This is one of the most funOut of all the DCEU movies so far, this is the best for me. Not because it means it's actually good or great or a masterpiece, but because it's so silly, cheesy and funny that it makes the movie so fun to watch. This is one of the most fun experiences I've had watching a movie this year, because this movie doesn't take itself too seriously and that's fine, you can't make a movie about a kid that transforms into a guy in red spandex when he yells a word actually serious or dark, it's meant to be silly and that's what this movie is, filled with tons of self-aware humor that makes fun of superhero clichés, over-the-top and cartoonish characters and performances (Like it looks that Zachary Levi had so much fun playing the character, you can tell) and it's a movie to spend a pretty good time overall, this isn't a superhero movie, it's a borderline comedy and I liked that. Think of it as Deadpool for kids. It's got a diverse cast and for once, the child actors aren't terrible. The special effects are also top-notch. Shazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself ShazamShazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself Shazam nowadays due to an old DC lawsuit against its creators for copying Superman and the Captain Marvel name having been trademarked by Marvel Comics.

This movie may not be the most original in its genre (ironically Shazam and Doctor Sivana's dynamic resembles that of Superman and Lex Luthor, a superhero against a bald and mad scientist), but makes up for it with a funny and touching script themed around family. True to this theme, the movie even introduces Shazam's (or rather, Captain Marvel's) Marvel Family. In juxtaposition, Shazam's enemy Doctor Sivana has clear family issues. Sure there are a few plot missteps here and there (particularly the sub-plot about Billy Batson's mother which could have been handled in a better way), but it's mostly a great story. There are also a few connections with the wider DC universe, culminating in a faceless Superman making a silent cameo in the ending. In the mid-credits scene, the movie introduces Mister Mind, one of the most obscure DC villains.

Zachary Levi is great as Shazam, but I loved the buddy duo of Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy Batson and Freddy respectively. Mark Strong and Djimon Hounsou weren't as good in their roles as Doctor Sivana and the wizard Shazam.

I liked this movie and definitely want a sequel.

It can get caught up in familiar tropes from other leading superhero films, but it manages to break out of them by pushing the boundaries and simply giving the audience what they want - a great time at the movies. Its story is good, and its acting is even better. Zachary Levi plays the part of Shazam brilliantly, and like Tom Hanks in Big, shows a great amount of honesty and humor of being Billy - a kid stuck in an adult body. Jack Dylan Grazer gives another great performance as Billy's 'manager' and new foster brother Freddie. Mark Strong proves to be a strong enough villain for the film, or at least the most thought out villain of the DCEU at this time, and proves to be a worthy foe in this type of film. Shazam is also heartfelt and provides kids watching with a good message by the end. By far, the film is something DC should be proud of, and hopefully something we will see more of in the future. To avoid confusion (and a lot of potential legal issues) this version of Captain Marvel instead goes by the heroes other name ‘Shazam!’ in the funniest and most wholesome film DC has released to date.

It stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young boy who was orphaned at a young age after losing his mother at a carnival. Shortly after arriving at a new foster home, he is summoned by an ancient wizard in to another dimension. This wizard tells Billy that he is pure of heart and passes all his power in to him so that everytime he says Shazam he turns into a superpowered version of Zachary Levi. It’s basically the superpowered version of Big.

Just like some earlier kids adventure films like Stand By Me and Monster Squad, the writers of Shazam understand how to write children and after gaining these powers he reacts in any way you’d expect a 14 year old boy to react. He’s less interested in being a superhero and more interested in having fun, showing off to crowds and becoming a YouTube celebrity. These reactions are perfected by Levi, who is the ideal man-child for the role. All his reactions seem so genuine and his joy from discovering all his new powers is very contagious.

Another great stand out is Jack Grazzer as Billy’s friend from his new foster home, a superhero geek who ends up more or less using Shazam as his own personal plaything. Billy’s entire foster family is also extremely entertaining, ranging from his hilarious foster sister to his surprisingly sweet foster parents. Not all the family members get a lot of screen time, but they all leave a memorable impression and a strong desire to see more from them in any future sequels. Even Mark Strong as the films ridiculously over the top villain was great and at times even a little intimidating. His character has been obsessed with obtaining the power of Shazam ever since the wizard denied him the powers when he was a child, so he releases the seven deadly sins to take these powers by force. These sins are represented as horrifying monsters that often act less like supervillains and more like they were ripped from a horror movie. With a lower budget compared to most tentpole superhero movies, the fight scenes don’t have the same scale that something like Aquaman has. But this is largely to the films advantage, with the fight scenes they do have being a lot more focused and avoid the CGI mess that comes from something like Transformers.

But just like Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse before it, Shazam! always keeps its characters at its core with a lot of sincerity and even a lot of surprisingly emotional moments. The whole film is certainly a nice change of pace for DC, who have become increasingly diverse in their recent film set and sets the ideal whimsical tone for one of their goofiest superhero origins.

However, with Shazam!, I was laughing out loud at close to 50% of what was thrown my way. Albeit the laughs may be entirely based around character stupidity, this was my movie to enjoy nonetheless. Zachary Levi had me entertained with his sheer presence alone. What keeps it from perfection are some childish moments towards the end, some lackluster storytelling regarding the backstory, and a villain that could have used some work... Regardless, it was a heck of a good time at the cinema. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1) Totally predictable story, as we've seen in many, many, many movies. 2) Except for Zachary Levi, all other actors are really bad. 3) Lame attempt at humour: I've found about two scenes that are really funny, other than those, nobody did laugh on my session - they have even insisted on an incredibly lame joke FOUR TIMES in the movie (yes, Santa jokes).
4) There was so much potential on the true villains (seven sins) side to be explored, yet I don't even know the bald guy's name. The villain guy is just plain evil without motives other than a kid's frustration - and he's SO POWERFUL AND YET, FOR NO REASON, he wants to fight Shazam, simply because he wants to be alone! That's not very creative.
5) And to kill the movie: add some heartwarming moral lesson about family and whatever. Ok I get it, it's a family movie. But then, it's a movie for kids, not worth it if you're over 20 years old. 6) At least CGI is good enough.

Let’s hope it doesn’t get ahead of itself, but with much deserved hits such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman and most recently Shazam! it’s hard to deny they are doing something right. Shazam! is a great superhero film that brings a golden age sense of humour and a dark and interesting plot line together. Zachary Levi (Shazam) is great for his role as a kid trapped in a adults body, I did feel as if Zachary Levi was not the best portrayal of how Billy Batson would act if he was a superhero, but that is a small point. Jack Dylan Grazer is one of the best actors in the film, he portrays a nerdy “sidekick” to Shazam but not without its ups and downs. The villain is played by Mark Strong, I thought he was a terrifyingly cool and serious addition to Shazam!. The monsters that Mark Strong (Sivanna) control are a low point to the film, the VFX made them look fake and lifeless ( I get they might have been trying to portray this but i didn’t think it worked.) It’s hard to find a superhero film that is a perfect blend of funny, serious, dark, exciting and entertaining and this definitely meets those standards! Expand

With many hero movies arriving, and most involving world-ending situations, this one is refreshing, focusing on the heart of why we like superheroes to begin with. There is no bright laser cannon in the sky or high-military scenario. Just a young teenager who becomes a superhero and enjoys all the unexpected perks to being one. The comedy is smart, witty, and lands. The cast is fantastic and the overall look and feel of the film is grounded, but still spectacular. You don't want to miss this one. Expand

One very good example being Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, Peter Parker was relatable so were the people he cared for and later on in the movie when the stakes where high we felt the emotional depth of losing a loved one. In that regards Shazam is very similar where the stakes were high for the main characters of the movie and by this it was able to tell us a very personal, character centric story with family values at heart.

Shazam is a superhero movie where action was never the main priority of the movie , before the word "Shazam" are first spoken we are well versed with Billy Batson (Shazam alter ego), Freddy( Billy Foster brother) , the rest of foster family and the villain. It may be called a slow start by some but what it does is that later on in the movie when these character makes a huge decision or anyone of them is in peril you feel the emotional impact too as the viewer. The actors were very well casted especially the character of Freddy, Billy Batson and Shazam who are played by Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel and Zachary Levi respectively. Jack stole the show in every scene he was in , Asher successfully bought depth where it was needed and Zachary played a 14 year old like a 14 year old and not some adult acting stupid and weird. The villain played by Mark Strong is also set up a little bit to provide contrast to the protagonist. There was nothing special about him other than providing the stage for protagonist to grow as a character which is okay for an origin movie.
The Movie was directed by David F. Sandberg who is a huge inspiration for young film-makers, he only had a Youtube channel few years ago and now he has directed 3 Hollywood movies. I liked his direction for the most part especially how he was able to tell a great story with developed characters and he also managed to inject some horror elements ( his usual genre style) which were great although I think the actions scene could have been better like in final battle slow motions were used unnecessarily . The final battle also seemed a tad bit longer than it had to be, although it was able to drive home the point of true meaning a family successfully which was the whole point anyway.
I think the cinematography was very basic and didn't worked for me and the soundtrack was nothing special too which were strong suit of previous DC movies.
Having said that Shazam delivered in most of the areas like characters, story and humor and never in its 2hr 12min run time it made me bored, although I wished the cinematography and soundtrack were a bit better. Ultimately I think this movie was not about saying "Shazam" but what it means to say the word "Shazam!".

Perhaps had I been a bit younger the jokes would have landed more often (although one of the gags truly had me in stitches), but regardless the last 30 minutes let me down to the extent that I adjusted my mid-movie rating from an 8 to a 6. The short review: A funny superhero origin story that gradually loses its shine due to lack of seriousness and later becomes something akin to a Power Rangers film. The kids would love it!

Related media: I have not read the comics on this hero nor watched cartoons based on this character.

What's it like?: This film has elements of past films where teenagers are suddenly given powers (for example Spider-man's story), Big (1988) and films on Power Rangers.

Mid- or post-credit scenes: There's one in the middle and one at the end (that has a great punchline).

Positives: 1) The film is funny in many places, though this becomes less frequent over time.

2) The caring nature of the foster home's parents is an inspiration to all. If only all foster homes are like that!

Negatives: 1) The film lacks sharpness. There are many instances where Shazam! could have been killed off, but wasn't, simply because this is a children film. Relatedly, the villain is not clinical enough and seems to do the cliche over-confident villain thing of taking his sweet time to kill off our hero. Boohoo!

2) The 'S' in Shazam! is referring to the wisdom of Solomon. Despite being given the powers of Shazam!, this hero did not get all that wise! He remained a dumb kid, doing dumb things in dumb ways. Sure, there were instances where he had showed wisdom, but they were not beyond the level of an adult nor at the level of a superhero. 3) The film's running time could have been compressed by some 30 minutes. A few tropes are repeatedly shown and everything just moves somewhat slowly, as if the film is meant for kids.

4)Shazam! foster brother, Freddy, is a rather irritating character.

5) Late on, the story degenerates into a Power Rangers trope, which is both interesting and disappointing. If the film had been more clinical, then this would not have been necessary.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Excellent

Teens: Good

Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Average

Old adults: Average Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Save your money and watch it on TV.

I don't know why SHAZAM! is getting such high praise. To the point it's getting higher aggregated user scores than Wonder Woman?!

The scripting is kind of bad. There's no agency for Billy, he's an angry kid that was given powers and suddenly turned good for no reason. Not enough time was actually spent on his time with the family to actually have turned him over a new leaf.

He went from lone wolf irresponsible kid with super powers to I love this family so much and I have to save the world in no time flat, because.... REASONS!

The only redeeming parts are some of the funny moments in the show. It had a lot of potential that was never fulfilled.

It's at most a 6/10 movie. Do yourself a favour and use the money to rent Into the Spider-verse, even if you have already watched it.

Me a few years ago: "Hey DC, are you trying to f**k this up on purpose? Seriously! What the hell is going on over there."

DC: OK Matt

Me after Shazam: Well, that's more like it.

I've been harsh at DC for awhile now, but for good reasons. I don't want them to fail, it's just that they keep missing the point. However they are listening and improving. If this is the direction DC is taking, then I think it will exciting and ambitious, if done properly.

'Shazam!' is the true hero DC needs right now, right behind 'Wonder Women' for this rocky cinematic universe. It’s fun, light-hearted, funny and embraces the corniness. Although don’t let that trick you into thinking it doesn’t have any serious moments, because when it gets dark, it’s absolutely terrifying and no surprise the director’s previous work are horror movies. Throughout the movie, I would occasionally have flashbacks to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Not to say it’s a great or perfect movie, as it’s got problems. The visual effects looked pretty good (for the most part), however the other times it either looks out of place or unfinished, like needed more time to polish up. It takes a while for things to get moving in the first act, and not to say it’s dull, just padding along. And that’s really it for issues.

Zachary Levi is an absolute joy to watch as Shazam and the older version of Billy. Levi oozes with charisma and a clear indication from his introduction he was born to play this role. I can’t imagine any other actor in the role than him. There was never a scene where I didn’t buy him as a kid in a man’s body. Asher Angel as Billy Batson also did a great job, especially during the more dramatic scenes, which I thought he performed beautifully. Levi had the comedic elements, while Asher had the emotional elements.

Jack Dylan Grazer is great once again and a promising young star. He can express some much emotion through his face and eyes, despite looking like he’s up to something. The chemistry between him and Levi (and Asher) are dynamic.

Mark Strong plays the main villain Dr. Sivana, which Strong best describes him as “an evil son of a b**ch”. While not the best or the most compelling villain of all time, but at least his motivations are clear and you understand what he’s been through. Heck, the film starts with a young Sivana experiencing a traumatic event that shaped him to be what he is. I can tell Mark Strong was having a blast and he was menacing enough to be a threat.

The other child actors were also pretty good, although some of them took a while to fully grow on me. Once they did, it was good and dandy. Also the foster parents are the sweetest people in the world.

Another thing to mention is how genuinely well written it is. The humor and the punchline to every joke was surprisingly funny, which I didn’t expect judging by how cringe the trailers falsely advert it. I find it compelling that we see Billy learning how to use his given powers step by step, even the end climax he’s still learning. David Sandberg manages to juggle some many themes and tones, but impressively never came off as “too much” or a train wreck that any new director with a background in small budget movies would struggle at.

Still, I can’t believe a movie like “Shazam!” exist in the same universe as the bleak ‘Batman V Superman’ and the third worst thing to happen to America “Suicide Squad”. Even a familiar f̶a̶c̶e̶ shows up at the end.

Overall rating: Just say the name

The preliminary reviews and RT critic scores gave me hope that maybe it was a sleeper-hit, so I actually allowed myself to get excited.
We went on Thursday opening night, which was super easy because the theater wasn't even 1/3 of the way full.
By the middle of the movie, I could already tell that all my original fears were actually true, and beyond that, the "villain" was insanely throw away and forgettable.

Off their record of consistently bad films, DC Entertainment thinks sincerity means following impulsive actions, a mindset they convey with their newest addition to the extended universe, Billy (AKA, “Shazam”).

This kid enjoys food, not within a family dinner table, but alone at a burger joint to get high on fructose. Any sense of connection between himself and others is so empty, he barely even conveys any apparent thoughts on the fact that his disabled foster brother wants to be him: a big, tough, handsome man with superpowers and no physical ailments. Billy is so distanced from the viewer, that even an inanimate plush tiger has better character development.

Also embracing those McDonald’s carbs, yet somehow perfectly healthy, is Billy’s absent mom, whose barely present subplot conributes nothing to the point where it only distracts from the other conflicts. As much as it tries to uplift the heart of the feature, it does so in all the wrong places. Other elements within the script that would actually benefit from extra screentime don‘t get it, particularly a wizard with an aged hairstyle that marks him as the only controller of mass hysteria.

It’s better to quench thirst with something actually important, more so than anything that happens to the kid actors of this movie. These youngsters are neither good at acting nor playing decent role models; Billy’s first move is him locking up cops to rob their car, and without any real punishment for it after! Meanwhile, a young girl of Billy’s foster home always looks personally unphased by anything, even sights as miraculous as crocodiles with poker chips. This inactive lassie drags the rhythm of each scene down to the point where a recurring, funny Santa earns more attention than the leads.

Then there’s the unintentionally funny prologue to the film, which expects authenticity when one of the passive twerps of that scene grows up into a monologuing bad guy worth being mocked by some kid. He’s not someone to be taken seriously and should have been much grittier to shine a brighter light against the wisecracking protagonist. If this bad guy was jokingly called, “Thundercrack,” or “Captain Sparklefingers,” he would for sure react too softly to be realistic. But hey, at least those two nicknames serve as great modes of successful laughs during Billy’s hilarious discovery of his powers.

Billy doesn’t accept either of those nicknames as a superhero name, nor does he want to live under anyone besides a biological parent. That ambition is not one that anyone of mature mind would want to connect with, particularly seeing how horrible the mother is as seen through flashbacks, even more so than the stupid-looking CGI demons who throw people out of windows. Not even a teenager on a crutch with three months terminal cancer is successful at generating sympathy. As much as director David F. Sandberg utilizes his horror resume, he still flops at directing emotion while trying to modernize old tropes. There’s one point when an FAO Schwartz piano is incorporated into a mall fight, which is funny alright, but doesn’t flow into the intent of giving comic book movies a new edge.

The problem lies in the screenplay’s logic, which is still the exact same as comic books have been since their inception. Heck, this even takes it a step further by saying that Billy was chosen by the wizard because he’s apparently, “pure in heart.” Yeah, right! Why would an overacting jerk who relies on impulses, Frito’s in hand, be “pure in heart?” The same goes to his irksome ol’ sidekick with the crutch, he’s so annoying that it’s honestly satisfying when he gets beaten up by bullies. Surprising that these two hooligans manage to stay thin with all their freedom, it just boils down to the reality that the goal of these filmmakers is not about protecting Philadelphia, it’s about encouraging kids to misbehave while bodybuilding in a bold, classic costume. If we put ourselves in Billy’s place, and were forced to pick between stopping a bank robbery and a chocolate cake, of course the studio would send mind tricks compelling you to lean toward the bad decision.

The DCEU can try, but it will never top Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; the two standards fans hold to what a comic book movie can be. It’s not about the cool suit, it’s about allowing the viewer to think for him/herself about what tactics will truly redeem the city. Although Nolan’s and Sony’s respective versions of the classic vigilantes are certainly flawed, they hold a grail of genuine perfection compared to this electric lightning-bearing assassin.

I didnt expect much, but I got good humor, likable and believable characters, a great bad guy, nice setting, a nice ending.
All around one of the best DC movie, and I didnt like any of the newer ones except Suicide Squad and the Nolan Batman movies.

It'sA foster kid is seen as worthy by a wizard that grants him superpowers in which he can instantly turn into a superhero every time he yells the word "Shazam." He then finds himself going up against a supervillain that wants his powers. It's pretty much a cross between 'Superman' and 'Big' and has some fun moments and ideas. However, the movie just got way too corny and ridiculous for my liking and it was a little longer than I would've liked it to be. I was ready for it to be over about three quarters of the way through. And of course they try to set things up for a sequel in a post-credit scene which didn't interest me much at all. Overall, while it's childish at heart (which I know is the whole point), not only did it start to become predictable and borrow numerous other tropes from past superhero movies, it just wasn't really for me, and I just felt that it got a little too carried away with its silliness and fun. This is a nuanced take on BECOMING a hero. Then it has courage to stay with its theme. Not as moving emotionally as some superhero movies, it's more grounded and generous to a very wide range of minorities who might like to wear a cape. As often the case now, WONDERFUL and EFFECTIVE CASTING. A shout out to Mark Strong for another committed, effective performance. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK... So this movie was really cool way better than the trash Deadpool movies. But going through the end battle when they all became superheros killed the movie and the story for me. Very stupid move by stupid writers who does not even know what they doing. Why would you come up with a cool idea of a superhero then kill that idea at the same time? How is it going to be cool or special when they all can turn into shazam? Expand

When I saw the actor for Shazam is Zachary, I was disappointed, but after I watched it, he surprised me, actually he did a great job.

My only negative point in the movie is the character of the kid "Billy", I didn't see any match between him and "Zachary", "Billy" is so depressed and serious, in contrast, "Zachary" is so funny and talkative!!! I think "Freddy" character is more fit for this role instead of "Billy" character.

Finally, "Shazam!" is generally fun and worth to watch, beside it's suitable for all kids.

Shazam is way better than Captain Marvel! A great superhero movie with a lot of heart, Billy Batson is as compelling a character as Shazam. And I really loved the villain, Dr Sivana. He's what a super villain should be.

Must not be Marvel, and in fact it isn't. The film gets most of its funny vibe from the realization by the teen protagonist that his alter ego is a grown man and can therefore do things that would normally be precluded to minors, and in fact the first part is the one I enjoyed the most. There are so many scenes that had me laugh like crazy that I can only think the actor playing the adult Shazam (real superhero name: Captain Marvel, look it up if you don't believe me) must have had the time of his life with this role.
I didn't equally enjoy the second part, where we get to see the hero confront his nemesis, mostly because it's just a continuous, very long fighting scene. I think that creating a more nuanced story, splitting the action into multiple occurrences, would have helped immensely. Still, one great, lighthearted superhero movie that delivers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting from a DC movie. We all know they're very often a total disaster. But after watching Shazam I'm really shook, this movie wasn't that bad. In my opinion the thing that made this movie pleasure to watch were the jokes and funny situations. Everything thanks to our main protagonist who is really fantastic, and we can clearly see that the actor is having lots of fun while playing this role. The plot itself is interesting, I was enjoying the overall history. I think we can devide this movie into 3 parts. Before he gets his powers, when he already has them and fighting with villain. You can guess the second part was the best, really enjoyable, funny and interesting. For me the first part was really boring and i was sitting here thinking "when the movie will start already?". But suprisingly the last part was weak too. Shazam and villain were like dog and cat, they were just looking and screaming at each other without interesting moments, fights or stuff like that. The villain is the one from "because i wanted to" group which is really disappointing and he is really uninteresting. At the end I wanted to add that the sins look horrible, the cgi is gross and I couldn't stand looking at them.
But to sum up I have to say that despite all the little things that were really weird and uniteresting i enjoyed it and had fun :)
