I'm gonna be honest. Before this movie was announced I didn't even know who Shazam was. I had only seen him as one of those "random dudes I don't care about" heroes in the character selection screen of Injustice: Gods Among Us. So you canI'm gonna be honest. Before this movie was announced I didn't even know who Shazam was. I had only seen him as one of those "random dudes I don't care about" heroes in the character selection screen of Injustice: Gods Among Us. So you can assume that I was watching this movie as a blank slate. One of my friends was very excited about this movie. He told me that the critics had seen this movie a month earlier and give it good ratings. I was guessing it must be a children's movie, and that is what it was advertised as.

But when I saw it my mind was blown. I wouldn't exactly call it a children's movie, or even a family movie for that matter. I would put it in the same category as a Pixar movie, something which children and adults will see differently. Just as you start thinking this movie is for children, it throws one such event that the thought gets blown away from your mind, just like Dr Sivana's secretary when she touched the portal door (BA DM TSS).

The story, in spite of having a lot, still manages to go perfectly well with the runtime and not feel like a bloated mess. In just a little above 2 hours it showed Billy Batson's childhood, his character development, how he received his superpowers, how he learnt to use them, how he learnt to use them to help people and not to just fool around, his relation with his adopted family members, their character development, the villain's backstory, how the villain received his superpowers, how Billy and Sivana met the first time, how Billy understood the power of friendship and defeated the bad guy, how his life became afterwards and two post credit sequel announcements.

The CGI was also really good. In fact it was the selling point for me. I often watched Billy jumping from the rooftop and shouting Shazam over and over again because of how fun it was to watch. The seven deady sins also look very scary, just enough to scare children. Seeing Shazam fly and fight with indestructible enemies was like the experience of watching Man of Steel once again, except this time it was much funnier. I still don't understand how is this a low budget movie. It looks far more superior than half the DCEU and MCU movies in terms of budget (for reference, it's between $80-100 million. That's less than Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad and even Birds of Prey if it's on the lower end).

Shazam is the movie I would see with my whole family and enjoy every time I see it. It is so simple yet so complex, it is family friendly yet mature, it is serious yet so funny. If it had been my way this and Captain Marvel's box office collections would have been exchanged. It is perfect in every sense, with not a single scene of boredom.

I didn't even know about him until I played the first "Injustice" game back in 2013! That said, as soon as I learned about him, I did as much research as I could on this new (to me) super hero. I decided to start reading The New52 version of Shazam. I guess I picked the right version, because a few years later, it was announced that there will be a Shazam movie and it will be influenced by New52 Shazam!

I was pretty worried about the “Shazam!” movie considering DC movies’ track record (If anyone can **** it up, it’s Warner Bros. and DC)… Then the day came when I could finally see the movie… I sat in the theater as the credits rolled, mouth agape and corrected as **** This movie is AMAZING! It’s probably one of, it not THE best DC movies ever made! That's right, the likes of Batman and Superman have been cucked by none other than SHAZAM!

It’s no exaggeration that “Shazam!” is one of the best DC movies yet. The movie is a beautiful blend of goofy fun with proper superhero fanfare having scenes shifting between things kids will love and laugh at, to some pretty dark scenes that might actually freak a lot of kids out. The cinematography was spot on, and any overly analytical nerd (like me) will appreciate the superhero shots. The direction and acting were both impressive having Zachary Levi play a role he was tailor-made for with surprisingly excellent child actors (the girl who played Darla was amazing).

Now, if I could pick ONE thing that I was disappointed in, it would be the post credit stuff: I was pretty disappointed that Tawky Tawny didn’t make a real appearance in the film (the Easter eggs were a nice touch), but I am even more disappointed and downright SHOCKED that they didn’t foreshadow Black Adam in the post credits. I honestly thought that Doctor Sivana into Black Adam would have been the perfect segue, but they decided to go with Mister Mind. I’ve been told that Black Adam will be getting his very own movie, I guess if any super villain deserves his own movie (aside from The Joker), it’s Black Adam.

I certainly hope that “Shazam!” will work as an eye opener for Warner Bros. and DC to NOT make their movies so dark/grim/dreary and realize that all they have to do is step out of their comfort zone just a bit and take a more fun and lighthearted approach with their movies. I also hope that this movie will raise Shazam awareness and give him the popularity he deserves as I feel that this tragically overlooked super hero is one of the most underrated DC figures ever. With Wonder Woman, Aquaman (kinda) and “Shazam!” being excellent movies, it feels like DC is finally on an official roll and Marvel might have some proper competition to work against.

SHAZAM! is one of those movie I can turn to whenever I have nothing to watch. It is so entertaining, and just so fun! Zachary Levi is easily one of the most fun and likeable heroes as he plays The Red Cyclone, Captain Sparkle fingers, or whatever his name is. Jack Dylan Grazer steals the show though. Jack Dylan Grazer plays Freddie Freeman, a superhero loving fanboy who wishes he could be one. All of his lines are super funny and he's just great. The reason he's so great is because, we have probably been like Freddie at one point. We wish we could have the powers of Superman, or the gadgets of Batman. Also, unlike a lot of Superhero movies that try to be, SHAZAM! is really funny. Mostly all the jokes land and makes just for a fun time for everyone. The only complaints are some nitpicks, some minor plot holes, and why is Billy so different as a teen, and his superhero self? This movie though is just one of the most likeable, and watchable movies ever!(for me) Expand

Aprendiendo a ser superhéroe

Sumario

Learning to be a superhero

Summary

Review:

Billy Batson (Asher Angel), is a teenager who since childhood has been escaping from their transit homes and foster families to find his mother. Shortly after starting to live in Philadelphia with the last one, he fortuitously acquires super powers and an adult body (Zachary Levi), falling into the crosshairs of a fearsome villain, Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong).

Shazam! it recovers a certain spirit of the youth films of the 80s thanks to its playful spirit. It is a story about the origin myth of a superhero (and also of his nemesis) and his learning path in a comedy tone that, although it does not evade the rugged or sad aspects of the family stories of Batson and Sivana, never let them take center stage by overshadowing the tone, cutting them off with effective touches of humor (a bit in the manner of Tim Burton's Batman Returns). Fortunately, by not making concessions in this regard, the film directed by David F. Sandberg departs from the gravity and solemnity of many superhero films of the last decades. And the humor that he displays is not cool or self-conscious either.

In addition to the enmity and struggles with his enemy Dr. Sivana, the other (and perhaps main) axis of the film is Billy's friendship with Freddy (Jack Dylan Glazer, the protagonist of the series We Are Who We Are, de Luca Guadagnino), one of his “brothers” in the transit home, who accompanies him in his apprenticeship as a superhero. Precisely the most interesting and successful part of the film is the description of that bond, of a double dynamic for Freddy since it implies being a friend of the same person who can manifest himself as someone of the same age and as someone in an adult body and not so much the mismatches that Billy himself has with his new and extraordinary situation. You can even read the occasional provocative subtext in those situations.

The action scenes and special effects are very well resolved and in keeping with the tone of the film, the pace does not falter and the performances are very good, particularly that of the brilliant Jack Dylan Glazer, whose character breathes and articulates the humanity of everything. the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shazam is a great movie that offers up something that makes you feel like a kid again and knows how to illustrate the differing emotions required for each scene, whether it be the boardroom scene with Dr Sivana or the scene where Billy Batson finds his long lost mother. Also the message of family in the movie is brilliantly told, and Zachary Levi really pulls off the mannerisms of a kid and gives a brilliant performance as well as the likes of Mark Strong who pulls off playing a sympathetic villain really well. All in all this is a great film with brilliant characters and a simple yet well delivered message that should've gotten more attention when it released and is one of the best recent live action DC movies in years. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a good movie. Considering how DCEU has been the expectations for this film were low for me and considering how the character is too. But I was really surprised. THe comedy was amazing, like thor ragnorok. Although one main criticism is that there was no story, it was bland. The fact that the villains as chasing him as revenge did not make much sense, plus the villains as just forgettable it was a bit bland tbh. But other than that it was a well-made film with good jokes and more surprisingly better plot would have made it an amazing film. Expand
