Everything was cranked up a notch from “Into the Spider-Verse.” The writing was compelling and hilarious, the animation was breathtaking (I can’t believe how much more of a spectacle this movie is compared to the first). Top all of that with an ending that manages to be both amazing and infuriating at the same time and you have a recipe for a sequel that completely surpasses its predecessor. This movie trades in a lot of the originals substance to create a young man's coming of age story, which means it's full of drama. The style and story telling (along with some good laughs) carry it through to create an excellent experience. The real issue with this movie other than being extra sappy, is honestly how uncontained the story seems. It's a long movie that doesn't really end, this is either due to the fact that they knew there was always going to be another movie or because they were trying to keep the run time down. This causes the movie to need another film to finish the tale, which the first one never needed. Expand

Expand

It was indeed a fantastic cinematic experience bringing the right amount of humour, the beautiful art style and visuals that we loved in the first one, an incredible soundtrack which suits every frame of the movie & great and well-choreographed action sequences.

The entire cast did a phenomenal job, bringing us a sequel which was just as good, if not better, than the first one. While at the same time, setting up the stage for what’s more to come!

The best part of the whole movie was the art style, which was unique and a breath of fresh air. Kudos to the whole animation team, as it really felt like they gave their all for each and every scene.

Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse Exactly how a sequel should be — reminiscent of the former movie whilst beautifully building upon it.

It's a visual treat, bursting with brilliant and daring animations. Every shot is so stunning that they elicit a 'blink and you miss it' feel.

The plot is jumpy, dark and revelatory. Elements from the first movie are deliciously and carefully unfurled. Fanservice and Easter eggs are also abundant. It is also delightful to see how character development is handled. Although the screen time is long, it doesn't become boring or tiring. (Spoiler alert— It ends on a cliffhanger that's so profound and shocking, possibly one of the best I've ever seen, especially as the movie's title doesn't hint at being a 'part one'.)

The multiverse both makes sense and functions in this universe, every character is likeable and well developed, Spot is such a great character and especially how he starts as a nobody and becomes "The Villain" The only con is the ending, I understand that it would be too long but we waited half a decade for this film... How long until the next? I will say the art stye has charm and is unique which is something nice to see these days... Overall an excellent film that achieves everything it sets out to accomplish only having a cliffhangar ending being a con. Good work Sony Expand

It's barbarically inventive and delightfully entertaining. But as they say, you can never have too much of a good thing. The style is distracting, the plot succumbs to abrupt tonal shifts, the structure is brutalised by never-ending humour, and the creativity is clueless about when it has crossed the line into the silly-verse. Among the random vignettes, it's difficult to not imagine a cleaner, more edited movie. Nevertheless, this admirably isn't even close to being a catastrophe. This sequel is actually quite well done, very entertaining, and frequently moving. building indefinitely through exposition and naturally occurring narrative turns. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spider-Verse 2 a very well done continuation, the strong point is the animations, the sound quality and the soundtrack which is incredible, Miles Morales faces family problems in the film like any 15 year old teenager does, but in Miles Morales the reasons of these problems are different from other teenagers but it demonstrates a feeling that we all feel when we are/were in that phase and that is charming. The story of the film is very solid, I liked the story but for some it may seem like a pure cliche. The movie didn't have an ending, it simply ended with a "to be continued", this ending serves for a sequel to the movie that comes next year, and even though it didn't have an ending I liked it haha.
I recommend it to everyone, a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No maior Clímax do filme, Ele acaba... Por isso minha nota é 9. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

By "correctly," I mean giving the genuine creators a bit of freedom and time, rather than imposing excessive restrictions and adhering strictly to formulas, like Marvel often does.

It's refreshing to witness a tightly-woven script with genuine character development and meaningful consequences. The characters' histories hold significance, and the dilemmas they face are profound. Additionally, it's truly astonishing to observe how the movie conveys the characters' emotions through background colors.

Furthermore, the action scenes are both chaotic and impressive, the settings are rich in detail, the dialogue is engaging, and the fact that this movie doesn't solely rely on the typical Hero vs. Villain conflict is truly satisfying.

Title: "Across the Spider-Verse: A Thrilling Sequel Packed with Stunning Animation and Unpredictable Twists"

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

Note: This review is based on a second viewing of the film.

"After watching 'Across the Spider-Verse' for the second time, I couldn't help but appreciate the film even more. With the initial viewing leaving me in awe, I immediately booked another ticket to delve deeper into its intricacies. Now, armed with a newfound understanding, I am ready to share my thoughts on this remarkable sequel."

"Across the Spider-Verse" returns with an enchanting second installment that will leave audiences captivated and eagerly anticipating the next chapter. This film is a testament to the creative brilliance of its team, as it delivers a balanced blend of introspective storytelling, breathtaking animation, and surprising plot twists.

Upon revisiting the movie, it becomes evident that the deliberate, slower pace of the first half provides a deeper understanding of Spider Gwen's journey, both before and after the events of the original film. It also offers a glimpse into Miles' current endeavors while introducing us to The Spot, the formidable "villain of the week." However, once the stage is set and the second half unfolds, the film accelerates into hyperdrive, bombarding the audience with a whirlwind of revelations and new elements.

The storytelling in "Across the Spider-Verse" is a masterclass in keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. It expertly teases us with clues about what's to come, only to subvert our expectations entirely. The desire for more is amplified, leaving us craving the third film and eagerly speculating about its mysteries. This sequel succeeds in leaving an indelible mark on the audience's imagination.

The animation in this movie is a spectacle to behold. With meticulous attention to detail and a seamless blend of various art styles, the visual experience surpasses that of its predecessor. The transitions between different backgrounds and the inclusion of comic sound effects further enhance the dynamic nature of the scenes. Every frame is a work of art, a testament to the care and passion poured into the animation process.

The voice acting in "Across the Spider-Verse" is exemplary, with Shameik Moore reprising his role as Miles Morales and Luna Lauren Vélez shining as Rio Morales. Their performances inject authenticity and emotion into the characters, grounding them in relatable struggles and triumphs. The ensemble cast delivers a captivating performance, further enhancing the film's impact.

The core of the story lies in exploring the inner turmoil of each character and the weight of the choices they must make in the name of the greater good. Miles, in particular, grapples with the dual identity of a gifted student and a superhero. These thematic elements add depth to the narrative, reminding us that even heroes face internal conflicts.

In conclusion, "Across the Spider-Verse" is a thrilling sequel that builds upon its predecessor's success. It exhibits outstanding animation, compelling storytelling, and memorable voice acting. While the film's pacing might feel uneven at times, the overall experience is a triumph. It sets the stage perfectly for the highly anticipated third installment, leaving audiences eagerly awaiting its arrival. With a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, this film is a must-watch for fans of the Spider-Verse and lovers of visually stunning and emotionally resonant cinema.

I was excited because I considered Into the Spider-Verse not only one of my favourite animated movies but one of my favourite movies, period. So I was concerned over whether the sequel would carry its' heavy legacy or succumb to "sequelitis". Well I didn't like this film.

I LOVED THIS FILM! The animation is once again stellar, challenging what animation is capable of. It makes me realise more superhero films need to be animated to not only better capture the spirit of the comic it is adapted from but also show more than what can be done in live-action. The characters are still as enjoyable as ever with even more colourful creative characters added to the line-up, with a personal highlight, being Pavit Prabhakar, voiced by Deadpool's delightful Karan Soni. Not once did I ever feel disengaged with so much thrilling action, suspensing drama and beautiful visuals on the screen. The Spot is an incredible villain with a large range transforming over the film from a hilarious goofball to a complete psychopath with nightmarish visuals. Every True Believer will have their jaw dropped for the whole film looking at all the different easter eggs scattered around this masterpiece. If I only had one complaint, is that the visuals, while stunning to look at, can get jarring at times to the point where it is hard to keep track of the action on screen, gorgeous as it may be. I can honestly say this is a must-see not just for superhero fans, not just for Spider-Man fans, not just for animation fans, but for anyone just looking for a fun film at the cinema. Nuff Said!

Just as the lights dimmed, I was told this was a two-part film and I groaned. Why drag it out? But then the film starts and even at over 2 hours, I was itching for more.

Gwen opens the film and its action-packed and brings up straight back into the ground-breaking animation style from the first film, and after a confrontation with her cop dad, we learn how she joins the other across the Spider-Verse gang.

We get an intimate glimpse of the Morales family dynamic and the strains Mile’s superhero’ing causes. Their interactions are realistic and awkward, the over the top metered with genuine moments.

The film explains the multiverse in probably the most coherent way in recent history, with the idea of disruption of “canon events” lead to the destruction of the universe in which that disruption occurred. Lots going on! There are a couple of twists that are carefully set up throughout the film so when they’re revealed, it pays off. The cinema I was in literally gasped in unison at them.

The main villain comes from humble beginnings to ultimate top-tier bad guy, and we understand why this happens. It’s quite uncomfortable to see how, due to no fault of his own, the villain is made fun of, not taken seriously and dehumanised until he is driven to prove his worth in the most maniacal way possible.

I understand this is a movie with multiple Spider-People, but at times the film feels bloated and repetitive, and some bits could have definitely been removed. The main antagonist Spider-Man – leader of the group – is well-crafted, imposing and eventually menacing, and having our Peter Parker make an appearance is welcomed. Across the Spider-Verse is quite as impactful as the first film, but I don’t think that was a realistic expectation to have. The visual style is out of control and coherent at the same time but you may find yourself having to close your eyes for a moment to reset your optic nerves.

The plot twist cliff-hanger? Dang.

One of the best sequels created in the past few years. The plot is ever-compelling, and I can't wait for the third installment in the trilogy. I didn't like it quite as much as the original, but the margin is very small and I still loved this. 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a good movie but not as exceptional story wise as I hoped. It's a well executed and logical follow up that plays it somewhat expected (despite its visual audaciousness). Yes they throw a few curveballs at you, but...perhaps we've finally seen too many multiverse movies. If we're judging multiverse films as their own genre at this point, I found this plot run of the mill. One of the biggest single flaws in this film is its ending. They decide to pull back in the last stretch to bring it in for a soft landing with "To be continued...”. Well, has that worked for the Matrix or Back to the Future? Does anyone believe part 3 is the best of those franchises? (or part 2 for that matter?). Maybe Spider-verse will buck the trend, but it left a sour taste in my mouth knowing that - forever - this 140min film is not a standalone adventure. Stories need to have an ending. I understand why writers would want to take this route as it’s easier than having to reinvent the wheel twice, but for audiences we are left with a weakened second entry that feels incomplete. TV shows can get away with cliffhangers because the stories are already shorter to begin with, and they are meant to propel the next installment while maintaining viewer interest. For major studio films, I think it's a poison kiss of creative bankruptcy. It makes the second 2 movies in a trilogy feel more like a homework assignment rushed to turn it in. "Okay we wrote the damn trilogy." 'You mean...you wrote one long story and cut it in two?!'. It’s the cinematic equivalent of double spacing an essay. You know what I like about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? It's reminiscent of the earlier films, but it's its own movie. You can be in a 'last crusade mood' or a 'temple of doom mood.'

My other big criticism of this movie is its pacing. The emotional beats are far too many and way too stretched out. I think uncle Ben dying in Spider-Man 1 took 1/10 the screen time of some of this and Across the Spider Verse is not 10 times better for the effort. It lends an air of self seriousness to an otherwise bouncy plot and weighs things down disproportionately to adding emotional heft. I dutifully watched but was unmoved by most of the emotional scenes. Which makes me suspect they were dutifully written more than deeply inspired.

Though the film is entertaining to watch for the most part my problems with it are more than simple nitpicks. I am curious to see how it holds up on second viewing, but I’m not compelled to go back soon. The first one I thought was a masterpiece when I first saw it, but has become more tedious on re-viewings and I can’t quite figure out why (my theory is that quippy dialogue does not age well). I suspect this movie may have similar issues but I sincerely hope I am wrong and that the opposite happens where I appreciate it more as time goes on… especially once part three is released and the ending of this one is more of a detail than a disappointment.

She meets up with Miles Morales on one mission, who followed her back to the Spider Society and is informed that he has to let controversial 'Canon Events' happens else the Multiverse will collapse. The film has a interesting story line and good animation, but some parts of the animation may be too fast for the eyes and some are too long. > Related media: I have watched all Marvel Cinematic Universe films with Spider-man featured and also the film preceding the current film. I have not read the comics or watched the TV shows.
> Positives: > 1. The story remains interesting and fresh, as with the first film.
> Negatives:
> 1. The fast parts of some animations can be too much for some people, including myself. I had felt the same issue with the preceding film.
> 2. I think there are 3 major fights in the film and all of them felt too long and repetitive. Coupled with them being fast animations, it was again, too much to take.
> How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Good > Teens: Excellent > Young adults: Excellent
> Medium-age adults: Excellent > Older adults: Good. > My rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Definitely watch it in the cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: animation, action, hobie, miguel was a menace in every scene he was in and he at least for me was sympathetic, not a single minute was boring. Miles mom has way more prescence in this one and I liked her.
Gwen, the first 20 odd minutes are dedicated to her world. She is basically a secondary main character. she maybe has more screen time than miles.
Cons: music is too loud to understand diologue in some parts. maybe that was just the dolby atmos.
Two of the spider people endanger their children for empowerment/giggles. This just cannot be supported and needs to be called out. It's hard to be invested even in animation when I personally am seeing these things. Im not saying there needs to be consequences, but it's a major turn off.
The whole canon thing is left to be answered in the sequel. Miles gets blamed for not letting a person die because he was out of universe, yet the movie just ignores that said person was gonna die because of an action of another out of universe character, and that he wasn't the only spider person in that universe at the time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really great overall, though I preferred the first one. The animation was just as good as the original, as was the voice cast, script, direction and music. I loved the Spot, he was a much more effective villain than Kingpin and probably my favourite character in the film overall, managing to strike a great balance between being humorous and being threatening. I also really liked Miguel, Spider-Man India and Peter B Parker. Lots of great easter eggs and references as well.

As for weaknesses, I thought the sound mixing made dialogue quite hard to hear, and the animation, while beautiful, was a bit too frenetic to follow during fight scenes, though neither of these were a deal breaker. My biggest issue with the film is its plot, which is a substantial downgrade compared to the first. Putting aside that most of it is just set-up and exposition for the next film, resulting in pacing issues and flabbiness compared to the much tighter plot of the first film, how the film handles the "canon" concept is a complete misunderstanding of Spider-Man as a character. It was especially egregious to see Peter essentially refer to Uncle Ben as a necessary sacrifice. There is just no way Peter, or any other Spider-Man, would just stand aside and let people die. They would try and save everyone, and even if they failed, they would try again, and again, until they succeeded. Miles was the only one to act in character on that point, which is pretty eye-rolling. If your plot requires you to character assassinate most of your main cast in order for it to work, it needs a re-think, and if the whole canon aspect turns out to be nonsense in the third film (as I suspect it will), then all but one of the Spider-Men in the multiverse have been made accessories to murder. Abysmal.

Still, as I said, overall, the ride was very enjoyable, despite the plot issues. I'm looking forward to the final instalment, hopefully it will address some of the problems here.

I think there's no need to make it more powerful than the other versions of Spider-Man; it already has enough powers. Also, I want to highlight the animations (10/10) and the great voice performances. For Spider-Man fans, like me , this is a fantastic movie.

I really like the inclusion of Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya). He is serious, yet funny with his British accent, which is also Daniel Kaluuya’s native language.

The story continues the journey of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), who has been Spider-Man for a year and four months. As he navigates the multiverse, Miles must find his place while facing his past and confronting new challenges.

This film delivers an exciting multiverse adventure, packed with surprising Easter eggs for Spider-Man fans to enjoy. The storyline fits perfectly within the realm of animated superhero movies, providing a solid foundation for the narrative of superheroes. The film has a lot of twists and turns, which keeps the story engaging throughout. The camera work is incredible and seamless, especially how they formatted the graphics and shape patterns, with no noticeable issues. Shameik Moore delivers an outstanding performance as Miles Morales, embodying the essence of both Spider-Man and Miles, who is just a kid that has superpowers. Hailee Steinfeld portrays an ideal daughter and friend who cannot understand why there is chemistry between her and Spider-Man, which showcases her exceptional acting abilities. Jason Schwartzman, as The Spot, brings an intriguing twist and laughter with a sense of darkness to the character, challenging our expectations. The movie concludes with exceptional music and an ending that left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the next installment.

The film’s message: "You can't save everyone you want," reminds viewers of the limitations that come with being a hero and how you shouldn’t forget to be yourself. It's important to note that there is a small amount of profanity in this film, so parents should take that into consideration. I give Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse 4 out of 5 stars and I recommend it for 12 to 18, plus adults. It swings into theaters June 2, 2023. By Rayce S., KIDS FIRST!

I never want to knock this movie. I found it extremely interesting and spectacular, but it never reaches the level of the first part.
It has a lot of strengths, but its flaws made me fall for it. For example, Miles is still the undisputed star of the movie. And the audience can easily identify with him and understand him. That's why his relationship with Gwen is so natural. .
The new characters are masterpieces in the meaning of the word. I could never understand Miguel O'Hara in the comics, but here he had a purpose and found meaning for me.
The movie is full of hints and twists that are great in their own way and help the animation to be wide.
The visual style is better than the last time, as well as the costumes. But I don't know why I personally think the last time is better. I don't have a particular problem and I won't lower the score, but for example, Miles' outfit was better last time.
I will quickly go to the flaws: firstly, the duration of the film does not suit the subject and it is too long, and it could have been less. as well as other worlds)
Third, all these versions of Spider-Man were chosen for a reason to be the most popular hero in their own world. So, why are they taking orders from Miguel O'Hara? Is his blood more colorful than the others or does he have more history?!
Fourth, Peter B. Parker (whom I fell in love with last time) was dragged into the mud. In this movie, he knows that Miles' father is going to die, but he didn't bother to go and visit him and find a way to save him. Peter Parker, whom I liked since I was a child, found a way to save everyone between saving a world and a person, even if he himself was killed.
Overall, the animation is very good, but the flaws I mentioned can never be overcome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The highly-anticipated animated movie Spider-Man! Ah!

The plot does follow the one of the first opus and isn't afraid to introduce new characters (or some forgotten ones). I found that the movie takes a bit too much time to launch and becoming interesting though. It wasn't necessary to explain who Spider-Man and what his motto is. We are quickly introduced to Spider-Man's nemesis: The Spot, and his total lack of style and charisma. Although his character benefits from a certain evolution throughout the film, it is in the middle of the plot that he becomes truly dangerous (and oddly enough, not after that). The first fight with him is a huge mess and seems destined to amaze and make the children laugh. Nothing more than that. A main flaw to me is Miles Morales' powers that are so overwhelming without any explanation. In addition to that, the classic teenage crisis wasn't mandatory to me since it gives the movie a taste of lack of creativity. Has it nothing else to tell? Well obviously yes. And that leads me to another potential flaw: the movie opens way too much doors and intrigues. How are they going to close them all well? I guess we'll see...

The CGI is incredible all along and never fails to offer us magic scenes. Some action ones however remains mind-numbing and in-your-face to me. Colours and wonderful, as well as the lighting and charcters' design. Special thanks for the punk Spider-Man on that point. The many easter-eggs are fun to look at and don't pollute thepace of the feature. The very end especially is a enormous flaw, but I'll let the future prove me wrong if they manage to end it carefully.

The soundtrack, produced by the rising star Metro Boomin is interesting but sadly fails to equal the one of the previous feature 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' (with its iconic 'Sunflower' from Post Malone and hip-hop/latino R&B fusion). Fortunately it doesn't prevent it to compliment the movie with strong sequences paced by 'Am I Dreaming', 'All The Way Live' or 'Self Love'. Thanks Metro Boomin for that!

The film is very good and brings all the qualities of the first, almost all, in fact what is missing is the impact of the first that would be impossible to replicate.

Pros: great visuals
Cons: at times that movie is slow, and at other times there's too much going on.

I liked into the spider verse more

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

And this is good, but if the first film was a self-contained story, then the second film turned out to be a little cut off. The animation is still amazing, and it is clear that the authors have advanced even further in technology, but nevertheless, in some places the production came out either too long or, on the contrary, too fast, because of which you do not have time to concentrate and feel empathy for the characters. It's still pretty early to tell though as this movie can't be enjoyed without a sequel that hasn't been released yet, so for now I'm giving it a 7 as I enjoyed this movie and may change my mind depending on how the sequel turns out. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty good half movie

It was a pretty good movie, and I liked the increase in cameos. They really seemed like they were given more freedom with this movie as opposed to the last one. The only issue is that despite being a full 2 1/2 hours, it still doesn’t have an ending. Additionally, in an infinite multiverse, wouldn’t there be multiple near identical universes, meaning multiple colliders and other situations exactly like mile’s. The fact that there are so many blue and red spidermen, but only one spider Gwen is just weird. Also I am slightly disappointed that John Mulaney didn’t reappear as spider ham (aside from a short voice clip from the last movie.) although he was in rehab at the time, so it’s no big deal. I liked the movie, but it just abruptly ended, when it really shouldn’t have. There are also numerous other plot holes that I don’t even feel like mentioning, one example being that Gwen’s photo with miles didn’t glitch out of existence. This movie was only made because Sony needs to make a spider man movie every 4 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One part sequel baiting, 1 part woke Hollywood (black pregnant spider woman and emasculated OG spiderman with baby in tow anyone?) and 1 part awesome sound and visuals. I was torn by the quality of what I watched and what its intended message was. I was often times entertained but it was a messy and long journey! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, I liked this movie. Giving it a 6 only because of the cop out ending. The aesthetics and animations were absolutely stunning. They really took it to the next level in that regard. Solid character development throughout. Soundtrack was solid again. The only two complaints I have are as follows: 1) Plot - The plot did not have as much consistency as I would have liked. They claim that changing stories or preventing certain things from happening could destroy an entire universe due to it "messing up the cannon" of the world. Yet they go around from universe to universe with no issue messing up all kinds of things and cannon. So you can't let one guy die, but can have someone not named Peter Parker be Spiderman and that's totally okay? It made no sense to me. 2) The to be continued ending... That was a serious gut punch to me. I paid for a full movie from start to finish. This reeked of a cash grab to me. Easily could've wrapped up this entire plot with an extra 20 minutes of runtime or so. Now I guess I have to wait another 5 years to see how this finishes? I will not remember everything by then, and I hate rewarding movies that do this with my money so I may not actually go see the follow up. If you're okay with cliff hanger endings I recommend this movie. It's better than 95% of new content out there. I just wish the plot was a bit better. Expand

I think, the sequel is a victim of the success (critical, commercial and artistic) of the first installment. The producers took that success as licence for what turned out to be the content of the sequel. Four things made this experience unsatisfactory for me. The Opening scene with Gwen was boring and an ill-advised start to the movie; there were numerous scenes that could have been handled in much shorter time periods; there were too many spidermen and timelines (that there are many does not mean so many have to be crammed into one movie). The fourth, was the culmination of the first two, which took up unnecessary time, the story was not concluded in this movie, there is to be a second part. Not good. I will not take away from the movie, the fact that the things that made the first installment an outstanding movie are still there. There are two areas in the movie, where things were moved up a notch from the first; In a scene Miles and Gwen have a full fledged conversation while web-slinging, and then continue the conversation, while stationary but hanging (actually sitting) upside down from a the top of a skyscrapper. My opinion of this movie is mixed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good movie but vastly inferior to the first.

Unfortunately if you liked Spider pig or the other spidermans from the last movie, you won’t be getting them here despite the movie introducing a plethora of characters who don’t live up to the last movie’s spiderman noire/pigs

The movie still maintains that signature style from the first movie although sometimes the colors and flashing lights are a bit chaotic and the movie too heavily focuses on needless action/movement scenes. The tone of the styles also varies widely, some making my eyes hurt. Someone who has epilepsy should 100% not watch this movie. At times I felt like a horde of unicorns were vomiting in my face. Some action scenes go on for way too long with awkward comedic dialogue in between like this first time where they chase the villain who can make holes. It just dragged on and on and just had so many one line quips from this hole guy that just fell flat. I kept waiting for some sort of conclusion or wrap-up but nope, this like everything else in this movie is not concluded. Don’t get me wrong, the action scenes are great but it comes at the expense of the characters. Characters like ‘afro lady’ spiderman and punk spiderman did not connect like spiderpig, noire, etc. Spiderpunk would make cringy lines for modern 2023 audiences along the lines of ‘capitalism bad!’ And afro lady seemed to have only existed so the movie could fill their diversity quota since she had 0 personality and didnt act, dress, or look like anything attempting to be a ‘spider something’. They werent terrible but compared to the contrasting personalities of spider pig and spider noire, these characters just felt uninspired.

The end action scene of the film, which can hardly be considered a ‘climax’ unfortunately doesnt make too much sense as it says that it is canon that miles father must die, however the film completely ignores that spiderman’s uncle already died. Spiderman canonically must have some loved one die and they establish this in the first movie too, it does not need to be a captain, so it was awkward and contradicted itself when they tried to shoehorn in that ‘oh yeah miles, your dad will die because he is a captain even though your uncle already died’. What was the point of showing spider gwen and every other spiderman’s dead loved one if you are going to introduce a new concept that two loved ones must die? Why didnt spider gwen care if her captain dad died? Why is it ok that gwen just spontaneously leave her timeline and that has no timeline consequences? Why are all of mile’s spider friends suddenly uncaring a-holes who would try to stop their friend from saving his own dad? I like that peter parker has a baby now but he’s really swinging his toddler around as he does extremely dangerous stuff when this movie establishes over and over the theme of parents protecting their kids. Another awkward addition to this movie for a few attempts to make the audience go ‘awww haha the baby does spiderman stuff too’

Worst of all, the movie opens up three huge plot points and doesnt care to conclude anything! Ok ok we get another movie but at least attempt to finish something. The cliffhanger ending felt like it belonged in a TV show, not a movie that I’m watching in theaters. The movie doesnt even have anything remotely close to a climax. It just ends. When ‘to be continued’ flashed on the screen, i could hear ‘what!?’ And ‘really…’ from people in the theaters. There are good and bad ways to do cliffhangers. The empire strikes back had a cliffhanger but it still had a climax, and still concluded itself in someway to finish this chapter of star wars. Spiderman did not do this and it was just unsatisfactory. They tease a ‘final battle’ w spider pig, noire, etc and it was such a cop out and made me wonder why all of them only decide to show us at the very end. Was every character from the first movie really so indifferent to mile’s problem after they risked their lives to help him in the first movie? If yes, why deteriorate these established characters? Because the writers wrote themselves in a hole and needed to explain why everyone wouldnt just help spiderman, or why any spiderman, many who are pure hearted do-gooders, wouldnt help another spiderman save his dad.

I am saying a lot of critical stuff here but only because i love the first movie so much. A special hats off to the excellent soundtrack although sometimes i felt like the movie was made to fit the sound track and not the other way around

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am late to the party, I have only watched the film a few days ago. The film is fine, but it's definitely not a 10. Animation is great yes, music is great yes. Attention to details is great yes, and the story has an interesting angle.

But first, I will complain about the trailer. Honestly, it felt like i had already seen 90% of the film in the trailer, only i hadn't realized. In the trailer, you can already see that all the Spider-Men are pursing Miles and are trying to stop him, with Miguel leading the charge. So of course, while watching the film, I'm constantly waiting for this plot point to arise. Would you believe that this does not happen until at least 1 hour and a half in? Everything before is just either giving backstory, or positioning the pieces. From there, there's not that much happening. There is a final minor twist at the end (but of course, a youtuber had spoiled that for me too, even though you can see it coming). And suddenly, cliffhanger.

So, the cliffhanger deserves some criticism. I don't necessarily mind a cliffhanger in a film, a few movies pull it off well. But here, the movie simply does not solve any of its own plot lines at all and just ends there.

Back to the Future 2 also ends with a cliffhanger, but imagine if BTT2 ended before solving the almanach thing? Or imagine Infinity War ending before Thanos uses the gauntlet, or even before he gets the final gem? Or more recently imagine if Spider-Man Far from Home simply ended before the final fight with Mysterio? Those movies would feel much more incomplete, wouldnt they? It's fine to have a cliffhanger with a new story twist to set up the sequel. But not if you forgot to give the movie at least some kind of ending. The movie set up all of those plot points, but none are resolved by the end.
