This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a bit very torn in my review. I will say I knew going in that Disney is unfortunately obsessed with promoting its left leaning SJW politics into its movies. I would highly suggest they refrain from doing this as it’s extremely distracting while watching the movie to be patronized. It’s like they think we are dumb and don’t realize what they are doing. That said, it was extremely entertaining in parts. Overall, I was entertained, and I tried my best to just roll my eyes at some of its ridiculousness. If Disney wants to make a movie about why you shouldn’t go to war, don’t you think it’s a bit odd to do it in a movie that is glorifying explosions and conflict in slow motion? Lol. Make a separate movie about that please. Shove it full of your politics, just please for the love of God and for everything that is decent in the world, I beg you to leave it out of our Star Wars films. What I liked:
Greatly entertaining opening sequence. Cool scenes with Snoke, but only two…
Fight scene with the imperial samurai looking guards
Luke’s scene at the end, very emotionally satisfying

What I loathed/hated:
Leia flying, WTH? What were you smoking Mr. Johnson?(LAME)Just have her get injured but doesn't die. Rose and her SJW warrior babble, Johnson managed to create a character more annoying that Jar Jar Binks(LAME). Her sister seemed way better for the 15 seconds of screen time. Lora Dern’s Purple hair. WTH? Is this the Hunger Games? Really distracting
Luke being a curmudgeon(LAME). Seriously, Rey hands him his first lightsabre he was holding when his hand got chopped off by his dad. I don’t think he would throw it. It would have been so much better if he wanted to train Rey, but she doesn’t want to for some reason. I would have preferred him to be a more valiant character like Ben Kenobi.
Snoke getting killed with no backstory.(LAME)
Captain Phasma appearing to get killed (Lame)
Kamakaze pilot Dern (LAME). Why didn’t all he other ships do this first? Speeches about evil arms dealers by Rose and Benicio Del Toro(SOOO LAME)
Whole CANTO BLIGHT SUB-PLOT (LAME)
Whole premise about can’t catch one space cruiser running out of fuel? (LAME)
Clone copy of scenes elements from Original trilogy. (BB-8 popping out of an AT ST like Chewbacca), (Hoth like Trench with resistance fighters and encroaching AT AT’s), Benicio Del Toro double cross, just like Lando in Empire. (ALL LAME) I didn’t like Abram’s TFA very much and I don’t care much for the Finn, Rey, Poe or Ren, as they are not very likeable. So not really looking forward to Episode IX, Abrams gave Johnson an easy slam dunk and Johnson his handing him back a deflated limp pile of Dooku.

Positives: Good effects and acting. Hamill, Driver and Ridley go all out here.
Negatives: Dumb plot(s), bad story arc (no real tension built up to a timely climax). The First Order General and Captain Phasma are totally pointless here.

Negatives: Dumb plot(s), bad story arc (no real tension built up to a timely climax). The First Order General and Captain Phasma are totally pointless here. Although George Lucas often wrote painful scripts and chose dud actors at least he was a master editor who could deliver a well paced movie. Not so in TLJ. And its over 2 hours!!!! Other: There’s humour but its the mumblecore variety, nothing quote worthy. The great comic relief duo of C3PO and R2D2 is totally absent here - they are the best characters that Lucas copied from Kurosawa.

All of this dropped into weird sauce of plot holes, lack of logic, hollow secondary characters, and some bad visual design choices, disrespecting established legacy.

4 points. Because of the sentiment only.

There's a reason the audienceThis review contains spoilers… It's almost impossible to know where to begin critiquing this film. TLJ is a film with so much promise but falls flat like Snokes corpse and the underused character development. There's a reason the audience score is the lowest of any Star Wars film. And like many, I hated almost every major plot decision in it.

TLJ is a beautifully shot, well directed, well acted, terribly written mess-of-a-film bristling with oddly placed Marvel-esque meta-quips, bizarre shifts in narrative tone, dull side-plots filled with Harry Potter-esque CGI creatures/fauna that are completely inconsequentia; that ultimately offers no logical character development and impacts the story in no way at all. You can say what you will about the prequels falling victim to cheesey dialogue and casting missteps but, and I HATE myself for even thinking this, they pale in comparison to the 2.5 hours of boring, disposable ‘busy-work’ the majority of these characters are given. Johnson clearly only has an interest in exploring Rey and Kylo’s characters as everyone else is basically going in circles and under-developed. On top of this the most insulting thing I felt as a viewer is that TLJ systematically deconstructs and undoes all that was set up before which has led some to exclaim how TLJ ‘bravely makes choices and gives you something you weren’t anticipating'… but actually it insults you for even caring about anything Abrams and Kasdan set up in TFA by not answering anything at all. TLJ is a film that blasts away the mystery and awe left by its predecessor, and shows its loyal, theory-obsessed audience that nothing is going to be linked to what they thought in ways akin to how the writers of LOST treated their viewers. Instead of leaving you with wonder about how this trilogy will continue, you’ll be left wondering what you’re meant to be wondering about with the future of the films.

Let me explain, if you want to kill off Snoke then do it, but don't make it a cheap death. Snoke hasn’t been developed enough to understand why it is meaningful, or not meaningful, when he dies to Kylo Ren; let alone me. If Rey is a child of nobodies, then make it meaningful why her lack of knowledge of her parents is in itself meaningful and important. Show us, or at least tell us, but don’t cop out completely with nothing to fill the cop out. Iif you’re going to 'completely flip the genre on its head' then don’t fill the film with constant ‘is he dead’, ‘no he isn’t’… ‘oh but now he is’ misdirection and psyche-outs. Even Finn, on his redundant side-mission, looked like he was going to die 3 separate times. One by execution, but then he doesn’t, then Phasma may have killed him, but then he returns, and then he tries to sacrifice himself by taking out the final super-weapon, but then he doesn’t… this rollercoaster was both taxing and infuriating; especially when this ‘fake-out/psyche' happens repeatedly to Luke, Rey, Finn, Leia and even Rose! Add on the rip-off chase plot from Battlestar Galactica and repeat the same scenario of Rebels need to take on a super-weapon 3 separate times (a dreadnought, a ship with tracking abilities, and a Death Star mini super-weapon and failing each time) and you’re left feeling really drained. Most of all this is a film, that disrespects Luke Skywalker character, one of my all time film idols, someone we saw briefly in TFA but I/we ultimately haven’t seen on screen for 35 years, by insufficiently explaining why he is the way he is and completely mischaracterising what we do see of him. For example, Luke refused to fight Darth Vader because he felt the conflict and good within him… yet he senses a conflict in his own nephew and for ‘reasons the script needs to happen’ Luke decides to murder him IN HIS SLEEP? Sure this sets up Kylo’s path and explains Luke’s guilt, but what led him to this point?!? What happened to Luke? Now he is just a grumpy, cowardly old man? The hero is gone???? What? Why? He doesn’t want to be found, but he leaves the galaxy a mysterious map so people can find him? What? Why?

Never ONCE in a trilogy that was had the opportunity to resolve the story arcs of our favorite heros did we even get Han, Leia, Luke, and Chewy in the same room! Now the actors who are alive have dead characters, and the character left alive belongs to a dead actress! All I can say is, JJ, I would like to think this was not your intended storyline from the beginning. I would like to think that Rian Johnson attempted to blindside our expectations but in doing so he simply betrayed the potential growth the new characters. Seeing as each writer and director seems to have a blank slate as they start each film, with the freedom to take things in any direction they want, combined with the similar amount of outrage this film is getting from divided fans, I can see Episode IX spending most of its runtime undoing everything TLJ deconstructs!

The feminist undertones were there, and is Star Wars better for it - a resounding NO. The "humor" fell flat. It's also way too long. I was going for the Empire, ahhh I mean First order, by the end. The only good thing about The last jedi will be the Plinkett review.

FYI. Bombs are only applicable when there's gravity.

Update: After letting The last jedi sink in, a few things have become apparent. First, as a stand alone film, The last jedi isn't terrible, but as a follow up to The force awakens, it is garbage. I can see why Star wars fans hated it. Rian Johnson (the writer/director) basically flipped off every Star wars fan out there. He took a huge dump on everything that was set up in The force awakens. Who was Snoke, who are Rei's parents? Such potential for story development was wasted. The last jedi should be struck from the record and they should try again with Star wars 8.1. I seriously doubt any degree of course correction in Star wars 9 could make up for The last jedi. BTW. Disney, good luck selling toys for whiny emasculated male characters and irritating SJW/feminism-driven female characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some nice things in this movie, but also a lot of bad with that. The Rose/Finn side-story was kind of annoying and didn't really fit into the movie. Too much time was spent on their little trip. Every character just seemed to be off in their own-subplot for most of the film, and a great lack of character development didn't help. I never got emotionally invested in any of the characters. Luke Skywalker was poorly written, and very contradictory to his strength in the original trilogy. Kylo Ren continued to be a poor character, which is a shame as Adam Driver is a very good actor. He is very conflicted between light and dark, and comes across as very weak, and changing his allegiance numerous times during the movie. The scene with killing Snoke was also ridiculous, and Snoke didn't realize his anger was directed at him? Too many themes were just rehashed from the original trilogy, and I was hoping that after The Force Awakens was a nostalgia trip they would have written this movie to be more of it's own, but still too much just copies the themes of the original trilogy. It also went a little overboard with the kid-friendly nature, which begun with the prequels when Disney bought the rights. The balance with humor and seriousness was much better in the original trilogy.

Overall, it was enjoyable, but die-hard Star Wars fans will be disappointed seeing their favorite characters so poorly written.

LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm not sure what professional reviewers are doing. An 86 average? I don't think so. This is probably the blandest Star Wars movie to date, including the prequels (though the prequels have other problems). Even with The Force Awakens rehashing old ground, it still managed to establish the characters in interesting ways and lead us on some interesting plot lines with character progression, some decent acting and great cinematography.

But The Last Jedi had little of that. Honestly, I found it to be a bit of a mess, with poor acting and direction (which is alarming because I think Disney has said they'll be giving this director his own Star Wars trilogy!). The whole premise of the movie was kind of dumb and when I realized that's what the whole movie was going to be about, I was dumbfounded. The plot is next to MEANINGLESS. This movie goes no where! Little story progression, even less character development.

The two new main characters have little of interest in their personalities and back story, and one does something monumentally stupid that would normally make no sense, but which is shoe-horned in by a crappy writer. And I find Leia's literal force armor more ridiculous than all the plot holes in The Force Awakens. Oh man that scene was bad (you'll know it when you see it!).

I was really disappointed in the Finn/Rose/BB8 plot line. BB8 was charming in TFA, but here his antics are old and slightly ridiculous (guess that fits with the rest of the movie). Again Phasma is sadly reduced to a minuscule role. It's also laughably unfortunate that it takes them to an actual casino where all the greedy gather, considering EA's BattleFront II fiasco! Sadly, they rely heavily on nostalgia again...it's way worse than TFA. There are so many lines ripped straight from the original three movies. And while they don't rehash The Empire Strikes Back the way TFA rehashed the original, it still gives off some uncomfortably similar vibes in the closing act. Rogue One did nostalgia right without being shackled to the past films; obviously no lessons were learned.

The Porgs are an obvious marketing gimmick in an attempt to cash in on the baby Groot thing. At least they did provide most of the good comedy in the movie. Most of the other attempts at humor were cringey one-liners.

I simply didn't feel any tension in this movie, despite the peril the Resistance was in. I didn't care about it or the characters. It's like all the interesting arcs established in the first movie fell flat on their faces. Luke/Rey were disappointing. Kylo/Snoke were disappointing. Finn/Poe bromance didn't happen. Chewbacca was barely in the movie, and is sorely lacking for want of Han.

Oh man, I'm kind of crushed. I had high hopes after TFA did a reasonably good job of setting things up and Rogue One was surprisingly good. Now I just feel empty.

All in all, I'd rank the Star Wars movies as follows:

1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) Rogue One
3) A New Hope
4) Return of the Jedi
5) The Force Awakens
6) Revenge of the Sith
=====Big Gap Here=====
7) The Phantom Menace
8) Attack of the Clones
9) The Last Jedi

Don't believe the hype or in the force anymore!

*note: My review of "The Force Awakens" would be downgraded to a 5 or 6 as it does not hold up well and predictably will fare even worse in the long run.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really really really want to like this film, and I have tried, but I just can't. It is a very well polished turd, the core story of the film is just so incredibly stupid. It kind of gives me the same type of feeling that Mass Effect 3 left me with. A form of emptiness. It was the first time I left the cinema after a Star Wars film and just felt zero excitement. Initially the movie was a 7/10 for me but the more I thought about it the more all the flaws got stacked up. For me The Last Jedi is a 4/10. It gets plus points for its beautiful cinematography, great acting from the main actors and by just being Star Wars. I like the way they killed Snoke and that Kylo did it, but it happened too soon and we got ZERO **** INFO ABOUT HIM. Instead of the stupid Finn and Rose storyline they could have given us backstory to Snoke before killing him and actually have Rey trained by Luke on that **** island.

But it was so damn disappointing in so many ways, it felt like every time a key plotpoint was going to be answered and an "expected" conclusion could come, they went a whole other crazy non-logical direction just to prove a point. There were so many opportunities they could make a cool ass story out of this, but instead it gave us the most boring conclusion possible. Very sad about this film, it has literally left me emotionally scarred.

Also, that milk scene.

It has always been a part ofOK before I start, I have been a Star Wars fan since 1994 when I first watched it as a 6 year old child, with my father in Buenos Aires (Spanish dub) and then in English when I moved to the UK a few years later. It has always been a part of my life, through sickness, health, sunshine and rain. I was diagnosed when I was young with a serious personality disorder. I saw councilor after councilor and eventually nothing helped except sitting down and watching my favorite movies (and RPG games but that's not why I'm here). I loved the Force Awakens and Rogue One, I even didn't mind the prequel trilogy, OK granted I and II weren't that good but I enjoyed Return of the Sith and I at least wanted to know what happened next in I and II. My point being there hasn't been a single Star Wars film that I have truly disliked, if anything I may well owe to it my life. No exaggeration.

With this in mind I do not want to speak negatively of a franchise that means so much to me BUT: (and this is a big but, and I cannot lie) The Last Jedi is, IN MY OPINION, a bad film. Hell it may even be a bad film objectively. I'll start with the pacing issues; this is how the last Jedi plays out, "hey you like the first scene from a New Hope when the star destroyer's chasing the Tantive IV? Yes? Of course you do its a great scene! How would you like that scene to run for THE ENTIRE MOVIE? Not so much? Oh, tough your getting it anyway and we'll throw in random bits of Empire as well but we'll still say it breaks new boundaries. Also while this, seemingly decade-long, Space chase is going on we'll cram in the rest of the movie." It was a mess and no amount of space combat, breathtaking as it was, was going to distract me from it. I mentioned the "bits of Empire" there were many moments when I found comparisons. I don't, initially, have a problem with similarities, I loved TFA, but when every reviewer is saying its innovative and fresh I feel ripped off. Not so much by Disney on this aspect but by the journalists that misled me. Thank God for user scores. One more thing about the truly awful, giant chase scene; its a small thing but there's a moment when one of the nameless Imperial generals says "they are lighter and faster than us" um... they are in Space, weight's not an issue.

It wasn't all bad of course. There were elements that were great, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were fantastic and actually gave me a sense of national pride (I'm British). Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio DelToro were very good too. A breath of fresh air. It looked great, the fight scenes were ace and what it got right, it nailed. It's a shame to see Rian Johnson fail as I really enjoy his previous work (Looper was so good). "So, nameless, gender-less internet user of unknown sexual identity, it doesn't sound all that bad why such a low score?" I hear you ask, well if your still with me I'll explain in the next paragraph.

The worst and frankly most unforgivable thing about the last Jedi, for me, was the handling of the late, great Carrie Fisher. As a life-long advocate of mental health awareness she was an inspiration to me for more reasons than just being Leia. I don't care who's "creative decision" it was to essentially ignore the fact that an international icon has passed away, the fact is it genuinely upset me. I tried to watch it for the second time yesterday and walked out as soon as they destroyed the bridge and she floated off with all the dignity of a condom in a river. 15 minutes and I was done. It was a huge kick in the teeth. I could have forgiven the unexplained, survive in spaceness of the initial "death" scene if they'd had the decency and the guts to give her a proper send off later in the film. They had several perfect opportunities, not least of all when the rebel cruiser hyperdrived through the other imperial ship. That was potentially the big redeemer. It was a great scene. Instead of using that other general (who was so forgettable I can't remember her name) why on Earth (or Alderaan) didn't they let the aging Princess make one final, valiant sacrifice to save what she loves? I would have cried like a baby right there in the cinema for all the right reasons instead of quietly crying to myself after being let down so hard. This would of also made that forgettable rebel general lady much more of an interesting character going forward. Speaking of going forward, as Disney have stated (loudly) there will be no CGI Leia, the only alternative is to just write her out like she's nothing. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

So there it is, this is my first review anywhere so I'm sorry if it was long but I had to get this out of my head. To summarize; Star Wars the Last Jedi had infinite potential after TFA but it was very much let down by terrible pacing and incredibly insensitive handling of a subject that's very important to a lot of people. There were some gaping plot holes on top, meaning I've lost all interest in IX as well. Such a shame.

Kylo being shirtless, eww, not sexy at all. Rey didn't really do anything. Seem like the Dark side won, the Light side just running away, should have listened to Poe Dameron. But I was wrong. Despite not being a horrible movie, the last jedi is a remix of episodes IV, V and VI and an adittion of some plots with no interests in order to extend the long duration of the film (for example, Finn is a character with no importance in this new trilogy who cries out for dying and disappearing forever of star wars universe, and Poe is a cheap copy of Han Solo). The quality of the villains are totally missed (Kylo improves in relation with the episode VII, but he still has not explode), the script is quite simple (focused on kids and young people), and only the old guard (Luke and Leia) and a good Rey, try to rescue a film that kids and people who is not fan of the saga will enjoy too much, but an important percent of the real fans of the original episodes of star wars will be disappointed after watching it.
"These aren´t the droids you´re looking for", said Kenobi. And these aren´t the star wars films we´re looking for, Disney. I say.

Also the twist of not knowing what is going to happen is nice. The bad is that there are so many plot holes and inconsistency that it kinda makes it hard to like the movie. You leave the movie theather not feeling great, because there was no real point or indication on what will happen in the next movie. It is also like X-men 3 where they kill off a whole bunch of characters, so rather than to build upon the movie seems like it try to breakdown everything worked in the previous movie. Also the plot holes mess with your brain so it hard to believe that the concurrent scene is plausible. You also kinda start hating the heros, because they makes things worse than better.

After thinking about it, this is not a film for people wanting hope or wanting logic. It based on a writer hubris, who believes it is his job to antagonize fans and take away what they like about star wars. I find that has what cause fans to be upset because in a way it betray their zealots over their idea of what star wars is. This further complicates things as Rian is only the writer of one star wars and abbrams it taking back the mantle. This is the mad scientist working on the ip without care for the effects. It is the Batman & Robin of Star Wars pretty much.

The Last Jedi is a strange creature. I didn't hate the movie, but there were a lot of moments where I didn't enjoy it very much.

The movied felt like it was focused on too many things at once. It kept shifting from scene to scene, distracting itself the entire way. I didn't have an issue with the comedy elements, if it made me laugh, then it did it's intended job. And the comedy made me laugh more than a few times.

The fight scenes were great too and for a PG-13 film, they managed to do a great job with the violence. Cutting people in half, grinding them to pieces, slashing their faces off with lightsabers, that was pretty amazing.

Disney has been focused on killing off all the original characters and I really disliked that. Characters like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are reasons why I wanted new films to begin with. But it appears Disney has been systematically killing off these beloved icons.

Further, the whole scene where Leia survives a exposion and uses the force to survive the vaccume of space and fly back into a space ship was just completely absurd. Whoever thought that up should be fired. I may be done with the new Star Wars film(s) at this point.

I'm still at a 6 because of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Chewbacca/R2 all being in it and they did some nice references to Rogue One with calling the ship the Raddus and how the first order can track through lightspeed in the first place!

A lot of people have ripped this movie/Johnson to shreds and he deserves it, I just don't know how JJ can recover from this! Who the hell is in the first order any more? There's some theorys going around that Snoke isn't really dead and I almost believe them just from a numbers standpoint. Who else is there?! A beatable Kylo Ren...Hux is worthless and the stormtroopers who killed NO ONE in this movie. BB8 killed 5 of them by hijacking an Atst..it's liked watching Season 4 of Rebels (so far)! Just have the good guys win 99% of the battles! SCREW THAT. It's a WAR

Anyways, as routine as Force Awakens was..he set up Rian Johnson pretty well. You can see who the Knights of Ren are, why Kylo turned on Luke..do whatever the hell you want with Rey, Luke, Finn, Phasma, Leia, Snoke etc and then he does this?

Do they have some rivalry going on behind the scenes?

Did he not like some seasons of Lost or did JJ not like Looper?!

This almost looks like a parody/grudge!

Nice freaking use of PHASMA/ACKBAR, btw! Give them no glory..no defining moment...GREAT DECISION.

There's been some conspiracy going around saying that bots hijacked rottentomatoes and gave Last Jedi a 53 (from the fans). Man, you're looking it the wrong way..how in the HELL did it get a 92% from the critics! Of course, IGN gave it a 97..but they might give the worst movie ever a 75! Have they reviewed Major League 3 yet?

Anyways, I loved Rogue One and I know Ron Howard won't screw up Solo and am glad Johnson has NOTHING to do with the Obi Wan movie!

Last Jedi = LAST PLACE. Attack of the Clone is 10 times the movie this was!

P.S. Watch Clone Wars! Everyone who doesn't is doing a DISSERVICE to themselves!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have mixed feelings and am not sure I liked it. I didn’t go away thinking, wow I want to own this movie. I likely won’t purchase it. I was disappointed with what they did with Luke. Mark Hamill did a great job with what he was given. The Finn and Rose plot line was a waste and felt forced. The kiss was stupid. The humor was oddly placed and very “Disney like”. I’m worried for whats next. I liked Rogue One much better than this. I hope they do better on the next one, but I wasn’t all that impressed with Force awakens either. So what hope can I have? Oh well... Expand

However the story is a mix of uninspired and boring. Neither of which are even remotely good.
Narrative-
The narrative of this movie is the same as episode 5. Just as how episode 7 was like episode 4. A new Jedi goes to another planet to learn from a master to become stronger with the force, then they leave to go help their friends. That is the narrative of episode 5 and 8. If you spend a while looking into it you will only find more parallels. In fact the only significant change to narrative is the casino storyline, (which I won't spoil) which sucks. It tries to make you care about characters you just really don't and it amounts to nothing. This could be a normal length, not original but enjoyable still movie, however the casino just seems like they had to do something with John Boyega to remind you his character still existed. It is bad on that front. Visuals-
This movie has my favourite visual aesthetics of a Star Wars movie to date. The planet, Crait, at the end is just awesome. Its like a huge salt flat with red dust under the surface, making a stunning visual filled with contrast of colours. Also the casino is very interesting looking, despite being useless.
Audio-
Its Star Wars audio. Its pretty cool.

To finish this review, I have to disclose that I'm not the biggest fan of the series. I have no investment into this series particularly like so many others do so thats why I can excuse some of the things like how they use Luke Skywalker as a character. However the story is just not good for a movie that should be this epic. In fact the only way I could tell that this movie was epic was from its visuals which were spectacular. However I still wouldn't go to see it again, or recommend it to non-fans of the series. It has positives but it is still a below average film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a Star Wars fan, I really wanted to like this movie. But I didn't. While it has its moments, it's far from the quality film we deserve. I have always maintained that I love all Star Wars movies equally and think they all deserve a place in the series. I love the original trilogy, I love the prequels, and I even really loved The Force Awakens. Which is why this movie was such a disappointment.

This movie doesn't "feel" like Star Wars. Rogue One didn't really "feel" like Star Wars either, but in a different way. Rogue One was different, but still good. The Last Jedi feels like a high-quality Star Wars fan fiction that the interns drafted up while all the talented Star Wars writers were out to lunch. From the very outset, we're given an opener with tons of cheese that I guess was supposed to make the kids laugh because Disney mandated it. And the entire film is full of forced one-liners and humor that falls flat. Then there's Kathleen Kennedy's lovely forced diversity. Every character in the Resistance is either a woman, a racial minority, or often both. Laura Dern plays an unlikable moron with purple hair and Rose Tico is completely unnecessary to the film. One of the characters even has an annoying speech impediment.

Nobody cares about this kind of stuff in movies, and it's especially annoying considering it came at the cost of quality. Speaking of which, this movie is all over the place. There are a handful of good scenes and not much else. I forgave Rey's effortless use of the Force in Episode VII because it had just awakened in her and was so powerful, even Snoke felt it. But Rey doesn't even have much of a personality in TLJ and overcomes every dumb obstacle with minimal effort. Speaking of Snoke, he's not a mysterious dark presence anymore, he's a wrinkled old man in a hideous bathrobe who dies like a b**** and we don't learn anything meaningful about him before he does. The entire casino planet part was entirely unnecessary and reeks of the writers desperately wanting to have another eye-popping cantina scene like the last movie. Rose whines to Finn about child slavery so they save a bunch of animals and then leave the kids behind to stay as slaves for some reason.

Captain Phasma reveals she's not dead and approximately 3 minutes later, she's effortlessly cut down by Finn the janitor in hand-to-hand combat. Chewie is just kind of there the whole movie and never does anything. Luke is all sad because he failed as a Jedi and acts like a whiny jerk for most of the movie instead of the powerful Jedi he supposedly is. There's an absolutely horrendous scene where Leia gets sucked into space and magically flies back into the ship with the Force with absolutely no explanation as to how or why. You might as well have just shown her in space then blacked out the screen with the words "plot device" on it, then cut to Leia safe inside the ship because it would have had the exact same effect on me.

Then at the end, there's a generic recreation of the Battle of Hoth that I couldn't be bothered to care about. Also, for the entirety of the film, Kylo Ren is still an edgy, angry crybaby. Every line of dialogue in this film feels like it was written by freshman drama students and character development is completely nonexistent aside from Luke's change of heart and admittedly cool showdown with Kylo Ren, which aside from the throne room fight was the only part of this movie I actually enjoyed. The Last Jedi is an absolute mess and it certainly isn't a Star Wars movie, whatever it may be. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I liked The Force Awakens. But this movie dashes any interest or development episode VII created for the Star Wars saga. I honestly have no interest in seeing where the story goes from here because the journey up to this point was so absurd and poorly executed. I'd honestly be satisfied if JJ Abrams revealed in Episode IX that everything that happened in TLJ was just Finn's fever dream while he was knocked out by Kylo Ren in Episode VII or something and then pick up from where TFA left off and actually stick to Abrams's original ideas.

I'm not in the category of people who think this movie is the worst film ever made and it wasn't quite as bad as I assumed it would be. But I felt lukewarm about it as I watched it and the more I marinate over it, the less appealing it becomes. I had the same experience with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And that's what this film is isn't it? It's the Crystal Skull of Star Wars. Let's forget it ever happened and never speak of it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quite enjoyed this movie, the space battles and many twists and turns, etc. However I kind of agree with a lot of the haters. Luke Skywalker is not the same character we grew to follow in the original films and I completely understand Mark Hamill's disappointment about how was written. I can't equate the daydreaming farmboy from Tattooine with a grumpy old man living on a rock in the middle of nowhere. The Leia spacewalk drew groans from the audience, as did the cow-milking scene. Snoke was killed cheaply before we even knew anything about him, as was Phasma. The resistance is basically dead now; the 30 surviving people on the millenium falcon with no military hardware are not anything you would call a threat worth bothering about, so the first order have already won. There seemed to be a lot of diversity box-ticking with regard to the casting (in real life the resistance would be like any military organisation in history - young men going off to fight given orders by old men). I also found it noticeable that the first order was all caucasian, in stark contrast to the much more diverse resistance. I wonder what the reaction would have been if this had been the other way round. There were lots of plots holes. Overall I enjoyed waiting to see what would happen, the set pieces were very well done as were the effects. I feel kylo ren and rey's character's were progressed well, if nobody else. I don't think it's the movie it could, and indeed, should have been considering it was Luke's finale, Han Solo is already dead and Carrie Fisher has sadly passed on. Just feel they deserved something better than this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came out of Star Wars The Last Jedi full of excitement and joy, but the more I sit and think about it the more I feel robbed. The trailers for The Last Jedi were promising a dark dramatic film where Luke Skywalker is broken and conflicted with himself and on the verge of insanity, Rey is shown asking Kylo Ren to show her her place in this world taking his hand in the First Order...NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. Instead, the film begins like a Saturday morning cartoon where General Hux(who was an intimidating and powerful character in The Force Awakens)is receiving crank calls from Poe Dameron(who also is very different in this film). The main plot pretty much consists of the slowest high speed chase in film history between The Resistance and The First Order, which is very disappointing because Rey and Luke’s arc which is what the film is named after is taking a backseat to a space janitor(Finn)and a maintenance worker(Rose)flying around the galaxy with some dude named “DJ” trying to destroy a tracker. REALLY??? Throughout the first and second act Rey is attempting to get Luke to return and help the Resistance “Light The Spark That Will Burn The First Order Down” and also trying to figure out who her parents are on the side. This arc was very important in The Force Awakens and is literally thrown down the drain with Rey admitting that she knew who her parents were the whole time. Drunks. WHY??? If the Star Wars Saga is supposed to focus on The Skywalker Family then why is Rey so heavily focused on? She even goes so far as to fall in some pointless “Darkside Pit” and have some trippy dream, all to add up to nothing. Most of the characters in The Last Jedi are treated very poorly with a few exceptions. Snoke, who was another character who was built up so much in The Force Awakens is easily killed by Kylo Ren when he is teased to turn to the light, which was also for nothing rendering Snoke’s death pointless. Poe Dameron is perceived as some dimwitted “Blow Everything Up Pilot”, who disobeys even the simplest direct orders. Carrie Fisher(RIP)does a terrible job as Admiral Leia, delivering her lines like a robot. Not to mention that she's not dead? Are they just going to have a CGI Leia for the entirety of Episode Nine? The film is also way too crowded, Maz Kanata shows up for 30 seconds and has no purpose whatsoever. Yoda shows up as a force ghost to try and get Lukes head back in the game, at first I was blown away with surprise and happiness to see them using the original puppet, but now I realize that there was again literally no point of his cameo because Luke doesn't listen to him anyway. Captain Phasma is heavily advertised in the trailers and merchandise and is killed off less than 5 minutes into her appearance. The moments in this film that were full of potential and promise were quickly shot down with unneeded puns and goofs, Luke tickles Rey with a leaf telling her The Force is trying to connect with her, Kylo Ren tries to persuade Rey with his abs and every time there is a cool moment a Porg appears out of nowhere and does something stupid usually with slapstick comedy. Sadly, there are little to no action sequences in this film and literally not one, NOT ONE lightsaber duel. And of course the film builds one up, teases it and you guessed it; doesn't deliver. Not only does it not deliver, it gives the film an excuse to needlessly kill off Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, The Last Jedi isn't all bad, the cinematography is amazing and Rian Johnson delivers some stunning visuals. There is a JAW-DROPPING flashback with an Evil Luke Skywalker trying to kill A Pre-Kylo Ren Ben Solo. The Set Pieces are spectacular, especially Snoke’s Liar which is home to the Amazingly-Choreographed “Red Room Battle” In the end, Star Wars The Last Jedi is not a perfect film, in fact, it has a lot of problems with the script and not being as it seems. But, it still is an entertaining film that never gets boring thanks to easy flowing pacing and delivers some very cool and surprising moments. Expand

I don't think I have ever been as disappointed in a film as I was when leaving the cinema after seeing The Last Jedi.

The Pros

-Kylo Ren was a genuinely interesting character and the actor did a great job in portraying his battle between the dark and the light.

-Carrie Fisher delivers a brilliant performance.

-One or two moments when the film manages to recreate the magic of Star Wars

The cons

-Many boring characters that serve no purpose to the plot.

-Complete disregard to the universe and rules established by previous movies.

-Plot lines that end up being inconsequential to story.

-The art direction and cinematography moves away from any other star wars film.

-The humor is very "marvel like" every character has to have several one liners that take away from the seriousness of the story.

-Unlike any other star wars movie.

Conclusion

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve written, deleted, and rewritten more lines of this review than I care to recall. The opening lines most of all. My goal was to approach this with a level head rather than give into the pointless rage that seems to be gripping many reviewers. There’s plenty to be angry about, after all. But the more I reflected on it the more it became clear that I don’t feel anger at all. I feel sadness. The Last Jedi broke my heart.

Rian Johnson wanted to take Star Wars in a new direction. I don’t fault him or Disney for that. This is not the first time that changes have enraged a fandom. It certainly won’t be the last. But this shift is not merely a change in scope or some bold new direction for the franchise. It’s a bellwether for Disney’s vision of the future. It’s the death of Star Wars as we knew it.

Just like thousands of others, I’ve enumerated my very own list of things that put me off about TLJ. But rather than nail my grievances to the Internet like the Martin Luther of Nerds, I think the most important thing to do is to add context to all the complaints about the “tone” of the movie.

Abrams and Johnson delivered starkly different messages with their films. Abrams tells audiences that The Force Awakens will “begin to make things right” and that what made Star Wars special can be reclaimed by a new generation. Conversely, Johnson urges the audience to forge a new path toward the future. Rather than build upon Abram’s foundation he declares with The Last Jedi that the past must be left behind. It’s true that Abrams rehashed most of the major themes of the original trilogy in Episode VII. TFA didn’t have an original plot. But it used that familiar structure to introduce new characters that felt like a part of the Star Wars universe. Those characters had the potential to organically evolve the franchise over the course of a trilogy. JJ handled the lore with care, like something sacred. He preserved the soul of Star Wars.

Johnson took an aggressive opposition to Abrams’ approach. He brought his audience a more original core story, but chose to undermine Star Wars tropes in favor of a harried race toward the future. He treated the groundwork of The Force Awakens as a list of plot points to clean up rather than as a launch pad for rising action. He made choices that forever closed the doors that Abrams opened.

The best example of this is in the treatment of Anakin’s lightsaber. In The Force Awakens it is a character. It carries weight and guides the action. It acts as a reminder of a tragic past as well as the catalyst for a bright future. For the last two years it has been frozen in time, waiting in Rey’s outstretched hand as her training in the ways of The Force is just about to begin… only to be treated as a slapstick punchline in the end.

I laughed in the theater when Luke tossed his father’s lightsaber over his shoulder. I wanted to find humor in it. Maybe there would be a lesson? Perhaps a Yoda-esque farce? But like most of The Last Jedi, it was an empty action; a cheap subversion of expectations. From that moment the lightsaber was simply a prop. Its role in Luke’s life barely acknowledged. Its thrall over Rey forgotten. The details of its recovery left to some future spin off movie. Where Abrams saw meaning and nuance in the rich history of Anakin’s lightsaber, Johnson saw a brutal laser sword that tethered him to someone else’s narrative. The destruction of Anakin’s lightsaber was not poetic. It was not a symbol for the conflict between Rey and Kylo Ren. It was a message: what came before is ended.

I’m not angry at Rian Johnson. I’m not angry at Disney. I’m sad that The Force Awakens was a one-off. It was a “Star Wars Story.” Its questions will never have answers. In the end it didn’t make things right at all.

Its overloaded with action scenes, that while admittedly very pretty, leave little time for character development among the new cast. I expected and accepted that as never ending action seems to be a hallmark of all things high budget and Hollywood these days but certainly the most egregious trait this film has in common with the marvel franchise is the low brow, for lack of a better word stupid, humor that does not fit with the film and really breaks the 4th wall in its absurdity. that, the overall plot direction, and some out of place cutesy little alien critters that I'm sure Disney is producing in plush doll form by the millions as we speak, sums up my complaints. Apart from all that it has some truly surprising twists and we get to see Mark Hamil again, so although I have my complaints and completely dislike the direction this new series has gone I would say its worth a watch, and I do mean a "watch" singular. A second viewing or buying of the movie? certainly not. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie really needed someone to look it over and say "does this make any sense" or "why are we doing this?". Where to begin.

The"chase scene" in space doesn't make any sense. Tie fighters don't have a "limited" range. They just can't jump in to hyperspace. A transport can not do that much damage to a capital ship that big.

To much plot holes, I'm already tired of writing.

As a film onAs a sci-fi film, I thought The Last Jedi was a decent film with quite good imagery. Some scenes, like the scene with the cruiser blowing through the First Order's central ship, were actually really well executed and creative. As a film on its own, it definitely stands its significant ground, and show how much effort Disney has put into the franchise.
However, this movie is a sequel to The Force Awakens, and is an entry into the Star Wars series as a whole. And, on that ground, it concerns me how little care was given into recreating the atmosphere and style which made Star Wars what it is. The Last Jedi, above all else, feels like a Disney movie throughout its run time, which doesn't bode well for what should be a trilogy first and foremost. The aesthetic of a dirty, worn universe is gone, replaced by a more glossy and traditional Disney part-cyberpunk world likely because it's cheaper to shoot and animate for. This is a shame, considering that was one of the things J.J. did best in the previous film. Alien characters, too, have taken a cutback, a hallmark of Star Wars films. Interactions are kept to a bare minimum, with no subtitled scenes or, really, talking aliens whatsoever. Those that are there are mainly for comic relief, something the film has inherited an overabundance of from Marvel. (Yes, Star Wars has included humor in the past. But this feels different, and its comedy has that off-beat time which screams Disney over Lucasfilm.) The music is almost unrecognizable, with few notable themes throughout and low usage of the pre-existing score. Classic cast members were limited to only seconds of screentime, and what they have is painfully underutilized. This is a worse wound with the real-life death of Carrie Fisher, which means we have none of the classic cast able to fill living roles. Luke shouldn't have died in this film, especially since it could easily have been edited around. The plot, as a whole, is weak. The Force Awakens, with its sensation of buildup to this film, is virtually irrelevant. All of the plot points set up in the previous film are ignored, a common trait with this film. Much of the established canon is disregarded as unimportant, even with what was stated in the films themselves. Much of the dialogue is poor, too, making me think this is a script problem and not a direction issue. (I would follow by saying this is not Rian Johnson's fault, but iMDb states he wrote this film as well.) The story seems more obsessed with OCs and reinventing the wheel than it does following the traditions of the franchise, and that saddens me immensely. You can tell George Lucas was not consulted, and the plot suffers as a result.
All that being said, I didn't hate the film. Again, a lot of the space CG was effective, and I am thankful to say the Porgs are not nearly as prominent as the trailer makes them seem. Kylo Ren's character was much better developed in this film than it was in TFA, leading to his performance with Daisy Ridley working quite decently. But I don't feel this makes up for a narrative weak film with such a low respect for its original material.

The mystery and grandeur is gone: the force feels like parlor tricks, the characters are like people you know. This is not Star Wars.

It does some of the 'small story' well: portraying realistic characters and their motivations, and some accurate 'petty politics' (that don't add any real interest).

The writing is curiously unpredictable: with the usual Hollywood trash you know exactly what is going to happen, but this is unfamiliar trash (it reminds me of some Netflix stuff). So a point or so for that.

I actually like Rey and Kylo Ren, but everything else is bad.

And the rebellion is too England accent heavy.

I wonder what Star Wars episode 50 will be like... Disney paid $4 billion for Star Wars... Star Wars will be going forever like Batman, etc. lol

At the same time I would rather have more Star Wars than have it die with Lucas at the first 6. Maybe they'll get better at this eventually and we'll have a few gems a la 'The Dark Knight'.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this movie but unfortunately it is too uneven to give a glowing review. Visually it is magnificent and the audio is excellent as well. The acting is good but very little time is spent developing the new characters. We never find out why the events of The Force Awakens happened and multiple scenes are ripped off from past Star Wars films. The action is great but I was left with more questions than answers. Luke is completely wasted in this film and should never act this way. Expand

This is coming from an avid Star Wars fan.
I didn't expect a brilliant movie, I expected them to deepen the plot and the characters introduced in Force Awakens. All of them had potential.
Yet it was all turned in favor of doing a Marvel movie in the Star Wars universe. A good laugh here and there is okay, but this movie puts too much emphasis on bringing up laughs.

I loved some of the lines from Luke. The were the sound of the fans - the past Jedis did lots of things wrong and that's what finally broke him. Yet he was out of character at least two or three times.

Poe was a puppy held in a cage. Lots of noise and movement, but in the end - none of effect. Finn could be completely cut out of the movie and it wouldn't change a thing.

Leia had her scenes and one in particular should've been her last. That would be so much more both for her and Kylo. Yet they went with Superman style. Foolish.

Hux is a joke in this movie and I reckon that's on purpose.

While this one was not able to deliver the same thing that "Empire strikes back" did, it copied some of it, while also borrowing from "Return of the Jedi", yet lacking it's depth.

Kylo Ren is not and will never be the next Vader. Adam Driver tries hard, but all that is being written for his character makes it impossible.

Snoke was put to waste in the movie.

The FO and Resistance chase was absurd, and I mean absurd while looking at all SW movies and the final fight was just so plain and simple, it irritated me.

I feel a bit broken by this movie, as I see where Disney wants to go with it. "Kill the past", as Kylo states it, is Disney's plan. Cut the ties with the previous installments. That is "a" strategy.

I find it a broken one, as it could've built a new cult based on the old movies, sparkled with a fresh look, yet it killed both.

To sum up, two quotes:
- Mark Hamill on his role in TLD: "When I read 8, I told Rian [Johnson, the writer-director], 'I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you've decided about my character'," Hamill said during an ABC interview.
- "This is not going to go the way you think." I concur. Sadly.

I feel as individual points, I enjoyed those more than people loved this movie.

I can't get over the ridiculous space chasing and unearned resolution, which is most of this movie. The tension should not be existing. No matter how awesome the light speed suicide run looks (it is one of the greatest thing I ever see and I can't deny it was a fantasy in my head). It breaks my immersion of all the space battles in star wars.

The core audience for this franchise skews older. Disney wants to make money going forward, and that means changing the skew of the core demo. And that's all this movie is -- trying to skew the movie to a younger audience. As a business decision, it's probably the correct one.

Sadly, they created a mediocre movie. Visually, this film is stunning. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are both extremely talented actors. They both put in great performances. But the massive plot holes, the terrible narrative choices, and the criminal wastes of the audience's time conspire to make the film, as a whole, simply...meh.

Star Wars movies have always been about black and white morality tales. Sometimes you get a gray-ish character in there for flavor. This attempt to create Breaking Bad in space undermines that history. And it commits some fundamental narrative sins: don't set the audience up for a big reveal, then not give it to them. Poor storytelling and poor writing.

Rian Johnson told us we wouldn't like his movie, in not so many words. We should take him at his word.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm ok with Luke gone. Let's be fair, it has to happen at some point for the new stories to begin. The problem is the movie has many flaws. The main story really is not well built especially at the end. You want Luke to pass on the Jedi spirit to Rey? OK! Fine. They need to be the main characters that click at the end. But obviously this is not the case. Luke swings his sword for 30 seconds and Rey lifts rocks for 10 seconds and that's it. It is nice to have supporting characters but they can't mess up the major story line. Also, the story line of Fin and Rose doesn't really make much sense and it is totally unnecessary, especially for the part where they went to look for the code guy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just feel... Empty. Basically, nothing of any consequence happened, whatsoever. Every major major plot thread was tossed out, and while I appreciate the attempt to bring something new to the table, I think it failed badly. Rey was boring and predictable, and the interesting possibility of her going to the dark side or going more grey was a completely blatant red herring. There were multiple character death fake outs, which simply existed to create cheap twists. Character motivations were vague at best, and non-existent at worst. There were tons of things going on, which mostly existed to pad runtime and make you feel like there was actually some sort of progress. The porgs literally served no movie purpose whatsoever, and weren't even introduced in any meaningful way. They just existed to sell plush toys for Disney. The only redeeming factors were Kylo Ren being an intense, layered, complex character, and Luke being equally well written. Additionally there was THAT great scene with Kylo and Rey. Those are the only things to redeem this movie for me. Expand

Many of the narrative decisions here were refreshing too, from plans failing to materialize, chasitizing of reckless bravura in favor of feminine wisdom, lamentations on the ambiguity of good and evil, reluctant father figures, and some surprising tension/tenderness between Kylo and Rey. Still, the movie is genuinely bad through most of its overlong (by a few parsecs) running time. It's a tonal mess and the reliance on humor ends up more like a crutch. It's also just a shame they couldn't have tried to make something good with the material instead. In it's current form, Its really taking a lot of mental gymnastics and Orwellian double think to contort my brain sufficiently and appreciate the absurdity on display in this new Disney trilogy. Unfortunately I didn't get the same reaction when watching the latest installment, here's my reasons:

Firstly the film's runtime is way too long, I'm not saying long films are bad, but when you start to feel like it's going on for too long that's when it becomes an issue, I had this feeling about an hour into it and I felt it could have been shortened.

The film tugs on a lot of branches and tries to explores each of them equally, unlike the Force Awakens you get the story development of Rey and Finn as they get introduced to the world and you follow their story and development, in The Last Jedi you don't really get that.

"Forced comedy" was cringe, I feel like they've seen the success of Thor Ragnarok and some other Marvel titles and decided to add some jokey fun here, this is not what Star Wars is about and to me this just didn't work. I wanted to see more development between Rey, Finn and Ren, you got some of that in this story and admittedly these were the only sequences I enjoyed but the film wasn't really about them, or rather their stories felt less significant, in a lot of ways it was more about the Rebellion as an organisation. I don't understand why the critics say this was the best Star Wars ever... I thought it was okay.. but I preferred Force Awakens to this one.

There are enough things that I cannot get past to give it a good rating, lore wise. First of all, Leia should be dead, I call absolute bs on the force pull. Second, I disagree with the force link thing, I am sorry but it was never like that in the rest of the canon, once again bs. Snoke served no purpose, he claims the force link but as a master manipulator myself, he didn't do jack, it happened naturally, he just tried to take credit for it. And the biggest issue... LUKES LIGHTSABER IN HIS PROJECTION SHOULD BE GREEN!!!! Yeah, its blue. Rey finds Anakins saber in episode 7, and Anakins saber is destroyed after the battle with snoke. This movie seemed more concerned with subverting expectations and tropes than telling a cohesive story. Was it enjoyable to watch, yes. Much in the same way a Marvel movie is fun to watch. But I don't think I will rewatch this move for years to come like I have for the other Star Wars movies. I think that casual fans of Star Wars will be fine with this movie and I don't mean to sound snooty or elitist. Most of this movie's flaws fall into fridge logic. And most people don't waste time in their life sitting around thinking about it. So yeah take your kids, go see it at least once. I'm likely going to see it one more time at least so Disney already won in that regard, the people who will be most upset will be obligated to see this movie at least one or two times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are so many awful things in just film I can't wrap my head around it:
- the humour got a chuckle here and there but it was seriously Prequels level **** It will not age well.
- Poe was done so dirty with that plot line- he's been shown to be a competent leader; him not understanding the strategy makes no sense when you consider his years of service. Also his "she's not what I expected"- he **** serves under Princess Leia, Poe knows powerful women, don't project your misogyny onto good characters, Rian.
- Finn. Jesus, he was shafted so goddamn hard. His and Rose's plot line did absolutely nothing to drive the plot anywhere- such a waste of time. There was so much potential to explore about Finn and they chose to do nothing with him. - I will never forgive Rian for the rest of my life for making me watch Luke Skywalker stare dead eyed in the face at Rey as he drinks green sea cow **** juice.
- Luke has some okay scenes and the Crait scene was epic, and I cried at Luke and Leia's reunion. But I **** hated the way they explained away the fallout with Luke/Kylo. If Luke felt a moment of hatred flow through him, fine, that somewhat makes sense for him. However, the narrative doesn't frame it like that; rather it's done to shown Kylo as being sympathetic and rationalizing his attack. I don't think I'm explaining this right, but Luke's actions serve Kylo's character more than they serve Luke, and that really bothered me. Luke deserved more than that.
-Rey. Goddamn they **** Rey so badly in this film it honestly makes me so sad. She's the first female jedi protagonist and a plot that was supposed to be her finding her balance and place in the force became this redemption mission for a man she spoke to 3 times. What was supposed to be HER conflict with light and dark became Kylo's; she was just roped into his conflict without being given one of her own.
God they just let down Rey so hard in this, but they did that to a lot of characters.
-as a lifelong Star Wars fan, the "resolution" of killing
Snoke was the biggest **** YOU to fans who spent years waiting for an expansion of SW lore. Who is he? Where is he from? How is he connected? Now it's nothing. And this leads me to wonder: of Kylo is the driving force for all of the darkness in the galaxy, how is redemption? How
Is it even possible? The Emperor worked because he was this pillar that had to be toppled in the OT. Now it's Kylo? I personally think this movie showed Kylo to be too far gone and irredeemable, but I feel like they're still trying to make him sympathetic. I'm just so lost as to where the conflict is and who the villain is.
But yeah I felt like all of the harder potential from the first was lost in space with this one. Biggest disappointment of the year.

Episode VIII, on the other hand, just left me bored and frustrated. It had totally useless scenes, nonexistent character development, and a predictable story arc that adds nothing to Episode VII and in fact, leaves you wondering: "Just...why?" The acting and handful of memorable moments scattered in this film save the day, but I have the feeling that 'The Last Jedi' has Rian Johnson following down the path of the George Lucas prequels. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. STAR WARS FANS ARE TEARING THIS FILM APART. And rightly so.

The Last Jedi was a fun movie. It had everything you'd want to see in a blockbuster: goal-driven characters, a great musical score, and explosive action. And yes, BB-9e and the Porgs were clearly made for merchandise, but so were the Ewoks so it's not like Lucasfilm hasn't milked the cash cow before. But I left the theater discontent. Here's why:

The Last Jedi did not add much depth to the Force Awakens. In the end of TFA, there's a real gray area in Kylo's future. I got the feeling there was still light in young Ben. By the end of TLJ, it's completely snuffed out. He's not a complex character anymore. He's just a very one-dimensional baddie. Even his mom knows he's a goner. There's a real problem with this conclusion, however. The whole movie hints at hope in Kylo. Rey senses it. After Luke was honest with Rey, the audience can tell that there's a misunderstanding between master and apprentice. An internal conflict still exists within him. That is, until his betrayal to Snoke. Then, Kylo transforms into the blandest character ever. Quite comparable to Steppenwolf from the DCEU's failed team-up movie. I wanted so badly to invest in the villain, but I couldn't after Luke's lightsaber was torn apart.

And then there's Snoke. I understand maybe Rian Johnson didn't think he was very important to the plot, but his quick exit was a bad idea. There was so much potential with his character, but nope. All wasted. It just sucks to wait a whole year for the build up just to see him go so soon. I do admit, the way he died was pretty cool, but at least give him a backstory. Star Wars fans go crazy after that. And after the countless Snoke theories that accumulated over the past couple years, I can't imagine how the writers of this film got together and said, "Do you know what would be cool? If Snoke just died without a backstory. I'm sure fans would eat that **** up." Well guess what, we didn't.

So Mark Hamill didn't like Johnson's direction on Luke Skywalker. I HATED WHAT JOHNSON DID TO LUKE. First of all, his disbelief that Ben Solo couldn't be saved from the dark side? Darth Vader admitted himself that Luke was the one who turned him good again. So why couldn't he have talked with his nephew and had a flat out family discussion with him. Yeah, he may have been impulsive in the original trilogy, but you'd think Luke would have learned by now what his being like 60 years old and all. Second, Luke as a hermit... doesn't really fit his character. The prequel trilogy lay the grounds for why Yoda could make a good hermit. He's hella wise. Luke, on the other hand, has always been a fighter. He did not of that in this film. And if you say I'm wrong because of the scene with Kylo, he just dodged Kylo's lightsaber a couple times. And then he dies, no wait. That's just hologram Luke. No wait. He's dead. GG Luke, you thought too hard you had a brain aneurysm. If you thought Snoke's potential was wasted, Luke had like 10x the potential, and it was also wasted. TLJ did nothing to further the elements of TFA. There was nothing riveting in the story, nothing new that we didn't already know, just a jumbled up mess. There were things I enjoyed. I liked Rose. I thought she was a great character who really stood by her morals. I gotta say, I'm Asian American and I did appreciate the fact that Star Wars has become more and more diversified. If any fans complain against diversity in Star Wars they are just racist. So, good on Lucasfilm and Disney for that I guess. And great job by Kelly Marie Tran. Benicio del Toro is in this film, which is a plus...

If this was a standalone film, I might have given it a higher score. But this is Star Wars. And it did not feel like a Star Wars film.

Captain Phasma was also wasted. You know what, Johnson took like the three most visually compelling characters in this film and killed them off... I'm actually pissed thinking about it right now. Good luck JJ Abrams. You're going to need it.

Meh. Not a good script, plot holes and unnecessary childish jokes. The Force Awakens made me think about a lot of possible theories, this movie makes me think if I really want to watch the next one. In conclusion, a very big disappointment.

Every major character question or plot advancement comes down to this: "it doesn't matter. your heroes don't matter. Jedi's don't matter. Those intruiguing backstories you want to learn more about? They don't matter."

We get it: This is a NEW Star Wars, intent on installing fresh faces. But why all the plot holes and needless trouncing of iconic characters? General Akbar gets killed while the purple haired kindergarten teacher is immediately immortalized? Luke sees his old lightsaber, the lightsaber that Obi Wan gave to his father during his training... then was passed onto Luke during his growth as a Jedi... Yeah, that lightsaber? Toss it out. It's dumb. Doesn't matter.

At no point does Rey receive any instruction, training or coaching in the ways of the force. She's simply bestowed them and rises about Luke Skywalker himself in power...

Why did they go to the casino city again? To make a point about weapons dealer ethics and animal rights? Wait...what? (When they did get thrown in prison, a master codebreaker happened to be chilling there, with a key to escape. He must have been waiting there because... oh... that's right... IT DOESN'T MATTER.

The cinematography: Gorgeous.
The locations (other than a needless casino subplot): Fantastic
The writing: Very, very lazy and subpar.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just like everyone else I went into this movie with large expectations that were unmet once again. This movie feels like a cheap imitation of "Empire Strikes Back" the similarities between the two are so blatantly apparent:

* An opening battle at the beginning that involves the resistance on the run from the First Order
* The force-sensitive character spending the majority of the plot away from the rest of the characters, "learning" (I use that term very loosely) from the old master on a secluded planet. * The old master being reluctant to train the student due to past mistakes * The rest of the characters being pursued by the bad guys for much of the film yet unable to get away
* Said characters taking a risk by recruiting a new hacker character from a flashy location, who's motives are unclear.
* The Jedi-apprentice character going into a dark side cave, being made to face herself then leaving her "training" too early to rescue her friends
* The hacker betraying the people who were counting on him
* A "revelation" (if you can call it that) about the force-sensitive character's parents
* A major confrontation between The Jedi Apprentice and the big-bad-emperor-archetype * Kylo Ren turning on Snoke and killing him due to Rey's influence
* Land speeders facing off against AT-ATs on a planet covered in white powder (might as well be snow)
* The rebels being scattered and broken at the end, but with a sense of hope and a mission

Stop me if ANY of this sounds familiar. This movie basically took the entire plot of Empire Strikes Back and threw in some new visuals. There are many bad decisions throughout this movie that hurt it:

- The "Revelation" of Rey's parents being nobodies pretty much wastes all the hype built up from the last movie
- Snoke being killed by Kylo Ren almost effortlessly (Why didn't he just do this earlier?)with no backstory being give. This makes Snoke seem like a typical stock character meant to move the story forward
- Leia's sudden use of the force with no training (that we know of)
- Captain Phasma being dispatched with literally no character development whatsoever
- No Jedi Training
- Forced humor
- No Lightsaber duels
- Yoda (his appearance was pure fan service. Totally unnecessary)
- Luke's demise, such a massive waste of Mark Hamill's talents.

There are only a few bright spots in this movie:

- The force connection between Rey and Ren
- Snoke's force powers
- Rey and Ren fighting together
- Luke's Force Illusion

There is a padded out middle with a needless side plot that contributes nothing to the story. It gives more time to throw away characters, but still leaves them as throw away characters by it's resolution. They also include an odd technological plot point that feels more like Star Trek than Star Wars. There are so many holes in the story left by The Force Awakens, but The Last Jedi uses it's long run time to create it's own new holes instead of filling the old ones. You can totally tell which scenes were added for those re-shoots that delayed the movie from May to December and they were completely unnecessary. I think TFA is actually better overall because while TFA replaced story with action, TLJ replaces story with just... well nothing much really. Filler. The jokes are mostly bad but they don't distract too much from what's going on. People will defend this movie by calling criticisms nitpicking but I really don't think they are. The plot holes are huge and obvious. You don't need to nitpick them, you can't miss them.
Having different writers and directors for the 3 movies is giving them a total lack of consistency in vision for the story.
Overall this trilogy feels like a cash in to sell books and eventually create a huge new extended universe just like the old cannon had.

There was a LOT of emphasis on Poe in this movie and they fleshed out his character - young, brash, always trying to be the hero and sometimes getting it but sometimes not. You get to see him in a *lot* of starfighting which makes for great action sequences.

Rose's character felt way more down to earth than Rey. Plucky engineer turned heroine.

Feels like this movie should've been about 30-45 minutes longer - the subplots really did not feel that well meshed together at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I can sum up my feelings about this movie as: entertained, but very disappointed. It is truly an entertaining spectacle: the visuals and the musical score are great. All fun and worth my money if this were a generic sci-fi flick. But this movie fails horribly as a Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi somehow pulls off an incredible feat by conflicting not only with the original 6 movies, but also The Force Awakens, which concludes 35 seconds before this movie begins. Having different writers undoing what the previous movies set up is not a formula for success. The Good: I was absolutely annoyed with Disney's decision to reboot Episode 4 and call it Episode 7. I give TLJ some credit for not being an obvious rip off of Episode 5, but they narrowly straddled that line. Some scenes are obviously lifted from ESB but in different order. Particularly the Speeder v AT-AT battle on the white, desolate planet to protect the shielded base. You know the one. Kylo Ren was very well written; as a matter of fact, he’s the only character they developed in this movie. I also felt like the music was kicked into high gear this time around. My only complaint was that it wasn't new music, just old scores we've heard before. The movie also had some interesting character designs, such as the new imperial guard with their lightsaber-resistant armor. The new First order ships were interesting and the hyperspace ramming scene was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen in Star Wars. But the integrity of the Star Wars universe can't be sacrificed for the sake of the spectacle and this movie is very, very guilty of this.

The Bad: there are many places where TLJ misses the mark, and sometimes undoes what was established in movies prior. Disney’s fingerprints are all over this because there were so many bad attempts at humor, even in serious scenes. I can’t believe there was a 'your mom' joke - prank call in Star Wars.. and it was right before a big space battle. Wow. Finn and Rose are completely useless and their subplot drags the movie on for an extra 45 minutes. Going back to the hyperspace ramming scene, it just completely changes the game for how Star Wars battles should take place. Star Destroyer-sized ships and above should be sitting ducks for hyperspace kamikaze. Even the Death Stars. As cool as it looked, I'd rather they'd never included it. The writers also took EXTREME liberties in their portrayal of Luke. The way he behaves in this movie, you'd think you were watching a deranged clone or homeless Mark Hamill. I don't love Episode 7, but it established the good and bad guys were looking for Luke because he's the key to saving the galaxy. The opening crawl says as much! But not only did Luke not want to be found (why was there a map??), he is depressed, jaded and overall isn't in character until Rey yells at him. I don't understand how Luke can redeem the most feared tyrant in the galaxy, Vader, but fantasizes about killing his own nephew in his sleep before he's ever done anything wrong. That completely erased the conclusion of Luke’s evolution from Eps 4-6. That's no Luke Skywalker. That is complete shenanigans. Worse so, hardly any of the questions left open from TFA are followed. Rian Johnson faked the audience out by waving off the mysteries (and plot holes) JJ Abrams created in TFA. But by doing so, he left a void of backstory surrounding nearly everything we've seen on screen since TFA. Very poorly done. Rey's mysterious parents and missing last name? None of it mattered -- she's simply Jedi Jesus for no reason. Snoke, the man who turned the galaxy upside down and corrupted Ben Solo? Dead within the first half of the movie. Just destroyed Death Star #3? Doesn't matter, there’s still an infinite First Order fleet and the Resistance is even weaker than before, somehow. In fact, they STILL haven't bothered explaining the Resistance/F.O. conflict at all. They eventually go back to saying "rebels" in this movie, so I really have no idea what's going on. How can I enjoy this trilogy if I can't follow along?

So all in all, The Last Jedi improves a bit on the originality side of things, but barely. It's ESB with the scenes moved around. I was certainly entertained. But the writers failed to fit this movie in with the greater Star Wars continuity. Narration was sacrificed for spectacle. Old characters and their relationships have been sacrificed to prop up new characters. Space battles from past movies have been completely rendered useless since we could have hyperspace rammed things this whole time. I just don't recognize this new brand of Star Wars. I think it is entirely meant for new fans only, because clearly no attention is being paid to the source material. I expect more writer shenanigans when the reins go back to JJ for episode 9, so more time will be spent answering/obfuscating things introduced in this movie instead of telling a NEW story. This may be where I finally get off the Disney Star Wars train.

Having a little humor is okay as we did from the start of this series, but the way it was done in this movie was so campy and inappropriate, almost like they hired Seth Rogen to write the comedic parts. Those parts might have been funny if you are eight years old. I'm not a big fan of Star Wars. None of the previous movies are great, but none of them are bad either. All are sometimes entertaining and beautiful but flawed and uneven.

The Last Jedi has more attempt at humour than previous entries, but the humour falls flat, it feels forced and jarring, and I didn't find myself laughing or even grinning. Those furry Porgs have nothing to do with the plot, rather they are there to be cute and funny and most likely are meant to sell plush toys. Visually they *are* well done as are other creatures, but those creatures are not in the background at the edges of the scene where they should be. Visuality has always been Star Wars' strong point; beautiful vistas and grand spaceships on fire, but here the island and the salt plain are the only visually striking settings, everything else is just a muddle of places that I just can't remember anymore.

Mark Hamill is great as Luke, but the rest of the cast can't really compare to the likes of Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, Liam Neeson or Evan McGregor.

This movie had a lot of really great pieces as well as some awkward ones. Overall, it just didn't quite come together to make the same quality movie as The Force Awakens and Rogue One.

POSITIVES

- Mark Hamill and Adam Driver absolutely killed it with their acting. They pretty much singlehandedly saved the movie from being a 4-5 for me.

- The plot is original. Those who complained that TFA was basically A New Hope should not be disappointed like that again.

- Cinematography and special effects were top notch. In particular, a certain space scene and a lightsaber fight were some highlights.

NEGATIVES

- There were certain things added that were clearly just meant to sell toys. They did nothing to advance the plot or develop characters (if you've seen the trailer, you'll know what I mean).

- Certain "main" characters were either: bland, served no purpose, and/or were shoehorned in.

- Despite an original plot, there were some crazy plot-holes and things that just didn't make sense.

- It was very jarring, tone-wise. Massive scenes of death and destruction were broken up by BB-8 doing goofy things and other characters giving Tony Stark-esque one-liners.

- Rian Johnson took JJ's foundation and just tossed it aside, for the most part. OVERALL

- This is a decent movie. Certainly worth going to see. Some of the acting and special effects were fantastic. The plot was fine for the most part. However, I'm more concerned going forward on how this film will affect the quality of the next film.
