This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Instead of good vs bad, we have a movie of Dumb and Dumber.
The only interest plot is between, Luke(Dies), Rey, Kylo and Snoke (also dies very quickly). Other than this 4 characters, every other character in the movie failed to demonstrate any sign of intelligence, regardless they are on the side of First Order or the Resistance. General HUX and several other First Order officers had multiple easy opportunities to crush the rebellion, they would not take advantage on any of them. While several attempts of escape by the Resistance were thwarted by, not the First Order, but other Resistance members. Disney/Lucasfilms and director Rian Johnson want to move the franchise to a new direction, but failed to deliver a logical story on one of the two main lines of the plot. Furthermore, they paid very little regard to the fact that this is second movie of a trilogy, and 8th of 9 movies chronicle. "Let past dies, kill them if you have to" echos both inside the plot-line and out in the franchise's business direction. What they did is surprising, but none truly is a "Shocker". If they are bald enough to turn Rey to the dark side when Kylo offered alliance to her, I would respect that and be genuinely intrigued on the next movie. But as it stands, I have not developed any emotional connection with Poe, Finn or Rose; nor any fear or hatred toward Hux. Rey and Kylo is just the light-side girl tired to turn the dark-side boy and failed, so she will either try again or kill him in the final movie, that would not motivate me for Ep 9.

The First Order (New Empire) is suddenly in control of the entire galaxy at the start of the movie (no explanation of this is given. The Resistance (Rebel Republic) is suddenly on the verge of losing every soldier in their army at the start of the movie. Their army is down to a couple hundred people (this is never explained either). The entire movie revolves around a low speed chase between the fleeing rebels, and the pursuing imperials. This entire movie long chase sequence is full of plot holes, but more importantly it is boring. Without explanation in this movie a certain long running star wars character suddenly has full blown force powers. Dumb prequel level goofy aliens keep showing up ala Jar Jar Binks throughout the film. Expand

What a waste... of time... of money... of talent... of possibilities... This movie was a complete letdown. I saw a fan-made reimagined fight scene between Obi Wan and Vader that was far better than this - and it was only a few seconds long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What was wrong with this movie?
The entire Finn and Rose plot if it was cut would not have negatively impacted the movie at all.
Everyone who is a fan of star wars wanted to see Luke. What happened to him how powerful is he really? We basically got teased than a door shut in our face.
Wouldn't you be upset if a gorgeous woman (or man) stripped in front of you heavily implying this was going somewhere and than just walked away...

I'm a star wars fan who was genuinely excited by 'The Force Awakens' and very let down by 'The Last Jedi'. It wasn't the worst movie ever but it wasn't great. First off - who let Lucas write again? Didn't we decide that was a terrible idea? The dialogue is bad (and yes I know Star Wars films traditionally have cheesy ass lines) and most of the jokes are tone deaf and/or fall flat. Rose's "beautiful lousy place" line was so bad it was incredible. Kylo Ren (arguably the best part of the film) keeps saying "kill the past" and yet all this movie does is recycle the same Star Wars tropes over and over and over again. I couldn't believe the end was ANOTHER rebels-trapped-in-rebel-hold-while-AT-ATs-attack (Hoth did it better). I understand that "The Force Awakens" had to gently get the audience to trust the Star Wars franchise again by lovingly following the old movies but now that you've got us - could you please do something more interesting and new? In general the cartoonification of it all was annoying. I don't need that many stupid creatures. I don't need General Hux made up to look more sickly and evil than in the 'Force Awakens' and then have everybody fling him around like a comic relief puppet. One of the joys of Star Wars is when the writers can walk the line between serious drama and realizing its a space opera. This movie's slapstick stupidity drowned the few dramatic pearls. I have so many things to complain about - the editing and pacing of the film was terrible. Finn and Rose's story was completely pointless. The force was used to do tricks that I guess were suppose to be cool (surviving space?) but came off as dumb. I usually agree with the critics reviews but now I'm wondering if Disney slipped them some cash. I'm writing this review in the hopes that maybe....maybe somebody is listening to the audience reviews (and not just writing them off as angry fanboys). Please use the feedback to make episode IX better!!!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a well made movie that is filled with missed opportunities and letdowns! Watching this movie was like having someone take a **** in my heart. They made Luke a coward and gave him no redemption. Dropped plot lines and threw away several characters. Where the hell are the Knights of Ren!? What about the other students of Luke that left with Kylo. Neither Rey nor Kylo received any training! The entire movie occurs over the coarse of like twenty-four hours which makes character development almost non existent! I Spent the whole movie waiting for that great moment that never came(excluding the throne room fight). Did anyone else notice that there is not a lightsaber battle in this entire movie? No two lightsabers come into contact with one another! Where the hell is Luke's green lightsaber? I enjoyed the force awakens to spite its many flaws. I never want to see this movie again and I no longer care about episode nine. I never thought I would say these words. Ryan Johnson should not be making his own trilogy if this is what he thinks star wars should be. I also cannot believe all the critical denial that is happening around this movie because critics are afraid to offend the creators and not get invited to the next flashy premier. The only thing to look forward to about this is the thirty minute honest trailer video you can make ripping this movie apart... Pathetic... 4/10 and that's being generous! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not a bad movie, but ultimately really hurt to watch as a long-time Star Wars fan. Instead of expanding the universe and focusing on the excellent characters JJ Abrams gave us in the previous film, Rian Johnson's movie becomes totally preoccupied with subverting expectation. It's cute at first when the film surprises you, but as the film went on I found myself asking, "but where is the movie?" I wanted more. I wanted an interesting universe and for the events of the previous film to have some kind of weight. I wanted the ridiculously charismatic John Boyega to have more to do than some throwaway B-plot that had no consequence on the story with a character nobody cares about (not Kelly Marie Tran's fault — she was as good as possible given the role). I wanted to know who Snoke was. I wanted to see Luke as more than a broken old man. I wanted to know who or what the Knights of Ren were.

The best part of this movie was the dynamic between Rey and Kylo. Everything else left me cold.

Does nothing to further the previous movies set ups, or set up next movie. Killed all the momentum Star was had. Does not have the Star Wars magic. Did nothing to further the Star Was mythology. Full of gotcha moments instead of creative ideas, and story telling. This is a movie that does not understand itself. As bad as the first two prequels. Also, this movie has aged very poorly. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ***SPOILERS***

No. No. No. This was supposed to be the golden nugget; the Empire Strikes Back of the new franchise. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed. All is not lost though, as there were some really good parts. The scenes between Rey and Kylo are great. There is a real connection there and both actors are spectacular. The lightsaber battle in the throne room is unbelievable. Luke and Leia's characters are also really good and it's great to see them back on screen.

Now the bad news. The First Order is portrayed to be total idiots. Hux is a total p*ssy that gets owned at every turn. In the opening battle they have 3 giant ships and tons of fighters that can't destroy 1 ship. In the ending battle a ship the size of the moon gets taken down by the ridiculous tactic of simply ramming another ship into it (The Rebellion should just get their hands on 30 or so crappy transports, set course for the nearest Star Destroyer and hit the hyper-drive button. War over). Snoke's and Phasma's characters are a total waste. I get that main characters, and especially supporting characters, often get killed off in big movies to create the shock factor. But killing off the guy who is supposed to be the ultimate badass, ruler of the empire, shrouded in mystery force-God half way through the movie was a slap in the face. Snoke is portrayed to be the ultimate puppet master in the Force Awakens. We finally get to see him in action in Last Jedi only for him to be killed off with no big battle, no explanation and no closure. The same is true for Phasma. Who is she? In the 2 films she played in she was totally owned in all her scenes and seems just to be fodder for Disney to sell more toys. She again confronts her former trooper and gets her ass kicked in seconds and then is dead. Nothing there. No development or back-story whatsoever.

On to more bad news. Did you know this movie is a comedy? The humor and one-liners in the Last Jedi are too many too count. While I am all for not making a movie want to cut myself (Yes, you Man of Steel) or bore me to death there is a limit to how many zings you can put into what is supposed to be a serious drama. The jokes keep running in Last Jedi, mostly at the expense of the First Order. This serves to undermine their portrayed iron-fist rule over the galaxy. Moreover, the jokes are misplaced. I cringed when Rey made a joke about Kylo with his shirt off in what was supposed to be a dramatic force-connected moment. In the confrontation between Kylo and Luke I was riveted when the two were about confront each other but distracted by the joke when Kylo throws Hex out of his way. Bottom line is they made it all corny and goofy.

Hollywood sucks at making CGI people and animals. You think that movie-makers would have learned their lesson after Lucas' Jar-Jar mess but, you would be wrong. Riding on CGI animals, unnecessary creatures (shameless Disney marketing ploy named Porgs) and Luke milking a CGI Sea Lion are completely useless to the story and made me want to walk out. Somehow most CGI landscapes can look completely real but the animals look like Doom creatures from 1998. They suck and snap me out of the fantasy of the movie and back to the reality of the fact that its just a computer made mess. The whole casino-crashing, riding on ugly donkeys scene was terrible.

The supporting characters are not interesting. I didn't care about Rose, Finn, the entire command of the Rebellion or anyone not named Kylo Ren in the First Order. The characters were crap and their story-lines were useless, uninteresting or not emotionally engaging. The only saving grace was Poe. Poe wrapped me up right from the start and didn't let go. He is a wonderfully acted character. Too bad his scenes are often ruined by the awful Admiral Holdo, played by Laura Dern. Dern's purple-haired character doesn't blend in with the rest of the characters and feels completely forced. That, and, she sucks as an actress.

Overall, I was very disappointed in this movie. Rian Johnson has taken this franchise, which showed so much promise after Abram's Force Awakens, and sent it off the tracks. His ill-timed use of humor, lack of respect for the characters of the franchise and overuse of CGI (does no one remember Episodes 1-3?) doom this movie. I would rank it #4 in the lineage of the Star Wars episodes. If you have seen the first 3 episodes you will know this is not a good thing.

You are still going to go see it no matter what the review says. I just hope that the next film, directed by Abrams, goes back to the Lucas-style roots.

Slapstick, lazy insult humor, and distractingly out-of-place modern vernacular threaten to tip the balance to all out farce, until the film jarringly goes for pathos with a subversive take on the Star Wars mythos that is at first refreshing but ultimately too convoluted and contradictory to warrant more than an indifferent head scratch. The detailed production design and cutting-edge special effects are as impressive as ever, but all in service of an uneven story that shuffles interchangeable characters around new-but-familiar backdrops. Mysteries are introduced as quickly as they're swept under the rug. The conflict never really goes deeper than a simple take on 'good vs. evil' or 'young vs. old' (The implicit ageism in this movie, in traditional Disney fashion, is off the charts.) Old and new characters randomly pop up (sometimes literally and inexplicably) to rattle off clunky exposition and hoary declarations. Despite some intriguing gestures towards an internal battle brewing within the protagonist and antagonist, such complexities are quickly diffused with on-the-nose dialogue that relies on telling rather than showing. It's hard to care about the mysteries, conflicts, and mythologies that are woven through the story when characters repeatedly stop the action to explain away everything in increasingly literal and tone-deaf terms. This makes for easy, accessible entertainment, but it's constantly undercutting any semblance of drama, suspense, or cinema, a few gorgeous set pieces and locales not-withstanding. Entire subplots (something about a Master Codebreaker?) and characters could have easily been left on the cutting room floor, allowing for a more focused and purposeful movie. It's as if the filmmakers made the mistake of conflating running time with "epicness," rather than work to make each scene build to a cohesive whole. The film is easily 30-minutes too long, which turns the beautifully-staged climactic battle into an exhausting and perfunctory coda rather than the culmination of 40-years of meticulous world-building. The film seems like a grab bag of ideas, gags, archetypes, and plotpoints that the filmmaker/studio was too enamored with to let go of, but not diligent enough to fully integrate into a compelling story. Ultimately, like the prequel trilogy, this movie probably works best if you turn the sound off and just appreciate the design and technology behind the visuals. I was skeptical about the surprisingly low user score this movie is getting across the board, as it reeked of sour grapes from the fanboy brigade, but after seeing the movie for myself, I get the reaction. The film is perfectly mediocre and passable and not really worth the fuss. Expand

On the surface it has many elements natural to the series, and many that bear a striking resemblance to its predecessors, but that’s not why it fails. It fails because it’s nonsensical, lackadaisical, and heretical. Firstly the good: I don’t agree with the approach they took with Luke (just like I didn’t with Han in TFA), but I didn’t find his part difficult to accept. Reading between the lines and looking back and older movies makes his actions believable enough if you will it so. He doesn’t get bested by Rey; he abandoned the force and has no drive to live. Strangely enough some of the jokes were funny (success rate was under 50%, excluding Hux-related jokes which were 0%). Now that the good is out of the way, let’s look at this movie’s 3 main failings.

The movie is lackadaisical because it doesn’t know its audience. It desperately tries to appease to youngsters and older fans may be insulted. It doesn’t settle into a rhythm. There is a flimsy interlude at a casino, mostly just so Finn and Rose can rescue some ugly horses, but it’s like a scattershot cantina scene with zero personality. Numerous times—the movie frequently does terrible jumps between locations—Poe desperately asks for a plan as they stay one step ahead of the first order, only to be ignored or insulted for no good reason. Even Rey and Ren (sans stupid helmet thankfully) commune via astral-projection to allow for dull exposition between two opposing sides without needing to justify frequent physical encounters. The final lightsaber battle is pretty weak honestly.

It’s nonsensical because illogical things happen. The resistance (aka rebellion) are virtually nothing, despite so many previous victories. Laser projectiles curve downwards in space. The first order’s best ships can’t manage to spot transport vessels leaving the last remaining cruiser despite being in visual range. Do none of these futuristic spacecraft have autopilot? Two characters somehow come out alive in an explosion while the enemies that were surrounding them are toast.

Finally it’s heretical because it tosses the lore aside. This one it does deliberately and callously. It makes sense, Lucas is gone and all that deep lore is a burden for new directors/producers. Start with a clean slate, right? This is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Lore is Star Wars and Star Wars is lore. You can build layers, like the prequels, you can add your own stories, like KOTOR, and, hell, you can even fill the gaps, like Rogue One. What you can’t do is wipe it all away and opt to not replace it, but The Last Jedi does just that. As the second movie in a trilogy you would expect to be interested in where it goes next, but I could not care less.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointing movie in many ways. Overall it felt very disconnected from the previous film. The movie did very little to build upon The Force Awakens, and it did not feel like a sequel in a trilogy. Whatever questions from TFA that were answered seemed very uncreative and uninspiring. The writers failed to deliver an intriguing story. Also, the way Luke's character was used was very underwhelming. Luke had zero action scenes and his humor was way too flipant. I could do without the SJW political messages, too. Disney needs to make sure that Rian Johnson never writes or directs another Star Wars movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars has changed, and we should understand that.
Changes can be good or bad and in this case, we got a bad one.
It's understandable to a company to introduce new characters, a new enemy, change some things here and there, but what was done to this franchise can only be considered failure.
The good things in this movie are: Soundtrack and Photography. That's pretty much it.
Now the bad things... Well, I will just say some that left me disappointed and saddened.
First, the scene were Leia comes back to the spaceship after surviving an explosion and wandering in space... what?! How did she come back? How did she survive being in the vacuum of space? Not just the cold, but her eyes would have popped from her head.
We have Snoke and Phasma's deaths occurring prematurely (in my opinion) making those characters completely worthless. You might argue how the same thing happened with Palpatine and Boba Fett, but here's the thing. Palpatine and Boba Fett were characters that appeared when the SW universe was still "in creation", as Snoke and Phasma were introduced in a already existing one, with books, movies, cartoons, HQ's and more. Palpatine even has some more backstory and lore added to his character trough the Book of the Sith aswell.
J. J. Abrams vision on Luke is sh*t. I understand that people change over the years, but what happened to Hamill's character was a complete failure. Luke sulking on that island, refusin to help Rey, wanting to end the Jedi... It hurts to think about that.
The whole story about how and why Ben became Kylo Ren, his "connection" with Rey... That's was just bad. It was weak. His character grows more and more unbearable and meaningless, with goals that are just too cliché to be good.
The movie itself, cast, photography, soundtrack are all good, for someone that don't really cares about the SW Universe, it might be a good movie. But if you were a fan already this is gonna be hard for you to watch. Abrams was a mistake, Disney was a mistake.
Star Wars didn't die as hero and became a villain with a poor new trilogy and new games that just want to consume your money made by mErcenAries.

I had very mixed feelings after watching the film. There were some parts I liked a lot and some parts I very much didn't. In general, I am sad to say that, for me at least the bad outweighed the good. I enjoyed the the story line with Ray. I liked a lot of the subversion of expectation. I liked to see a diverse group in positions of power in the rebels. Though I enjoyed the expanded universe, ultimately, I am perfectly fine with them diverging from it, they established that they would be doing so with the previous movie. I did not like much of the humor, especially where it derailed the plot and streaked suspension of disbelief. I also feel that the movie's creators mistook the difference between grand and dramatic, with the movie leaning into the territory of overly dramatic. I don't think the tone fits with the original trilogy, or even with the prequels. That is not to say that I feel different is bad, I love change, as long as it fits with and connects to what has been previously established. Finally, I felt many characters were shallow, the action was often a bit too over the top, and any overall message dis-guarded subtlety, coming off a bit heavy handed. Expand

Go watch this movie if for you Star Wars is all about special effects and space combat. If scenario, character development or overall coherence are anything important for you, run far, far away from this movie because it makes no sense at all.

On the negative side, poor story, some pointless side story lines. On the neutral side, most of the acting was ok at least. On the positive side Mark Hamilton was really good (even though the Luke story he was given to act was weak)

Passable as mindless entertainment, but have to call bs on a lot of the force 'space mary poppins' and projection stuff - jedis/sith run into the same issues as a lot of superhero movies in that once their powers essentially become unlimited and their presence or death becomes another magic trick, the story loses its tension or what little 'believable' fantasy rules it established to begin with. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie made me sad.
Audio-visually great movie is disrespectful to the original trilogy at best. Makers of the movie should be punished by law for assault on icons of popular culture. Casino world (Canto Bight) scenes should be cut all together as they are pointless.
I get it that they have to close stories of the original characters.
Ray character is as bland as possible.
Closure to Luke is lazy.
Closure to Leia is non existent.
And there is Sonoke. You may argue that Emperor Palpatine was introduced out of the blue. But there was no Star Wars movies outside the original trilogy, so they can introduce new characters without backstory.
But if you have so much material as canon, how can you introduce the most powerful character and kill it 5 minutes after?
Again. Lazy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A subversion of tropes to the point where nothing matters

The Force Awakens, as safe, fan-servicing and nostalgia-based it was, made at least one thing right - it set the stage for next movies due to the mysteries it touched but didn't bother to explain. Who is Snoke? What ancient powerful being is he? Where did he hide all these years? Who are Rey's parents? Why did they leave her in the middle of a **** nowhere? Why is she so powerful quick learner in everything? Was she trained in the ways of the Force, but doesn't remember? Why Luke is gone? If he doesn't want to be bothered, why did he leave a map to his seclusion? Most of these questions constitute plot holes actually, and big parts of the TFA make sense only if next episodes explain it in a satisfactory way. Star Wars fans had a lot of material to speculate and craft sometimes crazy and head spinning theories. Which is good, since that gave hope that Sequel Trilogy may have some depth, smart plot-twists, and earned dramatic moments.
And here comes Rian Johnson with the Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Do you remember the final scene of the TFA, you know, that tense, shot from multiple angles scene, in which Rey's and Luke's facial expressions and body languages signalized that **** is serious? The very first scene set on that island in the TLJ is a direct continuation of that scene. What does Luke do, when Rey gives him the lightsaber? Throws it away like a an empty can. Shocking? Yeah, propably. Unexpected? You bet. But is it unexpected in a good way? Hell no. It's stupid, it's cheating, it's like writers didn't watch the TFA. It undermined the importance of everything what happened in the TFA that lead to the final scene. And it's only the beginning. Want to know who Snoke is? Nevermind, we kill the guy in the middle of the movie without hinting any backstory. Want to know who are Rey's parents? It doesn't matter, most propably nobody. And what about the map? What map? We have revised that story line, now it's Ressistance that sent Rey to Luke. That's propably the greatest sin of this movie - it dismisses it's own direct predecessor and throws away almost all hinges of the story set in the TFA, making the TFA nonsensical and pointless.

Characters are too dumb too frequently, inconsistent, or their actions are inconsequential anyway for the sake of the plot

Rey thought it's a good idea to go alone to the Snoke's ship and surrender in order to turn Kylo Ren. Did she think that they have so strong bond that she can do this alone? Even if she succeeds, how do they escape, if no rare event, like being hit by lightspeed bullet, occurs?
Snoke sets and exploits a force connection between his emotionally unstable apprentice and Rey to hunt down a hermit on a distant planet, who decided to wait for death in solitude anyway.
Admiral Holdo hides her plan from hot headed, known for authority questioning Poe Dameron, without other reason than to force Poe to mutiny.
Finn's and Rose's side quest is inconsequential at best or even makes things worse.
Leia knows better then we do that she's there only for an exposition.
Kylo Ren smashes an elevator with his helmet due to his emotional turmoil which he cannot hide and later proves himself a master of occlumency.

Nonsensical bits and pieces

TLJ also introduced a very dangerous way of destroying things in a very efficient way. Don't take me wrong, it's a great idea to make a bullet from ship with hyperdrive and just smash it against enemy's dreadnaught or flagship. It's desperate, it's spectular, it suits well the Rebels (erm... Ressistance). It's dangerous because it undermines every previous attempts to destroy big ships. It seems that no one needed to find a weak spots and make complicated plans to destroy, let's say, Death Stars or other spherical weapons of mass destruction, just one ship with a hyperdrive and working autopilot (or a crew willing to sacrifice) is enough.
In the first scene Ressistance is dropping bombs on the dreadnaught, defying laws of physics and established technological level.
Writers try to make a lot of unearned drama and tension. That random Asian woman sacrifices herself? Nobody cares, since the movie hasn't spent any time to get to know her. Admiral Holdo sacrifices herself? Nobody cares, since nobody likes her, she made stupid decisions, and her sacrifice should be unnecessary anyway. Finn sacrifeces himself? It would mean something, but Rose stops him in quasi-sacrifice. The love confession is hardly believable and even Finn is stunned.
Humour is immersion breaking and breaking the 4th wall too obnoxious.

Are there any redeeming qualities that movie has? Redeeming propably not, but visuals are outstanding, like they should in a modern blockbuster, camera work is great and it conveys emotions and point of views properly, music is, as always in Star Wars thanks to Williams, perfect. Unfortunatelly it doesn't help much in plot and character developement department.

To quote my thirteen year old son from the cinema today "...it just doesn't feel like star wars...". Can't disagree with him there. I came, I saw and was definitely entertained but not by a star wars.... by something new. Space wars? Maybe? Wait for the DVD guys. If this work was derived from any other space-thing material I would probably give this a solid 7. But it uses the name and so it gets a 5/10 from me. Also I love my son for pointing out "...where was Lando?".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw the user review scores for this movie I was a little surprised. I mean the concept of a star wars movie being on par with the skyline sequel seems impossible. For the first week of the movie's release I had to try (and usually fail) pretty hard to avoid spoilers, which frustrated me because even though I'm not the biggest star wars fan, I Loved the force awakens and wanted to experience it's sequel for what it is. Now That I've seen the movie,I will say that while this movie has been a bit over hated by the audience, it was in my opinion, thoroughly disappointing. I feel that the biggest flaw with this movie is simply that it doesn't feel like a star wars film. Putting the series in perspective, it's backbone has always been each movie's feeling of adventure. "A new hope" kick started the franchise because it not only created an enthralling universe, but took it's heroes through a variety of locations and scenarios which gave the audience a feeling of excitement and progression. Like an amusement park, there was something new and interesting around every corner. Now let's look at the last Jedi. The concept of a Star Wars movie having a plot taking place over the course of like, two days seems like a cardinal sin. I remember the exact moment in this movie where my expectations dropped. The first twenty minutes of the film started off on the right foot, (Grand scale space battles aren't new to this franchise, but they don't get old easy.) I felt a little nervous however, when they mentioned that the bombing fleet the resistance loses in the beginning was all the bombers they had, and then they say that the resistance is down to a few hundred people spread across four ships. How can it be a war if one side has a single army? And if that is all that's left, then they must not hold any planets either. This isn't a war anymore, it's just what is essentially the government running down some convicts. This may seem like a petty complaint, but it seriously damaged my enjoyment of the film when I was supposed to believe that we can still logically root for such a small force to win the war. But that's not the moment where I lost hope in this movie, it was when during the battle, the resistance resolves to keep out of the enemy ships range and think of a plan. I remember thinking to myself "They better not stay there the whole movie." But hey, guess what the plot is about? slow attrition. On top of all that, the movie Seems to have a general theme of everyone failing to do everything. To go into better detail about this, look at how each of the three subplots plays out. The mutiny subplot is slow paced and is ultimately pointless as the people fighting have no reason to. a third of this movie is literally about people considering violence against one another over misinformation. The casino subplot is based on the pointlessness of the mutiny story, and is full of weird, animal rights messages, some of the worst costume design in recent memory, (Those police officers in specific) A pointless drunkard character, and a "Big reveal" that the resistance has some evil tenancies too, which is really just saying they had the audacity to buy weapons when they were trying to win a war. The subplot about Rey's training was probably the best part of the movie, but it still destroyed the legacy of one of cinema's most recognizable figures by making Luke into a depressed old man who's lost all faith. On top of all this, the movie also undoes all of the progress made in the last film. "Oh, the resistance destroyed the star killer base? well too bad, apparently that one solar system we saw get destroyed was the entire republic, and the first order won the war. "so we found Luke and he's gonna save everyone right?" Nope, he wanted to go missing, and has gone from an understanding force for good to a close minded old man who wants to end the Jedi order. This movie wasn't just bad because it was a disappointing sequel, it's bad because it voids all of the powerful moments in it's superior predecessor. I think my last real complaint is that I really don't know what the message of the story was. At first I thought it was "Move on from the past", but that's the mentality the villain holds on to. So... what is it? after recalling the plot, the only moral I can find is "Hope is good" Which isn't just generic, but it's the message of the entire franchise, we need something a little more specific for individual movies. All in all, this movie is worth a watch if you want to follow the plot, but it wasn't the continuation we wanted. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have given this movie five stars, but the Hunger Games references really did it in for me. "We are the spark that lights up the rebellion." Oh please, I wanted to violently vomit at that point. It's worth mentioning that I hate the Hunger Games more than most. Unlike most of the pissed-off star wars fans, I didn't actually mind that Rey's parents were nobodies, because I think it's plausible that she is simply extremely force-sensitive. Having said that, I don't think gets to understanding most of what there is to learn about the force in a mere two minutes, when it took Luke Skywalker an entire trilogy. That is simply too unrealistic, and it's lazy storytelling. As for the story, it was too long, if that is a valid criticism of a story. And yet, it was too short, in detailing Rey's Jedi training, at the hands of Luke. Dialogues were god-awful, every single damn character, with the exception of Oscar isaac maybe, were delivering their lines as if they were the most goddamn important things on earth. The overdramaticism killed me. The first order was as laughably incompetent as in TFA, and not incompetent in terms of power and resources, but in terms of general effect. Sorry Bill Weasley, but Hux kinda sux, and sorry Snoke, you need to get a less glittery jacket. I thought the whole Luke-Rey-Kylo Ren dynamic worked out pretty well, and as usual, the ship fight scenes were too long. I would have given this movie 5 stars, also, if it weren't for the goddamn owly-things on Luke's island whose only purpose was to sell some more merch for Disney. Damnit! I don't think this review contains any spoilers, so I won't check the box. Actually, I think I will, just to be safe. Expand

This movie made me feel sad and confused... Rian Johnson made such a focused effort to subvert your expectations that you become numb to the random "GOTCHA" moments throughout this film. Conflict is created for the sake of conflict, and characters are beat down contrary to their established arcs just to elevate other characters. I love Rey, I love Jyn (I love strong women in general, Sarah Conner for example) but Holdo and Rose were horrible characters that were forced in to make a political point. It was either telling the audience that Poe is a moron hot shot loser, or that saving space horses is more important than the mission. This movie has criticisms of capitalism... the same capitalism that allowed Disney to buy a monopoly of the entertainment system... the same system that makes them billions of dollars per year. I don't need to be preached at in my Star Wars, I need to escape to a Galaxy Far Far Away. Summary:

Negatives

- Horrible new characters
- Previous characters are totally uncharacteristic and untrue to themselves
- Rian Johnson Breaks the Force
- #JusticeforAkbar

Positives

- Throne room
- Hyperspace (even though it breaks canon)
- Adam Driver's performance

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great visuals/special effects, some ideas/concepts i.e. Canto Bite were interesting but not executed or realised sufficiently to make it satisfying. Some magical moments like reunion scenes i.e. Luke & R2, Chewie & Luke, Luke & Yoda that were genuine & heartfelt. “Some” of the humour was on point and there were moments of shear brilliance.
TFA was branded a rehash of previous films and even though I would agree at least the story was coherent and made sense, the character development was satisfying and it set things up perfectly in regards to paying respectful homage to the past and creating mystery for the future.TLJ is a victim of trying too hard to be what it needs to be “Original” and “Unpredictable” and in trying so hard to be these things it falls flat on every single hurdle.
TFA paid respectful homage to the original films carefully balancing the humour with serious moments. TLJ literally tries to rewrite these rules, making it come across as more like a spoof. The scene where Luke throws the saber over his shoulder could have been taken straight from an episode of the Simpson's, General Hux was turned into a bad stand up comedian repeating the same jokes over and over. There were a few really odd moments in TLJ, the one that springs to mind first and foremost is the character that should have been handled with so much care, because the actress is no longer with us. There were at least two moments in the movie in which could have been used to respectfully send off this character, but instead they decided to turn these ideal moments into missed opportunities and awkward situations. Princess Leia was quite literally turned into superman which was such a strange moment and very awkward. Not only did this make literally no sense at all considering Leia never had any Jedi training prior, it was such a disrespect to the character and talented actress whom is no longer with us.Luke milking a huge sea cow like walrus and drinking it,with a wink to the camera like it had been taken from an advert was again a scene that belonged in an episode of the Simpson's. Rey was one of the great characters developed in TFA,she worked really well with the character Kylo Ren she saw this character murder his own father in TFA,yet in this movie she is getting all hot and bothered by seeing him with no top on!
The majority of the movie was one big chase, entertaining from a visual/effects side of things, but it didn’t make a great deal of sense. The Maz Kanata snippet could have been taken straight from a video game, its almost like they needed to include this character and couldn’t come up with how to, so they did this just to include the character.Whilst the Canto Bite segment was in theory a great concept, the execution was all wrong, the entire scene felt like it was from a completely different movie, completely unnecessary and waste of half an hour, the time could have been utilised developing other characters that so desperately needed it.The Finn and Rose romance was unengaging and did not resonate.
TFA set up things so well for an eventual pay off in subsequent films. Snoke was a powerful character probably one of the most villainous characters ever. Yet he gets killed so simply that just makes you gasp in annoyance. Rey again such an important character in this new trilogy set up so well in TFA in regards to her parentage mystery and could of turned out to be anybody.Yet they decided to go with an overwhelming bombshell that she is a little orphan mary sue whom parents sold her for drug money.
Rey's training barely happened yet we are lead to believe she is now a fully fledged Jedi by the end of the movie. Showing Luke's X-wing submerged makes no sense unless he was going to raise it up out of the water at some point during the movie and use it to fly and save the day as Jedi Master Luke – but it never happened. Instead he decided to use his force abilities to project himself.
BB8 is the new R2-D2 that much is for certain but it made no sense to bring R2-D2 back to life purely to give us the map to find Luke or to remind Luke of the good O'l times.Everyone anticipated the return of Luke Skywalker, but the way they treated his character was a complete lack of respect. We are lead to believe Luke did not want to be found and went to the island to die,yet why did he plant/hide the segment of the map so that he could be found,it feels at times like director Rian Johnson didn’t even take the time to watch the previous movies before writing this one. Luke was willing to sacrifice himself in order to bring his father back to the light side, yet we are lead to believe that this is the same character whom is willing to murder his own nephew all because he senses a little darkness in him.
An entertaining film but leave your brain at home, but a hugely disappointing Star Wars Movie that does not deliver on anything that was promised in the previous instalment and pays little respect to the overall Star Wars Legacy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's better than the VII, but it's not a great movie. Beautiful, sometime original, with some fulgurance, but without a soul. What's baffling me is, that the most useless character in this new Trilogy, Rose, is one of the most well presented between them all... In like, 5 minutes, you know everything you need to appreciate her, she's honest, brave, has a strong temperament, she's devastated by the death of her sister, but willing to save/help the other in her honor, etc.

Why, oh why, didn't have they done the same for Rey, Finn, Kylo and Poe? Seriously, i don't care about them because i don't know them and i don't relate to them. Even after Two films, i know that Rey is an orphan, that she has follow BB-8 into the resistance because of... Han ? Maybe? And that she just want to save Kylo because of ... Han ? No, seriously, i don't know.

Finn, oh Finn, what a pity, he could have been so great, imagine just a second. Twenty year before the VII, Finn and Phasma are young children, trained like soldier, brainwashed, mentally broke to become obedient killer. Phasma and Finn befriend in adversity, but they choose two different path, Finn only want to be discret, to become invisible, Phasma know that being the best is the only way to stop the abuse. Twenty years later, Finn enter in Phasma's unit, and he discover what she had become, a ruthless killer.

But no, Phasma is a laughable caracter without a past, without motive, Finn is only an honest and gentle coward that try to escape, everything he try fail, and everytime sheer luck or someone else save him. It's saddening. He got a bit better in this movie, but his part of the plot serve nothing and fail. So...

Rey i already talked, i appreciate her a little more, she's an orphan, she wants to find her place in the galaxy, to know where she come from. It's okayish, she has some great moment in the movie.

Poe is the best pilot in the resistance, beyond human, but he is the worst officer. He just abandonned BB-8 in the VII, and got half is crew killed to destroy one ship... And that's all i knew of him. Kylo is ridiculous, less in this one, but seriously, why can't he use the freaking force when he fight? Those red guards, he could have break their bones in a twist, push them trough a wall, make them suffocate and....No... he only fight with his light saber because it make things more difficult, and it make the scene less impressive and less enjoyable... The part where he is linked to Rey is great, but it lacks something... And Kylo lack something, he want to become a second Vador, but why ? Did Snoke used a trick to make a false "ghost of Anakin" appear to young Ben and drive him to the dark side, telling him is destiny is to be the Supreme Ruler of all living being ?

Snoke is a NPC with a quest, he appear, tell Kylo to find a map, then to find Rey, and then he disappear. No past, no motive, nothing...

Luke, it's not my Luke, it's not George Lucas or Mark Hamill's Luke, but it's a good Luke, an original one at least, i can live with that. I hoped he made a greater impact, and a most impressive show of strength, but it was entertaining.

Leia use actively the force for the first time, not how i imagine it, but why not, the special effect where pretty bad, but the scene was not that incoherent. A human can survive in space for a minute, Leia is a powerful untrained jedi, so she can survive longer without massive injuries. Her being unconsicous was necessary to the BAD plot, because Poe would have known there was a master plan and half the movie would have cease to exist, so... But, i need to know, was their a sas somewhere or a shield? because when they open the door to the command center room, the corridor should have depressurized!

And more importantly, if gravity don't interfere with light speed, has seen with the millenium falcon getting through the starkiller shield directly into the atmosphere in the VII, why don't they use x-wing has missile ? They have hundreds of them (has seen on Leia computer at the start), they could send two by First order destroyer, even if the first order produce interdictor cruiser, they work by creating gravity around them, soooo, freewin for the resistance, hell yeah.

Sorry for the long text, and for my english, it's not my native language, and i rarely practice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While there were moments in the movie that I liked as a long time star wars fan, on the whole the movie was a mess. As a reference, I enjoyed TFA and was looking forward to see more development of the characters and storyline. This director decided to throw all that away and stamp his own flawed vision on the franchise. The writing at plot are a mess and there are so many plot holes it begs reasoning. The treatment of Luke in this films is unforgivable. The only reason i'm posting this opinion is that this director currently has more star wars movies slated to do, and Disney needs to take those away. Too much damage already done. Expand

Every male character is whiny, stupid, egotistic, immature, irrational, or make the wrong decisions or not to be trusted. And guess what, the “new” Luke Skywalker has some of them traits too! The leaders in this movie are female, the protagonist an over-powered female (with little training). The people making sacrifices to save everyone? Overwhelmingly female apart from one character. And most are infallible. The days when men saved women? The roles are well and truly reversed in this movie. Not to mention the diversity, interracial relationships just for the sake of it (and also does not add to the movie), and the only joke when it came to racial issues was at the expense of white red headed male character when mentioning his “pasty" skin tone. It was comical to see Chewbacca becoming conscious of being a meat eater (but not in the way they intended), and Luke Skywalker disgustingly milking a sea cow (there was absolutely no point in this). This is supposed be a galaxy far away, and yet you’re reminded of the war-profiteering and rich people being evil. Having animal rights issues thrown in there and a war general being a female with purple dyed purple hair and looks like she teaches gender studies. And we’re all set. The only thing I wasn’t surprised at was that Luke Skywalker didn’t come out as transgender or wasn’t accused by Kylo ren as being a “white male” as an insult. Oh and did I mention that white people are evil? For what it’s worth, I enjoyed it. The visuals are well and truly beautiful, and the action sequences are great. However, had it not had that, I don’t know what score I would have given it, because the writer is so politically driven with Feminism, Diversity, and anti-white male bias. The focus is lost. Lost that is, on telling a remarkable story that makes sense and doesn’t contain more plot holes than Swiss cheese. The character development is so bad that you simply do not care about any of the characters. Characters come and go, and you wonder not only who they are, but you don’t care either. Disney tried so hard to wipe the slate clean that even the Characters blatantly tell us to forget the past on BOTH sides of the war. Luckily, I’m not a huge Star Wars fan and I found some parts amusing that I shouldn’t. Something happens with Princess Leia that made some people including myself in the cinema laugh. Like wtf is going on here moment? otherwise I’d be completely gutted. Because what made Star Wars great, like the Jedi, the Luke Skywalker of old etc is not in this movie.

It's hard to write a review that doesn't include spoilers. But hey, If you ARE a Star Wars fan and want to be spoiled? You can't do any worse than actually watching this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Left the theater thinking this was a 6, but settling on a 4 or 5 after a few days. Some more specific comments: 1) Did not like how Luke was portrayed in the Luke/Kylo Ren backstory. Seemed out of character. 2) Leia space scene was really strange and immediately induced a cringe. Probably should have let her story end just before this. 3) The light speed-ram scene was kind of cool, but my first thought was, "Wow, why didn't anyone do this against the death star!" 4) The filmmakers seemed to go out of the way to NOT give the audience what was expected. Surprise is fine, but with a movie like this, that's connected to lots of other stories, you still need to give the audience a bit of what they want (so maybe do it in an unexpected way). For example, killing Snoke is fine, but give us SOMETHING about his background. Also, no reason not to let Luke be a bit more of a jedi master, which I think many wanted to see. There's lots more of this. Almost felt like the filmmakers were being vindictive to more involved fans. 5) The acting was good, the score was great, and some of the visuals were fantastic. Expand

A 2 and a half hour movie filled with little action sequences and no exciting light saber battles. They took a 30 year story and destroyed it with 1 movie. The visuals were very good however and it was a gorgeous movie to look at. The characters and their story lines were very underwhelming, even characters that I really enjoyed in the Force Awakens (Finn) disappointing me in this one. Movie could have been 30 minutes shorter with many, many unneeded scenes that had no business being in the movie. A lot of forced jokes that sometimes worked but usually didn't. The last 30 minutes of the movie was the best part in my opinion, had some memorable moments and finally a cool fight sequence. Overall a very disappointing movie after Force Awakens and Rogue One were both so good. Expand

I do believe that that Han Solo movie that is comming this year will break Star Wars nostalgia and we will finally see more realistic reviews from critics, not 8, 9, 10 but more realistically 5, 6, 7.

Or not, IGN 10/10 "timeless classic" (check please!)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of my reaction to the movie can be summed up as "but then why bother?", and not liking the weak storytelling in general. Interesting that some people online see the hate as a result of "subverted expectations" on Snoke and Rey. Maybe for a subset of Youtube plot-speculators, but it was basically the opposite for me. I was looking to care after TFA failed to sell me on it, but this movie did nothing to correct that. Snoke was and is now cemented as a useless nobody, barely more developed than Darth Maul and far less entertaining. I was dreading Rey's background reveal despite being my favourite new character, and while I hope she really is a "nobody", I can't exactly trust the word of a petty villain on that when he's trying to win Rey over.

The whole setup of the slow-motion fleet chase was underwhelming; neither desperate enough nor tense enough nor eventful enough. The hyperspace jump kamikaze looked very cool and dramatic but seemed cheap and problematic as a plot/worldbuilding point. The hacker mission was overwrought for something that basically comes to nothing, and Rose felt foisted on me without enough development. (There may have been too many characters doing things in this movie.) I was never a big fan of Poe but the way he's so deliberately "taken down a notch" here seemed clumsy and blunt. Finn was fun enough I guess but not that memorable in this movie.

The island stuff was a wash for me. There was some funny stuff: the "Force" leaf-tickle "that's the Force!" was *hilarious*, even if it was slightly too mocking. The porgs are cute and funny, but obvious toy sales fodder. Rey's training was insanely fast, but that's just Rey's thing now I guess. The milk and nuns were a tiny bit odd but sure, it's a little world-building for character, why not. The cave scene teased at something but gave us nothing, not even something disposably dramatic; just felt like a drawn out movie trope, "looking at yourself in the mirror" and all that. Force ghosts can obliterate hillsides with lightning now? Ohhkay... hey I guess there is a huge upside to being light-side Jedi! Yoda's lines felt rushed.

I did kinda like Rey's new thing of rushing to see what the dark side is all about but not actually being tempted by it. Sort of an intense but disciplined curiousity. Luke's betrayal of trust is interesting; it sure makes him look bad, a leader full of fear, but that's not boring. The throne room guard fight was ok non-dramatic action, even if the guards were a bit too "showy" whenever they introduced a new weapon. Leia's float felt a bit animatronic, and I thought it would have been a decent death if she didn't come back. Both "bombing run" sequences (opening, salt planet) felt really dragged out and lacked credibility. I cringed a little when they snuck in a little "Death Star gun".

Luke's final force ghost trick made him feel underused, sort of "oh, I guess that's it then". And all that just to delay the First Order a little bit, while a pathetically small handful of Resistance people are finally rescued after all that? I don't know about this Resistance, they don't seem very effective... better than the Republic government though I guess, what with being totally snuffed out in an instant. I did think it was a little funny how their thinking Luke must have gotten into the base somehow led them to look for an escape, obviously part of the theme introduced by the "blind hope" fleet escape plan.

There was a lot of throwing things away that had been built up, for not much gain. But the movie failed for me on a more basic level, just being kinda poorly written I think, and bloated; just never really pulling me in or giving me any payoff.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE GOOD:
-Kylo and Rey's force connection and discussions; interesting, although they kept interrupting them with humor that seemed out of place.
-The action; pretty cool action scenes
-Popcorn movie feel; I'm not terribly annoyed I saw this in a theater
-the hacker; Benecio del Toro's characters' brief musings on war and profiteering were interesting.
-Some of the humor; they used too many gags, but some were quite funny
-The acting, in general, is pretty good. Daisey Ridley, and, especially, Adam Driver, are fantastic.

THE BAD:
-The Kylo/Rey payoff; it felt lazy. The whole movie builds towards letting go of the past, and almost hints at a point where the jedi, sith, rebels, and empire are forgotten, and something new, that comes in the grey area, arises. But nope. Wasted opportunity
-Idiocy; The leaders of both sides, and Poe and Amdiral Holdo are particularly idiotic, to the point of breaking suspension of disbelief.
-Rey and BB-8 are still far too Mary Sue like, particularly BB-8 in this one.
-New characters we don't get invested in; Rose and Admiral Holdo felt forced, introduced too fast to develop character attachments.
-The timeline; it makes no goddamn sense; and who the **** is funding the first order. The empire, I get it, they usurped the galactic republic, with its massive population and giant economy. But the republic was back, so who the hell is giving this imperial offshoot the money to build supermassive capital ships and star system killing death star bases the size of planets?
-Disjointed; no real payoff, feels like one long chase seen
-Good thing Rose, a random republic mechanic, could deduce the method and countermeasure to a never before seen imperial system of hyperspace tracking
-Plot holes: big enough to drive a super star destroyer through.
-Wasting characters like captain Phasma...again.

THE UGLY:
-Luke; as Mark Hamill himself has stated, this character got a terrible treatment in this movie, and that breaks from everything Luke had been built up to be.
-Incongruity; While The Force Awakens was clearly designed to let anyone continue the Star Wars story afterwards, one would think at least a FEW of the important questions would be answered, other than potentially who Rey's parents were. Its very, very obvious that the same person who made TLJ did not make TFA
-The entire Finn/Rose subplot and Casino world seen could be cut with no drop off in quality of the film. It was simply a place to try and make a clumsy (and alltogether nonsensical) political statement.
-Misleading; The exploration of Jedi mythos and morality was just about absent, reduced to two scenes. Given the trailers, this feels like a massive deception
-leias Mary Poppins moment

OVERALL:
-It wasn't terrible, but it was also far from good. Easily the weakest of any Star Wars flick not containing Jar Jar Binks or Hayden Chistensen. Over-complicated, it loses its way, and pays off little to none of the series new topics and questions raised by TFA.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad Michael Bay is back to direct Episode 9.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel crappy that this movie is getting such a backlash, but I think it's well deserved. This is not Star Wars, it's Disney Star Wars, and Disney has been pretty arrogant from the beginning of their acquisition of Star Wars...rushing through The Force Awakens and Rogue One and promising not 3 films over 6 years (something we SW fans are used to) but ONE FILM A YEAR. Starting - as soon as Disney's machine is capable of...who cares if the story makes much sense? They chucked out all of the "EU" that fans had contributed to (and George Lucas tolerated) and said "We've got our own direction" - the direction being a complete repeat and rehash of every story element and character arc from the original trilogy.

A young desert orphan wanting to learn the force from a reclusive old master on a quirky lonely planet, the Rebel on the run from the Empire after destroying their super weapon, a personal connection between the man bad guy in a mask and our lead, a side trip to a wealthy planet where a new character betrays our heroes, a showdown on an ice (sorry, SALT) planet with AT-ATs and trench warfare...we've SEEN THIS ALL BEFORE.

Beyond that, the film is full of terrible blockbuster cliches and no earned emotional moments. Within the first 5 minutes it jumps from a prank phone call that belongs more in Guardians of the Galaxy or Spaceballs, to suddenly a dramatic sacrificial death scene of a character we've never met...then picks up cliff hanger of the last film, where we are quickly disappointed to find out that Luke, the hero of the first trilogy, is a grumpy old man and not much else. Why exactly? Well, in Disney Star Wars, that's privileged information. You'll only get it in tiny flashbacks or extended universe merchandizing the company creates to fill in the plot gaps.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was in absolute awe when Rian Johonson was chosen to write/direct VIII. I truly loved Looper and Brick and was ready for "the best SW movie since Empire". Jezz, what a let down. The movie started with Poe's prank and somehow my head went back to good old Spaceballs...
Leia flew back to the Mon Calamari cruiser...a big WTF was blinking in red in front of my eyes
By the Casino scene I was already scratching my head wondering if this was a sequel to Guardians of The Galaxy, not a SW one.
Every single time Holdo or DJ popped in the screen something felt off, like "I'm not watching a Star Wars movie"
And when Luke died for no apparent or at least well deserved (plot-wise) reason I got really angry.

In the end Star Wars is suffering because of the lack of a clear map of how this new trilogy was going to unfold. When Rey, Snoke, Kylo or the Lightsaber were introduced in VII I thought that they had clear in mind their overall arcs and backstories, but as Rian Johnson has admitted there was no plan at all. And man it shows. It's clear that the plot for VIII was not what JJ Abrams would have written, and that Rian didn't like what JJ did in VII. Instead, the new director was obsessed with avoiding the pitfalls of VII (a copycat of episode IV) and thus he tried to surprise viewers...with almost every important decision made gone wrong. And since the trilogy was not mapped at all he could basically do what he wanted to do. TFA very clearly tried to set up new characters, mysteries...and Rian simply doesn't care at all. He is a man on a mission: getting ready a clean slate but doing it in a very surprising way. And in the process he lost track of what a Star Wars story should be and having characters acting out of character, even the new ones.

Is the movie a complete disaster? Should its rating be a zero? No way. It's beautifully shot, Hamill and Driver just kill it, John Williams is back, the FX are top notch and somehow you feel that there is a good movie buried under a pile of bad plot decisions. There are brilliant and thrilling sequences that should rank among the best in the series. But sure, I understand that for most diehard fans (like me) some of the mentioned plot decisions eclipse everything else. Now, the funny thing is thinking how JJ will try to fix the situation in IX...he created something promising, Rian thrashed it, and now he is receiving it back with the aim of closuring it ...somehow. We'll see.

But it still left me disappointed, for reasons that others have already described in great detail. However, the backlash back-and-forth between critics and audiences has been fascinating. So why are critic scores so high and audience scores so low?

Two words: Rian Johnson. Not necessarily Rian Johnson the director, but Rian Johnson the person. From what I can gather, Johnson is an awesome guy. He’s kind, dignified, accessible… everything most big-budget directors are not. He has built personal relationships with critics, bloggers and podcasters like no other director working today. Many people in the film-criticism world are actual friends of his, and many others feel like they could be friends should the opportunity arise.

So imagine you’re a critic, invited to the world-premiere of one of the most anticipated movies in history. Not only are you basically friends with the director, amazed that the guy you interviewed years ago after “Brick” has now directed a Star Wars movie, you’re also rubbing elbows with some of today’s biggest movie stars, all while being enveloped in the Disney hype machine. Think you might see The Last Jedi through rose-colored glasses? I think you might, and I think many did.
The only critic I’ve seen broach this view so far is the always-great Joanna Robinson at Vanity Fair. I think other critics need to take a step back and see if their view has been clouded by how much they love Johnson.

I was so excited when it was announced Johnson would be directing The Last Jedi. I loved Looper. That movie had swagger. The Last Jedi does not have swagger. Don’t get me wrong, Johnson is still a great guy, even if The Last Jedi is not up to snuff.

One last thing: The Last Jedi lost me early. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but there’s a shot in the first few minutes of the film where a couple of Resistance fighters are walking on the surface of the planet that’s being attacked. There’s a huge (green screen) explosion RIGHT BEHIND THEM and they’re just walking casually and almost jokingly asking each other if they should evacuate. It was an early bad omen for me.

I hope they got paid well by Disney to give such undeserved praise to mediocrity. The second the Chinese actress in the beginning began to make her hero moves, I knew the user reviews were accurate. I'll be brief. The editing and screenwriting at times was so ridiculous, it was entertaining. And why did they have to force a romance at the end? Even those two characters didn't fancy each other. Sound design, CGI, and cinematography was above average. The plot was just enough to carry a major film, but the execution made the story feel like a run-of-the-mill sci-fi show from 2006. Everything kept getting worse and worse, you wonder what is taking so long. Leia's ex-machina moment was gracefully executed, but feel contrived. A friend told me that the editing for Luke at the end of the film could have lingered for effect, and I think he's right. They had wonderful opportunities to reflect, and they failed to take advantage.

Verdict: If you're a film geek (who is not a stubborn Star Wars fan) looking for a laugh, see this movie. If you want a new space opera worth your time, see Rogue One on Netflix.

I would say this movie is pretty nice if this is the first star wars you've ever seen. But if you're a die hard star wars fan then you'll find it pretty disappointed.
I am a star wars fan myself. And I would like to say this movie does not deserve 0 nor 10. I've seen movies better and worse than this.
It is really difficult for a sequel to surpass its predecessor. And the team try to do their best. They wiped out some of most beloved characters in order to tell you this is a new era, and we should let go the past. That' partially true.
Let's talk about the movie itself:
- It's a two and a half hour movie. But I think they should focus more on the main storyline. There're some sub-plot fits better with novel or comic but not the movies.
- Splendid visual. Disney just simply doesn't disappoint us.
- Bad pun. I don't know Disney tries to let the franchise more children friendly or what. Some of humor just feel unnecessary with Star Wars itself.
- Unbelievable moments. I don't want to contain spoilers in this review. But sometimes the plot just blows your mind. In a bad way. You'll feel like: Come on this is not how it's gonna work.
- Lots of battles. Those space battles are really satisfying. But I still want to see more duel between light-saber users.
- Commercial elements. For unknown reason, I always think some character, robot, creature are added because it can be a cash grab for Disney aiming at younger audience. Just a feeling.

It's still a Star Wars movie, but the plot is really the drawback on this episode. Unless they find out a way to blow our mind in episode IX. I'll give it 5 out of 10 now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to start. I didn't hate the movie but from what experienced it was definitely the weakest of the new Star Wars films. I left confused and disappointed. So much of what was setup in Episove VII simply vanishes. No Snoke reveal. Maz Kanata, who is pretty key in Rey's force journey makes a Skype cameo, Hux becomes a dunce. Too much humor, felt more like Space Balls or a parody then a dark, serious film. There were some good moments but I'm really being generous with a 4. It lacked any kind of plot, the time line which is supposed to happen right after Episode VII makes no sense, the First Order recovers in 5 minutes and Hux is finding the hidden, not so hidden base. The main Space Chase was just an awful plot device. I mean ships and people were jumping on and off of the Resistance and First Order ships in that sequence and Tie fighters destroyed the bridge of a ship, almost killing Leia, but no let's just chase them till the run out of gas? The ending was interesting and introduces us to new abilities in the force and the throne room scene with Rey and Kylo was awesome but outside of that the movie was 70 minutes too long, 100 jokes too many, and sought to do nothing then smash the die hard fans construct of the Star Wars universe. Disney is taking this series in the direction of it's Marvel films, so expect cheese, no plot, no real meat to the stories. Expand

What isn't rehashed from the original trilogy is lifted from Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. There are enormous plot holes. Perhaps the worst was what they did with the last cruiser. If that was possible, why didn't they do it earlier? It makes screeching tonal shifts from the silly to the supposedly serious. The light sabre action is less exciting than in either of the other two Star Wars trilogies. I wouldn't like more Revenge of the Sith wire-fu. Return of the Jedi and The Phatom Menace got this right. This review is probably going to get shuffled into the other reviews, but for those reading, this movie is not good. Lets start with the positive; the visuals. This movie has some of the best visuals of the Star Wars franchise, and it is probably one of the best looking movies of all time. But the rest of the film is not very good. The characters have changed for the worse, it is riddled with plot holes and things that don't make sense, and it is full of awkward moments as this film desperately wants to be Marvel. This film is mostly harmless, but they really messed up the characters in this one, especially Luke. This kinda breaks continuity with the rest of the franchise. I was not expecting some Oscar-worthy, mature-audience-oriented film, but I was expecting something fun that maybe I could see myself watching a few extra times over the years and maybe, just maybe, answered a few of my theories the way I wanted to see them answered. Some say I set my expectations too high, but after seeing The Force Awakens about 10 times and loving every minute of it I expected more than this. As a Star Wars fan, I would give it an even lower rating but I'm trying to be objective here. It wasn't just a bad Star Wars movie, it was a bad movie in general. I see a lot of TLJ haters commenting on bad acting, forced humor, the critters, the fact that they thought TFA was bad...in my mind all of this could have been forgiven with enough good stuff. I loved the critters, they were some of the better moments. What really bothered me were the lack of good lightsaber battles (not a SINGLE clash of blades), the terrible Rose and Holdo characters, the so-called "bold" moments when the director ended storylines without any warning or payoff....I could go on and on. I agree with the majority of the negative reviews here. There just wasn't enough good to make up for the bad. I'm as entitled as anyone else to leave a review. I'm allowed to dislike the movie as much as you might like it. I could write a novel on why this is the worst Star Wars film ever made, but it would be a waste of time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would give this is a 5.5/10. I really loved some moments in this....and equally despised some others. I agree with a lot of what Kenny said above. Some really beautiful moments that overall were ruined by a hugely contrived plot.

What I enjoyed
1) I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. Luke, Kylo, Rey, Leia, even Snoke were all great in this.
2) The fight between Rey, Kylo and the guards was great.
3) Luke's force projection for his end fight was fantastic. I always felt that this was how strong force users would fight, not with a lightsaber (i.e. Yoda in the prequels). Well done.
4) Great visuals overall. Crait was beautiful.
5) I liked how Luke harped on how the Jedi order was flawed. It gave voice to my distaste of the Jedi as they were portrayed in the prequels. Again, Luke is fantastic in this.
6) It at least didn't feel to me like this was a rehash of any other Star Wars movie. Rian did move the series in directions I didn't expect.

What I did not enjoy
1) Poe/General Hux opening exchange was really corny to me and set a tone right off the bat where I felt uneasy with what was to come. Domhnall Gleeson is flat out miscast for this part IMO. He's a great actor in other movies but in this series is whiny and not intimidating at all as I would think a leader of the first order should be.
2) Supergirl Leia. For her to survive the explosion, then decompression, then come flying back to the ship like she's from Krypton just felt so un-Star Wars to me. Thought I was watching a Marvel movie at that moment.
3) Bombers that require a person to manually release the bombs...really? This isn't WWII. Also, could they have been any slower?
4) The use or non-use of shields, cloaking. Some ships had shields (resistance), others didn't (dreadnaught), some ships were cloaked....their use just seemed to be there to support the contrived plot.
5) The long chase between the first order and resistance....hugely contrived in my opinion. Kenny explained this well above...non use of tie fighters to attack, why didn't some of the FO destroyers jump ahead to cut off the resistance, etc etc etc. Just dumb. And then the resistance need to send someone to find a slicer, board the Super star destroyer, slice into....just dumb. All of this was lazy writing with huge holes.
6) Canto Bight was unnecessary. Although I didn't mind the design etc, it did not add much to the story. See point above.
7) So Luke dies because....he's worn out? Lame, I immediately thought of Padme dying from a broken heart. Felt really contrived to me.
8) The destruction of the FO fleet by the resistance carrier going to lightspeed spits in the face of every other star wars battle ever. Why didn't they use similar tactics to destroy the death stars, etc. And why didn't she do this earlier? Or use the medical frigate first to do this before it runs out of fuel. Dumb
9) Rose. Although I liked her at times, her exposition at other times (being the moral compass that she was) felt really hamfisted and preachy at times.

Did anyone else think Yoda looked odd? I enjoyed his part in the movie but to me, his cgi seemed off.

Overall, I'm just kind of disappointed. There were glimpses of a truly special all time great movie in here.....but some of the lazy writing for particular plot points really ruined it for me. Perhaps I'm too picky, I don't know.

Just my 2 cents.

The storyline with Kylo Ren and Luke is believable and brilliantly done, and his relationship with Rey is well executed too. But that's only one of about 4 storylines in the film and the rest are garbage. Finn goes from being one of the funniest, most charismatic characters in Force Awakens to a bland space eater generic supporting hero. It's also full of plot holes and squanders some of the most interesting characters that the last film introduced, not to mention the most boring chase sequence I've ever watched.
My girlfriend, who had never seen Star Wars before we started dating liked it. It made me furious, and it's probably the only Star Wars movie that I won't return to see a second time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Made an account just to write about this movie. What an absolute disappointment. "The director took risks" is a good way of saying that the director went in directions that made little to no sense. The only excitement in this movie was seeing how kylo ren's story line played out, and that was weak too. The fact that this movie currently has an 86 on metacritic makes me completely skeptical of movie reviews as a collective. There are parts in this movie that are insanely cool, but those parts are lost in a sea of weird plot turns and a weak narrative that is largely based on hyperbole. If you split the two main narratives of this movie in half, one was a complete waste of time while the other lead up to nowhere. To end this review I'm just gonna say, they made luke skywalker a complete loser in this movie and Disney is going to drive this franchise into the ground. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG i'm stunned like in shock. WTF where Disney thinking and how could Mark Hamill read that script and agree to it is money really worth it its like you sold your soul to the Devil Mark shame on you. Even my childhood hero can be corrupted by money! And Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson i have no words its like you purposely set out to destroy the greatest movie series ever with you SJW BS and the liberal leftist propaganda just forcing it down peoples throats that's why Donald Trump won because the ordinary person is just sick of it! Princess Leia is now a General cause of course woman can be Generals as well(in real life no woman has ever been a General BTW). And you wait 40 years to see Luke all mighty God powerful, instead he's some old loser lives in a cave and rejects the Jedi's. Oh and Han Solo is portrayed as a dead beat dad in TFA must just be a coincidence all our role models are made to look like loser straight white males. Kylo Ren looks and acts terrible. Who's Rey's parents who was Snoke, we don't know cause you never told us. Finn is terrible and of all the Asian actresses they pick a overweight hero feminist who kisses the black man, and Rey kisses the black man Finn as well so it ticks a lot of boxes. The casino scene is a clear dig at Capitalism i mean the politics are just out of control. In the next Star Wars movie I know what happens so I don't have to watch it. Chewbacca gets a sex change and is now called Chewniqua and Lando Calrissian comes back to protest out in the street about the evil Empire and the Stormtrooper's brutality. General Leia flies out of her grave and becomes President of the Galaxy and we all live happily ever after in peace now a woman's in charge. Shame on you Disney you are a disgrace to the Movie business and the Star Wars legacy. And too all the kids, you have been born in the worst time in history and this is a result of people like me sitting back and saying nothing while liberals have taken control and seek to destroy everything about our way of life. For that I humbly apologise. Expand

You see character development of the two leads all stuff critics love.
However when Mark Hamil complained about the script - Disney executives rave about the brave new choices and direction of the script with unusual decisions for the Star Wars films. You can spot why fans of the universe are not happy. In the post-truth era, this means they must be Russian bots, I would have thought it should be trekkers if anyone but hey why ruins the Disney narrative especially as Cineplexes and Critics need to bow to the Disney/Pixar/Marvel machine or miss out. This says everything you need to know - this is not episode eight but the marketing department of Disney making the choices and decisions for the universe. As a standalone film - it is just okay, Star Wars has always had the love of fans and forgiveness of the fans for the absurdness of the scripts and ropey dialog - for every Jar Jar Blinks there is a Darth Maul. The universe is about hard work, self-sacrifice (Jedi) and good versus evil (Sith, who take the easy route). This film just throws that out and humanises the leads making them conflicted and unsure of themselves.
Without this trade-off of good versus evil, hard work vs easy route, all the absurdities and many pointless subplots, undeveloped characters obviously just inserted for their merchandising potential, the film just jars. Lots of new characters, lots of artsy shots, lots of humour (but not Thor quality) but nothing cool. Ships which require large crews to man and pilot - are suddenly performing massive manoeuvres which they previously were unable to complete with just one person standing in the middle of the bridge. The entire might of the first order is brought to bear on a single base - with a blast door. So this might of six plus destroyers is reduced to less than a dozen walkers and a single blast cannon. Even for Star Wars this is the least believable with the most glaring plot holes and absurdity - people who were not Force users in the seven previous films suddenly have the ability to fly through space, blow blast proof doors aside and no longer need to be able to breathe. The force is no longer a fabric of the universe and just a virus that randomly selects people and makes them so powerful that they no longer need to train or develop or learn. You just destroy all previous knowledge and millennia of knowledge - hard work is not needed anymore. The force is now fit for the snowflake generation. Some ships are going so slow that they are almost going backwards and the first order can't shoot a cruiser because it is too fast but said cruiser can't even inch any further away.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stars Wars as a franchise has hit the same problem all episodic franchises (Star Trek, The Walking Dead, the WWE) eventually hit, the story has been told so often by so many diferent people, writers run in to walls trying to keep it fresh. As such, rather than work on a thoughtful retelling (which will label them as copycats) or working within the mythology to bring about logical change, they instead settle on the swerve. While a swerve can be done to great effect and still work with in narrative (The Original Planet of the Apes, The Sixth Sense) all too often it is used to hide a poor plot or lack of a real direction in a story. I would argue that is what Rian Johnson did in the Last Jedi. *Spoilers*
Having Luke become a bitter and despondent character was a bold move, and Hamill, to his credit, did an excellent job with the portrayal. However, it was a change that did little to help the story and was promptly forgotten about when he suddenly changed his mind in a swerve that seemed only there to allow the epic battle to take place. The betrayal of Snoke by Ren was a swerve that mirrored the betrayal of Return of Jedi, and while making Kylo a better character did so at the expense of The Force Awakens. (To be fair, I didn't care for the Force Awakens, so seeing that movie cheapened wasn't a great loss) It hurts the overall narrative of all the stories in a franchise when such things happen. If you doubt it, try watching the Godfather III. The swerve to make the entire side quest to the Casino meaningless was, quite frankly, baffling. It seemed as if Rian Johnson literally had no idea what to do with the characters and the screen time put into it could have been spent elsewhere to much greater effect. Putting aside the short (albeit cringe-worthy) shot of Leia's survival in space. The swerve of her surviving seemed to cheapen the moment. Epecially when you consider the only Leia we can get from this point is some CGI painting. Needless to say, by the time Luke found his way to the the resistance, it was painfully evident that some swerve was coming. And Rian Johnson all but used the most painful, laziest, most overused swerve of them all....it was just a dream. I know, technically it was a force projection, but it all amounted to lucid dream. Luke wasn't there, it was stalling tactic, and he was ok. Except he wasn't. Throwing yet another swerve in, Luke dies, becuase... well..no reason. Just kill the past as the movie says (except for Leia). I think that proffesional critics gave the film good reviews because anytime a movie can suprise them, it is a welcome change. What they seemed to forget is a story needs more than a plot twist to be good.

Unfortunately after seeing The Last Jedi I have nowhere near as much enthusiam for seeing the next film. If I could describe The Last Jedi in one word it would be "Dissapointing". I feel like this film could of been so much more but ultimately fell flat in meeting my expectations. While there were some fun and visually appealing scenes throughout the movie they didn't make up for rest of the films weaknesses. I guess I could say this film lacked the spirit and fun the other films had ( Yes even the prequels ). It almost didn't feel like a Star Wars film at times but something else entirely different. It seems like the writers for this film couldn't decide what they wanted this film to be and after running out of time put out this jumbled mess. Ramblings aside, I can only hope the next film is able to redeem the franchise and if not I won't be tuning in for anymore Star Wars films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was BAD! What were they thinking. Well here are the things I didn't like.
The movie did not know when to end! I swear the final action was in the 3rd act then it just ended like we survived luke died let's go to are base. But when Luke died they were just like yeah I felt him die whatever, they did not even cry one tear. They did end with a lightsaber fight, but when Luke was cut in half by Kylo ren his body doesn't fall off it's just a holograph. How Luke actually dies is by killing himself. He jumped off the mountain. Why would he do that? The reason why Ben solo go's to the dark side is plain stupid. Luke tries to kill him cause he saw evil in him, but Kylo just tries to kill Luke then kills every student jeez. It was blatantly obvious rey was going to be the last Jedi. They don't do any twists and they act like rey is definitely going to be the last Jedi when they could make her act like a brat. The story is obvious. It's obvious Ben solo would kill snoak cause he wants to be in charge. This movie just sucks The things I liked. The characters where consistent the parts with Finn and rose are good Poe Dameron was good and the acting was fine.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So what do I think of the newest Star Wars adventure?

Fun to watch, but not great overall. And definitely the worst the Star Wars product Disney has put out so far.

The biggest problems with the movie can be divided into 2 categories: movie filler and character mismanagement.

The first major problems with the Last Jedi are pretty much universally agreed upon and there are few defenders.Trying to sit and watch this film makes the problem very clear. Seriously, there is at least 1 hour of useless plodding that contributes almost nothing to the movie. There is a good movie somewhere in all this footage. However you will have to sit 2 and 1/2 hours to see it.

And if you think that is bad you should see how it treats the original trilogy characters. The sin of legacy character mismanagement and just poor character writing is much more bothersome to me and other long time fans.

Luke, Leia, and even Chewbacca are poorly written and untrue to their portrayals in the original trilogy of Star Wars movies. This not only hurts the interest of fans in this movie but how people will now look at the Star Wars franchise as a whole. And Despite what the Holly-Wood writers say, the character portrayals aren't just fan complaints that need to be blown off. I imagine the long term financial prospects of The Last Jedi are hurt by this corporate decision making.

Luke is a weakly sarcastic humdrum Ebeneezer type character that is almost 180 degrees of difference in philosophy and morality. His backstory plot and his decision making for most of the film is very un-Luke Skywalker like. Yes there is a cool moment at the end of the film, but even here The Last Jedi disappoints. The one time that we actually get to see Luke get off his couch, take a shower, and actually help turns out to be a nothing but a mirage.

Spoilers,he literally turns out to be a mirage.

There are powerful moments for Mark Hamill to strut his acing ability, and there this film doesn't disappoint.Hamill has for decades proven himself one of them most capable actors in venues like dubbing animation, and audio plays. It is nice to see he gets a chance to shine.

However, we don't get the same opportunity to watch the usually funny and powerful late actress Carrie Fisher. Here Leia is indecisive, quiet and plays little into the decision making of the resistance when she does manage to speak. It is obvious that the footage they did get of the late awesome actress was much less than the PR Disney wanted us to believe. And this movie is all the poorer for it.

To make up for this, a new actress is cast to play the lines Fisher couldn't and it doesn't help much. The Purple Haired general is probably the most forgettable character for the amount of screen time given in this movie. A weak sub-plot involving her and the character Poe is not only boring, but nonsensical and riddled with plot holes. Even the great sacrifice this character makes is hard to watch and does little to redeem her.

I hope dear reader you noticed that I haven't yet nodded to the extremely strange and disbelief killing parts of this movie. In particular, the scene where we actually get to see Leia use the force turns out to be this weirdly whimsical resurrection in the style of Marry Poppins. Plus the time Luke milks an alien walrus, or Yoda helps Luke in a book burning. The last of which bothers me more than probably anything else.

No way in ewok hell would Yoda ever try to destroy the legacy of the Jedi nor authorize book burning of any kind. But this is exactly the thematic message that Star Wars know wants us to understand.

To quote Kylo Ren: "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to". Isn't that the same message that fascistic nations and dictators want their citizens to believe. If Hitler was in the theater I could imagine him giving a thumbs up.

I doubt I'll be able to sit-down and happily watch this film again in the same way I do for all of the other films. This movie really has damaged my love for the Star Wars franchise. The prequels which I overall enjoyed and often made fun of; never spat upon the legacy and beloved characters of the original trilogy. Jar Jar never took away from the dynamic story and character that is Luke Skywalker. This movie does, and does it with pride.

Yet I still recommend most people to go see Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It is a visually stunning film, and the Rey/Kylo Ren storyline is entertaining and thought provoking; even if it concludes with the wrong sentiment. Just be prepared to wait 2 1/2 hours to see it, and know coming in that you will hate what they do to the old Star Wars crew.

If you can stomach all that the let the Force be with you. (as if I could of ended with anything else ;0)

The result is a surprisingly ponderous outing - more like Lost in Space than Star Wars. The way characters seem to talk at each other rather than to each other is both frustrating and unengaging. Better summarised elsewhere as a sort of 'galactic wheel-spin', none of the array of often irrelevant sub-plots ever lead anywhere, playing the 'it isn't what you thought' card again and again, but crucially without bringing anything truly new to the table. Because of this, its extremely glib treatment of the material often falls flat and its self-aware humour tends to undermine what dramatic tension remains. While the film is at pains to 'throw away' and 'kill' the past mythology built up by George Lucas, what there is leans heavily on its tropes and imagery. The final image of dreaming youth almost suggests that what we have here is a multi-million dollar fan film - but one that forgets to inspire the same dreams and feelings in its audience. Since the film leaves you not knowing what the resistance or the first order are for and really not caring anyway, the story just seems to fade and patter out (just like one of its principle characters), rather than leave you wanting more. I could not disagree more. As a person who had nothing against the Force Awakens' oft-maligned themes of diversity, I found Rian Johnson's addition to the Star Wars universe a convoluted mess. Outside the story-line revolving around Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren, the movie was incredibly underwhelming, obviously plagued by disjointed and uneven writing. There are some strong moments in The Last Jedi, but overall, the movie is a very sloppy sequel as well as a fairly mediocre standalone movie. Claiming that you are going "postmodern" on the franchise is hardly an excuse for average execution, and no grandstanding by critics from their ivory towers will change the fact that Johnson's movie is one of the weaker additions to the Star Wars franchise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Folks, you simply must embrace the fact that the magic of the original trilogy can never again be recreated - they were a product of love and passion. There was nothing to obstruct creative vision. No toy sales (at least not until RoTJ), no return on investment, no cooperate interference...
And once that is accepted, I can go into these new series of films and embrace them for what they are. It isn't a terrible movie. I am a sucker for mezmarizing visuals and technical achievements in films, and so I can forgive, at least somewhat, the glaring flaws in this movie. Narratively speaking, the story is disjointed, simply because of errors in pacing and the discombobulating bounce between settings and such make things feel complicated. There is no flow. Really, the new cast of characters which JJ focused most intensely on TFA to introduce, are flat, uninteresting, lack charisma and have little shared chemistry. With the original cast gone, it's difficult to envision a scenario which brings me back to this new group. Misplaced humor, character cameos, simply for the sake of throwing a bone at fans, and most of all, a Luke who would never (as we know him) abandon his friend and his cause to rot away in seclusion. It simply is too big a leap in uncharted waters for Luke Skywalker, and the very superficial subplot that is offered up to explain his new-found aversion to The Force and Jedi mastery is flimsy and nonsensical. I have to say this, don't care if it ruffles feathers...Rose is a terrible, useless character. Once these idiots realize that casting actors simply for the sake of diversity or advancing a progressive agenda stagnates character development, we can get back to business. Instead of something interesting, we get, "the first Asian American actress in a Star Wars movie". Never mind the fact that the potential for good, contributing characters is sacrificed simply to satisfy the goal of "first", or to "make history". It's ridiculous. Cast whomever is best for the part, ignore their heritage and gender. Political critique out of the way, I'll leave some final thoughts. Leave expectations at the doorstep. Don't think you'll see any magic, don't believe you'll be enchanted by this installment, like experienced in the OT. Enjoy it for what it's worth - visual stimulation, war, epic combat scenes, and the occasional, brief, bittersweet moment with the fallen star, outgoing cast of characters we all grew to love from the OT.
**EDIT
I for got to add - if you're bewildered by rave critical reviews, it's no mystery. Critic reviews are greatly influenced these days by whatever political narrative is being pursued by progressives. This film was a slam dunk in terms of progressive themes. Of course critics will sing praises, regardless of how well made the film is. The abandonment of classic archetypal elements is the pitfall of these new installments, or at least a contributing factor.

Lacking characters we give a damn about. The SW makers need to go back to what worked for this franchise: use real models (things that look real on screen). Give us characters necessary to the plot, not just to the current "social construct."

The whole story with Finn and Rose was pointless and that makes the film even worse. Why they decided to include that and make a new character so annoying is just baffling to me. I have no idea how they plan to fix this for the final film but my lord did they screw this film up badly.

This movie gets a 4 mainly for Mark Hamill as Luke.

The end of the movie is where most of the excitement is but it feels like it goes on forever. Some of the main characters feel like they have literally no reason to be in the film and as a sequel to the previous film in the franchise this film falls fairly flat, choosing to drop most of the ongoing questions and plotlines from Episode VII rather than progress them. On the other hand the film is pretty well directed and shot, most of the performances are between OK and good and the film is pretty enjoyable, even if the enjoyment is ironic sometimes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had some great moments and some awful moments, unfortunately the awful outweighed the good. I went in with high expectations due to my love of Star Wars and because of my high confidence in Rian Johnson. I was left disappointed due to a weak plot and dragged out unnecessary storylines for Finn, Rose and Poe. Rose and Holdo were bad characters with weak dialogue and did not feel as if they fitted in with the rest of the film. I enjoyed Luke's storyline up until the end as I thought he would be given a chance to redeem himself. His death (or becoming one with the force) at the end left me very frustrated, as this was not a worthy ending for one of the most iconic characters in pop culture.
However film wasn't all bad as the storylines and characterisations for both Rey and Kylo Ren were great. Kylo is quickly becoming what Anakin should have been in the prequels. Adam Driver's performance is incredible and he makes Kylo's struggle between the light and dark very genuine. Daisy Ridley also gives a good performance and helps develop Rey into a much more fleshed out character. Overall this film left me disappointed at Lucasfilm/Disney and Rian Johnson for their lack of respect for Luke Skywalker and to the classic Star Wars fans. However the film was not all terrible as it did expand on the two most important characters in the new trilogy.

Rey still continuing to be a mary sue = bs. Snoke death = BS. Kylo is still weak and whiny. Luke is portrayed horribly and the whole casion arc and Rose is awful

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's pretty mediocre. There are some cool moments, but most of the film leaves a sour taste. It does a discredit to some characters, some plot lines felt so forced and terrible they should not have been in the film (Rose and Finn), too much is not explained and it just felt like quite lazy writing, which cares not for the lore or characters. I’m a SW fan since childhood and actually loved Force Awakens and saw it many times in theater. That movie walked the line between nostalgia and new, but this one seems unconcerned with both. This feels like a reboot of a reboot where they are trying to wipe the chessboard clean and establish some episodic rhythm (as in TV show) instead of what we thought would be a new trilogy with beginning middle and end. Where’s the epic? Where’s the vision? The cinematography was even bland. I was completely unimpressed with the story..... I could go on and on. I always aim to be respectful of other artist’s vision, but this is Star Wars here, if you’re going to buy it for 4 billion dollars I want you to try harder on this story, these movies have the power to inspire a billion people and we deserved a lot better on this one. No emotions, slowest chase in history of cinema. Not needed casino sub-plot. Lack of tension anywhere in the movie. It is perfectly average, gives no emotions (neither bad or good) for me.

Great visual effects and sound stuffs, BUT dumb plot, poor editing, too many unnecessary scenes and stupid. And, I don't need to hear the soundtrack in every minute even if it's a good score.
