Not entirely terrible with some entertaining action set-pieces. But the villains were bland and forgettable, the humor didn't land in most cases, and there wasn't enough of a focus on the main character. There's a strong argument to be made that the entire Shazam family was introduced way too early. It also would've made a lot more sense to pit Shazam against Black Adam, but since that movie also bombed I doubt we'll see that happen anytime soon. Fury of the Gods even tries to sequel-bait and set up other DCU threads, and it's all but certain that none of this will ever come to fruition. Overall it was just an average superhero film that lost the charm of the original. Expand

The failure that this movie has been is incredible.
But hey, maybe this will serve as a lesson for Warner Bros.

As a huge Shazam fan, I went into this movie with the utmost positivity, but my upbeat optimism was dashed by this films lack of focus. None of the events in this movie seemed to flow naturally and everything was just happening off of a conveyor belt. This, coupled with some VERY unthreatening, non-canon, movie exclusive antagonist's, made for an experience that seemed more like filler than anything else. Speaking of the antagonists of this film, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu did an excellent job in their roles as Hespera and Kalypso and were definitely the stand outs, but even their combine powers of brilliant thespianism were no match for the evil that is DCEU's knack for fumbling their films.

There was at least one scene at the end of the movie that was kinda cool, but it really doesn't make up for the rest of the movies inability to "wow" me. This was not what I would call a "worthy sequel" to the first Shazam movie. Not only does it pale in comparison to the original, but it will more than likely dissipate from most peoples memories shortly after they’ve watched it.

It’s just so ugly and mostly unfunny. I think Levi is solid in the role, but the writing is lazy, creating easy ways to get out of situations within a scene. DCEU reboot can’t come soon enough.

I think the premise was really good, but the execution and writing was poor. The fast dialogues (way too fast at time) and forced jokes broke the rhythm a lot. I didn't feel invested in the characters because I didn't have time to do so. The CGI were a bit better then the first movie. But I couldn't help seeing some Green Lantern effects in there. The acting was unequal but that was to be expected. But the movie focus too much on Freddy for my taste, and they gave him hyper fast dialogues, that didn't favour his character. The villains were' I don't know...just there. The music and sounds were ok. I give it 53%. All the personal stuff is briefly skimmed and never truly explored. It's an action movie with barely any intelligible humour and any convincing drama. Expand

And it is also a half-misfortune. Disappointing film that cannot be compared to its predecessor in the slightest. The (old) Hamada-branded DC management had approved these films (and by these I mean Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods), since, according to him, he was betting on them a lot because the result from the test screens had been positive. Well, what to say, fortunately the management has changed because by continuing at this rate we would have remained in the most absolute mediocrity. Calypso wasted and Esphera does what she can with very little available. Jack Grazer true protagonist of the film with Asher Angel not received. Plot that was fine for a 2005 superhero films. The question that now appears more evident is: won't the superhero films formula and movement start to get a little tired? Won't it take some improvement and evolution? Expand

The constant need for humor clouds any attempt at seriousness and only manages to get a touch of drama in its climax that frankly doesn't add up to anything.

The show entertains for the most part, but considering the reboot that's coming, Shazam gives no reason to stick around in the DCEU. A shame.

* Though the first post-credits scene gives a minuscule hint that maybe James Gunn does have him considered for what's to come. But like I said it's minuscule.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

With the end of the DCEU as we know it, audiences did not feel the need to see this in the cinemas. The fact is that Black Adam was supposedly the main antagonist of Shazam, before the Rock decided that this so called villain was supposedly able to stand on his own as a franchise. The end result both films tanked and audiences just didn't turn up for it. Why would they? Sure, it has a pretty good production values, but the whole film's plot was rote and unoriginal; action sequences are so so. Everything was so generic. With all the great non superheroes films released during this film's run, including Creed 3 and John Wick 4, this film didn't stand a chance. Expand

Let's see, the action scenes are not well done except for 1 small scene, the dialogue and characters are pretty boring.
And the plot, the script, and the writing are bad. The only characters I cared about were, pretty much Billy + Shazam(Zachary Levi), Mary, and I guess Freddy even though he was being kicked around by pretty much everyone...the cripple.

This film suffers from too many characters being on screen at the same time. While something like this is possible it is important to use screen time wisely, in the case of this film, they didn't.

I don't want to add spoilers but let me just say they misuse plot armour a lot, there are things in this film that just do not make sense, and don't tell me "but magic".

And finally, something I was waiting to see, god damn Superman to at least help out with the chaos.

Ok Shazam:
VFX: 8/10, nice CGI
Story and Plot: 3/10, Are they good, are they bad, who am I.
Characters: 5/10, Shazam| Billy, Freddy and Mary, to be honest, I think Mary was the most responsible out of all of them, Billy though is still cool, heroes am I, right?

Action: 3/10, Boring stupid action, He is a god, they are all gods, let him throw them down.

Laugh Factor: 3/10, The only time I was laughing was when I was making fun of the film.

4/10, It's below par, even bad MCU films are better than this, Not Wakanda Forever though that movie sucks more than this one.

James Gunn, Boy do you have a plate to fix with the DC universe, I hope by Superman's Name you know what you are doing.

DC just cannot take a break, but at least the Animation is still top-tier. Maybe perhaps get some of the writers of the DC animations onboard to direct and write, I don't know I'm pretty much done with DC and Marvel. You would have thought that by 2023 standards we would have filmmaking nailed.

The teen superhero in an adult body is entertaining throughout. Instead of the dour, stoic heroes we know and love, these guys make jokes at their enemy’s expense. Perhaps a little too immature, but refreshingly human. The performances, though, cannot erase the stink of corporate interference. The pace of the movie is slowed down with each special effects shot. Too bad we’ve seen it all before. Gods on earth? Check. Seen in the Thor movies. Warping reality? Check. Seen it Dr. Strange movies. Dragons? Check. Seen it all over. Throw in a very blatant product placement and this movie is just another film ruined by notes from the studio.

The movie’s pacing is all over the place. These characters have super speed and can fly. So why do we have to wait so long for them to appear on screen? Oh, you wanted to spend 10 minutes showing us the destruction of the city and the deaths of all those people. Here’s a novel idea for a super hero movie: have the hero’s save people. At one point, the big hero talks with his family for five minutes while innocent bystanders are being eaten by monsters. Another heart to heart goes one while the bad guy is politely waiting to restart the big fight. At other times, the heroes zip in and with this Macguffin or that. It all creates a feeling of stuff happening, and not any kind of story. The original Shazam worked so well because the film moved with the characters. This time around, the characters can hardly keep up at times and have to sit around waiting for their cue at other times. The movie also makes some odd choices for kids film. Characters casually throw around the “s” word and we see people effectively die. Yet the big fights are rather bloodless, often comical considering how invulnerable these characters are made out to be. Just commit to PG if you want an all ages crowd. Last note here is the bummer of an end to this movie franchise and the DCEU. The studio should have filmed different post credit scenes. These are just sad. At least we have an actual cameo that ties to the rest of the now dead DCEU.

For the twelfth instalment of DC Extended Universe, the adventures of Shazam continues and this time, he joined by his other family members known as Shazamily to go up against new foes whom they are not originated from the comic books materials.

Two years after the events of the first film, the daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Mirren) and Kalypso (played by Lucy Liu), stole the Wizard’s broken staff in a Greek museum which was broken by Billy Batson/Shazam (Angel and Levi) during his battle with Dr. Sivana. Back in Philadelphia, Billy is now at the age of 18 years old while worry about being kick out of the house due being age out of the foster system. He is trying to keep the Shazamily together but they all growing up and have their own personal interests to lead a normal life especially Mary Bromfield/Lady Shazam, who have not been able to attend college because of superhero duties.

Meanwhile in God Realm of the Daughters of Atlas, the Wizard (played by Djimon Hounsou) who gave Billy his power is revealed to be alive where he is force by Hespera and Kalypso repair his broken staff. The Wizard warn Billy in his dream that the daughters of Atlas are coming for him and his family to regain their lost powers due to the staff broken by him, the barrier between God’s Realm and human world is remove. Billy and family have to get together to defeat the Daughters of Atlas before they wreck havoc of the entire realm.

Having watched the first movie which is definitely great, I felt this movie is quite a letdown. The storyline for this movie is just mediocre and easy to follow but it was not executed well. Nothing interesting or impressive when it come to actions. The villains are boring and generic. Nothing unique about them. It kind of sense though since the villains in this movie are movie exclusive characters that are not from the comic books. I also noticed there is an inconsistency between Billy Batson and his superhero alter ego. Billy behaved like a mature person while in his superhero form, he behaved like a kid as seen in the previous movie. It is as if both are not the same person.

Putting the bad stuffs aside, the CGI in this movie is quite good and nothing too jarring. The family values is portrayed quite well and I actually find it relatable. I am sure some of us have been like what Billy and his family been through except for the superhero part obviously. The heartwarming moments is still great like the previous movie. The entire cast still gave a great performance despite the materials given to them are not great. The is also one superhero showing up in this movie but I will not mention who it is. I assure the face of that superhero is not cover this time.

In the nutshell, the movie is just mediocre and quite a letdown from the first movie. Just do not expect too much from this movie. There is a mid-credits and post-credits scene which the former have characters from another instalment from this franchise make a surprise cameo appearance.
