What you're gonna expect to watch in this movie is a plethora of your favourite pop culture references, greatly played out for the duration. Everything from emotion to the chance of joy is delivered especially the greatest things ever found through Video Games and Entertainment. The aspirations of VR gaming is greatly illustrated as well, being set in a futuristic world. Considered myself to be a disconnected society because of the addiction of a VR game, made by James Halliday himself. Expand

It's nice to see all the references that are put in the film, whether they are in plain sight, or more obscure. The film is also beautiful with amazing CGI and special effects. The film is quite funny too, with a lot of clever jokes. However, the characters are fine, save for a few of them, but there is little to feel for these characters as the story arcs are kind of generic. Perhaps the biggest flaw comes from the pacing; often it feels like the film makers were trying to cram too much into the film at times. Nonetheless, Ready Player One is a great film from start to finish and I would definitely recommend seeing it. Expand

With a load of cameos ready to be seen and references ready to be heard and being a huge improvement over the 2011 novel, Ready Player One is guaranteed to bring anyone who are fans of at least one of the many cameos and references this film holds. What I like about this film is that its plot only relies on Easter eggs similar to how the novel relied on Easter eggs, but intends to go more modern than what you only see in the novel. Steven Spielberg might as well be known for directing well-loved classics, but he's also the same guy who also directed modern art like The BFG and this film. This movie is one long Easter egg from start to finish and I do recommend it even in the near future. Expand

I'll start with i have read the book,I personally think this was a brilliant movie, the acting was a 9/10 and the story 10/10. If you're not a gaming or anything 80's fan miss this movie as you'll probably give it a negative review.
The main problem i keep reading in reviews is, that wasn't put in and this wasn't put in the film. What people have to understand using characters in a book is totally different than in a movie, their things called licences which cost a ton of money and with this movie costing 175 million to make as it is, how much more needs to be spent to make everyone happy. Does everyone really think Blizzard let Spielberg use Tracer and D Va for free, plus all the other licences which were needed just to make this.
People seriously need to get a grip and review this movie as a movie and not as a book

So back to the review. The acting was hit and miss, some of the acting was great and some really didn't suit the character. visually it was epic and just sitting there trying to spot nostalgic characters, movies and games from the 80's and upwards made it even more enjoyable, I think i spent most of the movie saying "oh looks it's".

Overall - Yes the book is better, but when have we ever seen an identical port from book to film. However, this movie stands fantastic on its own whether it was based on a book or not

At every moment the movie bombards you with references of electronic entertainment, videogames, animation and other typical elements from 90's to 2000's. captures all the feelings and experiences of communities, developers, events, players, besides showing cameos of characters that do not usually include in movies of this theme, jargon of gamers, easter eggs, pop culture, wow is impressive.

Personally, the fans and there is nothing more to add to the excellent CGI, very careful and colorful. Actually the argument remains as an impulse for everything really important. Beautiful.

Having never read it, I must say that I really enjoyed this for the most part and all of its numerous little hints, winks, references, etc. to countless other films, games, pop culture icons and phenomenons, etc. It did however become somewhat predictable and ridiculous at times, but the overall amount of fun I had with this film made up for that for the most part. Overall, it's got so many fun little details and moments packed into it that you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't find at least a little bit of fun and enjoyment in this colorful and zany nostalgia trip. He returns'Ready Player One' is the most entertaining, most fun, and most visually stunning movies in 2018, and I loved every minute of it. Directed by Steven Spielberg - at 71 years old - he shows that he hasn't lost any of that old magic. He returns to thrilling sci-fi adventures where a group of young kids explore a world of wonder and endless possibilities. The year is 2045, and like most recent Hollywood blockbusters, the future is doomed. We meet a young boy named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), he says his name is like that because his deceased father thought it would be like a cool superhero name like "Peter Parker" and "Bruce Banner" (and the references don't stop there). Due to society being so stricken and misery populating the world, he often escapes into the virtual reality world known as "The Oasis". The VR goggles enter him into his Avatar named "Parzival", and the world of the Oasis is absolutely crafted in such a stunning way, you feel immersed and almost lost in its universe. The great mind behind the virtual world of the Oasis is James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who developed this feature over a decade before, to stop people from focusing too much on the harsh and economically struck reality, and escape to a world where they can feel free to be whatever they want. However, since Halliday died a few years back, he posted a video stating that he has left an Easter Egg somewhere deep within the Oasis, and that there are three keys to collect, in order to retrieve the egg. It's a race, and everyone begins to compete. And it is there that we meet our main antagonist of the film, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) who wants the egg for himself so that the Oasis can belong to him. And he will stop at nothing to make sure that he gets there first. Spielberg adapts this novel from Ernest Cline and uses many of the pop-culture references well... from "Back to the Future", "King Kong" to "The Iron Giant", they're all in there for a reason. Not to add to our nostalgic enjoyment. This is Steven Spielberg's most exciting adventure since 'Minority Report' (2002), it's fast, always moving, and you're never bored watching it. I felt like a child again watching this movie as it's been so long since Spielberg has made a blockbuster movie. Yes, I absolutely loved 'Lincoln' (2012) as well as 'Bridge of Spies' (2015), but 'Ready Player One' is what Spielberg used to be, and he should continue to make more films like this. I can't wait to see it again. Expand

The creator of the Oasis has died and has hidden an easter egg in the Oasis. The finder of this easter egg will become the new owner of the Oasis and will be given riches upon their imagination. We follow Wade Watts, an active player in the Oasis, as he tries to find the easter egg and win the prize. The movie has a lot of cool references to pop culture, including classic video games and movies. A lot of the movie is spent in the Oasis allowing for a lot of fun and interesting characters to be portrayed. The movie has a lot of fun high paced action sequences and has a good overall story. The ensemble cast is great and the film is filled (for the most part) with little references rather than the direct references that the book takes. The film can seem a little rushed at the start in setting the world and the final act can feel a little prolonged but that all doesn’t matter when the story gets tied up perfectly in Spielberg-fashion.

Steven Spielberg took what I thought would be an unfilmable book and created a magical world, full to the brim of pop culture references that everyone can enjoy. Who really doubted Spielberg though?

But apart from that, Ready Player One is absolutely beautiful because of the gorgeous CGI this movie has to offer. The Story (the most important aspect) is very well thought out, but with that comes some confusion and parts that will have you maybe asking your friend what’s going on; other than that: the story is very good and very fun. “Ready Player One” would fall under the “Amazing” category. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not the best of Spielberg, but even so, this movie is pure entertainment.
The good: All references to pop culture that can be found, originality, the 140 minutes fly by and the CGI ("excellent" at the height of the movie "Avatar").
The bad: not get to empathize with the characters, villains very loose and the reason that motivates the main characters is poor.
The best: the "Shinning" scene. Woaw.
A show to see in the cinema and in 3D.

Had a strong cast full of memorable scenes & characters. The story was brilliantly told in a 3 act format that scaled deeper as things progressed. At times it felt refreshing & original, but still familar so audiences can relate if they don’t follow pop culture down to its roots. Fans of games, movies, & TV will be delighted since no stone is left unturned here. You got icons from all walks of genre ranging from anime, horror, sitcoms, monster movies, shooters, fighters, comedies, romance, & adventure. My only gripe is that Warner Bros continues to make all their modern day films in muted color paletes. The movie almost feels like it is in black & white at times. Blader Runner & Mad Max sequels seem to be their only vibrant movies in decades. Expand

To be honest, if I didn't have Moviepass, I probably wouldn't have seen this in the theater, but I'm so glad I did.

Spielberg has recaptured the old magic he had with films like Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark. This movie is straight-up fun. The entire virtual world in this film looks great, is inventive, and feels fully realized. (Heck the real-world dystopian future also looks pretty nice.) It's also a lot funnier than I expected too.

Yes, a few parts are rushed, some parts of the future world leave you asking questions, and a coupld of supporting characters are introduced too quickly and weakly, but ultimately these are minor issues compared to the strength of the film.

I highly recommend this.

Before you read this, I DID NOT READ THE BOOK, so this is based on the movie itself.

To be quite honest, there was a lot of hype surrounding this movie with a pretty exciting trailer. I looked at that trailer, and came to the conclusion that it could go one of two ways. The film could be really good, or it could really suck and all the references would be gimmicks. Well, to be honest, I really enjoyed the movie. I felt the story was great with the shift to and from fantasy and reality. I loved the fact that I caught so many easter eggs along the way as well. I loved that it incorporated nostalgia and friendship into one movie, and those battle scenes though. I liked this movie so much it even brought a tear to my eye at one point. I feel as if this movie is something everyone can enjoy. Take your significant other, parents, friends, etc. to see it. I'm sure they'd love it as much as I did.

Good riddance,Weird Spielberg who makes great Oscar movies for a gold living (Lincoln,The Post) and welcome back,Spielberg who makes adventurous movies (Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Ready Player One and ET).
Now that I got that out of the way, let's start the review!
You know what's the scariest thing to exist after you walk out of a movie whose franchise is a great big success? Making your own opinions while comparing it to other existing products. That's what Ready Player One made me think after the credits rolled, even if I had a big smile of satisfaction (no,I'm not counting the IMAX too),and that's what fears me the most, since my opinion can hurt someone, but here we go:
I think Ready Player One is a more incredible movie than The Incredibles and more “Crossover-ific” than The Avengers.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
Sure, part of me was smiling at the references (Minecraft of all people,Halo, Overwatch…),but I was surprised by how some of the Easter Eggs were part of the story (Chucky being a toy a-la Terminator,The Iron Giant being upgraded etc.),as well as Spielberg actually caring about the source material, something I expect out of existing properties like this or the recent Black Panther, where if a less-talented director would've done this or that,it could've gone both ways.
Here we have a movie whose director does what he can to serve a well told story, with characters you’ll definitely root for (for the most part) and lots of references that,in part, are actually relevant to the story instead of being Captain America in a chair saying “I understood that reference” or Tony Stark saying “That dude's playing Galaga!”.
As for the characters, they give you just enough to make you care about them, except for James Halliday (the creator of the OASIS,played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance),whose writing is certainly better than Steppenwolf from Justice League, but still not enough to make you say “I wonder what he does next…”, although I give Spielberg & Co. credit for actually trying instead of making it this 2D character.
The technology used for this movie is definitely something to praise.
Trust me when I say “If you'll see it in IMAX 3D,you'll think Doctor Strange was just a little kid's dream afterwards with the headache-assured visuals”,because, while some of the moments have generic action set pieces, they roll as fast (and furious) as one of those Star Wars attractions at Disneyland.
Everything is so frenetic and exactly paced, you'll be in for a 2h 20m Rollercoaster, with the runtime being solid.
I even liked Alan Silvestri’s score here, and while it has the flaws (trying to be hip-and-cool with the 80s? Here we go…), it's filled with goofy yet emotional moments.
So...Yeah,I'm in a Mad Max Fury Road (or Spider-Man 2) status now, where I can't recommend it enough just because of how it was a good time at the movies (again, not counting the luxury of IMAX 3D),so I definitely give it a thumbs up. WAY UP. Ready Player One is bound to be of the most iconic movies for this generation's kids thanks to Spielberg's egregious directing, stunning visuals and a good yet charismatic story. It's not one of Spielberg's best, but it's almost there, since its way better than The Post.
“So, we're on the clock” -The Grandmaster,Thor Ragnarok

Ever since 2008's lukewarm Kingdom of Crystal Skull, Spielberg's heart is not in the blockbuster genre that he has literally invented. Ready Player One is at most his most 'serious' attempt at going back to this 'genre'. When it is clearly 'live action', it works wonders. When it is in the OASIS however, the action scenes feel 'floaty'. It almost feels like the current slew of young 'upstarts' have surpassed the 'master' in 'staging' CGI filled action sequences. Things picked up for the final third where you can feel that Spielberg magic again, yet when his serious films such as 'The Post' are more 'gripping' than his 'blockbuster films', you know that his heart is not fully on it anymore. Overall a very predictable story with little meaningful character development. That being said, I bought a ticket more to see the Iron Giant butt heads with Mecha-Godzilla (come on, that was cool and you know it) than I did the points mentioned above, so overall I can’t be too harsh on this movie. My only big grief here is that seeing the Lancer being used by Artemis and the Spartan avatars during the final battle is probably the closest thing I’ll ever get to seeing a Gears of War or Halo movie on the big screen, and that makes me sad. I read the book twice and in my opinion the movie does a pretty good job at portraying the story, with a few minor and a couple major things changed. Nothing that messes with the story though.
The visuals are just as I imagined them when reading the book - so job well done there! It's pretty much spot-on. The IOI makes me think of RoboCop.

It is, obviously, a CGI heavy movie. This both works in its favor, but also against it. Against it because it makes the movie seem a bit synthetic - which it is of course. But it does seem to struggle in finding a way in which it should portray people wearing the goggles versus what they are doing inside the Oasis. For instance, there's several scenes where people wearing VR goggles in the streets are running down the street to mimic that motion in VR. That makes absolutely NO sense. People would be running into walls, and into each other. That was just silly, and they do it several times. But I can see past that.

The story is pretty good, the characters are interesting although some of them should have been fleshed out better.

All in all I was very well entertained, and some of the scenes were downright fantastic! Not gonna mention which, but you'll know when you see it.

Related media: I have not read the novel of the same name.

What's it like?: It's like Tron and Tron:Legacy, about a person entering the virtual world to complete a task while being pursued by the villains. There are numerous pop culture reference to the 80's and a numerous game characters from the 80's to the present.

Pros: 1) There are a numerous pop culture references to the 80's from gaming, music, films and fashion. Their inclusion is fun and funny, particularly that regarding The Shining.

2) Many of the game characters from the 80's to the present make an appearance in the film as game avatars. This was fun... until it became too much.

3) The film provides many insights into the world of gaming, past and future. It shares with the audience what makes gaming fun and meaningful.

Cons: 1) There is insufficient development in the background stories around the real world part of the film and on the characters in the film. No explanation was provided on how the dystopian world came to be and what the people in the real world do when they are not involved in VR gaming. Our hero does not seem to go to school, work, eat, drink, or go to the toilet at all, for the entire duration of the film!

2) Spielberg has some frustrating styles and views when it comes to true children films. He doesn't allow certain things in his film - he digitally removed firearms from ET, 25 years after it came out. In Ready Player One, some characters die in the novel and one is a lesbians, neither of which happened in the film. Many of his adult characters in his films are also one-dimensional and it is often a case of smart children versus the evil/misunderstanding/uncaring villains/parents/police. While this film is more for teenagers, these criticisms are still somewhat true.

3) The scenes where the teenagers first meet up in the real world were very poorly acted. I was very much enjoying the film until these parts.

How would the the different age groups rate it?

Children: Excellent
Teens: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average

Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worthwhile to pay to watch it in the cinema.

Whereas the book was more 80s theme, the movie was filled with more modern day video game references. I felt walking out of the theater that this was a must see for fellow gamers such as myself. It was refreshing seeing another action adventure film from Stephen Spielberg. Lately he has been doing a lot of biopics, so it was nice to see the change of pace. They changed a lot of the challenges from the book but I thought this defiantly served the movie well from a pacing perspective. Overall I couldn’t find any major flaws with the film; it was just a good action adventure film to see on the big screen. I do think audiences that do not play video games, may find less value in the film. Due to the fact that they would not be able to appreciate all the hidden Easter eggs. Expand

I feel the movie does a fine job at telling just whats going on and showing it in a beautiful fashion. And there lies my one gripe with the movie.

Ready Player One has a very bad tendency of telling instead of showing. This is most notable in the opening minutes of the show where plenty of time is spent narrating and explaining the plot. I feel this hurts the movie as the visuals tell a lot and do so in a much cleaner way. For example the way they explain how his family dynamic works flows very well and with just a couple of character actions you can easily see what everyone's feelings towards each other are. Overall I feel if more scenes were conveyed like this the movie could easily be a 9.

Putting that aside however I found the movie very refreshing. For a movie all about the virtual world it felt very nice how it was handled. And without going into spoilers I have to say the ending while semi hand fisted legitimately gave me chills from how it was handles. Overall there's a lot of things I could praise the movie on but nothing would put into words how well I believe the imagery in it works to drill into the viewer's heart.

Сюжет: Можно было бы что-то выдумать, и сказать что он запутанный, но нет. Фильм до боли прост, но что самое главное, таким он и должен быть. Если бы Спилберг хотел полностью передать происходящие книги на экран, то скорее всего в два с чём-то часа он бы не влез. Я прекрасно понимаю, что они немного поковеркали книгу, но фильму это пошло только на пользу, по этому с сюжетом все хорошо;

Актёры: Каст реально вышел неплохим, когда я первый раз увидел трейлер, сразу же возникли мысли по поводу того, что каст очень слабый и скорее всего мне не зайдёт. Но опять же таки, актеры выложились по максимуму, и с кастом тоже все хорошо;

Графон: Я уже давно начал плеваться на графон в фильмах, но черт возьми, «Первому игроку приготовится» выглядит просто ошеломительно. Я не знаю как фильм будет выглядит в обычных кинотеатрах, но в IMAX он выглядит просто шикарно. CGI не подвёл, весь фильм сидел с открытым ртом, офигивая от картинки; Отсылки: Скорее всего одним из самых главных аспектов данного фильма - это пасхалки. Вы скорее всего даже представить не можете сколько их, сидя в кинотеатре я иногда даже подрывался видя своих любимых персонажей игр. Да и вообще, скорее всего это единственный фильм в котором присутствует так много пасхалок с игр, фильмов, комиксов, манги и т.д.; Звуковое сопровождение: Фильм пропитан хитами 80’х, и это очень круто. Каждый трек идеально вписывается в концепцию происходящего. Но было пару экшен-сцен, где вовсе не было музыки, и это показалось мне немного странным. Но в целом, звук и музыкальное сопровождение отличное; Итог: Если вы хоть что-то понимаете в играх, или даже играли в них, не важно, олдфаг вы или нью плеер, вы 100% найдёте персонажа которого знаете, и я вас уверяю вы будете в полнейшем шоке от масштабности этого фильма. Лично я давно не смотрел таких подорванных фильмов с таким гигантским числом отсылок. Все мы знаем, что фильмы по играм обычно проваливаются, но этот фильм исключение. Из-за того, что фильм снят по книге, а те фрагменты из игры, будь то персонажи или локации, служат дополнительными элементами. Когда я вышел из зала, меня переполняло чувство безудержной радости, мне действительно очень понравился фильм и я миллион процентов схожу на него еще раз, и вам советую;

When James Halliday (Mark Rylance), the creator of the OASIS dies, he offers the players around the world the chance to inherit his massive fortune and his company only if they can find a hidden "Easter Egg" along with three keys needed to unlock it. Now, a young "gunter" (someone that's dedicated to finding the keys and the egg) named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) and his brave companions consisting of the beautiful Arti3mis (Olivia Cooke), his best friend Aech (Lena Waithe), and the brothers Daito (Win Morisaki) and Sho (Philip Zao) must find these items before the ruthless IOI corporation led by the sinister Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), can use the egg to privatize Halliday's virtual paradise...

Taking direct influence from the likes of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Matrix and Wreck-it Ralph, Steven Spielberg's loose adaptation of the 2011 80's pop culture love letter novel Ready Player One, is a wonderful throwback to the veteran director's Golden Age throughout the 1980's where he both produced and directed some of the most iconic fantasy/sci-fi films in the history of cinema such as Back to the Future, E.T and the Indiana Jones films.

Going into it's problems in which aside from some questionable overuse of dark blue tones in the color grading which makes it impossible to see the numerous cameos from the heavily advertised pop culture icons such as The Iron Giant, Gandalf and numerous others, The story takes huge liberties with the book's more intense tone and the pacing especially during the first act. goes by far too quickly for the world of the OASIS to be properly set-up for anyone new to this material or towards 80's to 90's pop culture as well.

However, Spielberg's first fantasy film since 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, does have it's heart in the right place in conveying the joy of escapism and creativity and unlike The Matrix's insistence that living in a fictional world is bad,no matter how bad the real world is, Ready Player One on the othe hand, in a similar method in how Hook told audiences that imagination and fun is important even if you're an adult, tells us that maybe spending time in a better world is not so bad after all.

Overall, Ready Player One while not rising to the levels of Spielberg's other films, much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? before it, is a wonderful love letter to geek culture and the fantasy genre of the last few decades that proves that one of the longest surviving "Hollywood" brats can still provide solid family entertainment after all these years.

The story line blew me away and by far exceeded my expectations. As of this writing, I have yet to read the book. This contradicts my usual procedure of reading the book before seeing the movie, but since many people who have read the book didn’t like the film, I am glad I strayed from what I usually do. I loved how the plot line had unexpected twists and turns, an aspect of movies that, if nonexistent, I am completely unimpressed. Ready Player One was the exact opposite, keeping me on the edge of my seat for the duration of the whole movie. I also enjoyed the references the movie made to other films, such as The Iron Giant and Star Wars. I happily give Ready Player One five stars, and definitely recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good film. Expand

I've looked forward to a lot of films so far this year, but there was just something different about this one. And it's weird, because most of my friends were not looking forward to this film at all. A good portion of them don't even plan on seeing it. That kind of caught me off guard, but I still went into the theater plenty excited to see it. It didn't disappoint. The story of Ready Player One is fairly simple. A man created this huge VR game that pretty much everyone in the world spends all of their time playing, but when he died he left a quest for everyone, and the first person to complete the quest gets full ownership of the game. It kind of has a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory vibe in the sense that a very wealthy man who created something incredible is just giving it away to someone he deems worthy, and it also kind of has the same vibe because of the wonder involved with the world that is the Oasis. I don't think that it's much of a stretch to say that most of us probably wish that the Oasis existed. The only limit is your imagination, and the realism of it is almost at a level that I can only dream that we'll see someday in gaming. I think that's part of the reason why I enjoyed this film so much. The Oasis storyline was very enthralling, and it was also fun seeing video game after video game after movie reference throughout. I also liked how there aren't really any dull moments. The movie moves forward at a very nice pace. I didn't even check my watch once, and I often check it once even in movies that I enjoy. I will say that the real life stuff was definitely the weakest part of the film, but I still wasn't particularly bored during the real life sequences. Another negative to the real life stuff was that there was definitely some cheese throughout it. Otherwise, though, I thought it was solid all around. I understand that it's really just a mashup of culture references in a video game setting, but I had an absolute blast watching it. I guess I was just the target audience for this one. Expand

At first glance, Ready Player One has all the potential to be a franchise-starting movie with its large-scale world building and plethora of pop culture references. Unfortunately, Steven Spielberg’s newest work falls a bit flat due to a multitude of shortcomings in key aspects of the film. The most glaring issues are in a script, which feels like common fanfiction centered around a forgettable protagonist. Meanwhile, the direction, production design & editing of Ready Player One are all satisfactorily executed but with enough inattention that the experience sometimes feels like an afterthought.

The famous Spielberg touch does show up at the tail end of Ready Player One but, at that point, it feels almost jarring. This inconsistent vision is a huge detriment to a movie based around such a stylish premise. Ultimately, there are enough cool moments and adequate techniques that should have most viewers calling Ready Player One passable. However, its unfocused and generic vibe will leave many audience members feeling sneaking disappointment.

Tons of characters from books, videogames, movies & a lot of iconic music; horror movie characters as well. You're going to desire this virtual would to exist. You'll have to watch this piece of work several times to see all the references, easter eggs & characters. OST by Alan Silvestri is awesome. This film has a good message: it's not the same to be alive as to live, OASIS might be good where you could be Superman & Fly, but it's not the real world, don't waste your whole life in the internet & social medias. In this age of bad Blockbusters, without soul, a 71-year-old Spielberg had to come to give lessons about how a good blockbuster has to be. This movie is going to be a CULT MOVIE. Expand

This was an incredible movie - what an experience! I stopped playing video games in the 80's, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this film. My head is still spinning - not just from the tremendous action scenes, but the whole experience. A job well done, Mr. Spielberg and team! One note - when I heard that the Iron Giant was going to be in it, I cringed because that is one of my all time favorite movies. I was concerned that it would look like the Iron Giant but not act like him. Very pleasantly surprised - he had the same innocence and selflessness as in the original film. Loved this movie!
