The best Spider-Man movie there is. Even though its the oldest live-action Spider-Man movie it feels so substantial and well made in every aspect. The character evolution of Peter Parker feels organic and believable. The villain backstory isThe best Spider-Man movie there is. Spider-Man does great job in bringing the webslinger into the big screen and paves the way for the comic book movie craze in the 2000s. Tobey Maguire will always be the Spider-Man I grew up with and Williem Dafoe is fantastic as the Green Goblin. The action sequences are well-choreographed and hold up well for the most part, especially the final fight scene. The cinematography is dazzling to look at and the editing keeps the movie at a nice pace. The story is also well-written, as it manages to flesh out the characters and the world of Spider-Man. This film will always have a special place in my heart and it still remains one of the best superhero origin films ever made.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This first installment of Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is a strong and engaging outing for the character. The story, writing, directing, action and acting are all really good. Even the effects are pretty good, which is impressive considering that this movie came out in 2002, 6 years before the MCU started with Iron Man. Tobey Maguire does a great job with portraying Peter Parker and embodying the nerdiness and awkwardness of the character and also showing Peter’s character development once he becomes Spider-Man. The dialogue and chemistry allow the scenes in this movie to flow really smoothly and make it very easy to watch. Norman Osborn is an interesting antagonist played well by Willem Dafoe since this is an uncommon instance where we see how a villain becomes a villain. Norman is intriguing because he isn’t inherently evil in this film and it’s nice to see how he becomes an antagonist. The other substantial actors and supporting cast all give nice contributions to the movie and are able to inject humor at some parts. This movie has depth and a lot of stuff going on in it but yet still feels like a humble movie. It doesn’t go overboard with fancy special effects and does its best to not get overcomplicated and be a bit relatable. Peter is experiencing typical teenage boy problems: balancing school and his “extracurricular commitments” with trying to get the girl. This leads me to my biggest criticism of the movie: Tobey Maguire wasn’t a teenager when he played this part. He was in mid-20s (I believe) when this movie came out, and it might’ve been nice to see a younger face play the part so the whole teenage struggle component would been even a bit more relatable. That said, the film ends on a satisfying note while still leaving plenty of room for more storytelling. It leaves the door open for sequels without ending on a cliffhanger or a teaser and creating real incentive for a sequel to happen. This film overall is nice structurally and well executed and I recommend it anyone who’s a fan of the titular character but is also interesting in checking out some Marvel films from the beginning of the 2000s.… Expand

As someone who has read the original comics, I can very much see what all changes have been brought in this movie from the source material. And they have done it absolutely correctly. And they have done it absolutely correctly. It seems better to see Peter Parker as someone who chooses to use his proto suit to fight in a cage match than to see him as a celebrity. The scene of Uncle Ben being shot down by a thug was really emotional to see, as he left the message for Peter - "With great power comes great responsibility".

Peter is left to choose his own destiny as a high school teenager who has to deal with a death in the family, his career after school and being a new hope of humanity. At many points throughout the movie I felt that if I were him I would have been completely broken. But that's exactly what makes him a hero. He deals with all the situations and makes it look so simple.

I even feel bad for Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. He had worked so hard on his project but finally it was suspended. He was struck with grief and then the next moment he's the iconic Spider-Man villain. Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin looked way better than the comic counterpart. And his motivations were exactly like how we'd expect Green Goblin to be like.

Spider-Man is one of those movies I often come back to see from time to time. I really like how the very first Spider-Man movie has set a benchmark for the future movies. It looks absolutely natural and has pretty good CGI for its time. The visual tone and colour palette are absolutely like an early 2000s film. It's a must watch movie for anyone starting to see Hollywood movies.… Expand

That being the case let's get down to brass tacks folks... the Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies continue to take a big fat steaming **** all over the newer Tom Holland films. Nothing against that dude but the newer films, no matter how flashy, can't hold a candle to the heart and soul that the Sam Raimi Spiderman films have. This film is from a bygone era. Emotionally deep, weighty, and rich. Cinematically beautiful and well executed. Musically gripping. The giant pools of intense sorrow and love and hate that are the eyes of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The cheesy lines... ALL the cheesy lines. This movie is IT folks, it really is it. Action, consequence, responsibility, death. It's all here. The second one is great too, probably better. The third is kinda meh, but still better than the new Avengers-Spiderman-Ironman movies.… Expand

The plot is entertaining yet so simple. Tobey Maguire is still the best Spider-Man and Willem Dafoe is the best Green Goblin. The casting choices were stupendous and so were the performances. Whatever flaws this movie has, I'd still give it a 9/10.

Shocked by pain and eager to put his powers to good use without revealing his true identity, he designs a red and blue costume with the effigy of a spider. The Spiderman trilogy acquires meaning thanks to the hand of a great director like Raimi, who manages to shoot the only cinecomics he has ever been able to appreciate. I love this movie. I was a little older than Tobey Maguire when this film came out and now I look at it with a lot of nostalgia. This film was released right after 9/11 when everyone needed a little cheering up. It's set in Queens, New YorkI love this movie. It's set in Queens, New York and there's even a scene filmed in Forest Hills. I love how funny it is and any nerd or bullied kid can identify with Peter Parker. It doesn't take the superhero stuff seriously, which is why it's so much fun. This film came out way before shallow superhero movies invaded all the theaters and made life miserable for people who wanted "real life" depicted in film instead of endless escapism.… Expand

Truly amazing. Well written and shows how human Peter is. That is why people like Peter Parker, he's a relatable guy. The cast was perfect and if I had the time, I would probably watch it over and over again.

I have started a Spider-Man rewatch in occasion of the release of NWH and I'm amazed at how little I actually remembered about this movie. Today I had the same feeling after so many years, despite the outdated CGI and VFX which were actually pretty impressive for the time.
Tobey Maguire's acting is pretty impressive in spite of his meme status. Willem Defoe is as astounding as ever.
The story, the soundtrack, the dialogues make this the perfect superhero film.
I'm surely biased by my own feelings of nostalgia, but Spider-Man belongs to my favourites list - where it has been for the past 20 years.… Expand

Breaking with usual tradition, the "Spider-Man" DVD was released today, a Friday. At around $15 almost everywhere, for the 2 disk set, it was too good a bargain to pass up. I hadn't seen the film in theaters so this was my first viewing.Breaking with usual tradition, the "Spider-Man" DVD was released today, a Friday. At around $15 almost everywhere, for the 2 disk set, it was too good a bargain to pass up. I hadn't seen the film in theaters so this was my first viewing. Definitely entertaining, with a good mix of action and budding romance, the film of the beginnings of Spider-Man. Although I was a bigger fan of Superman as a kid, I also have good memories of the Spider-Man comics, and this film is very faithful.

no SPOILERS here - The 2 disk DVD set is one of the better ones. The picture itself is extremely sharp, and very colorful, with a very clear and dynamic Dolby 5.1 sound track. Surround sound complements the picture masterfully, so that the viewer seems right in the middle of the action. **POINT** - As I have explained in other reviews, anyone still watching movies at home on VHS needs to get rid of it now! It is a different movie on DVD, the quality of the picture, the quality of the sound, not to mention all the extras. With a widescreen TV it is almost like being in a theater.

The EXTRAS - In addition to the movie, disk one has a feature that pops up a spider icon at certain spots that, when "clicked", jumps you to a brief "making of" segment for that scene, then jumps you back to the movie. Plus there are two different, selectable commentaries for anyone who likes the re-watch a movie and hear what went into its making.

Disk two is completely devoted to "extras", like screen tests, an HBO special, and other aspects of making "Spider-Man." Also included is an archive of Spider-Man comics covers from the 1960s to now, grouped by decade, and written script to summarize the basic story of each issue. A "must have" for all Spider Man comics fans.

There have been a few user reviews on IMDb, usually very short, which trash this movie, and may even say something like "avoid this movie". Be certain those are "bogus" reviews, written for some deceptive purpose, I know not why. For anyone who enjoys any kind of fantasy action movie with a good message, "Spider-Man" is a definite "must-see."… Expand

Good story. After me and my brother came back from summer vacation in Rio De Jinaro, my dad made us lunch and we watched a movie together on Netflix. We found Spider-Man and we chose to watch that movie because back then, me and my brotherGood story. We found Spider-Man and we chose to watch that movie because back then, me and my brother loved Spider-Man. After the film, I was absolutely shook. I can’t believe we actually chose that film. That was an amazing. I was only 9 when I saw this movie and for the past few weeks, I’ve been watching the film over and over again. It was definitely one of the best superhero films my nine-year-old self has ever seen. Five years later and I still love the film so much. Sam Raimi is the perfect Spider-Man director. No one has done a better job with a Spider-Man film than Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson), James Franco (Harry Osborn), J.K Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), and William Dafoe (Norman Osborn/Green Goblin) did an amazing job in this film.

Spider-Man Even though, Tobey Maguire was almost 30 the time this film was released, he was a perfect Spider-Man. He did an amazing job playing as Peter Parker even before he got his powers. Tobey’s Peter Parker looked like a geek in the beginning of the film and that’s EXACTLY what I’d want to see in a Spider-Man film. Spider-Man’s suit in this film is absolutely beautiful and a perfect Spider-Man suit. It definitely looks uncomfortable in there, but who cares? It looks badass. Uncle Ben and Aunt May in this movie were also amazing. Uncle Ben’s death was honestly the saddest scene in a Marvel movie. The look on Ben’s face before he dies makes you wanna tear up.

I don’t have much to say about Spider-Man, all I know is that it’s an amazing superhero movie and definitely worth watching.
