Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name, this movie is full of references to popular culture from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and even the 2010s. There are also many references to films, video games, anime and comic books as well from these eras. This is the non-superhero movie I look forward in 2018.

Set in the dystopian future of the year 2045, a VR (virtual reality) game called the “OASIS” created by the late creator, James Halliday (Rylance), left behind a fortune and his company that developed OASIS when he died. In order for those who want to claim it, they have to solve the clues that will lead to the Easter Egg. Whoever finds the Easter Egg after solving all the clues, that person will gain control of OASIS and his company.

As the year goes on, no one has been able to solve the first clue. Wade Watts (Sheridan) under his avatar name, Parcival, successfully solved the first clue and received one of the three keys which will unlock the door to the Easter Egg and the next clue to the second key. Parcival is then joined by his friends, Aech, Daito, Shoto and Art3mis (Cook) in a quest together to solve the clues and acquired the remaining two keys to the Easter Egg.

Parcival’s victory of finding the first key is noticed by Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn), who is the CEO of a video game conglomerate, IOI. He also wants to find the Easter Egg to inherit OASIS and Halliday’s company and he will not let anyone stand in his way to achieve his goals.

As a fan of pop cultures, this movie is quite fun and purely entertaining. This movie is so full of references such as DC Comics and Street Fighter and I cannot even identify all of these references. This is probably why I enjoy it so much and I may need to watch the second time to catch all these references.

Steven Spielberg has done the great job in making this movie enjoyable for movie geeks, gamers and general audiences like me. Credits also goes to Ernest Cline, who contribute the screenplay with Zack Penn for this movie and without Cline, this movie would not have been entertaining and successful. I definitely recommend that you should watch this movie especially to those who are fans of pop cultures and not just movie geeks and gamers.

Сюжет: Можно было бы что-то выдумать, и сказать что он запутанный, но нет. Фильм до боли прост, но что самое главное, таким он и должен быть. Если бы Спилберг хотел полностью передать происходящие книги на экран, то скорее всего в два с чём-то часа он бы не влез. Я прекрасно понимаю, что они немного поковеркали книгу, но фильму это пошло только на пользу, по этому с сюжетом все хорошо;

Актёры: Каст реально вышел неплохим, когда я первый раз увидел трейлер, сразу же возникли мысли по поводу того, что каст очень слабый и скорее всего мне не зайдёт. Но опять же таки, актеры выложились по максимуму, и с кастом тоже все хорошо;

Графон: Я уже давно начал плеваться на графон в фильмах, но черт возьми, «Первому игроку приготовится» выглядит просто ошеломительно. Я не знаю как фильм будет выглядит в обычных кинотеатрах, но в IMAX он выглядит просто шикарно. CGI не подвёл, весь фильм сидел с открытым ртом, офигивая от картинки; Отсылки: Скорее всего одним из самых главных аспектов данного фильма - это пасхалки. Вы скорее всего даже представить не можете сколько их, сидя в кинотеатре я иногда даже подрывался видя своих любимых персонажей игр. Да и вообще, скорее всего это единственный фильм в котором присутствует так много пасхалок с игр, фильмов, комиксов, манги и т.д.; Звуковое сопровождение: Фильм пропитан хитами 80’х, и это очень круто. Каждый трек идеально вписывается в концепцию происходящего. Но было пару экшен-сцен, где вовсе не было музыки, и это показалось мне немного странным. Но в целом, звук и музыкальное сопровождение отличное; Итог: Если вы хоть что-то понимаете в играх, или даже играли в них, не важно, олдфаг вы или нью плеер, вы 100% найдёте персонажа которого знаете, и я вас уверяю вы будете в полнейшем шоке от масштабности этого фильма. Лично я давно не смотрел таких подорванных фильмов с таким гигантским числом отсылок. Все мы знаем, что фильмы по играм обычно проваливаются, но этот фильм исключение. Из-за того, что фильм снят по книге, а те фрагменты из игры, будь то персонажи или локации, служат дополнительными элементами. Когда я вышел из зала, меня переполняло чувство безудержной радости, мне действительно очень понравился фильм и я миллион процентов схожу на него еще раз, и вам советую;

The most thing I was worried about in Ready Player One is if it will be a mere thrill ride filled with many pop-culture references rather than it will be a movie with a good story. It turned out that I was right, but only about the first part. This movie is an epic adventure that will mesmerize all nerds and geeks, but it will also satisfy the real cinephiles who seek a movie with a smart and original story. In fact, this movie's story is really powerful and thought-provoking. I found myself engaged with the story and the characters, and also busy as much as the characters as if I was putting the pieces of the puzzle with them. The performances are good, but the movie didn't rely and focus on the dramatic aspect as much as on the adventure aspect. For me this isn't a problem at all, because the movie should be experience it as an epic adventure, like Avengers: Infinity War, not as your typical movie experience. That being said, Ben Mendelsohn as the villain, Nolan Sorrento, gave an awesome performance, and the character itself is very compelling, and it could be the best depiction of a clumsy villain I see in years. Unfortunately, The beta villain, F'Nale Zandor, is a pale character, and Hannah John-Kamen made this character even worse with an over-the-top performance. I felt that she was trying so hard to be like Gazelle in Kingsman The Secret Service, but she is far from Sofia Boutella wonderful performance. I think using the narration to set up the story fast wasn't a good decision, but looking at the full half of the glass, that made the fun begins early, so this kinda a half issue. The movie looks great, and the visual effects are breathtaking. Most of the movie is animated, and the animation is very beautiful and looks like the animation that has been used in video games rather than in animated movies. And that fits perfectly with the theme of the movie. Ready Player One definitely should be nominated for the Oscar for best Visual Effects, for best Sound mixing, for best Sound Editing, and I hope it will be nominated for best Animated Movie!

Ready Player One is my second favorite movie of 2018, but it's hands down the most enjoyable movie I've seen this year, and one of the most enjoyable movies I've watched in my life. I still can't believe how this Overlook Hotel sequence has been shot..... no...no... sorry, I forgot it's a SPIELBERG film!

So many reasons to be... The first reason is it has a lot of Easter Eggs that I was amazed to see in one movie.
The second reason is that the story and the way to tell are new and cool.
The third reason is the cast, the cast was good in the VR mode, but it was not that good outside of it!
The fourth reason is the CGI, it was fine as a movie in 2018, but as a story-line in 2045, it wasn't that good.
But it wasn't mistake-less, it has some drops too!
The biggest one is that the voices weren't fitting on the Players in the VR mode.
And the way Samantha escaped from her cage, wasn't really convincing!
I totally loved it... And quickly it has been one of my favorite movies!

Had a strong cast full of memorable scenes & characters. The story was brilliantly told in a 3 act format that scaled deeper as things progressed. At times it felt refreshing & original, but still familar so audiences can relate if they don’t follow pop culture down to its roots. Fans of games, movies, & TV will be delighted since no stone is left unturned here. You got icons from all walks of genre ranging from anime, horror, sitcoms, monster movies, shooters, fighters, comedies, romance, & adventure. My only gripe is that Warner Bros continues to make all their modern day films in muted color paletes. The movie almost feels like it is in black & white at times. Blader Runner & Mad Max sequels seem to be their only vibrant movies in decades. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actually better than expected - the story and graphics are what makes this movie compelling. While neither surprising nor deep, the story is sufficiently interesting to keep the viewer engaged; the CGI is really what sells it, the visuals are awe inspiring.

The only let down in the storyline was the bridge right in the middle of the movie: so, his aunt and several others die, and the hero is momentarily emotionally impacted and then shrugs it all off and moves on? Ugh. Other than that, there are several deus ex mahina moments in which the timing is just too coincidentally perfect to work or when a long lost side character reappears and insinuated that they have been present throughout all along. Nonetheless, enjoyable, and with some great performances.

You know what really impressed me in this movie?
The severe lack of political correctness and other neoliberal propaganda.
It was just pure entertainment without trying to manipulate you into an agenda.

Aside from that it perfectly captured the video/computer game and pop culture. And that with an old director as Steven Spielberg. That also impressed me a lot.
The thing is, the references and homages arent cheesy or unfunny, like from someone who never understood this culture, but they actually make sense and make you laugh, they also reflect the gaming culture right now with all its ups and downs. At some point, when a bridge collapsed, I was so immersed that I thought to myself "just build a bridge like in Fortnite!". But of course, Fortnite wasnt that well known when this movie was made. :)

Someone who is a gamer and pop culture fan himself wrote this script. And he didnt care about irrelevant PC! Because he knew that people play games and watch movies because they want to escape the dishonest and manipulative reality we have.

I have say I think Spielberg did a great job in adapting the story to the big screen. Everything really trots along at a fast pace and there were loads of game/movie references to enjoy which makes it worth repeat viewing. I am glad they changed the bits they did; a fast cgi car race to open the movie was a much better idea than showing the protagonist playing joust, and did we really want a segment of him reciting the script of "wargames" to win the second key? As it's Spielberg it never got too violent and we were always reminded the "deaths" were taking place in the safety of Oasis. Overall a really good popcorn movie, and a great adaptation that kept the essentials from the book whilst improving them for the screen. An extra point for not bashing me over the head with SJW propaganda, which has sadly been the case with a lot of the movies/tv shows/games I've seen in the last five years. Expand

This sci-fi action adventure could have easily hinged too heavily on the premise of utilizing pop culture references in its narrative. But -- make no mistake -- it's the characters, world, and story that take precedence over the overbearing fan-service that never was. Anybody who has played those know that sometimes you play the game, not for the story, but for the gameplay. Treat this like a game cut scene and your expectations will be more on par with the audience this movie was meant to reach.

It is a thrill ride through the pop culture and cameos of our favorite characters and icons over the past 30 years. It is a tribute to the online gaming community which is as chaotic as it is creative, as boorish as it is flamboyant, and as resourceful as it is crazy. Love it for what is. It is for us who stare into screens all night earning the next level of gear, who bashed the controller over every death, who screamed obscenities through the mic at the losers in king of the hill, who laughed our asses off over Leroy Jenkins.

Enjoy it for being what it is...an nod to gamers everywhere.

I read the book twice and in my opinion the movie does a pretty good job at portraying the story, with a few minor and a couple major things changed. Nothing that messes with the story though.
The visuals are just as I imagined them when reading the book - so job well done there! It's pretty much spot-on. The IOI makes me think of RoboCop.

It is, obviously, a CGI heavy movie. This both works in its favor, but also against it. Against it because it makes the movie seem a bit synthetic - which it is of course. But it does seem to struggle in finding a way in which it should portray people wearing the goggles versus what they are doing inside the Oasis. For instance, there's several scenes where people wearing VR goggles in the streets are running down the street to mimic that motion in VR. That makes absolutely NO sense. People would be running into walls, and into each other. That was just silly, and they do it several times. But I can see past that.

The story is pretty good, the characters are interesting although some of them should have been fleshed out better.

All in all I was very well entertained, and some of the scenes were downright fantastic! Not gonna mention which, but you'll know when you see it.

Related media: I have not read the novel of the same name.

What's it like?: It's like Tron and Tron:Legacy, about a person entering the virtual world to complete a task while being pursued by the villains. There are numerous pop culture reference to the 80's and a numerous game characters from the 80's to the present.

Pros: 1) There are a numerous pop culture references to the 80's from gaming, music, films and fashion. Their inclusion is fun and funny, particularly that regarding The Shining.

2) Many of the game characters from the 80's to the present make an appearance in the film as game avatars. This was fun... until it became too much.

3) The film provides many insights into the world of gaming, past and future. It shares with the audience what makes gaming fun and meaningful.

Cons: 1) There is insufficient development in the background stories around the real world part of the film and on the characters in the film. No explanation was provided on how the dystopian world came to be and what the people in the real world do when they are not involved in VR gaming. Our hero does not seem to go to school, work, eat, drink, or go to the toilet at all, for the entire duration of the film!

2) Spielberg has some frustrating styles and views when it comes to true children films. He doesn't allow certain things in his film - he digitally removed firearms from ET, 25 years after it came out. In Ready Player One, some characters die in the novel and one is a lesbians, neither of which happened in the film. Many of his adult characters in his films are also one-dimensional and it is often a case of smart children versus the evil/misunderstanding/uncaring villains/parents/police. While this film is more for teenagers, these criticisms are still somewhat true.

3) The scenes where the teenagers first meet up in the real world were very poorly acted. I was very much enjoying the film until these parts.

How would the the different age groups rate it?

Children: Excellent
Teens: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average

Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worthwhile to pay to watch it in the cinema.

This film is action-packed, fun, humorous, and very lighthearted what you are about to see as the tension builds up, but it can be a little distracting sometimes when the CGI gets annoyingly heavy and a pretentious story. Overall, Ready Player One is a must-watch for those that love video games and 80s-like nostalgia being blended in with the world of so-called “Blade Runner.” Trust me, this film is pretty nerdy and a must own for those that want a proper “video game movie” in their DVD or Blu-Ray collection.. What I like about this film is that its plot only relies on Easter eggs similar to how the novel relied on Easter eggs, but intends to go more modern than what you only see in the novel. Steven Spielberg might as well be known for directing well-loved classics, but he's also the same guy who also directed modern art like The BFG and this film. This movie is one long Easter egg from start to finish and I do recommend it even in the near future. Expand

The creator of the Oasis has died and has hidden an easter egg in the Oasis. The finder of this easter egg will become the new owner of the Oasis and will be given riches upon their imagination. We follow Wade Watts, an active player in the Oasis, as he tries to find the easter egg and win the prize. The movie has a lot of cool references to pop culture, including classic video games and movies. A lot of the movie is spent in the Oasis allowing for a lot of fun and interesting characters to be portrayed. The movie has a lot of fun high paced action sequences and has a good overall story. It is a movie that gamers will definitely enjoy for all the references, but even non-gamers can find a lot to enjoy about it as well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really special movie. It feels more like a metaphor to a gamers life, how addicted gamers really lose touch with reality, and when they die it's like they lost "everything". It's visually stunning, making you feel like you're in an actual game, and also makes you think you're in one with the way the story flows.

The story was great touching other topics as 'don't trust everyone you meet online', with the character Aech showing first hand how that can happen.

But there's a small issue, it looks really good with a great telling story, but the characters seem really undeveloped, the real only development we get is from the two main characters and a very weak villain (character wise) who just wants the money. From some other characters we only get their real names and real appearances and they leave it at that

I also really liked the characters they added, the search for them made my movie experience way more fun. Some of them were very important to the plot, but others were really subtle and those were the fun ones to find

Whereas the book was more 80s theme, the movie was filled with more modern day video game references. I felt walking out of the theater that this was a must see for fellow gamers such as myself. It was refreshing seeing another action adventure film from Stephen Spielberg. Lately he has been doing a lot of biopics, so it was nice to see the change of pace. They changed a lot of the challenges from the book but I thought this defiantly served the movie well from a pacing perspective. Overall I couldn’t find any major flaws with the film; it was just a good action adventure film to see on the big screen. I do think audiences that do not play video games, may find less value in the film. Due to the fact that they would not be able to appreciate all the hidden Easter eggs. Expand

The ensemble cast is great and the film is filled (for the most part) with little references rather than the direct references that the book takes. The film can seem a little rushed at the start in setting the world and the final act can feel a little prolonged but that all doesn’t matter when the story gets tied up perfectly in Spielberg-fashion.

Steven Spielberg took what I thought would be an unfilmable book and created a magical world, full to the brim of pop culture references that everyone can enjoy. Who really doubted Spielberg though?

I feel the movie does a fine job at telling just whats going on and showing it in a beautiful fashion. And there lies my one gripe with the movie.

Ready Player One has a very bad tendency of telling instead of showing. This is most notable in the opening minutes of the show where plenty of time is spent narrating and explaining the plot. I feel this hurts the movie as the visuals tell a lot and do so in a much cleaner way. For example the way they explain how his family dynamic works flows very well and with just a couple of character actions you can easily see what everyone's feelings towards each other are. Overall I feel if more scenes were conveyed like this the movie could easily be a 9.

Putting that aside however I found the movie very refreshing. For a movie all about the virtual world it felt very nice how it was handled. And without going into spoilers I have to say the ending while semi hand fisted legitimately gave me chills from how it was handles. Overall there's a lot of things I could praise the movie on but nothing would put into words how well I believe the imagery in it works to drill into the viewer's heart.

The film is quite funny too, with a lot of clever jokes. However, the characters are fine, save for a few of them, but there is little to feel for these characters as the story arcs are kind of generic. Perhaps the biggest flaw comes from the pacing; often it feels like the film makers were trying to cram too much into the film at times. I think the only people who would not like this movie are "professional" critics who think too highly of themselves, some non-gamers who are overly jaded or something, and self-absorbed trolls just hating on it for the sake of it. I went in with closed eyes and watched the movie as if it were standalone and not based on one of my favorite books of all time.

The movie setting was believable; set in a 2044, the technological advances weren't over the top, and very reasonable. The dystopian living areas made sense for the state of the world. Two of the main characters, Parzival and Aech, were introduced in a good fashion. The main character (Wade in real life) was given a brief backstory that allowed us to understand his situation, and his relationship with his cyber friend that he know has Aech. Their backstory was relate-able to anyone whom has every had a friend that they only knew through the internet. The rest of the "high-five" in the movie were introduced very quickly without much mention of where they came from. I would have liked to see a little more development between Parzival and Art3mis before they actually came into contact with each other. The action was very good and the scenes were very well put together. The comedic aspects were great, even from the antagonists.

I found the 80's nostalgia to be more visual than referenced; I won't spoil the Where's Waldo spotting of fun characters.

Overall, the movie is very fun but seemed a little fast paced in regards to the main character development. If you are looking for a replica of the book, you will be mildly disappointed; there are tons of differences. If you go in, like me, expecting to use it as just a reference, you will be in for a great ride.

I've looked forward to a lot of films so far this year, but there was just something different about this one. And it's weird, because most of my friends were not looking forward to this film at all. A good portion of them don't even plan on seeing it. That kind of caught me off guard, but I still went into the theater plenty excited to see it. It didn't disappoint. The story of Ready Player One is fairly simple. A man created this huge VR game that pretty much everyone in the world spends all of their time playing, but when he died he left a quest for everyone, and the first person to complete the quest gets full ownership of the game. It kind of has a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory vibe in the sense that a very wealthy man who created something incredible is just giving it away to someone he deems worthy, and it also kind of has the same vibe because of the wonder involved with the world that is the Oasis. I don't think that it's much of a stretch to say that most of us probably wish that the Oasis existed. The only limit is your imagination, and the realism of it is almost at a level that I can only dream that we'll see someday in gaming. I think that's part of the reason why I enjoyed this film so much. The Oasis storyline was very enthralling, and it was also fun seeing video game after video game after movie reference throughout. I also liked how there aren't really any dull moments. The movie moves forward at a very nice pace. I didn't even check my watch once, and I often check it once even in movies that I enjoy. I will say that the real life stuff was definitely the weakest part of the film, but I still wasn't particularly bored during the real life sequences. Another negative to the real life stuff was that there was definitely some cheese throughout it. Otherwise, though, I thought it was solid all around. I understand that it's really just a mashup of culture references in a video game setting, but I had an absolute blast watching it. I guess I was just the target audience for this one. Expand

In the case of Ready Player One, the new movie of the film magician, confirms our first statement.

Ready Player One is based on the book by the American Ernest Cline, which in turn was based on the famous video games of the 80s (a time well known for Spielberg) to set his book. In the near future (year 2045), Protagonist Wade Owen Watts / Parzival, (Tye Sheridan) lives in a chaotic, almost destroyed world, and whose only escape from those who still inhabit the earth, is a virtual world, a life parallel that each one carries where you can be what you have always dreamed. This world is called OASIS, and was created by James Halliday, a Geek of the video games of the 80s, and who, after dying, leaves behind him a challenge: find in OASIS, a series of secret keys that will allow to find the famous egg Easter, trophy with which the winner could claim the victory and total ownership of OASIS.

While it is true that the film, visually and narratively is the closest to the class spectacular film productions that Spielberg has us used to (close encounters of the third Kind, ET, Jurasick Park, etc), it is also true that the film , like the book, tends to be somehow predictable. Is the typical case of the weak hero who fights against a big corporation (David vs Goliath?) And that in the end ... Well ... obviously I will not tell you the end. What I will tell you is that it is the return of this great director to the World of magic and fantasy successfully (at the box office), since we remember that his last 3 films were more in the genre of historical bio-dramas as they were The Post, Bridge of spies and Lincoln, a genre that I'm passionate about, but which probably does not have the expectation of having a big box office as a science-fiction production.

Ready Player One exaggerates in the descriptions of the objects made by the protagonists, in some way is very faithful to the book, even in the narrative, in a textual way. This does not take away any merit, in fact it is a bet to return to have a resounding success at the box office, something that the famous director did not achieve in a forceful way since The War of the Worlds in 2005 and Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the skull of glass in 2008, the latter successful at the box office, but criticized by those of us who are followers of the famous archaeologist (The good giant friend, 2016, not full of expectations or box office, as well as The Adventures of Tintin Tin, 2011, left a bad taste in the pocket ... of the producers)
In Ready Player one Steven Spielberg is reunited with the genre that gave him fame in the seventh art, with magic, fantasy and adventure characters created to be enjoyed by the audience from the seat, is to see the magic and the quality of Jurasick Park, and ET (precisely its iconic productions of the 80s and 90s) with the technological innovation that is now available.

Finally, it must be said, those of us who grew up in the 80s, are going to like this movie, make constant winks to that decade (The Shine, Jack Nicholson) and its characters seem to be brought by Doc Brown's DeLorean and Marty Mcfly from the 80s until our 2018

The rise of VR worlds and gear were a great set up for this utopia. It creates a maybe not so distant future where we escape reality to go where we can feel at home. The little easter eggs and gaming subculture was captured in a really beautiful way.

I've also read the book and while it's not 100% the same, the filmmakers made reasonable choices to translate it into a movie. ALso the characters like Halliday and Wade are just as interesting here as they are in the book, while people like Ogdenmorrow or the Twins fall a bit flat, but that doesn't really matter, it's still a great videogame movie with interesting and entertaining concepts! We spend half of this movie in that same animated experience (with lots of 80s cultural references). Part of the quest is fought by avatars, while the humans create conflict back in reality. The visuals are sometimes dazzling and they move by really fast (lots of opportunities for freeze frames to look for Easter eggs). The story isn't unique: scrappy regular guys take on the powerful corp that wants to own the technology. The characters aren't especially original and the performances are nothing special (Mark Rylance is the only standout). There aren't lots of typical Spielberg touches (strong emotional connections, iconic moments), but he does keep it moving at a lively pace. BTW, this begs to be seen on the big screen because there's so much to see. Expand

Upon his death the creator of The Oasis sets players the challenge of locating three keys hidden inside the virtual world, the winner will be rewarded with full ownership of The Oasis and all the riches that entails.

All in all Ready Player One is a relatively entertaining movie, one that is at its best when we’re inside the virtual world allowing the spectacular special effects to offer a visual treat and bring to life all manner of pop cultural icons from King Kong to the hotel from The Shining. Once outside in the “real world” the movie does often drag a little however and, seeing as how most of the supporting characters aren’t particularly well developed anyway, trimming 20-30 minutes from the 2 hour 20 minute run time could really have helped with the pacing issues that drag it down slightly.

Ever since 2008's lukewarm Kingdom of Crystal Skull, Spielberg's heart is not in the blockbuster genre that he has literally invented. Ready Player One is at most his most 'serious' attempt at going back to this 'genre'. When it is clearly 'live action', it works wonders. When it is in the OASIS however, the action scenes feel 'floaty'. It almost feels like the current slew of young 'upstarts' have surpassed the 'master' in 'staging' CGI filled action sequences. Things picked up for the final third where you can feel that Spielberg magic again, yet when his serious films such as 'The Post' are more 'gripping' than his 'blockbuster films', you know that his heart is not fully on it anymore. Having never read it, I must say that I really enjoyed this for the most part and all of its numerous little hints, winks, references, etc. to countless other films, games, pop culture icons and phenomenons, etc. It did however become somewhat predictable and ridiculous at times, but the overall amount of fun I had with this film made up for that for the most part. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not the best of Spielberg, but even so, this movie is pure entertainment.
The good: All references to pop culture that can be found, originality, the 140 minutes fly by and the CGI ("excellent" at the height of the movie "Avatar").
The bad: not get to empathize with the characters, villains very loose and the reason that motivates the main characters is poor.
The best: the "Shinning" scene. Woaw.
A show to see in the cinema and in 3D.

Overall a very predictable story with little meaningful character development. That being said, I bought a ticket more to see the Iron Giant butt heads with Mecha-Godzilla (come on, that was cool and you know it) than I did the points mentioned above, so overall I can’t be too harsh on this movie. My only big grief here is that seeing the Lancer being used by Artemis and the Spartan avatars during the final battle is probably the closest thing I’ll ever get to seeing a Gears of War or Halo movie on the big screen, and that makes me sad. The characters are one dimensional, the acting is campy and the movie doesn't trust its audience since it spells out everything for us instead of trusting us to connect the dots in the world they built. That said, the VR world is fantastic and the action and sound design is captivating. The movie never feels boring and move quickly. I wish the movie could have reached a little deeper to touch on themes such as the effects of people choosing fantasy worlds over reality or how games might effect our real world behavior.
Equipment: AV-Receiver Arcam; Lautsprecher: Dynaudio; TV: Panasonic

The creator of the game make a easter egg, that the one who solve it will get not just a lot of money, but also the owning of the game, being able to turn it off any time he want. The movie stands as the battle for those who wants to solve for self improvmente and the others who wants for the world to keep health and better.
The movie stands as trying to keep the oasis alive and for do that there is necessary to achieve 3 keys, and for getting those keys the characters will need to get to some challenges, and from those challenges we can see the creativity that they did put in this film. The fact that they were able to get so many different licenses from so many differents projects is so on point for this movie, the fact that we see so many characters that we love or like, some object that in some moment had some impact on us make this movie very special, the nostalgia watching this movie is high level, it is a explosion of references almos all the time, and it is pretty cool, also from the context of the movie it doesn't feel forced at all, felt normal due to that world, not just that, but the creativity of the creators had a lot of them on appereance in so nice moments, some shots that were really cinematic and beautiful, the use of powers and skills, appereances and everything, very creative and that is just great. It got references from movies, books, musics, games, adaptations and even people. Hard level of references.
The acting was good, a very big percentage of the movie is in animation, so dubbing ty sheridan did a very good job, but as acting with the other aspects i don't he was that great, it wasn't bad, but i couldn't see that much of a shy a boy that passed thorugh a transformation during the movie. Olivia Cooke did a very good job as dubbing as well, but i believe that she was better in action while live action, i could feel her emotions a little better. Ben Mendelsohn acted nice, he was a sarcastic dude that wanted power and money, very cliche, but he did a similar job as he had in rogue one, but just not that good, he is a little more than just functional, he is ncie. The whole supporting cast did very well, they were all very nice.
One good thing that is on the movie is that controversial thing about gamers that you play online and when you finally meet them, there is some strangeness, cause they always are completely different from what you believe, in face shape, surely in age and sometimes even in genre, but with a little talk the friends get accustomed, this happend in real life and it is really nice the way that they put in the movie.
Cinematographically talking the movie is great, inside the Oasis the colors are dope and jump into you, it does give a life to the unverse, and in the real life it does have a gray color, wich is really nice. The camera participate with the action, also really nice.
The music get your mood all up there, there are a lot of references in it as well, there is a 8bit kind of feeling with some sounds as well, and it is 100% percent connected with the movie.
The movie tries to imput a whole generation way of thinking, that is inside of video games, we are kind of free to do any thing and be anyone in a way that in real life they aren't and can't be, what makes very understandable the whole thing about everybody preferring live inside the virtual reality. By the end it tries to implicate that the real life is more important and really bigger than the video games one, wich considering the world that we are and how people are today it is very important. The power of escapism, like how many time, money and effor do we use to get those things, just for a little moment to get rid of the real life problems, how the entertrain touch us, the movie say why do we love how much those things, but unfortunately it doesn't go in this way as much as i would like.
The story isn't great at all, the story is very cliche, it doesn't have that feeling of danger or seriousness like, what would really happen when they died in the movie or that it have a feeling that the oasis is just a fun place to play, wich is much more than just that, because they don't have more else do go or do, i think the movie could have explored that more.
The movie is definely very good, it does have a stunning visual, with content that for some people will be like walking around in their brains in what they think, wich is great, i believe that they could have gone a little more deep way, but is definely a very good one.
