Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant physicist often credited as the father of the atomic bomb. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the movie offers a nuanced portrayal of Oppenheimer's journey, exploring both his scientific achievements and the moral dilemmas he faced.

One of the standout aspects of "Oppenheimer" is its exceptional storytelling. The film skillfully weaves together historical footage, interviews, and dramatic reenactments to create a compelling narrative that keeps viewers engaged throughout. The pacing is well-executed, allowing the audience to delve into Oppenheimer's personal struggles, ambitions, and the weight of his decisions.

The performances in "Oppenheimer" are commendable, particularly Kylian Murphy in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Their portrayal captures the complexity of the character, showcasing Oppenheimer's brilliance, inner conflicts, and the toll that his involvement in the Manhattan Project took on him. The supporting cast also delivers strong performances, adding depth to the overall storytelling.

Additionally, the film's visual and technical aspects are noteworthy. The cinematography beautifully captures the era and settings, immersing the audience in the historical context. The attention to detail in the production design and costumes further enhances the authenticity of the film.

What sets "Oppenheimer" apart is its exploration of the ethical implications of scientific discovery. The movie raises important questions about the responsibility of scientists and the consequences of their creations. It invites viewers to reflect on the moral dilemmas faced by Oppenheimer and the ethical considerations that continue to surround scientific advancements.

Overall, "Oppenheimer" is a remarkable film that combines historical accuracy, strong performances, and thought-provoking storytelling. It sheds light on the life and complexities of J. Robert Oppenheimer while raising important ethical questions. Whether you're interested in history, science, or simply enjoy well-crafted cinema, "Oppenheimer" is a must-watch.

More than a biopic, this is a political thriller that points to the acts of vengeance, dark interests, and deceptions that build a government. Robert Downey Jr. is the star; he surely will get an Academy Award nomination.

Cut to within an inch of its life and scrambled out of sequence. It frustrated me by the end but it’s also the movie that convinced me that Nolan is capable of mastery and not just spectacle. The cinematography, script, acting, music: all stunning.

I’ve loved Nolan’s films with huge reservations for years. His major vice, in my opinion, is that he’s deeply insecure about his stories being interesting or intelligent enough on their own merits. So he chops them up into confusing chronologies and buries the dialogue behind a wall of sound design and music so that you’re figuratively leaning forward in your seat just trying to comprehend the most basic elements of the story and script. It feels like you’re interested but really you’re just confused. It’s kind of a sleight of hand on the part of the director.

After being irked by these tendencies in Inception and Interstellar and fully annoyed by them in Dunkirk, Tenet was the culmination of all of Nolan’s worst tendencies and I basically gave up on taking him seriously after that.

I’m happy to say that Oppenheimer rights many of these wrongs. There is no punishing Wagnerian score from Hanz Zimmer. Instead it’s thoughtfully and often minimally scored with whole chunks of blessed quiet. Finally! I understood 90 percent of the dialogue in this movie, even though it was often happening too fast to process. Unfortunately it’s yet another Nolan film told in a spaghetti of chronology. This was so unnecessary. This story, played by this cast, with that dialogue would have been riveting in basic chronological order. It’s also just way too long. As good as RDJ is in the part, his storyline hijacks the film and turns it into some showdown between an embittered man and a scientist, instead of what the film starts out as: a meditation on a complicated genius whose paradoxes may be hypocrisies. Had the film been shorter and with more space in it, you could have had more time to luxuriate in the ambiguity. I’m glad I saw it on a big screen. It was really beautiful. I loved all the abstract micro photography they cut in. Since Nolan has asked us to consider Oppenheimer’s hypocrisies and short sightedness (“How can someone who sees so much be so blind?”), I’m going to call him out on a bit of what I see as b.s. Nolan has come out as the patron saint for seeing films in theaters on the big, silver screen. This is now part of his brand. My hot take is that Nolan makes films that can’t be experienced or even understood properly in a single viewing. He makes films that are designed to be rewatched multiple times at home before they are comprehendible. He makes movies for the DVD, director's commentary generation. Movies that sometimes need reddit and reviews and comments sections to translate. As opposed to films which offer a complete experience in a single sitting. I think he is working at odds with his stated goals. I hope Nolan makes a movie this good where he gives up on needless complexity and recognizes the power of quiet and space. And that he finally makes another film like Memento or The Prestige which offers a complete experience on first viewing.

Very creative use of sound, vision, color and abstract visions to convey complex inner feelings/thoughts of the titular character. The performances across the board of the many a-list actors is fantastic as well. The 3-hours running time never felt long to me. Amazing to think this all really happened. Expand

It is a good film with great acting, but it is hampered by Nolan-isms and excessive dialogue.
> Related media: I have not read the book this film is based on called American Prometheus.
> Negatives:
> 1. The Nolan-isms present in Tenet are back! The two hearings mentioned above, being five years apart, are not covered chronologically. Then there are multiple flashbacks that are also not shown chronologically. Labels on the year of the event shown would have helped, but no... there is not a single one! Some scenes are shown in black and white to indicate they are close recreations of actual events, while the coloured scenes are dramatisations of other events. Smart-ass Nolan could have easily made this clear!
> 2. While I understand that this is a drama, there is too much dialogue, particularly when this is 3 hrs long (including credits). While the dialogue is somewhat engaging, the dialogue can be cut down by some 30 min and some of this replaced with more interesting scenes. This will unfortunately raise the film's cost of $100m by a lot however.
> 3. I had expected more coverage of the Manhattan Project work and did not expect than coverage of dialogue-heavy hearings.
> Positives:
> 1. It is a rather engaging film (engagement reduced due to length of film), with great acting from many.
> 2. It is an amazing effort to make a epic film for only $100m nowadays, considering the long list of actors, many of whom are respectable.
> How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Average (overly long, dialogue-heavy and hard to follow)
> Teens: Good > Young adults: Excellent > Medium-age adults: Excellent > Older adults: Excellent
> My rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Go watch it in the cinema (because it is good and everyone is discussing it now; if the movie had come out at other times, you should only need to catch it on TV.)

However, up until this point, the majority of his works have revolved around science fiction, and even with a film like Dunkirk in his repertoire, Oppenheimer is the film that feels like his graduation.

While this film might not be the magnum opus I had in mind, I reiterate that I judge based on results rather than expectations. Despite encountering a few execution and tonal hiccups, it remains a great piece of work and showcases Nolan's most mature and sober effort in his entire career.
And incidentally it's supported by an exceptional performance from Cillian Murphy who I believe has delivered the definitive role of his profession.

The cast is huge, but the big names are Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. who succeeds in completely shedding the Tony Stark persona. And it's not that I doubted he could pull it off, but there are a lot of people who only know him for that role.

I'll admit, the three-hour length doesn't really impact the film's overall performance, but it does affect how time is handled. Throughout the movie, we see jumps to various time periods, yet everything centers on the testing of the first nuclear bomb, which happens in the second hour. It's at this point that Oppenheimer takes a different turn, delving into the aftermath of the act and the devastating attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so the issues becomes about politics and moral repercussions.

It definitely doesn't change the effect of what the story is trying to tell but I could notice that the audience's reaction changed in that hour because everything after that moment is pure dialogue. As I said we are talking about something serious, but I can understand how some will be conflicted when their idea of entertainment is shaken by the fact that in that particular hour they are no longer building suspense but dealing with the consequences of what a legacy implies. And what a legacy we're talking about.

Oppenheimer delivers the goods and that's the most important thing about it.
It's a great movie that has to be seen in the big screen because it is made for them.

The movie has 3 main arches, 1. pre-war, 2. during war and 3. post-war. It tells some of Oppenheimer's background both in his career and personal life, tells about his actions and importance for the atomic bomb project during the war and also captures the administrative "trial" he faced afterwards, but the scenes and timelines are all mixed and delivered to us at the same time.
It's very Nolan, the atmosphere of the movie, the creativity, the way it hooks you, I think no one could have done better.
The movie can be very captivating, there is tension at times and how they presented to us the bombs trials is simply amazing.
I found myself really engaged with the movie and invested in the story, but not so much afeter a certain point. Unfortunately, the movie overstays its welcome a little bit, it should definitely be shorter. The third arch (the administrative hearings) which gets a bigger focus during the third section of the movie can be very tiring. The whole background story about his family and career before the war could be shorter too in order to make us less tired later on.
With all that being said, the movie is amazing, and I would recommend watching. The camera, colors, audio, every technical aspect is also a masterpiece.

I always look forward to going to the cinema and once again he didn't disappoint. After Tenet, which I thought was really hard to understand, this was a treat. Well made with good moments and made even better by the fact that it is history. I was sucked in right from the start as the various cuts that followed were nice and overall it grabbed me right from the start. I enjoyed every moment and waited until the explosion of course. That's what interested me the most. Again, I wasn't disappointed, but what mainly improved it was the audio. I was expecting a nice spectacle. I got that. I had pretty high expectations there, so it didn't wow me that much, but it appealed to me very positively with Ludwig Göransson's music, which always drew me into the story. Like how it's been described from the beginning of the movie "Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man...For this he was chained to a rock and tortured for all eternity".
And after actually realizing the purpose of this "gift" and after that silence after the bang you'd be left in horror to the to the consequences of this gift.
And that why Oppenheimer is not your usual biopic it's a horror.

It's gorgeous, fantastically acted, and it's decently written. Where Oppenheimer stumbles first is actually before the movie was released. Other than a 20 second explosion and bits and pieces of other shots this movie doesn't get elevated by an Imax camera, unless your main reason to see it in Imax was to be able to see the individual pores of Cillian Murphy. The dialogue suffers at times and the movie doesn't slow down for the first 2 hours, so you don't have time to draw closer to the characters or feel an emotional connection when something happens. It cuts very fast throughout Dr.Oppenheimer's life which makes for an entertaining watch as you are always on your toes in a new scene, but hurts the movie in terms of character development which makes for lifeless characters for a good portion of the movie. The score in confusing at times because it will pick up and add tension to a scene that didn't need tension so you are left with a weird unsatisfied feeling. There also wasn't any motifs in the movie, which made it feel like a 3 hour freestyle speeding up and slowing down depending on what's happening, it wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't add much to what was happening on screen. The last 45 minutes of the movie is where it shined. I felt impacted, emotional, and uncomfortable which is a good thing for the topic that is being covered. It made me think hard on the situation presented in Oppenheimer as I was leaving the theater which doesn't happen very often. The positives is what you will expect with Nolan, it's an excellent made movie, BUT I can't say this is a masterpiece or Nolans best. I have been debating with myself over a rating of 9/10 or 8.5/10, but for now I'm going to go with 8.5/10 Expand

I would say the "see it in IMAX" is far overblown. Overall, a great film that I will watch again but I do not feel this is Christopher Nolan's magnum opus, as Cillian has stated.

The first part has a few dull moments (witness the forced sound effects in an attempt to set the pace). The division into three timelines adds confusion, at the risk of losing us. On the whole, it remains interesting.

It's in the second half that the film takes off, offering us what Christopher Nolan does best: twists and turns, an unparalleled sense of narrative, and above all plenty to ponder both the events and its psychological and philosophical implications. This is how we forgive the length of the first part and bow to this breathless, morally pressing biography of Oppenheimer.

And his inner workings as well. We get an eerily grim look at what it means to be The Father of the Atom Bomb. When it comes to the character of Oppenheimer nothing escapes this movie. Everything from the moral complexities to the politics is investigated to the last detail.

Which is also the slight problem this movie has. There is a lot of "time travel" in this movie. And oftentimes scenes are cut in a way that makes it feel like the characters are having conversations with each other through the fabric of time.

It speaks well into the idea of quantum mechanics. So in that respect it's spot-on for the theme of the movie. But it is also slightly confusing to follow along with it.

And ultimately that leaves about 1 third of the movie in a bit of a weird half-confusing / dull limbo. At least to me.

I'd have liked it to focus more on the mechanics of developing the bomb itself. It didn't exactly glance over it as much as it neglected to focus on it. The parts are there but it rarely goes beyond merely mentioning their breakthroughs in conversation until we get to the initial big boom.

And that's probably a fault of my own expecting these things to be elaborated upon. The movie is called Oppenheimer and not The Manhattan Project after all.

So a heads up if you, like me, expect it to focus on The Manhattan Project. It does, but it's only a relatively short part of the movie and it is deliberately focused on Oppenheimer's character more so than the bomb itself during these parts.

And yet it is also a filmOppenheimer is a film that evokes mixed feelings in me. What is shown on screen is a convergence of enormous work in research, character studies, cinematic thinking of shots, great sound design and masterful acting. And yet it is also a film that you cannot easily recommend. Without research or prior knowledge, it is difficult to follow through rapid succession of conversations between many characters exploring the deeper layers of physics. In my opinion, Nolan also tried to build in a certain sense of tension through the excessive use of music in almost every conversation. It was a bit too much.

The film feels like it is working towards the climax in the form of the trinity test. However, this is just the start of a whole new political twist in the story that feels like a movie itself. As a result, for me personally it felt like I was watching an entire season of a series in one sitting. The whole thing felt like a long mush of information and content towards the end of the movie.

And yet, the message of the film. It's a painful reality that will never go away. Something that is food for thought long after you leave the cinema.

PS Come on Nolan…So much research for a movie but the so called Dutch language was painful to watch. As a Dutchman I could not understand one word.

A Beautiful Mess.

I feel like Christopher Nolan Stans will like this, but overall this seems to be a fine wine in a Red Flip Cup. The editing and pacing tends to skew from fast and engaging to slow and confusing. Nolan has been the master of show, don't tell and with this comes the central focus of Cillian Murphy as the real life Physicist, J Robert Oppenheimer.

From the opening shots you are drawn into a world according to Oppenheimer and his interactions with various people throughout his life of Theory to bringing in one of the most devastating weapons human's have ever created. This movie felt about 30-40 minutes too long, but I can understand why the director decided to keep a couple of the beats in there after the bomb and the consequences beyond blowing people up vs Oppenheimer's reputation. Like most Oscar Bait Films, you're kinda stuck with a one and done kinda watch.

Advertised to be a more mature evolution of Christopher Nolan movie but it suffers from the same problems as his other films. Outside of the genuinely astounding visuals and sound design, it plays out like a trailer of the movie itself. It's like he's trying to shove an entire series into a movie and I'd have been happy if half of it was cut out. It's kind of like a genius billionaire teenager made the movie. Another fun thing to do in the parts where you start losing concentration because you're only human: Imagine your face is the camera and notice just how many times you have to look around, or move in time, or change to black and white or witness a very odd sexual metaphor out of nowhere. It's a good movie, it's a LOT of movie, Cillian Murphy is great (other than him and Matt Damon, no one really get's a chance) but I can't imagine it being remembered as a great and I think these great reviews will subside eventually because it's a 3 hour music video.

If Steven Spielberg was hired as Nolan's directing coach then I think amazing things would happen.

For the story, the historical recreation, the photograpy, and the political story. WHY AVOID IT? The characters are completely unlikeable people, (so well-acted?) with some minor exceptions that are not really developed, it's soundtrack is mostly wierd and too loud, and the bomb explosion was a dud. SOME OBSERVATIONS: Three hours went by fast, so don't worry about it bogging down. However the soundtrack was distracting at many points during the film, like they were trying to keep it dramatic, and it was mostly way too loud, at least at our IMAX. The historical re-creation of the story was well done, and the photography was beautiful, but the cast of actors from other Chris Noman films looked older (and made me feel older, which is true!) and this reminded me of the old, 70's T.V. shows, like the Love Boat, that would feature a bevy of olden-days actors, (presumably because they need work to pay their property taxes!) When your thinking, "Hey, isn't that so-and-so from the Dark Knight," it is distracting. Yes, the characters depicted were very smart, but not likeable people, even in a nerdy way. None of the characters were likeable! Commies were everywhere in their circles, and for that time period, you'd think there would be more overt patriotism and a few nods to cultural religiosity, but there was practically none at all, which stood out to me as unrealistic. You wanted somebody to be a hero in this film, but no one was. I left the theatre feeling that I lost some hearing, that the ending wasn't satisfying, that it was a grifty up-sell shooting it in IMAX, and that "Fat Man and Little Boy" with John Cusak was a way better film. The cinematography, score and acting is some of the best in the industry. The cast is excellent. Each character executes their role with surgical precision. Robert Downey Jr. puts on a great show throughout the film, and whilst I don't think his performance is ground-breaking, RDJ manages to hold the floor every time he appears on screen. I think that after the almost 10 year stretch of solely playing Iron Man, a character he essentially became, people were keen to see "what's next?" for RDJ.

That being said, I think Oppenheimer falls victim to some of the same problems that spoiled Nolan's previous film, 'Tenet'. I spent a decent amount of time scratching my head thinking "what did he/she just say?". I have no idea why the dialogue in Nolan movies is often mixed as if it's some sort of secret, like we're not supposed to hear half of it. It's a lot better this time round but damn, it really makes no sense. I viewed this film in an IMAX theatre so from the average consumers perspective, there's not much more you can do to mitigate this issue.

Whilst I did not find myself getting bored at any point of the films 3 hour run-time, I did feel slightly overwhelmed with the amount of name-dropping throughout. I'm usually pretty quick to catch onto things in films, but especially in the 3rd Act where the film essentially turns into a court room drama, it becomes pretty cumbersome trying to keep up. This comes from someone who is not a history buff, so perhaps those well-versed in this field will have a much smoother experience.

Overall Oppenheimer is a good film for sure, there was never a point where I was pulled out of the experience, however it is marred by some of the same strange stylistic choices as some of Nolan's previous work.

Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors, so I left Oppenheimer sorely disappointed.

The entire movie jumps around between four timelines which is jaring, but the real problem with the movie is that it tries to cram in so much material that it doesn't leave enough time to develop any of the characters other than Openheimer. Every scene in the first forty minutes we're so rushed and then abruptly cut, that it felt like watching a recap on a trailer continuously.

As much as I love RDJ, the movie would have been better if they just cut out his character. I can tell you that by the end of the movie, no one cared about Lewis Strauss or his ambition to become a cabinet member to Eisenhower. The film did a poor job of developing Strauss as an antagonist. In the same vein, the film also does a poor job developing Kitty.

Overall, it's an okay movie, but it definitely does not live up to the hype, and it has been done before, but much, much better. This summer if you're looking for a film about a tortured scientist who gathers a crack team of brilliant minds to help end WW2 and changed the world forever, only to be discarded and persecuted after the war... I recommend you watch The Imitation Game.

The first 2 acts reminded me of 'The Imitation Game', which I enjoyed more, and for the life of me, I can not understand how there are that many people out there who enjoyed the final act of this movie, and are willing to rate it "10/10, best movie ever, top film of this decade".

If I was streaming it at home, I would have turned it off.. instead, I was sat in a packed cinema for 3 hours, waiting for the credits to role so I can go home.

There's something that still amazes me about the minimalism that fills all aspects of his productions, like how the sets are never bloated, how the characters are understated, from set design, to makeup and wardrobe.

So many directors want you to know it's 1945 or 1980 so damn hard, in all shots. Nolan doesn't do that, and in turn, you forget it and start living in the moment, which is whatever he says it is.

My problem with Oppenheimer was that it was the first Nolan film that had taken the interesting narrative elements from his other films in a really obvious way. Like the parallel black and white scenes like in Momento. Actors who were like chariciture's of real people, like in his Batman films, and it actually took away the authenticity of the story itself. It seemed like it was almost done to reign the film in and make it more approachable, but in return, took something away.

It just didn't seem grounded as all his other films were... in that sense.

The acting was just phenomenal, Emily Blunt, what an amazing role, everything that came out of her mouth was convincing. Overall, couldn't fault it and even with the actors that only had little roles. They all were authentic.

Except for Florence Pugh, out of all the characters, her's didn't feel relatable, and if anything, not real at all. Like Cobb's wife Mal, in Inception.

There are great performances here, as well as several arresting images and impressive sequences of editing, particularly during the Trinity test and when Oppenheimer addresses a rabid crowd of patriots after the bombings. But this viewer was left with an overwhelming and frustrating sense that the real story was ignored. Expand

That it was filmed in IMAX is hilarious because there's not a whole lot to look at except for actors talking. 99.9% dialog for 3 freakin' hours. No reason at all to even watch this in the theater, and the dialog is so boring at times that it seems even Nolan was aware of it and decided to splice in all these weird effects, loud music, rumbling bass, and other sounds to make it more interesting. There is ONE nail-biting scene in the whole thing, and that's when the test bomb goes off. Then it's followed by another hour or so of boring dialog, and overacting by Robert Downey Jr. Never seen a more bored looking audience, either. 2 people started clapping at the end and nobody joined them LOL. Half of them were stretching like they'd fallen asleep.

Don't believe the hype.

Oppenheimer may be a great movie for some, but the historical context still remains because there have been some inaccuracies relating to the film. Not a bad movie, but not great either.

Be sure to study as this film expects the audience to know the storyline and history before watching. Without prior knowledge of events and characters portrayed it makes the movie very difficult/impossible to understand what’s going on.

Oppenheimer is a masterpiece of cinema that explores the life and work of one of the most influential and controversial scientists of the 20th century. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is a gripping and nuanced portrait of J. RobertOppenheimer is a masterpiece of cinema that explores the life and work of one of the most influential and controversial scientists of the 20th century. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is a gripping and nuanced portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and his role in the Manhattan Project, the secret program that developed the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

The film boasts an impressive cast of actors, led by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, who delivers a captivating performance as the brilliant and tormented physicist. Murphy portrays Oppenheimer’s genius, ambition, moral dilemmas, and personal struggles with remarkable depth and subtlety. Emily Blunt is equally compelling as his wife Katherine, who supports him through his professional and emotional challenges. The film also features Matt Damon as Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, the military leader of the project, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a political adversary of Oppenheimer, and Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr, a mentor and friend of Oppenheimer.

The film is not only a biographical drama, but also a historical thriller that recreates the tense and dramatic events that led to the creation and use of the atomic bomb. The film shows the scientific breakthroughs, the ethical debates, the political intrigues, and the human consequences of the project with stunning realism and accuracy. The film also uses innovative cinematography and visual effects to depict the nuclear tests and explosions in breathtaking detail.

Oppenheimer is a film that will leave you speechless and moved by its powerful story and its profound implications. It is a film that honors the legacy of Oppenheimer and his colleagues, but also questions their responsibility and accountability for unleashing a new era of warfare and destruction. It is a film that challenges you to think about the moral and ethical issues of science and technology, and their impact on humanity and history. It is a film that you should not miss.

This movie was about 1.5 hours longer than it needed to be. The storyline was good, but dragged on in parts where it was unnecessary. I also struggled at times due to the way it jumped around in time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. in a nutshell: an incredible historical, scientifical and human story transformed into a quite boring legal drama. Unfortunately, its not really a movie about the making of the bomb, is a movie about the paranoia of mccarthyism and love stories of the main character. For anyone who has read the utterly compelling "The making of the atomic bomb" by Richard Rhodes this movie is a disappointment. Expand

The movie I watched had an extremely slow beginning and was poorly edited - jumping back and forth through time without really every explaining what was going on. It's as if they were trying to do quantum mathematics instead of simple addition that easily told a concise story. Too many loose ends. The middle portion of the movie was strong, but overall too much repetition of material and too much jumping around. Matt Damon was the worst actor in the movie. He has become a caricature of himself. When he walks on screen - you see Matt Damon, not a General. All the other actors blend in nicely and give great performances. Expand

But somehow this one got away from him. He tried his darnedest to make this good by adding loud music and cutting all over the place between multiple time periods, but we're nevertheless left with a story where very few interesting things happen. Maybe 5 interesting things in 3 hours, and you already know one of them. The other 4? I've already forgotten. Some of the acting is good here, including Cillian in the lead. He deserves a better movie for his commitment to the role. A lot of actors feel miscast here, from the well known to the less well known. Downy? Miscast. Damon? Miscast. Both key supporting roles I was keenly aware were being played by those actors doing a schtick. The best thing I can say about this film is that some of the cinematography is nice. Were you to pause it and just enjoy the scene on a visual level, it works. As for the script, the dialogue was quite poor apart from a few great lines. Not enough subtlety. Characters will just say things to Oppenheimer like: "You *are* the great improvisor." or "You *are* the man who brought Quantum Physics to the United States." Uhhhhhhhh, ok. He's "the great improvisor," I'm told. Because that's something a real person would say to their boss. I promise you, whoever's reading this, I'm not an angry internet troll, I'm not a bot, and this is not a stunt score. Oppenheimer is a colossal misfire. Expand

Unfortunately, when you set aside the acting and technical proficiency"Oppenheimer" uses sound and its terrific cast to avoid total collapsing under the weight of its ambition. Cillian Murphy is exceptional and essentially carries the movie. Unfortunately, when you set aside the acting and technical proficiency of "Oppenheimer", the movie is emotionally inert, overly expository, poorly paced and structured, shallow, unfocused, and underdeveloped.

Nolan showed with "Interstellar" that he is capable of making emotionally resonant films but I left "Oppenheimer" feeling nothing. Cillian Murphy does so much with his subtle facial expressions but the script does not give him enough room to explore the psyche of his character. Part of the reason lies in the dialogue. "Oppenheimer" consists mostly of scenes of people in rooms talking. This is not inherently bad - "The Social Network" proves that movies about people talking in rooms can be riveting and engaging - but in "Oppenheimer" the dialogue is mostly just people explaining what is happening so that the audience can follow. The golden rule of storytelling is show, don't tell. "Oppenheimer" is 90% telling. This is part of the reason why the movie feels so long. Another reason why the movie feels so long is because of the pacing. We are constantly jumping between timelines and this non-linear structure does not service the story in any way. If anything it just makes the film disorienting. "Oppenheimer" also feels clunky due to its lack of focus. What is the movie about? It is partly about Oppenheimer's personal relationships, partly about Oppenheimer's rise as a scientific titan, partly about the development of the bomb, partly about Oppenheimer being accused of being disloyal to his country, and partly about Oppenheimer fighting against political opposition. I can't help but feel that a movie focused on a few of these aspects would have been more powerful and effective.

"Oppenheimer" would have also benefited from having more complex and dynamic characters. One of Nolan's biggest weaknesses is writing female characters, and nowhere is this more apparent than it is with "Oppenheimer". Two excellent actresses, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh, are severely underused. If "Oppenheimer" was interested in exploring the main character's personal relationships then you would think that these female characters would have been given more things to do or say. Oppenheimer as a character feels underdeveloped too, which is strange considering we spend 3 hours with him. By the end of the film I did not feel like I knew more about who Oppenheimer was as a person, only the broad strokes of what he did and who he did it with.

In the end "Oppenheimer" feels very surface level and safe. The premise of a scientist building a destructive weapon and feeling conflicted about its use to kill hundreds of thousands of people is ripe for exploring moral, philosophical, and even existential questions. "Oppenheimer" seems reluctant to challenge the viewer in this regard. I would go further and argue that Nolan seems reluctant as a director to show the true horrors of the devastation caused by the bombs. For me this choice is not brilliant but rather irresponsible.

If you know nothing about Oppenheimer beforehand then you will most likely enjoy this movie. If you like movies with star-studded casts then will probably like the movie too. The acting is what saves the film from being a complete waste of time. It really is nice to see RDJ play a character that is not Iron Man for a change.

It was clearly produced with a bent political agenda, because it almost seemed like two movies loosely strung together; the first about Oppenheimer coordinating scientists to build the bomb, and the second about how he was a marter for doing so. It was hard to follow with all of the needlessly back-and-forth cut scenes to Oppenheimer's past and then to his future, and so forth. And did we really need all of the drama with him and his wives?! Just a wasted opportunity! Not to mention the volume....it was so overly loud in some points and so soft at others; this movie was just painful to watch, especially near the end. I wish I'd gone to see Barbie instead. Expand
