Overall the film was mediocre it's animation & character design was impressive but the plot seemed badly written. Along the film there were scenes that didn't make sense, some even coming out of nowhere and shouldn't belong in the film. One of the most confusing of these scenes was the first, Who is Sonic's carer / mother and where did she come from? Why isn't she a hedgehog instead of an owl? Etc.
But I am grateful for some changes that had been made for the film otherwise it would've clearly gotten terrible ratings and scared children… Expand

Movie of the month not my favorite but gave it a 10 just because I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than that terrible film that is birds of prey feminists trash anyway everyone should see this period.

Super fun, super funny. My whole theater laughed so hard that at points I couldn't hear the movie. One of the most entertaining, crowd pleasers I have seen since Endgame.

I honestly don't understand the massive hype surrounding this movie. It wasn't great or terrible. It was just kind of meh. The action scenes were sorta fun but not necessarily well done. The acting at certain points in the movie was unintentionally laughable, and the rest of the time was just ok. I guess maybe I wasn't really in the prime demographic for this movie, as I am not a huge Sonic fan despite playing and enjoying some of the games. I think Sonic fans could get a kick out of it, but I'm not really sure since the movie had barely anything to do with the actual Sonic games. I'd recommend this movie to young children and big fans of the games, but not many others.… Expand

In fact, I feel quite comfortable in saying that 8-10 year old me would have really treasured this movie. It's bright, well-paced and effervescent in spirit. You get to see Jim Carrey try his damnedest to conjure up the 90's version of himself that we all fell in love with. There's some humor that works. All of the aforementioned attributes are eons further than what I expected we'd get, and I suppose that's worthy of note. That being said, though, it's far from a perfect product. In fact, the mere presence of that word -- "product" -- in this review is a bit of a Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I understand it's hard to hide the inherent bankability of a movie when it's about one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but I could have done without the three or four scenes of brand placement strewn about the picture. Also, you'll notice above that I said, "there's some humor that works," with the keyword in that sentence being "some." A lot of the jokes will go over well with kids (see the "floss," farts, etc.) but I'm betting most adults will grow tired of that and the material that's supposed to be geared more towards them, namely the pop culture references. Again, it's imperfect, but I'm a bit surprised at how watchable, nay, enjoyable a lot of it ended up being.… Expand

Since I grew up with C64, Amiga and PCs I was never really exposed to Sonic games. It is a great family movie and much better than I expected after seeing the trailers which I didn't like.

A Worthy starter film to a cinematic Sonic universe. While the story was basically "get the rings and face down Robotnik" not unlike the game. The only real problem i have with the film is the unnecessary floss references that were pretty last minute, but that is the only problem i have with this. Clearly some plot points may be improved by a sequel or 2 and the post credits is well worth the wait. The redesign in general was already worth the wait. Frankly its a genuinely good family film that is worth the 100 minutes.… Expand

Sonic's cocky personality makes for some great jokes, and makes Sonic feel more alive and like Sonic, couple that with a lot of his jokes being cheesy and it makes him feel truly like 90's Sonic. "Doughnut Lord" and "Pretzel Lady" feel a bit bland and boring that doesn't stop them from having some good moments, but overall "Doughnut Lord" and "Pretzel Lady" lack a bit depth. that is my review without going too in depth of The Sonic Movie coming from someone that's not that big a fan of the Sonic games.… Expand

Although there is not much to see about the video game world, since it mostly follows Sonic on our world, the movie has a good flow, without being to tedious. Everything is at the right dose, "not too much, not too less". Even Jim Carrey is, in my opinion, not overused ans super hyper, as I thought he would. For a kids movie, it doesn't dumb down it's plot, nothing is over-explained, no character overused. It's just right.

It really should be praised for what it is. A solid Video game movie. Only thing weird was, that the reaction of people, seeing Sonic for the first time, was pretty nonchalant, whereas the main human character, nearly had a stroke.… Expand

This is a great nostalgia trip for anyone who enjoyed Sonic on Mega Drive when growing up. Story is fair, and somewhat predicable, but this would be a great movie to introduce the kids to a Sonic that balances retro with current. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you told someone that a sonic movie, let alone a live-action movie would be successful, let alone one that would beat a DC flick in only a matter of days, you would probably get laughed at...

and yet, this is the reality we're in, and I'm glad we are; Not only did paramount listen to fans to change sonic's design before release so he wasn't some weird abomination, but instead a faithful representation of the blue blur. The only gripe I could say I have with the film is that Dr Robotnick acts like a walking r/IAmVerySmart stereotype for most of the movie and by the end it get's annoying. But the action scenes, a lot of the jokes and especially the post credits scene with tails show that not only can video game films be great, but successful too. Hopefully future video game movies will be as great.… Expand

The positives:
-The visual effects and everything were pretty good, including Sonic's more faithful redesign.
-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are moreThe positives:

-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are more interesting to me than the other characters (for obvious reasons).
-The origin story of Sonic adds something new to him that really makes you feel for him during both his best and worst moments throughout the adventure.

The negatives:
-Some characters either don't have a legitimate reason to be there or feel like they have too much going on. Carrey as Robotnik especially fits the latter, although I haven't seen much of Jim Carrey in a long while, so that may just be me.
-The plot, while still pretty decent, is just as cliched and predictable--if not rushed at times--as some critics have said. And very rarely, if ever at all, are the tropes involved played around with. This movie needed either an additional re-write or two, or at least been given a longer running time (not like Avengers: Endgame, but maybe more like the first Avengers).

Overall, this movie was a lot of fun for me. I'd say this is definitely worth seeing with the kids.… Expand

The plot has a terrible pace, which I would chock up to the introduction of elements that are not given adequate time to stew and thus feel shallow or, in some cases, just plain confusing. Why do they bother creating an original “mother figure” character in the form of some owl just to kill her off after three minutes and never mention her again? When she created the portal to send Sonic to Earth so he would be safe from the army that was after him, why didn’t she go with? The army wasn’t after her and she got taken out by a single arrow, so am I to believe she held them ALL back so Sonic could escape? How did Sonic’s human companions surprise him by redecorating their attic to resemble the cave he grew up in while he was hiding on Earth? Sonic never mentions it to anyone. When did they have time to go retrieve Sonic’s belongings without him knowing? How does Tails show up on Earth looking for Sonic when it is stated by the owl mother that Sonic has to stay hidden? I get that he goes out anyway, but I can’t imagine he had much time to make friends given his situation. Besides, Sonic is sent to Earth as a young child and we aren’t even given a glimpse of Tails before he shows up at the end in a bit of poorly implemented fan service. So the plot stinks, but the biggest injustice is that the writers take absolutely zero advantage of the property they’re writing for. Whether you’re a fan of Sonic games or Sonic memes, there is little here to excite. Ben Schwartz does say “Gotta go fast” in a rather anticlimactic fashion, and they do briefly show that terrible Sonic drawing but, beyond those things, we just get references to modern culture. Sonic flosses and makes a joke about Amazon and Find My Phone. In a more canonical sense, the movie pulls very little inspiration from Sonic’s history and is too wrapped up with presenting its own stupid ideas. Sonic can travel to different places, be they cities or planets, by using rings to create portals. Why not replace those with the Chaos Emeralds, which have been used in established canon to enable teleportation by way of Chaos Control? Sonic loses one of his quills early on, which Robotnik finds and uses to enhance his own machinery. Why not use the Chaos Emeralds, which Robotnik uses throughout established canon to power up his machinery? Sonic has this “ultimate form” type thing where he wants to protect his friends so he gets all epic and flashy and has lightning and junk and becomes super powerful. Thing is, Sonic already has a super form. It’s called Super Sonic and he attains this form by, say it with me now, using the god damn Chaos Emeralds. This team of inept writers utterly fail to understand what Sonic fans of all kinds enjoy about the franchise.

Also, the main dude and his girlfriend adopt Sonic as their weird blue alien son at the end of the movie. I don’t remember anyone’s name because they’re all extremely forgettable characters.

Jim Carrey was not a good choice for Robotnik. The kids in my particular audience didn’t laugh at a single thing he said.

The writers don’t understand the theoretical physics of slow-motion. It is very annoying to watch.

Cute movie especially for families. There is some peril and light scares involving violence but very tame. My 7 and 5 year olds both have an understanding of the Sonic franchise enjoyed the movie. Instead of spinning a more exciting story, they opted for a cheaper film with very little in the way of sets, scenes and the like, and even the overall CGI was able to be toned down by having practical sets. I get it, they didn't have a big budget, so with what there was, it was not terrible. It just felt a bit generic.

Still, at the end of the day, I felt like I could just kick back and relax and watch something wholesome. sonic or no sonic, the story was simple and wholesome. In this cynical world, I just want to get away from it all and see a beloved videogame icon have a fun adventure. It delivered on that.

In the end I felt like I only got a small taste of what I really hoped for, this was more of a prologue than a real epic adventure and that is okay. But all I can say, is that I'm ready for the sequel that they very clearly are setting up for.

I take off most of my points for the shameless product placements. That took me out of the film hard, and brought me back to the world weary cynicism I was trying to escape. I can't even eat at olive garden, and if you think I have enough money to even think about browsing homes on zillow you are sorely mistaken.

Jim Carry felt like a blast from the past, and while I would have liked an actor to play robotnik like how his actual character is, it was passable for me, and the over the top goofy aspect appealed to my love of Ace Ventura, thinking I'd never see such acting from him again.

I'm not a huge sonic fan or a film watcher, but I can easily say this film made me crack a small smile for once. So with that I suggest it.… Expand

This is the best video game movie yet. It checks all the boxes for a movie that both children and parents can enjoy. There are some stumbles in the plot, but nothing major. My only real complaint is that Sonic flossed, bro.

Really wonderful movie. Just simply a great time in the theater, I was smiling like the whole time from all the charm and I'm a grown ass man. Shockingly good writing and special effects. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jim Carrey's Robotnik was one of my favorite parts of this movie. It felt like he truly enjoyed being on set, which made him more fun and entertaining to watch. I really like sonic in the movie, too. He just has this nice personality that I really like. However, it felt like he had a mental breakdown every 10 minutes towards the beginning of the times. Donut Lord was also fun to watch in the movie. I can't put my finger on it, but he just emits this feeling that I like.

However, Sonic flosses twice, and he **** himself. The flossing didn't bother me as much as it should have, but the fart joke was uncalled for. Also, some parts just sounded cheesy.

Overall, this movie was almost everything a Sonic fan could have wanted in a Sonic movie.… Expand

Even if we do not take into account the unprecedented case of listening_to_the_audience's_feedback regarding Sonic's design and its correction, the plot of the movie itself doesn't conflict with the canon and could even place in the universe of classic games as a prequel. There were plenty of Easter eggs in the movie, which will definitely please the old fans of the supersonic hedgehog. So, as a Sonic fan, I sincerely thank everyone who worked on this movie for not ruining my childhood and the childhood of many others, you managed to make a nice family movie with a wonderful Sonic and not offend anyone. I went into the theater expecting the worst movie yet created. I was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely not "amazing" but it was entertaining and I had a good time watching it. The characterizations for a lot of the characters like Sonic, Tom, Maddie, Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone are excellent and rather humorous than I expected. Sonic especially is the character and the best aspect I adore in this movie. The movie gives a sympathetic take on Sonic and has him go through a character arc in terms of dealing with his loneliness. Once he finally meets with Tom face-to-face, the story escalates from there. Dr. Robotnik's characterization is excellent as well and Jim Carrey absolutely nails it in terms of his interpretation of the character. His arrogance and egomaniacal ways are comedic, but also make him menacing and intimidating as well, which I like as a result.

The only major problem I have with the movie is its pacing. The beginning shows how Sonic as a child is separated from what looks to be his mentor, Longclaw The Owl. The Echidnas launched an attack on them and Longclaw resorted to having Sonic be transported to another world (Earth) in order to protect him. After that however, you don't hear about Longclaw again for the rest of the movie. You also don't get to see much of what Sonic had to go through when he was a child who got transported to planet Earth. I think more scenes of Sonic's childhood would've added a bit more to his character arc. The movie instead fast-forwards to when he's a teenager who's already built up in himself a complex where he's a happy-go-lucky jokester who hides his deep sadness (A sad clown essentially). The insecurities Sonic deals with in terms of his loneliness are portrayed mostly well. I really like seeing how Sonic deep down is emotionally insecure and in need of companionship. It makes me sympathize with him very much. I also wished that there were more scenes and interactions between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik in order to make their rivalry even more powerful and intense.

Despite the flaws this movie has, I think this is one of the best video game movies so far. I find it to be far better written and funnier than Detective Pikachu. The other characters like Tom, Maddie and the rest of civilians are also surprisingly funny and likable and the cast did a brilliant job with their acting without being too cringy. Ben Schwartz is especially excellent as Sonic and portrays his playful and happy-go-lucky attitude so well. There simply is a lot to like about the movie despite its flaws. I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages and especially Sonic fans because of its references to the video game franchise. Lastly, don't leave the theater during the credits since you're in for a surprise.… Expand
