This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Think a mash-up of "Superman," "Big" and "Jumanji"... Yes, spoilers ahead if you keep reading. I very much enjoyed this film. Zach Levi (from "Chuck") was born to play this role. My only criticism of his performance is that the younger (non-Shazam) version of himself is cynical, shrewd, and not all that funny - he's been through a lot having been abandoned by his mother, so it makes sense. When he's in the BIG role, he's much more, for lack of a better word, "goofy." The consistency is not there, but this didn't kill it for me. Much more importantly, the casting director found Jack Dylan Grazer to play Freddy Freeman. Believe it or not, he's the beating heart of this film. Brilliant work- extremely funny but not in the typical "sassy teen" way. If you can't feel for him, everything else falls apart. I also absolutely loved Cooper Andrews (Jerry from The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans as the foster parents. They're more tangibly "real" than any other parents in these superhero flicks. Believe it or not, Mark Strong is only OK in this film. Sure, he's the bad guy, and they give him a really good back story which I won't spoil, but he doesn't bring a unique spin to the all-powerful menacing force. I also liked exacxtly how they acknowledge the other existing DC superheroes in this world - Batman, Superman, etc. are a "thing", but they handle it in a very organic way - if you're a fan of thse things, you'll smile. BIGGER spoiler (without giving too much up).... When the entire family goes through their "thing" toward the end, the casting director did a phenomenal job - all those new parts are all perfectly cast. Love all those actors - particularly Michelle Borth (Hawaii 5-0) and Meagan Good. Triumphant ending. Recommended for sure. Expand

Shazam is just a hell of a lot of fun. It's funny, it's quick, and the actors are all incredibly sympathetic. The concept is simple but entirely effective. My sneak preview screening was met by roars of approval, big laughs, and applause at the end. If you're going to see it, by all means, stay for the credit sequence (with a bad-ass Ramones song underlying it). Clearly, the makers of this movie are comic book lovers. Expand

If this is the direction that the DCEU is going in, I might just have to consider myself a fan! This movie had a great story, great characters, solid jokes, a good script, and a lot of heart! It reminded me a lot of Spider-Man Homecoming. It’s a much smaller-scale superhero story, focussing on a small cast of characters and not existing solely to set up sequels. *cough*Batman v Superman*cough* I really like how authentic this movie felt. It takes place in a universe where superheroes exist, but they aren’t going around flying everywhere. The connections to the other movies are loose. That’s probably what a universe full of superheroes would really be like. They would be rare. You wouldn’t see them every day. The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t really feel that way to me. It’s missing that human element of what it’s like to live in a universe full of heroes and gods just as a regular average citizen. Maybe that’s why I don’t really like the MCU that much. Maybe that’s why Ioved Spider-Man Homecoming so much. I like stories about regular people living in larger-than-life universes. Anyway, back to Shazam, this is a must-see for any fan of superheroes and family comedies! Maybe don’t take the little ones though. I was kinda surprised, this movie looks really kid-friendly, it has a main cast of mostly child actors who do a really good job, but it actually has some really scary parts! There were kids crying in my theatre. Just a heads-up. All that aside, I loved this movie, it’s a ton of fun. Highly recommended! Now the only movie from the DCEU I haven’t seen is Man of Steel. (I finally watched Wonder Woman. It’s good.) Should I go watch it or should I let my positive feelings for the DCEU stay a little longer? Hmm... Expand

But I do know is that Dawn Of Justice had divided reviews among critics and audiences, similar to 2017's Justice League. I still can't wait for Fury Of The Gods and I hope it has the same consistent charm that Zachary Levi brings to Shazam! Expand

Wow, it looks like people downvoted negative reviews completely out of spite alone, smh.

I just watched this for the first time on RedBox. It looked like a good movie from the trailers. I was wrong. Mainly, this is a movie for teenagers or younger possibly (pg-13 though?). The plot was very basic, clearly written to a child's level. The villain was pretty lame and barely dangerous. A lot of downtime where nothing seemed to be going on, it was boring at times. The dialogue was cringey at times, seemed lazy or just poorly written, however realizing at the end that this was a kids movie, probably just dumbed down. I seriously considered turning it off around half-way through. Honestly not sure I'm going to give DC movies another chance. Very disappointing.

The plot keeps you on your feet and there’s never really a dull beat and features a great climax. While lighthearted, not all the jokes really hit it for me, but the overall optimism coming from this movie was nice. However, the film was not as unique-looking as other DCEU movies and the CG was a bit mediocre. The opening scene isn't what i was expecting, it was chilling. Zachery Levi was perfect casting here, it is hard to imagine someone else could play a 15 years old boy in a grown up man's body. The movie has the same mediocre special effects of most DC movies.
Most of the acting was pretty darn good.

Humor was more entertaining than the times it fell flat. (Santa)

The beginning was a solid 8. Could have been a 9 if it handled some of its good ideas better. (Bus scene was a great idea, but handled poorly)

Then the action sequences took a child cartoon approach. (for obvious reasons) Which drastically hurt the last bit of the movie for me. (Ironically, most people enjoyed the ending, and hated the start. But then again, most super hero fans tend to like action, and I tend to find it boring, if nothing interesting is happening.)

The ending could have been a massive success, if they copied ONE thing from the marvel movies. (Sadly I can't say what it is, otherwise knowing it doesnt contain this, is a sort of spoiler.) But like the rest of the movie, the ending has a GREAT idea, and handled it poorly. (probably to save on money.)

RATING: 70% Above average, and mostly enjoyable.
Semi comparable to Thor3, humor wasnt as spot on as Thor3, but the actual plot was more interesting than Thor3.

The villain is really poor, the bad bad guy. The film doesn't have a very complex plot, the guy is thirsty for power and wants the ones that the protagonist has and uses the 7 deadly sins (which are mythological monsters) to try to get them. It touches very important issues about the true meaning of family and heroism. It reminds us of The Goonies, Stand By Me, The Greatest American Hero and Big. Wonder Woman is better but this one is better than Aquaman. Same light and cool tone since Justice League and this is the perfect path that DC found to compete against Marvel. The movie is very long, in the middle it becomes heavy and slow, 1 hour and 45 minutes would have been better. Expand

I haven'tAlright lads we are well overdue a good DC film, it's been too long, maybe some of you out there actually liked Batman v Superman or Justice League and all I can say to that is I don't understand it but whatever floats your boat. I haven't forgotten Wonder Woman, it had a lot going for it but I can't say it's a great film, it should have been but we can only hope that Wonder Woman 1984 will up the standard. Shazam on the other hand is a great, hilarious and heartfelt film that I never expected to be quite as good as it was. Who would have suspected a comedy would have brought DC out of its rut. No seriously, comedy isn't exactly DC's forte I mean the last time they tried too hard to be funny we got Suicide Squad and I think I speak for almost everyone here when I say we all wish we could erase that one from our memory. Well done DC for gifting us with a lighthearted superhero film that delivers on the action and the comedy.

Fourteen year old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) becomes every kids dream when he suddenly acquires a vast range of superpowers by simply shouting the word SHAZAM, turning him into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). Shazam is having a great time testing the limits of his new-found abilities with the help of his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) but quickly realises he'll need to figure out his true potential if he has any hope of fighting his arch nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). Pure fun, incredibly entertaining and very funny with more than a few laugh out loud moments. You can see the entire cast having a great time with this film, Levi's infectious and charismatic performance shines through and you can't help but enjoy yourself. Mark Strong may be typecast as a villain at this point and why shouldn't he be? He always plays a villain role to perfection. The chemistry is simply electric, DC normally chooses wisely with its casting and the same can be said for Shazam. It's a film suitable for all ages, you can just sit back and enjoy. Although a little on the long side, and would probably benefit from losing about ten minutes. If you need a Superhero fix before Endgame then Shazam should be your choice, highly recommended.

I saw this with my 14 yr old son today and it delivered exactly what the trailer promised, it has a great feel good factor and the excellent comedic sensibilities of the well chosen cast ensured we laughed numerous times throughout. Really the only problem I have with Shazam! is in its basic run-of-the-mill plot but then it is a well worn genre by now...

It wildly succeeds in what it sets out to do because it understands that there is nothing childish about childhood or children's entertainment. Irregardless of the invulnerability of its title character or the power fantasy inherent in the superhero genre, the film embraces a disarming vulnerability and emotional intelligence. The movie never forgets that while childhood is full of wonder, humor and escapism, it is also full of fear, loneliness, and struggle. Where other recent comic book movies are built behind a smug aura of "cool face," cheap sentimentality, or winking humor, Shazam! earns its attitude and big laughs by leaning in to the humanity, complex emotions, and social longing inherent in comic book mythology. The film is decidedly on a smaller scale that what we've come to expect in the genre, both in times of budget, star power, and 'end of the world' dramatics, but rather than diminishing the impact of the film, it heightens the very real and emotionally powerful stakes of family and friendship. The characters ultimately change from cynical and selfish to the hero you were hoping for in a way that didn't feel overly optimistic, and how I would expect a 14 year old with a traumatic past to handle a situation like this. I am excited to see this movie again. Expand

Big with super powers is almost perfect. I didn't so much care about the actual fight scenes, but instead the comedy and strong chemistry with the family. Overall a low 8 an A-.

The story centers around a young, 14 year old'Shazam!' is an easy movie to love, and that's because it is told through the eyes of young teenagers who aspire to be noble and powerful heroes, the spirit of this film is what keeps it alive. The story centers around a young, 14 year old boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is alone, and is searching for his mother ever since they were separated when he was just a young boy. He is then forced to bond with a new foster family after having a reputation for running away numerous times, but decides to finally settle in. His new family is big, many different siblings of various ages and personalities, the one he gets closest to is Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), who is a big fan of superheroes and collects all kinds of special merchandise, even right down to the bullet that Superman himself deflected. Billy struggles at first with his new family and school, but is still motivated to find his mother. We also meet Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who, when he was a child, he encountered the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) and was cast out as he could not resist evil, and was deemed not worthy to possess such great power. He manages to get himself back in and snatch the evil power, and the wizard must find someone truly worthy enough to defeat Sivana. That is where things get interesting for our young Billy, as he also comes across the mysterious temple and is told what he must do, when he says "Shazam!", he turns into a fully grown-up superhero (now played by Zachary Levi), but still has the mind of his own, young self. What really surprised me about this movie was how charming, heartwarming and funny it all is. Directed by David F. Sandberg ('Lights Out' and 'Annabelle: Creation'), the movie's tone is surprisingly light and much different than what he maybe used to. Despite maybe one or two moments when we constantly cut back and forth between Billy and Sivana, it can feel like two different movies, making it tonally uneven, but that's just a small percentage. The movie mainly works because of its youthful spirit. Teenagers always wanted to be a hero, and how Levi plays a 14 year old trapped in a 30 year old's body and his reaction to everything from super strength, to flying, really adds to the movie's joyful quality. The third act also, can get a little too cheesy at times, but maybe that's intentional, overall, this is pretty much 'Big' (1988) meets 'Superman' (1978), also, it does remind me of 'Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse' (2018) and that's a high compliment. It knows the concept is a little silly, it embraces its light spirit, and it has fun with the material, like how most kids have fun when they use some powerful piece of technology. Imagine if you were a kid, and you found out you could fly and have super strength. This movie is a joy to behold. Expand

Having read a bunch of Captain Marvel stories, it was exciting seeing how much stuff they managed to seamlessly fit into the film. The mostly lighthearted tone of the film was great, and they managed to land a fair amount of good jokes, so it was very enjoyable to watch. Though it had just over a two hour runtime, the pacing and entertainment I got out of it made it feel like barely an hour and a half had gone by.

In my eyes, it was both enjoyable as a faithful adaptation of a DC property as well as a film, which is a welcome change given some of the past entries in Warner Brother's expanded universe attempt. I really feel like Warner Brother's is starting to get it right now.

About the soundtrack. They used the nostalgia formula yet again. The big difference here is that they don't overuse it. Overall, good soundtrack.

About the CGI. Generally speaking, CGI effects were good but at some scenes of the movie you can tell that they use CGI.

At the end of the movie. Good final battle but I think they overdued to show the full potencial of character. Overall, a good movie.

This movie shows that superhero movies can tell more than just being a funny superhero movie but also a serious film as well, as long as they do it right. This leads into the character development that happens in this film, mainly with Billy. From the beginning to the end Billy doesn’t stay the same but he changes. Now, I have to talk about the acting of course and what else can I say other than its spectacular. Everybody in this film does their job at a hundred and ten percent. I want to mainly talk about Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer because they were the main ones you follow. First Zachary Levi was a perfect choice to play Shazam because he had fun with this role. He played it as if it was a real-life teenager who just got superpowers and doesn’t know what to do with them. He had great chemistry with Jack Dylan Grazer and they could easily bounce stuff off of each other easily. They both were hilarious too. Jack Dylan Grazer is going to have a promising career when he gets older. Talking about being funny, the movie all around is a hilarious ride. Whether it is poking fun at a superhero cliché or just a funny line the movie knew when to be funny and when to tone it down and be serious again. My only real problem with the film is the Villain Thaddeus Sivana, played by Mark Strong. Now, don’t get me wrong they do give him a decent reason for doing what he’s doing and he’s played well by Mark Strong it’s just he seems weak compared to everybody else in this film. In the end, this film is great other than the villain and is worth checking out. I give Shazam a 9.5/10. Expand

Probably people who are just knowing them now will find them more attractive but the formula remains the same and is really, really stucked.

I couldn't help feeling an enormous reminiscence in this film from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even the ending credits sequence with a song from The Ramones.

Shazam doesn't offer any surprises. It's basically Big with superheroes. Even the film recognizes it in a small scene.
This film definitely makes it clear that Warner is pointing more towards the Marvel style which is neither good nor bad but neither better.
It's entertaining within the basics. It adds a new, more humorous character to DC's film universe but the film itself has no memorable elements at all.

I loved the surprising back seat that Shazam took to focus on the family and the villain. The dynamics of the foster family was incredible, and hit home for me and the rest of the audience. These characters are grounded in reality and provide an accurate representation of a family. The villain's family dynamics were also fantastic, leading a a massively underrated and scary villain with opposing family dynamics to Billy Batson. It was incredible to see these characters demonstrate morals and feeling based on their situation. It is the most real family representation in a movie to date.

Beyond this, the super hero dynamics and action was also incredible, with fun and fantastic fight scenes and great motives. This makes Shazam stand out in a crowd of monotonous super hero films in our generation.

Shazam is funny, too. The jokes landed and never felt forced. The jokes were derived from the characters and how they would converse and react. These characters felt so real, and the jokes felt like they came from the characters rather than a focus on jokes first.

Shazam's writing is impeccable. It creates such a beautiful world with characters that feel real and situations that fit the characters. The characters and scenes had beautiful continuity, making everything feel real despite the movies focus on magic wizards.

He can switch between characters with the uttering of the movie's title. In addition to the usual tropes and tangles, this film gets most of its comic energy from the teen angle: the 2 best friends are nerds and trying to figure out how to use these recently-acquired powers (and his grown-up body). Although it's not especially funny and the action sequences aren't original, the spunky energy and lively characters make it an enjoyable entry to the genre, especially for family audiences. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I still think that Man of Steel and even BvS are overall better movies, Shazam is still a very strong entry in the DCEU and one of the best superhero movies in years. And that's because it's not exactly a superhero movie but more of a 80's kids movie starring a superhero. With all the cheesiness, heartfelt moments and a few dark ones as well.

The trailers really made the film seem like a dumb comedy, but even though it's mostly lighthearted fun, I was surprised to see that it has a lot of dramatic moments and even some pretty dark ones that makes me wonder how they got away with it in a kids movie. After all, not many family friendly superhero films have as villains demons that embody the seven deadly sins and bite peoples heads off. But the best quality of Shazam is how it knows when to do comedy, drama and action without breaking the tone. So there are no serious dramatic moments ruined by crappy jokes 30 seconds later. The characters are good, the acting is decent enough and the villain is one of the best we've gotten in recent years.

Unfortunatelly, there are issues that stop this film from being great, mainly the writting. First, it's the protagonist. He's a pretty fun character and well acted by both the adult and the kid, but he is pretty inconsistently portrayed. He actually seems more mature as a teenager than he is in the adult form. And then there are the rest of the kids. The movie doesn't spend a long time developing their relationship with the protagnist, Billy, so when the time comes for him to finally accept that they are his new family it seems pretty forced as he barely interacts with most of them. Also, the moment when they all turn ino Power Rangers at the end is corny as hell. The movie should have spent more on these characters and Billy instead of the overdrawn action climax at the end.

But despite all its problems, Shazam is so far the most entertaining movie of the year. DC seems to be on a roll latelly and who knows, maybe if they keep putting up good movies with no SJW crap in them they might take Marvel's place after Endgame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, let’s clarify something here for the younger generation... Shazam existed well before the power rangers and the Marvel family goes back as far as the 1940s, so any copying was on the part of the power rangers. Now on to the review!

This was kind of like Big, if the boy in Big wished he were a super hero. It is genuinely a very entertaining movie for the whole family and it plays out well enough that I would like to see another one.

If you’ve read any of the reviews, you know that Billy Batson is an orphan that is chosen to wield the powers of Shazam, while his nemesis is chosen to be the champion of the 7 deadly sins (a host for demons). Although Billy has some growing pains as he learns to deal with the powers that he’s recently been granted and his lack of maturity doesn’t help. The movie plays out in a predictable way, that is actually comforting, because you would expect nothing less than a bit of immature antics from a teenage boy that’s suddenly thrust into an adult super heroes body.

Overall, it wasn’t too long and it had some surprises that had people in the audience screaming excitedly. If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend going and taking the family if you have one... Just ignore the 0 and 2 star reviews, because it’s clear they haven’t actually watched the movie.

Oh boy(!),the things you can do with an almost $100 Million budget…

It’s hard to know what Warner Bros. and DC are trying to do as of now… Yeah, they’re trying to be bright and colorful after a grimy start (even if that means both Batman V Superman’s Ultimate Cut and Wonder Woman had that tone and were still 24k Gold),but yeah. I can assure you they did it. They finally made a good movie that isn’t a CG Fest or one Production Hell of a movie that tries hardcore to ride the Slappy Go-Lucky Marvel tone.
“Shazam!” is fantastic and joyous and energetic and yes,it’s the Superhero version of Big. That mixed with Superman The Movie. If anything,I’ll remember it for the child actors. Hell yeah, these boys and girls are some of the best child actors I’ve ever seen on film (alongside Us and The Last Crusade). It’s such a breath of fresh air, considering the movie I saw last week has some of the more annoying child actors. Zachary Levi is having a lot of fun as Shazam and you can tell he cares about the role.
The story also gives a subplot for Billy Batson (Asher Angel),which is so rare in this kind of movie (again, even for a movie with child actors as main leads) while it’s this big story about Learning to be a hero. Unlike the other Origin Stories,it’s probably going to be my main go-to when I’ll make some Action Comics (just like how Marvel watches Superman The Movie for inspo). Unlike Captain Marvel,no limitations with the Screenplay and they have so many liberties with it,which makes me think Warner was like “Ehh,no one knows this superhero, let’s just let the writers screw around with whatever contraption they have…”. But also, nothing great about VFX work. It’s just there.
The score by Benjamin Wallfisch (Blade Runner 2049,IT and the upcoming HellBoy) is so 80’s or 90’s,you can’t help it,but compare it to Superman The Movie. I’m not saying it as a bad thing, but more of it as a compliment. The joyous and adventurous bits that swell throughout the movie...
Surprisingly enough, the movie manages to get brutal. Human Decapitation happens in here, and it’s half-great and half-expected,coming from the same director of Annabelle Creation.
That mostly happens with the villain, which is also the weaker part of the movie. Sure,he has powers and acts as a villain (and some spoilery stuff I won’t talk in here),but it’s mostly a Villain that is there for the sake of the movie, and also to mirror most of the Hero’s powers.
And some moments happen for Plot Convenience (which I really despise). But then again, you’re in the theater to have fun,and that’s what matters coming from “Shazam!”:A not so serious (literally) Superhero Movie that has some genuine heart put into it. There’s a cameo in this movie that will blow minds for sure (just like the last Superhero Movie I saw). What more do you want from that?

With movies like Aquaman and Shazam DC are starting to find their footing and I look forward to more from the .

In short the story of Shazam is about this boy with a pure heart gets powers from a wizard, now the movieis not too different from this premise but there is a little twist to it without spoiling much the pure heart thing goes a different direction and I liked that. Billy Batson played by Asher Angel did a good job, the dude is a good actor and him Jack Grazer who played Freddy Freeman, Billy's friend and adopted brother and Zachary Levy carried tnis movie. All of them had charm, wit and had very good emotional scenes when needed. Zachery Levy was good as Shazam you actually believed he was a child in a mans body , he also looked cool, goofy, funny and charismatic in the role so that's a big up.

The side characters like Billy's adopted brothers and sisters were okay until the last act when something really cool happened I didn't suspect with all those characters and DC nalied it perfectly. The action to be honest was subpar and there weren't any memorable action sequences maybe some flashy moments when Shazam used his powers but the action was forgettable not necessarily bad but nothing spectacular. The tone and pacing of the movie was done really good, the overall tone of the movie was light-hearted and fun but emotional and serious when needed to be and you can't ask more than that. The first half took time to flesh out the characters and to have fun,be silly and didn't take itself seriously especially Shazam and Freddy. The move really nailed the concept of "what would a kid do if he had superpowers" and the movie portrayed that point nicely. Although the second half was really slow and the action was underwhelming, the story was great, suprising and slightly unpredictable along with its convincing character development.

Like a said the movie had a lot of heart as you cared for the characters and they motivations, even the villain Doctor Sivana and the story arcs get resolved pretty satisfyingly. Now the villain Doctor Sivana played by Mark Strong had a pretty good story and the beginning of the movie and had a pretty compelling reason to beba villain he just turned out be be meh and generic by the end, Mark Strong was awesome but the character wasn't developed any further.

The movie didn't have anything that was majorly bad but the pacing during the second half of the movie was rather slow and the action overall was underwhelming. Also the CGI was really good throughout the movie until the had to put some CGI on a certain character's muscles with was kinda bad but not completely terrible. The humor was also well timed and funny and not forced unlike some Marvel movies(sorry I just had to say it).

I really enjoyed Shazam it was a very good movie, with a great story, funny comedy and the most interesting thing you can take away is it had heart, not the action or comedy but this DC movie had a lot of heart and I hope more DC movies continue on with this trend.

Formerly known by his original name, Captain Marvel before he was officially renamed in 2011, Shazam is making his return to the big screen since 1941 in his solo movie as the seventh instalment in DC Extended Universe after many years of development hell that originated since the 2000s.

Billy Batson (Angel) is a fourteen years old teenager and an orphan who has ran away from many orphanages in six counties to search for his biological mother until he was arrested by the police. He is later place under the care of Victor and Rosa Vazquez, whom they also took in five other foster children in their house.

One of the foster children, Freddy Freeman, befriends Billy and shares his love for superheroes with him. At Sivana Industries, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong) found a way to return to the Rock of Eternity where he first met Shazam the Wizard when he was a child. Feeling angry that he was rejected by the wizard in the past, he steals the Eye of Sin and takes control of The Seven Deadly Sins.

At school, Billy beats up the bullies to save Freddy. When he manages to escape from them by boarding the train in the subway, he is transported to the Rock of Eternity where he meets the wizard. He chooses Billy to be his champion by telling him to say his name so that he can pass on his power to him. Billy calls out his name and he transform into an adult superhero called Shazam (Levi). After the wizard died, Billy seeks Freddy’s help to explore his newfound powers. All is fun and games for both of them until Billy comes face-to-face with Dr. Sivana, who wants his power.

Looks like DC hits another home run for this franchise. This movie is quite awesome next to Wonder Woman and Aquaman. It is also one of the best movies in this franchise and much better than Marvel’s Captain Marvel. I am very impressed with David F. Sandberg’s direction for this movie. Although he had two horror movies in his résumé, he manages to pull off a light-hearted and very fun superhero film. I had doubts at first but he proved me wrong.

The plot of the movie is nothing too cliché and it is full of comedy which I really enjoyed and laughed so many times. Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer gave their best performances and they are one of the best parts of the movie. Mark Strong also gave his best performance as a supervillain since 2011’s Green Lantern which he portrayed Sinestro. I can say that his role in this movie earned himself redemption from that critically flop movie.

What makes the movie even more fun besides comedy is it has many Easter Eggs and references to the past instalments including a special cameo which I will not spoil it here. You can certainly enjoy spotting them while watching. The central theme of the movie, family, is very well executed and it is very relatable and connected to many people especially to those who are or were orphans in their life. For a low budget superhero movie, the CGIs were very impressively made and not looking too fake.

Let’s hope that DC and Warner Bros. keep up with the momentum and continue with this trend for all upcoming instalments. I will continue to look forward for the next instalments in this franchise. Before you leave the cinema, there is a mid-credits scene and a post credits scene you would not want to miss them.

Shazam is so close to delivering a home run and one of the best superhero films in years, and it's a very hard film to quibble with. Shazam is smart and sincere and dorky and fun in all the right ways. You root for Shazam / Billy Batson throughout the film, and you also get a great villain to boot. Asher Angel is the perfect Billy Batson. Shazam rightly pulls back on the grandeur and delivers a fresh, sharp, and down-right wonderful piece of popcorn cinema. Fresh, fun and magical. What might have been an average movie with the wrong lead turns out to be an excellent vehicle for Angel's budding talent and Strong's experienced charm. Not only is it a fun ride as a superhero romp, but the bubbly pace will also warrant multiple viewings. This is finally a fresh take on a classic hero. And Finally, the Shazam movie we've all been waiting for is here. And it delivers. Expand

Truly the sweetest and most wholesome adaptation in the DCEU catalogue to date, "Shazam!" soars high on the absolutely winsome and hilarious lead performance from Zachary Levi, and an ultimately fresh concept in play. Not only does the "Big-esque" angle lend for a number of almost endlessly entertaining comedic bits, but the whole interpretation of family at the film's center ends up feeding into an emotional core that surprised me more than anything else. Above being an absolute laugh riot, a thoroughly engrossing origin story, and a performance showcase on the part of Zachary Levi, "Shazam!" is also a movie that cares about what it's trying to say. And that means a lot. Expand

The story is good (it's more than a generic story with superheroes). It develops the characters pretty decent and the acting is good (Zachary Levi is very good in this role).
The villain is ok (the powers and who gave it, to me, it seemed interesting), the CGI is ok (the flying scenes could have been better). The humor is also pretty good. I had a blast watching this movie! Stay up to the first end-credit scene, it will be worth it.

Shazam delivers a really funny and at times action-packed movie although a few parts could be improved upon.

Zachary Levi is great as as Shazam, the superhero adult form of 14-yer old Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel). He really makes the movie, both bringing on the humor and managing to portray a young teenager. Jack Dylan Grazer, playing Billy's wiseguy foster brother Freddy Freeman, works so well off him. Heck, the entire foster family is played well. Each of the children is well acted with distinct, likable personalities. However, I was a little surprised that Mary (played by Grace Fulton), who along with Freddy is one of the biggest and longest-running characters of the Shazam (once known as Captain Marvel before legal issues) roster wasn't given more to do.

The movie is really funny, maybe not quite on the same pedestal as Daredevil, but not that far off either. I was worried that this movie was trying to be a superhero comedy but was shot in a down-to-Earth manner that does not try to make Philadelphia try to feel like a movie city at all. (The school Billy goes to looks like a real outdated school that was built back in the 70s/80s.) However, the humor and action blends in surprisingly well with the setting.

Shazam fans will be pleased to see several Easter Eggs to the 40's golden age that you wouldn't expect them to be able to pull off. Be SURE to stay through the mid-credits. There is also an after credits scene, but it isn't as essential. It's just a funny throwaway bit like the endings to Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, although this one is funnier.

As much as I liked this film, there were moments that could have been improved upon. The second act does run a bit long. Too much time is spent on Freddy and Billy having shenanigans with Shazam's powers. The time could've been spent developing the villain and some of the foster kids more; the former in particular. This is not to say that Mark Strong's Dr. Thaddeus Sivana was a bad villain. He isn't paper thin like Thor: The Dark World's Malekith. The antagonist's motivations are set up well, and Strong does a good job, being particularly threatening in the final confrontation. However, the character still could've been fleshed out a little more and have more personality. (We never even learn what he is a doctor of).

There are a couple of bullies at BIlly's school that are way too broadly written. There are some creature effects , while designed well, suffer from being another Hollywood creation that is drably colored grey.

The movie tries to be too many things and two elements really took me out of it. Billy has a serious subplot, his quest for his mother, and although I applaud the writers for giving the character an emotional backstory and trying to be more than just a comedy, it always felt like I was watching a different film.

The other element was a couple of scary deaths that never jive with the feel of the rest of the film, especially considering its supposed to be a family picture. Director Larry F. Sandberg stated that he was trying to capture the scary moments from the films he saw as a kid, but I felt he crossed the fine line between fun scary and sadistic. Listen, I'm not saying all family films should be sugar-coated and children's ability to handle things underestimated. In fact there are some darker moments in the final confrontation with Sivana, including one scene where Billy is in real trouble, that are effective. A lot of us have scary parts they remember fondly as kids (like the Large Marge scene in the Pee-Wee movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or Return to Oz). But a lot of those kept the scares quick and to the point. Too much time is spent lingering on the victims being in pain and fear. It feels like torture. (Parents may worry more about their children becoming desensitized than being scared.) It contrasts too much with the joke elements. It's a lot like that creepy scene in Superman 3 where the woman is slowly transformed into a robot. I never hear of anyone who as a kid who wasn't just scared-scared and not fondly scared of that scene. The reason I'm guessing is because it was so atonal compared to the rest of the film, drawn out, arbitrary, awkward, uncomfortable, and came out of the blue that it never quite landed with children. Same with the deaths here.

The out-of-film moments are in the first two acts. Everything is ironed out by the third. It is so good and surprising that it may be one of my favorite superhero movie finales.

I recommend this. I'll definitely own it. When this movie is great, it's great. Just expect some dips here and there.

Jack Dylan Grazer is the best part of the whole movie and Zachary Levi is great And has amazing chemistry with Jack Dylan Grazer. Mark Strong as Doctor Savanna is a pretty well done villain. I like that they flesh him out a bit.

One of the things I like is that this movie can get really dark at times. There is one scene that genuinely shocked me with how dark it was. I wouldn’t say don’t take your kids to see Shazam but expect some pretty hardcore moments. Also, there are a few jokes that are obviously meant only for adults, but kids my age would know what they mean.

One complaint I have about the film is how different Billy acts when he is Shazam. One moment he’s sort of a mean dude and the next he’s cracking jokes and flossing! That’s why Shazam himself is one of the weaker parts of the film.

As for the jokes? There amazing! Almost every single one landed and there are so many more I missed that I’ll have to rewatch to to catch. There are a lot of jokes but the movie never gets overly jokey.

So, how does Shazam compare to the rest to DCEU? He can fit in a team up movie and in the universe as a whole and so far is my favorite character of them all!

Verdict:
Shazam! Is a funny blast! It is my favorite DCEU film and so far my favorite 2019 movie! I highly recommend it.

If this was the potential of DCEU, why on earth movies like Justice League, BvS and Suicide Squad even exist? The more I watch films like this, the more I think Snyder was the biggest mistake of DCEU. .
.
Good : Zachary Levi is awesome as the adult version of Billy Batson. He can perfectly play an adult who is actually a teenager. His performance is incredible. He has an amazing chemistry with all the other characters which made the experience really good. The movie is an ultimate fun ride from the top to bottom. There's not a single part which felt boring or uninteresting. The arc given to Billy was quite good and we start to like the characters. The comedic parts deliver at its finest. Director Sandberg has shown versatility in a very good way. I have always thought of him as a very good director. His horror films like Lights Out and Annabelle Creation are directed quite well, the major flaws are in the script, if any. Here, there are no such problems with the script, and he understands very well how a certain part of the story is to be directed. Some parts do have a nice horror movie vibe to it, but it is not tonally inconsistent. It knows what it tries to be, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Even at the times it does, it is for a comedic purpose. It never tries to be an epic film knowing that it's not, unlike BvS. It is sure to put a smile on your face throughout and make you laugh a lot. The final moments are crowd pleasing moments done right. .
.
Mixed : It's not a big problem, but I expected more comedy out of this. What I got was great, but I wanted a lot more of funny stuff. The kid playing teen Billy Batson isn't a bad actor. But some of the times, it felt like him and Levi were a little different with each other. It could've been a little better. .
.
Bad : The villain was a clichéd villain. He wasn't interesting as a character like Thanos, Ledger's Joker or Bane. Mark Strong does a good job, but this is a poorly written villain. .
.
Conclusion : An entertaining superhero film which knows what it is, and is quite campy in a good way. It is not wildly original concept of a film. It has some popular tropes of the genre and has a familiar template for an origin story. But it will definitely keep you entertained till the end, and you will end up liking most of the characters. The best thing is, even if you have never seen a DCEU movie, it won't make a difference. It has little to no reference to the previous DCEU films and is its own thing for the most part. Recommended even to those who are not the fan of the genre. .
