The picture plays like a glitzy, nostalgic stroll down an '80s version of memory lane, chock full of nonstop references to the decade's movies. music and memes (in itself an odd fascination for characters in a story set in 2045). What's worse, the film lacks a fundamentally compelling story and takes about 45 minutes too long to get to a central message that becomes patently obvious early on in the picture. If you're looking for purely mindless entertainment, you'll probably find this moderately amusing, but, if you want something more substantive, skip this one and watch one of the filmmaker's earlier (and much better) offerings. Unfortunately the movie was a huge disappointment. The tone of movie is inconsistent, sometimes it's very real and at other times it's completely contrived and fairy tale. In the end it seems like it was targeted for 12 year olds. Some of the scenes work and others fall flat. The humor never really connects and feels forced. It doesn't feel like an adaptation of the novel, instead it feels like an adaption of a video game based on the novel. Expand

Everything from emotion to the chance of joy is delivered especially the greatest things ever found through Video Games and Entertainment. The aspirations of VR gaming is greatly illustrated as well, being set in a futuristic world. Considered myself to be a disconnected society because of the addiction of a VR game, made by James Halliday himself. Expand

It's nice to see all the references that are put in the film, whether they are in plain sight, or more obscure. The film is also beautiful with amazing CGI and special effects. The film is quite funny too, with a lot of clever jokes. However, the characters are fine, save for a few of them, but there is little to feel for these characters as the story arcs are kind of generic. Perhaps the biggest flaw comes from the pacing; often it feels like the film makers were trying to cram too much into the film at times. Nonetheless, Ready Player One is a great film from start to finish and I would definitely recommend seeing it. Expand

Unfortunately Spielberg has not done that, the story is diluted and weak, the characters paper thin with no depth. For all the special effects (which are great) and the cinematography (fantastic), it does not help hold the film to greatness. It's a shame since they spent alot of time and energy getting the rights for so many IPs into this film and if you had a remote and a copy of the film, you could pause it and check out every single easter egg and name every single character they have squeezed in, but that would mean watching this again, which is simply not happening.
Stick to the book. It's fantastic, and really captures what it means to gamers to be part of the game.

With a load of cameos ready to be seen and references ready to be heard and being a huge improvement over the 2011 novel, Ready Player One is guaranteed to bring anyone who are fans of at least one of the many cameos and references this film holds. What I like about this film is that its plot only relies on Easter eggs similar to how the novel relied on Easter eggs, but intends to go more modern than what you only see in the novel. Steven Spielberg might as well be known for directing well-loved classics, but he's also the same guy who also directed modern art like The BFG and this film. This movie is one long Easter egg from start to finish and I do recommend it even in the near future. Expand

Imagine if you'd just read the book 'The Matrix' and though, wow! The film is just four weeks away! And then in the film, half of what Neo does is done by Trinity and in a disappointingly not very cool / dumbed-down fashion.

This film is sometimes fun in a splashy sort of way. What is annoying is that the changes seem intended to give Artemis a kick-ass girl-power role. What the director seems to have missed is that she already was kick-ass in the book in a more subtle way. In making these changes, Parsival became a shadow of the character he should be.

I tried hard to like it.

I'll start with i have read the book,I personally think this was a brilliant movie, the acting was a 9/10 and the story 10/10. If you're not a gaming or anything 80's fan miss this movie as you'll probably give it a negative review.
The main problem i keep reading in reviews is, that wasn't put in and this wasn't put in the film. What people have to understand using characters in a book is totally different than in a movie, their things called licences which cost a ton of money and with this movie costing 175 million to make as it is, how much more needs to be spent to make everyone happy. Does everyone really think Blizzard let Spielberg use Tracer and D Va for free, plus all the other licences which were needed just to make this.
People seriously need to get a grip and review this movie as a movie and not as a book

So back to the review. The acting was hit and miss, some of the acting was great and some really didn't suit the character. visually it was epic and just sitting there trying to spot nostalgic characters, movies and games from the 80's and upwards made it even more enjoyable, I think i spent most of the movie saying "oh looks it's".

Overall - Yes the book is better, but when have we ever seen an identical port from book to film. However, this movie stands fantastic on its own whether it was based on a book or not

At every moment the movie bombards you with references of electronic entertainment, videogames, animation and other typical elements from 90's to 2000's. captures all the feelings and experiences of communities, developers, events, players, besides showing cameos of characters that do not usually include in movies of this theme, jargon of gamers, easter eggs, pop culture, wow is impressive.

Personally, the fans and there is nothing more to add to the excellent CGI, very careful and colorful. Actually the argument remains as an impulse for everything really important. Beautiful.

The world building is limited to the first 5 minutes of the film where Wade (aka Parzival) narrates an introduction to the viewers. It doesn't adequately explain WHY the real world has become so lousy that everyone wants to escape to the OASIS, merely that the OASIS has become the preferred escapism drug of the masses. No attempt is made to tie in the constant 80's references, leaving the viewer to wonder why kids in 2045 would give a damn about John Hughes or Twisted Sister. All we're really told is that the real world sucks, everyone loves the OASIS, and that if the Big Bad™ IOI and Sorrento win the late James Halladay's easter egg hunt the OASIS will become as lousy as the real world. So players like Wade and his best friend Aech are on a quest to win the hunt and save the OASIS from IOI's corporate oppression.

Literally a few minutes later, we're introduced to Art3mis and the movie shifts entirely in tone. Art3mis is originally presented to the audience as a strong character who is apparently well known within the OASIS as one of the top Egg Hunters -- Gunters, in the parlance of the movie and book -- and Parzival is immediately smitten with her despite only seeing her avatar on Kaira's bike from AKIRA. At this point the movie becomes a cliche teen love, "get the girl" movie. Parzival still cares about the OASIS but only in the context of his relationship with Art3mis.

In the real world, Art3mis (aka Samantha Cook) is portrayed as a member of some rebellion group who has at least one shadow operative working behind the scenes. Yet barely an hour after being introduced to Art3mis as a strong character with an axe to grind against IOI (and 10 minutes after meeting her in the real), Art3mis' character is turned into a shrinking violet who defers to Parzival and even sacrifices herself to the very thing that she was fighting against in order to save Wade in the real. This, of course, sets up the final conflict which becomes more about saving Art3mis than saving the OASIS. Parzival trashing IOI and bringing down Sorrento is a bonus but the real reason he feels he has to win the Easter Egg hunt is to rescue his love interest from the clutches of IOI.

The other three members of the high five - Aech (Parzival's best friend ever), Daito, and Sho - are all given short shrift. They are paper thin characters both in the OASIS and in the real. Aech is the most prominent but Aech's role devolves into mid-movie comic relief and late movie chauffeur. Daito and Sho are practically afterthoughts.

The movie bombards the viewer with CGI special effects and nostalgia bombs. It's worth noting, however, that a good 90 percent of the nostalgia and in-movie pop culture references were in the trailers. If you've seen the reveal trailer, the second trailer, and the final trailer you've seen almost all of the references. There's only three sections not shown in the trailers with a handful of references. The high point of the nostalgia trip is the second key challenge within a recreation of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". As an aside, I couldn't help but wonder why, in this universe, video gaming development died circa 2017 -- where everyone is still playing Overwatch, Borderlands, Halo, and DOOM 30+ years later. It's as if the OASIS came out and game developers just gave up. Since the movie doesn't take the time to really explain WHY these old franchises and 80's nostalgia are so prevalent, it feels shoehorned in and makes very little sense.

Nostalgia alone is why this movie is getting high ratings by viewers. Take off the nostalgia goggles and evaluate the movie for the story it tells and how it tells it. It wants to be a nostalgia driven, young adult dystopia movie like Hunger Games or Maze Runner but lacks the story chops to pull it off and relies on CGI as glue to hold together the weak narrative. Bear in mind that this is just a view of the movie on its own merits. If I really wanted to do a deep dive comparing it to the book, well, that would take far too long. Suffice to say, if you liked the book and are expecting the book, you'll be disappointed. Especially if you're a fan of Ogden Morrow's character from the book.

He returns'Ready Player One' is the most entertaining, most fun, and most visually stunning movies in 2018, and I loved every minute of it. Directed by Steven Spielberg - at 71 years old - he shows that he hasn't lost any of that old magic. He returns to thrilling sci-fi adventures where a group of young kids explore a world of wonder and endless possibilities. The year is 2045, and like most recent Hollywood blockbusters, the future is doomed. We meet a young boy named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), he says his name is like that because his deceased father thought it would be like a cool superhero name like "Peter Parker" and "Bruce Banner" (and the references don't stop there). Due to society being so stricken and misery populating the world, he often escapes into the virtual reality world known as "The Oasis". The VR goggles enter him into his Avatar named "Parzival", and the world of the Oasis is absolutely crafted in such a stunning way, you feel immersed and almost lost in its universe. The great mind behind the virtual world of the Oasis is James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who developed this feature over a decade before, to stop people from focusing too much on the harsh and economically struck reality, and escape to a world where they can feel free to be whatever they want. However, since Halliday died a few years back, he posted a video stating that he has left an Easter Egg somewhere deep within the Oasis, and that there are three keys to collect, in order to retrieve the egg. It's a race, and everyone begins to compete. And it is there that we meet our main antagonist of the film, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) who wants the egg for himself so that the Oasis can belong to him. And he will stop at nothing to make sure that he gets there first. Spielberg adapts this novel from Ernest Cline and uses many of the pop-culture references well... from "Back to the Future", "King Kong" to "The Iron Giant", they're all in there for a reason. Not to add to our nostalgic enjoyment. This is Steven Spielberg's most exciting adventure since 'Minority Report' (2002), it's fast, always moving, and you're never bored watching it. I felt like a child again watching this movie as it's been so long since Spielberg has made a blockbuster movie. Yes, I absolutely loved 'Lincoln' (2012) as well as 'Bridge of Spies' (2015), but 'Ready Player One' is what Spielberg used to be, and he should continue to make more films like this. I can't wait to see it again. Expand

Really strains the limits for suspension of disbelief, both in terms of the technology and the world built in the movie.
Plot is predictable, unoriginal, and shallow.
No real reason to care about any of the characters.
Feels rushed, especially the love story.
Scope is way too big.

Not worth paying movie theater prices.
Probably worth renting at home or watching on Netflix.

Excited to see someone else make a (hopefully good) adaptation of Snow Crash if this movie sells well.

1. Extremely cliche storyline - boy meets girl, learns important life lessons, fights corporate greed - executed so horribly, that the movie becomes very sappy, very quick.

2. First action sequence is wonderful, but the rest are very, very mediocre. It is not the blast that some people say it is.

3. The movie is advertised as a gamer's film, but it really isn't. The game world of Oasis in which much of the movie takes place is really not impressive at all, either in content or in visuals. And a surprisingly large portion of the movie takes place in the real world of the dystopian future, which is designed equally badly.

4. Humour is flat and surprisingly childish.

Conclusion: A cinematic version of the "How do you do, fellow kids?", created by an old master who seems out of practice.

I can see how a society who’s depressed and discouraged would use a fantasy world to escape from reality. Yes, this film is why we go to the movies. It was entertaining! Expand

The ensemble cast is great and the film is filled (for the most part) with little references rather than the direct references that the book takes. The film can seem a little rushed at the start in setting the world and the final act can feel a little prolonged but that all doesn’t matter when the story gets tied up perfectly in Spielberg-fashion.

Steven Spielberg took what I thought would be an unfilmable book and created a magical world, full to the brim of pop culture references that everyone can enjoy. Who really doubted Spielberg though?

Ironically, given the storyline, Mr Spielberg's artistic repertoire has not significantly advanced since the 1980s, and this is obvious in the appallingly stereotyped portrayal of the Bad Guy and of the Girl Interest - but most clearly thrown into shade by the cinematic quotations from the far more sophisticated Stanley Kubrick. The actors are never given space to breathe, the character development is paper-thin, and every performance is therefore hackneyed to the point of cringeworthiness. I mean, I know that things get cut and storylines can change when they make a movie from a book, but there is no excuse for this monstrosity. Barely any references to anything in the book: no Dungeons and Dragons, no Max Headroom, barely any 80's music or references to 80's movies, no Joust, no Ferris Beuller, no Monty Python, no Blade Runner, barely any old school video games... The quests all changed, the hints changed, the locations all changed. Ugh. Ernest Cline should be ashamed of what he helped create in this screenplay. He sold out. Expand

I was a fan of the book when it first was released, being an 80's kid and all the book was a nostalgic love affair of the 80's and 90's. The movie not so much, it seemed shifted towards the 2000's millenial era with scraps of the 80's and 90's left over. Everything that made this such a great story in book form has been lost on the movie.
I will say it is a beautiful movie visually with the way it melds 3d animation and real film together into a seamless vision, and the sound design is really good as well. I kept hearing music from all these other great Spielberg movies being mixed among new stuff.
I just can't get over how hollywood keeps screwing up these great book when they make them into movies.

In all fairness, it could never have fully lived up to the hype as the novel on which it is based is far too difficult to fully realise on screen. Therefore, my expectations were tempered by the knowledge that it would be unreasonable to expect the film to cover everything. What I wasn't expecting was a film that failed to cover virtually any aspect of the novel with anything more than a thin veneer of respect for the source material. There is spectacle to be enjoyed here, though it is often visually cluttered, and the lighting fast pace holds the audiences interest. However, the script of merely sufficient, the soundtrack isn't as iconic as needs to be, the plot lacks all depth, and this fails to address any of the myriad social, gender, class, and economic commentary that made the novel so engaging. The basic concept of the novel is there, but the lack of complexity and thematic interest means this is never elevated above the superficial, making for a hollow and unsatisfying experience. 4.78/10 Expand

Although the casting could have been better, this movie still has parts where you will go “wow” that’s some really good acting. But apart from that, Ready Player One is absolutely beautiful because of the gorgeous CGI this movie has to offer. The Story (the most important aspect) is very well thought out, but with that comes some confusion and parts that will have you maybe asking your friend what’s going on; other than that: the story is very good and very fun. “Ready Player One” would fall under the “Amazing” category. Details and plot are definitely tinkered around with, which I didn't mind too much. What most bothered me was how superficial it felt, and how the premise of having everyone in the world logged into a video game is never explored past a cliche-laden generalization of the entire situation. The movie as a whole as an enjoyable experience. It was funny and entertaining and I did not regret watching it.
However, the movie is also exceptionally parasitic. It feeds on content and pop culture created by far greater writers, visuals from significantly more competent designers and narrative from better authors. The world itself only carries the story the movie tells and it only manages to do so because the story is light and thin as a feather.
In my opinion it is a decent children's movie that is tailored to be easily watchable for adults. The visuals are quite good and the special effects blend well. It is, however, no masterpiece in no way whatsoever. It will sink below and beneath almost every cultural reference that it has exploited to boost itself with third party content.

Let's face it, the only reason everyone is being unnecessarily kind to Ready Player One is Steven Spielberg. Starring numerous characters from games and movies that you love, ie the second reason everyone is loving Ready Player One. The visuals look great but for me it just felt too much like a never ending video game cutscene that I couldn't skip.

Set in a dystopian 2045, the only way people cope is by escaping into OASIS, a virtual reality created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance) where the only limit is your imagination. After Halliday's death he has left a series of challenges that will lead the players to an Easter egg which will give the player who finds it his fortune and control of the game. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is just one of the many people who spends most of his time in the OASIS desperately trying to win the digital Easter egg. Every scene is an assault on the eyes, there is so much to take in you spend the majority of the movie preoccupied with spotting reference upon reference. I'm not going to lie, I loved seeing the Iron Giant, and the DeLorean on the big screen. Not to mention the references to Alien, Superman, Jurassic Park etc. and I absolutely loved that sequence about the Shining. Brilliant, well thought out and entertaining. Yet that's all Ready Player One is, everything you loved as a kid brought together in one film. If you strip away the nostalgia and references you're left with a story you've seen done countless times before. The good guys going up against the evil corporate suits, because if the they win it's game over man. All the nostalgia is constantly in your face to distract you from how ridiculous the main characters look. Cartoonish avatars that just couldn't get me to stop seeing them as generic video game characters. Ready Player One doesn't feel like a film, it feels like a game, only you're not playing it, you're watching someone else play it. Recommended for all the gamers and/or Spielberg fans.

The movie has good effects and some cool action scenes so it's entertaining enough but it never goes further than that because it plays it so safe.

What I don't understand is why there are so many critics and users giving video game movies bad rep because they are close to the source material (ie feels like a game) though I don't think I've seen another movie resembling a video game as much as this and it has quite a high score (no pun)? Is it because the name of the director, purely? Cause what this movie contains is as many references and easter eggs as there are stars in the sky and the story is as basic and "ticking the boxes" as it gets. It makes sure it doesn't step on any toes anywhere in the world and it doesn't dare to go outside the box. It's a shame because it could've been so much more!

There are two sections that are imaginative and engaging (when they enter the Shining and the "real world" chase/loyalty centre scene) but much of this film is spent watching cgi characters zooming around like a PlayStation cut scene. There's no real depth or involvement to it because the characters are underwritten, the plot is clunky (there are several "why on earth would they do that?" moments) and I felt emotionally uninvested in anyone on screen. There's no jeopardy because everything looks CGI and you know EXACTLY how the plot will unfold. Yes, there are lots of references to 80s pop culture - I don't see why this makes the film better? This film could do with more dimensions in its plot and characters and fewer dimensions visually. And it was almost two and a half hours long. I was pretty bored by the end. Expand

The good: All references to pop culture that can be found, originality, the 140 minutes fly by and the CGI ("excellent" at the height of the movie "Avatar").
The bad: not get to empathize with the characters, villains very loose and the reason that motivates the main characters is poor.
The best: the "Shinning" scene. Woaw.
A show to see in the cinema and in 3D.

The animation was really well-done, but the live-action segments felt very dull in comparison. The comedy was hit or miss, but the action was thrilling! If you love pop culture, you’ll find at least some enjoyment in this movie. There is something for everyone here. As a whole, the movie is only okay, but I think that fact alone makes it one of the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made! The fact that director Steven Spielberg was able to make a decent movie out of a book where half of it was just the author listing things that he likes is AMAZING!! It’s worth a watch! Wreck-It Ralph and Scott Pilgrim vs The World are better, though. Expand

Had a strong cast full of memorable scenes & characters. The story was brilliantly told in a 3 act format that scaled deeper as things progressed. At times it felt refreshing & original, but still familar so audiences can relate if they don’t follow pop culture down to its roots. Fans of games, movies, & TV will be delighted since no stone is left unturned here. You got icons from all walks of genre ranging from anime, horror, sitcoms, monster movies, shooters, fighters, comedies, romance, & adventure. My only gripe is that Warner Bros continues to make all their modern day films in muted color paletes. The movie almost feels like it is in black & white at times. Blader Runner & Mad Max sequels seem to be their only vibrant movies in decades. Expand

The whole point was just to cash in on pop culture references to better stuff from years ago instead of trying to create a compelling story of its own. The visuals are impressive but chaotic, like they just threw everything they had onscreen instead in hopes of overwhelming you instead of trying to craft something distinct and precise.

I'm also getting pretty tired of stories about escaping into virtual worlds, I think that reflects a rather unhealthy attitude in this age of widespread video game and smartphone addiction.

Do not expect direct port from the book tho, which is a good thing. Definitely my contender for the top spots for this year (which, depends on Deadpool 2).

Is it an exact recreation of the novel? No, but what novel is. The film managed to retain the heart and themes that are present in the novel while delivering a nostalgia fueled adventure. Goodies meets Willy Wonka and I love it!!!

To be honest, if I didn't have Moviepass, I probably wouldn't have seen this in the theater, but I'm so glad I did.

Spielberg has recaptured the old magic he had with films like Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark. This movie is straight-up fun. The entire virtual world in this film looks great, is inventive, and feels fully realized. (Heck the real-world dystopian future also looks pretty nice.) It's also a lot funnier than I expected too.

Yes, a few parts are rushed, some parts of the future world leave you asking questions, and a coupld of supporting characters are introduced too quickly and weakly, but ultimately these are minor issues compared to the strength of the film.

I highly recommend this.

The movie (full-length cutscene?) works best when it embraces its artifice and dives deep into an uncanny valley that has never looked and felt more canny. The actors are mostly bland, overly-pretty, flatly sincere agents of wish-fulfillment, except for an incredibly realized performance from Mark Rylance and a much-welcomed late appearance from Lena Waithe. The nostalgic score is dreadfully out-of-place, doing its best to recreate the schmaltzy John Williams retro glow of early Spielberg but instead contrasting badly with the post-apocalyptic trappings and the implied social commentary. And that's the ultimate problem with this visually stunning but half-baked movie: it is too caught up in its own manufactured nostalgia to have any concern for the present or the future. That inherent conflict between sentimentality and forward-progress is essential to the underlying story, but here it is rendered into a meandering mush more concerned with expensive "gee-whiz" effects and cheap "awwww"-inducing pop culture references. Also second part has a lot of contrived coincidence most of which look really dummy. Characters appear just out of a blue without any representation. ReadyReady Player One is a giant MMO virtual reality game presented in a movie format. This movie's got the same spirit like ET, The Goonies and other classic kid fantasy movies, but despite Steven Spielberg's direction it's not great. Ready Player One is by far the worst Spielberg film I've ever watched.

Ready Player One's story, plot, dialogue and characters are absolute trash and cheesy AF. It's a chaotic mess of some random teenagers who save the virtual world, mixed with tons of even more random pop culture references that don't make any sense. Garbage films such as "2012" did a far better job in those departments. The final part of the movie can only be described as a big, lame and messy "raid", according to the established MMORPG terms.

Ready Player One's production values are astonishingly high, and the exploration of videogame concepts such as Easter Eggs, Exploits, Glitches, Power-Ups and Extra Life was a nice surprise for me. But ultimately Ready Player One is a bad CGI movie where the physical actors aren't even shown for 90% of the running time. Steven Spielberg may be Hollywood's greatest ever fairy tale cinematographer, but with this one he missed the target.

Seriously, they basically read us a user guide to the movie! And, of course, the much heralded soundtrack which is basically a greatest hits of the 80s playlist. Again, seriously, how much did THAT cost in licensing fees?! And 15-mins in I'm getting the first bit of too-muchery, during the wreck-every-sec opening race where Parzival, aka Z, is tailing Artemis and is just so fortunate to be able to pick up all the players' coins who crash near him, while he miraculously escapes the mayhem around him, yeh, ok, it's like this then. The animated characters are derivatives of those in "Avatar", so I guess they licensed that tech, too. Keep in mind that anyone can be anything, species, gender, etc but our principals have chosen avatars that resemble them IRL, way to spoon feed us Spielberg. And it's kind of incongruent that Wade IRL is nerdy meek and a pushover but his alter ego, Parzival, is bold and assertive, so that doesn't track. And the Curator, a C3PO derivative, seeing a pattern here? Skipping to the end, it's filled with Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" material and the most blatant is when Parzival asks Halliday what he is and Halliday responds deflectively. While enigmatic to young 'uns, it's once again infuriatingly derivative and a wasted trope to any grownup. And finally, the final scene is a direct contradiction of that just described scene betw Z and Halliday. Oh, unexpected treat, TJ Miller (formerly of "Silicon Valley") as an awkwardly comedic I-Roc. Tieing this up, the VR CGI was decent enough but it didn't always track with reality and the overall plot was so very derivative that watching this qualifies as a rewatch of like five other films. If you've read the book, or listened to the audio book, get ready, this is a major disappointment. If you have not been exposed to the book in any form - you'll probably love it. The story line is the same general premise, but the gates don't reflect anything in the book, how they unlock the keys don't reflect anything in the book, and how the protagonist and antagonist interact is maimed by flipping character plot lines to different characters as mentioned before. IF you can get past those things and don't sit shaking your head in disbelief that this book was fodder for Spielberg to basically completely re-write, then you may enjoy this movie. If you can put those things behind, you will find that Spielberg created a video game of modern era out of older era games, but then changed all of those too. He managed to leave "Adventure" alone, and even managed to give Warren Robinette his due, though he literally murdered every other reference in the book. The animation was beautifully mastered to look like a video game, rather than real life. But the book makes it clear that the Oasis draws a new reality onto your retinas that is of such high quality, the real world seemed washed out. Spielberg failed to duplicate this as he decided to make all but a couple of scenes completely animated. Story lines. Had this movie followed the book, the final product would have not only had more socio-political impact, but he could have made something FAR greater than what I'm going to end by calling, garbage. No thank you Spielberg. Just because you can ruin a good book, doesn't mean you should use your creative license to do so. My final review is 3/10 because he gets about 3/10ths of the original content into the movie.. even though he murders it all the way through. Do yourself a favor - if you are going to watch this movie - promise yourself to never read the book - because you'll never see Spielberg in the same light again. Expand

Before you read this, I DID NOT READ THE BOOK, so this is based on the movie itself.

To be quite honest, there was a lot of hype surrounding this movie with a pretty exciting trailer. I looked at that trailer, and came to the conclusion that it could go one of two ways. The film could be really good, or it could really suck and all the references would be gimmicks. Well, to be honest, I really enjoyed the movie. I felt the story was great with the shift to and from fantasy and reality. I loved the fact that I caught so many easter eggs along the way as well. I loved that it incorporated nostalgia and friendship into one movie, and those battle scenes though. I liked this movie so much it even brought a tear to my eye at one point. I feel as if this movie is something everyone can enjoy. Take your significant other, parents, friends, etc. to see it. I'm sure they'd love it as much as I did.

And even those characters are dramatically changed in certain aspects to fit the movie flow, that being the best way to describe it. Clearly the story had to change up a bit to fit the way a movie works but fundamental things for the book are nowhere in sight here and the dramatic shift from the beginning of this movie to the beginning of the book really dropped the ball for me. Frankly, the movie seemed to say "how can we get the most recognizable characters from modern pop culture onto the screen and how many of them can we fit at one time" for every single scene in the movie. That was it's most important goal seemingly, to get the most references into one single movie as possible. Yes the visuals are nice and the CGI for this movie is very well done. I would definitely recommend to the people who go see this to read the book after they get done watching it. It's much different and much more dynamic then this turned out to be. I'm actually surprised Earnest Cline would allow this much to have been changed to fit the movie. Because I certainly did not like it because it was nothing like the book. Expand
