This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, I'm going to try and be as level headed as possible when writing this review. I have this bad habit, when I see Star Wars movie in theaters I simply cannot look at the downsides, and Im always leaving thinking each movie was better than the last. However though I did enjoy this movie as a whole. There were some small issues, and big ones, such as the glaring and often quite annoying political correctness constantly shoved down the viewers throat. You can tell the difference between the George Lucas films, and the disney films. Not just in cgi, in this context its unimportant. The main thing being that forced political correctness is, well nonexistent in George's films. Now, I'm not praising the prequels here. However this cannot be ignored. Not ignoring the fact that the cast is mostly quite good, such as performances from Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver really standing out for better. Im not saying there is a problem with a diverse cast, in fact, it can make a movie better. However at times you can start to see the changes for worse. The cast in this movie is incredibly politically driven, all female characters have major roles in the plot. All major leaders in the resistance are female. Princess Leia, is no longer a princess but now a general. Along with Admiral Holdo also being a woman. Leaving only 3 main protagonists as men. Finn, Poe, and Luke. With countless antagonists being imperial whites. Who also happen to have clearly no idea what they are doing. Back to the female roles, Admiral Holdo's choices are, no matter what the lesson is trying to be, awful. Her choices where completely irrational and when the only person who attempts to make a difference is Poe. When he is literally and figuratively shot down by Leia and Admiral Holdo, they play it off as. Oh! He's just a rowdy boy, oh masculinity is so funny.

Ignoring the lesser important issue of forced political correctness. The plot itself, is, meh. To keep it simple 80% of the entire movie is rebel ships in space being picked off by the first order in a fight against time, so Finn, and newly introduced Rose have to find a codebreaker to hack first order technology that can track ships through lightspeed. A technology that has never appeared in a star wars movie. EVER! Meanwhile Luke and Rey are doing their own schenanigans on whatever planet The Force Awakens ended on. One key subplot regarding the Resistance, is the codebreaker thing I mentioned prior and the quest to get it turns into maybe one of the slowlest and most pointless feeling segments in Star Wars history. The entire sequence to get the codebreaker ends in Finn and Rose getting put in jail. Where they meet another code breaker, who, 30 minutes later, hands them to the first order. Whatever emotion that part was trying to convey, it only left me personally unsatisfied. Another issue, much shorter is my issue with the fate of Snoke. He just dies with no development. Creating a Return of the Jedi moment but instead of being the climax of the trilogy its only the middle act. So Snokes existence was entirely a placeholder for Kylo to just take over, moving on I guess....

In all the movie is riddled with seemingly useless plots, choices by the characters that are as stupid as a white girl in a horror movie, and politically forced agendas that can leave us with the fact that Star Wars will never be the same again.......

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After I watched Episode VII I left cinema very angry and I was not entertained. Watching Episode VIII I was entertained and I left cinema satisfied. Yet now thinking about it, it was not that good.
Positives:
Presence of space Battles
Story twists
Lot of action

Negatives:
Simply the story and setting of the movie is not epic enough. First Order is decently strong yet it's not epic enough. Only an average bad guys. Kylo Ren is interesting but he is also only average. He is like Sith Stormtrooper.
Leia flying
Luke Skywalker being stupid.
Snoke being stupid.

Hire somebody from Bioware to help create a decent Star Wars movie please. They created Star wars Knights of The Old Republic video game and that's best star wars story.

There are lots of flaws such as the story. It is probably worse then The Phantom Menace because lots of things don't make sense. Also (SPOILERS) villain dies to fast so that was a disappointment. That same scene is dedicated to ripping off the last Jedi. There is a lack of originality and I have seen star wars better then this. This movie does have really good effects though and it is fun to see. Then again the girl Rey is a bit of a Mary sue but hey gotta make it less confusing for the kids. I give it 5 out of 10 and I hope DISNEY learned their lesson and decides to make something good. I do fear for star wars. One more bad movie and they will stick to rouge one and han solo. We shall see. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have very, very mixed feelings on TLJ. I'm just going to break it down into bullets:
Pros:
-Capable female protagonist*
-Diverse cast+
-Top-tier special effects
-Cool locations
-OK pacing
-Luke Skywalker nostalgia 4 evah
-I liked Admiral Holdo. Fight me.

Cons:
*Rey and Rose edge precariously close to Mary Sue territory. Rey being a complete Force-badass despite very little formal training (although I'm glad she's not descended from 'Force royalty' because it implies that the universe may be full of Force-sensitive people just waiting to discover their potential, a la the kid at the end). Rose was underdeveloped and her planting a kiss on Finn just felt...ugh.
+I love that *some* people are collectively loosing their she-it over the "PC" and "SWJ pandering" because the idea of black people and women in their precious space opera franchise ruins their childhood. However, sweet MRA tears are no excuse for bad writing and one-dimensional characters. Also, it would be nice if we can get away from the trope that all space villains must be space Nazis. It's such a low-hanging fruit at this point.
-TLJ is rife with plot holes large enough to fly an X-wing through. Not a Dreadnaught mind you, but still enough to give you a headache if you choose to pay attention. You'll be fine if you suspend your disbelief and lower your expectations a notch.
-The Canto Bight subplot could--should have been cut. Full stop.
-I felt kind of cheated at the end because none of the main characters (Poe, Finn, Rey, Leia, Kylo, or Chewbacca) died. Not because I'm a sadist who likes seeing people die, but it seemed like the ancillary characters (Rose's sister Paige, Admiral Akbar [RIP], Holdo, the poor schlubs in the escape craft) were the ones to suffer the consequences of Poe's insubordination, Leia's inability to communicate her and Holdo's escape plan, and Finn and Rose's misjudgment of DJ. Honestly, I kind of wish that Rose hadn't intercepted Finn's kamikaze moment with the laser cannon. This leads to my next gripe:
-If Finn had sacrificed himself and destroyed the cannon, it would have spared Luke from doing the whole "I'm a punchy hologram" thing. Don't get me wrong-- his moment with Leia was beautiful and the fight was badass, but him Force-projecting from across the galaxy was a real stretch. Now he's dead, Rey has no master to teach her (is it too much to ask for a main character to actually work for their skill?)
-Snoke. What was his deal? I guess we'll never know.
-Like it's been said by countless others-- why not lightspeed-jump-smash the Destroyer in the first place? Was that always an option?? Overall, the takeaway I got from this film is that Disney had decided that the Star Wars franchise is for the young, new consumers and not the diehard fans of the original movies. I think it's great that kids are getting a more inclusive story that they can grow attached to the way older generations have. I just hope that the complex themes are explored in a thoughtful way without oversimplifying them with a binary good-bad, light-dark, Jedi-Sith modality that is easier on the 'younger' demographics. After TLJ my expectations have been permanently lowered, and I'm not even mad. Disappointed, but not mad.

The Last Jedi is another episode of Star Wars. Pacing-wise is essentially The Empire Strikes Back but with a much blander storyline, beloved characters turned into cannon fodder and real life politics sprinkled all along the movie.

This movie has some of the most hilariously bad scenes in all of Star Wars history, only second to those great dialogues in episode II. Dialogue is nearly as bad as that episode, however we don't have to endure minutes of political debate. Well, in this movie you'll find some filler in the way of a Finn substory that is the most tiresome and boring set of scenes you'll ever see in this types of movies. Even political discourse can be better.

The movie does not well with continuity problems in the beginning and end and ends essentially making the future episode IX something you wish not to see.

The humor is pretty hit and miss.

In conclusion: If you're a diehard fan, don't see this, it will make you really angry with the direction taken by Disney with this beloved franchise. If you haven't seen much, it may be worth a rental or something like that...

Many of the critics are seemingly jubilant to see modern political points being touched on in a Star Wars movie, and thus it is championed as “brave” and “daring”, but don’t let that fool you; this film is as hollow as it is politically pandering. It may forever be remembered as the film that ultimately killed the sequel franchise, as JJ Abrams was left to pick up the pieces and then jam them together in hopeful desperation that they might stick. Whether it truly did or not is ultimately contingent on the eyes of the beholder. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start my review by saying that in my opinion I feel like most of the more viscerally negative reactions to the movie are because it's a Star Wars movie, specifically the direct sequel to the widely successful and loved Episode 7 and spiritual successor to the most beloved Star Wars to this point Empire. Despite the fact that my inner nerd took exception to a lot of decisions in this movie, the really cool scenes are on par with some of the best and most iconic scenes in the franchise, and as a whole I enjoyed it more than I didn't. I honestly feel like if not for Episode VII and really liking the story/character threads that it started to sew, I'd like this movie a lot more.

There seemed to be a lot of hubbub about how much Episode VII seemed to mirror Episode IV. It's a fair criticism but I personally enjoyed that aspect of it. This movie feels like when they first started working on it they would continue to acknowledge a similar progression mirroring certain plot points of the original trilogy while gearing the future of the franchise toward the new characters. The first act will make you feel right at home if you're a fan of the original trilogy as the movie starts out pretty strong. Toward the end of the first act leading into the second though it feels almost as if Rian got cold feet based on the aforementioned "hubbub" .I feel like they spent the rest of the movie doing one of two things: 1. Rushing through the Empire and even Jedi callbacks through so they could move on from the comparisons and 2. Completely dismissing a lot of potentially interesting plot points and mysteries from Episode VII.

Mystery behind Snoke and who he is exactly? Dead. Rushed through the mirroring to the ending of Empire to essentially get it, despite a kick ass fight scene afterward. Finn's character arc (and placement as a co-star really) seems to get completely rebooted in favor of having him go through it again via some whacky side adventure that ultimately means nothing. Kylo torn on which "side of the force" he should be on, something that's touched on multiple times in the first act? Now the new supreme leader, tossing aside the Vader character arc hinted at through the first movie and a half. Toss in the fact that after one or two short training sessions with Luke that suddenly Rey's a pro with the force as opposed to Luke's amateurish familiarity with it after training with Yoda, and the tease that you might see Luke raise his again crashed-in-the-water X-Wing never shown on screen and there are so many missed opportunities.

Toss in a half baked spy/code cracker character with a really bizarre stuttering problem making points about the ethics about either side of a war that never goes anywhere and is negated by how **** the First Order is shown to repeatedly be, a blooming Finn/Rey chemistry that's been building for the better part of two movies that looks like it's suddenly tossed aside at the end with Poe Dameron suavely introducing himself to Rey just in time before the movie ends, Leia becoming some sort of space ghost jedi rather than using this as an opportunity to give Carrie Fisher the send off she deserves and Luke Skywalker coming up with a brilliant plan to stall Kylo Ren at the end without actually giving him the satisfaction of killing him only to die anyways, and this movie turns from a solid popcorn flick into a little bit of a conflicted mess that leaves me thinking this movie could've been so much more.

The good:
Music, visuals and special effects were great with only few minor exceptions

The neutral:
Humor (sometimes too forced and not fitting the situation, but some jokes were amusing - probably depends on your taste)
Trying to have a diverse cast including extras felt a little forced and as a really large jump from previous movies
Felt small-scale, not like any kind of galactic conflict, just these 5 characters + countless fodder versus these other 5 characters + countless fodder

The bad:
Useless, easily avoidable subplots
Almost no actual character development or world building (I wonder what next episode will be about)
New Deus ex machina devices and force powers
Felt more like recent comic book based movies than Star Wars

The ugly:
Missing a coherent vision or story behind all this
Bad guys are borderline incompetent (on top of being mostly 1-dimensional) and good guys have stupid plans too, main difference being bad luck versus insane amounts of good luck (like in the "execution" scene and many others)
Vacuum - you cannot fly through it like some kind of Superman (and if that scene was supposed to be in the atmosphere the movie did a really bad job of showing that, still probably the most stupid scene of all Star Wars)

Overall an OK movie to watch, just don't expect to get many answers, turn off your logic circuits and don't think about why something is hapenning

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Big fan of nearly anything Star Wars. Absolutely loved the original trilogy. Prequels were...interesting. Old books, cheesy cartoons / CGI shows etc. But there were so many things in this film I did not enjoy. As a film, let alone a Star Wars film.

What I liked:
- Puppet Yoda
- Yoda / Luke scene and interactions. - Bomber run scene at the start was very cool. Loved the struggle you feel for the Rebels. - Unexpected twists with Poe's plans.
- Visual effects. - Brief team up of Rey and Kylo.
- I was ok with the whole Carrie Fisher Jedi float scene. Why not, Jedi do some crazy amazing things. Expand on it. (Did not like how she was basically not harmed from the massive explosion though.)

What I did not like:
- Entire plot revolved around Rebels being slowly chased. Empire not able to send a few ships in front, or the sides. Very odd plot, especially for being 80% of the movie. - Empire is seen as disorganized goof-balls with tempers. Yes, their ranks are thinned. Make them a bit more serious please. - Snoke being killed off immediately. No history revealed. Figured something will be in the 3rd film. Poorly done regardless. - Entire Wacky-Crazy Adventures of Finn and Rose leading to nothing. Phasma death(?) just tacked on during the Wacky-Crazy Adventures.
- Not seeing more of the crazy cool looking Casino world. Tons of potential. - People finally decide warp-suicides are a thing. Could have done this a lot sooner.

It's hard to fully like or dislike this film. There's some good stuff like: interesting relationship between Rey and Ben S(w)olo, all scenes including Luke Skywalker and of course Poe Dameron. On the other hand Mr. Johnson gave us a really big "GO F%$K YOURSELVES!" with things like: giving screen time to characters that no one cares about (Rose, Holdo), wasting Finn, DJ (the hackerman, yea they cast Del Toro for this trash role), choosing not to develop anyone (except Kylo) from "the bad guys" side (i didn't like Phasma or Snoke very much but C'MON what was the point of their being in the franchise if they ended up like that?) .
We've got two movies in fact. The predictibale, boring one with rebels fighting Imperi... sorry, I mean FIRST ORDER. Also sub-plot of two love birds at the casino trying to find something to do and almost every "we can be as funny as MCU" scene (i don't know for sure but i should put here this specific part where Leia turns out to be Superman) . The second movie is the one with Rey learning things and training, Luke being grumpy and/or awesome while using new force tricks and Kylo developing some personality. Also we can add here moments with exchange of views between Leia and Poe, which weren't that bad . Although entire movie was long, it didn't feel like it. Maybe action was going a little bit too fast at some points.
I definitely going to rewatch Episode VII at least 2 times and place it somewhere next to the Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi and Rogue One. Just like the Age of Ultron (i'm purposely comparing this to other Disney film) it was a disappointment at some parts; it has elements that were good enough to keep viewers entertained but as a whole it could've been done much better.
One can say that Rian was only inspired by Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and stories from Legends however he was still keeping the old stuff just so we want to "buy" his movie and in the end not much of original content get through to be remembered in this mess.
Well, to be fair, at least this one is better than Farce Engorges (on the other hand that's not a big achievement).

I can't get over these sites trying to blame the fans for not liking this movie. I love the Star Wars franchise and actually somewhat enjoyed The Force Awakens (even though it was a clone of A New Hope) and Rogue One as well. Now lets take a look at The Last Jedi which somehow every critic seems to be overjoyed by. The humor at times was fun but many times was overused and out of place. Now let's look at the goofy and once again overused CGI (just like the prequels) through out the film. The Leia force float scene was awful, the running PT-ST was terrible, the characters riding on the back of "Clifford the Big Yellow Dog" looked like something that belonged in a children's cartoon, and the x-wing U-turn with space skidmarks (wasn't that in SPACEBALLS?), common guys. Wasn't it J.J. that said we were trying to get back to the way the old movies were done. I can't believe the critics didn't even mention the pacing. It's all over the place. I'm not even gonna complain about Luke. It's a sad way to portray the character and it's not what the fans wanted (even Hamill himself didn't seem to comfortable over these decisions). You don't give fans what they want and they will hate your movie. I'm pretty sure that's a universal reaction for any fan of any series. It's not just Star Wars fanboys that react that way. I personally didn't hate the way Luke was handled but I understand the reaction. Another thing, all these sites that have noticed the terrible fan rating on rotten tomatoes have not seemed to want to point out all the terrible user reviews on IMDB. It has also been hammered on here as well . The fans do not like this movie and cannot understand how the critics actually do. In fact many fans think you folks are getting paid not only to give the reviews your giving it, but also this,"fans are villains", damage control **** your pulling is just plain wrong. People grew up loving these movies, being mostly disappointed by the prequels, finding faith again in Force Awakens and Rogue One, and then ... being handed this poorly constructed movie. There are good moments in this movie!!! Don't get me wrong. It's not a complete disaster but honestly it's not great either. I loved the ship destroying the Empire Ships by using light speed. I liked the standoff between Kylo and Luke. Luke dusting off the shoulder was fitting and subtle enough to fit the style of humor these movies are known for. Overall though when I left the theater I felt very 50/50 over this movie and 50/50 does not sit well alongside the excellence of Star Wars. Even a puppet yoda ghost can't raise this film above a solid 50 or 5 out of 10 rating. Benicio Del Toro's forced stutter, a BB-8 Empire edition version robot (because why not?), cartoonish CGI (especially in the casino scenes), Rey's parents, no Snoke backstory, and this ridiculous, now love triangle (what are we trying for here,TWILIGHT ?). Yes I know Luke ,Han, and Leia seemed like it could have been going that route in the originals but we don't need that overused idea. This movie is FLAWED. The fact the critics are so oblivious to this really leaves fans to wonder if the media is being honest here and now that your blaming the fan base, oh you guys are making yourselves look like your collecting a check from Mickey Mouse himself. Look everyone is entitled to their opinion but when multiple sites are banning together to start making fans out to be bad guys over a poor movie, there is something wrong here. Either that or are current generation of critics just don't get it. As for the people giving this movie 10s or 0s you are all TROLLS of the worst kind. Neither of these scores are fair for this movie or almost anything that is media related. A 0 or a 10 should be reserved for the worst of the worst and the best of the best and shouldn't be handed out like candy on halloween. No wonder no one wants to take fans serious when we review things. Disney, Johnson, and Critics, this movie is bad. Deal with it. Expand

How is it possible to make some of the most ingenious and inspired scenes in SW universe and then cut to uninteresting cliche riddled rubbish. Basically this movie is an amalgamation of two films, one about rebellion and one about force, that are linked only by a flimsiest thread and sometimes visual reminders.
I loved one for the thought provoking ideas and visuals, and hated the other for utter lack of anything interesting (aside from possibly some slick CGI). Fynn is now utterly useless failure. Poe is a standard hot headed, wise cracking good guy, we have seen in most movies since the 80s. And Rose is just an exposition and punchline setup mechanism. Am I being too harsh? Think of the movie without them, does the resolution change much? Exactly!

That being said, this 2 and a half hour movie is actually worth it, for that one superior 40+minutes film. But only just.

Ending was cool, end was wierd.

So if you are not that into Star Wars, you will have a good moment and you'll enjoy this movie. But as a huge fan of Star Wars, I'm a bit worried. Like the VII, this movie doesn't add some interesting facts to the SW universe, and many question asked in the VII are still unanswered: Knights of Ren? Origins of Snoke? Moreover even if it's better done than in the VII, there are still copied-pasted scenes from the original trilogy: there is the equivalent of Hoth, Obi-Wan's death, The Emperor and Darth Vador vs Luke, the elevator from episode VI, rebels'escape from Hoth, the cave from Dagobah... and that's so sad. When will Disney offer us a new Star Wars? But with RO and episode VIII, they took more risks. Maybe IX will be a true SW, but isn't it too late? Expand

The movie tried to change things up to avoid the typical Star Wars formula of underdog-rebels-blows-up-planet in the end. While I appreciate the effort, there were many unnecessary plots and underutilized characters. Space battles were cool though.

Its fun and enjoyable at points, but half of the time I would shrugging my shoulders and wincing at forced attempts at humor and terribly constructed pacing and scenes. Its clear Johnson and Kennedy & Co. dont really care to place an emphasis on good writing, dialogue, exposition, character/world building, or atmosphere. They just want to push out another tent pole movie with little care for the source. This franchise is on the way down the drain. Not unexpected, but sad to see. Expand

I felt it was a decent effort in character development for the future films, but the tepid story and plots holes kind of ruined a lot of the positives. Additionally, a lot of the middle could have been shortened, and the whole Rey self-discovery portion didn't make sense to the lay-person (me), especially since I didn't major in English, so I have no idea what all that symbolic imagery meant to her character or to the story. With that said, light-saber and spaceship battles never hurt a Star Wars film, so at least we had that going for us. And the dialogue and character stories were decent, so at least it's got that in favor of it over the prequels.

Another negative is that I don't really like Adam Driver's performance for Kylo Ren. I'd say it's just too emo or bratty, not that layered like Daisy Ridley's depiction of Rey. The rest of the cast is pretty decent, with Mark Hamill upping his charisma at midichlorian levels we haven't seen since Episode IV.

So in the end...am I glad I saw it? That's kind of a push. It's 2.5 hours of some excitement, followed by some dragging on and a little disappointment and confusion, followed by some ok fight scenes, and ending with a lukewarm feeling in the end. Would I have watched it if I'd know what the experience would have been like? Eh, I guess so, just so I would know the story in case we get rave critic AND user reviews for the next installment. And in case Matthew Vaughn, Joss Whedon, or one of the Nolans happens to sign on for the next project.

Also Disney went over the top with these cute robots and crappy-eyed birds, it really became so annoyed (please don't buy your kids toys and merch with new SW creatures, don't support Disney). I wasn’t overly upset but I wasn’t completely satisfied as well. My opinion is that it was not a bad film per se, but that it was a very ambitious one. There are things that happen in this film that were completely unexpected that will work for some but be loathed by others. The film did have some memorable fight scenes and the acting as a whole was just as good as it was in The force awakens. The return of Mark Hamill was a great addition even though there were a few scenes that seemed off for his characters tone. Personally the biggest let down for me was that Rian Johnson seemed to completely disregard a lot of setup of J.J. Abraham’s film and just make his own movie. There was clearly a clash between the two director’s narratives and I think it ultimately hurt the film. In the end it was an enjoyable enough film for me, as I am a fan of the genre. It just didn’t meet the qualities of my anticipation, after waiting 2 long years for this film. I am still looking forward to see the conclusion to episode 9 as I still love the new characters and would like to see how their story ends. Expand

However, The Last Jedi is a film while has some great visuals and some very good acting from the cast but is a film flawed in the sense that the film feels like a filler chapter in a trilogy. Unlike the original trilogy where The Empire Strikes Back was a film which had strong narrative a felt like it's own film, The Last Jedi feels like it's only there to connect the first film to the third film. The reasons for this is simply because this film contains nothing of substance which you can take away from it, other than the death of a character which I will not spoil here. I hope that Star Wars films from now on are much better than this and actually tell a good story because this left me feeling empty and wanting more from this film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There was quite a bit to like about The Last Jedi, but there was far more that left me both feeling a bit 'meh'. It looks fantastic, both the opening and closing battle scenes are amongst the best in the series. But the rest of it just felt so-so and quite static, chiefly because most of the movie revolves around the slowest getaway since OJ - everyone on board HMS Exposition limping along and trying to do something interesting with their hair while Kylo and the First Order, with their galaxy bashing faster than light flying machines, can't seem to organise a simple road block.

Meanwhile, far far away on a rock in Kerry, Luke is in a proper snarky mood, Rey gets trippy, and Chewbacca..well...no idea, perhaps he's down the back of the Falcon reading those few books Luke hasn't been arsed to read in 30 years. Who knows.

There's some gubbins about an arms dealer: apparently, the First Order have more financial clout than the rebels which is why they have better weapons. I'm not sure I follow the logic here, did they buy the Starkiller base or outsource it? Perhaps episode IX is going to be about someone hacking Hux's email to reveal who's funding the First Order.

Hux. Like the worst Keystone Cops panto villain ever with his pasty face, rouged cheeks and minging eyebrows. Gleeson was pretty good in The Force Awakens, but here there's more ham on display than a Christmas window full of beglittered arses. Snokes is much more interesting this time around, while Kylo still has petulance issues and helmet hair. These bad guys are all utterly incompetent idiots, which makes it really hard to believe they could have so much power; I can see Kylo Ren sending out angry 'no-one-understands-me' 'fake-news' tweets at 3am while snacking down on KFC and Pepsi before he smothers himself in hairspray and poses for some Instagram selfies - the only thing he's conflicted about is which social platform has better filters and reach.

Finn is still the most interesting character in this new batch of films, but his whole input into this episode could be shelved and no one would miss it. There's a real easy going charm to the way he's played, but he's wasted on this occasion.

I'll all for tearing things down to build something new and fresh again and that's where this film wins its only real battle, by laying the groundwork for what's to come. Even though it's tied down to a just a few locations that really aren't that new or interesting there are still some great visuals, just nothing especially creative other than the salt covered planet Crait.

Rian Johnson not only wants to tear down and kick-start a completely new Star Wars, but he really doesn't seem to like anything that JJ Abrams brought to the table with The Force Awakens. It'll be interesting to see what Abrams does when directing the next episode.

The Last Jedi is too long, with a huge amount of yak, and the story is too thin and stretched too far. There's little that's spectacular about it
or particularly clever, and although it does have some good set pieces there's not enough to hit all the bullseyes I expect from this franchise.

After my viewing, the film left me with plenty to think about, so I went online to find critical and audience responses. What I found interested me: there was a significant disconnect between the reaction the vocal fans of the Star Wars franchise and that of the professional critics who reviewed TLJ. With few exceptions, the critical response to TLJ has been very positive. The fan’s consensus however, has been ambivalent at best. Some more outspoken among that latter camp have derided the movie as a, “Hate letter to fans,” or have posted volgs titled, “The Rot at The Core of Star Wars.” Looking into the causes of this disparity, I find that many authors posit that the longtime fanbase—predominantly white males—feel threatened by the large number of prominent women and nonwhite characters featured in the cast. While in many cases this is true, (I recall an IMDB audience review that labeled newcomer Rose as, “Positive Body Image Girl,”) I find it a shallow and dismissive theory in most cases. When I viewed Last Jedi, I saw a film that was exciting and mechanically excellent with only a handful of visual miscues. At the same time, I saw a film that is nowhere near as socially progressive and empowering as it gets credit for and it squanders every possible opportunity to depict a better, more exciting story. The Last Jedi has many good sequences and a few new good ideas but overall it is extremely inconsistent and does very little to build on any of its predecessors. It almost seems as though this movie wants the audience to just forget that the other episodes in the series happened. It offers no meaningful answers to the questions that were posed by the Force Awakens and most of the characters don't show much development. Even Luke's reasons for hiding on the island seem to contradict everything he learned in the original trilogy. The plot is full of scenarios that seem completely contrived rather than being logically justifiable. The pacing is also very jarring. Some sequences felt stretched way too long while other ones were rushed through so quickly that they seemed to condense what would have probably taken weeks into the span of a few hours. The movie also has the most ridiculously overpowered droids to date. Why the hell does anyone use human solders when droids like BB8 can take down entire squadrons? Moments like that just killed the sense of danger entirely. There are some serious dramatic moments but they were often followed by unbelievable scenes that negated their impact. The movie does have great moments and scenes though, the scene in Snoke's throne room was very good in a lot of ways but the way it ended didn't really explain anything about any of the characters. The reveal about Rey's parents wasn't just meaningless to the audience it also did nothing to explain Rey's own behavior. It felt like a mystery created for no reason besides generating fake drama and getting viewers to wonder about it. Luke's use of the Force near the end was great but once again how it ultimately ended just killed my interest in whatever happens next. Overall I was very torn on the movie, as a stand alone experience I think it is worth watching and above average but as a Star Wars movie that is supposed to develop and build upon what the previous movies did I think it fails miserably. I have seen a lot of advertising stating that the movie is full of surprises, that is true, but most of those surprises just come out of left field without any apparent depth behind them. It succeeds in being different and surprising but without really justifying itself within the established structure of the series. I really don't get the impression that Disney has a cohesive plan for the Star Wars series, it feels like they are just making it up as they go along and haven't taken the time or effort to create any sort of series bible the gives the world and story rules. This movie raises a ton of questions in terms of what can and cannot be done with the Force but I really doubt they have given much thought to it themselves. The way they use the Force seems very convenient rather than believable based on what we have learned about it over the course of the series. Some characters are able to do amazing things with the Force one moment but that makes you wonder why the hell something like that has never been done before. When Luke and Snoke use the force in new ways I can get on board with it because they are clearly powerful and have probably gained knowledge that the vast majority of Force users have not through decades of training and experience. There are other instances though such as Leia flying herself through space that seem to come out of left field and made me wonder why the hell she has never used the Force in a really noticeable way before. The scene with Force ghost Yoda also raises a lot of questions about how much Force ghosts can actually interact with the real world. One of my complaints about the movie is that while it is different it doesn't really do anything to evolve upon the questions of the last few movies. For example, we don't learn anything meaningful about the First Order, we don't learn anything meaningful about what happened to society after the fall of the Empire, we don't learn anything meaningful about Snoke, where he came from, how he seized control of the First Order, or how he was able to influence Kylo Ren from afar. Snoke has done things that even the Emperor could not but we still have no explanation for why. We don't learn anything meaningful about Rey's past, we learn that her parents were apparently just randoms which has no meaningful impact on the story. In terms of why she is so powerful with the Force or what her vision was about. The movie does offer some interesting new ideas. The Force connection between Rey and Kylo was an interesting development which has a lot of story potential. It added some complexity to how the Force can be used. Luke's astral projecting with the Force was also a very interesting idea and it was used to good dramatic affect within the movie. Snoke's use of the Force was cool and felt reasonable for a Force user who is supposed to be in a class above the rest. How those ideas develop in the next movie will be the true test of their substance though. Expand

Articles, interviews, reviews, recaps and so on invite you to treat every movie as a major cultural milestone or religious experience. What they are is fairly okay big budget action movies. If you liked the Force Awakens you'll like this pretty much sums it up. If you're looking for a bold new direction you're out of luck. The movie holds a few surprises but it all feels pretty safe without getting too wacky or sentimental.

The best part is the visuals, there are several big fights that we're crazy cool. I like the mix of CGI and practical effects, with only a handful of cringe worthy CGI characters. The acting is pretty good, with much improved performances by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver who each seemed to have found the grove with their charters. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are stand outs with very moving turns as their classic characters. All this is done with the burden of what is easily the most disappointing part of the movie, the story. Where to start, well if you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica this might seem very familiar. I won't get into spoilers, just keep that in mind if you go see this. I will say it's all a mess. Things happen out of nowhere, nothing feels earned or happened with any kind of logical story progression in mind. The landscape of what's going on is very muddy and this wouldn't be an issue if the movie didn't try and make you feel like it was so important. Character motivation is unbelievable at best, everyone just does things cause they're cool, the movie in a strange self aware moment even points this out. I did really like some of the commentary on war itself, who really fights wars and who really benefits. It's a bold stand, especially in such a high budget people pleaser of a movie. I hope we see more of this in future movies. This all comes down to if you like Star Wars and the modren Star Wars movies so far you're going to like this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah, they need to drop Rian Johnson. His writing has ruined Luke Skywalker, made the whole movie filled with plot holes, casino scene dragged on, Finn and Rose's relationship had worse chemistry than Anakin and Padme, turned Leia into superman when she went into outer space, completely sodomized fan theories about Rei's origin, Snoke didn't even get that much of a spotlight, and finally, Phasma was still useless.

What the movie does right; All of the fight scenes, space battles, jokes (the one's that are actually funny), and the final fight on Crait.

I won't say what precipitated it as to avoid spoilers. JJ may have parroted the original trilogy to a fault, but it worked. This one skirted around the edgers--but missed the mark. Last Jedi is certainly a polarized movie at different levels, I am bit surprised that critics gave such an excellent rate, perhaps they don’t like to criticize or diminish the quality of Disney’s work by some mysterious reasons. I feel that if you want a heroine to be the star of this movie perhaps Disney can consider a female director that would be more in tune with Rey’s character like Patty Jenkis did for Wonder Woman. When you make a movie, the decisions are yours to make so I can't argue with any direction the writing team have decided to take regarding the characters BUT...

It has to make sense! Decisions need to be earned or explained. Say what you want about the prequels, they had a lot of problems, but the overall story made sense. The Last Jedi's main plot is the worst Star Wars story ever told. It wouldn't even make a bad Clone Wars episode. At least 30 minutes of this movie is dedicated to a weird, useless subplot. In a 2h30min, this time would've been better invested in making characters richer and deeper and taking the time to investigate their motivations.

Adam Driver's Kylo Ren is the only redeeming factor in this movie and the only main character who's motivations make sense.

All and all, this isn't a terrible movie. It's a fun movie with bad lazy writing. Star Wars deserves better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not my Star Wars... Still, a good film for the new generation.

I liked: Yoda!, the Kylo/Rey duo fight scene, the sunset scene and the awesome soundtrack.

I disliked: almost everything else, poor dialogue, convoluted story with unnecessary subplots, god-awful "dad humor".

They had the chance to make this a really strong, dark movie, but they decided to go just full Disney.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was OK but way too long (it's more a 5.5 for me) ! The whole "casino planet" scene should have been cut It just didn't bring anything to the story. Ask yourself: if the scene wasn't in the movie, will it change the story ? The answer is no. I think that scene was made only to plug Benicio del Toro character in the movie because the studio said: - Guys, we have Benicio del Toro for the next Star Wars movie you have to find a way to put him in the movie.
- But he's irrelevant to the plot.
- Don't care ! We have Benicio del effing Toro for Star Wars find a way !
So they create the whole casino mission for that purpose... at least, that's how it felt since this whole part of the movie is completely meaningless. Then there's Rose... wow. She just need to go for the next movie, like kill or severely injured her in a battle after the opening credits so she won't be able to intervene in anyway, whatsoever, in the story. Just felt like they forced the character on the public and it didn't connect. Ok, now there's those little hamster-owl thingies... obviously a cash grab for movie merchandise. Again, they didn't bring ANYTHING to the movie, the only serve as a marketing tool for their plush toys. I see you coming: but they were Ewoks, rancor monster or wampas in other Star Wars movies, but they served a purpose to the story: Ewoks played a key role in the battle of Endor, the rancor led to the Sarlacc pit battle where the gang is reunited and Luke use his force power for the first time in the wampa cave and encountered Obi-Wan ghost outside.
I won't give a failing mark for the Last Jedi it's still an ok movie. Remove Rose and the Casino planet subplot and I'll give it a 8 easily. Rey and Kylo teaming up against Snoke Preatorian guards is awesome, Luke's final battle, the questioning around the role of Jedi and the debate surrounding them etc. Excellent musical score, like always and great visual effects to support the Star Wars universe. I have a question though: what the hell happened to the Y-Wing bombers ? I think they would have made a better job than the extremely slow and shieldless bombers (whose gunners are quite incompetent from what I saw) from that movie don't you think ? Anyway, the Last Jedi is far from being a great Star Wars movie. Let's hope Disney learned from those mistakes for Episode IX, because the Star Wars universe deserve way better and has a lot more potential than that.

PS: English is a second language to me, so they might be a lot of typos in that review.

NO SPOILER REVIEW

First off, I think this film needs to be judged on two merits; one being a film made to entertain and the other being a Star Wars film made to continue an established narrative. This is where the divide is created between the two audiences and why the disparity of reviews exists.

Judging the film as a product, purely to entertain and turn a profit for the studio; The Last Jedi couldn't have done a better job (it is Disney after all). However, as a Star Wars film that continues it's now epic saga; it falls rather flat on its face.

AS A STAND ALONE FILM: 7/10

The Last Jedi presents a serviceable plot with interesting and memorable characters, be it for their personalities, striking designs or otherwise memorable quips and development throughout the film. The cinematography is stunning at times and can command your attention effortlessly; which should not come as a surprise from a huge budget production. The cast also delivers some fantastic performances, such as Adam Drivers role of Kylo Ren and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker to name a couple.

The writing however, feels conflicted at times, with the film struggling to be decisive about what genre it wants to be; with some displays of awkward comedy, as if to appeal to an audience with little attention spans. It's cheesy, feeling like a parody or comedy sketch at times that overstays it's welcome. That aside, the plot is coherent but isn't afraid to deviate to challenge the audience and defy predictions; it keeps things rolling and builds tension. The characters for the most part, felt genuine and had clear priorities and goals, all done without lengthy exposition that interrupts the main plot; although it is worth noting that the sub-plot to this film is an inverse of that statement, ultimately being shallow and a clear case of raising social awareness with barely any subtlety involved; leaving the impression that the audience is unable to decipher hidden meanings and nods to real world conflicts/issues.

Overall, The Last Jedi is a solid film that can entertain and appeal to a wide audience; with stunning visuals and great performances held together by a captivating narrative.

AS A STAR WARS FILM 3/10

If you want to know my credibility, I grew up on the original movies and have seen the prequels as well as the animated "Clones Wars" TV show and was an avid player of Star Wars Battlefront (the PS2 versions (the good ones)) I'm not a rabid fan, but I respect the series and enjoy what it offers. This film, however, is easily the worst and I don't think many should be surprised, even compared to Episode VII and Rouge One.

It's a mess of in your face politics, pretty lights and colors and of course; marketable cute background props. Episode VII wanted to reinvent classic Star Wars for the modern era, whereas Episode VIII wants to sweep it all under the rug. "Let the past die, kill it if you have to" -Kylo Ren, TLJ Trailer. It's an obvious middle finger to the fans of the franchise and from an artistic point of view, it's murder suicide. The political side, ruins the film and has no place in a "science FICTION" production; and I've heard the "feminist propaganda" label being thrown at this movie, but in all honesty I liked Rae. Seeing women as leads in huge productions is a nice change; just very disappointing that they are done with so low effort and can be forced to meet a diversity quota. Again, REAL world politics has no place in a FICTIONAL world people look to, to escape reality. The plot makes little sense when previous installments are factored in. (Minor spoilers ahead) The First Order from Episode VII are here, but for some reason are stronger and more powerful, which makes no sense; as the empire were fractured after Episode VI and then the first order rose from the ashes and got king hit in Episode VII but yet STILL out number and out gun the "resistance" by Episode VIII. At this rate, the First Order/Empire may as well be that kid on the playground that always had a trump card for everything during imaginary play time.

Then there's Luke Skywalker who has transitioned between films (off screen mind you) into the very opposite of his original character; Rae may as well have not even trained to be a Jedi since she's essentially a Jedi master after a couple of on screen minutes of training and Leia, well, you'll just have to see the movie. Meanwhile the rest of the cast are ultimately throwaways bar Kylo Ren who is more or less the same as he was in Episode VIII.

As a Star Wars film, it feels like a compilation of Saturday Night Live sketches and fan fiction that tries so hard to go against the norm to be original but forgets that "new" does not always equal "good".

Overall, disappointing and a deterant to see any future Star Wars films

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although it wasn't necessarily a bad movie, it falls severely low of expectations in terms of writing. The movie is riddled with plot holes or stupidity that detract from its overall authenticity, such as when Admiral Holdo decides to not tell Poe her plan for no apparent reason, causing him to mutiny. A 1/3 of the movie rested on this one plot point, making it seem a bit stupid. Some characters, such as Admiral Holdo, were superfluous, as she just sacrifices herself by ramming the First Order's command ship. This felt forced and unnatural, as it feels like this could have been done with an autopilot, making the movie less enjoyable. This could have also been done by a more established character, such as Admiral Ackbar, as this would have had a deeper emotional impact on the audience, as Holdo wasn't around long enough and didn't do anything to gain the audience's sympathy.

The movie also inserts political themes, such as animal cruelty and the arms trade, crudely, by simply stating them as wrong instead of showing their negative effects and letting the audience draw their own conclusions, such as in the Casino scene on Canto Bight. This destroys any tension that had previously been built up and breaks the pace of the movie, making it much less enjoyable to watch.

Many people were upset about the revelation that Rey's parents were scavengers. Although I personally think this sent a good message and made the Star Wars universe feel less small, the writers break the principle of Chekhov's gun, as Rey's lineage was repeatedly hinted as being significant in TFA. This makes the reveal unsatisfying for the audience. Philosophically, the way the Force was implemented was flawed. The movie stated that as one side of the Force grows stronger, the other will automatically grow with it, which is the reason given for why Rey is so powerful. This means that, ultimately, nothing any of the characters do matters, as the Force will simply empower the opposite side to balance itself out, removing any significance any individual’s actions have. This also raises the question of whether any of the characters have any real free will, as the Force is using them to be in equilibrium. This removes any weight from Rey’s or Kylo’s decisions, as it is implied that this is the Force’s will, so it is inevitable.

All in all, the Last Jedi could have been worse, but the story and the themes it was exploring were deeply flawed in both concept and execution.

Everything about them in this movie is perfect to me. I loved how Luke walks a thin line between good and evil. Grey area is something you don't see in Star Wars and it was great so that being the link between Kylo and Rey was something that I thought was very interesting. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite of the sequel trilogy... it isn't the best of course and the it is a bit of a mess. Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars was an interesting one. The characters are mostly okay, but Vice-Admiral Holdo was such a **** that assumed she knew who Poe was just by one event made me want to stab her. Rose Tico was a character I liked at first, but then I realized she didn't save the slave kids on Canto Bight and instead only freed the animals. Why didn't Finn do anything about the enslaved kids? Finn feels like a guy who would have freed them, considering his background. However, though some scenes don't make scientific sense, it's still Star Wars and it was fun for me to watch. General Hux is a stupid sand bag though. I liked Kylo Ren and his scene where he destroyed the mask. Adam Driver portrays Kylo very well and Kylo's dialogue always feel good to me. The Rise of Skywalker having Kylo Ren have his mask again didn't make sense to me because in this movie he makes a huge point that he outgrew it. Anyway, Luke Skywalker... I was fine with how he was in the movie and I thought it made sense. Mark Hamill did an amazing job and his scene with Yoda made me happy. I know the fight scenes weren't super good, but I still really liked them. I wish more questions were answered in this movie, but it was what it was. I liked it. Expand

Yes, the movie has plot holes, yes it makes you suspend your disbelief too many times, I myself can even say I had some issues with it as I walked out of the theater and my nitpicks kept going on the next day. But overall, I was more than satisfied with what I got: a thrilling Star Wars movie that never has a dull moment.

In the group of friends I went to see this with, one of them had only seen a few Star Wars movies fully in her life, but her favorite character of the saga is Jar Jar Binks. Freaking Jar Jar! But she absolutely enjoyed The Last Jedi. That’s right: a non-fan thought the movie being mercilessly attacked by its most committed followers was great. If you ask me, I say that’s proof enough that Star Wars: The Last Jedi succeeds all it intended to accomplish.

First off, the bad. The amount of humor put in throughout the movie is way too excessive. The Force Awakens, pulled off some phenomenal humor but still knew when to be serious. This time around, the jokes are constant, even hurting the most touching moments with a quick snarky one-liner. It certainly succeeded in making me laugh quite a lot, but the already emotionally powerful story could have been so much greater without the Porgs.

With the characters themselves, their arcs are not as fully realized as they could have been. Finn’s arc could have been so effective here like how it was in The Force Awakens, but instead he’s pretty much just there to exist and move the plot along. He shares a weak romantic subplot with a new character, a young, eager member of the Resistance named Rose, who’s just there really to deliver the message in the end.

Then there are the other old flaws of the entire Star Wars franchise, such as expositiony dialogue, but newer flaws are unique to just this movie. One scene features a new world that looks like a steampunk Great Gatsby with a casino setting that feels very out of place for Star Wars, it’s literally another Cantina scene. So basically, I understand the hate from old fans: it’s difference in style alters what’s already established. But different is good! With everything this movie does wrong, there’s just as much, possibly more, that it does right!

First of all, the look to the film is gritty yet stellar. The casino looks lavish with spice while the space battles above the civil life bombards with grand explosions. The world of Ahch-To is absolutely gorgeous with its design of the strange life that lives there. It always seems to rain there, even when it isn’t, which complements the condition of Luke’s damp relationship with the force. A new planet with a crystalline design holds the base for the final battle, and it’s a visual splendor to watch as the ships glide over a vast salt bed over red dust. Beneath the surface of this planet, a space battle takes itself down under through a crimson geode. Even in the throne room of Supreme Leader Snoke, pure red overpowers the screen.

The much more intimate moments had so many moments when I held my breath in shock and anticipation, questioning what will happen. What helps is not just the question as to who Rey’s parents are or stuff like that, but the kinesthetic relationships with some of the more prevalent characters. While some of the character relationships needed work, others, such as the force sensitive bond between Rey and Kylo Ren, were mesmerizing to watch. You even get to see a bit more of Finn’s arc with Captain Phasma fulfilled in one awesome piece of combat! There are plenty of other lightsaber duels and battle sequences that are filled with fun moments and epic choreography.

I particularly like how Kylo Ren is far more complex than the typical bad guy, and you can see past his emo hair to empathize with the corrupted, scared little child he truly is. Rey’s little training sessions, as few as they are, also command your attention as Luke observes what she already knows, and how he in turn learns from her, a classic mentorship bond.

So guys, stop setting such unrealistically high expectations for Star Wars. All the flaws about this movie, as viable as they are, are not new to the entire Star Wars series. With all the fan theories and expanded universe that try to add ownership to the fictional world, we forgot one thing about this property we’ve now gotten so serious about: watching Star Wars is supposed to be fun! That’s what I did with my friends on Thursday night, we went to have a good time and we got it. I’m not usually one to tolerate talking during a movie, but I was sharing little verbal exchanges with my friend I was sitting next to while watching the movie, and we all cheered and laughed with the rest of the crowd. The result, we had a fun, memorable night that made my friend’s 25th birthday very special. So long story short, stop getting so worked up, have some fun!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this movie doesn't deserve a 1 or 3 like some butthurt fanboys are giving. It has really bad moments but there are also breathtaking scenes, both direction-wise as fan service wise.

The reason why I didn’t like TLD that much: the movie basically said f*ck you to everything that episode VII and JJ Abrams was setting up.
Rey is a nobody, so what was the point of the force vision in TFA, why should I care about her? Snoke’s plot was a big thing for me. He had SO MUCH potential, if Rian Johnson cut the crappiest part of the movie (act 2 in that casino-like planet and that PETA bs with the Chinese Jar Jar) and gave us a flashback showing Snoke’s past, who is he, how he recruited Kylo and made him go to the Dark Side, why was he so powerful, how he build the First Order from the reminiscents of the Empire. WE GOT NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING. They killed Snoke in his second REAL appaearance in both episodes VII and VIII. Come on guys! You have **** Andy Serkis, a true legend and that’s all we got? Really? It seemed like Rian just wanted to clean up all of JJ Abrams work in TFA. It was a huge disappointment.
Now all I see is a very predictable plot in ep XIX. To be honest, I really don’t see that much material left to work with.
TLJ was a huge mess with some very good moments, like Yoda’s appearance, Luke’s last moment, the space battles, Poe’s character development, Rey’s relation with Luke, the cinemaography, this is hands down a gorgeous movie, and the best looking Star Wars. it introduces poorly developed characters that have no story at all instead of focusing on the characters TFA already established and needed further development (Snoke, Mas, Phasma, Hux, etc.). Instead of that horrible casino sequence, instead of Rose and DJ, why not try to develop more characters Rian already had? I would have love to see Mas’s story, her place in all of this, how she found Luke’s lightsaber. Phasma’s presence, once again, was useless.
Commander Holdo was a very good addition to the Star Wars movies, she was incredibly charismatic and I could perfectly see her replacing Leia’s post in ep XIX, being the leader that the Resistance needed so much and honoring Carrie Fisher’s legacy, but no, they killed her right away.

I got out of the session with mixed feelings, and I still need to rewatch it for a second time, but this is my opinion for now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi was enjoyable on the surface, but like the previous episode it is full of huge plot coincidences, emotional misdirects, and masking humor. More fans are noticing this time and not giving it a pass. Disney has changed the philosophy of Star Wars which used to embrace a deep history and they are changing where the good guys and the bad guys want nothing to do with the past; they burn it down, run from it and diminish the old to prop up the new characters. The past is inconvenient to the movies because they do not know how to connect it to the present, and the movie does not want to bother with the past. And they want so badly to create their own Darth Vader, and give birth to the most powerful Jedi ever, they will pull everything down to force it to work. Star Wars fans want the history to be respected, understood, with some consistency of power and limits. The biggest complaint about the Last Jedi is many scenes and actions are reversed immediately; they constantly make someone die then not, or the hate someone then not, or turn dark then not. The movie is trying to be super tricky, as if to leave the door open for any possibility for any character. Therefore everyone is bipolar, except for Snoke he just was evil but wasted quickly. There should be no redemption for Kylo, but they probably will. Rey shows a lot of violent anger, and is open to the dark, but no she will be some super powerful grey jedi. I did enjoy Kylo and Rey fighting together but that also was reversed. Although I sort of enjoyed parts of the Last Jedi, the story leaves us with little; a small rebel group, like one First Order ship, and a war of no consequence. Luke was found after the whole first movie, but little pay off to the story. I am still hoping for some pay-off to show that the story was CRAFTED for more than a scene by scene basis, but it will be tough to write out of the corner they painted themselves into. I bet the next movie will take place years in the future, they will write out Leia, and that kid with the ring at the end will lead a new rebellion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no denying that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is one of the most hyped up movies of 2017, but there were several questions leading into it that many fans had. How would the change of directors affect the story? Would the film crew be able to adapt to Carrie Fisher's unexpected passing? Most of all, would episode 8 live up to the high expectations? Star Wars: The Last Jedi takes a lot of bold steps, sometimes not in the most clear direction. The movie essentially has two separate plots: one with Rey meeting the legendary Luke Skywalker, and the other featuring the Resistance as they attempt to evade the First Order yet again. One of the main problems lies in that the secondary plot with the Resistance has serious pacing issues, and does not seem be as satisfying as the moments we spend with Rey and Luke. I say satisfying because the entire point of the secondary plot with Finn and a new character, Rose, seems to have very little payoff, and is almost pointless with the exception of the last scene of the film. Their goal was to find a way to evade the First Order, and it ended up failing anyway. Rey and Luke is far more interesting, and it is great to see the chemistry between the characters, but the humor between them feels forced at times. The same humor incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes back in The Last Jedi, and oftentimes it does not work. Must be a Disney thing. John Williams returns to compose the music for the film, and he does as great as ever. This might be one of the best sounding Star Wars films, and quite easily the best looking. The CGI and the cinematography are breathtaking.

Adam Driver reprises his role as Kylo Ren, and once again does a fantastic job. While fans seem to be split on whether or not Kylo is a strong villain, I believe he is one of the most compelling characters in all of the Star Wars movies. During the scenes where Kylo and Rey come into contact, physically or via some force projection, they steal the show. What I really liked with The Last Jedi is the departure from the conventional light versus dark side themes; instead, both Rey and Kylo experience inner turmoil as they grapple with what they believe is the right path. The psychological battles that both characters undergo are as intense as they are thematic. Kylo's relationship with Luke proves to be equally as intriguing, and learning about their backstory and how it led into the events of The Last Jedi further turned those conventional themes on their heads.

One of the most mysterious characters in the last film was Supreme Leader Snoke, and we finally get to see a physical character of him. Snoke is easily one of the most intriguing characters in the film. Unfortunately, we do not get to see much of him in the film, and after seeing the movie, we are unlikely to see any more of him, for better or worse. I understand the thought process behind Rian Johnson's decision regarding Snoke because it means we will see more of Kylo, but it all felt abrupt how they handled it. Another major character that was handled questionably was Princess Leia, who dies during a space battle, but returns to life by the force. Those who have paid attention during the previous Star Wars films knows Leia has a connection to the force through the Skywalker bloodline, but I do not understand why they brought her back considering the fact that Carrie Fisher passed away, and it has been stated that she will not be in the next movie at all. The only silver lining is we are treated to a reunion between Luke and Leia before the final battle, but even that could have been done in a different way somehow. Once the stories of Rey and the Resistance start to link up, the movie does pick up considerably, and the climax is coming up. Well, that is not entirely true. The movie still has about an hour to go, which is not a good sign for a movie being told concisely and put together well. I thought the movie had ended multiple times, but it kept going. The entire movie does feel messy, and while I love more Star Wars, I do not like a movie that has a lacking identity. Here I think lies the movie's biggest flaw: it tried to do a lot while really doing nothing. The movie could be cut considerably and it would still tell the same story essentially. There are some awkward moments, times where character rationales do not make a lot of sense, questionable decisions with major characters, and pacing issues, but overall these little problems are under the umbrella of the movie not being as concise as it should have been. A lot of the movie feels like filler, which means more Star Wars, but a worse movie.

Overall, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is an entertaining movie, but whether or not it is a "good" movie remains in question. This film will definitely leave fans debating and complaining. It seems that a lot of potential was unfulfilled, and I left the theater mildly satisfied. Now it is time to countdown to episode 9.

The sequel trilogy plot as a whole is ruined now due to Carrie Fisher's death and the decision to leave the movie exactly the same after her death will further compound the issue for Episode IX. It was quite disappointing as a whole and has led me to truly treat Disney-Wars as the fanfiction that it is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not a masterpiece. It's also not "destroying the franchise". The binary masses will not be swayed by this review either way, so I will not bother catering to them.

In my opinion there are a handful of breathtakingly fresh moments that scream the spectacle that Star Wars deserves. There is also a handful of goofy (I'm looking at you Leia), and unnecessary (I'm pretty sure the movie just cuts to an in-production James Bond movie half-way through) that serve little to no purpose in this story. Finn did not need to be in this story. That's basically a fact at this point. The movie was grasping trying to find something for him to do and the writers were too scared of simply not having Finn in this movie at all. That is what I feel is the weakest part of this film. It tries to appease everyone and loses focus as a result.

That being said, I think Po and Rey/Kylo's stories were great, and the high points of this movie were definitely worth the watch. Save Finn for his own movie and you got something special on your hands, but as it stands I would liken it to about Revenge of the Sith levels.

Star Wars Episode VIII is by some strange power on level with the prequels. While the reason for this isn't related to bad cgi or annoying characters there are still plenty of moments that lead to this film's downfall. The side stories,Star Wars Episode VIII is by some strange power on level with the prequels. While the reason for this isn't related to bad cgi or annoying characters there are still plenty of moments that lead to this film's downfall. The side stories, pacing and run time all lead to a horrid abomination of a film that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the viewer.

Most of the plot of the movie can be summarized in a few sentences. This is why the plot mostly revolves around side stories to pat the run time and add depth to the story. However Episode VIII creates these side stories in the worst way possible. Multiple sub plots in the movie lead to barely any actual effect in the story. Compared to previous films in the series where side plots are introduced these sub stories while intercepting never lead anywhere.

The second gripe I have with the movie is it's pacing and flow. When creating a story the plot needs to follow the basic formula. Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Conclusion. The flow of this movie feels more along the lines of Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Climax, Falling Action, Climax, Conclusion. Overall The plot feels very misguided and leads into the worst part of the movie; the length.

Star Wars Episode VIII has the longest running time out of any Star Wars. At first this isn't so bad I mean hey long doesn't always mean bad just like how short doesn't mean rushed. But The Last Jedi is not long for the right reasons. The show feels like it's trying to fit in much more than it needs. It feels like the director is in a game where he has to give his work to another writer after 10 minutes. Eventually he has 1 minute left and scrambles to fit all of his remaining ideas left even though the story could have wrapped up 3 minutes ago. Overall the movie is very rushed and leaves you feeling like you just want it to end.

Now while all I've done so far is bash Episode VIII the movie is still fun; sometimes. The few fight scenes are entertaining. The jokes while mostly falling short are sometimes funny. And a few cgi creatures actually look appealing to the eye. The movie isn't the worst of 2017. By no means it's not even a bad movie it's just OK. Now don't get me wrong it's not one of those inoffensive movies that doesn't add or take away anything; far from it. Star Wars Episode VIII is extremely offensive at times but the action and plot changes spliced throughout the story keep it from dawning the rank of bad.

Including the prequels, despite the horrendous plot and dialogue. This film really dares me to consider continuing with the franchise anymore. From a plot that could've been avoided if the characters had talked to each other, to the sad portrayal and even slightly immature version of Luke. There is a lot to hate about it yes, but in order for this to be a proper review, I must bring up the good sides of the story. I did enjoy the cinematography on Crait and a very special scene between Luke and an 'Old Friend'.
Overall this film has a lot to fix and JJ is directing the next film so I say 'JJ, You're our only hope'.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion the Force Awakens was a safe and lazy attempt at pleasing fans who were still bitter over the prequels. The director of The Last Jedi had to take a pretty horrible start to the trilogy and try to make it fresh and interesting for this movie. While he does succeed at shaking things up, this movie is very jarring to watch. New ideas are introduced and then thrown away. There were two MAJOR questions brought up in the Force Awakens that are literally answered with bad jokes in this movie. As if to say **** you to the fan theorists out there. One of the new characters is completely useless, Finn is reduced to a secondary character with no purpose at all. And don't get me started on the subplots... the subplots are insanely frustrating to watch. They have no purpose, no real outcome and much of the movie is illogical. The only redeeming story lines are Rey and Kylo's relationship as well as Luke's introduction into his beliefs of the force. Other than that, the movie is paced and edited badly and there are MANY plotholes.

All that being said, the movie has some amazing visuals and cinematography. It probably has one of the best scenes in Star Wars history, and the ending is surprisingly cool and fun to watch. If you want to see some new ideas in the Star Wars universe, you got it, but dont be fooled. This film has some major issues (again mainly with pace and editing), but its better than the Force Awakens... by a longshot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't believe so many fans loved it, it felt like they were trolling original trilogy (and even Force Awakens) fans to me. The way they treated old characters, Ackbar, R2, and even Luke felt deliberately disrespectful. The whole movie felt like a big middle finger to me. Do you like Ackbar? Too bad, here's some random edgy woman with purple hair for no apparent reason. Oh, and apparently we can lightspeed into other ships now? Why didn't that ever happen in the older movies? Also, why does Luke want to murder his nephew when he wanted to risk everything to save his father for the same reasons?

Even if you can look past those things as a general movie goer, I just can't see how this movie constitutes an objectively good movie (other than on a purely superficial level only). I understand that some Star Wars movies had plot holes but this movie was literally riddled with obvious ones that broke the immersion for me. We can't kill ships from behind now (#Whathappenedtotiefighters and #thebigasscanontheyhadoncrate)? Why didn't Holdo tell Po her plans? Why didn't Po know who Holdo even was? Why bother have Benicio del Toro rat out the rebels plans when Snoke can literally see the transports out his window? Why did Benicio del Toro wait until Finn/Rose arrived to break out of prison? Why was Po able to single-handedly disable all of the dreadnaught's weaponry before they launched tie fighters? Everything done in this movie was done for short term entertainment value at the cost of consistency. Plot twists, plot twists, plot twists! You didn't predict anything coming, that means we're good at making a story! What they forget is that consistency, namely the rules of "what's possible," and trust are very important in a fantasy setting. Consistently trick me and eventually actions and their consequences will lose all meaning. Let magic like the force, ship shielding, or lightspeed(or whatever sci-fi elements available) do things they've never done before and you essentially push the limits of the pre-established rules of the Star Wars universe. Stretch those rules too much and eventually it may feel like actions have unrelated consequences, it allows for writers/directors to pretty much do whatever they want with great convenience. The audience starts to see a pattern of "anything goes" ala Harry Potter style and suddenly you find the director/writers scrambling to write themselves OUT of the corner they wrote themselves into. Each power given in one scene for convenience may need to be taken out of another scene - for convenience. If a character becomes too powerful you may have to find ways to counteract their powers: you can't trap a character that can teleport unless you come up with some convenient plot device that suddenly stops the character from teleporting. And that's the problem with The Last Jedi- it establishes technology and powers that invalidate the rules already established (ex: why didn't they use lightspeed on the death star). You can't have a ship lightspeeding through whole fleets- it's too powerful and will need to be written out of episode 9 by some counter technology. Every time they come up with a new outrageous power/tech it stretches our suspension of disbelief. It may be fantasy/sci-fi but it still needs rules to be taken seriously.

Anyways, if those things weren't bad enough, the overall story is just poor. The 2 hours of running out of gas and failed subplots of Finn and Rose amounted to a story pretty much about running. What's the message? **** happens and sometimes you do more harm than good? Unless you're Rey of course, you can't do any wrong even when handing yourself to your enemy. Also, everyone hates the rebels and you have absolutely no friends to help you out. How small is this galaxy exactly? Oh yeah, blowing up 5 planets in Force Awakens isn't grounds for a rebellion but Luke becoming a "legend" by astral projecting is enough to rally the children? Sounds like every heroic action in these movies is pointless unless you're a jedi. Also, from Finn's and Po's perspective, they've literally done more harm than good and maybe they shouldn't have even tried at all. There's some lessons to be learned but the movie is confused in conveying it. Reprimand Po for his impulsiveness but then cheer him on later for the same traits. Have Finn waste time looking for a hacker and fight off against his nemesis only to get thousands of people killed. Oh, and apparently rebels are as bad as the First Order because they buy weapons from the same people.

Almost all my questions from The Force awakens have been answered, and I'm glad for that, but I feel the film is TOO LONG, and there are TOO MANY characters, just like in the Avengers movies, and some of them are disappointing as a result. Despite the action scenes are great, in the first place I feel like there are plotlines that are unnecessary and only make the movie longer, but i'll wait and see how it translates in the third movie. I have also missed some more lightsaber battles, which I hope reappear in episode IX, and a better character developement and death selection. It raises new questions for the last movie of the trilogy and I can't wait to watch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say: I was disappointed. This movie manages to stand a bit more on its own than The Force Awakens or Rogue One, but it still riffs pretty heavily on the old trilogy's story beats, and is a mixed bag in terms of characters, story choices, and tone. That last part might be the biggest problem. It pulls a Marvel at times and undercuts serious or important moments with ill-timed humor. The movie does little to develop Finn despite plenty of screen time, and Captain Phasma and Snoke are as lame as ever. Good riddance to both. Kylo Ren is still a compelling villain, and his and Rey's story is the highlight. I think Johnson missed the mark on the character of Luke pretty significantly, making him inconsistent with who he became after ROTJ, and forcing him to arbitrarily backpedal as a character, just to bring him back toward heroism in the end so the movie can pretend he has a story arc. The Last Jedi is less slavish in its callbacks to previous movies than The Force Awakens was, but what this lays bare is that the new stuff has comparatively little to offer, from the world building to the young male leads, to the incredibly corny new character Rose, to the action (awesome throne room fight aside). The movie's latter sections get slightly more interesting than its borderline-boring first half, but I had hoped to be much more impressed by Rian Johnson's take on the Star Wars galaxy than this. Firstly, apologies for the giant paragraph - for some reason it's not registering them when I submit the review.

The Last Jedi introduces several interesting themes and perspectives essential for the franchise to evolve beyond the nostalgia bubble it's trapped in. However, they are poorly implemented resulting in pacing issues, exposition dumps and an abusive reliance on subversion to convey character arcs. In short, the script feels like an A-Ha! moment that wasn't given the time it needed for refinement. The use of subversion is so pervasive that one may feel they are watching a critique on the franchise rather than a fictional narrative. It perhaps needed to be divided amongst the three films to ease viewers into the change. The reaction amongst most fans seems to be in line with the film's core message however, so perhaps it's a masterpiece from that perspective but certainly not from a cinematic point of view. There are some highlights, mainly through the action sequences and the actors do their best with what's written, except when considering comedy. The humour is akin to a late show skit when actors parody their characters through modern day vernacular and real-life scenarios. It regularly broke my immersion and what's worse was poorly edited, often dragging well beyond the non-existent punchlines. Overall, it exposed a dearth of comedic nous from the creators and wasn't in line with usual Star Wars sense of humour which is one aspect that didn't need an overhaul. I write as a lover of film, not Star Wars. I enjoy most of the franchise and I've seen every entry yet am unconcerned if I ever see them again. I am disappointed with this latest entry because it showed potential but didn't know how to treat it. Apart from one scene in the Third Act that stirred me, I was bored. That said, if you like to be taken out of your comfort zone and are unconcerned about what does or does not make good cinema then you may find something to value from The Last Jedi. It's not a terrible film, but as I've stated it's certainly not the best version of itself it could've been; great ideas, sub-par execution.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thank goodness for user reviews.....because when I saw what a high score the critics gave the film and I left the film a bit bewildered, I wondered if maybe I was just having a bad day? Such a relief that many, many others share my sense of disappointment.
To start with, I'm 42. I went to cinema to watch Return of the Jedi when I was 9. I couldn't wait to see Luke Skywalker return from the wilderness to once again kick the Dark side's arse! However It seems that Disney is more interested in promoting the new characters, making Star Wars an advert for toys and cheap laughs. Firstly there are some incredible scenes in this film but not a lot of originality. It seems that a formula has been found. Credit for the casino scene but it didn't really work and felt more like Harry Potter. I was impressed by the realism in Snook's CGI but he came across as not remotely evil and pathetic in turns of a baddie. The irritating Porg birds were cute at first but then became as irritating as Jar Jar Binks and was an obvious ploy for Disney to sell merchandise. Then Luke Skywalker, where do I begin? One moment he's totally against helping Rey but it doesn't take much for him to change his mind. The best moment in the film is when he seems to be totally destroyed and emerges unscathed then follows a Matrix-style duck and an ever-so familiar Ben Kenobi death. I don't think I'll be in the minority of fans who wanted so much to see him kick ass, now it seems he's going to be a harmless ghost? That left me feeling totally deflated. Yes I know he's old now but he's LUKE SKYWALKER for Christ's sake! Surely he is the biggest character in the whole franchise? Many of newcomers will love the new film but for the old fogies like me, it wasn't terrible but left me walking out of cinema wondering why??? And all I can see is dollar signs for Disney.

Well lads it's finally here, that magical time of the year where Star Wars has finally graced our cinema screens yet again. There's nothing quite like the feeling of sitting in a dark cinema with that pause after "A long time ago in a galaxyWell lads it's finally here, that magical time of the year where Star Wars has finally graced our cinema screens yet again. There's nothing quite like the feeling of sitting in a dark cinema with that pause after "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." when that glorious music starts and the title screen appears.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is like getting repeatedly hit in the face with nostalgia, but if you thought the Porgs were the biggest concern well think again. Picking up almost immediately from The Force Awakens. For the most part The Last Jedi feels strongly like a combination of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With a few twists and turns and a not so lovely section in the middle that felt like it came straight out of George Lucas's imagination. This is the 8th Star Wars movie now (no Rogue One you don't count) so they had to up the stakes and it won't let you down in that area. It's good, I liked it but I didn't love it. The Last Jedi feels like it's missing something, the wow factor. This new trilogy might have peaked at The Force Awakens, but if it helps The Last Jedi is better than all the prequels and Rogue One combined.

Every single actor is giving it their all and loving every minute of it. Carrie Fisher is magnificent and there is no way you would want to miss her final performance as Leia Organa. Domhnall Gleeson gave another chilling performance as General Hux. Adam Driver took his character to another level I didn't even think he had. Sure you have your general clichés and humour thrown into the script but that's to be expected. Amazingly for all the time that has passed in the life of Luke Skywalker he is the exact same as he was when we last saw him onscreen. Any apparent character development is non-existent. He's still the same whiny annoyance he was in the original Star Wars trilogy, the only thing that's changed is his age. The beginning and the end is the best thing about The Last Jedi, but I could have done without all that stuff in the middle about finding your true self with scenes reminiscent of the Never Ending Story. It kills the story dead and upset the pace set in the opening scenes. Maybe if it had lost 20 minutes and made the scenes with Luke just a little more interesting I might have loved it, or at least put it on the same level as The Force Awakens.

It answers the questions asked in The Force Awakens. The visual effects and the ultra creative lightsaber fights will make your inner fanboy go crazy. It's a Star Wars movie you can enjoy so what more can we expect? Nothing will ever top Empire Strikes Back so we just have to take what we can get and although The Last Jedi isn't a masterpiece it's entertaining and enjoyable. Recommended, but if you're already a Star Wars fan you don't need any recommendation, you've already seen it.

If i think this movie without all that pointless humor i really like it more, but it's not the case. Expand

The main problem is Disney trying to monetize the movie, creating a diferent view from the perspective of a diferent public, the fans. Well, just like EA, Star Wars is a movie for the next generation of people, the newcomers of the Saga. I just hope that Hope con save Them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me tell you, I am not going to say this movie is good just because it is star wars because the facts are it was probably one of the weak points in this saga and really felt no better than the cringey prequels. It tries to hard to find humour in what is supposed to be a mostly serious movie and just feels off in star wars. Another thing I found very strange was the unbelieveabilty of some sequences, such as Leia being the only survivor of a massive ship explosion (what a coincidence) and kills off a fan favourite (Ackbar)to introduce Laura Dern into the mix. It definitely also tries to hard to introduce lots of other characters such as Rose, who accompanies Finn through the movie and then dies at the end. I mean, what was the point? Also, none of the rumours or theories turned out to be true leaving a lot disappointed after watching. It really didn't seem like the saga progressed and just felt like a filler for a hopefully much better Episode IX. Expand

If "Force Awakens" (which I liked) fell too much on the "same" side of the equation, this film falls a bit too much for me on the side of being "different," to the point where it often doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie. But I doubt most of us (myself included) could have done any better if we had somehow been put in charge.

The best Star Wars movies, even in their darkest moments, had an element of hope of them. There was fun and joy in them. This film, from director-writer Rian Johnson, often feels too bleak and cynical to be enjoyed. (It's very much in line with "Looper," another film by Johnson.) So, respectfully, I have to say this movie isn't for me.
