Wow, it looks like people downvoted negative reviews completely out of spite alone, smh.

I just watched this for the first time on RedBox. It looked like a good movie from the trailers. I was wrong. Mainly, this is a movie for teenagers or younger possibly (pg-13 though?). The plot was very basic, clearly written to a child's level. The villain was pretty lame and barely dangerous. A lot of downtime where nothing seemed to be going on, it was boring at times. The dialogue was cringey at times, seemed lazy or just poorly written, however realizing at the end that this was a kids movie, probably just dumbed down. I seriously considered turning it off around half-way through. Honestly not sure I'm going to give DC movies another chance. Very disappointing.

When I saw the actor for Shazam is Zachary, I was disappointed, but after I watched it, he surprised me, actually he did a great job.

My only negative point in the movie is the character of the kid "Billy", I didn't see any match between him and "Zachary", "Billy" is so depressed and serious, in contrast, "Zachary" is so funny and talkative!!! I think "Freddy" character is more fit for this role instead of "Billy" character.

Finally, "Shazam!" is generally fun and worth to watch, beside it's suitable for all kids.

Yeah I was way more entertained by this movie than I had any business being. DC is actually standing on its own legs for the first time since they started chasing Marvel.

It delivers as a comedy, and for once it actually feels like somebody stopped and tried to make something unique out of the subject matter. Also, I would like to congratulate DC on their first interesting villain since Zod. I normally understand that everybody has their tastes, but I'm genuinely puzzled to see that some people were disappointed with this movie. Indifferent, maybe... but to actually dislike it is weird to me.

The bus scene was a bit much though.

Having been a huge comic book fan as a child - I want to watch all of these super hero movies! After watching it, all I can say is that there is just once scene after the next of poor acting, complete lack of character development on all fronts that led me down a path of actually becoming more and more annoyed. In one scene, Shazam catches a bus full of people by the front windows...and everyone in the bus had just fallen about 4 stories - yet nobody was hurt. The drop and sudden "catch" of an event like that would have jarred everyone with impact...and can somebody tell me how the glass would be able to hold all of that weight?

Let's just put it this way, this movie wasn't meant for adults, or anybody who actually like Shazam! in the comic books.

Zachary Levi actually makes me believe their is a child in that adult sized body! He is the best part of the movie. A great origin movie and a great place to move on from. It did feel to drag on at times, but the CGI and humor were spot on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Easily one of the better DCEU films, but DC still needs to find a cohesive voice when telling a film and has a long way to go. My friend and I both agreed that at times, it was like watching two different films. The film opens with kid Sivana in the back seat of the car driving through the snow, car crashes and we meet the old Wizard. Sivana fails the wizards test and BOOM, that's the villains origin story. He wanted to be a wizard but he couldn't ... as far as origin stories and villains go, Sivana had no nuance, no appeal he was just angry-bad-man-4072. He sucked. The scenes he dominated were dark and serious and his character was really flat, he was so obviously just there to be a villain, it would have done his character justice to show some empathy or give him some redeeming quality or a goal (literally ANY goal, once he got those forgettable-shadow-demon things that were based on the 7-deadly sins, he had no endgame. He was just as bland and forgettable as the 7 CGI monsters that were supposed to look unique but all looked exactly the same). HOWEVER, the one redeeming quality of this movie was its heroes. Billy and Freddy were absolutely spectacular characters. The tone of the film does a total 180 when we get to Billy and Freddy, the colour tone shifts and the mood elevates, this is what I mean when I say it was like watching two different movies. Billy and Freddy had the better story, Sivana was uncooked and uninspired. Billy has a chip on his shoulder and he isn't the nicest character when we first get to know him, but he's genuine and he has motivations we can sympathise with, he feels real. The more we see of him, the more his rough exterior makes sense and when he bonds with Freddy a beautiful relationship between these two brothers is born. They out the best and worst in eachother as Billy embraces the perks of being a superhero and starts to leave Freddy behind. He finally realises being a superhero isn't much fun when you can't share it with your best friend and brother, it is BILLY, rather than his superhero persona SHAZAM that is the main appeal of this film. The superhero elements were so-so, largely due to the underwhelming final fight scene and the snore-inducing villain. All in all, it's a good film with some pretty funny beats, a fantastic film about brotherly love and male-friendships but DC still don't know how to tell an entirely cohesive story and undercooks the main villain to the point where he's just served raw and my immediate thoughts were "What's the point in Sivana anyway?" Go for an unusual coming of age story, but not if you want to see a good battle of hero v villain. Expand

But going through the end battle when they all became superheros killed the movie and the story for me. Very stupid move by stupid writers who does not even know what they doing. Why would you come up with a cool idea of a superhero then kill that idea at the same time? How is it going to be cool or special when they all can turn into shazam? Expand

As always, let’s get the negatives out of the way. The visual effects were mediocre in the beginning and progressively got worse until the end. Only 1 of the child actors didn’t do a good job. 50% of the jokes either had no impact or were not funny to me. The first half of the film’s tone was really inconsistent. Other than that, this movie is amazing. Zachary Levi did an amazing job as Shazam and was the best part of the film. All the other actors did a great job and the villain was interesting and unique. We do get to see the villain’s backstory as the first part of the film which is different and unique for a Superhero film. The cinematography was good and the 2nd half of the film’s tone remained consistent. The plot was really solid and the other 50% of the jokes got a smile or a laugh out of me. The film does use some pop culture songs effectively, unlike Suicide Squad and they fit well into the narrative. I highly recommend seeing this film. Overall, Shazam! Provides an easy going, mostly funny superhero experience with a great cast, a great villain, and a great story. I give Shazam! an 8/10. Expand

Shazam! is a great superhero film, with good action and humor. but when you look under the surface, it only gets better, with a ton of subtext and depth to the story that really makes the world come to life. Billy's story is fun, and relatable, a great adaptation to the modern day while at the same time staying true to it's classic roots. must see.

A fun movie that really taps into the inner child of anyone who grew up wishing they were granted superpowers, and could rise above what cards life had given them.
The humor is good, the journey is meaningful, with a strong emphasis on family, and the villain - although not phenomenal - is portrayed well enough on screen that I did not want him gone at the end.
The strongest emphasis is on the comedy, though, and if you're interested in a hero's journey that's fun and wholesome, Shazam delivers.

Despite the fact that Shazam! is a DC Film, I had high hopes for it, after all the previews were terrific, it's a somewhat unique story, and it features two of the most popular young actors in all of Hollywood, however as is often the caseDespite the fact that Shazam! is a DC Film, I had high hopes for it, after all the previews were terrific, it's a somewhat unique story, and it features two of the most popular young actors in all of Hollywood, however as is often the case with DC Films, I was disappointed. After participating in an act of selfless kindness, teenager Billy Bates (Asher Angel), is whisked away to another place. In this strange place, he meets a man claiming to be a high priest, who guards very special powers that can defeat all the evil in the world, powers he must relinquish. To receive these powers, all Billy has to do is say the mans name, Shazam, and just like that, Billy is a superhero. As expected, the young cast members Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Glazer had terrific chemistry and were the source of the majority of the funny moments that took place. Zachary Levi is also very good, but as DC tends to do, they gave away this entire film in the previews. Everything that looked funny, interesting, or unique about Shazam, is right in the preview. As for the rest of the film, the story is okay at best, with plenty of parts that were completely unnecessary, leading to a film that was over two hours long. Shazam was in fact about forty-five minutes longer than it needed to be, and not only was that obvious, but the filmmakers seem to know this as well, filling in a lot of scenes with boring **** that took a lot away from something with real potential. The film goes around in circle for a while, before we get to the ending and as is common for DC, the ending is a disaster. I would have to spoil too much of the film to explain to you exactly why that is, but if I'm to be honest, the ending really killed the whole film for me. I enjoyed the humor, I liked the fact that were some elements not often seen in the superhero genre, and I liked the interactions between young cast members. What I didn't appreciate was how the plot is constantly re-capped for us and I hated seeing similar scenes multiple times, especially when they don't move the story forward. I would say I'd recommend this film more towards children than adults, but the truth is, the kids in the theater with me were all restless around the ninety minute mark. The bottom line, Shazam! isn't a stinker and it drew enough interest in theaters to probably get a sequel, but in my opinion once again DC dropped the ball on a great idea and spoiled the whole thing in the trailer. Me a few years ago: "Hey DC, are you trying to f**k this up on purpose? Seriously! What the hell is going on over there."

DC: OK Matt

Me after Shazam: Well, that's more like it.

I've been harsh at DC for awhile now, but for good reasons. I don't want them to fail, it's just that they keep missing the point. However they are listening and improving. If this is the direction DC is taking, then I think it will exciting and ambitious, if done properly.

'Shazam!' is the true hero DC needs right now, right behind 'Wonder Women' for this rocky cinematic universe. It’s fun, light-hearted, funny and embraces the corniness. Although don’t let that trick you into thinking it doesn’t have any serious moments, because when it gets dark, it’s absolutely terrifying and no surprise the director’s previous work are horror movies. Throughout the movie, I would occasionally have flashbacks to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Not to say it’s a great or perfect movie, as it’s got problems. The visual effects looked pretty good (for the most part), however the other times it either looks out of place or unfinished, like needed more time to polish up. It takes a while for things to get moving in the first act, and not to say it’s dull, just padding along. And that’s really it for issues.

Zachary Levi is an absolute joy to watch as Shazam and the older version of Billy. Levi oozes with charisma and a clear indication from his introduction he was born to play this role. I can’t imagine any other actor in the role than him. There was never a scene where I didn’t buy him as a kid in a man’s body. Asher Angel as Billy Batson also did a great job, especially during the more dramatic scenes, which I thought he performed beautifully. Levi had the comedic elements, while Asher had the emotional elements.

Jack Dylan Grazer is great once again and a promising young star. He can express some much emotion through his face and eyes, despite looking like he’s up to something. The chemistry between him and Levi (and Asher) are dynamic.

Mark Strong plays the main villain Dr. Sivana, which Strong best describes him as “an evil son of a b**ch”. While not the best or the most compelling villain of all time, but at least his motivations are clear and you understand what he’s been through. Heck, the film starts with a young Sivana experiencing a traumatic event that shaped him to be what he is. I can tell Mark Strong was having a blast and he was menacing enough to be a threat.

The other child actors were also pretty good, although some of them took a while to fully grow on me. Once they did, it was good and dandy. Also the foster parents are the sweetest people in the world.

Another thing to mention is how genuinely well written it is. The humor and the punchline to every joke was surprisingly funny, which I didn’t expect judging by how cringe the trailers falsely advert it. I find it compelling that we see Billy learning how to use his given powers step by step, even the end climax he’s still learning. David Sandberg manages to juggle some many themes and tones, but impressively never came off as “too much” or a train wreck that any new director with a background in small budget movies would struggle at.

Still, I can’t believe a movie like “Shazam!” exist in the same universe as the bleak ‘Batman V Superman’ and the third worst thing to happen to America “Suicide Squad”. Even a familiar f̶a̶c̶e̶ shows up at the end.

Overall rating: Just say the name

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting from a DC movie. We all know they're very often a total disaster. But after watching Shazam I'm really shook, this movie wasn't that bad. In my opinion the thing that made this movie pleasure to watch were the jokes and funny situations. Everything thanks to our main protagonist who is really fantastic, and we can clearly see that the actor is having lots of fun while playing this role. The plot itself is interesting, I was enjoying the overall history. I think we can devide this movie into 3 parts. Before he gets his powers, when he already has them and fighting with villain. You can guess the second part was the best, really enjoyable, funny and interesting. For me the first part was really boring and i was sitting here thinking "when the movie will start already?". But suprisingly the last part was weak too. Shazam and villain were like dog and cat, they were just looking and screaming at each other without interesting moments, fights or stuff like that. The villain is the one from "because i wanted to" group which is really disappointing and he is really uninteresting. At the end I wanted to add that the sins look horrible, the cgi is gross and I couldn't stand looking at them.
But to sum up I have to say that despite all the little things that were really weird and uniteresting i enjoyed it and had fun :)

One very good example being Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, Peter Parker was relatable so were the people he cared for and later on in the movie when the stakes where high we felt the emotional depth of losing a loved one. In that regards Shazam is very similar where the stakes were high for the main characters of the movie and by this it was able to tell us a very personal, character centric story with family values at heart.

Shazam is a superhero movie where action was never the main priority of the movie , before the word "Shazam" are first spoken we are well versed with Billy Batson (Shazam alter ego), Freddy( Billy Foster brother) , the rest of foster family and the villain. It may be called a slow start by some but what it does is that later on in the movie when these character makes a huge decision or anyone of them is in peril you feel the emotional impact too as the viewer. The actors were very well casted especially the character of Freddy, Billy Batson and Shazam who are played by Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel and Zachary Levi respectively. Jack stole the show in every scene he was in , Asher successfully bought depth where it was needed and Zachary played a 14 year old like a 14 year old and not some adult acting stupid and weird. The villain played by Mark Strong is also set up a little bit to provide contrast to the protagonist. There was nothing special about him other than providing the stage for protagonist to grow as a character which is okay for an origin movie.
The Movie was directed by David F. Sandberg who is a huge inspiration for young film-makers, he only had a Youtube channel few years ago and now he has directed 3 Hollywood movies. I liked his direction for the most part especially how he was able to tell a great story with developed characters and he also managed to inject some horror elements ( his usual genre style) which were great although I think the actions scene could have been better like in final battle slow motions were used unnecessarily . The final battle also seemed a tad bit longer than it had to be, although it was able to drive home the point of true meaning a family successfully which was the whole point anyway.
I think the cinematography was very basic and didn't worked for me and the soundtrack was nothing special too which were strong suit of previous DC movies.
Having said that Shazam delivered in most of the areas like characters, story and humor and never in its 2hr 12min run time it made me bored, although I wished the cinematography and soundtrack were a bit better. Ultimately I think this movie was not about saying "Shazam" but what it means to say the word "Shazam!".

However, with Shazam!, I was laughing out loud at close to 50% of what was thrown my way. Albeit the laughs may be entirely based around character stupidity, this was my movie to enjoy nonetheless. Zachary Levi had me entertained with his sheer presence alone. What keeps it from perfection are some childish moments towards the end, some lackluster storytelling regarding the backstory, and a villain that could have used some work... Regardless, it was a heck of a good time at the cinema. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1) Totally predictable story, as we've seen in many, many, many movies. 2) Except for Zachary Levi, all other actors are really bad. 3) Lame attempt at humour: I've found about two scenes that are really funny, other than those, nobody did laugh on my session - they have even insisted on an incredibly lame joke FOUR TIMES in the movie (yes, Santa jokes).
4) There was so much potential on the true villains (seven sins) side to be explored, yet I don't even know the bald guy's name. The villain guy is just plain evil without motives other than a kid's frustration - and he's SO POWERFUL AND YET, FOR NO REASON, he wants to fight Shazam, simply because he wants to be alone! That's not very creative.
5) And to kill the movie: add some heartwarming moral lesson about family and whatever. Ok I get it, it's a family movie. But then, it's a movie for kids, not worth it if you're over 20 years old. 6) At least CGI is good enough.

Formerly known by his original name, Captain Marvel before he was officially renamed in 2011, Shazam is making his return to the big screen since 1941 in his solo movie as the seventh instalment in DC Extended Universe after many years of development hell that originated since the 2000s.

Billy Batson (Angel) is a fourteen years old teenager and an orphan who has ran away from many orphanages in six counties to search for his biological mother until he was arrested by the police. He is later place under the care of Victor and Rosa Vazquez, whom they also took in five other foster children in their house.

One of the foster children, Freddy Freeman, befriends Billy and shares his love for superheroes with him. At Sivana Industries, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong) found a way to return to the Rock of Eternity where he first met Shazam the Wizard when he was a child. Feeling angry that he was rejected by the wizard in the past, he steals the Eye of Sin and takes control of The Seven Deadly Sins.

At school, Billy beats up the bullies to save Freddy. When he manages to escape from them by boarding the train in the subway, he is transported to the Rock of Eternity where he meets the wizard. He chooses Billy to be his champion by telling him to say his name so that he can pass on his power to him. Billy calls out his name and he transform into an adult superhero called Shazam (Levi). After the wizard died, Billy seeks Freddy’s help to explore his newfound powers. All is fun and games for both of them until Billy comes face-to-face with Dr. Sivana, who wants his power.

Looks like DC hits another home run for this franchise. This movie is quite awesome next to Wonder Woman and Aquaman. It is also one of the best movies in this franchise and much better than Marvel’s Captain Marvel. I am very impressed with David F. Sandberg’s direction for this movie. Although he had two horror movies in his résumé, he manages to pull off a light-hearted and very fun superhero film. I had doubts at first but he proved me wrong.

The plot of the movie is nothing too cliché and it is full of comedy which I really enjoyed and laughed so many times. Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer gave their best performances and they are one of the best parts of the movie. Mark Strong also gave his best performance as a supervillain since 2011’s Green Lantern which he portrayed Sinestro. I can say that his role in this movie earned himself redemption from that critically flop movie.

What makes the movie even more fun besides comedy is it has many Easter Eggs and references to the past instalments including a special cameo which I will not spoil it here. You can certainly enjoy spotting them while watching. The central theme of the movie, family, is very well executed and it is very relatable and connected to many people especially to those who are or were orphans in their life. For a low budget superhero movie, the CGIs were very impressively made and not looking too fake.

Let’s hope that DC and Warner Bros. keep up with the momentum and continue with this trend for all upcoming instalments. I will continue to look forward for the next instalments in this franchise. Before you leave the cinema, there is a mid-credits scene and a post credits scene you would not want to miss them.

Probably people who are just knowing them now will find them more attractive but the formula remains the same and is really, really stucked.

I couldn't help feeling an enormous reminiscence in this film from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even the ending credits sequence with a song from The Ramones.

Shazam doesn't offer any surprises. It's basically Big with superheroes. Even the film recognizes it in a small scene.
This film definitely makes it clear that Warner is pointing more towards the Marvel style which is neither good nor bad but neither better.
It's entertaining within the basics. It adds a new, more humorous character to DC's film universe but the film itself has no memorable elements at all.

With movies like Aquaman and Shazam DC are starting to find their footing and I look forward to more from the .

In short the story of Shazam is about this boy with a pure heart gets powers from a wizard, now the movieis not too different from this premise but there is a little twist to it without spoiling much the pure heart thing goes a different direction and I liked that. Billy Batson played by Asher Angel did a good job, the dude is a good actor and him Jack Grazer who played Freddy Freeman, Billy's friend and adopted brother and Zachary Levy carried tnis movie. All of them had charm, wit and had very good emotional scenes when needed. Zachery Levy was good as Shazam you actually believed he was a child in a mans body , he also looked cool, goofy, funny and charismatic in the role so that's a big up.

The side characters like Billy's adopted brothers and sisters were okay until the last act when something really cool happened I didn't suspect with all those characters and DC nalied it perfectly. The action to be honest was subpar and there weren't any memorable action sequences maybe some flashy moments when Shazam used his powers but the action was forgettable not necessarily bad but nothing spectacular. The tone and pacing of the movie was done really good, the overall tone of the movie was light-hearted and fun but emotional and serious when needed to be and you can't ask more than that. The first half took time to flesh out the characters and to have fun,be silly and didn't take itself seriously especially Shazam and Freddy. The move really nailed the concept of "what would a kid do if he had superpowers" and the movie portrayed that point nicely. Although the second half was really slow and the action was underwhelming, the story was great, suprising and slightly unpredictable along with its convincing character development.

Like a said the movie had a lot of heart as you cared for the characters and they motivations, even the villain Doctor Sivana and the story arcs get resolved pretty satisfyingly. Now the villain Doctor Sivana played by Mark Strong had a pretty good story and the beginning of the movie and had a pretty compelling reason to beba villain he just turned out be be meh and generic by the end, Mark Strong was awesome but the character wasn't developed any further.

The movie didn't have anything that was majorly bad but the pacing during the second half of the movie was rather slow and the action overall was underwhelming. Also the CGI was really good throughout the movie until the had to put some CGI on a certain character's muscles with was kinda bad but not completely terrible. The humor was also well timed and funny and not forced unlike some Marvel movies(sorry I just had to say it).

I really enjoyed Shazam it was a very good movie, with a great story, funny comedy and the most interesting thing you can take away is it had heart, not the action or comedy but this DC movie had a lot of heart and I hope more DC movies continue on with this trend.

Let’s hope it doesn’t get ahead of itself, but with much deserved hits such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman and most recently Shazam! it’s hard to deny they are doing something right. Shazam! is a great superhero film that brings a golden age sense of humour and a dark and interesting plot line together. Zachary Levi (Shazam) is great for his role as a kid trapped in a adults body, I did feel as if Zachary Levi was not the best portrayal of how Billy Batson would act if he was a superhero, but that is a small point. Jack Dylan Grazer is one of the best actors in the film, he portrays a nerdy “sidekick” to Shazam but not without its ups and downs. The villain is played by Mark Strong, I thought he was a terrifyingly cool and serious addition to Shazam!. The monsters that Mark Strong (Sivanna) control are a low point to the film, the VFX made them look fake and lifeless ( I get they might have been trying to portray this but i didn’t think it worked.) It’s hard to find a superhero film that is a perfect blend of funny, serious, dark, exciting and entertaining and this definitely meets those standards! Expand

Shazam is so close to delivering a home run and one of the best superhero films in years, and it's a very hard film to quibble with. Shazam is smart and sincere and dorky and fun in all the right ways. You root for Shazam / Billy Batson throughout the film, and you also get a great villain to boot. Asher Angel is the perfect Billy Batson. Shazam rightly pulls back on the grandeur and delivers a fresh, sharp, and down-right wonderful piece of popcorn cinema. Fresh, fun and magical. What might have been an average movie with the wrong lead turns out to be an excellent vehicle for Angel's budding talent and Strong's experienced charm. Very good movie! but not without flaws, such as monster CGI, and expected ending "twist".
but overall very fun :) DC is doing well.

Really enjoyed it, there were so many cool scenes, also Zachary Levi nailed it, the OST was great.

This movie has a blend of humor and heart with great plot and entertain scenes making it one of the best DC movie ever made thanks to Zachary Levi, the actor who was born to play Shazam

I haven't forgotten Wonder Woman, it had a lot going for it but I can't say it's a great film, it should have been but we can only hope that Wonder Woman 1984 will up the standard. Shazam on the other hand is a great, hilarious and heartfelt film that I never expected to be quite as good as it was. Who would have suspected a comedy would have brought DC out of its rut. No seriously, comedy isn't exactly DC's forte I mean the last time they tried too hard to be funny we got Suicide Squad and I think I speak for almost everyone here when I say we all wish we could erase that one from our memory. Well done DC for gifting us with a lighthearted superhero film that delivers on the action and the comedy.

Fourteen year old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) becomes every kids dream when he suddenly acquires a vast range of superpowers by simply shouting the word SHAZAM, turning him into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). Shazam is having a great time testing the limits of his new-found abilities with the help of his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) but quickly realises he'll need to figure out his true potential if he has any hope of fighting his arch nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). Pure fun, incredibly entertaining and very funny with more than a few laugh out loud moments. You can see the entire cast having a great time with this film, Levi's infectious and charismatic performance shines through and you can't help but enjoy yourself. Mark Strong may be typecast as a villain at this point and why shouldn't he be? He always plays a villain role to perfection. The chemistry is simply electric, DC normally chooses wisely with its casting and the same can be said for Shazam. It's a film suitable for all ages, you can just sit back and enjoy. Although a little on the long side, and would probably benefit from losing about ten minutes. If you need a Superhero fix before Endgame then Shazam should be your choice, highly recommended.

Big with super powers is almost perfect. I didn't so much care about the actual fight scenes, but instead the comedy and strong chemistry with the family. Overall a low 8 an A-.

The constant jokes might be enough for you, and that's a good thing. Because for me, they weren't funny or clever enough to distract me from how bland this movie actually is.

Shazam was an all around fun movie. There was jokes, there was wizards, there was demons, but most importantly there was character development. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and felt it had very good pacing throughout.
