good enjoyable moments scattered here and there.

Things I like:

+ It's quite different than the others taking a slightly different direction in its settings, ideas, and characters. While not all of them hit the right spot, it's enough to keep it interesting and have the viewer curious about what will happen next. + Some of the effects are pretty good, well represented, solid characters and development with some twist and turns here and there.

+ Well done space battles.

+ A few new worlds for those that are interested.

+ Luke Skywalker

+ A nice well-done saber battle around the middle of the movie

Things I dislike:

- Unsatisfying moments, the movie doesn't deliver anything that's impactful enough to leave you with a sentiment of awe, unlike the previous ones.

- Some of the interesting story elements Force Awakens hinted at are either poor answers or they weren't answered at all. A big letdown here and a waste of good story elements that are just suddenly dropped.

- One of the biggest issues I've had with this movie is that it feels like a compilation of smaller Star Wars movies linked together to make this one. The story itself doesn't flow too well and there are a lot of inconsistencies.

- The plot is also forced with an arc parallel to the interesting bit of the story following Finn and a new character that's really unnecessary and kinda pointless in the end.

- Questionable decisions

- Snoke is a letdown and we find out nothing more about him in this movie. So if you're looking out to find out more from him, there's nothing here that will add to it.

- A lot of humor that's thrown in situations that just don't work. They remove the intensity and pressure by making jokes that aren't even that funny.

- Captain Phasma is also a letdown. She probably has as much screen time as she did in Force Awakens with the same amount of lines.

- We find out little to nothing about the story overall though to it's credit we do discover Luke's backstory as well as Ren's. Conclusion:

It's a decent movie, I wouldn't say it's bad but it's a far cry from a praise. I personally loved Star Wars Rogue One and this one falls in comparison which is a shame.
Luckily some of the characters hold up the movie with their well-acted scenes, good cinematography and camera work.
Luke Skywalker is holding up this movie and without him, it would fall even lower.
Overall it's a disappointment for the most part but there's enough in this for people to enjoy.

This one is more comparable to Revenge of the Sith, for some will be lower than Revenge of the Sith and for others, it will probably be a bit higher.

Just don't expect anything outstanding and don't think that some of your questions about Snoke, Finn, Rey and other characters will be answered here.

I did, however, enjoy the last couple of entries (the Force Awakens and Rogue One) enough to the point of anxiously anticipating this effort. I have to say though I was a little disappointed. The movie suffered from overkill resorting to the same themes over and over again. I often wondered why Mark Hamil never achieved the career accomplishments of his costars. Now I remember. He's not a great actor. There were attempts at humor that I thought was inappropriate as well. Without giving away spoilers it wasn't a total bust. There was plenty of action and a few poignant moments but I have to say overall, this one missed the mark. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is a rare beast, the kind that excels spectacularly while also being crushingly disappointing. I give credit to the director, Rian Johnson for breaking the decade old Star Wars formula and bringing something fresh and new to the table. However, it's only when you try something new that you hilariously fail. First and foremost, this movie is NOT a failure. However, some choices made in this film are puzzling to say the last. Primarily, the introduction of a new side character, Rose, and a side plot so boring and drab I can't even recall with planet it takes place on (let's refer to it as the casino planet).Rose is one of the most annoying characters I've seen on the silver screen in years, someone who's only purpose seems to be to annoy the audience constantly. Her actions are nonsensical and bog the plot down. Her character can be summed up with her forced kiss with Finn near the end of the story, as well as stopping him from saving the rebellion because "we win this war by saving what we love, not by fighting what we hate". Her accompanying storyline in the Casino planet is a waste of time and honestly feels like it's going nowhere. Moving on, while I do not have a problem with the deaths of Luke and Snoke, I do have a problem with their characterization. Snoke's death is certainly ballsy, however the lack of a backstory and who he was doesn't give the audience any reason to really care. For us, he was a CGI alien that shot lightning out of his fingertips. Finally, the death of Luke Skywalker has been something that has caused controversy for all fans. While I do not have a problem with his death and think his entire ending sequence was done very tastefully, I do not see a reason for him to die. He very well could have stayed alive, and while that would have changed the outcome of the film, it would have allowed for him to become more of a mentor to the next generation of force users as hinted by the end of the film. His death only allows for him to become more of a Yoda figure, something that I fear will cause Episode IX to become eerily similar to Episode VI. Of course, on top of this are an abundance of plot errors (they're not plot holes, but they don't make any sense as to why it happened). More significantly, why Holdo did not notify anybody about her plan regarding the transport pods. On the positive side of things, this film is incredibly well acted, and some of the design choices are truly stunning, especially the fight in Snokes palace where the fire overtakes the room, lighting up the theater, as well as the hyperdrive kamikaze scene, which was truly a jaw dropping moment. It's very well acted, and I'll be honest, the scenes with Luke, Kylo and Rey are so absorbing and interesting that I never wanted it to end. However, anything else immediately dropped my intention and I found it hard to care for anyone that wasn't Kylo, Rey, Luke and maybe Finn. Is it a 0/10? No! a 0/10 would have to be truly an unwatchable piece of garbage which this film most certainly not. Presuming that a 5/10 is average, I'd consider this film to be slightly above average. It could certainly have been tighter, the runtime didn't help. Overall, I'd recommend this movie to anyone. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of, I can see why this movie is at the very least lauded for being a divergence from the Lucas story because it is exactly that. It is a very heavy handed slap in the face to the original story established by the original series. While Force Awakens was lambasted for being a knockoff of its predecessor, Last Jedi in turn tries very forcefully to destroy any vestige of connection to the past. "Kill it(the past)if you have to" proclaims Kylo Ren and that they did. What they do not consider is if doing so was actually the right choice, so desperate they were to forge off on a path of their own. As a seemingly odd olive branch, the movie does pay fan service to the original characters with brief nostalgic moments between them, but all too fleeting, and then quickly snuffed out by the main storyline.

I will start with my main issues first. First of, the use of force powers in these latest episodes is to the point of overkill. The reason the Jedi were so revered in the original series was because their presence and their use of powers were used so sparingly and TASTEFULLY. Kylo Ren's and Rey's use of the force is so often and so blatantly excessive that they may as well have Marvel style superhero costumes on. Last Jedi also does not even attempt to offer any explanation of how Rey is basically the most powerful Jedi in existence despite the lack of training or any exposure to the force. This was already evident in Episode 7 but I was patient enough to wait for an explantion in Episode 8 but none was forthcoming, making any possible explanation in Episode 9 impossibly believable. Princess Leia meanwhile has been relegated to meme status with her space flying powers after another (way too many in this movie..or any movie) fake out death scene. Luke Skywalker also pitches in with more force power display, this time with astral projection powers which basically form the crux of the climax in this movie and devolves him from Jedi Master to cheap parlor trick magician. And of course, Rey saves the day by lifting at least 5 tons worth of boulders - again with no training. OP much?

I would have given this movie a lower score but in honesty, that is really not fair, considering the movie execution was fair in that it did what it was supposed to do: establish a new storyline for a new generation who have no connection to the Lucas mythology. It did it with some shark jumping moments, but it did it nonetheless. John Williams score as always was spot on, and I can easily say this movie falls almost completely flat and spiritless without him. Despite being way too long as most movies now in this era (are movies even really edited nowadays?) if you have never seen it before it keeps you interested, despite the short comings of the payoffs.

However, at the end this movie saddens me. As it becomes even more evident that Disney will milk this license until it is dry, the quality of content to come out will undoubtedly be diluted and it has already started. Say what you want about Lucas and his own marketing when the series was with him, but despite knowing that just like Disney he can release a movie every year and make a billion dollars for each one just on the license alone, he kept the original trilogy untouched for 15 years because I feel that he really did care about this story and his characters. And make no mistake, they are HIS characters. With this latest iteration, I don't know if the House of Mouse really feels that connected with Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe. They are well researched very sellable commodities and easily replaceable again, whenever Disney decides to restart a new trilogy, likely sooner than later.

This latest entry in the Star Wars saga seems to have been meet with much more positivity from the critics than the public making it one of the most divisive films of modern times.

Visually at least the movie is stunning, easily the best in the franchise, and there are some great action sequences throughout the movie. When watching it at the cinema it was easy to get swept along for the ride and I can’t say I wasn’t at least somewhat entertained overall. Unfortunately The Last Jedi simply has too many faults to be considered a great, or even good, movie. Even as someone who is only a minor fan of the franchise I was severely disappointed with the handling of Luke Skywalkers character (he does little but mope around for much of the running time) and the awkward attempts to add some “Marvel” style humour to proceedings not only fell flat but often undermined key events. The number of plot holes, even by the standards of a sci-fi movie, is also staggering. I won’t list them all here, there are plenty of YouTube videos and websites that’ll take you through them all if you so wish, but it’s hard to believe a whole team of writers failed to see so many issues.

If you’re looking for a narratively coherent movie you’re looking in the wrong place, particularly if you’re a big fan of the franchise, but there is some entertainment to be had if you’re willing to just go along with whatever the movie throws at you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At 44 years of age, and having seen all previous Star Wars films I was astounded that none of my 3 teen age children had any interest in watching this film with me. Not even my wife would go - I had to see it alone.

There is a significant difference in the feel of this film compared to the previous ones. While it retains the inter-galactic CGI fight scenes, most of the acting is done by humans - and a significant shift towards women. As a result there is significantly less gunslinger and instead infused with more compassion and a strong feminist undertone.

While you may feel this is undeserved, I have but three complaints of things that need to be restored to these films:
1. Fight scenes need to be more convincing. The light saber action from the leads was very weak and contrived. I've seen high school plays with the same level of physical competence.
2. Its time to work harder on the mechanics/Sci-Fi harder. The drawn-out chase of the resistance cruiser was simply preposterous. The pursuing ships have jump/light speed capability, plenty of fuel and greater numbers - they could easily pop forward and turn around to corner them. Sigh.
3. Having incompetent youths smacks of Harry Potter, not Star Wars. If you can't break in and bust up the tracking device, then fighting your way (or lucking your way) out of being surrounded and captured is also ridiculous.

I give this film a 6 because of the visual spectacle. The plot was decent but choreography, music/sound and the engagement/entertainment level have definitely faltered. Lets just hope they sell enough tickets in China to continue investing in future films.

It is a great film for a newer generation of movie go-ers and fans, but a bitter pill to swallow for long standing fans. As a fan, I give this film a 4.5. They destroyed Luke, but considering it is obviously targeting a new audience, I'll score it a 6. The Last Jedi has the Marvel humor this generation has come to expect in movies. Nothing can be taken seriously, because apparently this generation likes to live in bubbles where everything is Disney princess and princesses and happiness. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I am writing this "review" just to clear my head and get back to my normal life. I am literally obsessing on how mixed I feel toward this movie. I can't concentrate. So here's my pros and cons list. I will probably update. (again, just to keep my head clear)

Pros:
-Gorgeous cinematography
-Fantastic action sequences
-Interesting dynamic between Kylo and Rey
-Interesting and much needed "end" to the traditional jedi way
-Great acting by Mark, Carrie, and most of the other cast members
-Incredible scene in Snoke's throne room (yes, all of it)
-Kylo is a fascinating villain
-Interesting focus on the "grey" areas between the black and white
-Force ghost Yoda
-Mostly funny humor
-Overall very fun and interesting to watch

Cons:
-Continuity from previous episodes is neglected
-Slightly off-putting meta-narrative about "forgetting the past"
-Luke's character arc is questionable at best
-Snoke is a throwaway villain with no backstory after being built up in Ep. VII
-Captain Phasma is another throwaway villain with a stupid death
-A couple plot-holes (Ex: Luke goes into exile, but they found a map?)
-Many moments that are just strange or written poorly
-Finn and Rose subplot is literally pointless, romance is forced and cringe-worthy
-Finn gets no character development
-The casino subplot could have been avoided if Holdo hadn't been a b**ch to Poe
-Poe came off as an idiot
-Excessive CGI, especially in the casino
-Luke's final battle with Kylo was neat, but overall disappointing

In conclusion, I can safely say that this movie is divisive for fans. While most tend to choose one extreme, I myself am torn. I had fun watching the movie, and am generally interested in the story. That said, I can't ignore the problems like some fans.

The first time I saw the film, I was disappointed - kind of ‘meh’ on it, not as militantly anti-TLJ as many are, but still underwhelmed. A second viewing (this time with a 7 year-old in tow) changed my view somewhat. Here are the positives: it doesn’t go the way you think, the cinematography is amazing, it’s visually arresting (even Snoke looked great, and I’m a real tough sell on pure CGI stuff...I hated Tarkin and young Leia in Rogue One), and there are some really great, iconic moments. Yes, the story may be a little overstuffed with characters and subplots; yeah, definitely some jerking around with the lore, and the tone wobbles a bit in places. But like the Force doesn’t belong to the Jedi, Star Wars doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to my kid now...and he liked it better than TFA. I think anyone saying it’s worse than the prequels is just being hyperbolic. The Phantom Menace I very nearly walked out on, and the subsequent films didn’t improve much upon that piece of bantha poodoo. The Last Jedi is not what critics have made of it, for sure, but nowhere near deserving of 0s and 1s. The truth is, as ever, somewhere in the middle. Expand

I thought this was a good sci-fi fantasy movie, but made for a mediocre Star Wars movie, and it has left me wondering if I even want to remain invested in this new trilogy.

From a regular film standpoint, TLJ should be movie gold: excellent visuals, great casting, and exciting action sequences. But as a Star Wars film, it leaves you with very little to look forward to in Episode 9, offering some extremely disappointing answers to questions raised in last movie, while seemingly also throwing much of what is considered sacred among Star Wars fans out the window.

It should be noted that my only real criticism of TFA was that it didn't offer anything new. TLJ is the exact opposite of that, taking many (perhaps too many) new risks with the story. Unfortunately, few of said risks panned out well in the end. Most notably, the way Rian Johnson treated the character of Luke Skywalker has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.

The first two-thirds of this movie are extremely sluggish, with pretty much nothing happening when the camera is on Ray and Luke. After Ray boards Snoke's ship, the movie really picks up and becomes very interesting and entertaining. The other problem is a REALLY ANNOYING plot thing. When Rose and Finn are about to be executed, the ship blows up. All of the clones around them are either dead or knocked out, and Rose and Finn just get back up and say "I know where a working ship is!" That was really lucky that R and F are okay when everybody else is either knocked out or dead! Another problem is some of the humor was pretty cheap. The acting is pretty good in this movie, and it really built up Kilo Ren's character. He was very well acted in this movie and now one of the most interesting Star Wars characters to me. All in all, the final third of this movie is really great, but the first two-thirds drag for the most part. Expand

Minor improvements in small areas such as further fleshing out Kylo Ren, his relationship with Luke, and his complicated relationship with the dark side. The main two stories being told in this movie are very unsatisfying and sometimes feel like a downright slap in the face to the franchise in general. If you are a Star Wars fan, you will see things that will make you question their motives and direction of the franchise. Still there is some classic Star Wars charm to the movie in areas. Unfortunately those moments are overburdened by bad pacing and lack of focus or connection. There is still good in this film and hopefully they are zeroing in on the magic that made this franchise what it is today. May the Force be with you all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. I liked the character development of some characters like Luke, Kylo, Rey, and Poe. The movie improved in some areas, such as a more original story line, a very engaging space battle, and some cool new landscapes (and seeing more of the island was pretty neat). I did however have my tropes with this movie. Some scenes were just straight up stupid, that being luke milking that weird walrus cow... thing. I get that he's a hunter and a survivor now but that was just a little bit gross. It doesn't even compare to Leia's **** force scene. What? I'm supposed to believe Leia was thrown into the vacuum of space from a missile attack that decimated her room and she was just floating there like "durr but the force"?? Using the force is one thing but I'm pretty sure the force can't stop your eyes and brain from exploding from being exposed to the vacuum of space. Another problems I had with the movie was the pacing. We constantly get thrown back and forth in between this casino, but getting thrown back into the space battle. Or the scenes on the island with luke... but then getting thrown back into the space battle, which doesn't advance at all! Constantly resetting the tension can really take you out of the moment. I was practically begging for the space battle to end because of how much of a drag it was. Another major problem I had was the forced marketing. The porgs were so forced and so obviously a toy to sell for the movie. We get it, they're cute and fluffy and chewie is eating them, but they don't interact with the characters other than to show up on the screen and be cute. Take BB-8 for an example, he was a marketing ploy done right. He interacts with the plot, he interacts with the characters and he has personality.

The final problem I will talk about is probably my biggest problem with the movie... CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! So we finally get to see Snoke, the high and mighty, wise but manipulative Snoke. And we get nothing out of him. Sure we get to see him in person, and in his badass red throne but we get no progression with him because he dies half way through the movie. Which inherently is not a bad thing but we may as well had seen him through the hologram the entire movie and we would have got the same result.

Princess Leia also might as well had been killed off during the space battle scene (No disrespect to Carrie Fisher by any means). Leia did literally nothing after the coma scene. Just thought I'd ramble for a while. I did actually like this movie overall but it could have been a million times better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well you're never going to please everyone! It's Star Wars after all. I can totally understand the negative outrage from fans, but compared to other 'normal' movies this is obviously not a 0/10 movie. There's a lot to like but just as much to absolutely hate. It does feel that Disney have too much sway. The whole Vegas World Alien Horse racing bit with Finn and Rose made me feel how I felt watching Shia LeBeef swinging through the jungle in Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull. It was just awful. I could see people in the cinema looking around uncomfortably at each other wondering what they were watching. It was totally unneeded and seems is only there for Disney to base a ride at one of their theme parks on.

I'm disliking most of the characters. Kylo Ren is the only one that I feel comfortable with on the whole. Although Benecio Del Toro was great, if woefully underused. His character felt authentic and engaging and could've been a great addition to franchise as a new lovable rouge type hero. I was willing him to come join the fight at the end. Rey I can just about get along with, although she's still not great. Po and Finn are just embarrassing and don't feel natural to me, overacted maybe. I wanted Finn to crash into the cannon at the end. He's not a great character. I quite liked Rose but she wasn't really needed. Bombers that drop bombs in space – uh hello gravity in space? There's countless annoyances, plot is full of holes, and it's overlong. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't kinda have fun watching it. But I definitely gave it way more passes because it was Star Wars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I seriously don't understand the bad ratings. My only guess is, that people were expecting the same predictable plot line that almost every hollywood movie follow.
I think TFA was a good movie – but it wasn't very original.

Rian Johnson did the only right thing but delivering a story that brings the franchise forward – and not by repeating it.

We already know the original trilogy, guys – let the past die. kill it if you have to!

It has fun, exciting moments and I found myself genuinely invested when tension rose; however, there are segments in the film that made me say, "Really?" out loud. Each scene has great ideas but when combined together, they make a movie with mixed tones and create pacing issues that negatively impact the humor and emotional connections with the characters. The special effects are great, the main characters undergo some much needed development and the acting is good, but subpar secondary characters, uneven pacing and plot holes make it difficult to care. Overall, Episode VIII is fun to watch but leaves much to be desired. Expand

It is hard going over this film without spoilers. Yes, a few decision they took in the film and some scenes could have been done better. Overall, it is an interesting novel trajectory. I like Laura Dern and Benicio in this film. Finally, great underappreciated actors getting some action.

This is a solid 6/10 film, not without its flaws but with a few interesting surprises. It has good atmosphere and flow. Step in the right direction.

I also don't like how the characters can use the force by projecting themselves to a different location. We never saw this in previous films and it would have solved a lot of problems in those films. Also, Rey became a Jedi Master with hardly any training. On the plus side, the acting and special effects were good throughout. I wish there was some originality but the writers seem to be out of ideas. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It really bothers me that Rian Johnson did to TFA what Luke did to the lightsaber in the beginning: Looked at it and threw it away. I loved TFA and I was excited for the future installments, but upon seeing TLJ twice I really don't think it is as good as it could've been had it built upon TFA. Here are a couple of examples: 1) Rey's parents were built up as this big mystery in TFA, even through-out the first half of this film and they are revealed to be nobody in particular, just some junkheads from Jakku. Excuse me, what? 2) Same with Snoke, who is this mystery villain? He's just randomly killed off by Kylo Ren. Excuse me, what? 3) The ending of TFA was a big cliffhanger, with Rey handing Luke his lightsaber. What happens in TLJ? Luke looks at it and throws it away. Excuse me, WHAT? 4) Rey and Finn build this relationship with each other but in TLJ this is movie they barely share any screentime. 5) I guess Rian Johnson didn't like Kylo Ren's helmet... meh.
Other negative points for me: 1) The middle of the movie is BORING. We cut between Canto Bight and Acht-Tu and nothing really happens. 2) I don't like this version of Luke. It doesn't feel like him at all. Even Mark Hamill said it. 3) While I did enjoy some of the gags, a lot of them felt out of place. Like, they interrupted good action sequences or felt awkwardly placed. What's with Luke milking that space cow? Did we really have to see that? 4) There isn't a single lightsaber duel. We are teased with it but it doesn't happen. 5) Rose? Get out of here...

All in all, I think it boils down to Rian Johnson wanting to subvert expectations: "Ho ho, they'll think this is the big lightsaber duel of the movie, but nooooo", "After all the theorizing they'll never guess Rey's parents were nobody", etc, etc. It's too much and doesn't respect the predecessor. There are a couple of positives: BB-8 - I love this droid so much. I love the final battle and the Throne Room fight, and how about the hyperspeed crash? Wow! Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are awesome. I didn't like Kylo Ren that much in TFA but I thought this movie put him in a new light and I'm excited to see where his character goes from here. Some of the cinematography is breathtaking - this is probably the most beautiful looking Star Wars movie ever. I did like the Porgs, I thought they were very cute. I did get the feeling through-out the movie I didn't know who was gonna survive and that's a rare accomplishment! It did a good job building fear and uncertainty. Here's to hoping JJ can get Part IX and Star Wars back on track. I wonder if he's pissed that so much of his setups and work in VII were completely obliterated in VIII?

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is not as good, or as bad, as it might've been. It's the best Star Wars movie visually. There are several great action sequences. However, there are plenty of problems. It doesn't really feel like a sequel to The Force Awakens. Snoke, who is introudced as a mysterious figure in Force Awakens, is completely wasted. Luke Skywalker, the hero of the original films, is virtually unrecognizable based on his behavior in this movie. Rey, the protagonist, is unrelatable; she's seemingly good at everything. The new characters are shallow and uninteresting (mainly Rose). The flying Leia scene was laughable. There are many more nonsensical plot details in this movie. This movie nearly killed my interest in Star Wars Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a big fan of the star wars movies since early 1980's loved 4,5,6 - odd flicks of humour, awesome villains, loveable heros and great story lines - for me all the same applied with episode 1,2 and 3.
Then out comes the force awakens didn't fill me with excitement but it was obvious star wars was turning a corner and heading in a slightly different direction - I was watching, listening and hoping.....
Now after watching the last Jedi, I can say the film did have it's good moments but did looked slightly rushed and was made by someone who a) Just didn't 'get' star wars or b) was under orders to eliminate certain characters from movie series from a higher (disney) power to make way for new (disney made) characters....What happened to Luke Skywalker is nothing short of a disgrace! Also I don't remember Star Wars having such a weak set of villians - Kylo Ren - fair enough could have potential but NEVER as a leader -General Hux...? very weak when compared to previous like Tarkin and the 'comedy moment' between him and Kylo Ren were cringy... and I realise sometimes change is needed with characters but old characters have made Star Wars what it is today so they must have done something right...where are the bad-ass bounty hunters? where are the sith lords? Get George Lucas involved to sort it out!
I just don't see where they are trying to take Star wars after watching TLJ,but to turn it around for me they will have to surprise us with some epic characters and story lines in any future episodes....

Negatives: Absolutely throws away the legacy of Luke Skywalker and ruins the progression of the force users that was built in the previous 7 films. Fight choreography can be wonky. The sequel trilogy characters (Rey, Finn, Poe and others) either have 0 character development or a character arc that does not fit their roles. Also ruins every potentially good villain in the sequel trilogy (Snoke, Phasma, Knights of Ren, Kylo, Hux). Overall, while the film can be entertaining at times, the film fails to progress character arcs effectively and does not synergize well with any past Star Wars media.

I am not a big fan of the Star Wars (SW) movies.

That’s not to say I don’t find the original SW trilogy fun, but it’s mostly from a visual effects and action standpoint. However, from a storytelling and character perspective; SW was always lacking for me.

These same issues carried over to the J.J. Abrams-directed soft reboot The Force Awakens where despite grade-A action and visuals effects; suffered from an overly-formulaic plot that felt more like a glorified teaser for future movies than a real story. That and the Mary Sue protagonist, a disappointing villain in the form of Kylo Ren, and ANOTHER rehash of the Death Star plot.

I felt very divided as I was watching LJ. Rarely have I watched a movie where moments of sheer awesomeness are intermixed with moments that made me want to smack the upside of my head!

LJ carries over the tradition of the last two SW entries by being some of the most gorgeously executed special effects extravaganzas of the modern age. I also really liked the sequences in which Rey is exploring the Force as well as her own emotional insecurities stemming from her uncertainty to her place in the universe.

I also liked how Johnson gives these sequences a slightly surreal and psychological portrayal, much like how it was in the original trilogy.

There were also admittedly plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout too, in fact, it maybe the funniest SW movie to date.

From a filmmaking and cinematography standpoint, SW has really never looked better!

It’s when we get into discussions about the actual plot and story that LJ causes major disturbances. Johnson is credited as the sole writer and I give him plenty of credit with being bold enough try new things with the Star Wars formula. Johnson is hardly a “safe” filmmaker like J.J. Abrams.

The storyline involving Rey, Luke, and Ren is by far the most interesting stuff.

Luke’s character is taken in a very unexpected direction and Mark Hamill is more than capable of pulling off a more weary, vulnerable, and morally-greyed version of the iconic space hero. Rey still remains over-powered but she did feel less like a Mary Sue this time around due to the focus on her emotional insecurities. That and the fascinating new layer given to the dynamic between Rey and Ren.

Speaking of Ren, I’ve always liked Adam Driver and it was nice to see him being given better material to work with this time around. If Johnson succeeded at anything, it was turning Ren from a overgrown pathetic whiny brat to the complicated lost soul that FA attempted to portray him as but failed. If anything Ren is by far the best character now because he is the only one that goes through any real arc in LJ outside of Luke.

Because outside of the Rey, Luke and Ren storyline; everything else about the plot is an under explained and baffling mess with so-many questionable creative choices.

Like with Alien Covenant, if you are hoping for any answers to the questions posed by FA, then you are going to be severely disappointed.

Instead of being given more backstory that would help contextualize the drama and make us more invested in the plot; signifiant time is wasted following Finn (Boyega) and Rose Tico (Tran) on a planet straight from The Fifth Element in search of a codebreaker that I swear was ENTIRELY POINTLESS!!!

Who is Rose Tico?

Probably the most blatant example of adding an unnecessary character to a movie in a predictable attempt to appeal to Asian markets since Angelababy from Independence Day: Resurgence. It also doesn’t help that Tran is given some of the worst dialogue in the movie.

The First Order also continues it’s tradition of being the most incompetent evil oppressive empire since…well…the Empire. The Resistance also showcases baffling levels of incompetence. While I really enjoy Poe as a character due to Isaac’s effortlessly charismatic portrayal, his continuous unruly attitude and disregard for chain of command severely makes you question the quality of Leia’s judgement.

Laura Dern also randomly shows up in the movie as a supposed “legendary” Resistance leader although with that stupid purple wig she looks more like a hipster college professor if anything. I love Dern but she was simply wasted in this despite having one admittedly awesome scene, a literal non-character.

It’s not like I didn’t have some fun watching LJ, heck I think it is a slight step above FA, but I simply can’t ignore the questionable script on display. I personally can’t understand how anybody, critics or otherwise, can watch this and FA and tell me with a straight face they are examples of quality writing.

It’s far from the worst Star Wars movie, that honor goes to Attack of the Clones and it’s “worse than Twilight” chemistry-free love story between Anakin Skywalker and Padme, but it’s certainly not one of the best.

I liked it, but it seemed small, and slow. The main conflict of the first half of the film was very dull, and most of the movie lacked any urgency.
I really enjoyed some of the twists and character dynamics, and there was one fight scene that was particularly outstanding, but I felt like there was too much fat that needed to be trimmed from the script, and the tone was messy.
I think the biggest problem with this film is that it kept the humor of previous films, like The Force Awakens, but lacked its heart, and its charm. There's also the way Rian Johnson handled Luke in this movie, which I wasn't particularly thrilled with, and one scene with Leia was probably written for Superman or Star-Lord (if you've seen it, you know what I mean).
I'll end on a high note, Kylo Ren. While I'm not the biggest fan of the whiny dark Force user (See Anakin in ep. 2-3), and I initially got the impression that Adam Driver's performance was based solely off of the Tusken Raider massacre and accompanying monologue, he has turned out to be a really interesting character with a gripping screen presence and an epically awesome fighter (Where can I pick myself up a TIE Silencer?). His performance was easily my favorite part of the entire film.
I know what I have to do, but I don't know if I have the strength to do it to my favorite franchise.
This movie was like a soup with a few absolutely outstanding pieces of meat floating in a cold broth of mediocrity. 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, took a bold new direction with many story elements. This was sometimes to it's detriment. Most (if not all) of the story beats that it's predecessor, The Force Awakens, set-up were quickly discarded (Rey's parents being important, Snoke's backstory being integral to the plot, etc). It seems that the intention of these subverted expectations was to tell the audience to forget what they think should happen: don't idolize Luke Skywalker, the force isn't only strong in the Skywalker line. To this effect, I enjoyed how The Last Jedi took old characters whom we love (Han, Luke, and Leia) and told us to let go of what we believe to be true and to make way for the new. I very much enjoyed Luke's wisdom of the force belonging to everyone, not just the Jedi (or the Skywalkers). The trope just seemed overplayed. It was pounded into the viewer's head over and over. "Oh you think this is going to go a certain way? Think again! It's the complete opposite. The Jedi texts don't matter. Luke's father's lightsaber doesn't matter. The subplot on Canto Bight doesn't matter." It all feels like a big troll on the audience. The use of subverted expectations is fine until it gets old. You mean Luke would have no emotional attachment whatsoever to his father's old lightsaber that he lost back in Episode V? It's a hard pill to swallow and the movie doesn't try to help the audience digest it. The worst case of this is the subplot of Finn and Rose and their mission to find a master code-breaker. Not only does the whole Canto Bight scene grind the film to a slog, but the audience is forced to muddle through it just to have the mission end in failure. Moments like these could be handled with more grace instead of leaving the viewer feeling as if the last 45 minutes of the film was wasted time. I did enjoy Poe's story. He was more fleshed out as a character and he was the driving force behind why I cared about what happened to the rebels. (And Leia of course.) I also enjoyed a lot of the things that went contrary to what I expected. I enjoyed seeing the dialogue between Rey and Kylo and how they both were seduced to the "other" side. I liked the fact that Kylo wanted to chart his own path free from past structure, but incidentally falling right into it. I enjoyed the darker themes of the movie over all and the glimmer of hope the audience is left with at the end. This movie is a mixed bag for me. A lot of things didn't work (Finn and Rose aren't being shipped any time soon). It was a fun movie and the over-all point was hit, but the execution was sloppy. This is a fine Star Wars movie, but ranks somewhere in the middle. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star wars: The last Jedi is an interesting film. It has managed to create a divide between those who love it and consider it to be one of the best star wars films to date, others claimed it ruined the Star wars lore, like the Prequels and their midochlorians. It's actually quite impressive if you think about it. I'm closer to the negative side, while acknowledging that the movie has its upsides

Let's start with the positives:
I love the way the new Star Wars movies look. The space battles look phenominal, the lightsaber fights are pleasing to look at, and each of the sets are diverse and distinct from each other in a good way. If Star Wars Episode 4 and 5 had the visuals that 7 and 8 had, it would make the original movies feel more mystical and epic than it already is.
My favorite scenes of the movie are the ones that contained Kylo Ren, or Luke Skywalker. Kylo Ren gave an amazing performance to the point where I felt more connected to Kylo than Rey, and was rooting for him to win. Also, Mark Hamil gave an incredible performance, despite not seeing eye to eye with the character vision of Luke Skywalker.
Finally, the suspense that the movie provides with the relationship between Kylo and Rey was well executed (even though it did have that cringey shirtless moment).

Now for the negatives:
It felt like both sides of the war are ineffective, which is frustrating. Every single action that the resistance tries to accomplish fails in some way, and yet the First Order cannot wipe them out. The Vice Admiral was a horrible replacement for Leia and was not suited for leadership, even though she had fought (and supposedly won) a famous war for the republic. Finn and Rose go on a useless sidequest that takes away from the potential time developing Luke and Rey, and Poe, (the only sensible leader left fighting) was berated multiple times, even though he made tactically advantageous decisions that saved the resistance countless times. Rey is also OP in this movie, same as the last, and that most likely won't change in the 9th movie

The scenes with the resistance fighting (excluding the first one) felt pointless, since it seems that no matter what, the resistance will always end up on top. It is evident that the resistance will end up on top, making seeing the 9th movie pointless.

However, Kylo Ren is the only saving grace we have left. He has potential to give us a deep character arc, exploring what it's like to truly struggle between making good and bad decisions for what he sees as the greater purpose. Rey and the resistance can be used as an outlet for Kylo to truly express himself. If the movie were to primarily focus on him, and actually let him accomplish his goals, I truly believe that this series can be saved from its current boring path.

Overall, I would give this movie a 6/10. The visuals and the tension brought out by amazing performaces by Kylo and Luke were undercut by the boring, tedious plotline of the resistance running away for 2 hours of my time. Kylo's potential throughout the trilogy is the only saving grace that this trilogy has left, and if he dies, the Last of my intrest, will end.

Overall, it can be either as good or as bad as you like depending on what aspects of cinema you value the most.
At the very least I found it entertaining by the end, but it was still a huge disappointment compared to The Force Awakens, which in itself wasn't much to write home about.
It pains me to say this, but The Last Jedi was average, and I'm concerned as to how the final episode might attempt to fix the many holes created by this movie.

There are dumb subplots that should’ve been resolved sooner and even the good parts aren’t all too amazing. The movie should have more like a 70 on Rotten Tomatoes, not a 91, stupid Rotten Tomatoes. The movie nobody online can be civil to each other about. People love it, people hate it, and they think there is no in between. Well, there is. I am mixed with this movie. It has some great moments and it has some terrible moments. For the great, the movie is visually spectacular, exciting, exceptionally acted, well-directed, emotional and has an amazing score from John Williams. Now, for the terrible, the whole scene on Canto Bight with Finn and Rose was dumb and heavy-handed in its political message. Also, as a follow-up to The Force Awakens, a movie I still really like, it felt like Rian was trying to go off a blank slate and disregard everything that happened in that movie. Also, Luke's character was only semi-butchered; thankfully he does have an arch in this movie. But, overall, I am in the middle with this movie. But, that's ok because I have a right to my opinion, which the internet seems to be ignorant to that fact. Please be civil to others' opinions and don't go saying awful things to the actors just because you were dissatisfied with the character they played. That is a **** thing to do. So yeah. I give this movie a solid C+. I don't hate it, but it's not that great either. Expand

Makes me think Disney paid off these critics. The Last Jedi is a very meh kind of Star Wars film. There are a lot o flaws. I respect Rian Johnson's decision to take risks but there are a couple cornerstone pieces with the franchise he tampered with too much. Turning Luke into a hermit was extremely disappointing. He made Luke Skywalker the most beloved hero in Star Wars not likeable in this film and that's an insult. He should have looked at what JJ Abrams did with Han Solo and followed his strategy, to bring back the character and make him feel like the one we all remember. Rose, DJ, and Admiral Holdo's character development is god awful, it's almost as if we are supposed to hate them from the start but instead like them. The Canto Bight scene gets the plot carried away. Leia's drifting through space with the force is very strange. The concept of hyperspacing a ship into Snoke's ship is also not Star Wars. although, this film does have strong moments, the opening scene action is great, Rey and Kylo dueling together in Snoke's chamber, and thr final battle scene at Crait. The ending was good too with everyone reuniting on the millennium falcon. This is probably the best visual start wars movie made too it looks very good. Overall this movie is just okay, the critics are giving this too high of a score and some of the users feelings are a little too hurt about what they did with Luke Skywalker. Not one of the better Star Wars, but I do like it better than episodes 1 and 2 of the prequels because it has more action and feels more like a Star Wars film. Here's to hoping JJ Abrams can finish the sequel trilogy off with a bang with episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The eighth edition to the saga left me wanting. I thought there would be more focus on Rey and Luke's relationship. Not much backstory for Luke other than his failure with Kylo. Still not clear how the images shown in TFA when Rey finds Luke/Anakin's lightsaber coincides with Luke's telling of teaching/failure Ben Solo. Overall a strange twist on hyperspace rules were introduced, expect books and comics to clean that up, as hyperspace kamikaze should be able to eliminate any fleet or death star per TLJ new rules. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My viewing of The Last Jedi was constantly polluted by cringe. It could have been a great movie. Empire was my favorite installment of the Star Wars saga. The second film in a trilogy is where things can get weird and norms can be broken. I can see that this was Johnson's intention, but the film feels cramped and forced. Last Jedi felt like an indie movie stuffed into blockbuster pacing, which just doesn't match up. I enjoyed the subtlety of Ridley's story line, but the moral messaging of the Finn/Rose plot and the Po/Holdo plot were so beat-you-over-the-head straight forward that I had troubles taking them seriously. Besides, I'm not sure I love the message of Holdo. I know that it was meant to read as "trust women," which I will always get behind, but it read more as "blindly follow orders and complacently accept a lack of transparency." It feels so militaristic, running against the pro-democratic messaging of the entire Saga. The dialogue in Star Wars has always been a little odd, but, other than Driver and Ridley, the cast of Last Jedi couldn't pull it off like Fischer, Hamill or Ford. If I ever hear "master codebreaker" again, I will have a psychotic episode. The humor of the movie got laughs from disinterested parents brought to the theater by their kids, but was nothing more than cringey gags. I missed the sarcasm and blissful camp of the original trilogy. Expand

ItHaving rewatched the entire saga recently, this "The Last Jedi"'s viewing was better than its first at the pictures, strangely enough. It has the best cinematography of its trilogy - by far!, and delves into some darker themes as well. It was refreshing to see 'real' peril and not having a typical space battle resolve all problems. The humor works 4x out of 10 for me, so I guess that's not too bad for a contemporay Disney film... Some 'unpredictable' moments really felt original and in some cases - I thought were - exhilirating. Here also lie some of the best moments that COULD HAVE BEEN in the Star Wars saga. However, these 'unpredictable' moments are, ultimately, also its biggest let-down. At a certain point, it just tries WAY too much and just feels boring, cheesy and monotenous. All these moments are given more importance than the characters, so by the end, I just stopped caring really. It undermines its own storyline. The whole Finn plot was totally useless and you really feel it with its 2h30 run time. I, personally, think its the best of its trilogy as it felt original and - somehow - that's what this trilogy lacked the most. Expand

Star Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel DisneyStar Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel Disney movies are not movies. They are festivals. They celebrate diversity. And the worst part is that Disney, the religion which is celebrating this festival, doesn't take very kindly of the "infidels". As a result they are more concerned about the movie doing good in China and Africa than actually telling a good story. They can imagine little girls from Middle East play with Rey Palpatine dolls and porg/fathier stuffed toys, but not giving the fans what they have been asking for all these years.
One thing I really like about this movie is that it is able to deliver the needed impact using its CGI. The way they used the FTL to tear right across the enemy ships was so cool. But yeah, that's the only one thing I like about the movie. To show that one scene they ruined the whole concept of FTL travelling. Luke Skywalker lives between adorable Porgs, but he's only Luke Skywalker for the namesake. He doesn't do anything that makes us feel that he's important to the story. Heck, literally his role in the movie is that he dies!
This is exactly what's wrong with movies today. First they take a popular franchise that doesn't make movies anymore, or has a lot of books/games/TV shows. Then they get the fans hyped to make them realise they are about to make something big for them. In order to do this they sell their merchandise because they know the gullible fans will be absolutely ready to lap it all up. After that they will throw in some secularism - make a white protagonist, a black sidekick, an Asian man/woman who will help them, someone who is being oppressed because there's absolutely no other way a hero can be a hero if he doesn't speak for someone's rights. An important character should also be there who will do nothing other than fan service. An absolutely meaningless plot twist will also do some good. With all that done, just add a big CGI fight and get over with it.
So in conclusion, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is not a movie. It's a fan service. This wouldn't have been a problem if it DID fan service and not become one. We had watched this movie for a plot about Jedi fighting the Sith, not for seeing Finn free some fathiers. The movie is set a long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. So all this SJW stuff doesn't make any sense.

There is a sense of not caring during this first bit of the film where both the character interactions and plot delivery are performed in a lazy, sometimes disgraceful, manner. Thankfully, it's a huge relief that two thirds of the film deliver what needed to be delivered from the continuing, beloved franchise: familiar faces, action, unpredictable plot twists, exploitation of character strengths and weaknesses, and even moments that will quicken your pulse and make you sit at the edge of your seat. The film performs just well enough for us to wait in anticipation for the next episode. Overall, "The Last Jedi" is a solid entry and nothing more. A much farther attempt than Force Awakens attempted to conjure. Rian johnson does spend too much time with the resistance, and makes it a very throttled, back-n-forth film that never really allows you to connect or hone in to something particular. It wants to do so much. And to its quality, has great effect. But the storytelling became a bit of a juggle-act. On a space odyssey level, it delivers. But as a story following up a very teasing, simple first instalment, Last Jedi does too much and leaves little to look forward to. My complaints are simple, the storytelling wasn't honed in. Instead of making us feel through the trauma, tension of what was going on. Things just happened for thunderous cinematic effect, which they do. But as a whole, you walk away from Last Jedi more throttled than engrossed. And wishing it conveyed its ideas better, in a more honed-in way. As epic as it comes off, was it necessary? While we're left with shame and consequence. Expand
