Back in 2010 Kick-Ass answered the question of what would happen if a regular dude tried to be a superhero. This movie shows us how things would turn out if superpowers were given to a kid. What do they have in common? Mark Strong.

This is easily the most family-friendly superhero flick across any of the cinematic universes. You get a heartwarming tale about a young boy finding a family with the action and humor on average being more wholesome than the typical film of this ilk. It follows the Marvel formula by making comedy a big part of the experience, but I'd argue it does so in a more natural manner than the MCU. It rarely feels like it's forcing the jokes into each scene. Rather the laughters occurs naturally thanks to David Sandberg portraying the kids as just being kids, albeit in a highly unique situation.

I really like how this serves solely as an introduction to the character(s) as it allows the film to stay very tight and focused on the story at hand without getting too bogged down in years of history from the comics. That being said I am left excited by the brief glimpses we were given into all the potential expansion this hero can bring to the DCEU and look forward to seeing his lore explored in sequels. I absolutely love the cast. Zachary Levi is great at capturing that boy trapped in a man's body energy, Jack Dylan Grazer is a gem, Faithe Herman might be the cutest kid alive right now, and Strong makes for a memorable antagonist. His Dr. Sivana might not be any more fleshed out than any other supervillain to grace the bigscreen over the past few years, but he certainly is menacing. Personally, I think he rivals Thanos in terms of fear factor. Shazam! in now way breaks from the superhero movie mold. If anything it's the DC movie that most closely follows the formula established by Marvel's success. Yet, the fact that this character is a fresh face that brings his own unique and exciting possibilities is enough for it to overcome that. It also doesn't hurt that it's so warmhearted and high-spirited.

After participating in an act of selfless kindness, teenager Billy Bates (Asher Angel), is whisked away to another place. In this strange place, he meets a man claiming to be a high priest, who guards very special powers that can defeat all the evil in the world, powers he must relinquish. To receive these powers, all Billy has to do is say the mans name, Shazam, and just like that, Billy is a superhero. As expected, the young cast members Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Glazer had terrific chemistry and were the source of the majority of the funny moments that took place. Zachary Levi is also very good, but as DC tends to do, they gave away this entire film in the previews. Everything that looked funny, interesting, or unique about Shazam, is right in the preview. As for the rest of the film, the story is okay at best, with plenty of parts that were completely unnecessary, leading to a film that was over two hours long. Shazam was in fact about forty-five minutes longer than it needed to be, and not only was that obvious, but the filmmakers seem to know this as well, filling in a lot of scenes with boring **** that took a lot away from something with real potential. The film goes around in circle for a while, before we get to the ending and as is common for DC, the ending is a disaster. I would have to spoil too much of the film to explain to you exactly why that is, but if I'm to be honest, the ending really killed the whole film for me. I enjoyed the humor, I liked the fact that were some elements not often seen in the superhero genre, and I liked the interactions between young cast members. What I didn't appreciate was how the plot is constantly re-capped for us and I hated seeing similar scenes multiple times, especially when they don't move the story forward. I would say I'd recommend this film more towards children than adults, but the truth is, the kids in the theater with me were all restless around the ninety minute mark. The bottom line, Shazam! isn't a stinker and it drew enough interest in theaters to probably get a sequel, but in my opinion once again DC dropped the ball on a great idea and spoiled the whole thing in the trailer. Yeah I was way more entertained by this movie than I had any business being. DC is actually standing on its own legs for the first time since they started chasing Marvel.

It delivers as a comedy, and for once it actually feels like somebody stopped and tried to make something unique out of the subject matter. Also, I would like to congratulate DC on their first interesting villain since Zod. I normally understand that everybody has their tastes, but I'm genuinely puzzled to see that some people were disappointed with this movie. Indifferent, maybe... but to actually dislike it is weird to me.

The bus scene was a bit much though.

A fun movie that really taps into the inner child of anyone who grew up wishing they were granted superpowers, and could rise above what cards life had given them.
The humor is good, the journey is meaningful, with a strong emphasis on family, and the villain - although not phenomenal - is portrayed well enough on screen that I did not want him gone at the end.
The strongest emphasis is on the comedy, though, and if you're interested in a hero's journey that's fun and wholesome, Shazam delivers.

While I still think that Man of Steel and even BvS are overall better movies, Shazam is still a very strong entry in the DCEU and one of the best superhero movies in years. And that's because it's not exactly a superhero movie but more of a 80's kids movie starring a superhero. With all the cheesiness, heartfelt moments and a few dark ones as well.

The trailers really made the film seem like a dumb comedy, but even though it's mostly lighthearted fun, I was surprised to see that it has a lot of dramatic moments and even some pretty dark ones that makes me wonder how they got away with it in a kids movie. After all, not many family friendly superhero films have as villains demons that embody the seven deadly sins and bite peoples heads off. But the best quality of Shazam is how it knows when to do comedy, drama and action without breaking the tone. So there are no serious dramatic moments ruined by crappy jokes 30 seconds later. The characters are good, the acting is decent enough and the villain is one of the best we've gotten in recent years.

Unfortunatelly, there are issues that stop this film from being great, mainly the writting. First, it's the protagonist. He's a pretty fun character and well acted by both the adult and the kid, but he is pretty inconsistently portrayed. He actually seems more mature as a teenager than he is in the adult form. And then there are the rest of the kids. The movie doesn't spend a long time developing their relationship with the protagnist, Billy, so when the time comes for him to finally accept that they are his new family it seems pretty forced as he barely interacts with most of them. Also, the moment when they all turn ino Power Rangers at the end is corny as hell. The movie should have spent more on these characters and Billy instead of the overdrawn action climax at the end.

But despite all its problems, Shazam is so far the most entertaining movie of the year. DC seems to be on a roll latelly and who knows, maybe if they keep putting up good movies with no SJW crap in them they might take Marvel's place after Endgame.

The acting from the whole cast was stupendous especially Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, Faithe Herman, Mark Strong, Cooper Andrews, Grace Fulton, and Meagan Good. The visual effects were terrific and really cool especially The Seven Deadly Sins and Shazam's powers. David F. Sandberg's direction was great. The costumes and outfits were fantastic especially Zachary Levi's SHAZAM costume. The hair and makeup was really good. The soundtrack and the music featured throughout the movie was great. Also I really loved the mid-credits scene where they introduced Mister Mind and the after the credits scene was hilarious. SHAZAM was a lot of fun to watch and it was extremely funny. SHAZAM is one of my favorite movies of 2019, my 2nd favorite DC movie of all time, and one of my favorite superhero movies of all time. SHAZAM is for sure a A+ movie for me. Expand

Shazam! is a great superhero film, with good action and humor. but when you look under the surface, it only gets better, with a ton of subtext and depth to the story that really makes the world come to life. Billy's story is fun, and relatable, a great adaptation to the modern day while at the same time staying true to it's classic roots. must see.

Recite The Passage.

Shazam!

Sandberg has a huge Christmas-calibered gift coming up at the front of his door. DC striking off its streak of fumbles, may still not yet be at its best self, but is fun enough to heat some more popcorns in the box office. This surprise Summer package takes itself seriously in order to not be taken itself seriously. And this Deadpool version of DC will and does get a wider range for its polished PG-13 lexicon and people pleasing concept that basically hovers around the pop culture references i.e. from earning through social media to heating vein popping debate about comic books.

While on the other hand the themes like foster homes and parenting and responsibilities are carried out, the director, David F. Sandberg who is sticking his neck out in here on weaving a tale of a genre that he has never been part of, is the most delightful package among all the powers the film has got. Probably, because no matter how sketchy things go in the storytelling, Sandberg keeps the film to the ground. He doesn't milk out laughs or emotional scenes with an extra effort, it just comes easy to him.

Another major notable work is how he grasps an authentic reaction before jumping in on to other scene, like when Mark Strong- the baddie- ambushes his father's business meeting and creates a havoc in the room, the energy of that room is set practically which makers often forget to do so in a film where activities like flying is normalized to running. If the first act is introductory and the second just mocks around here and there, the third and the biggest act of all is the best. With a long action sequence, that isn't just a feat of CGI colors but is also a part of gripping narrative.

From characters confronting their past to revelations of each other's powers and weakness and from teaming up against the baddie to a well orchestrated battle, this more than half hour of climax amplifies the film to its peak. Zachary Levi as the sort of dream version in a red sparkly skin tight suit is just as bling as his costume is, of course, in a good way. His shaking comic body language and stuttering before uttering one-liners is just as magnanimous as his inflated arm muscles.

On the other side of the door lies Mark Strong as brooding and growling for his character that gets an equal and powerful arc to walk on or fly, feel free. But these actors that relies upon CGI to pack a punch and are- let's be frank- on most of the posters would never be able to create the jarring impact if not for their brilliant younger supporting cast. Each of the family members are whispering their drama lightly and arguing loudly to draw in the laughs, this diverse family is something we can all connect to. Shazam! is actually the magic word that makes DC and their fans sore, look up high, the expectation has grown.

Even at average this is Still miles better than BvS or Man of Steel, although MOS generally gets a little leeway from me as well as most people for being an entry point in to the DCEU.

The Good
The cast was really great when it came to acting. The Child actors did not grind my gears too much, so I know they were really good. Shazam as a hero was OK aside from a few gripes I will get to later. The darker undertones to Billy's story was complex and yet it I appreciated to see them not going full silly or full depressive and the movie's writing struck a good balance between being funny, dark and heartfelt.
Mark Strong was a high point for me as an actor, since he seemed to be having the most fun getting into the skin of a obsessed whacko besides the fact that the villain was written bland and he did the best he was given.

The Seven Deadly Sins had some very interesting designs, very Lovecraft inspired; though the camera seemed to shy away from them which kind of confused me. Coming to the VFX it was pretty good for most of the scenes one or two things would look a little wierd but there was a lot more good than wierd bad.

The Bad
DCEU still seems to be having a hard time getting their heroes in a satisfying ' Hero helps the civilian's Scene' aside from Wonder Woman who nailed that, this is the only area I felt this movie was lacking.

And Since This IS a super hero movie it was quite the issue for me as I was starving for some proper hero action from Shazam through out my watch. I do get he is a kid and living a tough and hard life as we see, but any normal kid through similar experiences will have an itch to be helpful at some point if he becomes a superhero. We needed to see such scenes before the third act where Billy actively tries to do the superhero thing, instead of dumping it all in the end.
This does not mean the fun and child like humor that we see Billy/Shazam experiencing should be cut out or replaced, rather it needed a balance so the main lead does not come off unlikeable... But it drags on with two instances of heroic acts one event he himself stupidly creates and of course for the climax. Small meaningful heroics or maybe heroic acts gone wrong or some combination of both were needed since we already establish early on that Batman & Superman are a thing in this movie.
The 7 sins were a big missed opportunity since giving no individual character to them felt like a conscious decision, but I refuse to believe a writer would not jump at the opportunity to have their own spin on The Seven Great Evils. Especially even with a good and fun performance Strong's Character as the Main Villain was pretty bland and one note.

I want the sequel to get the hero action right this time around, we have a plethora of new heroes and the origin story out of the way. I am starving for more DC movies along this line but in the sequel we can hopefully see a better written story.

The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, like the other films such as Batman V Superman, and instead, is a light hearted and fun adventure. Zachary Levi perfectly captures the aspect of a 15 year old who turns into an adult, and Mark Strong gives a great performance of a man who envies a teenager who is everything he couldn't become. As always, let’s get the negatives out of the way. The visual effects were mediocre in the beginning and progressively got worse until the end. Only 1 of the child actors didn’t do a good job. 50% of the jokes either had no impact or were not funny to me. The first half of the film’s tone was really inconsistent. Other than that, this movie is amazing. Zachary Levi did an amazing job as Shazam and was the best part of the film. All the other actors did a great job and the villain was interesting and unique. We do get to see the villain’s backstory as the first part of the film which is different and unique for a Superhero film. The cinematography was good and the 2nd half of the film’s tone remained consistent. The plot was really solid and the other 50% of the jokes got a smile or a laugh out of me. The film does use some pop culture songs effectively, unlike Suicide Squad and they fit well into the narrative. I highly recommend seeing this film. Overall, Shazam! Provides an easy going, mostly funny superhero experience with a great cast, a great villain, and a great story. I give Shazam! an 8/10. Expand

After rewatching this movie, I understood just what I was about to miss out on. I wasn't planning to watch "Shazam!" in theaters, but overwhelmingly positive reviews convinced me to give it a go. Initially, I thought it was decent.

After rewatch, I find this movie pretty great. It's charming, funny and well-acted for the most part. Every time Zachary Levi was onscreen, it was simply a delightful experience. The goofiness of this movie is partly what makes it a cut above all other mediocre DC outings which, in retrospect, just seem like depressing soap operas.

7/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Easily one of the better DCEU films, but DC still needs to find a cohesive voice when telling a film and has a long way to go. My friend and I both agreed that at times, it was like watching two different films. The film opens with kid Sivana in the back seat of the car driving through the snow, car crashes and we meet the old Wizard. Sivana fails the wizards test and BOOM, that's the villains origin story. He wanted to be a wizard but he couldn't ... as far as origin stories and villains go, Sivana had no nuance, no appeal he was just angry-bad-man-4072. He sucked. The scenes he dominated were dark and serious and his character was really flat, he was so obviously just there to be a villain, it would have done his character justice to show some empathy or give him some redeeming quality or a goal (literally ANY goal, once he got those forgettable-shadow-demon things that were based on the 7-deadly sins, he had no endgame. He was just as bland and forgettable as the 7 CGI monsters that were supposed to look unique but all looked exactly the same). HOWEVER, the one redeeming quality of this movie was its heroes. Billy and Freddy were absolutely spectacular characters. The tone of the film does a total 180 when we get to Billy and Freddy, the colour tone shifts and the mood elevates, this is what I mean when I say it was like watching two different movies. Billy and Freddy had the better story, Sivana was uncooked and uninspired. Billy has a chip on his shoulder and he isn't the nicest character when we first get to know him, but he's genuine and he has motivations we can sympathise with, he feels real. The more we see of him, the more his rough exterior makes sense and when he bonds with Freddy a beautiful relationship between these two brothers is born. They out the best and worst in eachother as Billy embraces the perks of being a superhero and starts to leave Freddy behind. He finally realises being a superhero isn't much fun when you can't share it with your best friend and brother, it is BILLY, rather than his superhero persona SHAZAM that is the main appeal of this film. The superhero elements were so-so, largely due to the underwhelming final fight scene and the snore-inducing villain. All in all, it's a good film with some pretty funny beats, a fantastic film about brotherly love and male-friendships but DC still don't know how to tell an entirely cohesive story and undercooks the main villain to the point where he's just served raw and my immediate thoughts were "What's the point in Sivana anyway?" Go for an unusual coming of age story, but not if you want to see a good battle of hero v villain. Expand

Having been a huge comic book fan as a child - I want to watch all of these super hero movies! After watching it, all I can say is that there is just once scene after the next of poor acting, complete lack of character development on all fronts that led me down a path of actually becoming more and more annoyed. In one scene, Shazam catches a bus full of people by the front windows...and everyone in the bus had just fallen about 4 stories - yet nobody was hurt. The drop and sudden "catch" of an event like that would have jarred everyone with impact...and can somebody tell me how the glass would be able to hold all of that weight?

Let's just put it this way, this movie wasn't meant for adults, or anybody who actually like Shazam! in the comic books.

All of the child actors were much better than I’m used to seeing and the two lead boys provided plenty of great comedy together. Shazam is huge upgrade from previous DC movies, with its emotional story packed with amazing light-hearted humor and funny jokes. It’s very clear that David F. Sandberg knew what he was doing, when he directed a movie full of heart by giving his audience a tale about friends, family, and struggling to adapt in this world, leaving us much more sympathetic and caring with all the foster family members and especially Billy. The foster family aspect in the film is its heart and soul, all the touching scenes rely on that plot which actually is the strongest suit of the movie. We must say that this movie is super funny, it’s more of a comedy than we expected it to be, but still very balanced in tone and never forgets its main emotional core.
All the cast worked pretty well in the movie and especially Zachary Levi, he really embodied the “Shazam” character and totally acts as kid who’s had a tough life and since he’s gotten his powers he can now do something valuable with them. As for Jackdy Langrazer he delivers an excellent performance, he’s the hilarious one who highlights the comedy factor and his character never gets annoying in anyway. The chemistry between the 2 actors along with Asher Angel is what makes the humor really work, Asher Angel delivered a fair performance as Billy and so did Mark Strong as Dr. Sivana. But what I thought didn’t work prominently in the movie is its villain, too much was going on in the family story line which diverted the focus a bit, his story was very rushed and could’ve worked better if it got more screen time and development, and his main inspiration as bad guy in this movie didn’t really work for us. Plus, we never view him as a real threat to Billy and the story makes that clear in the beginning of the film.
If you’re a Comic book fan, this movie will definitely be a different experience for you, there’s a lot of easter eggs to look for and references to notice. Make sure to keep an eye out for its last scene because, well..it’s pretty damn awesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite my dizzyingly low expectations and complete ignorance about the headline hero, Shazam! is the first truly joyful DC film I’ve seen in a long time. (I hesitate to say “comic book film” because of the recent experiment with the multiverse by Marvel.) I was advised through a teenage friend of Friend that we would be bored by the first twenty minutes of the film and then it would pick up, and I found that not to be the case. There are a lot of clever bends in those opening scenes: fun with the soundtrack, Djimon Hounsou as a big ol’ wizard, and Mark Strong refusing to age a day past thirty and struggling to wrap his mouth around an American accent.

The turn was unexpected for someone who has not familiarized themselves with the comics (Friend confirmed this for me last night after the show, too), which I think means that the direction did not feel the need to treat the audience like it was stupid, yet it doesn’t feel unearned or disorienting like so many dei ex machina. Vague spoilers: the nature of the turn stays in line with my desire to see 1) the hero not overcome the villain because “he wants it more” and 2) the hero finding himself on unequal advantage over the antagonist. The film did a great job of maintaining symmetry and power equity, which kept stakes high (unlike in a film like Cpt. Marvel, where the fully realized power of the heroine removes the concern for her safety. There are decisions of comedy being made in the case of Cpt Marvel, but it still means that her fight sequences are not really about worrying that she’ll lose).

Shazam! did a wonderful job of avoiding cultural amnesia of super heroes and not bending over backwards to integrate its story into a shared universe with the pretty toxic missteps of Snyder’s Batman and Superman franchises or the more popular Aguahombre and Miramujer-centered movies. Because Shazam! is allowed to stand (or, perhaps more accurately, crouch in a cardboard box under a highway) on its own, it doesn’t have to contend with Easter eggs or momentum-killing side quests or underwhelming cameo send-ups. The film is manageable in its simplicity, fresh in its depiction of foster care, if not of youth culture more broadly (instead here it leans back on high school angst, impish liquor store hijinks, pervy **** bar tropes without bothering to get too insightful or specific.

The film’s use of Jack Dylan Grazer (of Stephen King’s It remake) to play the fast-talking and very charming sidekick/manager of Shazam is a mixed bag. Freeman is portrayed as having a physical disability that requires him to move around with the use of a crutch, and at times his character’s disability seems like it’s used as a hallpass to make jokes about his vulnerable he is as a “cripple”. Even with the eye rolls and tongue-in-cheek gags, it does feel a little stomach-churning to hear this nice kid put on a kind of minstrel show. That being said, the film does a fine job at other times of making his disability part of a more universal metaphor of invisibility and the sense of helplessness that many disadvantaged youth feel.

Shazam! is, as many reviews have pointed out, an excellent approximation of a Marvel movie, without much of the baggage that Marvel movies have 20 films in and counting. It’s got some laugh out loud moments an an excellent cast of characters, hopefully turning the page on a stale formula of grittiness from previous DC movies.

Lots of fun but the final act sucks. Think Penny Marshall’s Big but more pretentious and predictable

O filme no geral, é super banal, os atores não combinam com os personagens, e o enredo é desnecessário.

Superhero spell spectacle of the really good kind.

The film strikes like lightning, puts you in a good mood and has so many cross-references and Easter eggs ... grandios.

In addition, great acting .... a good one is ready

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the beginning I thought that "SHAZAM!" could be a really good movie, because there weren't a lot which bothered me, apart from the presentation of the main villain and the seven deadly sins. But that changed as soon as they made more jokes and the story began to roll. Some jokes really did well, but most of them weren't funny in my opinion. Even Billy Batson did annoy me at some point on account of his nearly hilarious greenness and the licensed music also didn’t right fit in there. I wouldn't have needed the Shazam-family, but they turned out pretty okay.
In the end "SHAZAM!" wasn't that good, but not nearly as bad as I thought before.

Usually DC goes for a much more darker tone that 9 out of 10 times can only be appealing to Edgy Teens. Granted there are exceptions but none that I have seen recent.

Shazam! is a much more light hearted. Sometimes the movie can be cheesy. However the cheesiness feels less like cheese and more like fun. In other words similar to how I would describe Super Mario games.

I would describe Shazam! as a light hearted fun experience and nothing that is meant to be taken all that seriously.

The DCEU has never looked so wholesome. After some disappointing releases, DC finally made a good movie since TDKR. This has been a KILLER year for DC, releasing this fun family adventure AND Joker, which may be my favorite movie of all time. The DCEU has never looked so wholesome. While I mostly enjoyed this, I'd call it a movie with good moments rather than a good movie. I felt like this could've been an outstanding movie with lots of heart and lots of humor, but it just didn't quite make it.

This week we have Shazam! DC Movies tries it’s hand again at another standalone feature hero film. And I bet you’re wondering how they will fare this time. Well luckily for you, I obliged by seeing this movie 2 weeks prior to its opening. DC definitely took a risk with David F. Sandberg, known for movies Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, as the director for this movie. But it seems that DC is committed to him as there are rumors of a sequel. Based on the visuals of Shazam, this may be a good move. Also, for once the trailers didn’t give away the whole movie. Either way, here we go.

Shazam! lends itself to being DC’s version of a teen-friendly version of Marvel’s Deadpool, minus breaking the 4th wall. DC has worked on providing viewers with a second version of what Marvel already created in their universe by giving a separate genre within the superhero movie category, a family teen comedy superhero origin story. This film is starkly different from every other DC superhero movie that has come out recently. Will this movie be heralded like Wonder Woman?… NO. But they are targeting completely different audiences. Is this movie as good as Wonder Woman?… Yes, as the end result is as pleasing.

Let’s start by saying this is a typical origin film for a superhero. You will take a ride with Billy Batson and the main villain, albeit a ride that is about 15 minutes too long. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the rollercoaster as it hits its peaks and valleys. There is strong comedic dialogue in this movie that will remind you of your childhood and family. With that said, I would’ve enjoyed this movie a little bit more with better demonstration of powers by both the villain and Captain Marvel. This is something that DC has struggled with in many of their films. Nevertheless Shazam! is a slow burn, but if you give it a chance by the end of movie I know you’ll be entertained and invested in the family.

With that said, gather the troops and head to the theater for this DC superhero movie. Of course, hit the matinee, if possible, but if you’re taking the kids you won’t be disappointed with your nighttime price.
