This sequel adds 5 of his teen friends, who also possess their own powers. Then the titular gods show up to cause havoc, although they're actually goddesses (Helen Mirren & Lucy Liu). The best thing about the original is the humor and this one does offer some amusing moments. Otherwise, the plot is messy, the action is unexciting and the characters aren't interesting. As sequels go, this one prob won't excite even fans of the original. Expand

Not entirely terrible with some entertaining action set-pieces. But the villains were bland and forgettable, the humor didn't land in most cases, and there wasn't enough of a focus on the main character. There's a strong argument to be made that the entire Shazam family was introduced way too early. It also would've made a lot more sense to pit Shazam against Black Adam, but since that movie also bombed I doubt we'll see that happen anytime soon. Fury of the Gods even tries to sequel-bait and set up other DCU threads, and it's all but certain that none of this will ever come to fruition. Overall it was just an average superhero film that lost the charm of the original. Expand

I think some people are hypocritical when it comes to judging this one too harshly because so many MCU projects that are of the similar quality get praise. Also, this movie came out at the worst time possible when it sort of feels like a last breath of a dead franchise. I feel like this one could have benefited a lot by being longer and expanding on the family themes they tried to hang their emotional side of the movie on. Definitely, in the beginning there was a lack of that, of any character meaningful scenes. It started as a Saturday morning cartoon and ended as if there were 4 films before that established these characters. Expand

The failure that this movie has been is incredible.

As a huge Shazam fan, I went into this movie with the utmost positivity, but my upbeat optimism was dashed by this films lack of focus. None of the events in this movie seemed to flow naturally and everything was just happening off of a conveyor belt. This, coupled with some VERY unthreatening, non-canon, movie exclusive antagonist's, made for an experience that seemed more like filler than anything else. Speaking of the antagonists of this film, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu did an excellent job in their roles as Hespera and Kalypso and were definitely the stand outs, but even their combine powers of brilliant thespianism were no match for the evil that is DCEU's knack for fumbling their films.

There was at least one scene at the end of the movie that was kinda cool, but it really doesn't make up for the rest of the movies inability to "wow" me. This was not what I would call a "worthy sequel" to the first Shazam movie. Not only does it pale in comparison to the original, but it will more than likely dissipate from most peoples memories shortly after they’ve watched it.

It’s just so ugly and mostly unfunny. I think Levi is solid in the role, but the writing is lazy, creating easy ways to get out of situations within a scene. DCEU reboot can’t come soon enough.

I didn't feel invested in the characters because I didn't have time to do so. The CGI were a bit better then the first movie. But I couldn't help seeing some Green Lantern effects in there. The acting was unequal but that was to be expected. But the movie focus too much on Freddy for my taste, and they gave him hyper fast dialogues, that didn't favour his character. Is it even part of the new DCU? It didn't help that there was a severe lack of marketing for this film and all the Black Adam controversy. However, I enjoyed the first Shazam and was willing to look past the fact that most likely nothing in this movie is going to lead to anything. So is this a strong sequel or another stinker from DC?

For the most part, I think the actors do a great job in their roles. Zachary Levi is still charming and charismatic as Shazam. One issue in the first film is that adult Billy (Zachary Levi) and young Billy (Asher Angel) didn't feel like the same person as their performance felt inconsistent. Asher, despite having a smaller role this time, does a better job of feeling like the same character by performing closer to Zachary's performance. Helen Mirren plays one of the villains Hespera. I love her serious, no-nonsense and menacing performance which contrasts Shazam. Djimon Hounsou returns as the wizard and he is great as well. I also think the kid actors who returned are still fine as their characters as well. The design of the monsters and the dragon were good and the special effects of them were not terrible which is a plus in a world where bad CG is so common.

Unfortunately, that is all the praise I can give this movie as apart from that, this movie is an absolute letdown. The story lacks any of the heart and emotion from the first film. Instead, we just get a generic story with bland villains who wants to do evil things because they are evil. The villains are meant to be gods but they are underwhelming in everything including powers which are vague and not impressive. They don't feel much of a threat and the evil plan, in the end, doesn't even feel that consequential. It doesn't help that the movie seems to constantly try and make jokes every minute. I thought I was watching a generic Marvel movie. There is also a boring and half-baked romance story with Freddy, Billy's foster brother, that is the main focus of this film. Freddy is somehow more annoying than ever in this film, not the actor's fault, and his romance with Rachel Zegler's character Anne is not believable. On that note, Billy Batson who is meant to be the main character is not a major focus in this film. I was worried after the first movie where they had the whole family receive the Shazam powers. I believe it would make Billy less interesting and less special which is sadly the case. It doesn't help that everyone else with the power is made to seem more competent than Billy with the characters constantly mocking Billy as an idiot. It further doesn't help that they write Billy as a complete idiot which isn't fitting of his character. I also hate the stupid trope where a person wants to be normal and not be a superhero. The second act in this film is incredibly boring with its constant back and forth between the heroes and villains. It doesn't help that there is a lack of action scenes and when there are, they ain't that great. The ending is probably the most insulting part of the film. They pull off the biggest and most random deus ex machina ever.

Overall, what a disappointing sequel. The first movie had a post-credit that could've led to something interesting. Instead, we get random, generic villains with a generic plot and generic characters. We are already in a market oversaturated by superhero movies and another generic movie is not what we need. It also astounds me that we have a Black Adam movie and a Shazam movie within a year that has no connection whatsoever. This film was a creation from the old DC studios and it is further proof that the DC studios need to change. Technically, Shazam can still be brought into the new DCU but I wouldn't be angry if completely rebooted the character as well. Hopefully, the direction that James Gunn takes the DCU is better than whatever this was.

And the ending was almost good but the bad acting ruined and that Wonder Woman cameo is dumb and uneccesary and ruined the seriousness of the scene and felt like a lazy way to give the movie a chiche and dumb ''happy ending''. This is why the movie is flopping at theaters, nobody is interested and James Gunn is gonna reboot the DC Universe anyways

And it is also a half-misfortune. Disappointing film that cannot be compared to its predecessor in the slightest. The (old) Hamada-branded DC management had approved these films (and by these I mean Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods), since, according to him, he was betting on them a lot because the result from the test screens had been positive. Well, what to say, fortunately the management has changed because by continuing at this rate we would have remained in the most absolute mediocrity. Calypso wasted and Esphera does what she can with very little available. Jack Grazer true protagonist of the film with Asher Angel not received. Plot that was fine for a 2005 superhero films. The question that now appears more evident is: won't the superhero films formula and movement start to get a little tired? Won't it take some improvement and evolution? Expand

The constant need for humor clouds any attempt at seriousness and only manages to get a touch of drama in its climax that frankly doesn't add up to anything.

The show entertains for the most part, but considering the reboot that's coming, Shazam gives no reason to stick around in the DCEU. A shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I go to see these mediocre superhero movies so you don’t have to. I get a review out of it and you get to spend two hours doing something else, literally anything, it doesn’t matter because it’ll be more fun than Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

So picking up a couple of years from where the first Shazam! left off, Billy Batson and family possess the power of the gods, giving them superhuman abilities. Shazam and family are doing their best to save innocent people from harm and if they cause a bit of destruction along the way well sure it’s not the end of the world. Sure they’re only kids like and they’re trying their best. They were chosen by the wizard after all. But uh oh, here come the daughters of Atlas, enter Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu who are well pissed off because turns out the power of the gods that give the teens their powers was originally stolen from the Titan Atlas by the wizard. So now due to certain events the barrier between the worlds has been broken and here they come to reclaim what is rightfully theirs and now Shazam and family must stop the world from being destroyed etc. etc.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a whole lot of CGI destruction, unfunny jokes and an infuriating manchild. With the first Shazam, Zachary Levi was charming and funny but the same cannot be said for the sequel. He becomes so childishly annoying you’re actually hoping Helen Mirren or Lucy Liu will fry him to pieces just to get him to shut up for five seconds. Yeah, yeah I know he’s a child but you know he’s supposed to be almost 18 now, not eight. The first film had a magical fairy tale quality and lots of heart about it but this sequel is dull, boring and not worth your time.

One of the problems with the conveyor belt of superhero movies being churned out by WB and Disney is more movies with no real danger or peril. Throw in an overall lack of originality and it’s no wonder everyone is feeling the superhero fatigue. Yet fans of superhero movies will always have time for the good movies, we’re just sick and tired of the increasing number of bad movies. Take this one film as an example you’ve got so many things squashed in here that you’ve seen before only better, not only that but there really isn’t any sense the heroes are ever in danger. This happens again and again and I’m at a point now where I’m so bored with these generic superhero movies I need to stop.

Another issue with the Shazam! franchise is due to the DCEU shake down by new management, now with James Gunn running things (not having a go at him, best of luck to him in the new job) but there’s references to things that are dead in the water. So what is the actual point? If it was a good standalone comic book movie then that wouldn’t matter but it’s not because absolutely everything needs to be a tie in with something now, we can’t just have a stripped back comic book movie anymore because god forbid they focus on the actual characters. No, it’s all about destroying the city and a big budget CGI battle scene. Stripped back and/or an original take on comic book movies like Logan or Joker are what cinema audiences want right now because the same thing again and again is boring. Or alternatively if you’re going to go down the road of over the top, packed to the brim with jokes kind of vibe then it will work if it’s actually funny. Sorry lads but an ongoing joke about skittles is an eyerolling moment that takes you right out of the movie and only feels like when you’re watching a youtube video with a random unskippable ad in the middle of it. Frustrating doesn’t cover it.

For anyone wondering, yes there are post credit scenes, two to be exact and no they’re not worth sticking around for, especially the second scene. It was so ridiculous and I’m not even sure they matter anymore, I promise if you wait for them don’t say I didn’t warn you. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is recommended for any fans left of the current DCEU. Though if you’re a fan of the first Shazam! I suggest you lower those expectations.

I am not blaming anybody but the movie really lacked the dark tone a nemesis that the first one had leading onto this movie. With the end of the DCEU as we know it, audiences did not feel the need to see this in the cinemas. The fact is that Black Adam was supposedly the main antagonist of Shazam, before the Rock decided that this so called villain was supposedly able to stand on his own as a franchise. The end result both films tanked and audiences just didn't turn up for it. Why would they? Sure, it has a pretty good production values, but the whole film's plot was rote and unoriginal; action sequences are so so. Everything was so generic. With all the great non superheroes films released during this film's run, including Creed 3 and John Wick 4, this film didn't stand a chance. Expand

Not as good as the first movie, which fell like a breath of fresh air, in the genre.
Not as interesting as Black Adam, which had far more to say than anything marvel has ever done.
Fury of the Gods is stale, from the first minute, and feels exactly the same as a dozen or so Marvel movies. The story jumps from point to point, like a check-list, just as screen-time pays a minimum of establishing time to each of the characters in the over-stuffed cast.
From the vastly overqualified actors, cast as villains, to the humour-free jokes, to the constant, inane MacGuffin exposition trying to weave together this complete lack of a film, Shazam might as well be a Disney/Marvel movie.
That's probably considered high praise by the spread-sheet jockie's that forced this out the studio, whilst screaming "make me one of those".
For me, this is about as low as a DC movie can get. Redacted a winning formula from the previous movie, just to turn it into a lesson in me-too-ism.

The characters are funny and expressive, The villains are well written and actually interesting and the music is amazing and fits the scenes. The pacing is also really good and it never gets slow. The movie has actual funny jokes that hit well and aren’t over done.

One of my complaints is that the ending is a bit of a cop out and it could have been done a bit better. Also some scenes go on for slightly too long although not TOO long imo

Also the CGI is amazing.

Could be a 9.5 if the certain scenes were shorter and the ending was slightly altered.

Fury of the Gods, but luckily it actually kinda worked. While definitely not as good as SHAZAM!, this was still such a fun movie. The characters were as likable and fun as ever, the comedy landed a lot and the action and visual effects, while not groundbreaking, was as good as it needed to be. Zachary Levi was also acting way too childish, especially compared to when he was a normal teen as Billy. I thought this would falter at first, and the low critic score didn't get me more hopeful. I love to be wrong thought, as SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods is a fun movie that losses a lot of charm from the first one, but is still a good time that I would recommend. This didn't deserve a lower box office then Morbius. Expand

Let's see, the action scenes are not well done except for 1 small scene, the dialogue and characters are pretty boring.
And the plot, the script, and the writing are bad. The only characters I cared about were, pretty much Billy + Shazam(Zachary Levi), Mary, and I guess Freddy even though he was being kicked around by pretty much everyone...the cripple.

This film suffers from too many characters being on screen at the same time. While something like this is possible it is important to use screen time wisely, in the case of this film, they didn't.

I don't want to add spoilers but let me just say they misuse plot armour a lot, there are things in this film that just do not make sense, and don't tell me "but magic".

And finally, something I was waiting to see, god damn Superman to at least help out with the chaos.

Ok Shazam:
VFX: 8/10, nice CGI
Story and Plot: 3/10, Are they good, are they bad, who am I.
Characters: 5/10, Shazam| Billy, Freddy and Mary, to be honest, I think Mary was the most responsible out of all of them, Billy though is still cool, heroes am I, right?

Action: 3/10, Boring stupid action, He is a god, they are all gods, let him throw them down.

Laugh Factor: 3/10, The only time I was laughing was when I was making fun of the film.

4/10, It's below par, even bad MCU films are better than this, Not Wakanda Forever though that movie sucks more than this one.

James Gunn, Boy do you have a plate to fix with the DC universe, I hope by Superman's Name you know what you are doing.

DC just cannot take a break, but at least the Animation is still top-tier. Maybe perhaps get some of the writers of the DC animations onboard to direct and write, I don't know I'm pretty much done with DC and Marvel. You would have thought that by 2023 standards we would have filmmaking nailed.

Another movie with at least eight director-level collaborators: a 2nd unit director plus seven VFX directors one for each house working pre, post and during production. When so many people who love telling stories well collaborate, the result is almost always impressive on multiple levels. As regularly happens in pro reviews of most super hero movies, the Great Expectations pattern takes over. The final movie is criticized for what it is not; and, for what it could have been. This is the fast way to become a jaded and cynical movie reviewer. I recommend finding the moments which do work for you, try to ignore the rest on first viewing. As the negative pro reviews observe, Shazam 2 is very much a movie with a 2010 mindset, perseverating on familiar tropes which ran out of oomph a decade or more ago. I did not find Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu "bland." I did find the stereotyped limitations of their roles and dialog very 1990s. The most literate, considered pro reviews on S2 Ive seems so far are from Owen Gleiberman in Variety and Jacob Oller at Paste. Expand

The teen superhero in an adult body is entertaining throughout. Instead of the dour, stoic heroes we know and love, these guys make jokes at their enemy’s expense. Perhaps a little too immature, but refreshingly human. The performances, though, cannot erase the stink of corporate interference. The pace of the movie is slowed down with each special effects shot. Too bad we’ve seen it all before. Gods on earth? Check. Seen in the Thor movies. Warping reality? Check. Seen it Dr. Strange movies. Dragons? Check. Seen it all over. Throw in a very blatant product placement and this movie is just another film ruined by notes from the studio.

The movie’s pacing is all over the place. These characters have super speed and can fly. So why do we have to wait so long for them to appear on screen? Oh, you wanted to spend 10 minutes showing us the destruction of the city and the deaths of all those people. Here’s a novel idea for a super hero movie: have the hero’s save people. At one point, the big hero talks with his family for five minutes while innocent bystanders are being eaten by monsters. Another heart to heart goes one while the bad guy is politely waiting to restart the big fight. At other times, the heroes zip in and with this Macguffin or that. It all creates a feeling of stuff happening, and not any kind of story. The original Shazam worked so well because the film moved with the characters. This time around, the characters can hardly keep up at times and have to sit around waiting for their cue at other times. The movie also makes some odd choices for kids film. Characters casually throw around the “s” word and we see people effectively die. Yet the big fights are rather bloodless, often comical considering how invulnerable these characters are made out to be. Just commit to PG if you want an all ages crowd. Last note here is the bummer of an end to this movie franchise and the DCEU. The studio should have filmed different post credit scenes. These are just sad. At least we have an actual cameo that ties to the rest of the now dead DCEU.

I don't think it's that bad, but I do think it's the most strange and the most confusing D-SHE-E-U Movie.

It's a shame almost no one saw this movie and I was waiting for it to come out and saw ZERO advertising anywhere. I really regret not seeing this in theatres; almost a perfect movie in so many ways. Really a shame we might not get more of this incarnation of Shazam n' Fam. I don't know how so many critics got it wrong but as you can see by the 86% audience score on rotten tomatoes it clearly was a hit with the fans who actually did know it was coming out and managed to see it in theatres. I really hope we get another film or two or three from this series. Expand

A sequência inconsequente foi um grande fracasso para a DC e isso é o óbvio.

Overly convoluted and messy story telling. The ending was good but it required quite a bit of meandering to get there. It was overly complicated.

For the twelfth instalment of DC Extended Universe, the adventures of Shazam continues and this time, he joined by his other family members known as Shazamily to go up against new foes whom they are not originated from the comic books materials.

Two years after the events of the first film, the daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Mirren) and Kalypso (played by Lucy Liu), stole the Wizard’s broken staff in a Greek museum which was broken by Billy Batson/Shazam (Angel and Levi) during his battle with Dr. Sivana. Back in Philadelphia, Billy is now at the age of 18 years old while worry about being kick out of the house due being age out of the foster system. He is trying to keep the Shazamily together but they all growing up and have their own personal interests to lead a normal life especially Mary Bromfield/Lady Shazam, who have not been able to attend college because of superhero duties.

Meanwhile in God Realm of the Daughters of Atlas, the Wizard (played by Djimon Hounsou) who gave Billy his power is revealed to be alive where he is force by Hespera and Kalypso repair his broken staff. The Wizard warn Billy in his dream that the daughters of Atlas are coming for him and his family to regain their lost powers due to the staff broken by him, the barrier between God’s Realm and human world is remove. Billy and family have to get together to defeat the Daughters of Atlas before they wreck havoc of the entire realm.

Having watched the first movie which is definitely great, I felt this movie is quite a letdown. The storyline for this movie is just mediocre and easy to follow but it was not executed well. Nothing interesting or impressive when it come to actions. The villains are boring and generic. Nothing unique about them. It kind of sense though since the villains in this movie are movie exclusive characters that are not from the comic books. I also noticed there is an inconsistency between Billy Batson and his superhero alter ego. Billy behaved like a mature person while in his superhero form, he behaved like a kid as seen in the previous movie. It is as if both are not the same person.

Putting the bad stuffs aside, the CGI in this movie is quite good and nothing too jarring. The family values is portrayed quite well and I actually find it relatable. I am sure some of us have been like what Billy and his family been through except for the superhero part obviously. The heartwarming moments is still great like the previous movie. The entire cast still gave a great performance despite the materials given to them are not great. The is also one superhero showing up in this movie but I will not mention who it is. I assure the face of that superhero is not cover this time.

In the nutshell, the movie is just mediocre and quite a letdown from the first movie. Just do not expect too much from this movie. There is a mid-credits and post-credits scene which the former have characters from another instalment from this franchise make a surprise cameo appearance.

O bogowie. Pomysły miejscami dobre ale ich wykonanie niestety już niezbyt. Ktoś nie wiedział o czym zrobić kolejnego Shazama więc dali wszystko i nic zarazem
