Ready player one is an action movie which has a simple, interesting and fun storyline. Movie is not perfect and not worst. The best thing is in the movie is the characters from games, movie and books. If you have knowledge about movies,Ready player one is an action movie which has a simple, interesting and fun storyline. While watching movie my eyes didn't stop searching characters and references in the movie , just like that didn't stop saying that 'Look it is tracer from overwatch, look it is batman from dc comics, look it is iron giant , look iron giant made reference to terminator 2' and etc. Movie doesn't have colorful characters (except Halliday aka Anorak) and doesn't have very interesting storyline. CGI is good, it doesn't disturb me( at least it is not Justice league). Simple, normal movie for just have fun and do something when you don't know what to do for waste your time.… Expand

When James Halliday (Mark Rylance), the creator of the OASIS dies, he offers the players around the world the chance to inherit his massive fortune and his company only if they can find a hidden "Easter Egg" along with three keys needed to unlock it. Now, a young "gunter" (someone that's dedicated to finding the keys and the egg) named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) and his brave companions consisting of the beautiful Arti3mis (Olivia Cooke), his best friend Aech (Lena Waithe), and the brothers Daito (Win Morisaki) and Sho (Philip Zao) must find these items before the ruthless IOI corporation led by the sinister Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), can use the egg to privatize Halliday's virtual paradise...

Taking direct influence from the likes of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Matrix and Wreck-it Ralph, Steven Spielberg's loose adaptation of the 2011 80's pop culture love letter novel Ready Player One, is a wonderful throwback to the veteran director's Golden Age throughout the 1980's where he both produced and directed some of the most iconic fantasy/sci-fi films in the history of cinema such as Back to the Future, E.T and the Indiana Jones films.

Going into it's problems in which aside from some questionable overuse of dark blue tones in the color grading which makes it impossible to see the numerous cameos from the heavily advertised pop culture icons such as The Iron Giant, Gandalf and numerous others, The story takes huge liberties with the book's more intense tone and the pacing especially during the first act. goes by far too quickly for the world of the OASIS to be properly set-up for anyone new to this material or towards 80's to 90's pop culture as well.

However, Spielberg's first fantasy film since 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, does have it's heart in the right place in conveying the joy of escapism and creativity and unlike The Matrix's insistence that living in a fictional world is bad,no matter how bad the real world is, Ready Player One on the othe hand, in a similar method in how Hook told audiences that imagination and fun is important even if you're an adult, tells us that maybe spending time in a better world is not so bad after all.

Overall, Ready Player One while not rising to the levels of Spielberg's other films, much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? before it, is a wonderful love letter to geek culture and the fantasy genre of the last few decades that proves that one of the longest surviving "Hollywood" brats can still provide solid family entertainment after all these years.… Expand

It's pretty much exactly what you would expect from Steven Spielberg in terms of theme and tone. Nostalgia abounds in this exciting adventure flick. A cool premise can only take a film so far. At first glance, Ready Player One has all the potential to be a franchise-starting movie with its large-scale world building and plethora of pop culture references. At first glance, Ready Player One has all the potential to be a franchise-starting movie with its large-scale world building and plethora of pop culture references. Unfortunately, Steven Spielberg’s newest work falls a bit flat due to a multitude of shortcomings in key aspects of the film. The most glaring issues are in a script, which feels like common fanfiction centered around a forgettable protagonist. Meanwhile, the direction, production design & editing of Ready Player One are all satisfactorily executed but with enough inattention that the experience sometimes feels like an afterthought.

The famous Spielberg touch does show up at the tail end of Ready Player One but, at that point, it feels almost jarring. This inconsistent vision is a huge detriment to a movie based around such a stylish premise. Ultimately, there are enough cool moments and adequate techniques that should have most viewers calling Ready Player One passable. However, its unfocused and generic vibe will leave many audience members feeling sneaking disappointment.

A largely enjoyed film which will go down as a Spielberg classic! This was something new and refreshing, and became something I thought was childish, to something that made me think about the future. Maybe this could happen someday, eh? 7/10.

Es una buena película, con un increíble apartado técnico en el mundo virtual pero que deja un poco que desear en el mundo real. Es divertida, entretenida, frenética, y funciona muy bien como película palomitera.

Peeero, siento que ha sido muy desaprovechada. Spielberg tenía miles de millones de cartas a su favor para convertir Ready Player One en un hito en la historia del cine de ciencia ficción como lo fué en su día Blade Runner y todo lo que este nombre engloba. Hay veces que la cinta tira mucho por el camino de no tomar las cosas en serio y reducir toda su trama a un simple juego. Oasis no debería haber sido definido como un MMO que simplemente ha arrasado en todo el mundo y es el pasatiempo y vicio preferido de toda la población y el interés de toda la industria del sector. En su lugar, yo la hubiera definido como un sitio en el que relajarse del estrés del mundo real: un lugar donde las personas pudieran ser quienes quisieran en el sentido más utópico posible y no simples avatares de 'Tracer', 'Chun Li' o 'Spartans' de la saga Halo para conseguir un par de monedas y ser más poderosos dentro del videojuego. He re remarcar que no he leído el o los libros originales en los que se basó el director a la hora de hacer esta película, pero estoy seguro de que difieren bastante de lo que nos ha sido mostrado en la gran pantalla. En fin, es una buena película con altas dosis de acción y adrenalina con unos personajes pasables que se deja ver y disfrutar, pero creo que podría haber sido un completo punto de inflexión y realizada como una Blade Runner de los tiempos modernos. É difícil assistir esse filme sem ter em mente de que há 10 anos, anda disso era possível.

O longa trabalha com das realidades, uma virtual - cujo é a principal -, e outra na qual estamos mais "habituados". Elas intercalam bem, e o clímax é um bom exemplo disso. A CGI é fora do normal, podendo pôr em prática todas as ambições artísticas da direção de arte como um todo. também convence muito bem com as expressões faciais, destruições, e o trabalho feito com as cores está redundante em HDR. O figurino tá sensacional, assim como a caracterização de todos os personagens.

A trama também é muito bem fundamentada. Nada além da conta pro proposito do longa, o que não me incomodou em nenhum momento. Os personagens são bons, com características que acrescentam no plot e personalidades criveis, apesar de um ou outro dialogo expositivo que tenha me incomodado um pouco.

De forma geral, Ready Player One é ambicioso, épico e um dos, senão o maior, crossover da historia. O filme como um todo é uma homenagem a cultura pop, o que é simplesmente "breathtaking" pra quem acompanha esse universo desde criança.

I liked the movie and was impressed by it when I saw it. Then I decided to read the novel and I discovered that the movie was really a not bad/not great adaption of a novel that's an 80's nerd masterpiece. First things first -- it's kind of fun and there's thrills to be had and all that. It drags at times and is manic but hey aren't most expensive tentpoles nowadays.

This movie somehow was able to take highly advanced virtual reality combined with an insane amount of pop culture nostalgia reverence and manage to put those things in a dystopia!, revel in it a bit (like we all do), and then somehow refuse to make any kind of meta-commentary on what that means for contemporary society or modern film/art/etc. I mean, turn off the video games for 2 days a week and meet a girl? That's all we get?

I really hated the 2nd sequence. Not homage, not fun, not clever, just perversely misguided and completely ruining a masterpiece that deserves to be seen on its own terms for new generations. I can't believe Spielberg would do that to a friend...

It's so blatant it almost feels intentional. At least with the book you put it off as bad writing by an author clearly unaware of the implications of his premise but more than ready to treat it as pseudo-paradise unironically. I have no idea what Spielberg wanted to do with this. "Look on my works ye mighty and despair!" I guess?… Expand

Not a love letter to the '80s or a celebration of all things pop culture. Nor is it another escapism classic from Steven Spielberg. Basically none of the things we were all told it was going to be. Instead, Ready Player One is a gaudyNot a love letter to the '80s or a celebration of all things pop culture. Nor is it another escapism classic from Steven Spielberg. Basically none of the things we were all told it was going to be. Instead, Ready Player One is a gaudy CGI-fest with nonexistent characters. The perfect example of what is wrong with so much of modern cinema. It's not devoid of joy though. Spielberg still manages to put on a decent show no matter how overblown.


The movie is filled with Easter eggs. Good luck seeing any of them though. Even the most eagle-eyed of viewers will have a hard time picking out all of the references and cameos amongst the constant movement and visual clutter. I can only think of about three properties that were handled with any sort of love anyways (Chucky, The Shining, and Back to the Future in case you were wondering). The rest of the inclusions feel shallow and devoid of affection.


There's so much happening onscreen that it often devolves into visual noise. The movie is at it's best when it slows down and focuses on the story. I really dug the core premise of players trying to complete secret challenges to win a once and a lifetime prize. There are some really cool sequences that result from this. The battle against the evil corporation is nowhere near as interesting though thanks to some truly terrible characterization. We spend so much time looking at CGI avatars that I often found myself forgetting there were real people just on the other side. Even when we do get to look at some human faces the material they are given is so weak that the actors aren't able to have any kind of impact or presence. They have the makings of backstories, but these only ever come up once and very briefly at that. So things like the main character's loss of parents and occasional abuse from whatever loser his aunt is dating at the time do nothing to make us sympathize with and root for him. It's too shallow and cliché anyways. The rest of the cast fares much worse.


Whatever message the story is trying to get across ends up lost in translation. If this is really supposed to be about valuing real life then shouldn't more of the movie taken place there rather than almost entirely inside the game? I liked how Spielberg used the game's creator to sort of parallel himself and express how all creators will have a piece of themselves living on inside of their creations, but admittedly not much is happening there either. Ready Player One is much better as a critique of the current state of the video game industry with it's subtle jabs at things like microtransactions and IAPs.


I know it must sound like I hate this given all of the negative stuff I've had to say up to this point, but let me assure you that I don't. There are most certainly elements that I enjoyed. Such as the Overlook Hotel sequence which is both genuinely thrilling and a wonderful homage to one of the most celebrated horror films of all time. It's also a technical marvel. T.J. Miller, who I usually can't stand outside of Silicon Valley, is quite amusing here. Although his character contributes nothing to the overall story. I loved seeing that Master of None's Lena Waithe got a role in the film. Hopefully this will serve as a launching point for her into bigger and better things.


Make no mistake, Ready Player One is highly flawed, lacking in the narrative chops that will allow viewers to engage with anything other than the gargantuan visuals, and I'm likely never going to watch it again. The Willy Wonka with a VR-gaming angle type plot keeps things entertaining even at it's most excessive, but the depth we normally get from Spielberg films just isn't there.… Expand

I mean you probably have to do some changes when you create an adaptation of a book for a movie. But THIS one is not done right. At all.

The movie could probably be liked by those who didn't read the book, just for effects maybe? I dunno… I literally had a "WTF??" blurb over my head from the very beginning to the very end of this kinda nice-looking, but still pretty much disaster of an adaptation of a fantastic, great, insightful book. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's pulpy. It's fun as heck. It's forgettable. It's got a lot of eye candy. It's about as good as it could have been given the source material, but it's also kind of a wasted opportunity. I'll probably never see it again, but in terms of spectacle, it didn't disappoint.

"Ready Player One" feels like the whole thing was market tested specifically to appeal to me, with Halliday (an excellent performance as always from Mark Rylance) rocking a Rush 2112 poster, the magic words from Excalibur, the Iron Giant, the DeLorean, etc... This film **** the modern obsession with pop culture, gaming, and escaping into fantasy worlds, and shows a bit of the result of where that attitude will eventually take humanity, but the happy ending feels unearned, because the screenwriters and filmmakers fail to make us really care about the characters, or, in lieu of that, provide a meta-narrative with thematic/mythological depth. It just flows like a series of events in a hero's journey, and Wade Watts' power crawl is constant and uninterrupted.

Technically, the film is a visual triumph. You do believe in the OASIS, though due to budget issues, many of the licensed properties seen in the book don't appear in the film (what's here is great, though). Easter Eggs abound within the film and surely eagle-eyed viewers will find much to like in terms of pointing out their favorite properties. The "Shining" detour for the second egg stands out as an obvious highlight. It's easy to imagine certain nerds turning giddy with excitement. If only the film paid as much attention to its script or character development, it might have been a cult classic. As it is, it's a mile wide and a foot deep.

The performances are fine, but the script is mostly forgettable. You know there's a problem when one of the best lines involves I-Rok quoting the Tootsie Roll pop commercial.

As much as I love Mr. Spielberg and think he nails all the set pieces (as he should), I kind of wish a younger filmmaker, or perhaps with more energy, had been given this property.… Expand

However, I feel that the backlash has gotten to the point where the most common criticism is how much pandering it goes to fan culture and how much references it does have. Yes, there is a ton of references, however it is either left in the background or used to progress the plot. The movie never stops to just reference something like a really lazy joke in Family Guy. The only time it does come to a halt is the amazing homage to the Shining. While the visuals are indeed spectacular the way Spielberg recreated the famous movie and it is vital to the plot, there is a point where one of the characters explore the Overlook Hotel and the movie comes to a halt to show off how cool the visuals are.

Speaking of the visuals, they are indeed spectacular. While people complain at how unrealistic they are, people forget that it takes place in a video game, and while video games can only go so far in replicating the physical world. So while inside the Oasis it is not realistic like the real world it does fit with the narrative. And they are in fact impressive. The action sequences are fantastic, no small part to Spielberg's mastery of scene blocking and action set pieces and the worlds and environments are creative. It really does make you want to be in the Oasis. Which is definitely true when compared to the real world of the movie, which does in fact look fake and like a set. Which is honestly a shame.

The acting is good all around, with one exception. Olivia Cooke is fantastic as Art3mas, Ben Mendelson has a blast playing the villain, and more than makes up for his weak character, Lena Waithe does a great job as Aech (although it is clear that she is a girl instead of a guy), American Simon Pegg is weird but he does a decent job, and Mark Rylance does a great job as Halliday. The only real weak link is the lead, Tye Sheridan. He's not flat out terrible as he does a serviceable job, however he comes off as stiff and awkward when his character is meant to be awkward in a lovable way.

The biggest problem with the film is the script. Not just because the third act is bloated, but that it is rather shallow. For one, with the possible exception of Wade (keyword being possible), the characters do not grow and instead are stuck in their flat archetypes. Sorrento is a generic, cartoonish CEO bad guy, Art3mas is a stock female empowerment love interest, Aech is a bland side character, and there is no real point in having Sho or Daito in the movie despite them being in the book, nor Wade's aunt and her abusive boyfriend. Wade does grow, but he's just a bland hero (although that can largely be blamed by Sheridan's performance). The dialogue is also cringe-enducing, especially when the characters talk about how much Halliday is a God and how over serious they tend to talk. The message is also shallow. It is clear that Spielberg wants to talk about escapism and technological overload, however they often come off as shallow and basic, especially when intertwined by the "small guy overthrows a giant business" plot that has been done to death. The only real positive that can be said is that there is no dull moment with the script, making the 2 hours and 20 minutes fly by rather seamlessly.

I am conflicted with this movie. One on hand it is a fun ride with some great visuals and action scenes that is more like comfort food, but on the other it is an extremely shallow film that doesn't offer up anything new and feels more like a safe film for Spielberg (although he did not foam it in). It's hard not to want more with the movie, but at the same time what was there was fine enough that I can come back to it. But again, there could have been much more with the film.

EDIT: I bumped my rating down from a 7/10 to a 6/10… Expand

I haven't read the book. I'm a huge nerd and 80s/90s fan and I love Stranger Things (80s callbacks). All the references and nods in the movie got tiring by about halfway through, I thought. The movie has good effects and some cool action scenes so it's entertaining enough but it never goes further than that because it plays it so safe.

What I don't understand is why there are so many critics and users giving video game movies bad rep because they are close to the source material (ie feels like a game) though I don't think I've seen another movie resembling a video game as much as this and it has quite a high score (no pun)? Is it because the name of the director, purely? Cause what this movie contains is as many references and easter eggs as there are stars in the sky and the story is as basic and "ticking the boxes" as it gets. It makes sure it doesn't step on any toes anywhere in the world and it doesn't dare to go outside the box. It's a shame because it could've been so much more!… Expand

I haven't read the novel although I don't think it's necessary, after all we're talking about a movie, but it does makes me wonder, where's the story? What's the story?What's the whole point of it? Friendship? Ambition and corporate greed? Love? Technological slavery? Nostalgia?
In reality, it's never clear and all those elements are inside the film and yet nothing fits. All the pieces of the puzzle seem to be forced into the holes and they don't fit correctly.

Personally I must say, Ready Player One is the ultimate geek dream, many visual and musical references, it's indeed a big tribute to pop culture, nostalgia and video games but in the end it doesn't stop feeling empty. It's an intrepid, exciting and joyful show, but empty at the end of it all. The ending makes it very clear, because the big conflict, the big espectacle happens inside the virtual world so when you get back to reality, I was like, 'that's it?''

I'm disappointed because Ready Player One didn't offer me more than a 140-minute audiovisual trip that although its purpose is just to entertain, well I'm more of a fan of substance.

You will have a good time, I will not deny it, but it's like an attraction of an amusement park, you will forget about it as soon as the trip ends.… Expand

Compared to the book, the movie skips too much in too many areas:

What is great are the visuals, music and action sequences.
Overall: if you want visually stunning, fast paced entertainment without a deep plot I can recommend this. If you want interesting and fairly realistic sci-fi with lots of references to 80s gaming and pop culture, then read the book (highly recommended). But if you're looking for a good book adaptation, then this movie is a nice try, but too shallow - there's a high chance you'll end up disappointed.… Expand

The feature demands attention through highly configured rich details on visual asthetics which is admirable, for despite of having such a large range on the material the makers keep it clean (like coins are used instead of blood when someone is eliminated) and pleasing to the audience. But unfortunately the idea isn't intriguing enough to invest in it, in the first place for it seems like a compilation of different borrowed concepts that may look amazing but feels a bit eerie. Steven Speilberg saves the feature through his brilliant execution skills and projecting the anticipated vision on screen. On performance level, there isn't much range provided to the characters in the plot to express thoroughly but still Taylor Sheridan and Olivia Cooke are convincing and is supported by a great cast like Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg. Ready Player One takes its time in its first act and settles in perfectly before the second act kicks in where everything goes predictable but some throwbacks on old classic features (the quest for the second key is quite amusing) holds you on the seat only to mesmerize you in its third act where the plot enfolds in each phase with some brilliant action sequences and good old drama.… Expand

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Ready Player One. There's also Parzival's optimistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from the video game series Final Fantasy, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Ready Player One truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Parzival's existential catchphrase "You're full of feces" which itself is a cryptic reference to Activision's video game epic Call Of Duty. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Steven Spielberg's genius unfolds itself on their theater screens. What fools... how I pity them.… Expand

A guy creates this virtual world where everybody goes to avoid the real world, he eventually grows old and dies but creates a contest where the winner gets to run his company and control of the fantasy world he created. The visual effects are amazing and this film was made for 3-D. Performances are ok. Not the best Spielberg film but not the worst.… Expand

But i wished it did more with the racing part. The first "mission" was really clever with the racing backwards stuff. But the rest? Meh. The second act in particular is not very fun to watch. Just seeing all these recognizable characters on screen all at once is great to have! I could rewatch this movie 5 times and still not catch them all! The animation was really well-done, but the live-action segments felt very dull in comparison. The comedy was hit or miss, but the action was thrilling! If you love pop culture, you’ll find at least some enjoyment in this movie. There is something for everyone here. As a whole, the movie is only okay, but I think that fact alone makes it one of the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made! The fact that director Steven Spielberg was able to make a decent movie out of a book where half of it was just the author listing things that he likes is AMAZING!! It’s worth a watch! Wreck-It Ralph and Scott Pilgrim vs The World are better, though.… Expand

Putting aside my book bias and evaluating the movie on its own merits, it's simply mediocre and forgettable. The world building is limited to the first 5 minutes of the film where Wade (aka Parzival) narrates an introduction to the viewers.Putting aside my book bias and evaluating the movie on its own merits, it's simply mediocre and forgettable. The world building is limited to the first 5 minutes of the film where Wade (aka Parzival) narrates an introduction to the viewers. It doesn't adequately explain WHY the real world has become so lousy that everyone wants to escape to the OASIS, merely that the OASIS has become the preferred escapism drug of the masses. No attempt is made to tie in the constant 80's references, leaving the viewer to wonder why kids in 2045 would give a damn about John Hughes or Twisted Sister. All we're really told is that the real world sucks, everyone loves the OASIS, and that if the Big Bad™ IOI and Sorrento win the late James Halladay's easter egg hunt the OASIS will become as lousy as the real world. So players like Wade and his best friend Aech are on a quest to win the hunt and save the OASIS from IOI's corporate oppression.

Literally a few minutes later, we're introduced to Art3mis and the movie shifts entirely in tone. Art3mis is originally presented to the audience as a strong character who is apparently well known within the OASIS as one of the top Egg Hunters -- Gunters, in the parlance of the movie and book -- and Parzival is immediately smitten with her despite only seeing her avatar on Kaira's bike from AKIRA. At this point the movie becomes a cliche teen love, "get the girl" movie. Parzival still cares about the OASIS but only in the context of his relationship with Art3mis.

In the real world, Art3mis (aka Samantha Cook) is portrayed as a member of some rebellion group who has at least one shadow operative working behind the scenes. Yet barely an hour after being introduced to Art3mis as a strong character with an axe to grind against IOI (and 10 minutes after meeting her in the real), Art3mis' character is turned into a shrinking violet who defers to Parzival and even sacrifices herself to the very thing that she was fighting against in order to save Wade in the real. This, of course, sets up the final conflict which becomes more about saving Art3mis than saving the OASIS. Parzival trashing IOI and bringing down Sorrento is a bonus but the real reason he feels he has to win the Easter Egg hunt is to rescue his love interest from the clutches of IOI.

The other three members of the high five - Aech (Parzival's best friend ever), Daito, and Sho - are all given short shrift. They are paper thin characters both in the OASIS and in the real. Aech is the most prominent but Aech's role devolves into mid-movie comic relief and late movie chauffeur. Daito and Sho are practically afterthoughts.

The movie bombards the viewer with CGI special effects and nostalgia bombs. It's worth noting, however, that a good 90 percent of the nostalgia and in-movie pop culture references were in the trailers. If you've seen the reveal trailer, the second trailer, and the final trailer you've seen almost all of the references. There's only three sections not shown in the trailers with a handful of references. The high point of the nostalgia trip is the second key challenge within a recreation of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". As an aside, I couldn't help but wonder why, in this universe, video gaming development died circa 2017 -- where everyone is still playing Overwatch, Borderlands, Halo, and DOOM 30+ years later. It's as if the OASIS came out and game developers just gave up. Since the movie doesn't take the time to really explain WHY these old franchises and 80's nostalgia are so prevalent, it feels shoehorned in and makes very little sense.

Nostalgia alone is why this movie is getting high ratings by viewers. Take off the nostalgia goggles and evaluate the movie for the story it tells and how it tells it. It wants to be a nostalgia driven, young adult dystopia movie like Hunger Games or Maze Runner but lacks the story chops to pull it off and relies on CGI as glue to hold together the weak narrative. Bear in mind that this is just a view of the movie on its own merits. If I really wanted to do a deep dive comparing it to the book, well, that would take far too long. Suffice to say, if you liked the book and are expecting the book, you'll be disappointed. Especially if you're a fan of Ogden Morrow's character from the book.… Expand

The trails felt slapped together and were far less interesting and nuanced than in the novel. I didn't understand all of the references when I read it and that actually made it more interesting and fun. The film panders to a broad audience.

The acting was mediocre and I felt that some performances were just poor. The dialogue didn't help much and some of the scenes were just cringe inducing. The ending was at least solid and more entertaining than first half of the movie so they didn't completely butcher it.… Expand

The actors are mostly bland, overly-pretty, flatly sincere agents of wish-fulfillment, except for an incredibly realized performance from Mark Rylance and a much-welcomed late appearance from Lena Waithe. The nostalgic score is dreadfully out-of-place, doing its best to recreate the schmaltzy John Williams retro glow of early Spielberg but instead contrasting badly with the post-apocalyptic trappings and the implied social commentary. And that's the ultimate problem with this visually stunning but half-baked movie: it is too caught up in its own manufactured nostalgia to have any concern for the present or the future. That inherent conflict between sentimentality and forward-progress is essential to the underlying story, but here it is rendered into a meandering mush more concerned with expensive "gee-whiz" effects and cheap "awwww"-inducing pop culture references.… Expand

Again, seriously, how much did THAT cost in licensing fees?! And 15-mins in I'm getting the first bit of too-muchery, during the wreck-every-sec opening race where Parzival, aka Z, is tailing Artemis and is just so fortunate to be able to pick up all the players' coins who crash near him, while he miraculously escapes the mayhem around him, yeh, ok, it's like this then. The animated characters are derivatives of those in "Avatar", so I guess they licensed that tech, too. Keep in mind that anyone can be anything, species, gender, etc but our principals have chosen avatars that resemble them IRL, way to spoon feed us Spielberg. And it's kind of incongruent that Wade IRL is nerdy meek and a pushover but his alter ego, Parzival, is bold and assertive, so that doesn't track. And the Curator, a C3PO derivative, seeing a pattern here? Skipping to the end, it's filled with Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" material and the most blatant is when Parzival asks Halliday what he is and Halliday responds deflectively. While enigmatic to young 'uns, it's once again infuriatingly derivative and a wasted trope to any grownup. And finally, the final scene is a direct contradiction of that just described scene betw Z and Halliday. Oh, unexpected treat, TJ Miller (formerly of "Silicon Valley") as an awkwardly comedic I-Roc. Tieing this up, the VR CGI was decent enough but it didn't always track with reality and the overall plot was so very derivative that watching this qualifies as a rewatch of like five other films.… Expand

Not bad I guess.

It's a pretty movie. Some genuinely funny moments. It's great to see cyberpunk, video games, and VR represented in a mainstream movie. Product tie-ins / references are fun. Acting wasn't bad. Writing wasn't noticeably bad.Not bad I guess.

Really strains the limits for suspension of disbelief, both in terms of the technology and the world built in the movie.
Plot is predictable, unoriginal, and shallow.
No real reason to care about any of the characters.
Feels rushed, especially the love story.
Scope is way too big.

Not worth paying movie theater prices.
Probably worth renting at home or watching on Netflix.

Excited to see someone else make a (hopefully good) adaptation of Snow Crash if this movie sells well.… Expand

Endings can really ruin the whole thing.(edit:forgot to put, the action was pretty amazing and at times was at a next level of action. even borrowed my favorite post synder zoom effect. yet doing to many sweeping overhead shots of all the stuff on screen is too distant, holding still or besides the great race scene holding diologue for later would have been much appreciate) Same with expecting something to happen that will bring great joy and of course, it never happens. That led to this sharp score. He's Clark Kent, it's awsome to know the CEO(chief eperating officer) would choose superman as the ultimate character. I think I saw him smack a giant in a preview but maybe ben middleson should be known as the courier of cut content(ooh that sounds cleva. Yep my reason for excluding the r did show up around 3 times before her thumnail part and those blinks were great but only blinks. She doesn't look right, though not as unpleasant as her first ever showing and I know not to expect much for those short, probobly french word things but I expected at least a sentence or to get her wrong(by doing her right, most of her appeal is taking her base and then imagining a more personable altered version)longer. But that was quarters(they literally bleed money *holds for laughs* by the way that is called a asterisk) when I could already imagine him ripping open his suit and flying towards enemies with the ultimate accelerated punch. They didn't use superman, but you missed him in the background, thanks but don't care. I know mecha godzilla is the 11(this movie has the most references it kills the word so here's mine) but, well, maybe the excuse is they really wanted iron giant and gundam to actually destroy something. so thats that and the endings conclusion, rule 1 save any overt message for the last line, is something that even those with low "thinking" skills come up with. but videogames aren't real. Even though they are. Are you i8magining all those electrons on the screen, was it some, life long waking dream? It harkens back to the 80's when according to(I fixed it from "the" but ypu'd probobly read it right anyway) blood dragon, the message was to turn off the tv. It was rreasonable to expect maybe speilberg could think higher and say something more relevant, appropriate but I sadly had to confirm my assessment of his values, should he really be the one after scott to do halo, a older guy with no if little understanding of something "new." Someone who makes the opposite of games. Maybe he did change his message with the times, you can have fun with some distracting and harmful device, just make sure to take a break. Everything in moderation, something i definitely don't go by. But it's the only place you can get a decent meal, with fully body feedback, feeling the act of eating isn't far fetched. Maybe you could put in words, or straight sentences if discussing the actual physics of it doesn't make money, ooh this is sounding real mean. But maybe, is this the 3rd time? berg which i think means castle in german does the annoying thing that arguers do, they know they are right even if they can't say why....ooh that was good.… Expand

So I finally got around to see 'Ready Player One' and it was a perfectly fine. It's got some cool set pieces and the first race scene at the beginning was a chaotic thrill ride.

I've been hard on Steven Spielberg recently as I'm not always sure why he directs certian movies, and my perspective still hasn't changed yet.

Tye Sheridan is more indie than a leading man in a massive blockbuster. Great actor, but the directors he's been working with don't know what to do with him. Olivia Cooke entire character conflict with her appearance because of a birthmark on her face was laughable. Like she's freaking gorgeous. It's shameful to see The Iron Giant being turned into a killer weapon despite going against the powerful message in his own movie.

It's bloated, but still pretty enjoyable.… Expand

In all fairness, it could never have fully lived up to the hype as the novel on which it is based is far too difficult to fully realise on screen. Therefore, my expectations were tempered by the knowledge that it would be unreasonable to expect the film to cover everything. What I wasn't expecting was a film that failed to cover virtually any aspect of the novel with anything more than a thin veneer of respect for the source material. There is spectacle to be enjoyed here, though it is often visually cluttered, and the lighting fast pace holds the audiences interest. However, the script of merely sufficient, the soundtrack isn't as iconic as needs to be, the plot lacks all depth, and this fails to address any of the myriad social, gender, class, and economic commentary that made the novel so engaging. The basic concept of the novel is there, but the lack of complexity and thematic interest means this is never elevated above the superficial, making for a hollow and unsatisfying experience. 4.78/10… Expand

Let's face it, the only reason everyone is being unnecessarily kind to Ready Player One is Steven Spielberg. Starring numerous characters from games and movies that you love, ie the second reason everyone is loving Ready Player One. The visuals look great but for me it just felt too much like a never ending video game cutscene that I couldn't skip.

Set in a dystopian 2045, the only way people cope is by escaping into OASIS, a virtual reality created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance) where the only limit is your imagination. After Halliday's death he has left a series of challenges that will lead the players to an Easter egg which will give the player who finds it his fortune and control of the game. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is just one of the many people who spends most of his time in the OASIS desperately trying to win the digital Easter egg. Every scene is an assault on the eyes, there is so much to take in you spend the majority of the movie preoccupied with spotting reference upon reference. I'm not going to lie, I loved seeing the Iron Giant, and the DeLorean on the big screen. Not to mention the references to Alien, Superman, Jurassic Park etc. and I absolutely loved that sequence about the Shining. Brilliant, well thought out and entertaining. Yet that's all Ready Player One is, everything you loved as a kid brought together in one film. If you strip away the nostalgia and references you're left with a story you've seen done countless times before. The good guys going up against the evil corporate suits, because if the they win it's game over man. All the nostalgia is constantly in your face to distract you from how ridiculous the main characters look. Cartoonish avatars that just couldn't get me to stop seeing them as generic video game characters. Ready Player One doesn't feel like a film, it feels like a game, only you're not playing it, you're watching someone else play it. Recommended for all the gamers and/or Spielberg fans.… Expand

3. The movie is advertised as a gamer's film, but it really isn't. The game world of Oasis in which much of the movie takes place is really not impressive at all, either in content or in visuals. And a surprisingly large portion of the movie takes place in the real world of the dystopian future, which is designed equally badly.


4. Humour is flat and surprisingly childish.

Conclusion: A cinematic version of the "How do you do, fellow kids?", created by an old master who seems out of practice.… Expand

While watching Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' there was one thing that constantly made me smile: the innocent worry-free teenage life brought back through pop culture references, but even more, the personality of James Halliday, the creatorWhile watching Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' there was one thing that constantly made me smile: the innocent worry-free teenage life brought back through pop culture references, but even more, the personality of James Halliday, the creator of a virtual mega-world in the 2040s known as The Oasis. He is an innocent, socially challenged man, yet he does not express anger at the world. He is kind, loving and simply wishes happiness upon everyone.

This is a Steven Spielberg film, though. As expected, the production is not only great, it is one of the best in recent years. Seriously, I encourage you to watch this film in as highest quality as you can get your hands on. It is a visual blast from start to finish. The video-game designed world takes center stage, but Spielberg still manages to find polish even in the real dystopian world through beautiful long tracking shots.

Unfortunately, this is where the praise stops. For a film so beautiful and filled with references, 'Ready Player One' is a plethora of underdeveloped cliche side-characters and an over-developed lead character, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan). He is a hero among the virtual world, yet his anime we-are-gonna-make-it personality is seriously obnoxious. Sure, there is a teenager style edginess to it all, but overall he is filled with empty lines and superficiality.

In the end, this is a Spielberg film. So it's filled with absolute by-the-book visual panache and compulsively obsessive directorial polish. The script is occasionally broken, suffering mostly from an uneven and basic character and situational development, yet Spielberg fills it with a pleasant vibe not manifested necessarily through its heartwarming pop culture references, but by the times of which they remind us. Now if only there would have been more focus on them.… Expand

Something I did enjoy though, was the visuals in The Oasis. You can see the polygons on every character, which is a nice touch. Overall I did not love this movie, but I did manage to get some enjoyment out of the scenes in the game, which are unfortunately pretty rare thanks to how long the real life sections drag on for sometimes.… Expand

In fact I mostly liked the movie on my first viewing. It made me get the book and read it. After that I hated the movie.
While the movie is about 10% the same as the book, the biggest flaws are things you'd see without knowing that. There are people running around on the sidewalk in VR gear not bumping into things or tripping!?
Large groups of people killed in the simulation are kicked out of the game in reality in the exact same pattern as they were killed like they were standing in VR in the exact same spot as IRL.
So much suspension of disbelief is needed and not because of the sci-fi, just poor film making decisions.
I give this a 5 because it was a gateway drug to the jewel that is the book.… Expand

It's full of visual effects/CGI and I remember thinking it's a little like a teen version of The Matrix type film almost...not as exciting or philosophically challenging though, certainly. I lost track of the supposed plot after not very long. I enjoyed the battle/chase scenes and its somewhat entertaining but it isn't really a film that grabbed me, or caught my interest at all really. There are way too many refences to the past. It seems like every scene has 4 or 5 refrences of the 80's. The special effects are ok. This idea works better as a book rather than a movie.

Valerian Downgrade. I can't believe Spielberg made it. It contains a proper and overflowing homage, dedication and love for popular culture, but the set-up holes that are clearly seen everywhere can't turn my head.

The movie not so much, it seemed shifted towards the 2000's millenial era with scraps of the 80's and 90's left over. Everything that made this such a great story in book form has been lost on the movie.
I will say it is a beautiful movie visually with the way it melds 3d animation and real film together into a seamless vision, and the sound design is really good as well. I kept hearing music from all these other great Spielberg movies being mixed among new stuff.
I just can't get over how hollywood keeps screwing up these great book when they make them into movies.… Expand

There's no real depth or involvement to it because the characters are underwritten, the plot is clunky (there are several "why on earth would they do that?" moments) and I felt emotionally uninvested in anyone on screen. There's no jeopardy because everything looks CGI and you know EXACTLY how the plot will unfold. Yes, there are lots of references to 80s pop culture - I don't see why this makes the film better? This film could do with more dimensions in its plot and characters and fewer dimensions visually. And it was almost two and a half hours long. I was pretty bored by the end.… Expand

Besides that, I could have used more good 80's music, and the CGI wasn't bad, but it just got too excessive for me. See it if you want some moderately satisfying entertainment, and nothing else.… Expand

D'un autre côté, quand on voit toutes ces pièces qui tombent lorsqu'on "tue" les joueurs virtuels (ils se transforment en jolies pièces d'or sonnantes et trébuchantes) ou lorsqu'on voit les "centres de fidélité" (sic !), on ne peut que voir une allusion très appuyée aux microtransactions et autres joyeusetés du jeu vidéo moderne !

Mais après tout, le monde virtuel (par le truchement de ces casques et combinaisons haptiques ridicules) est assez bien restitué, de même que les mentalités des joueurs et de leurs avatars, véritables camés aux MMO de merde et de leurs boutiques cosmétiques, bref la vraie fausse vie par procuration.

Ce qui cloche terriblement dans le film, c'est toute la partie "monde réel" et là, c'est encore plus invraisemblable, plus débile, plus aberrant que la plus conne des grosses daubes free to pay, Fortnite et ses kévins de CM2 inclus. On veut bien qu'une dystopie de cet acabit autorise des fantaisies mais des montagnes de conneries à ce point, ça devient gênant. En fait, ils ont dû intervertir les mondes, c'est pas possible...

Puis, vient (enfin) la fin de ce truc tout de même très longuet, même si on ne s'emmerde pas vraiment (on tique régulièrement, comme l'horloge d'un microprocesseur), la fin avec sa morale en solde et la phrase qui tue : "la réalité...c'est réel". Ainsi que le cliché sur les créateurs de jeux : de pauvres nerds encore plus asociaux que leurs joueurs, complètement névropathes et dépressifs...

Pour un gars qui s'appelle "Spielberg", tout cela manque donc singulièrement de clairvoyance ; le film n'est pas aussi raté ou catastrophique que les rares autres films sur le thème mais reste trop souvent à côté de ses pompes.… Expand

Not all adaptations are true to the original text as books and movies are different beasts, however you do expect the core of the book to intact, and the characters done justice. Unfortunately Spielberg has not done that, the story is diluted and weak, the characters paper thin with no depth. For all the special effects (which are great) and the cinematography (fantastic), it does not help hold the film to greatness. It's a shame since they spent alot of time and energy getting the rights for so many IPs into this film and if you had a remote and a copy of the film, you could pause it and check out every single easter egg and name every single character they have squeezed in, but that would mean watching this again, which is simply not happening.
Stick to the book. It's fantastic, and really captures what it means to gamers to be part of the game.… Expand

Wow, if you read the book this movie is a huge disappointment in almost every way. Except for visuals this movie's story is beyond horrendous. This no where near lives up to the book. I have no idea about the source material but I can honestly say this story makes NO sense. I like the virtual world, I like the things you can do and the fun you can have inside it. You have IOI the big bad corporate bastards that are obviously the bad guys, but these guys literally kill people with NO consequence. Okay so there are no cops or anything, so why doesn't IOI just militarize and take control of everything? It makes NO sense. If there are cops or something, why not just go to them in the first place? IOI is offering millions of dollars like its nothing, has armies of people playing the game, yet they cant militarize in the real world and take control? Whats stopping IOI from forcibly taking the servers and making what they want? Better yet, take the platform and make their own! There are so many easy and clearer paths that could have been taken yet they choose to take the hardest path. The movie makes no sense in any aspect of any kind or real world logic. I get that its some post apocalyptic world where the video game means everything, but that means that the real world is just ignored and companies like IOI take over but not really but kinda but not kinda.... Its a **** concept and I think the movie was awesome being based on that TOTAL **** concept. I give it a 3, because I like the special effects and the in game fun and stuff, but thats all, everything else is garbage.… Expand

I was looking forward to this movie, but I could not watch it for more than about 15 minutes. The setup was extremely basic. Find 3 keys, pass 3 trials. The setup was extremely basic. Find 3 keys, pass 3 trials. I expect movies to be more sophisticated than a game of Doom. The mindless overdone CGI in the "virtual" world was just overdone for the sake of overdoing it. King Kong roams about, but who cares? None of it meant a thing. It was all gratuitous nonsense. And this whole idea that VR enables some kind of a magical transportation to another world falls flat. I actually had VR in the mid 1990s (it was called VFX1 and VFX3D), and now I have PS4 VR. It's not magical transportation to anywhere. You have to make sure you don't step on the cord, that you don't step on your cat, that you don't trip over the sofa. And the "world" is just basically a TV screen pushed up against your face. It's fun but it's not exactly transporting. This kind of sci-fi fantasy would have been more interesting and convincing years ago before so many became familiar with VR; the simplistic setup to this story was not interesting and the reality of VR makes the story hard to accept.… Expand

Ready Player One is by far the worst Spielberg film I've ever watched.

Ready Player One's story, plot, dialogue and characters are absolute trash and cheesy AF. It's a chaotic mess of some random teenagers who save the virtual world, mixed with tons of even more random pop culture references that don't make any sense. Garbage films such as "2012" did a far better job in those departments. The final part of the movie can only be described as a big, lame and messy "raid", according to the established MMORPG terms.

Ready Player One's production values are astonishingly high, and the exploration of videogame concepts such as Easter Eggs, Exploits, Glitches, Power-Ups and Extra Life was a nice surprise for me. But ultimately Ready Player One is a bad CGI movie where the physical actors aren't even shown for 90% of the running time. Steven Spielberg may be Hollywood's greatest ever fairy tale cinematographer, but with this one he missed the target.… Expand

I legitimately fell asleep while watching this movie. It's inconsistent, boring, flashy, and completely lacking in substance. I can't believe that Steven Spielberg dropped the ball so hard on this one.

I don't get this movie and it's a little boring I almost fell asleep watching it and my sister almost fell asleep watching it too and for me, it's a little long but the first part was wicked to see and some parts were entertaining
