With many hero movies arriving, and most involving world-ending situations, this one is refreshing, focusing on the heart of why we like superheroes to begin with. There is no bright laser cannon in the sky or high-military scenario. Just a young teenager who becomes a superhero and enjoys all the unexpected perks to being one. The comedy is smart, witty, and lands. The cast is fantastic and the overall look and feel of the film is grounded, but still spectacular. You don't want to miss this one. Expand

It's a winner for sure. Please spare a thought for young kids if your normal thinking is 'pfffft PG they'll be fine'. Shazam surprisingly plays like a light horror comedy for half the run time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, let’s clarify something here for the younger generation... Shazam existed well before the power rangers and the Marvel family goes back as far as the 1940s, so any copying was on the part of the power rangers. Now on to the review!

This was kind of like Big, if the boy in Big wished he were a super hero. It is genuinely a very entertaining movie for the whole family and it plays out well enough that I would like to see another one.

If you’ve read any of the reviews, you know that Billy Batson is an orphan that is chosen to wield the powers of Shazam, while his nemesis is chosen to be the champion of the 7 deadly sins (a host for demons). Although Billy has some growing pains as he learns to deal with the powers that he’s recently been granted and his lack of maturity doesn’t help. The movie plays out in a predictable way, that is actually comforting, because you would expect nothing less than a bit of immature antics from a teenage boy that’s suddenly thrust into an adult super heroes body.

Overall, it wasn’t too long and it had some surprises that had people in the audience screaming excitedly. If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend going and taking the family if you have one... Just ignore the 0 and 2 star reviews, because it’s clear they haven’t actually watched the movie.

Shazam delivers a really funny and at times action-packed movie although a few parts could be improved upon.

Zachary Levi is great as as Shazam, the superhero adult form of 14-yer old Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel). He really makes the movie, both bringing on the humor and managing to portray a young teenager. Jack Dylan Grazer, playing Billy's wiseguy foster brother Freddy Freeman, works so well off him. Heck, the entire foster family is played well. Each of the children is well acted with distinct, likable personalities. However, I was a little surprised that Mary (played by Grace Fulton), who along with Freddy is one of the biggest and longest-running characters of the Shazam (once known as Captain Marvel before legal issues) roster wasn't given more to do.

The movie is really funny, maybe not quite on the same pedestal as Daredevil, but not that far off either. I was worried that this movie was trying to be a superhero comedy but was shot in a down-to-Earth manner that does not try to make Philadelphia try to feel like a movie city at all. (The school Billy goes to looks like a real outdated school that was built back in the 70s/80s.) However, the humor and action blends in surprisingly well with the setting.

Shazam fans will be pleased to see several Easter Eggs to the 40's golden age that you wouldn't expect them to be able to pull off. Be SURE to stay through the mid-credits. There is also an after credits scene, but it isn't as essential. It's just a funny throwaway bit like the endings to Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, although this one is funnier.

As much as I liked this film, there were moments that could have been improved upon. The second act does run a bit long. Too much time is spent on Freddy and Billy having shenanigans with Shazam's powers. The time could've been spent developing the villain and some of the foster kids more; the former in particular. This is not to say that Mark Strong's Dr. Thaddeus Sivana was a bad villain. He isn't paper thin like Thor: The Dark World's Malekith. The antagonist's motivations are set up well, and Strong does a good job, being particularly threatening in the final confrontation. However, the character still could've been fleshed out a little more and have more personality. (We never even learn what he is a doctor of).

There are a couple of bullies at BIlly's school that are way too broadly written. There are some creature effects , while designed well, suffer from being another Hollywood creation that is drably colored grey.

The movie tries to be too many things and two elements really took me out of it. Billy has a serious subplot, his quest for his mother, and although I applaud the writers for giving the character an emotional backstory and trying to be more than just a comedy, it always felt like I was watching a different film.

The other element was a couple of scary deaths that never jive with the feel of the rest of the film, especially considering its supposed to be a family picture. Director Larry F. Sandberg stated that he was trying to capture the scary moments from the films he saw as a kid, but I felt he crossed the fine line between fun scary and sadistic. Listen, I'm not saying all family films should be sugar-coated and children's ability to handle things underestimated. In fact there are some darker moments in the final confrontation with Sivana, including one scene where Billy is in real trouble, that are effective. A lot of us have scary parts they remember fondly as kids (like the Large Marge scene in the Pee-Wee movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or Return to Oz). But a lot of those kept the scares quick and to the point. Too much time is spent lingering on the victims being in pain and fear. It feels like torture. (Parents may worry more about their children becoming desensitized than being scared.) It contrasts too much with the joke elements. It's a lot like that creepy scene in Superman 3 where the woman is slowly transformed into a robot. I never hear of anyone who as a kid who wasn't just scared-scared and not fondly scared of that scene. The reason I'm guessing is because it was so atonal compared to the rest of the film, drawn out, arbitrary, awkward, uncomfortable, and came out of the blue that it never quite landed with children. Same with the deaths here.

The out-of-film moments are in the first two acts. Everything is ironed out by the third. It is so good and surprising that it may be one of my favorite superhero movie finales.

I recommend this. I'll definitely own it. When this movie is great, it's great. Just expect some dips here and there.

Not because it means it's actually good or great or a masterpiece, but because it's so silly, cheesy and funny that it makes the movie so fun to watch. This is one of the most fun experiences I've had watching a movie this year, because this movie doesn't take itself too seriously and that's fine, you can't make a movie about a kid that transforms into a guy in red spandex when he yells a word actually serious or dark, it's meant to be silly and that's what this movie is, filled with tons of self-aware humor that makes fun of superhero clichés, over-the-top and cartoonish characters and performances (Like it looks that Zachary Levi had so much fun playing the character, you can tell) and it's a movie to spend a pretty good time overall, this isn't a superhero movie, it's a borderline comedy and I liked that. It'sA foster kid is seen as worthy by a wizard that grants him superpowers in which he can instantly turn into a superhero every time he yells the word "Shazam." He then finds himself going up against a supervillain that wants his powers. It's pretty much a cross between 'Superman' and 'Big' and has some fun moments and ideas. However, the movie just got way too corny and ridiculous for my liking and it was a little longer than I would've liked it to be. I was ready for it to be over about three quarters of the way through. And of course they try to set things up for a sequel in a post-credit scene which didn't interest me much at all. Overall, while it's childish at heart (which I know is the whole point), not only did it start to become predictable and borrow numerous other tropes from past superhero movies, it just wasn't really for me, and I just felt that it got a little too carried away with its silliness and fun. The villain's family dynamics were also fantastic, leading a a massively underrated and scary villain with opposing family dynamics to Billy Batson. It was incredible to see these characters demonstrate morals and feeling based on their situation. It is the most real family representation in a movie to date.

Beyond this, the super hero dynamics and action was also incredible, with fun and fantastic fight scenes and great motives. This makes Shazam stand out in a crowd of monotonous super hero films in our generation.

Shazam is funny, too. The jokes landed and never felt forced. The jokes were derived from the characters and how they would converse and react. These characters felt so real, and the jokes felt like they came from the characters rather than a focus on jokes first.

Shazam's writing is impeccable. It creates such a beautiful world with characters that feel real and situations that fit the characters. The characters and scenes had beautiful continuity, making everything feel real despite the movies focus on magic wizards.

Oh boy(!),the things you can do with an almost $100 Million budget…

It’s hard to know what Warner Bros. and DC are trying to do as of now… Yeah, they’re trying to be bright and colorful after a grimy start (even if that means both Batman V Superman’s Ultimate Cut and Wonder Woman had that tone and were still 24k Gold),but yeah. I can assure you they did it. They finally made a good movie that isn’t a CG Fest or one Production Hell of a movie that tries hardcore to ride the Slappy Go-Lucky Marvel tone.
“Shazam!” is fantastic and joyous and energetic and yes,it’s the Superhero version of Big. That mixed with Superman The Movie. If anything,I’ll remember it for the child actors. Hell yeah, these boys and girls are some of the best child actors I’ve ever seen on film (alongside Us and The Last Crusade). It’s such a breath of fresh air, considering the movie I saw last week has some of the more annoying child actors. Zachary Levi is having a lot of fun as Shazam and you can tell he cares about the role.
The story also gives a subplot for Billy Batson (Asher Angel),which is so rare in this kind of movie (again, even for a movie with child actors as main leads) while it’s this big story about Learning to be a hero. Unlike the other Origin Stories,it’s probably going to be my main go-to when I’ll make some Action Comics (just like how Marvel watches Superman The Movie for inspo). Unlike Captain Marvel,no limitations with the Screenplay and they have so many liberties with it,which makes me think Warner was like “Ehh,no one knows this superhero, let’s just let the writers screw around with whatever contraption they have…”. But also, nothing great about VFX work. It’s just there.
The score by Benjamin Wallfisch (Blade Runner 2049,IT and the upcoming HellBoy) is so 80’s or 90’s,you can’t help it,but compare it to Superman The Movie. I’m not saying it as a bad thing, but more of it as a compliment. The joyous and adventurous bits that swell throughout the movie...
Surprisingly enough, the movie manages to get brutal. Human Decapitation happens in here, and it’s half-great and half-expected,coming from the same director of Annabelle Creation.
That mostly happens with the villain, which is also the weaker part of the movie. Sure,he has powers and acts as a villain (and some spoilery stuff I won’t talk in here),but it’s mostly a Villain that is there for the sake of the movie, and also to mirror most of the Hero’s powers.
And some moments happen for Plot Convenience (which I really despise). But then again, you’re in the theater to have fun,and that’s what matters coming from “Shazam!”:A not so serious (literally) Superhero Movie that has some genuine heart put into it. There’s a cameo in this movie that will blow minds for sure (just like the last Superhero Movie I saw). What more do you want from that?

I saw this with my 14 yr old son today and it delivered exactly what the trailer promised, it has a great feel good factor and the excellent comedic sensibilities of the well chosen cast ensured we laughed numerous times throughout. Really the only problem I have with Shazam! is in its basic run-of-the-mill plot but then it is a well worn genre by now...

Unlike other movies, here we have a character development that succeeds to overcome his problems, and not just handling his new superpowers but also his family problems as well. The jokes told during the movie were kind dumb but hey, we are watching a 15 year old boy inside a adult body making what any 15 year old would do if he finds up with newly adquired super powers.

About the soundtrack. They used the nostalgia formula yet again. The big difference here is that they don't overuse it. Overall, good soundtrack.

About the CGI. Generally speaking, CGI effects were good but at some scenes of the movie you can tell that they use CGI.

At the end of the movie. Good final battle but I think they overdued to show the full potencial of character. Overall, a good movie.

The scripting is kind of bad. There's no agency for Billy, he's an angry kid that was given powers and suddenly turned good for no reason. Not enough time was actually spent on his time with the family to actually have turned him over a new leaf.

He went from lone wolf irresponsible kid with super powers to I love this family so much and I have to save the world in no time flat, because.... REASONS!

The only redeeming parts are some of the funny moments in the show. It had a lot of potential that was never fulfilled.

It's at most a 6/10 movie. Do yourself a favour and use the money to rent Into the Spider-verse, even if you have already watched it.

I like that they flesh him out a bit.

One of the things I like is that this movie can get really dark at times. There is one scene that genuinely shocked me with how dark it was. I wouldn’t say don’t take your kids to see Shazam but expect some pretty hardcore moments. Also, there are a few jokes that are obviously meant only for adults, but kids my age would know what they mean.

One complaint I have about the film is how different Billy acts when he is Shazam. One moment he’s sort of a mean dude and the next he’s cracking jokes and flossing! That’s why Shazam himself is one of the weaker parts of the film.

As for the jokes? There amazing! Almost every single one landed and there are so many more I missed that I’ll have to rewatch to to catch. There are a lot of jokes but the movie never gets overly jokey.

So, how does Shazam compare to the rest to DCEU? He can fit in a team up movie and in the universe as a whole and so far is my favorite character of them all!

Verdict:
Shazam! Is a funny blast! It is my favorite DCEU film and so far my favorite 2019 movie! I highly recommend it.

8.3/10 - Great

Humor was more entertaining than the times it fell flat. (Santa)

The beginning was a solid 8. Could have been a 9 if it handled some of its good ideas better. (Bus scene was a great idea, but handled poorly)

Then the action sequences took a child cartoon approach. (for obvious reasons) Which drastically hurt the last bit of the movie for me. (Ironically, most people enjoyed the ending, and hated the start. But then again, most super hero fans tend to like action, and I tend to find it boring, if nothing interesting is happening.)

The ending could have been a massive success, if they copied ONE thing from the marvel movies. (Sadly I can't say what it is, otherwise knowing it doesnt contain this, is a sort of spoiler.) But like the rest of the movie, the ending has a GREAT idea, and handled it poorly. (probably to save on money.)

RATING: 70% Above average, and mostly enjoyable.
Semi comparable to Thor3, humor wasnt as spot on as Thor3, but the actual plot was more interesting than Thor3.

This movie shows that superhero movies can tell more than just being a funny superhero movie but also a serious film as well, as long as they do it right. This leads into the character development that happens in this film, mainly with Billy. From the beginning to the end Billy doesn’t stay the same but he changes. Now, I have to talk about the acting of course and what else can I say other than its spectacular. Everybody in this film does their job at a hundred and ten percent. I want to mainly talk about Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer because they were the main ones you follow. First Zachary Levi was a perfect choice to play Shazam because he had fun with this role. He played it as if it was a real-life teenager who just got superpowers and doesn’t know what to do with them. He had great chemistry with Jack Dylan Grazer and they could easily bounce stuff off of each other easily. They both were hilarious too. Jack Dylan Grazer is going to have a promising career when he gets older. Talking about being funny, the movie all around is a hilarious ride. Whether it is poking fun at a superhero cliché or just a funny line the movie knew when to be funny and when to tone it down and be serious again. My only real problem with the film is the Villain Thaddeus Sivana, played by Mark Strong. Now, don’t get me wrong they do give him a decent reason for doing what he’s doing and he’s played well by Mark Strong it’s just he seems weak compared to everybody else in this film. In the end, this film is great other than the villain and is worth checking out. I give Shazam a 9.5/10. Expand

It can get caught up in familiar tropes from other leading superhero films, but it manages to break out of them by pushing the boundaries and simply giving the audience what they want - a great time at the movies. Its story is good, and its acting is even better. Zachary Levi plays the part of Shazam brilliantly, and like Tom Hanks in Big, shows a great amount of honesty and humor of being Billy - a kid stuck in an adult body. Jack Dylan Grazer gives another great performance as Billy's 'manager' and new foster brother Freddie. Mark Strong proves to be a strong enough villain for the film, or at least the most thought out villain of the DCEU at this time, and proves to be a worthy foe in this type of film. Shazam is also heartfelt and provides kids watching with a good message by the end. By far, the film is something DC should be proud of, and hopefully something we will see more of in the future. To avoid confusion (and a lot of potential legal issues) this version of Captain Marvel instead goes by the heroes other name ‘Shazam!’ in the funniest and most wholesome film DC has released to date.

It stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young boy who was orphaned at a young age after losing his mother at a carnival. Shortly after arriving at a new foster home, he is summoned by an ancient wizard in to another dimension. This wizard tells Billy that he is pure of heart and passes all his power in to him so that everytime he says Shazam he turns into a superpowered version of Zachary Levi. It’s basically the superpowered version of Big.

Just like some earlier kids adventure films like Stand By Me and Monster Squad, the writers of Shazam understand how to write children and after gaining these powers he reacts in any way you’d expect a 14 year old boy to react. He’s less interested in being a superhero and more interested in having fun, showing off to crowds and becoming a YouTube celebrity. These reactions are perfected by Levi, who is the ideal man-child for the role. All his reactions seem so genuine and his joy from discovering all his new powers is very contagious.

Another great stand out is Jack Grazzer as Billy’s friend from his new foster home, a superhero geek who ends up more or less using Shazam as his own personal plaything. Billy’s entire foster family is also extremely entertaining, ranging from his hilarious foster sister to his surprisingly sweet foster parents. Not all the family members get a lot of screen time, but they all leave a memorable impression and a strong desire to see more from them in any future sequels. Even Mark Strong as the films ridiculously over the top villain was great and at times even a little intimidating. His character has been obsessed with obtaining the power of Shazam ever since the wizard denied him the powers when he was a child, so he releases the seven deadly sins to take these powers by force. These sins are represented as horrifying monsters that often act less like supervillains and more like they were ripped from a horror movie. With a lower budget compared to most tentpole superhero movies, the fight scenes don’t have the same scale that something like Aquaman has. But this is largely to the films advantage, with the fight scenes they do have being a lot more focused and avoid the CGI mess that comes from something like Transformers.

But just like Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse before it, Shazam! always keeps its characters at its core with a lot of sincerity and even a lot of surprisingly emotional moments. The whole film is certainly a nice change of pace for DC, who have become increasingly diverse in their recent film set and sets the ideal whimsical tone for one of their goofiest superhero origins.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I still think that Man of Steel and even BvS are overall better movies, Shazam is still a very strong entry in the DCEU and one of the best superhero movies in years. And that's because it's not exactly a superhero movie but more of a 80's kids movie starring a superhero. With all the cheesiness, heartfelt moments and a few dark ones as well.

The trailers really made the film seem like a dumb comedy, but even though it's mostly lighthearted fun, I was surprised to see that it has a lot of dramatic moments and even some pretty dark ones that makes me wonder how they got away with it in a kids movie. After all, not many family friendly superhero films have as villains demons that embody the seven deadly sins and bite peoples heads off. But the best quality of Shazam is how it knows when to do comedy, drama and action without breaking the tone. So there are no serious dramatic moments ruined by crappy jokes 30 seconds later. The characters are good, the acting is decent enough and the villain is one of the best we've gotten in recent years.

Unfortunatelly, there are issues that stop this film from being great, mainly the writting. First, it's the protagonist. He's a pretty fun character and well acted by both the adult and the kid, but he is pretty inconsistently portrayed. He actually seems more mature as a teenager than he is in the adult form. And then there are the rest of the kids. The movie doesn't spend a long time developing their relationship with the protagnist, Billy, so when the time comes for him to finally accept that they are his new family it seems pretty forced as he barely interacts with most of them. Also, the moment when they all turn ino Power Rangers at the end is corny as hell. The movie should have spent more on these characters and Billy instead of the overdrawn action climax at the end.

But despite all its problems, Shazam is so far the most entertaining movie of the year. DC seems to be on a roll latelly and who knows, maybe if they keep putting up good movies with no SJW crap in them they might take Marvel's place after Endgame.

He can switch between characters with the uttering of the movie's title. In addition to the usual tropes and tangles, this film gets most of its comic energy from the teen angle: the 2 best friends are nerds and trying to figure out how to use these recently-acquired powers (and his grown-up body). Although it's not especially funny and the action sequences aren't original, the spunky energy and lively characters make it an enjoyable entry to the genre, especially for family audiences. If this was the potential of DCEU, why on earth movies like Justice League, BvS and Suicide Squad even exist? The more I watch films like this, the more I think Snyder was the biggest mistake of DCEU. .
.
Good : Zachary Levi is awesome as the adult version of Billy Batson. He can perfectly play an adult who is actually a teenager. His performance is incredible. He has an amazing chemistry with all the other characters which made the experience really good. The movie is an ultimate fun ride from the top to bottom. There's not a single part which felt boring or uninteresting. The arc given to Billy was quite good and we start to like the characters. The comedic parts deliver at its finest. Director Sandberg has shown versatility in a very good way. I have always thought of him as a very good director. His horror films like Lights Out and Annabelle Creation are directed quite well, the major flaws are in the script, if any. Here, there are no such problems with the script, and he understands very well how a certain part of the story is to be directed. Some parts do have a nice horror movie vibe to it, but it is not tonally inconsistent. It knows what it tries to be, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Even at the times it does, it is for a comedic purpose. It never tries to be an epic film knowing that it's not, unlike BvS. It is sure to put a smile on your face throughout and make you laugh a lot. The final moments are crowd pleasing moments done right. .
.
Mixed : It's not a big problem, but I expected more comedy out of this. What I got was great, but I wanted a lot more of funny stuff. The kid playing teen Billy Batson isn't a bad actor. But some of the times, it felt like him and Levi were a little different with each other. It could've been a little better. .
.
Bad : The villain was a clichéd villain. He wasn't interesting as a character like Thanos, Ledger's Joker or Bane. Mark Strong does a good job, but this is a poorly written villain. .
.
Conclusion : An entertaining superhero film which knows what it is, and is quite campy in a good way. It is not wildly original concept of a film. It has some popular tropes of the genre and has a familiar template for an origin story. But it will definitely keep you entertained till the end, and you will end up liking most of the characters. The best thing is, even if you have never seen a DCEU movie, it won't make a difference. It has little to no reference to the previous DCEU films and is its own thing for the most part. Recommended even to those who are not the fan of the genre. .

The story centers around a young, 14 year old boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is alone, and is searching for his mother ever since they were separated when he was just a young boy. He is then forced to bond with a new foster family after having a reputation for running away numerous times, but decides to finally settle in. His new family is big, many different siblings of various ages and personalities, the one he gets closest to is Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), who is a big fan of superheroes and collects all kinds of special merchandise, even right down to the bullet that Superman himself deflected. Billy struggles at first with his new family and school, but is still motivated to find his mother. We also meet Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who, when he was a child, he encountered the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) and was cast out as he could not resist evil, and was deemed not worthy to possess such great power. He manages to get himself back in and snatch the evil power, and the wizard must find someone truly worthy enough to defeat Sivana. That is where things get interesting for our young Billy, as he also comes across the mysterious temple and is told what he must do, when he says "Shazam!", he turns into a fully grown-up superhero (now played by Zachary Levi), but still has the mind of his own, young self. What really surprised me about this movie was how charming, heartwarming and funny it all is. Directed by David F. Sandberg ('Lights Out' and 'Annabelle: Creation'), the movie's tone is surprisingly light and much different than what he maybe used to. Despite maybe one or two moments when we constantly cut back and forth between Billy and Sivana, it can feel like two different movies, making it tonally uneven, but that's just a small percentage. The movie mainly works because of its youthful spirit. Teenagers always wanted to be a hero, and how Levi plays a 14 year old trapped in a 30 year old's body and his reaction to everything from super strength, to flying, really adds to the movie's joyful quality. The third act also, can get a little too cheesy at times, but maybe that's intentional, overall, this is pretty much 'Big' (1988) meets 'Superman' (1978), also, it does remind me of 'Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse' (2018) and that's a high compliment. It knows the concept is a little silly, it embraces its light spirit, and it has fun with the material, like how most kids have fun when they use some powerful piece of technology. Imagine if you were a kid, and you found out you could fly and have super strength. This movie is a joy to behold. Expand

Recite The Passage.

Shazam!

Sandberg has a huge Christmas-calibered gift coming up at the front of his door. DC striking off its streak of fumbles, may still not yet be at its best self, but is fun enough to heat some more popcorns in the box office. This surprise Summer package takes itself seriously in order to not be taken itself seriously. And this Deadpool version of DC will and does get a wider range for its polished PG-13 lexicon and people pleasing concept that basically hovers around the pop culture references i.e. from earning through social media to heating vein popping debate about comic books.

While on the other hand the themes like foster homes and parenting and responsibilities are carried out, the director, David F. Sandberg who is sticking his neck out in here on weaving a tale of a genre that he has never been part of, is the most delightful package among all the powers the film has got. Probably, because no matter how sketchy things go in the storytelling, Sandberg keeps the film to the ground. He doesn't milk out laughs or emotional scenes with an extra effort, it just comes easy to him.

Another major notable work is how he grasps an authentic reaction before jumping in on to other scene, like when Mark Strong- the baddie- ambushes his father's business meeting and creates a havoc in the room, the energy of that room is set practically which makers often forget to do so in a film where activities like flying is normalized to running. If the first act is introductory and the second just mocks around here and there, the third and the biggest act of all is the best. With a long action sequence, that isn't just a feat of CGI colors but is also a part of gripping narrative.

From characters confronting their past to revelations of each other's powers and weakness and from teaming up against the baddie to a well orchestrated battle, this more than half hour of climax amplifies the film to its peak. Zachary Levi as the sort of dream version in a red sparkly skin tight suit is just as bling as his costume is, of course, in a good way. His shaking comic body language and stuttering before uttering one-liners is just as magnanimous as his inflated arm muscles.

On the other side of the door lies Mark Strong as brooding and growling for his character that gets an equal and powerful arc to walk on or fly, feel free. But these actors that relies upon CGI to pack a punch and are- let's be frank- on most of the posters would never be able to create the jarring impact if not for their brilliant younger supporting cast. Each of the family members are whispering their drama lightly and arguing loudly to draw in the laughs, this diverse family is something we can all connect to. Shazam! is actually the magic word that makes DC and their fans sore, look up high, the expectation has grown.

Having read a bunch of Captain Marvel stories, it was exciting seeing how much stuff they managed to seamlessly fit into the film. The mostly lighthearted tone of the film was great, and they managed to land a fair amount of good jokes, so it was very enjoyable to watch. Though it had just over a two hour runtime, the pacing and entertainment I got out of it made it feel like barely an hour and a half had gone by.

In my eyes, it was both enjoyable as a faithful adaptation of a DC property as well as a film, which is a welcome change given some of the past entries in Warner Brother's expanded universe attempt. I really feel like Warner Brother's is starting to get it right now.

Off their record of consistently bad films, DC Entertainment thinks sincerity means following impulsive actions, a mindset they convey with their newest addition to the extended universe, Billy (AKA, “Shazam”).

This kid enjoys food, not within a family dinner table, but alone at a burger joint to get high on fructose. Any sense of connection between himself and others is so empty, he barely even conveys any apparent thoughts on the fact that his disabled foster brother wants to be him: a big, tough, handsome man with superpowers and no physical ailments. Billy is so distanced from the viewer, that even an inanimate plush tiger has better character development.

Also embracing those McDonald’s carbs, yet somehow perfectly healthy, is Billy’s absent mom, whose barely present subplot conributes nothing to the point where it only distracts from the other conflicts. As much as it tries to uplift the heart of the feature, it does so in all the wrong places. Other elements within the script that would actually benefit from extra screentime don‘t get it, particularly a wizard with an aged hairstyle that marks him as the only controller of mass hysteria.

It’s better to quench thirst with something actually important, more so than anything that happens to the kid actors of this movie. These youngsters are neither good at acting nor playing decent role models; Billy’s first move is him locking up cops to rob their car, and without any real punishment for it after! Meanwhile, a young girl of Billy’s foster home always looks personally unphased by anything, even sights as miraculous as crocodiles with poker chips. This inactive lassie drags the rhythm of each scene down to the point where a recurring, funny Santa earns more attention than the leads.

Then there’s the unintentionally funny prologue to the film, which expects authenticity when one of the passive twerps of that scene grows up into a monologuing bad guy worth being mocked by some kid. He’s not someone to be taken seriously and should have been much grittier to shine a brighter light against the wisecracking protagonist. If this bad guy was jokingly called, “Thundercrack,” or “Captain Sparklefingers,” he would for sure react too softly to be realistic. But hey, at least those two nicknames serve as great modes of successful laughs during Billy’s hilarious discovery of his powers.

Billy doesn’t accept either of those nicknames as a superhero name, nor does he want to live under anyone besides a biological parent. That ambition is not one that anyone of mature mind would want to connect with, particularly seeing how horrible the mother is as seen through flashbacks, even more so than the stupid-looking CGI demons who throw people out of windows. Not even a teenager on a crutch with three months terminal cancer is successful at generating sympathy. As much as director David F. Sandberg utilizes his horror resume, he still flops at directing emotion while trying to modernize old tropes. There’s one point when an FAO Schwartz piano is incorporated into a mall fight, which is funny alright, but doesn’t flow into the intent of giving comic book movies a new edge.

The problem lies in the screenplay’s logic, which is still the exact same as comic books have been since their inception. Heck, this even takes it a step further by saying that Billy was chosen by the wizard because he’s apparently, “pure in heart.” Yeah, right! Why would an overacting jerk who relies on impulses, Frito’s in hand, be “pure in heart?” The same goes to his irksome ol’ sidekick with the crutch, he’s so annoying that it’s honestly satisfying when he gets beaten up by bullies. Surprising that these two hooligans manage to stay thin with all their freedom, it just boils down to the reality that the goal of these filmmakers is not about protecting Philadelphia, it’s about encouraging kids to misbehave while bodybuilding in a bold, classic costume. If we put ourselves in Billy’s place, and were forced to pick between stopping a bank robbery and a chocolate cake, of course the studio would send mind tricks compelling you to lean toward the bad decision.

The DCEU can try, but it will never top Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; the two standards fans hold to what a comic book movie can be. It’s not about the cool suit, it’s about allowing the viewer to think for him/herself about what tactics will truly redeem the city. Although Nolan’s and Sony’s respective versions of the classic vigilantes are certainly flawed, they hold a grail of genuine perfection compared to this electric lightning-bearing assassin.
