This sequel adds 5 of his teen friends, who also possess their own powers. Then the titular gods show up to cause havoc, although they're actually goddesses (Helen Mirren & Lucy Liu). The best thing about the original is the humor and this one does offer some amusing moments. Otherwise, the plot is messy, the action is unexciting and the characters aren't interesting. As sequels go, this one prob won't excite even fans of the original. Expand

Is it even part of the new DCU? It didn't help that there was a severe lack of marketing for this film and all the Black Adam controversy. However, I enjoyed the first Shazam and was willing to look past the fact that most likely nothing in this movie is going to lead to anything. So is this a strong sequel or another stinker from DC?

For the most part, I think the actors do a great job in their roles. Zachary Levi is still charming and charismatic as Shazam. One issue in the first film is that adult Billy (Zachary Levi) and young Billy (Asher Angel) didn't feel like the same person as their performance felt inconsistent. Asher, despite having a smaller role this time, does a better job of feeling like the same character by performing closer to Zachary's performance. Helen Mirren plays one of the villains Hespera. I love her serious, no-nonsense and menacing performance which contrasts Shazam. Djimon Hounsou returns as the wizard and he is great as well. I also think the kid actors who returned are still fine as their characters as well. The design of the monsters and the dragon were good and the special effects of them were not terrible which is a plus in a world where bad CG is so common.

Unfortunately, that is all the praise I can give this movie as apart from that, this movie is an absolute letdown. The story lacks any of the heart and emotion from the first film. Instead, we just get a generic story with bland villains who wants to do evil things because they are evil. The villains are meant to be gods but they are underwhelming in everything including powers which are vague and not impressive. They don't feel much of a threat and the evil plan, in the end, doesn't even feel that consequential. It doesn't help that the movie seems to constantly try and make jokes every minute. I thought I was watching a generic Marvel movie. There is also a boring and half-baked romance story with Freddy, Billy's foster brother, that is the main focus of this film. Freddy is somehow more annoying than ever in this film, not the actor's fault, and his romance with Rachel Zegler's character Anne is not believable. On that note, Billy Batson who is meant to be the main character is not a major focus in this film. I was worried after the first movie where they had the whole family receive the Shazam powers. I believe it would make Billy less interesting and less special which is sadly the case. It doesn't help that everyone else with the power is made to seem more competent than Billy with the characters constantly mocking Billy as an idiot. It further doesn't help that they write Billy as a complete idiot which isn't fitting of his character. I also hate the stupid trope where a person wants to be normal and not be a superhero. The second act in this film is incredibly boring with its constant back and forth between the heroes and villains. It doesn't help that there is a lack of action scenes and when there are, they ain't that great. The ending is probably the most insulting part of the film. They pull off the biggest and most random deus ex machina ever.

Overall, what a disappointing sequel. The first movie had a post-credit that could've led to something interesting. Instead, we get random, generic villains with a generic plot and generic characters. We are already in a market oversaturated by superhero movies and another generic movie is not what we need. It also astounds me that we have a Black Adam movie and a Shazam movie within a year that has no connection whatsoever. This film was a creation from the old DC studios and it is further proof that the DC studios need to change. Technically, Shazam can still be brought into the new DCU but I wouldn't be angry if completely rebooted the character as well. Hopefully, the direction that James Gunn takes the DCU is better than whatever this was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They tried but this movie was bad and lazy, acting (and especially the extras) were BAD and there's no character development and the romance between the godess and the disabled kid looks forced and the whole story is cliche and predictable.

And the ending was almost good but the bad acting ruined and that Wonder Woman cameo is dumb and uneccesary and ruined the seriousness of the scene and felt like a lazy way to give the movie a chiche and dumb ''happy ending''. This is why the movie is flopping at theaters, nobody is interested and James Gunn is gonna reboot the DC Universe anyways

The movie has the audacity to have the original Billy Batson in the movie regulated to some basic extra. Its insulting and careless. Have lost just about all faith in DC and Marvel is not far behind. Is it even possible to make a super hero movie about the character and not someones convoluted vision. Expand

I go to see these mediocre superhero movies so you don’t have to. I get a review out of it and you get to spend two hours doing something else, literally anything, it doesn’t matter because it’ll be more fun than Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

So picking up a couple of years from where the first Shazam! left off, Billy Batson and family possess the power of the gods, giving them superhuman abilities. Shazam and family are doing their best to save innocent people from harm and if they cause a bit of destruction along the way well sure it’s not the end of the world. Sure they’re only kids like and they’re trying their best. They were chosen by the wizard after all. But uh oh, here come the daughters of Atlas, enter Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu who are well pissed off because turns out the power of the gods that give the teens their powers was originally stolen from the Titan Atlas by the wizard. So now due to certain events the barrier between the worlds has been broken and here they come to reclaim what is rightfully theirs and now Shazam and family must stop the world from being destroyed etc. etc.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a whole lot of CGI destruction, unfunny jokes and an infuriating manchild. With the first Shazam, Zachary Levi was charming and funny but the same cannot be said for the sequel. He becomes so childishly annoying you’re actually hoping Helen Mirren or Lucy Liu will fry him to pieces just to get him to shut up for five seconds. Yeah, yeah I know he’s a child but you know he’s supposed to be almost 18 now, not eight. The first film had a magical fairy tale quality and lots of heart about it but this sequel is dull, boring and not worth your time.

One of the problems with the conveyor belt of superhero movies being churned out by WB and Disney is more movies with no real danger or peril. Throw in an overall lack of originality and it’s no wonder everyone is feeling the superhero fatigue. Yet fans of superhero movies will always have time for the good movies, we’re just sick and tired of the increasing number of bad movies. Take this one film as an example you’ve got so many things squashed in here that you’ve seen before only better, not only that but there really isn’t any sense the heroes are ever in danger. This happens again and again and I’m at a point now where I’m so bored with these generic superhero movies I need to stop.

Another issue with the Shazam! franchise is due to the DCEU shake down by new management, now with James Gunn running things (not having a go at him, best of luck to him in the new job) but there’s references to things that are dead in the water. So what is the actual point? If it was a good standalone comic book movie then that wouldn’t matter but it’s not because absolutely everything needs to be a tie in with something now, we can’t just have a stripped back comic book movie anymore because god forbid they focus on the actual characters. No, it’s all about destroying the city and a big budget CGI battle scene. Stripped back and/or an original take on comic book movies like Logan or Joker are what cinema audiences want right now because the same thing again and again is boring. Or alternatively if you’re going to go down the road of over the top, packed to the brim with jokes kind of vibe then it will work if it’s actually funny. Sorry lads but an ongoing joke about skittles is an eyerolling moment that takes you right out of the movie and only feels like when you’re watching a youtube video with a random unskippable ad in the middle of it. Frustrating doesn’t cover it.

For anyone wondering, yes there are post credit scenes, two to be exact and no they’re not worth sticking around for, especially the second scene. It was so ridiculous and I’m not even sure they matter anymore, I promise if you wait for them don’t say I didn’t warn you. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is recommended for any fans left of the current DCEU. Though if you’re a fan of the first Shazam! I suggest you lower those expectations.

Not as good as the first movie, which fell like a breath of fresh air, in the genre.
Not as interesting as Black Adam, which had far more to say than anything marvel has ever done.
Fury of the Gods is stale, from the first minute, and feels exactly the same as a dozen or so Marvel movies. The story jumps from point to point, like a check-list, just as screen-time pays a minimum of establishing time to each of the characters in the over-stuffed cast.
From the vastly overqualified actors, cast as villains, to the humour-free jokes, to the constant, inane MacGuffin exposition trying to weave together this complete lack of a film, Shazam might as well be a Disney/Marvel movie.
That's probably considered high praise by the spread-sheet jockie's that forced this out the studio, whilst screaming "make me one of those".
For me, this is about as low as a DC movie can get. Redacted a winning formula from the previous movie, just to turn it into a lesson in me-too-ism.
