If I were you, stick all the way to the end of the movie and a surprise or two will come up thanks to the remarkable coherent direction that DC/David Sandberg has taken in terms of creating a great family superhero movie. And yes, Captain Marvel is better than 'Captain Marvel' alright. Expand

Shazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself ShazamShazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself Shazam nowadays due to an old DC lawsuit against its creators for copying Superman and the Captain Marvel name having been trademarked by Marvel Comics.

This movie may not be the most original in its genre (ironically Shazam and Doctor Sivana's dynamic resembles that of Superman and Lex Luthor, a superhero against a bald and mad scientist), but makes up for it with a funny and touching script themed around family. True to this theme, the movie even introduces Shazam's (or rather, Captain Marvel's) Marvel Family. In juxtaposition, Shazam's enemy Doctor Sivana has clear family issues. Sure there are a few plot missteps here and there (particularly the sub-plot about Billy Batson's mother which could have been handled in a better way), but it's mostly a great story. There are also a few connections with the wider DC universe, culminating in a faceless Superman making a silent cameo in the ending. In the mid-credits scene, the movie introduces Mister Mind, one of the most obscure DC villains.

Zachary Levi is great as Shazam, but I loved the buddy duo of Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy Batson and Freddy respectively. Mark Strong and Djimon Hounsou weren't as good in their roles as Doctor Sivana and the wizard Shazam.

I liked this movie and definitely want a sequel.

Shazam! has exceeded my expectations. Comedy Superhero Comedy + horror elements + passion for this kind of movies = Shazam!
The story is good (it's more than a generic story with superheroes). It develops the characters pretty decent and the acting is good (Zachary Levi is very good in this role).
The villain is ok (the powers and who gave it, to me, it seemed interesting), the CGI is ok (the flying scenes could have been better). The humor is also pretty good. I had a blast watching this movie! Stay up to the first end-credit scene, it will be worth it.

It wildly succeeds in what it sets out to do because it understands that there is nothing childish about childhood or children's entertainment. Irregardless of the invulnerability of its title character or the power fantasy inherent in the superhero genre, the film embraces a disarming vulnerability and emotional intelligence. The movie never forgets that while childhood is full of wonder, humor and escapism, it is also full of fear, loneliness, and struggle. Where other recent comic book movies are built behind a smug aura of "cool face," cheap sentimentality, or winking humor, Shazam! earns its attitude and big laughs by leaning in to the humanity, complex emotions, and social longing inherent in comic book mythology. The film is decidedly on a smaller scale that what we've come to expect in the genre, both in times of budget, star power, and 'end of the world' dramatics, but rather than diminishing the impact of the film, it heightens the very real and emotionally powerful stakes of family and friendship. The villain is really poor, the bad bad guy. The film doesn't have a very complex plot, the guy is thirsty for power and wants the ones that the protagonist has and uses the 7 deadly sins (which are mythological monsters) to try to get them. It touches very important issues about the true meaning of family and heroism. It reminds us of The Goonies, Stand By Me, The Greatest American Hero and Big. Wonder Woman is better but this one is better than Aquaman. Same light and cool tone since Justice League and this is the perfect path that DC found to compete against Marvel. The movie is very long, in the middle it becomes heavy and slow, 1 hour and 45 minutes would have been better. Expand

The opening scene isn't what i was expecting, it was chilling. Zachery Levi was perfect casting here, it is hard to imagine someone else could play a 15 years old boy in a grown up man's body. Eventhough Shazam is not as good as or as thematical the original Spider Man movie IMO and the villain is not developed well enough, it still stands out and really has the tone of those movies, and the ending is awesome. The acting by Zach Levi was on point, and the more serious topics addressed were handled in a realistic and thoughtful manner. The characters ultimately change from cynical and selfish to the hero you were hoping for in a way that didn't feel overly optimistic, and how I would expect a 14 year old with a traumatic past to handle a situation like this. The trailers made it look like a throw away that the studio had no confidence in. The actor was poorly cast, the muscle suit looked like something out of an SNL skit, and the effects looked like they belonged on one of the CW Arrow-verse shows.
The preliminary reviews and RT critic scores gave me hope that maybe it was a sleeper-hit, so I actually allowed myself to get excited.
We went on Thursday opening night, which was super easy because the theater wasn't even 1/3 of the way full.
By the middle of the movie, I could already tell that all my original fears were actually true, and beyond that, the "villain" was insanely throw away and forgettable.

The short review: A funny superhero origin story that gradually loses its shine due to lack of seriousness and later becomes something akin to a Power Rangers film. The kids would love it!

Related media: I have not read the comics on this hero nor watched cartoons based on this character.

What's it like?: This film has elements of past films where teenagers are suddenly given powers (for example Spider-man's story), Big (1988) and films on Power Rangers.

Mid- or post-credit scenes: There's one in the middle and one at the end (that has a great punchline).

Positives: 1) The film is funny in many places, though this becomes less frequent over time.

2) The caring nature of the foster home's parents is an inspiration to all. If only all foster homes are like that!

Negatives: 1) The film lacks sharpness. There are many instances where Shazam! could have been killed off, but wasn't, simply because this is a children film. Relatedly, the villain is not clinical enough and seems to do the cliche over-confident villain thing of taking his sweet time to kill off our hero. Boohoo!

2) The 'S' in Shazam! is referring to the wisdom of Solomon. Despite being given the powers of Shazam!, this hero did not get all that wise! He remained a dumb kid, doing dumb things in dumb ways. Sure, there were instances where he had showed wisdom, but they were not beyond the level of an adult nor at the level of a superhero. 3) The film's running time could have been compressed by some 30 minutes. A few tropes are repeatedly shown and everything just moves somewhat slowly, as if the film is meant for kids.

4)Shazam! foster brother, Freddy, is a rather irritating character.

5) Late on, the story degenerates into a Power Rangers trope, which is both interesting and disappointing. If the film had been more clinical, then this would not have been necessary.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Excellent

Teens: Good

Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Average

Old adults: Average Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Save your money and watch it on TV.

Perhaps had I been a bit younger the jokes would have landed more often (although one of the gags truly had me in stitches), but regardless the last 30 minutes let me down to the extent that I adjusted my mid-movie rating from an 8 to a 6. Truly the sweetest and most wholesomeThe road that is the DCEU hasn't exactly been a smooth one at times, but if "Aquaman" and this offering are concerned, the future is certainly a lot brighter than what we've gotten prior to now. Truly the sweetest and most wholesome adaptation in the DCEU catalogue to date, "Shazam!" soars high on the absolutely winsome and hilarious lead performance from Zachary Levi, and an ultimately fresh concept in play. Not only does the "Big-esque" angle lend for a number of almost endlessly entertaining comedic bits, but the whole interpretation of family at the film's center ends up feeding into an emotional core that surprised me more than anything else. Above being an absolute laugh riot, a thoroughly engrossing origin story, and a performance showcase on the part of Zachary Levi, "Shazam!" is also a movie that cares about what it's trying to say. And that means a lot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Think a mash-up of "Superman," "Big" and "Jumanji"... Yes, spoilers ahead if you keep reading. I very much enjoyed this film. Zach Levi (from "Chuck") was born to play this role. My only criticism of his performance is that the younger (non-Shazam) version of himself is cynical, shrewd, and not all that funny - he's been through a lot having been abandoned by his mother, so it makes sense. When he's in the BIG role, he's much more, for lack of a better word, "goofy." The consistency is not there, but this didn't kill it for me. Much more importantly, the casting director found Jack Dylan Grazer to play Freddy Freeman. Believe it or not, he's the beating heart of this film. Brilliant work- extremely funny but not in the typical "sassy teen" way. If you can't feel for him, everything else falls apart. I also absolutely loved Cooper Andrews (Jerry from The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans as the foster parents. They're more tangibly "real" than any other parents in these superhero flicks. Believe it or not, Mark Strong is only OK in this film. Sure, he's the bad guy, and they give him a really good back story which I won't spoil, but he doesn't bring a unique spin to the all-powerful menacing force. I also liked exacxtly how they acknowledge the other existing DC superheroes in this world - Batman, Superman, etc. are a "thing", but they handle it in a very organic way - if you're a fan of thse things, you'll smile. BIGGER spoiler (without giving too much up).... When the entire family goes through their "thing" toward the end, the casting director did a phenomenal job - all those new parts are all perfectly cast. Love all those actors - particularly Michelle Borth (Hawaii 5-0) and Meagan Good. Triumphant ending. Recommended for sure. Expand
