The biggest change is obviously Spider-Man’s inclusion in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Homecoming embraces this right from the outset.

Both Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and the film’s antagonist Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, feel as if they are living in the shadow of The Avengers.

While this idea of the working class hero vs the working class villain (both of whom are deemed unimportant by the Tony Stark’s of the world) is a good way of framing Spider-Man’s world in a wider context, it does feel a little reductive.

In previous versions of Spider-Man we are used to him being a big deal. He sours through New York’s sky scrappers, saving the day from world ending catastrophes while the public argues about his role as a vigilante and savoir. This time though, the stakes feel much lower in comparison to the likes of Iron Man and Captain America.

Peter’s main mission in Homecoming is to prove himself to Tony Stark, following his recruitment in Captain America: Civil War. He needs to prove that he has what it takes to become that legendary New York defender that we are used to seeing him as.

From a franchise point of view this is a great idea, it means we have a long journey to go on. With Homecoming, Sony and Marvel have potentially set up the superhero equivalent of the Harry Potter series, allowing us to see an actor mature across a decade of films and grow up on screen, learning from each experience and becoming the hero we always knew he could be.

This fresh take relies on the re-framing of Peter as a high school student, something we have seen in both 2002’s Spider-Man and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. This time though they really nail the high-school aspect of Peter Parker. Rather than 30-year-old actors dressed as teenagers seen in previous iterations, Tom Holland feels like a 15 year old kid, with just the right level of awkwardness and self-doubt.

Holland brings a joy to being Spider-Man that was only glimpsed previously, while at the same time maintaining the morality and compassion that have defined the character for 55 years. Here Spider-Man never feels like a burden for Peter, its something he can’t wait to do.

Likewise Peter’s classmates are re-contextualized. Peter’s relationship with Laura Harrier’s Liz is charming and awkward but never feels like more than a high-school crush rather than a all consuming ‘love of my life’ romance. Tony Revolori’s Flash Thompson is a new breed of douche-bag, a stuck up rich kid who's tormenting of Peter comes more out of jealousy than the more traditional — ‘jock vs nerd’ school bully paradigm. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of Zendaya before Homecoming but apparently she’s a big deal. She plays Michelle, who is a bit of a curve-ball in terms of high-school archetypes, but never the less gets some of the funniest moments of the film.

At the centre of the plot is the class trip to Washington DC, giving us a new visual context for Spidey as he announces himself to the world with a quintessential Spider-Man rescue.

This scene, among others, highlights one of the most jarring changes from an action point of view - Peter’s Stark designed super-suit. The high-tech costume comes equipped with its own on-board AI (similar to Iron Man’s JARVIS) and a plethora of new abilities. While all this tech is fun to see and certainly differentiates Homecoming from previous Spider-Men, it can sometimes take away from what makes him an enduring hero.

Creator Stan Lee has always maintained that the reason Spider-Man endures is that audiences can relate to him — he’s just a kid doing what he thinks is right. By giving Peter the Stark suit it takes away from his own unique abilities, in short, it makes it too easy for him.

What stops this from becoming a film-ruining issue though is the filmmakers clear understanding of Stan Lee’s creation. When it comes to it, Peter will find the strength to do the right thing, both morally and physically, and that is what makes him a hero.

In a key exchange with Tony, Peter confesses — ‘I was just trying to be like you’ to which the mentor replies ‘And I wanted you to be better’. By the end of Homecoming Peter has proved not only that he has what it takes to step up to the Avengers level, but that he is indeed a ‘better’ hero than Tony.

While Stark and the Avengers save the world from messes of their own making, someone has to look out for the little guy. Tom Holland’s Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man is here to stay, the people’s champion in a world crammed with the isolated and often detached heroes of the MCU.… Expand

Spiderman strikes again with an good movie.
The movie has lacked in many elements that make a great film but it still makes me smile in a way. it could have done better scenes and more drama to the film, instead they maked this into like aSpiderman strikes again with an good movie.

Here we are with another Spiderman movie. This is arguably the best acted of the 5 S-M movies so far and with some twists (Aunty Em is young, the connection to the villain, etc.) and a message of income inequality and robin hooding, it's theHere we are with another Spiderman movie. However, the pacing was just really weird. The story the director wanted to tell could have been better produced as a mini-series, especially with the strange development of Peter Parker's school chums. Not bad, not great! One of the best marvel movies for a while. This movie is super fun and action packed and it is the Spider-Man that we wanted to see! The jokes were well placed and seemed to make the movie flow well. Jennifer Connelly's voice over performance as Karen was hilarious and fantastic. The visual effects and action scenes were awesome and spectacular. This movie is definetly not your typical superhero movie, it's not even your typical Spider-Man movie. And because this is the second reboot in recent years, the 'typical Spider-Man movie' is very much a thing. And because this is the second reboot in recent years, the 'typical Spider-Man movie' is very much a thing. Loud action, high stakes and soooo much drama. While Homecoming is not lacking great action sequences or emotional character moments, it feels a lot 'lighter' and 'smaller' than previous Spidey films. However, it is by no means a problem, because this younger version of Peter Parker is much more relatable. He is 'just' a highschool student, who can't even talk to the girl he likes. This movie is so realistic in it's depiction of a modern hero as well as an oh so ordinary modern teenager, that you feel like the MCU has finally crafted a world, that makes seemingly supernatural things seem natural. You feel like you could live in this world.
The entire cast does a great job, even though some characters lacked real development. The jokes are great, not overdone, only sometimes annoying and the comedic timing is on point. There are some great oneliners in this movie! The acting, especially from Micheal Keaton and Tom Holland, is top-notch, some of the best in any Marvel movie. Robert Downey Jr. is used sparingly, but in the most effective way, so the inclusion of his character does not seem forced or like a cheap cash grab. I can't give the movie 10 points, because I felt like the score did not carry the emotional scenes enough and that kinda undermined their impact on the viewer. Music is very important and, except for the great surprise at the beginning of the film, I didn't really like any parts of the score enough to remember them. Other than that, a solid, if not great film and definetely one of the MCU's best!… Expand

Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming is fantastic Spider-Man reboot. I absolutely loved Tom Holland in his debut during Captain America: Civil War and I loved him as Spider-Man even more in this film. I would generally give movies like these a 7. I would have loved to have given this specific movie an 8 because how much I enjoyed it. But because of the trope it inhabits and the liberties that need to be undertaken to make the storyI would generally give movies like these a 7. I would have loved to have given this specific movie an 8 because how much I enjoyed it. But because of the trope it inhabits and the liberties that need to be undertaken to make the story bearable and likable despite their unlikely and leap-y nature, I came down to a 7 as you can see.

Having given that interesting and exciting tidbit about how my mind works when thinking about review numbers, I would like move on to the worded part of my personal opinion about this movie which is, I repeat, I really enjoyed the movie and even more so the cast. The story is fresh reboot devoid of the baggage of the previous editions of the franchise - Marvel couldn't rope in 'their friendly neighborhood Spider-man because Tobey Maguire (I quite liked the original trilogy) was too old to fit in and Andrew Garfield's portrayal was over-the-top, dousing the darkness (with Gwen's death and general loss of life) in such a way that in no way was fit for the MCEU storylines we have come to know. And all that didn't even matter because Marvel hadn't even re-acquired their sold rights during the times these movies were made. Thankfully, this movie definitely comes under the taglines of "everything happens for a reason" and "good things happen to those who wait" (both of these statements are not universal truths at all but do generally make sense because of how human minds and lives work and rationalize our existence). The story is way more high school-centric and the cast feels about in the right age groups which helps immerse the audience in the story as much as they can about flying robots and teenage spider mutants (and taking myself as an example, you could say that the immersion level is quite high since I have always considered it terrific and terrible that Spider-man could exist and world of superpowers was possible). The start to the movie is a cool move on part of the people who made the story possible because it really gives a contemporary to the times sort-of feel and integrates Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland into the MCEU. The fact that Holland has such great chemistry with RDJ and fact that Iron Man's personal stake in Parker's life and story is reaffirmed and plays a necessary part in his struggle to find acceptance for his powers just made it real for me, since Iron Man is where it all began 11 years ago from now (in 3 days, it all comes full circle when I get to rejoice or possibly get terrorized by the arrival of The Mad Titan as Stark and Parker try to fight back). As far as the story goes, it is fairly simple and don't think there is any point to spoil the little things as it far too enjoyable to go in somewhat blind. But it does provide that some room for the actors to flex their skills with a twist here and there.

Personally, I was much more interested and delighted about the cast and what they brought to the table for the story. So, thank you Director Jon Watts and in addition, Homecoming is where you may finally feel at home in Marvel's clutches (despite its money-grubby nature) and that is quite a good place to be before the War based and for the gauntlet which spans Infinity begins.… Expand

Most probably because he has more than five writers contributing majorly on developing a light hearted durable version of our friendly neighbor, that has lately been changing. With these many comic writers, that are mostly averted from their sitcom works for this huge banner film that has actually seen fame through this very character back in 2002, John Watts is simply following the rule, to a degree that his world that revolves around teenagers couldn't even be bratty properly, what a shame.

Revisiting one of the most successful superhero in the box office may not be a good idea, but somehow those filters that bars the imagination of the makers also makes them bulletproof. The history won't repeat itself, and Kevin Feige who has previously worked in the original Tobey Maguire trilogy, clears out all the speculations we have had of this character over the ages. Just freeing those limitations itself helps flow the narration with a quick pace and before you know it, you are having a serious talk with Aunt May played with an hip and happening attitude by Marisa Tomei.

But there is no point involving supporting characters in here, for even the writers never glances twice at them, and this is where the film stands alone in this franchise. Even for a brief period, each of the chapter in MCU feels obliged to include the supporting characters in narration but here, Peter Parker is the target and.. bullseye. For a film of more than two hours, Tom Holland runs on merit and pulls off an entire film on his shoulders, with a compelling performance that shifts according to the tone or maybe he himself controls the tone, after a major fiasco NYC's heartthrob returns home in this Homecoming.… Expand

Unlike most of the other Spider-Man movies this is not cliche, and not even close to having a cheesy ending. Tom Holland is also a nice turn from the ordinary Peter Parker, and he is very charismatic which just adds a lot to the table. Also the fact that all this is now tied in with the big MCu, and Iron Man. The story is really great, but there where a few useless or rather unnecessary scenes. And although, the story is great it's not flawless. So overall it's a good movie, and succeeds in doing so mostly by the fact of this new narrative, and not being cliche at all.… Expand

I was very surprised, I liked the movie quite a lot.

I have to say I expected this to totally suck. I am so tired of Spiderman reboots that I want to scream. I liked Sam Raimi's Spider Man, I hated the reboot and this was seeming on a suckI was very surprised, I liked the movie quite a lot.

I am tired of origin stories, and I am tired of high school and this seemed to be both an origin/reboot and high school characters. I wasn't even sure about going, but the husband wanted to see it so I agreed.

I am glad I agreed, and I can say I was wrong. I am still not keen on high school age. I have a hard time identifying with high school now that I am 3 times the age of the character. However, it was written very well. It did follow some tropes but it tended to write them in a way that kept it interesting. Even his teen angst at being kept back from doing real superhero work wasn't overwhelming and just felt right.

It wasn't a reboot origin story. I had assumed this would be the movie showing how Peter Parker got his powers and arrived at Captain America's movie. I was wrong, this continued after the movie and didn't bore you with flashbacks or callback to his origin. It was refreshing, I liked meeting MJ and his sidekick was pretty damn cool.

The biggest surprise that made it as good as it was, was casting Michael Keaton as a blue collar turned villain. It is the only blue collar bad guy that I have seen that felt right. Keaton is a great actor, the story was written well and I really liked what happened at the end. How he talked with Spiderman and how he dealt with his own family.

I definitely recommend the movie, and I will definitely be seeing the next one that comes down the road.

The good: Michael Keaton, the lack of an origin story on film, and just the acting and writing overall.

The bad: Teenagers, I like it, but I would like it better if they were all adults.… Expand

This film marks the third film in the Spiderman franchise, under the seal of Marvel. In this film, young Peter Parker tries to harmonize his normal teenage life with the action and risks of a masked hero. Contrary to the other films, where he makes memorable actions thanks to luck and a handful of skill, in this film they are the problems that come to Peter.

Tom Holland is a convincing Peter Parker, quite confused about what to do and eager to prove himself before Tony Stark. The actor did a good job and managed to give us a Parker that oscillates between instinctive heroism and insecurity, typical of a boy in his teens. Robert Downey Jr. brings us, as usual in the Marvel film franchise, the iconic Iron Man, which he had already made in other films and which he managed to make self-centered and a demanding mentor. Michael Keaton brought a complex and psychologically rich villain to life, far more than most I've seen in films of this genre, which was extremely positive. I also enjoyed watching the work of, Marisa Tomei and Jon Favreau.

Innovative and ingenious, the film does not explain the character's origins and goes directly to what matters, functioning almost as a sequel to previous films made with this character. At first it was difficult for me to swallow this mixture of comedy and cartoons, and some of the jokes in the film had no effect on me. There is also, clearly, an attempt to moderate the action and fighting scenes that guided previous films and to offer less but good, with good CGI and very realistic visual effects. Excellent photography with vivid colors and good play of light and shadow help to make this film pleasing to the eyes and ears.… Expand

Built on the enjoyable portrayal of the classic hero by Tom Holland, the movie moves away from the classic origin story which is refreshing, bringing the play-boy and billionaire Iron Man into the mix, which surprisingly works for Spider-man, bringing technology and a father figure. As well as being funny and faithful to the comic-book character, the movie brings a horde of talented supporting cast from the new Laura Harrier and Jacob Batalon to the great Zendaya, Marisa Tomei and the promising Micheal Keaton as the Vulture, you're never short of skill no matter how hard you look in Home-Coming. I enjoyed how the modern feel, though felt the final action sequence was dark and confusing. But all in all, this movie was one of Marvel's greatest.… Expand

Seeing his struggle at being a hero yet trying to cope with high school is a side of Peter Parker that we haven't ever seen in a Spider man movie. His interaction with the others feel real and it is great.

The Villain Vulture played by Michael Keaton is a perfect casting. The Marvel movies have been known for their forgettable villains and for this movie the villain is significantly improved. He feels menacing yet has sympathetic qualities that makes us understand why the Vulture does what he does. The side Villain Shocker and the Tinkerer are also there but they ain't really focused on but this is actually fine since trying to focus on multiple villains like the previously awful Spider Man movies doesn't work and it is great Marvel didn't fall into this trap. A minor nitpick is that the movie never really ever states the villains name "Vulture" ever throughout the movie and that doesn't really make sense considering that the Shocker was mentioned.

The score for the most part does the job well and sets the tone of the scene. The only notable song has got to be the orchestral version of the famous Spider man theme and that was a really nice touch.

If there has got to be a flaw for this movie then it has got to be the action scenes. The action scenes in the movie are not bad by any means but they are relatively tamed and not super memorable like Spider Man 2 fight on the building or the train. Overall, it is just great to finally have Spider Man back home.… Expand

Those two things help to get butts in seats, to be sure, but it takes a whole lot more than that to elevate a film to an enduring status above the level of disposable summer thrill. And that's exactly what this movie is: a disposable summer thrill.

Starting with something that works quite well here, the writing is fast-paced and very fun. Spider-Man is finally portrayed in Homecoming as a believable, quirky teenager and the awkward humor serves up just the right amount of cringe to be considered adorable. But in the midst of all the amusement lies a myriad of genre clichés like the carbon-copy love interest, every single high-school-movie trope imaginable, and a villain that (without spoiling anything) ends up having a shoehorned connection of some sort to the hero.

Let's talk about the villain. (I'll be as vague as I can so as to avoid spoilers.) He's probably the most well-developed characters in the film, and is an above-average Marvel villain. He has motives that the audience can sympathize with. He's not evil, but rather a man who turned to wicked means to achieve an end that he saw as good. This could have served to be a great strength for the story by creating a moral dilemma for the audience, but it just fails to do so because aside from motive, his character isn't developed at all. We're told briefly what the purpose of his plans are, but they're just brushed aside as more fight sequences come in. It's like the movie couldn't decide how intelligent it wanted to be and it just wasted so much of its potential moral weight.

Tom Holland does a great job as Peter Parker. He really brings to the screen the Peter Parker from the comics in a way that's truly groundbreaking and refreshing. But aside from him, everyone else just does fine. Nobody's bad or cringe-worthy, but everyone else just phones it in and it becomes hard to care about what's happening because when Peter's friends are in danger we don't really care about them. They're all just wooden filler characters.

Ending on a positive note, the visuals are fun to look at, but I don't really need to say that. It's just kind of expected for superhero movies these days.

In the end, Spider-Man: Homecoming is nowhere near awful. It's a very well-done film! It's hilarious, briskly-paced, action-packed, and Spider-Man is a character that's much more relatable than anyone else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It certainly doesn't even remotely add anything to the world of cinema that we haven't seen before, but the movie knows what it is, and it works very well as high-octane pure entertainment.

This movie blew me away. After liking Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man and holding out hope for the character, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 left me feeling broken on the character, never wanting to see a solo Spidey movie again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a great movie. And why I don't think it's the best Spider-Man movie, it definitely is the best one since Spider-Man 2. Tom Holland is probably the best Peter Parker to date, and he brings a good amount of charm to the story. Vulture is one of the best MCU villains ever, and Micheal Keaton's performance is amazing. I have a few flaws with the movie though. The action is not up to par with older Spider-Man movies, and his high-tech suit and reliance was a little exasperating throughout the first 2/3 of the movie. Luckily, that suit gets taken away from him in the 3rd act, so there's that. Overall I think this is one of Spidey's best movies, but don't go in expecting something like the Raimi films, or you'll be very disappointed.

If your main complaint is that Spider-Man is a teen— well, you must have never read a comic book, then, that's how Spider-Man started. True, he might not be great at decision making and is quite naively realistic, but honestly? Do realize that he's still got two films to make, plus the Avengers one. This is just the beginning of his character in the MCU and he's already begun to grow up a lot. So do wait for it, because everyone knows Spider-Man is the greatest character in the Marvel universe and they wouldn't ever waste an opportunity to make a great story out of him.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is hands down one of the best Spider-Man movies since the success of the first two movies in the Sam Rami trilogy. Actor, Tom Holland, portrays the character almost perfectly unlike any of the other past adaptations and past actors who took upon the role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Holland was able to perfect both sides of the character by having Peter Parker being the nerdy, shy, yet awkward teenage scientist like he should be and differentiate that with his alter ego, with his fast-talking humor and quipping to annoy his enemies. Past actors of Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, sadly could not get this right. Don't get me wrong, Tobey's portrayal as Peter Parker was incredible, but he could not get the personality down of the man who's supposed to be constantly babbling and annoying his foes while fighting. It felt like he was only capable to stay as the nerdy science guy under the mask the whole time. Garfield, on the other hand, is the polar opposite, his performance as the wise-cracking Wall-Crawler was great. But when he takes off the mask it's almost like he's not Peter Parker. He didn't show off many parts of his genius side, he didn't act at all that shy towards people and not at all nerdy or uncool compared to the popular crowd. He came off as a normal guy in Highschool, not to mention he would occasionally skateboard like he's almost like Tony Hawk or something. That did not really scream "nerdy" to me. This is why I believe Marvel made the right call to cast Tom Holland, he is the Spider-Man that we disserved. Now, on to the main antagonist himself, The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. Unlike past villains we've seen before in past movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this villain isn't all that evil, he's pretty relatable. His only intentions start when he was cleaning up the aftermath of the battle in New York City from the events of the Avengers. Just then, the Department of Damage Control takes over his work site leaving him out of the job all because of the one who sent the Damage Control people in the first place, Tony Stark. All he ever wanted was to take this job to provide care for his family. He tries not to overextend himself and to stay from the Avengers radar for the past few years and smuggles alien tech from the Atari in order to sell it for money. The Vulture could be considered one of my favorite villains in the MCU considering his actions aren't all that bad. Although, that does not take away the fact that he can come over intimidating and scary at times. For example, once Peter discovers his Homecoming date's father is actually the Vulture when he opened the front door the whole theater, including me, had gasped in shock then it got real silent. himself the setting gets very intense. Peter is in a tough spot in this situation and feeling uneasy that he's with both the person he really likes and the one who he hates which once also wants to kill Peter. The car ride to the dace was very hard to watch because the Vulture was slowly learning Peter's identity once his daughter Liz kept questioning Peter for his absences and that Spider-Man happens to show up everytime he disappears. The tone in Vulture's voice when he started speaking to Peter had gotten deeper making the tension build, I was riding my teeth the whole way through. This movie was quite fun and enjoyable. Had some very funny moments here and there, which had me laughing quite a lot, and then there's the giant tension builders and the dramatic yet immersive fights. Moments like when Spider-Man is badly hurt and on the break of death got me off the edge of my seat, it made me feel and connect with the character more since he's also quite relatable to me from the fact that I'm also a teenager just like him going through high school. I look forward to seeing how great they can go with this for their sequel, hope it's able to top this first phenomenal movie.… Expand

Creativity – (20/20) Love the new suit. It’s great to see Spidey get some new abilities, as the Scarlet Witch has.

We had to wait years to finally get a genuinely good Spider-Man movie. This is one of the most fun movies I saw in 2017 and one of the best and must fun and entertaining MCU movies ever. This is one of the most fun movies I saw in 2017 and one of the best and must fun and entertaining MCU movies ever. This movie is really funny, with solid acting and good writing, this is basically a comedy and a really good one. Tom Holland is a perfect fit for Peter Parker and Spider-Man and Michael Keaton as The Vulture is great, his acting was solid, not Oscar-worthy obviously, but the reason he was really good is because his character was well written and developed, the same with Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Now the only problem I have with this movie is that is TOO funny. Yes, I praised it for being funny and entertaining, but it's too funny to the point that there's nothing emotional or dramatic, or there's no tension, there are scenes that are supposed to be serious but then they end it with a dumb joke. Some drama might give this movie a balance that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies (specially the second one) actually had. I don't ask for like tragedy as that's not a synonym for drama, but maybe some conflict, some stakes, maybe make The Vulture a menacing serious villain, but nope, he also cracks jokes ocasionally as all the characters.

Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot, this is a good movie overall and I would definetly watch it again and again to have a pretty good time… Expand

Apesar de não ser um dos meus filmes do spidey favoritos, eu gosto de como as coisas foram feitas aqui. O fato de seguir bastante as HQ's é um dos principais motivos. Quero dizer... finalmente temos um cabeça de teia jovem, e além disso, a fase onde o mesmo não foi picado foi cortada, o que é um ponto muito positivo. A escolha do protagonista não poderia ser melhor, encachando muito bem nessa "nova" caracterização do personagem.

O fato de ter os vingadores a "disposição" talvez fosse uma risca ao senso de perigo da trama, mas o roteiro consegue alternar isso com algumas situações especificas - mesmo que elas não façam tanto sentido, não me incomodam. O vilão não teve um bom espaço de tela, mas o pouco que vimos dele já é o suficiente para entender suas motivações, que são boas. Os personagens são ótimos, o que alivia o peso do Tom Holland. O senso de humor funcionou muito bem comigo, sem parecer forçado, o que é um risco em determinadas situações dependendo da sua suspensão da descrença.

Os efeitos especiais estão ótimos, assim como a ost e a direção de arte.
Apesar de ter tido uma experiencia medíocre da primeira vez que assisti, fico feliz em ter aproveitado o longa dessa vez.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't like this film as much as previous Spiderman films. I think I felt it was too Marvel universe oriented. I don't follow the whole superhero universe side of things but this film felt more trivial and perhaps full of injokes and things which I didnt/couldn't entirely appreciate. I definitely remember enjoying the previous 'The Amazing Spiderman' films with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire but this felt different.

There are undoubtedly some slick action scenes with good uses of CGI but it just didn't especially appeal to me, its an ok watch with a good cast (Robert Downey Jr and Michael Keaton to name a couple) but I can't say it kept me gripped to the screen. I suppose its because im not interested enough to follow the whole universe of various different superhero characters, so the info. about the stages different ones are at doesn't especially interest me or mean much but I imagine that big fans of Spiderman and those keen on Marvel superhero films will likely enjoy it.… Expand

A lot of fun!

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is entertaining, as I had expected in truth. The plot is possibly not as great as it could've been, but it is still one that is enjoyable to see. The effects are excellent, as is the humour. TomA lot of fun!

Tom Holland is the star of this though. He kills it as the titular character, he adds a tremendous amount to the film. Michael Keaton plays his role well enough, while it's cool to see 'Iron Man' duo Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau involved.

Jacob Batalon is good, while it's noteworthy to have Zendaya and Donald Glover appear; even if they are underused/unimportant, at least for now for the former, I assume. I found the whole cast enjoyable, to be fair.

This narrowly misses the next rating up from me, but I still had a very pleasant time watching - and await the follow-up with much eagerness!… Expand

Sure I agree with some people that Disney's definition of Spiderman doesn't live up to Sam Raimi's trilogy and the comics. I hadn't watched any MCU movies until the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Everyone was talking about it and I had just joined college. So I decided to bingewatch all the MCU movies so that I could catch up before AvengersL EndgameI hadn't watched any MCU movies until the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Everyone was talking about it and I had just joined college. So I decided to bingewatch all the MCU movies so that I could catch up before AvengersL Endgame releases. As I was watching all the movies I was getting really impatient to watch Spider-Man: Homecoming. The reason is pretty obvious: It's Spider-Man, literally the only superhero I actually cared about before watching MCU. Sure Iron Man came a close second, but I wouldnt' know anything about Iron Man if not for MCU. Spider-Man, however, I was a fan of him since childhood. I had watched the Sam Raimi trilogy, I had played that 2000 game, I had his toys and I had seen his cartoons. So Spider-Man is the only MCU hero who is so close to my heart. And here he has been given a very faithful adaptation.

The first thing that makes this movie so interesting for me is how Spider-Man's suit is in the movie. Overall this is the third adaptation of the popular superhero (not counting any bootleg movies). Toby Maguire's Spider-Man has all his superpowers within himself. He shot webs from his veins (I guess?), was immensely strong, could climb walls and had the spidey sense. Then came the Andrew Garfield one. He used a web shooting device for shooting webs, like how it actually happens in the comics (other than the comic book fans no one knew this is actually how Spider-Man shot webs), but other than that everything else came from within him.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man, however, neither shot webs from his hands nor could climb walls. He required his suit for the purpose. His suit also did the work of the spidey sense, which made him have to do almost nothing for a fight. This is not just a good way of showing how much he is dependant on the suit (something which is talked about later), but also gives his powers a lot more scope. His web shooters have multiple mods, he has an instant kill mode, GPS, AI that gave him all the information he needed and overall made him pretty much like Tony Stark but with a Spider-Man suit instead of an Iron Man suit.

The second thing which made this movie so interesting for me is that it focused on what makes Spider-Man so interesting instead of focusing on the same storyline as the two previous interpretations. We don't have to listen to Uncle Ben's story once again, we don't have to listen to Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy's relations with him, we don't have to know how he learnt of his responsibilities. Rather we jumped right into the good part - how a child is trying to handle his responsibility as an amateur teenage superhero and balancing his school life at the same time. Who can possibly forget that Stan Lee cameo?

And finally the third reason why I like this movie so much is because of what is at the stakes. Normally if anyone like me skims through all the MCU movies we'd notice that the movies don't have stakes on a personal level but rather on a global level. Captain America isn't fighting Red Skull because he himself is in danger but rather for his country. Thor fights for his kingdom. Iron Man fights for what he thinks is right. And on the other hand there are those fights which take place due to personal reasons, like Iron Man 3 or Captain America: Civil War. Here, however, both personal and global levels are on threat. Spider-Man has to stop the Vulture so that his city can be safe BUT he can't attack him because he's Mary Jane's father. His morals cause trouble because of which Tony takes back his suit, but later returns it after seeing the good in Peter. These are some small moments that end up humanising a superhero and makes us care about his personal life.

I see nowadays it has become something of a trend to bash Tom Holland's Spider-Man, which is mostly because people tend to compare him to Toby Maguire or Andrew Garfield. Among all the reviews sorting by Review Date are mostly critical of this movie. All I'd say to these people is dude, read the comics first. Tom Holland is the most comic accurate depiction of Spider-Man. Spider-Man is an immature kid who is trying to balance his life as a schoolkid and a superhero. He isn't as smart as us and gets those edgy mood swings, so we definitely can't expect him to be another Tony Stark. I really liked this movie, so much that I can watch it over and over again.… Expand

Michael Keaton gives a very human performance as the film’s antagonist, The Vulture, and is a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the MCU’s villains, with his human motives and the relatively low stakes of his plans.
-The pretty low stakes in this movie make it a breath of fresh air compared to other entries. It’s nice to sit back and watch a smaller, more human film compared to the mega-blockbuster, “end of the world” stakes so many superhero films stick with.
-The high-school scenes are pretty investing. Something I was worried about going in is that they would completely botch the human, high-school scenes, but they don’t. They truly stick the landing.
-The film’s tone is consistent, and never leans too far in one direction. There are dark moments, and there are laughs, but they never feel out of place in the context of their scenes.
-The film is very well paced. In my opinion, the movie never dragged, and was pretty fast-paced throughout.

CONS:
-The action leaves a lot to be desired. Having smaller stakes doesn’t mean your action sequences have to be less inspiring and creative. I feel there were several directions they could’ve gone to make the action more livid and exciting while maintaining that lighter tone and the smaller stakes, but the action felt mostly generic, and honestly, a bit boring.
-The side-characters aren’t very entertaining. Characters like Ned can get annoying after a while, and characters like Michelle (nicknamed MJ towards the end of the film) aren’t given anything to do, and are just kinda...there. The only consistently enjoyable side-character in this movie (Aunt May, played PERFECTLY by Marisa Tomei) is barely in it.
-Spider-Man’s over-reliance on tech throughout the first three-quarters of the film is a very touchy subject for me. I am a HUGE Spider-Man fan, but I think by giving him the upgraded Stark Suit, and giving him all of that tech, really takes away from what makes Spidey who he is. Peter is smart enough and powerful enough to solve his own problems and make his own tech, WITHOUT the help of someone else, much less a billionaire like Tony Stark. The only time the movie truly feels like a proper Spider-Man movie is during the final quarter, in which Peter deals with the consequences of his reckless (but well-meaning) actions, gets his upgraded suit taken, and has to take down The Vulture on his own, without his tech, in his own crappy, handmade suit. THAT is Spider-Man! However, this is more of a personal nitpick of mine, being a huge fan and all. I feel like most people probably won’t be too bothered by it. Maybe just the hardcore Spidey fans.

OVERALL:
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is a fun movie. It has it’s flaws, and it’s definitely not the best movie the Spidey franchise has to offer, or the MCU, but it should entertain you and I feel most people will probably enjoy it for the most part.… Expand

That stereotype has already been done to the death. In this movie he's an annoying nerd who sometimes bullies Peter. He's also rich and a coward. I liked this change. This movie is also more grounded compared to others in the MCU. The scale is much smaller. Spider-Man: Homecoming isn't about saving the world or the galaxy, it's just a story about Spider-Man who tries to stop a small-time weapons dealer. Sometimes, less is more. Though I have some mixed feelings on Spider-Man being so tied to Iron Man and having a high-tech suit. Not really sure how I feel about that...… Expand

Although not his original origin story i think marvel did very well with this movie the special effects were amazing as well as the storyline of his new origin story definitely one of my favourite Spider-Man movies to date!
