Being based on the book "American Prometheus," we get the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer who was brought on by Lewis Strauss to helm the Manhattan Project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb but Nolan's focus was on the mam himself and not the bomb which proves to be brilliant as we get a deep and haunting character study of the aftermath and see how this action led to not only thousands of deaths in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but the guilt and weight that the "man who moved the earth" was forced to live with. Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer proves to be the best casting choice made for this biopic as his eyes in close-ups tell you everything you need to know about what he's thinking, but in addition this brilliant actor conveys so much conviction and deep regret for all of his skeletons that you're left with a broken man who started off doing something monumental with ambitious intentions but slowly realizes what he's just actually done to the rest of the world, but Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss has my lock already for Best Supporting Actor with what could be his best career work as a man who proves to be more than an antagonist in this film.

Nolan's love for practical effects sees him deliver a truly monumental achievement as there's not one single shot of CGI in this film, which is combined with some gorgeous cinematography from Hoyte Van Hoytema but Ludwig Gorranson's music for this film might be his best ever as it cues and swells all throughout the 3-hour runtime and makes this film feel like a thriller and horror movie because of how intense it can get depending on the scene and characters it's focused on ay the moment. Emily Blunt might also get a Beat Supporting Actress nomination as her work as Oppenheimer's wife Kitty sees her as a woman who endures just as much of the pain her husband does as she tries her best to support him even when the walls are closing in and her scene in the final act of this film during an interrogation is just spectacular, and the number of actors in this film is just beyond ridiculous ranging from Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck, and many many more. With this being a 3-hour runtime, the film feels as if it's missing 30 minutes somewhere as it flows better than most films of this length as the dialogue and characters keep you hooked within the story especially as the story is weaving between the color scenes which are completely subjective to Oppenheimer while the black and white are objective to everyone else, but the strength is how much this film paints the man as a deeply complex character with his past demons exposed but also someone who understood the repercussions and fallout from the contributions to something revolutionary and I honestly can't wait to revisit this again. Nolan proves yet again why he's one of the most important filmmakers working today as he made a mature and profound dramatic biopic about one of the most important men in American and world history.

COM-PELL-ING

Nolan shows, once again, that he is one of the greatest story tellers and film makers of our time. The screenplay brings everything together and it makes a great job of making something that is stereotypically difficult to understand, such as a little thing as theoretical and nuclear phyics, as something that a general audience member could consume by explaining things via marbles and whatnot. On the contrary and simultaneously, Nolan masters the art of plot movement with high stakes scene choreography from different moments in time. Having this and Barbie in theatres at the same time reminds why cinema truly matters and that all good story telling needs is just good story telling, no matter the genre or medium. This movie was the **** bomb (pun intended accidentally on purpose)

A movie that isn't afraid to let the audience think for themselves, and offers no ready answers to the moral and ethical dilemmas presented. The film did not come into any conclusions for you wheter or not Oppenheimer was truly remorseful and to what extent - nor if he should be.

The non-linear storytelling was easy and logical to follow, science was made easy to understand. Historical accuracy was on point, and the movie paid great attention to the global geopolitical situation that guided the urgency for creating an atomic bomb. The ramifications of what this group of scientists achieved will be felt by all future generations, and I enjoyed the trust put on audiences; how there was no handholding in pointing out how and why that is. A lesser director would've painted scenes of potential disastrous outcomes just to shove this point across.

Sadly, Oppenheimer as an individual did not receive such a deep analysis in this film, more emphasis was put onto his legacy and title as the Father of the Atomic Bomb. We did not see how he was as a friend or a father, and the glimpses we saw him as a husband was based on the limited historical facts that weren't expanded upon. Very bare bones writing on the human aspects of characters, but it was elated by a stellar cast. In true Nolan style, the characters were clinical and the focus was on their intellectuality rather than their humanity. Makes sense in a movie focusing so heavily on the science, but what truly would connect an audience to characters is the glimpse we might see into the very human soul behind all their achievements.

The visual were magnificent. Stylistic choices were well-thought and elevated the storytelling. The mixture of black-and-white with colour worked supremely well, as well as the stylized scenes whenever we jumped into a Oppenheimer's point of view. A very down to earth style of film, simple without needless pomp where it wasn't necessary. That simplicity made the actual bomb scene stand out all the more.

For me, the audio design was the star of this movie. So much to read to in the audio, and propably need another 2 viewings to properly appreciate it in words. The audio mixing is also the best yet in a Nolan film. His films are notorious for being so full of sound that the dialogue is drowned out (I'm looking at you, Tenet!). But in this film there was only one part where dialogue was hard to hear clearly, and that was the first few minutes of the film.

Wish I could give this a 9,5. For me, it's not quite worth a 10, but 9 seems inadequate.

The theater where I watched it had the sound so loud that the voices were distorted. On top of that, the movie can't go 60 seconds with excessively loud, dramatic mood music covering the dialog. The movie also loves explosions -- not just The Bomb, but explosions even when Oppenheimer is contemplating the cosmos.

Matt Damon as General Grove was my favorite character. He lit up the screen whenever he showed up. Robert Downey Jr. also did an excellent job as Lewis Strauss.

I was hoping for more coverage of the work of the scientists developing the bomb, but that was almost completely skipped. The focus of the movie is Oppenheimer's personal life, his loves, his torments, and his political problems.

Além disso, a cinematografia é deslumbrante.

For the story, the historical recreation, the photograpy, and the political story. WHY AVOID IT? The characters are completely unlikeable people, (so well-acted?) with some minor exceptions that are not really developed, it's soundtrack is mostly wierd and too loud, and the bomb explosion was a dud. SOME OBSERVATIONS: Three hours went by fast, so don't worry about it bogging down. However the soundtrack was distracting at many points during the film, like they were trying to keep it dramatic, and it was mostly way too loud, at least at our IMAX. The historical re-creation of the story was well done, and the photography was beautiful, but the cast of actors from other Chris Noman films looked older (and made me feel older, which is true!) and this reminded me of the old, 70's T.V. shows, like the Love Boat, that would feature a bevy of olden-days actors, (presumably because they need work to pay their property taxes!) When your thinking, "Hey, isn't that so-and-so from the Dark Knight," it is distracting. Yes, the characters depicted were very smart, but not likeable people, even in a nerdy way. None of the characters were likeable! Commies were everywhere in their circles, and for that time period, you'd think there would be more overt patriotism and a few nods to cultural religiosity, but there was practically none at all, which stood out to me as unrealistic. You wanted somebody to be a hero in this film, but no one was. I left the theatre feeling that I lost some hearing, that the ending wasn't satisfying, that it was a grifty up-sell shooting it in IMAX, and that "Fat Man and Little Boy" with John Cusak was a way better film. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant physicist who led the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. Although this film details that effort, there's a wider story about politicians' efforts to undermine his achievements with accusations of his Communist leanings. Murphy grounds the story with an intense characterization and he's surrounded by an impressive cast of strong performances. But this is really director Christopher Nolan's show. His manipulation of media to create powerful moments is undeniable and there are several memorable sequences like that here. While the complex story is always compelling, it could have been a shorter than 3 hours and Nolan's investigation leans more on the cerebral than the emotional. As a result, this landmark story is told with powerful facts and skilled filmmaking. Expand

Right from the opening scene, a dangerous seed is germinating in the mind of Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer. He's being tortured by it.Right from the opening scene, a dangerous seed is germinating in the mind of Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer. It's growing, slowly and steadily, sprouting into different corners of his mind - infecting him. He's being tortured by it. In one corner, he has the power to end World War II and save countless lives in the process. In the other corner, his findings mark a turning point for humanity. He's unleashed the most terrifying weapon ever conceived. And Oppenheimer knows it's power. He knows the threat it poses. But this seed, this plant in his mind is telling him that at all costs, he has to end the war. And that overpowers him.

It's an epic, a historical epic at that, but a visual marvel and a technical masterpiece nonetheless. But as much as Nolan prepares you for the spectacle that will follow, nothing can prepare you for the character study you get to witness. Headed by the performance of the year from Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer never ceases in his relentless advance to horrify you. He finds humanity in conversations with peers and love interests, but he's being destroyed, corrupted by his own mind. A ferocious battle takes place throughout the movie, but it's not in the warzone, it's inside the thoughts of the leading man. He's under an enormous amount of stress that nobody on the face of the current planet can realise. It's not possible to perceive this man's life. Being suddenly wrapped up in a ridiculous plot to build a machine that can split and atom in two. Just picture an atom. You can't possibly. It's inconceivably small, nobody has ever seen one. And he's trying to harness the power of that process to kill hundreds of thousands of people. That should give you can idea of the inhumanity of this film.

Which brings me neatly on to my final point on the writing. You'd think a film about Oppenheimer, the man who created the bomb that was unleashed onto Hiroshima and Nagasaki, would fixate heavily on those two events. It doesn't, and that was a delightful surprise to me. Everyone knows the destruction caused by the bomb in those cities. But to truly get us into the mind of Oppenheimer, we're not allowed to see it. Because Oppenheimer wouldn't have. He could only imagine the event, and I believe that would horrify him more than anything else. Imagine you've built the bomb. You can witness the test, but you can't see the results. You know what you've made will cause death to the fullest extent, and I can only imagine how much absolute pain that would cause you. I've never watched a proper documentary on Oppenheimer. I know who he is and what he's done, but I had no perspective on his life at all. In 3 hours, Nolan has told me everything I need to know about him. It's a testament to him as a brilliant director and screenwriter, but it's a testament to Cillian Murphy in equal fashion.

It would be an understatement to say that Murphy 'goes on a rollercoaster of emotions' throughout the duration of Oppenheimer. It's more like, if you put him on a rollercoaster, removed all safety gear, fired him into space and made him scale Mount Everest, all in an hour. By the end what he's showing can't even be defined as emotions. It's something nobody other than him has experienced. You look at Oppenheimer and see a man contorted with grief, guilt and riddled still with the same moral questions from 20 years prior. It's as if he's not even present at the meetings. He's a shell of a human. And the fact that Cillian does all this while giving complex lectures about quantum physics, the politics of the project, and surviving on a single almond is just phenomenal. I know that DiCaprio probably gives an immense performance later in the year in "Killers of the Flower Moon", but please, Academy, please give it to Cillian, he **** deserves it. The whole cast deserves an Oscar to be honest. Robert Downey Jr. was note perfect. Absolutely the star of the show in the scenes without Oppy. And Emily Blunt too, what a performance. Especially that one scene, which, if you've seen the movie, you'll know what I'm referring to when I say it was exceptional. It's just a genius movie all-round, suffering from a few pacing issues at the start and towards the end, but everything else is phenomenal. The sound was stunning, the sets, costume and makeup were all historically accurate as far as I could tell. Just impeccable. Thank you, Nolan. Perhaps one of the only filmmakers still around where you just know every single one of his movies that comes out will be top notch. Without fail, not a single miss in his filmography. I'm excited for Scorsese and Villeneuve's projects this year as well, because they are the only ones, along with Nolan, that I can rely on to give me a masterpiece. Tarantino also gets the same treatment from me, but no movies this year from him unfortunately.

Already booked to rewatch this in IMAX in a few days. This is just a regular viewing, I can only imagine how amazing an IMAX one will be!

The scope of the film was ambitious, but if there's anyone that can do it, it's Christopher Nolan. The visuals are almost all practical and it pays off, this movie is stunning to look at from the first frame to its last. The cinematography also plays a part in this. The cast, acting, and dialogue are all perfectly selected, acted, and written. Specifically, the acting from Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh are all phenomenal. The pacing is fantastic though once you get to the court scenes towards the end of the movie it can drag a little, but it's nothing drastic The message of the movie being "just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should" is perfect for Robert Oppenheimer's story. The movie is great in IMAX just like Nolan promised, though I don't believe it is necessary to get the full experience of the movie like he said. The reality is, I don't see any obvious negatives to this film so this is a rare 10 out of 10 movie for me, and I hope everyone gets to go see it. Expand

My first ever Christopher Nolan movie in cinema and surely it didn't disappoint. It had a bit of everything from romance, suspense, drama and even what they say it was truly horrifying. Surely set to become one of the iconics.
When we talk about cinematography we have to talk about Nolan and so this movie had it all, some exceptional shots and most of them including Cillian Murphy. The two colour tones provide an immersive experience like never before sort of taking you back in time and experiencing it all yourself. Nolan has done such a good job that I'm literally lost for words, can't explain what I've just seen, it's more than just a movie.
You can really tell it's my first movie review. Well then comes Cillian Murphy's brilliant performance as it was truly expected. Has to win an Oscar I'm sure, this performance was truly backed up by what RDJ did. THAT was pure acting, which I'm more sure than Cillian that he'll win an Oscar. Even the side roles including Rami Malek, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Tom Conti showed that they're A tier actors taking this film to a whole new level. And then talk about Ludwig Goransson, he has just done an excellent job, even though he had a whole lot of pressure on his shoulders taking Zimmer's role in hand and he didn't let us down. Every scene had its own moment delving you into it's beauty. Well for me the peak was the music from THAT trinity test scene. That scene would take a whole lot of speaking but boy was that good. How do I even put this that this movie was simply outstanding. 9.5/10 from me.

It was like 500 fragments of conversations somehow soldered together. I know that Christopher Nolan was seeking an innovative style - and in part - it worked; but still - even though I was familiar with Oppenheimer's life - I found the final product dysfunctional and confusing (like having dozens of jigsaw pieces thrown randomly at you – and expecting you to put them together – even though you’re blindfolded). It needed some kind of a narrative voice giving background to an unknowing audience as to what was going on throughout the film (perhaps, like a witness on a witness stand - or a diarist looking back and recalling the events of the time). It's gorgeous, fantastically acted, and it's decently written. Where Oppenheimer stumbles first is actually before the movie was released. The movie was promoted that it was made to be seen in Imax and that is was a masterpiece just because Nolan made it, so we should trust him that he outdid himself to make a masterpiece. Other than a 20 second explosion and bits and pieces of other shots this movie doesn't get elevated by an Imax camera, unless your main reason to see it in Imax was to be able to see the individual pores of Cillian Murphy. The dialogue suffers at times and the movie doesn't slow down for the first 2 hours, so you don't have time to draw closer to the characters or feel an emotional connection when something happens. It cuts very fast throughout Dr.Oppenheimer's life which makes for an entertaining watch as you are always on your toes in a new scene, but hurts the movie in terms of character development which makes for lifeless characters for a good portion of the movie. The score in confusing at times because it will pick up and add tension to a scene that didn't need tension so you are left with a weird unsatisfied feeling. There also wasn't any motifs in the movie, which made it feel like a 3 hour freestyle speeding up and slowing down depending on what's happening, it wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't add much to what was happening on screen. The last 45 minutes of the movie is where it shined. I felt impacted, emotional, and uncomfortable which is a good thing for the topic that is being covered. It made me think hard on the situation presented in Oppenheimer as I was leaving the theater which doesn't happen very often. The positives is what you will expect with Nolan, it's an excellent made movie, BUT I can't say this is a masterpiece or Nolans best. I have been debating with myself over a rating of 9/10 or 8.5/10, but for now I'm going to go with 8.5/10 Expand

Nolan’s three-hour opus about the life of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), director of the Manhattan Project (and more commonly known as the Father of the Atomic Bomb), provides viewers with a comprehensive biography of this brilliant and thoughtful yet often-inscrutable and naïve physicist who took on a patently dangerous venture that left him morally conflicted about the nature of his creation. The story, which spans several decades of the scientist’s life, chronicles his development of “the gadget” and the fallout he suffered as a consequence of his left-wing political leanings and his efforts to keep the released nuclear genie from getting out of control. The film is admittedly a little overlong and probably could have used some editing in the opening and final hour, but, in the interest of telling the whole story of Oppenheimer’s odyssey, its length is understandable (and, consequently, justifiable). The picture’s production values are all top shelf, especially its brilliant cinematography, stirring original score and superb sound quality, an element that truly leaves audiences with a bona fide visceral experience. Moreover, the narrative is skillfully and eloquently brought to life by this offering’s outstanding ensemble cast, including Murphy, Matt Damon, Tom Conti, Benny Safdie, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, and, especially, Robert Downey Jr., who delivers a stellar, award-worthy supporting performance showing acting chops that I never knew he possessed. “Oppenheimer” is easily the best film of the summer movie season, if not all of 2023 thus far. It packs a potent punch and delivers a message that we can all never hear too often, poignantly reminding us all of the importance of not falling prey to the same Promethean burden that Oppenheimer was forced to shoulder. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors, so I left Oppenheimer sorely disappointed.

The entire movie jumps around between four timelines which is jaring, but the real problem with the movie is that it tries to cram in so much material that it doesn't leave enough time to develop any of the characters other than Openheimer. Every scene in the first forty minutes we're so rushed and then abruptly cut, that it felt like watching a recap on a trailer continuously.

As much as I love RDJ, the movie would have been better if they just cut out his character. I can tell you that by the end of the movie, no one cared about Lewis Strauss or his ambition to become a cabinet member to Eisenhower. The film did a poor job of developing Strauss as an antagonist. In the same vein, the film also does a poor job developing Kitty.

Overall, it's an okay movie, but it definitely does not live up to the hype, and it has been done before, but much, much better. This summer if you're looking for a film about a tortured scientist who gathers a crack team of brilliant minds to help end WW2 and changed the world forever, only to be discarded and persecuted after the war... I recommend you watch The Imitation Game.

In a 3 hour spectacular movie that demandsNolan’s back again only this time with a biography about “the father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer. Prepare yourself for a Summer blockbuster unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. In a 3 hour spectacular movie that demands your full attention. Spanning from Oppenheimer’s early life, his time leading the Manhattan project & the creation of the devastating bomb that the Americans used to end the war. See it on the big screen like you’ll never believe. And if you have the opportunity to see it in 35/70mm or IMAX then take it.

It really is an amazing achievement to create a movie that is essentially people talking in different rooms for 3 hours & have it being one of the year’s greatest movies. Directed by a true master filmmaker, Christopher Nolan has further cemented himself as one of the best and he’s the best for a reason. The trailer gave us only a taste of what’s in store. Although knowing the outcome, the sheer level of tension packed into this film is enthralling. It perfectly captures the overly ambitious men in their mission to create something that no one should ever have – “now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” Oppenheimer is an expertly crafted story that is horrifying, chilling & will leave you in awe.

You are watching a Christopher Nolan film which means don’t expect time to be linear, it’s told across various different time periods from Oppenheimer’s studies at Cambridge, the beginning of the Manhattan project, the trinity test in 1945 and the subsequent controversies in Oppenheimer’s later life. It can be a little confusing as one would expect from a Nolan movie but it uses a mix of colour and black and white shots to illustrate different character point of views.

It certainly deserves all the awards coming to it & there are so many Oscar worthy performances with the stand out one being Cillian Murphy. After years of working together, Murphy has finally been given the chance at a lead in a Nolan movie & he really shows us what a stunning actor he really is. His performance is haunting, he’s in almost every scene & was the perfect choice to play a guilt ridden Oppenheimer. Although much of the weight is carried by Cillian Murphy, Nolan has always understood the importance of a strong supporting cast. They consist of Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie & Tom Conti. That’s not even all of them, the list is very impressive and each & every one of them brought their best to Oppenheimer. When Nolan calls, you say yes because it doesn’t matter if you’re only in one scene, you’re in a damn Christopher Nolan movie.

With amazing practical effects, it’s a movie clearly made for the big screen. That’s right you read that correctly it’s practical effects, no CGI. Nolan has always prioritised real sets, real effects & no he didn’t set off a real atomic bomb but the entire trinity test sequence is mesmerizing to witness & you really do want to see it on the biggest screen possible. Everything from the sound & editing will scar scenes into your mind forever. The crowd sequence afterwards is one of the most haunting things I’ve ever seen on film & the way in which Cillian Murphy conveys the horror of what he’s created is a masterclass in acting. With so many layers, the beauty of Nolan’s movies is you get something new with every rewatch. It’s powerful and does not shy away from the dark side of humanity in the creation of a devastating weapon of war. A cinematic masterpiece. Sound & music are always used very effectively in Nolan’s movies & Ludwig Göransson delivers yet another stunning score that perfectly captures the emotions surrounding a dark moment in human history. So much emotion expressed through the violin, it’s a sensational movie score.

Honestly I’ll be thinking about this film for weeks afterwards. For anyone who’s been left emotionally traumatised after the experience then fear not because as luck would have it, the perfect film is available to de-stress after Oppenheimer. The polar opposite to a historical biopic, Barbie is also out, in what looks like cinema’s most successful weekend in years. Audiences are jaded from the endless parade of remakes and sequels to already well established franchises but more of these original stories made by proper filmmakers will be the saviour to struggling cinemas. And the question was never which one do you want to see, it’s which one do you want to see first. It’s terrific to see so many people enjoying themselves in the cinema for these movies & whichever you went to see first this weekend I hope you enjoyed it.

Am I recommending Oppenheimer? Of course I am, Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors but whether you’re a fan or not, if you love film then Oppenheimer is a must see. It’s a jaw dropping film that will leave you speechless.

O inicio do filme é bem difícil pelos diversos nomes, localidades e saltos temporais, mas quando engrena vai com tudo e no final faz mais sentido. A trilha sonora é o que mais gostei no filme e a tensão que ela proporciona em diversas cenas. A atuação do Cillian Murphy é memorável. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These reviews must be paid for. While the movie did have great acting, it certainly did not make up for the fact that it was incredibly tedious and boring.

I love quantum physics and was expecting an interesting delve into the science behind the creation of nuclear weapons, instead we received an extremely long, drawn out political biopic. Other than Cilian Murphy's fantastic job of portraying Oppenheimer, none of the characters were interesting in the slightest. I had no emotional investment whatsoever.

After the build up to the trinity event, the payoff was abysmal. The one single shot of a nuclear explosion didn't look anything like an actual nuclear explosion, and they completely glossed over the events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The last 45 minutes of the movie could best be described as torture.

I really wondered how they were going to make a 3 hour film on Oppenheimer interesting, turns out: they didn't. Probably the most tedious movie I've ever had to sit through.

Another great movie by Nolan. While it doesnt try to go for a mind-twisting epic, the movie portrais a masterfull drama of Oppenheimer.

I always look forward to going to the cinema and once again he didn't disappoint. After Tenet, which I thought was really hard to understand, this was a treat. Well made with good moments and made even better by the fact that it is history. I was sucked in right from the start as the various cuts that followed were nice and overall it grabbed me right from the start. I enjoyed every moment and waited until the explosion of course. That's what interested me the most. Again, I wasn't disappointed, but what mainly improved it was the audio. I was expecting a nice spectacle. I got that. I had pretty high expectations there, so it didn't wow me that much, but it appealed to me very positively with Ludwig Göransson's music, which always drew me into the story. At one point, he had me pretty well riveted with his music as well. I was a little worried about how it would turn out without Hans Zimmer, but it turned out that it wasn't only Tenet who had such a great soundtrack, at least in my opinion. I liked the music. Expand

Really a phenomenal piece of filmmaking by writer and director Christopher Nolan, the story centered around the Father of the Atomic Bomb and leader of The Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, J. Robert Oppenheimer, played to perfection by actor Cillian Murphy. Worth noting, as well is the extraordinary performance by actor Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss. It wouldn't surprise me if both actors receive Oscar nominations for their character portrayals, they are that good! Also great in supporting roles, Emily Blunt (Kitty Oppenheimer), Matt Damon (General Leslie Groves), Jason Clarke (Roger Robb) and an appearance by Gary Oldman as President Truman. Returning as Nolan's DOP is Hoyte van Hoytema (Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet) whose cinematography in Oppenheimer is breathtaking. Love the new black and white photography created especially for the film, it is sharp, clean and crisp. Just like in Nolan's 2000 film, Memento, the black and white is juxtaposed with color, perfectly utilized for past and present scenes and as a way to interpret the lead character's moral struggles and ambiguity. I had no problem with the 3 hour runtime, dialogue was intelligent and the film moves at a good pace thanks to streamlined editing by Jennifer Lame (Tenet) and a strong, haunting score by Ludwig Göransson (Tenet). Oppenheimer is quite the triumph for Chris Nolan. Expand

The final cut manages to stick the landing, even with expectations reaching critical mass. Although I was confused why Scarecrow was never mentioned by name, or why he never even put on his burlap mask once. I still found his villain arc interesting, from terrorizing major city populations with fear-based drugs, to eventually dropping two nuclear bombs on the Japanese. Scarecrow is a complex character.

I thought the post credits would tease the next Batman, but I must have missed it.

Unfortunately, when you set aside the acting and technical proficiency"Oppenheimer" uses sound and its terrific cast to avoid total collapsing under the weight of its ambition. Cillian Murphy is exceptional and essentially carries the movie. Unfortunately, when you set aside the acting and technical proficiency of "Oppenheimer", the movie is emotionally inert, overly expository, poorly paced and structured, shallow, unfocused, and underdeveloped.

Nolan showed with "Interstellar" that he is capable of making emotionally resonant films but I left "Oppenheimer" feeling nothing. Cillian Murphy does so much with his subtle facial expressions but the script does not give him enough room to explore the psyche of his character. Part of the reason lies in the dialogue. "Oppenheimer" consists mostly of scenes of people in rooms talking. This is not inherently bad - "The Social Network" proves that movies about people talking in rooms can be riveting and engaging - but in "Oppenheimer" the dialogue is mostly just people explaining what is happening so that the audience can follow. The golden rule of storytelling is show, don't tell. "Oppenheimer" is 90% telling. This is part of the reason why the movie feels so long. Another reason why the movie feels so long is because of the pacing. We are constantly jumping between timelines and this non-linear structure does not service the story in any way. If anything it just makes the film disorienting. "Oppenheimer" also feels clunky due to its lack of focus. What is the movie about? It is partly about Oppenheimer's personal relationships, partly about Oppenheimer's rise as a scientific titan, partly about the development of the bomb, partly about Oppenheimer being accused of being disloyal to his country, and partly about Oppenheimer fighting against political opposition. I can't help but feel that a movie focused on a few of these aspects would have been more powerful and effective.

"Oppenheimer" would have also benefited from having more complex and dynamic characters. One of Nolan's biggest weaknesses is writing female characters, and nowhere is this more apparent than it is with "Oppenheimer". Two excellent actresses, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh, are severely underused. If "Oppenheimer" was interested in exploring the main character's personal relationships then you would think that these female characters would have been given more things to do or say. Oppenheimer as a character feels underdeveloped too, which is strange considering we spend 3 hours with him. By the end of the film I did not feel like I knew more about who Oppenheimer was as a person, only the broad strokes of what he did and who he did it with.

In the end "Oppenheimer" feels very surface level and safe. The premise of a scientist building a destructive weapon and feeling conflicted about its use to kill hundreds of thousands of people is ripe for exploring moral, philosophical, and even existential questions. "Oppenheimer" seems reluctant to challenge the viewer in this regard. I would go further and argue that Nolan seems reluctant as a director to show the true horrors of the devastation caused by the bombs. For me this choice is not brilliant but rather irresponsible.

If you know nothing about Oppenheimer beforehand then you will most likely enjoy this movie. If you like movies with star-studded casts then will probably like the movie too. The acting is what saves the film from being a complete waste of time. It really is nice to see RDJ play a character that is not Iron Man for a change.

The actors killed it, and Christopher Nolan, as always, delivered mind-bending story-telling through compelling and beautiful sound, music, images, effects, and cadence.

I got lost several times during the movie because of the absolute unit density of the film, but nothing that re-watching won't fix.

10/10. Obligatoria de Ver. Expand
