A great movie with an important message. Probably better for older kids and adults, a little bit too complex for younger kids. Soul is a worthwhile watch!

However, for the questions it doesn't answer and -- more importantly -- for the risky, wallop-packing creative choices it clearly skirts past, I'm left feeling a little bit more than remiss. In any case, the animation is Pixar's best to date (I feel like I'm reiterating that with every new release from the studio) and the voice cast perform their absolute hearts out. I simply wish this was the absolute emotional thrill ride it appeared it was going to be, instead of what it actually is -- an earnest and creative endeavor, but one with a serious second act dip and a dishearteningly safe wrap-up. Easily one of the most creative and interesting plots from Pixar. And good lord, the soundtrack. I’m not talking about the jazz, which is fine. I’m talking about the spacey-magical music they play at the perfect times.

I completely adore Pixar movies, they are always so heartwarming which is what we needed in 2020. The premise is "Joe (Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz -- and he's good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have a soul". So does this warm my "Soul" or send me straight to the Great Beyond,

Firstly, I really love the main characters in this movie. Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) is a passionate Jazz pianist and music teacher but the struggles that he goes through, on Earth, are things that would resonate with a lot of people in modern times. Joe doesn't want his life to feel meaningless, wants to have that big moment in his life and no regrets. 22 (Tina Fey) is surprisingly not as annoying as trailers might make her up to be. 22 doesn't want to be reborn into Earth as she doesn't have a good view of life. A lot of the jokes she makes mostly land and she is a good contrast to Joe. What's weird is that you emphasise with the slightly optimistic Joe but also the pessimistic 22. Both characters have great character arcs that feel believable and heartwarming.

On that note, this movie tackles some mature themes that are not expected for a family movie. Most of the themes of life's purpose and regrets are something that is prominent in adults, not kids. Yet it is handled wonderfully in this movie so that kids can still enjoy it while resonating with the adults. It's very ambitious with grand ideas and definitely something unique within the Pixar animated movies. The story is also wonderful and entertaining as it is a character-driven story. It also has a very profound yet important message at the end. There are multiple phases and different type of genres within this movie such a drama story, a mystery story and even a buddy cop story halfway through the movie. However, they are all done masterfully and blend together beautifully. Of course, considering its a Pixar movie, visually it is stunning. The real world looks breathtaking and is probably better than real life. There is actually a lot of real-world stuff in the movie which I would say makes 40% of the movie which is not what the trailer would suggest. Additionally, the afterlife world is colorful, vibrant and mesmerizing. The soundtrack is also phenomenal with its jazz compositions in real-world and electronic, orchestral sound for the afterlife. Nevertheless, I do have some issues with the movie. My biggest issue with the movie is the very abrupt ending. It's not a very satisfying ending in my opinion as it leaves with a bit too many questions rather than answers. It feels like the ending is missing some things that were essential to giving a proper resolution. Furthermore, while I, as an adult, love that Pixar went bold with deeper themes, it doesn't feel like kids would get it and the message would just go over the kids head. Overall, the movie is another massive hit from the legendary studio Pixar. It's a captivating journey with gorgeous visuals, a magnificent score, an engrossing story with relatable characters. It's a near-perfect movie that is only slightly ruined by the ending. Soul hits the right emotional core and will no doubt resonate with a majority of the audience. It really was a good movie for my soul.

This is a huge step up in quality from Pixar’s previous film Onward from last year. For reference, I gave Onward a 5/10. Soul has probably the most gorgeous animation in a Pixar film and I know saying that good animation in a Pixar film is like saying water is wet but I really wanted to highlight it here because it’s incredibly gorgeous. The way Pete Docter and the animators incorporate different colors and shots for both the spirit world and New York is beyond amazing. Some might be glad to know that this film doesn’t feel like Inside Out 2 like most were predicting. They only spend maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of the movie in the spirit world and I really enjoyed a lot of the metaphysical jokes they made and the art style of it. It distinguished itself from Inside Out by doing this. The story and themes here are captivating. We learn through Jamie Foxx’s character Joe that we need to slow down and not devout ourselves to only one idea or else we will get stuck in that pit never get out. There is also a lot about our purpose and what we should do with our life which is represented through Tina Fey’s character 22. It’s surprising at how mature these themes are even for a film that is geared towards a younger audience. I have to talk about the music too because it’s great. Scratch that, it’s incredible. It’s almost all jazz music and it fits the themes and tones of the film perfectly. You couldn’t ask for a better score than this. My issues with the film are with its ending and one performance; Graham Norton. I think Norton is a fine talk show host but it was distracting whenever he was on screen here. They probably should have cast somebody else because his performance was average at best compared to the great performances from Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. The ending of this film is a little bit abrupt and a tad underwhelming. We get this absolutely incredible Jazz section with Joe reflecting on life before it takes us to a more normal ending and I kinda wish the film had been resolved in a better way. I still think the ending is good but it could have been better. If you enjoy Pixar movies or just animated movies in general then I would highly recommend this. Expand

While the underprivileged are enjoying their little slice of street corner pizza, the rich are savoring their $400 caviar in a pen-house on 40th floor; while the underprivileged are feeling the ocean sweeping over their feet on a disgusting public beach, the rich are sailing on a yacht more expensive than their entire home. Do you see it now? And this movie is telling the poor to just "watch the leaf fall" while their life-hood is quietly and slowly stolen away from them. This is so f*&k up.

We are NOT living in a society where equal effort warrants equal returns and the disparity of wealth is so staggering that fundamental systematic change is required immediately. This is NOT a time to ask people to "enjoy the little things", this is a time to ask people to make a difference, regardless what your role is in this society.

This is such a feel-good movie for lower-middle-class white people when the heroes of the movie - the black/brown communities are actually trying to make their ends meet every, single, day. So f*&k Pete Doctor and Pixar, for trying to teach black people how to live their lives and find their purpose.

Truly complicated questions can't be simply answered

Pixar has always been my favorite animation studio (along with Ghibli) and today I was lucky to watch "Soul" in a movie theatre: I can't say that I did not like "Soul", but it has a number of problems, which makes the overenthusiastic reviews from critics seem unjustified to me.

"Soul" touches upon complicated philosophical issues (the issues of life and death, as well as the search for purpose and meaning of one's own existence), which, I felt like, are too difficult not only for children who will probably fall asleep in the cinema, but also for the authors themselves, who seemed to be confused, trying to understand what they want to tell the audience in the end.

The answers and solutions to the (insoluble) existential questions offered by "Soul" seem to me somewhat unsatisfactory. Digging deeper than commercial animation filmmakers usually do, Pixar's scriptwriters have reached a level where any attempt to answer a question clearly and unequivocally, will look naive.

In "Soul" there is A LOT of things that can get more and more confusing the more you think about logic of the world created by Pixar, but it gets even more embarassing when you realise what it lacks: for example, themes of love and loneliness, past which the storyline deftly maneuvers. It's difficult for me to agree with the formula "love of life" = "the ability to enjoy little things and what we call "routine"" (A slice of pizza? Riding a bike?) = "happy life." I think this formula obviously lacks at least love, friendship and a sense of belonging to something greater than one's self.

It's possible (and sometimes even useful) to speak simply about such complex things with adults and children, but to claim to be true in this case means to impose a point of view and even show a share of ignorance, leveling thousands of years of the history of the development of existential philosophy.

However, it's still a unique and enjoyable animated film that was fun for me to watch. I think it is better to stay at this level of perception and not try to unravel the tangle, which neither Nietzsche, nor Sartre, nor Kierkegaard, nor the authors of "Soul" managed to do successfully.

*Closer to a 6.8/10.

Visually perfect and thematically interesting but lacking that final polish. The notable lack of sound design gives the movie an awkward feel, understandable since it probably had to be done in quarantine but a problem none the less. There is also a lot I feel hurts the overall narrative of the film, most notably a scene early on that calls into question the ticking clock element of the story.

A lot of fun none the less and I expect that I will get more out of it upon a rewatch.

Some people have told me: ''Pixar never disappoints''.
And I don't know about them, but for me they have, but Pixar has also produced superb classics in animation.
Fortunately Soul will fall into that category.

Soul takes a similar approach to what the studio did on Inside Out, but let's say that here it takes you to the origin source.
Everything is a metaphor of course, but the intuitive and captivating is what elevates this story.

It could hardly be classified as a kid's film, because although they will be able to enjoy it of course, what makes this film special can only be appreciated by a more mature audience.

A huge pity the film didn't get a theater release, because I would've loved to have seen it on the big screen, but that's water under the bridge, the film has been released worldwide now, and it's a wonderful adventure that I can recommend to everyone.

This movie is great. Like, really great.

Pros: Pretty much everything expect the story (eg. score, inspiration, etc)

Cons: A little bit of the story.

I honestly would have liked if Joe had gone into the great beyond, and the entire first 2 1/2 minutes of the cat - Joe plot was kind of dumb, but it was overall a outstanding film.

Even though I cannot relate to a lot of things in this movie, like the whole "my entire life's worthless" part, but dear lord even it made be understand that!

a solid 8-9/10. not a masterpiece, but an outstanding film to the other films made in this year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really great Pixar movie. I just wanna start off with that. It has breathtaking visuals, amazing music, and a great cast. Richard Ayoade keeps on being one of the best actors no one seems to recognize. The visual ideas are really inventive and interesting, "The zone" being one of the most creative things I have seen in a film. The montage towards the end of the film made me cry, and is peak Pixar. Pretty much every scene spent in the spirit realm is really great. The scenes on earth is more of a problem. They have a bit of a whiplash effect, after the creativity on display in the spirit realm. Another problem is the weird, essentially tangential part where the protagonist is turned into a cat. I really appreciate that 22 got to be a human, but couldn't she just discover the wonders of the world as a cat? Anyway, I really liked this movie, despite its mistakes. It isn't very funny, which is a bit of a sad trend with modern Pixar, but it is still pretty great. It reminds me of the glory days of pixar, of Ratatouille and Wall-e and Up. I really hope this might usher in other films like that. And also that they stop making movies like Onward. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Although it deals with issues that for some may be distressing, the film knows how to iron and entertain at the right time and in the right way.
Soundtracks are definitely an important element of, using a film expression, "getting into the bubble". However, they do not particularly stand out from those composed for other feature films in this period.
In addition, the New York reconstructed in the film is extremely interesting and curated, from the crowds, to the stalls, passing through the shops. Therefore noteworthy scenographies, enhanced by a warm and relaxing, soft, soft and delicate photography.

I love stories that have a purpose and leave its viewers with a lasting effect long after the credits roll and this film certainly accomplishes that. Soul might not be a kids film but it is one of the best animated films of the year by a long shot. Expand

Initial Thoughts:

“Soul” is one of the must see films of the year. Why? Because it has a well thought out plot that is thought provoking, and at moments in time, emotionally heartening. This film is all it claims to be and more by not just skimming the surface of what most of us think in our day-to-day lives. It reaches much further into our souls. It had me thinking who I would like to be and what I could be. Although I didn’t find the answer in 2-hours it had me wondering, what is THE spark that makes me, me?

Visually, this film is spectacular. At times I would forget that it was an animated film, but this aspect had me more invested into the incredible story. I think each individual who watches this film will have a different take and level of emotional response. Speaking for myself. At the end of the day I didn’t feel the emotional heartstrings being tugged at, but I honestly felt like my soul had been moved to want more and to be better.

The last takeaway to this film is head up. Take each day for what it is and live it to your fullest because you may never get the opportunity for a do over or second chance. Be kind to yourself and those around you, as it may trodden them in such a way that they lose hope or faith in who they are and who they are meant to be.

Overall:

Honestly, this is a must see film before the year is up. It’s visually stunning, thought provoking, and emotionally driven. Admittedly, I did have my doubts and thought this film would fall short of my expectations, which was 10/10, but instead it met them, which was a 10/10.

Enjoy the show!

As an overall movie it's pretty good with deep meaning of life searching subject matter. Problem is it's pixar so if you sit the kids down expecting Frozen or the like they're going to be bored out of their minds. This is drama with a capital D so maybe watch it before you think younger kids will enjoy it. Mine didn't. Not from a lack of quality but simply because it's just not a kids movie.

Given that I have to wonder why they would even put it in pixar's hands instead of just making it live action. The subject matter is majorly adult but the visuals are very kids movie. I didn't hate it but was very dissatisfied when I was looking for a family movie that made everyone happy.

"Soul" is a deep dive into Existentialism and Phenomenology. The film raises questions about what is consciousness, where does it come from, are we predetermined to pursue certain life tracks? The overarching theme in the film looks at how we validate a life well-lived. The characters at times are heavy-handed with the lessons to be learned but even these moments, while lacking subtly, are emotional punches when framed and supported by Reznor's score and Baptiste's compositions. Pixar again showcases their masterful animation prowess, giving the characters both exaggerated locomotions and delicate distinctly personal emotes. The attention to detail is evident in scenes of complex handwork and the facial expressions -- being able to give abstract line figures believable emotions is a testament to their craft. One thing I could not look away from was the hands in this movie -- they even make a comment "Hands are hard"-- the hands really seal the deal for me, the gesticulating of characters coupled by complex actions like instrument playing gave such a sense of believability and artistry to the whole film; I believed those to be the hands of creatives, dappled and labored but well tuned for a singular purpose. With gorgeous musical arrangements by Trent Reznor and John Baptiste, fantastic visuals unparalleled by other studios, and a relatable and evocative story, "Soul" takes viewers on a journey not soon to be forgotten. While the characters may not be as memorable as Nemo or Woody, they are not supposed to be extraordinary. The protagonist is an ordinary guy -- they named him Joe -- he has an average life and wants to make something of himself. Joe is passionate about jazz, and it is his determination to have jazz be the saving grace of his life. He pours all of his attention into it; it is his sole outlet. His life is so encumbered and distracted by his pursuit that he would still be alive if not for jazz.

It is in the light of a singular purpose that the rest of the movie revolves. I won't get into spoilers, but themes about one's purpose are centric to the film. Realizations about the depth and scope of living a well-lived life are some of the film's most poignant aspects. It is in these avenues that the existential and phenomenological approaches are embraced. The film explores how experiences affect your perspectives and, ultimately, your person. "Soul" looks at apathy vs. investment in life. Is life, the world, the universe something that exists around oneself, or is it only when experienced does it come into existence? "Soul" would argue it's the latter. The film suggests the viewer remove any self-adhered blinders and experience the world in all it's loud, overwhelming, and intimidating glory. This is the film's crux and where writer/director Pete Doctor's message as a storyteller becomes apparent. The world is something to be experienced and shared. In "Soul," this process is Jazzing. At first, Joe, does not believe that Jazzing is something one can do in any situation. However, with 22, his apathetic mentoree, he later discovers that people and the world are in a constant Jazz state. It is the act of creation that allows these experiences and individualized viewpoints to be shared. Pixar has learned how to discuss omnipresent human conditions by creating fantastic new worlds. Allowing complex themes to be unpacked through the creation of narrative devices and characters. I will note that ma 7 y.o. daughter was less engaged with this film than other Pixar movies. Doctor's other film, "Inside/Out", was more approachable thematically than "Soul". I grew up with Pixar; I was the target audience when Toy Story came out and as I have grown, so has their storytelling and complexity. Inside/Out released at such an auspicious time, my first child started to experience more complex emotions and fears. My spouse and I were having trouble relating to her. It had been decades since we were kids, and having "Inside/Out" helped us gain a perspective of all the depth behind our little one. Now "Soul" released as I enter middle age and start questioning my own life's accomplishments (It's like they have this all storyboarded or something). I think it is safe to say that Pixar is becoming a Janus in itself. There will always be the marketable and generally approachable side of Pixar (they are not bad movies, but they are more classic adventure point A to B narratives). Then there will be the "every three years" cerebral and more ambiguous release like "Inside Out" and "Soul". I have absolutely no problem with that. I enjoy watching movies with my daughter, and if at the end of the film there is some 'spalining to do, then I'm all in.

The writing was remarkable especially the story, it was beautiful, touching, deep, and shows us that no matter what we do the most important thing in life is to just be happy and that there is no right answer of how to live our lives just that to be happy with what we do with our lives. I loved how original the concept was for a Pixar and animated movie, it was outstanding. The music was exceptional, one of the best musical scores of all time. The voice acting was phenomenal especially from Tina Fey, Jamie Foxx, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayode, Phylicia Rashad, and Angela Bassett. I'm not sure why Pixar thought making a film for kids about midlife crisis, existentialism and general meaning of life, with jazz and no child characters was a good idea. Each of our boys (8,6,2) drifted off to play with Lego etc, and they NEVER do that. There seemed to be very little to which they could relate. There are almost no children in the film, my kids aren't big on jazz, and it wasn't very colourful for large parts. There was a (quite sensible) talking cat and a bit where characters poop whole slices of pizza. They liked those bits. IMO Disney can't hold a flame to Miyazaki when it comes to the mystical and this film really proved the point. But compared to other Pixar offerings it doesn't have the charm of Up or the cleverness of Inside Out. But Soul's big failing is it just isn't very much fun. Expand

Soul in my humble opinion is the most imaginative and philosophical movie Pixar has ever made. It delves into the meaning of life, the great Before and After, the purpose of our existence and the spark of our soul. The journey of selfSoul in my humble opinion is the most imaginative and philosophical movie Pixar has ever made. It delves into the meaning of life, the great Before and After, the purpose of our existence and the spark of our soul. The journey of self discovery is one we must all undertake, some sooner, some later, some never. All this is well addressed in Soul, in a very metaphysical way. Pixar animation just keeps getting better - reflections of lights on the glass panes of pictures, mottled rust on aging metro rail pillars, hazy sunlight filtered through autumn leaves. Just such a delight to watch this bustling realistic world of New York unfold. Soul is probably the most musically authentic of all Pixar movies, diving deep into Jazz and other genres. But at the end the message remains paramount - see the forest beyond the trees, see the ocean beyond the waters. Life isn’t one big moment, it’s lots of little moments, treasure them all. Expand

From what I've seen, people have thought that the "Soul" part of the movie would just be there to cater to younger audiences. However, after watching the film, I think people will realize that that's not the case. The way the soul world is intertwined with the real world can be a bit confusing at times, but is executed beautifully overall. This film is probably the most mature-themed Pixar movie I've seen. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and the storytelling is executed very well. This is probably one of the few movies that has hit close to home with me, and I can see it doing the same with others. I love to see that Pixar is constantly innovating and finding new ways to speak to the audience personally. I understand if some might not like the theme because of it's complicated nature, and it's more mature target audience, and that's okay. While there are a few shortcomings that I can't quite put my finger on currently, I think this movie has one of the most powerful messages, and definitely had an impact on me. Expand

Sad but also very wholesome at the same time. Wouldn’t rank it among my favorite but still a excellent Christmas movie way better than that other movie I watched today about some girl superhero. This was much better movie to enjoy this holiday!

With the help of a lost and rebellious soul by his side, he must try to get back into his own body while also learning about the joys of living along the way. Pixar almost never fails to put a smile on my face, even with some of their lesser efforts in the past, and this one is no exception in the smiles department for me. However, it also turned out to be one of their most mature and ambitious efforts to date! Complete with beautiful and colorful visuals, a great voice cast led by Jamie Foxx, a touching and often times funny story, a universal theme for anybody to relate to, and even a mature and impressive musical score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, it's sure to be enjoyed by just about anybody and will hopefully even make you appreciate the little things in life more! There are some familiar-feeling story beats at times, but they're more than made up for through the gorgeous animation and storytelling that Pixar's become so beloved for over the years. Overall, it may not necessarily be one of Pixar's tear-jerker flicks, and while only feeling a little formulaic in a scene or two, the film's heartwarming and unique enough to stand out as one of Pixar's best recent triumphs to date! Not because anything was too ambitious or deep, it was more how disjointed the story seemed to be between the living world and spirit world. I don't want to ruin anything but there are things that happen that flat out made zero sense and had my head scratching, especially in the last quarter of the movie. Also when the cat thing happened I was kinda like....I guess that has to be for the children because that route made way less sense to me than a fusion situation, where they were BOTH operating. It's one of those you have to just accept it's a fictional movie kind of deals.

I really enjoyed most of the characters a lot. Terry was my biggest gripe character-wise. I get you aren't supposed to like him and he's arguably the only antagonist if there is one, but he was just a means to an end obviously. I just felt like there was a struggle to connect the two realms to further the story in the writers room. There was a lot of hurrying things along near the end.

Overall a good movie that conveys a message about how our desire to seek purpose (and how those purposes can become obsessions) can take away from really "living" life. Just missed the mark a bit in the writers room.

Of course, it's visually amazing, but its storytelling couldn't aim any higher. It's about New York, the Black American experience, jazz, teaching -- and the meaning of existence. And unlike practically any other movie about jazz, the music is first-rate. (John Baptiste, Questlove, and Herbie Hancock were among the performers and consultants.) My only question is — what will young children get out of this? It's hugely entertaining, but like the director's INSIDE OUT, it tackles knotty philosophical questions and will inspire a mountain of scholarly papers. Expand
