This movie was surprisingly bad. The plot makes no sense, I don't care about the characters and everything is pretty dumb. Probably the worst star wars movie (including Solo). To me, this new trilogy is not canon and it never happened.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A satisfying ending to a great Star Wars trilogy. I like Episode IX a lot. If you liked the previous movies, you'll like this one, too. Broadly speaking, The Rise of Skywalker is what you would expect from a Star Wars movie. Great visual and special effects, amazing action scenes, cool lightsaber fights, great space battles, fitting soundtrack. My favorite scene was the long duel between Rey and Kylo Ren. I wasn't bored at any point during this film and I was entertained by all the action. This is what matters the most to me.

The story, on the other hand, is a matter of preference. I'm not a fan of all the decisions they made, but I wouldn't say they're "wrong" or "bad". A lot of people are understandingly torn on the Palpatine plot. It does feel kind of rushed and unestablished. But it didn't bother me that much. I just liked seeing him blast all those ships with Force lightning. As far as Kylo Ren's story is concerned, I'm pleased with how it ended. He redeemed himself in the end, then became one with the Force.

Rey's story I feel like is just beginning. She let go of the past. She's very powerful. She has her own lightsaber which is yellow. There is so much potential there. I just want to see her unleash her powers in the future trilogy. I want to see her shoot lightning again. I freaking loved the sequels, man. I'm a proud Star Wars fanboy. I can't wait for the new trilogy.

The pacing is simply disastrous, the "fetch quest" plot is miserable to behold and Palpatine returning (why?) completely ruins Vader's redemption in ROTJ.

This was a trilogy of content packed into a single movie and, whilst I have my issues with TLJ, it just felt cheap for JJ to try and undo everything that happened in the previous movie.

The so-called "Skywalker Saga" does not go out with a bang, but a whimper.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is by far the worst Star Wars Movie ever made. It has so much plotholes, so much **** and so many bad and unnecessary characters than all other Star Wars movies together. They just took the Star Wars lore (like in the other movies) and just throw it out of the window. Few examples:
- The whole battle on Exegol is complete trash and braindead
- The whole film takes place in about 20 ours, while traveling to different planets and so on
- characters from 7 and 8 are completely useless and unnecessary (Rose, Finn, Snoke, Hux,...)
- the whole ark about the dagger and the pathfinder is just stupid
- why is there a wreck of the deathstar and why is it not on Endor? - Rey Skywalker just WTF???
- you are free to add more **** here the list might be endless - Rey is just OP and better than anyboy before for no reason The only pros these movies have:
- quite good locations
- it looks pretty nice
- good music/sounds
- thats everything lol

The baseplot that whas made by Episode 7 and 8 was already ****, but they managed to take this baseplot and just flush it down the toilet.
Whoever likes this movie is either not a Star Wars fan at all (maybe the movie is better then) or your focus is just on the visuals and the action, ignoring all the **** around. congratz

Don't support Disney with their new Star Wars, watch the old movies or watch something else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed The Force Awakens and I hated The Last Jedi. Somehow Episode nine may be the worst of them all. The two stooges (Poe and Finn) follow Mary Sue (Rey) on a bunch of pointless quests, planet hopping from here to who knows where all the while being pursued by the guy who killed perhaps most the beloved character in the series, his father Han Solo. Only Kylo Ren is a now a supreme leader who has been given a magical fleet of ships given to him by a returning palpatine. Yes thats right, to completely undo every star wars film before it, to destroy the reason Darth Vader's sacrifice to end the sith was so important, we get Palpatine back. This isn't fan service, no fan would want this. Halfway through the film, Rey appears to fatality stab Ren only to heal him later because she felt his Mom die, they later share a kiss at the very end of the film after which Ren sacrifices himself so she may live. Cool. A lot more could be said about this film but all things considered, perhaps its just best to say less. Expand

Rather then choosing to let the story that Rian Johnson set up in the predecessor play itself out, instead this movie tries to do damage control by retconning nearly every revelation that made episode 8 unique and pushing aside characters who the fandom didn't rave about. Rose doesn't accompany the team on their mission, because she has to study. Can't she just pack her things and study while their traveling through hyperspace? Come on! Rey's parents were nobodys, but now sees the kinda sorta grandchild of Emperor Palpatine. Really? Oh yeah I forgot to mention, Palpatine's back. And that's not a spoiler because it's made perfectly clear from the crawls first sentence that he's back baby and with a whole new fleet of star destroyers with planet destroying weapons. How original. Seem like Palpatine, just like the film makers, are able to discern what tactics are most effect. Anyway why is Palpatine back again. Oh ok we need a new Snoke cause he was kinda chopped in half last time around so now we're going to resurrect the classic Star Wars big bad who Snoke was based on who was thrown down a shaft and blew up, sounds good. Face palm. But don't worry you can join the gang as they go to get the thing that gives them some information about another thing that shows them who to get the other thing that shows them where to go. And watch as the movie expects us to care when all the things go down at the end but really we don't and just want to movie to be over already so we can get the homework done. The only thing holding this thing together is the beautiful set design, cgi, acting, and everything relating to the character of Kylo Ren, but outside of that this film is a complete and total mess. Abrams has once again proven that he is incapable of telling either a Star Wars or Star Trek story without rails. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is an absolute embarrassment. It was tough to believe that Star Wars could sink any lower after The Last Jedi, but Disney has done it again! Not only did they betray the story of the original source material multiple times, the movie couldn't even follow its OWN source material. Almost nothing from the previous two movies effect what happens in this one. Knights of Ren and Snoke? Nope. They don't matter apparently because Palpatine is alive and it was all apart of the "master plan". Palpatine coming back trivializes Luke's journey and Vader's sacrifice. Pathetic attempts at fan service and a horrendous disrespect for the past films makes this movie one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I think the place where this movie shines is in the emotional impact, the parts with Ben & Rey, and Ben speaking with the vision of his father, his redemption, all the past Jedi speaking to Rey, and the ending scenes are all pretty great in my opinion. The concept of the Force dyad and the new properties/abilities displayed in the film, like the force healing and space bleeding into one another, I also thought were cool and perfectly fine. The music of course was fantastic, per usual. And the script being pretty good, fast-paced, humorous, impactful overall. So those are the good points - the bad points, of course, would be the plot/story/lore choices. The way they should have done this instead was:

- No need to bring Emperor back - instead, have Snoke come back. If a previously dead character is going to return, might as well make it be the villain of this current trilogy, say that he was one clone of many, one body of many that Snoke has which he has mastered the dark power to transfer between, alluding to the life transference from the legend of Darth Plageus, etc. And just in general, Andy Serkis is a fantastic badass villain, and I thought Snoke was horrifying, so I would've been cool with that. I've grown to accept the Emperor coming back, but it does indeed take a bit of the significance away from Darth Vader's sacrifice in Episode VI, so they might as well have just had Snoke come back and made him more dreadful/horrible in some fashion.

- The star destroyers all having death-star capable cannons - not necessary, just have them be a giant fleet of dark Sith ships, period, and that is plenty threatening enough. It beleggers belief by a lot that each of them has a planet-destroying weapon, given the amount of effort we saw in previous films that it took to construct the Death Stars and extract the kyber crystals required to power those lasers. It also would've been cooler if these ships looked slightly more Sith vs just normal standard grey star destroyers, and maybe if they showed the crews manning the ships to be dark cloaked Sith-adherents, vs just normal humans that were somehow chilling under that ice planet's surface for decades. - Finn's character - Poe at least had some semblance of development by us learning of him previously being a spice runner and meeting his old mates and also becoming the new general, but Finn's character felt very underwhelming/not much happened with him. I don't know what, but something significant needed to happen with him

So there's always what-ifs and wishes to be had after seeing how a cherished storyline pans out, but still despite these major plot weaknesses, the entire sequel trilogy and Rogue One are still vastly superior to any recent film since the original trilogy. I just rewatched some of Revenge of the Sith -- and the difference is so striking in the quality of the dialogue/script/general feeling of "is this a quality film or a B-movie" that about every 10-15 seconds, the characters in that film say something stupid or cringe-inducing or community-college-course writing quality that it makes you understand these films must be intended for children. Basically, I could recommend any of episode 7-9 to my non-fan family members without reservations and know they would like or not like them to some degree, but could definitely NOT recommend any of episode 1-3 without majorly couching it in "so, yeah, these movies are bad, but they have very cool action and show the history behind Darth Vader." Essentially the plot of Darth Vader's origin, action/CGI, and actors like Ewan McGreggor and Liam Neeson are the only true good things about Episodes 1-3, versus everything except for major plot points of Episode 9 is good in the new trilogy/Rogue One. And this is coming from someone who still likes the prequel trilogy! But if I liked even the prequels, then these latest films are all superb in comparison, and Rise of Skywalker is no exception despite being the weakest between episodes 7-9.

The conclusion of a saga and so you go through the film, emotionally, very tense and at the end I left the cinema satisfied.

The film is not perfect, neither is this trilogy part of the Skywalker saga, but in the end you got very good Star Wars cinema.

Sure, I didn't like characters like Finn or some dialogues or the sometimes way too fast pacing, but that was bearable.

It clearly outweighs the positives, music, fan service (in a good way), scenery, atmosphere ... just the whole universe. I kept my expectations low because I liked the least of the new episode 7, but J.J. Abrahams convinced me.

I can recommend this film but the expectations should not be very high.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie legitimately ruined my childhood, I grew up with star wars and this garbage movie crapped all over everything I love. I will admit I'm fine with episodes 7 and 8 they're average, but this movie -if I dare call it that- is far from mediocre, and does not belong in the star wars timeline, the only place this dog poop movie deserves to be is the fiery pits of hell. Don't even get me started on the plot, which by the way, a 2-month-old orangutang with every mental disorder known to man could have done a better job on. speaking of said neolithic plot, some plot points that made me lose brain cells include the whole Kylo Ren and Rey romance; the two characters (who have the personality of recycling bins) are trying to rip each other's throats out for the whole movie (which would have been much more entertaining than whatever bullcrap they were actually doing) but at the end, they decide to be friends, and you know what event spurred this sudden change of heart? Rey mortally stabbed Kylo in the stomach then barely healed him then left him for dead on the wreckage of the death star, which makes perfect sense, wouldn't any sane person who got stabbed by some drunk homeless person in an alleyway want to start a family with them. speaking of the death star wreckage this is yet another point in the movie that was horrendous. using a dagger they found on Tatooine's deranged little brother, our band of extremely cliched morons heads to some dumb planet I forgot the name of to find the death star wreckage (which is one of the many cheap examples of money-grubbing fan service in this "movie") and figure out where the mundane McGuffin is. to find it, Girl luke skywalker pulls a ruler out of the hilt of the dagger, and the jagged edges of the dagger line up perfectly with the wreckage of the death star to show where whatever the heck they were looking for was, now riddle me this how, how does a dagger presumably built before the death stars construction pinpoint exactly where the relic is even though the death star was blown up into completely random and jagged pieces and said relic almost would have had to move around a little bit during the explosion? garbage plot points that's how. now I will admit that the fight scene between Rey and Kylo on the death star wreckage is somewhat visually pleasing yet it would have been more if I could see through the tears this horrid movie produced. another thing is why does Han solo -I mean- Poe Dameron says that the stormtroopers "fly now" meaning that this is the first time that the troopers have flown or used jet packs, which is false because the clone soldiers of the galactic republic were using jet packs before this character was even conceived, in-universe and in real life. another thing to add is that there were just random characters who were introduced in this movie and advertised before the movie came out as being major or significant characters, but no, they had like 10 minutes of screen time overall. now I've been avoiding it for too long, the disgusting, monstrous plot point that really sealed the satanic deal for this movie: why and how the actually, definable, frick is Palpatine back. "they used cloning" I hear you say, "his soul left his body" all excuses of what it actually is: greedy fan service, yet I don't recall anyone even mentioning that they wanted to see Palpatine revived, and the reasoning behind that is that nobody did want him to be revived, and nobody who previously didn't want him back is happy that he returned. the message of this movie is to ignore your past and look on to your future or something, I mean I could be wrong, it's not like they slapped it across my face like a dead fish every other scene, but that message is not the best one, would you hire someone who kidnapped fifteen children a few years back but has a had a clean track record since? I would hope not. in the end, this movie is just sad that this is what star wars has become, such a great franchise ruined by corporate greed and attempted fan service, but there is still hope for this galaxy far far away because there is a multitude of star wars stories in all shapes and sizes that can cleanse your weary eyes and mind from the garbage that Rise of Skywalker. I rest my case. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie makes you sick to your stomach if you're a fan of Star Wars at all.

The only way I can make sense of this terrible story is that Palpatine made his daughter to inadvertently kill all of the Skywalkers off. What I can't explain however, is after she kills all of them off she steals their last name. "Rey Skywalker" she called herself at the end of the movie. Darth Jar Jar would honestly be proud of the damage she caused by making it look like an accident.

Rise of Skywalker seems like a series of random encounters, and when the plot would not work, they just said "hey we can just get Leia og Lukes ghost to fill the plothole". Script / story is almost nonexsistent, and even though i dont expect SW to have the deepest og best plot, this is sometimes painful to watch.
So i is SW dead... No I still have hope (in the force) and I think that the Mandalorian is a lot better than the new trilogy.

He launched the final trilogy with a weird pastiche, then dumped that minor disaster into the lap of the actually competent Rian Johnson to clean up. Johnson repaired the damage and laid a solid foundation for a finale, whereup JJ stomped back in and blew it up with this bloated disaster. I say this as someone who has watched Star Wars upwards of 50 times, TESB probably 40, and ROTJ maybe 30 times. I've also found things to enjoy in the second trilogy, inferior though it is. I've watched VII a handful of times, and VIII maybe 7-8 times. IX barely kept my attention through my first and only viewing - I won't watch it again. Expand

Every flash and turn Episode 9 makes feels wrong and incoherent. Overly rushed, and wrapping up a story that never really got going unfortunately, it results in one cheesy final act comparable to Jurassic Park III. The movie isn't a joke, but it thinks it is. I'll give it credit for some visual sequences that dispel cinematic wonder and a tone that J.J. Abrams brings which reignites a life in this trilogy, but everything from the characters to the plot just felt out of sorts. Not a good movie, and perhaps makes more sins than it thinks it's correcting. Poor writing in this one. Expand

It quickly becomes apparent how the sequel trilogy had no initial roadmap to help orchestrate its progression. As a result, The Rise of Skywalker disappointingly ends the sequel trilogy.

To start, the movie's fast pacing caused mental whiplash. It was draining trying to keep up with the nonstop plot progression. And with such a fast-paced narrative, there was no time to dive deeper into the characters, their motivations, and interrelationships. There were also many aspects of the movie that were not introduced, addressed, or concluded. Where were Kylo Ren's guards in the previous movie? How was Rey able to use some of her advanced powers with little to no training? What was Fin trying to tell Rey? Why does Rey always run off on her own, thus putting herself in danger? How did the main enemy collect the needed resources to support their forces? These unaddressed issues indicate a rushed production with little focus on quality.

The combat was laughable. In A New Hope, Obi Wan describes lightsabers as "elegant" weapons from "a more civilized" time. Their lightweight structure allows deft handling and precise combat, as demonstrated in the prequal trilogy movies. Combat in The Rise of Skywalker, however, is abysmal. Instead of gracefully using lightsabers as lightweight swords, actors violently swing them around like heavy baseball bats. It does not honor or align with the content established by previous movies.

Rey is also a poorly written character. Despite being one of the most important characters in the Star Wars universe, there is little to no logical justification as to how skilled she is at flying, sailing, fighting, using the force, etc. Again, sequel trilogy's lack of cohesive planning did not allow for such explanation.

Also, Rey never closes her mouth, and it's distracting.

'They fly now?!'

Seems the writers forgot about those jet-pack clone trooper/stormtrooper variants, as well as well-known bounty hunters such as Jango Fett and Bobba Fett.

Might need to do some more research next time.

I thought The Rise of Skywalker was one of the most respectful endings of any series. It honoured and respected all fans who stuck with the franchise, ending emotionally and neatly.

I found over half of the film had a strong emotional connection. I could not imagine the franchise resolving in any other way, now that I have seen it. I bought it on Blu-ray and just watched it for the first time today. What struck me first was the outstanding cinematography, effects, and sets. It was flawless from start to finish in this respect.

The pacing of the movie was excellent too. It went from one excellent idea and place to another. This aspect had me thinking (while watching) that it was a strong Star Wars entry. However I was wary that it might start falling apart after maybe half way through. However it didn't. It just carried on at a pace, and was joined by strong emotional content. From about half way through, tears started coming more and more frequently. I was a mess by the end, and once the credits rolled I was pretty much fallen apart. It took me away from my daily life and for a while and I did not want to come back. My opinion is that it showed strength, honour, and respect to Star Wars fans. Blazing sci-fi.

That may not be a popular take on this film, but it's mine and I am sticking to it. The characters were all incredibly strong and all got good plot parts. To mirror this the acting was top-notch. For this and it's other qualities I mentioned, it felt like a film that was packed to the rafters.

CGI leia was not a wise move to keep her around and is made worse out of deconstructing her character last movie. if anything having her gone from the story probably wouldve done best instead of trying to keep her around for much longer. reverting luke back to himself here to counter what rian did doesnt really matter too much now cause of how is character is looked at now. chewy as now is barely a character like R2 and lando who only served small roles in the story and werent able too do much. certain characters were in this played no parts and were easily forgotten. its obvious disney had no blueprint on what this trilogy was gonna be and know where it was gonna go from the start. comes of more like a custody battle over the ownership with jj's cancelation of the last jedi. while rian canceled jjs universe from TFA. overall the trilogy is a huge mess lacking anything of quality. if anything this sequel trilogy down the road will be used to show what happens when you let untalented people have control over your work just to try to turn a profit. if anything its just bad movie with nothing really to say or enjoy. its just hollow, soulless, devoid of emotions put out by a corporation that has no more ideas on how to entertain its audience anymore Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went and saw the movie with my family around the time it hit theaters. My expectations were low after the last Disney **** they tried to pass off as a Star wars movie. The plot of The Rise of Skywalker has so many plot holes it's more akin to swiss cheese than a movie plot about space wizards. My experience with the movie wasn't all bad, though. The space battle at the end was the most enjoyable part of the movie. The entire begining and middle of the movie felt like filler. The whole, "I am all the sith; and I am all the jedi" sequence was really cringey and could have been done a lot better. The Reylo fan service at the end could have been left out entirely, as it made no sense at all. Rey and Kylo barely had any "chemistry" if you can even call it that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I could rant for hours about all of this movie's failures, but I'll sum it up pretty quick: The only thing TROS accomplishes is ruining everything the previous two movies set up, continues the Trilogy's trend of wasting its golden cast on characters that continue to do nothing, continues the trend of having no world building in any way whatsoever, and gives Kylo, the only character who ever had any sort of depth, a horrible sendoff in the finale (it also does this to Palpatine too, which is a huge insult to an amazing actor).

HOWEVER, there are two scenes that did work (which were far and few inbetween). The first, the finale where Ben finally gets to be a bad*ss with his blue lightsaber, after spending the entire movie as Palpatine's lackey for unexplained reasons. The second, the scene where Kylo (now Ben) gets to speak to a hallucination of his father in Han Solo, which I found extremely poignant.

But those moments don't make up for a wasteful movie that fails to explain its most important plot points and is absolutely terrified of allowing any stakes to exist. Unless you're the most forgiving fan in the world, stay as far away from this mess as you can.

This whole sequel trilogy by Disney has been such a mess except for the Last Jedi. It feels more like Disney was trying to put in more fan service than try to tell a satisfying conclusion to the saga. This is by far the worse installment in all of Star Wars. Expand

Rey had such potential but they turned her into a Mary Sue, Finn they just shuffled into the back group when he and Rey could have been Jedi together kicking storm trooper behinds! Disney, you messed up but i really hope you can fix it. All I have left to say in the immortal words of Finn "REY!!!!!!" Expand

It doesnt stir you. It doesn't fill you with awe. It doesn't even make you care much who wins, which seems odd for Star Wars. It's very female leadership seems like its desperate to correct some sort of SJW injustice which is also odd because Mon Mothma and Leia in the originals are both women. There are many many weird moments of unexplained nonsense and the tried hard new age mystical inner workings everyone seems to have is just garbage. The droids are cute, I feel bad for Chewie but everything else seems like over acted self depth worship. Even lighthearted jokey blow stuff up Poe turns out to be a secret emo. I kind of feel this film took a big stinky one on the original films. They have damaged the possibilities of the whole by closing it with a very narrow and unsatisfying poop. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Far and away the worst Star Wars feature film in the main storyline. It has "Skywalker" in the name but it blowtorches the Skywalker legacy. Kylo is rendered an impotent ass who loses every single fight, Rey is an overpowered Force demigod, Rose and Finn are forgotten and Poe doesn't evolve from his experiences in TLJ. And we can't forget bringing back Palpatine, the worst story decision in the history of the franchise. The visuals are fantastic and the action fast-paced, but it leaves you feeling hollow, not only for the 2+ hours you've wasted trying to digest everything in this film, but for investing decades into a story that now means nothing. Everything that was built in the original films and even the prequels is annihilated to give Rey a yellow lightsaber. Characters like BB-8, R2-D2, Chewbacca, are merely eye candy. The only achievement this film has to its name is that it somehow made The Last Jedi, itself a gross failure of story, seem better by comparison. Expand

I very poor ending to George Lucas's opus. JJ Abrams is indeed the killer of franchises.
