Hey, at least you can end up being ashamed of yourselves after giving that review to this movie. Haven't you people ever heard of this one word called... "Try"? At least that's what the filmmakers did unlike most of you out there.

The book of genesis is exciting enough without adding stone giants, a lord of the rings-style mass battle, and a mad-max dystopian world. There are a few good scenes (mainly when the CGI animals are all arriving at the ark) but I mainly found this movie to be a grim, confusing mess. Some kudos to the director for not playing things safe, though in this case I don't think it worked out particularly well. Expand

Opening in a bleak landscape and adopting a preachy tone, the film takes a good hour to really get going. Darren Aronofsky, usually one of the best visual directors around, takes a fair while to bring his undoubted talent to the fore concentrating instead on character development and uninteresting family dialogue. Even the visual effects, including some rock monsters that look as if they have just stepped out of a Transformers movie, seem dislocated from everything else going on at this time. In fact, it's not until the tremendous battle for the ark that things start to improve. From here, it's onwards and upwards and the cast finally have some dialogue and drama to sink their teeth into. A crazed Russell Crowe starts to lose it; Jennifer Connelly steals the acting honours in just two scenes; Emma Watson cries a lot, but shows real promise here, and even Ray Winstone is rather good in a baddie role that he can play in his sleep.

Once aboard the ark Aronofsky finally delivers what one has come to expect from him and the visual effects also become more integrated into the story. The animals arrival at the ark is wonderful as is a backwards tracking shot of the vessel from end to end. Also, one sequence is surprising in its unpredictability. Ultimately you leave the cinema fairly satisfied even as you begin to question things like; if they are the only ones left how did they re-populate? Oh well, it's only a film.

There are many versions of 'Noah's Ark'Usually everyone knows what it's about after reading the title, but the thing is how much it will surprise us with newly initiated contents like visuals, story alteration, performance and finally 3D. There are many versions of 'Noah's Ark' story including animations. So I expected it wouldn't work as a full-length feature film, Especially in live-shot version. But got a good response by performing decently everywhere. A perfect way to say about the movie is it was an ancient version of the movie '2012'. No science involved, only fantasies. Remember the character Noah was not exactly a good guy either bad in this story. He was portrayed in such a dark and complicated personality who take the responsibility that was given to him by the creator.

After witnessing his father's murder, now Noah is a grown up lives with his wife and three children along with one adopted daughter. One night he dreams with the unclear visuals. The next day he visits his grandfather to know more what the dream is about. Then he comes to know the message and prepare to face it. In between, a war commence waged by a king to save humanity. Who wins, who loose and how it all happens comes later with a few brutal incidents.

I like this director's 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' than his other movies which were a massive hit. I expected this particular story could be more realistic manner, but I was wrong and it was a fairy-tale kind of approach made for grown ups. Why it suits only for adults? Because so many elements were too rude, especially inclusion of all the intense violences were not in favor of children to view. Other than that there's no nudity or sex scenes. All this is because of Noah was exhibited in such a strange shade. That end scene where Noah was drunk I can't even believe it. In the last half an hour Russell Crowe's role turns into what he did in 'Les Misérables' versus Emma Watson (Hermione, who was defenseless).

‘‘The rain has stopped
but the creator has not smiled.’’

This is the story that must inspire the viewers, though it won't do that. One thing it did right was it was completely a different. Awesome visuals and really I enjoyed watching it in digital 3D. The cast was not bad at all, as being in a main role Russell Crowe had large portion and others were just into it to show their presence. Overall, I feel it was taken as a challenge by the filmmaker, but a well done work, definitely not offensive, maybe slightly regarding religious perspective. Entertainment wise, it was a better movie, especially for a film adaptation. In my opinion, I believe it is okay to see at once.

It could have been a great movie by accurately portraying Noah and his relationship with God. The movie could have expanded on the story on Noah in much the same way while keeping these essentials truths 1. Noah loved God and clearly heard His voice. There was a relationship there. 2. God loves people and He wanted to preserve them as much as the animals through the flood.
I highly recommend reading the original story in Genesis chapters 6 to 8 (or 1 to 8 since the movie talks about creation too).

For non-Christians I recommend both seeing the movie and reading the original story in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Then read the book of John to put God's love for us into context.

For Christians, I suggest reading the 3-part article on Noah at Christianity Today magazine and then decide whether to see the movie. Search for the articles "Noah: Five Positive Facts about this Film", "Noah: Five Negative Features about this Film" and "Noah: Application for Christians and Hollywood". The Focus on Family PluggedIn review is wimpy and seems like it is trying to avoid offending anyone by holding back their opinions, perhaps to avoid discouraging Hollywood from making more movies on Bible events.

The movie does not closely follow the Bible's account step-by-step. See the press release from Paramount pictures for more details. "The film is a dramatization of the major scriptural themes and not a line-by-line retelling of the Bible story."

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be clear on this review: I did NOT read the bible story of Noah's ark recently when going into this film. I wasn't looking for a faithful adaptation or something to recapture my feelings on my first experience reading the bible: all I was looking for was a good film.

And, after the beginning and middle parts of the film went by, It didn't look like I would get it and I was ready to give this film a 4/10. While it may have had artistically stunning visuals, solid acting and a compelling story: my reasonable enjoyment of it was hampered by its shallow script, underdeveloped characters and their various plot points, weak villain and its occasional sluggish pacing. That was when I noticed a change in the third act, and my enjoyment was rekindled again. Aronofsky did a fantastic job at portraying Noah's complexity in the last third: where he was at constant battle with himself contemplating on what the right thing to do was, what he felt he had to do for his 'lord'. Some of the other characters gained an extra dimension to them too (Naameh and ila in particular). Perhaps the biggest factors in the last third that really appealed to me were its great messages, and genuine emotions shared between characters at the ending. That was enough to take my rating of this film up to 6/10. Still not a great film: but a surprisingly decent and occasionally epic film that I was glad I saw in the end; for the aspects that were worth it at least.

I can see why some people are creating a fuss about this movie because the director Darren Aronofsky makes it clear in every scene that this stuff obviously did not happen. Anyone who tries to argue that this movie was based on a true story would get laughed at, Aronofsky does not even attempt to hide the logical problems with the source material instead he puts a spotlight onto them and goes out of his way to remind people that the story he is telling is pure fantasy. Aronofsky is such a skilled director that I didn't think he would ever rely on such an unevenly paced story, disjointed and overly emotional characters, or plot devices that stretched the movie to an uncomfortable length, while failing to truly complete the yarn. That being said, much of the drama culminated in Watson's outtro, which was finally well executed... thereby making sense of the build up, yet not in a way that warranted the sloppy footwork of the preamble. Their sons are played by Douglas Booth as the eldest boy Shem, Logan Lerman themiddle son Ham and with Leo Carroll as the youngest Japheth and Emma Watson as the adopted daughter Ila.

The central story of the bible of Noah building an Ark, taking his family and two of every earthly creature, spending 40 days and nights at sea and starting a new world. (I have very little knowledge about how the world would be repopulated but I suppose that is for bible studiers to answer.) The story has been expanded---one of the bads of the film is the length of the movie--to include a super villain Tubal-cain, a descendant of the Abel killer, his brother Cain, played by Ray Winstone,--by the director Darren Aronofsky and he with co-writer Art Handel. I am almost sure there were no such characters as The Watchers, live rock formations, in the bible though I was told they were the equivalent of Nephilim, supposedly fallen angels. The Watchers are voiced by unrecognizable sounds of Frank Langella and Nick Nolte.

The watchers are the biggest waste of time--and they are a big part of the second half--but save the director and writers explaining how the Ark was built and how the creatures were gathered. The use of special effects is becoming an excuse not to explain things in movies and bringing a certain unreality to the screen.

The production values are first rate and even the musical score never overtakes the story.

“Noah” is neither a good or bad movie though it is good to see Russell Crowe handling a deep role with ease as he did in his early days but even with that though Moses will always be Charlton Heston, Crowe may not always be Noah.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was quite disappointing in the way it was hyped as this bold version of the telling of Noah. The story Darren tells is quite bold and it had a great dark tone to it. However, its message was thrown at you in a way that pissed me off. This idea that god would kill off the bad is a good thing, but to let the good suffer along with them is stupid. The loss of mental control of Noah wasn't something I was taught but maybe it was true. I'm right on the fence with this one; until I read the actually story (which is something I need to do). Maybe the story was true which would piss me off more than I'm already at. In the context of the bible of course. Stories of things that I believe were put there to tell the world what is wrong and right. Nothing to be interpreted as real life. So if this was the real story of Noah, then I've lost most my fate in the Bible all together. The story of how one man could get something wrong from god was good and the extent of his awakening was pretty satisfying. Though the decision of Noah to go to that extent where he thinks god is telling him he should kill kids is ridiculous and I wouldn't want a god like that. Though his revaluation at the end kind of made up for it. So at this point its more of a good movie than a bad, but I've got to read the story to see how much the movie is true to it. 7.6/10 Expand

It was intriguing in some standout scenes, and it was very beautifully shot, but I felt that it wasn't well put together and the editing was a bit "off". The movie was filled with little continuity errors, and overall screw-ups. It didn't have a great start, and then got gradually better, it then got to an incredibly well-shot action scene which definitely upped my review, but, it then got boring and predictable, it went on for far too long and didn't have the intrigue that Aronofsky's other films have clearly shown. I'm not well acquainted with the intricacies of the Bible story so I entered the cinema not really sure what to expect. I immediately, however, recognized that this rendition of the story would be embellished and changed, something I have absolutely no problem with.

I thought the first half of the movie was interesting and actually rather good. It was well shot and, as an origin story for humanity on this early version of earth, quite effective. I thought the depiction of the animals as less evolved versions of their modern counterparts was a nice touch. Taken out of context of the biblical scripture it had a good, mythical element to it's story which I appreciated. Sure there are a few inconsistencies here and there especially regarding the biology of repopulating the earth from one family (severe inbreeding... although it may explain a few things about the state of humanity now... Joke) but I was happy to overlook them as I just saw the story taking place in a parallel reality.

However, when Ray Winstone starts to get involved I thought it all went to **** In the second half of the movie Aronofsky throws his subtle camera work and interesting tale of legend out the window and replaces it with Hollywood drama and CGI bonanza. Granted, the effects look great but it was boring. Plus all the time on the Arc gave Emma Watson a chance to really show off her acting talent... of which she has none. Her constant crying or screaming in her remarkably quick childbirth were just awful.

So I'm giving it a 5. I wish Aronofsky had chosen to continue to deal with the story with the care and artistic integrity he used in the first half of the movie. It can not redeem what was simply just an awful, cliched final act.

"Noah" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: The cast was outstanding, especially Russell Crowe as Noah. The film goes through several stages of Noah's life and his personality changes throughout. Crowe was more than capable of making that seem realistic and believable. The film's base premise is a man balancing what he believes is right with what is best for humanity. That aspect was interesting and comes to a head late in the final act. Portions of the last 30 minutes are amazing. At it's core, it's also an interesting take on a tale that we all know by heart.

The Bad: It's too long and isn't quite interesting enough to fill the time. The first hour or so is difficult to get through and the last 10 minutes drag on way too long. Some aspects are sort of silly as the film blends historical fiction with sword and sorcery. It doesn't mesh well.

I just didnt enjoy the fact of such Bible rework. Second, actors are kinda overplaying, especially Conelly and Watson. I know Conelly is a great drama actress, and I like her, but this movie should be about Noah, God and The Sundering, not about Noahs wife nerves and arguing. I watch movies to enjoy the plot, decorations or actors play, but spitting tears and saliva at the face of Noah is quite disgusting. Scenes of pregnancy and birth accompanying by Watson screams is even more disgusting. This movie is dirty - this is the right word - dirty and dark. This is not a drama, not a disaster film, I dont know what is it. Aronofski is a great director, but I believe he failed this time. Expand

Even the animals & ark, 2 important "characters" in every story about Noah, don't stand out. They're just being used as a complementary objects. Why don't give them larger portion? Since VFX is no longer an obstacle for movie maker these days, this is a question should be asked to writing department.

Well, there are some decent ideas, yes. Like loyalty issue or the scientific visualization of 7 Days of Creation. But since they (the movie maker) are not brave enough to bring Noah out of conservative view, those ideas are left unexplored.

After all, Noah is not being made with the intention of raising a thoughtful debate about religion, but instead it will raise a debate about Darren Aronofsky quality as a film maker.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. $130 million? $130 million should have made the movie a lot better. Okay, I'll admit it, I liked the graphics. Giant world-covering tsunamis do actually look good. However combine that with a story many centuries old, and mix it with a madman who carries the name Noah, and throw in some random rock people, and this movie becomes plain disrespectful. Battle scenes? Rubbish. Lame tactics (they only charged and used infantry, no cavalry, siege engines, or arrows, javelins, shields, not even slings!), men with no swords, and this adds on to the level of disrespect this movie brings on. If you're Jewish or strongly Catholic, this will not make you happy at all. Expand

I'm not rating this movie from a Biblical standpoint because everyone should know by now that it isn't accurate at all. (fallen angels that look like rock versions of Optimus Prime, no wives for the other two sons, someone actually getting into the ark) This movie is being completely rated based completely on the production which is sorely lacking in an interesting story. First the good is that the leads do an excellent job of acting the story out and Ruselle Crowe hasn't looked this alive in a movie in about ten years. The scenery is also quite the spectacle and the special effects are almost Bay-like and definitely had a lot of money put into them. That money was spent in vain though. First this movie needed an actual script that didn't sound like it was written by a five year old. Some of the one liners in this movie are actually almost painful to listen too. The acting by a few of the minor characters is awful. The directing by Aronovsky almost seems like the man is truly confused. He almost doesn't even seem to know where this movie was going. The score is almost too ridiculous for its own good. Its constantly too epic and blasts practically throughout the entire movie even when a scene doesn't have any tension whatsoever. Ultimately the bad outweighs the good in this movie. Anybody into explosions and Transformers will be into this film but anyone who actually wants to see a good movie might as well steer clear of this one. Expand

This Darren Aronofsky's was technically well done. The CGI allows for great scenes and extraordinary sequences, such as the creation of the world or the flood itself, mixing the biblical text with scientific facts we know today. Cinematography is great, with alternating moments of light and shadow, serving the purpose of characterizing and giving personality to the two opposing factions (the sons of Cain and the sons of Seth). Clint Mansell's soundtrack is equally impressive, creates a good ambiance and gives intensity in the right moments. The actors also did a good job, particularly the antagonistic duet Russell Crowe / Ray Winstone. They're very related to each other because they're the mirror of each other, insofar as one is all that the other isn't. The remaining cast is more restrained, allowing them to have some deserved protagonism. Anthony Hopkins appears in a small role but to which he conferred dignity. "There are no small roles, there are little actors," isn't it? The worst of this movie? Two things: the first is to disappoint the expectations of the public. Whole movie seems a huge metaphor, as if the elements on scene were symbols meant to update the story and bring it closer to our reality. Taking the most striking example of this, the cities of the people of Cain are so savage and cruel that they seem to be dystopian metaphors of our great metropolis. If this was the director/writer's idea, then it's something quite original, but it shocked with all the expectations we might have, and, when that happens, it's so dangerous as a double-edged sword, as the audience can Not understand the intentions of the director. Even I was expecting something else, and even though I recognize the originality of the film, I still feel sorry for not being quite what I expected. The second problem of the film is those fallen angels invented by the director and surely influenced by the story of the angels revolt and their fall to the world. It was a bad idea for the director. Visionary director and passionate auteur Darren Aronofsky has always been fascinated withControversy is sure to ensue following the release of the Bible’s greatest and most epic story found in the Old Testament involving Noah and his arc. Visionary director and passionate auteur Darren Aronofsky has always been fascinated with the character of Noah, and the inner workings of a man tormented by the voice of God and conflicted by his own voice of reason. For the sake of skeptics, religious groups, and devout Catholics, I intend to avert my review very far away from any religious claims or criticism for the film Noah, and instead intend to only offer criticism on the film itself, regardless of its strong Biblical undercurrent. Visually, Noah floats adrift many previous films that share a similar look (The Road, Tree of Life, The New World) but unfortunately sinks in a preposterous commentary set amongst mythological creatures, accepting fate and the age-old argument of man versus God, man versus nature, and man versus himself.

Aronofsky’s Noah begins with the Bible’s first chapter of creation and the story of Adam and Eve. As temptation lures Eve to evil, along with Adam, spawn Cain, Abel, and Seth proceed their parents to a new life. Cain kills Abel, and what begins is the regression of man’s propensity for evil, death, and murder. Noah (Russell Crowe) is one of the last of Seth’s bloodline, and he along with his family, including his wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly) and his three sons, seem to be the only last remaining decent people during a time where descendants of Cain believe that natural survival instincts like killing and hunting are crucial to man’s survival in the world.

Aronofsky is a man fascinated with the inner workings of famously tormented individuals, and this project has been one of his greatest passion projects since beginning a career in film. Born to conservative Jewish parents, Aronofsky attempts not take any biased religious approach to his newest film, and instead focuses on the human element through an artistic lens. Insert ‘The Watchers’, mythological creatures/fallen angels who are imprisoned on Earth and betrayed by man, Noah, only momentarily floats as a forced visual studio epic that it never needed to be.

With The Wrestler, Black Swan and yes, even The Fountain, Aronofsky challenged the aesthetic of his narratives with the power of his lead performers. Mickey Rourke, Natalie Portman and Hugh Jackman are all prisoners to the shattered worlds they live in and must confront their demons and life itself to overcome adversity. With Noah, one of many vexed characters in the Bible, Aronofsky never challenges his fate by elevating the choices of a man to the fate predestined by a Creator. Instead, and unlike any of the other characters in Aronofsky’s films, Noah gives into accepting his fate of death, an unlikely characteristic for the director’s leads and the man depicted early in the film. Crowe, who is unable to tap into the mind of a man and be led into acting sanctity like Aronofsky’s previous actors, shows why he was the director’s third choice to play the character behind Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender. Crowe’s depiction of Noah is hardened much like ‘The Watcher’s’ outer rock form. Not to mention he delivers a sloppy performance of a man who is the only person who can hear the Creator’s voices in his head–often being eluded as a crazy person and not as the chosen one to hear The Creator’s celestial voice.

Like any other good Aronofsky character, Noah suffers from premonitions. He envisions the destruction of the world. With the help of his wise and all-knowing grandfather Methuselah (Sir Anthony Hopkins), Noah heeds to the Creators visions and builds an arc. Focused less on the creation of the arc itself, offering no type of montage to an arc that seemed to have lasted a least a decade to construct, Aronofsky directs his focus to man, the greatest evil the Creator has formulated–yet, it is a human being that puts together The Creator’s plan. Throughout, by adding a very strong artistic take to a story that is resonant in the minds of religious individuals, once the inclusion of imagination and artistry is injected into anything Biblical, doubt crashes the mind like waves on a reef. Much like oil and water, two fluids that don’t mix, art and religion are two very subjective and delicate areas to combine together. Just ask Mel Gibson, whose reimagining of the crucifixion of Christ, The Passion of Christ, will surely be met with a much larger commercial welcome than Noah.

After the uproar of its first trailer, Paramount Pictures conducted various private secret screenings of different versions of the film, including Aronofsky’s cut of the film, although he was signed to have the final cut of the movie out for distribution. Repulsed and deeply offended, Aronofsky got wind of the studios deception, and allowed the studio to reconsider and agree to release the film as the director had intended, with his cut intact.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Noah started promisingly enough by positioning the titular Biblical character as something of an environmentalist - a completely natural trait to show, as anyone who cares about animals must, by default, also care about their habitats and flora - who was at odds with what appeared to be something of a Man-created wasteland in the souring world around him.

However, from here the film drifted more than the ark atop the floodwaters, ultimately washing up at an underwhelming finale. As an atheist, I've no problem whatsoever with Aronofsky having added rock-angels (the Watchers) to central roles within the first half of Noah's story, as such fallen figures - in other elemental forms - actually do (rarely) pop up in (much, much) lesser-known niche corners of the broadly Christian faith, albeit not in Noah's story. So, it didn't bother me at all that, essentially, some cranky, spidery rock monsters helped Noah build the ark in this film, in preparation for The Flood. Fine.

The problem was that once The Flood gets under way, Crowe's sympathetic Noah switches from being a largely sympathetic and decent (if driven) character to someone who could just be seen as a near sociopath with borderline schizophrenic tendencies, by contemporary standards. After all, if God has decided that the world is to be destroyed, and that *everyone* else must die - as heard/known by Noah alone, of all men - well, that's good enough for Crowe's character, who helps God out by killing/murdering desperate people trying to get aboard the ark as the flood washes in - all the while as The Watchers jerkily play whack-a-mole with the throng trying to get past their perimeter around the ark. Stab, stab, stab. Squish, squish, squish. Splash, splash, splash. No, Noah, no!

Then, once the boat's afloat, Noah's character appears to go somewhat mad, driven by his absolute religious fervour and devotion to the will of God that he alone can tune into, as he prowls and stalks the ark. While that was potentially an interesting treatment - was Noah saving his family, or were they trapped aboard with a madman? - it just felt jarring, as Noah's brooding character became stranger and angrier, creating something of an antihero.

Some ill-advised casting also add a few rocks to the ride - Emma Watson is particularly all at sea; her boat-bound beau has little to do but stand around like a hirsute Hipster, looking cute but gormless; and Ray Winston's character has all the depth of a puddle - don't help, although Tony Hopkins has a cute and kindly cameo.

The terror and power of The Flood was never really to the fore; the wisdom of God's decision (if any) to have a do-over for Humanity never really shone through, and the somewhat turgid pace just saw the film plod along in the second half, like one of those deathly-dull religious films used as filler in the wee hours on smaller TV channels, albeit with brisk enough dialogue, while the score never hit any particular high notes.

It wasn't all dull fare, as Aronofsky added a number of almost stop-motion jump-cut sequences here and there, such as tracing The Creation - a sequence beautifully presented and designed with flickering artistry, and a suggestion that, of course, the Seven Days don't necessarily tally with Man's understanding of days and time. In this regard, Aronofsky pretty successfully - if briefly - tapped into a number of wider religious/spiritual themes that deserve following through, whether by him or another.

So. Conclusion. It was an interesting film that doesn't deserve the nonsensical bile and insults hurled at it from certain Christian fundamentalist quarters. However... it just wasn't a very good one, either, being a little too dull and earthly, for want of a better word. Angry Noah certainly wasn't someone who I'd choose to reboot a world with, put it that way, while a central conceit of the tale - Could *you* live with the guilt if *everybody* else in the world was killed - including every newborn baby and child - except for you and your small family? Could you accept that *you* did *nothing* to help drowning people all around you? - was never touched upon.

I'd be interested if Aronofsky were to take another story from the Bible, Koran or whatever for another film, but as it stands, the thought of having to sit through Noah again would leave me with a sinking feeling...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a movie that could have been good, but they made it drag on and on. Someone else said that it was a good movie chopped up and spread across a field of bore(my complete paraphrase), and they were spot on. I take off 3 points for the extra half hour they should of trimmed off. There were times I almost turned it off because it was so slow.

I take off 2 points for its overwhelming preachiness. This flows from the same error as the last point deduction. They get a point across, and instead of being done, they pound it into you until your eyeballs bleed. It makes the movie slow, and takes good dramatic moments and makes them slow and painful.

I take another 2 points for random stuff like him letting a girl get run over and killed, when picking her wouldn't have changed the fact that he couldn't out run the crowd, and the whole talk with his wife about how he would kill to protect his children and that makes him evil. but killing guys who killed a deer? Totally cool.

lastly It is completely off biblically, so when you watch it, just pretend you're watching a random fiction film. I don't take any points for that though, it just falls under the category of suspension of knowledge which most movies require.

ps. The movie also acts like animals are these little angels. Apparently they don't have animals in Hollywood, because if they did, they'd realize the evil people in Noah were acting like animals.

By far the worst and weaker film in Aronofsky career. It's still hard for me to see how he messed up so bad. Russell Crowe barely does enough while the rest of the cast is as useless as the script.

Trying to hide truth or spinning the fact? Or probably both? Typical holywood movies, deception everywhere. God never forgave those fallen angels, they are bound to be punished until now. They didnt even help Noah build the ark.

The CG animals were designed and animated in a very lackluster way. The animated CG intro was, for lack of a better word, a joke. Every character pretty much had the same expression on their faces the whole way through, which is appropriate in this case but it really bores the audience and dulls the character. I went because of the interesting reviews, but now I realized I probably haven't read them carefully enough. I am one of the many others who want my dough back. It's a shame, really: it had good potential. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, I have no idea what the Biblical version of this story actually is other than the pretty basic Noah has two of every animal on the ship thing. That being said there were so many problems with this movie. It is begging to have an MST3K episode actually. The part with the rock transformer things- really? That was so ridiculous. I was also very confused about how the "ark" was seemingly completely stationary (seemed a lot more like a large cargo container) but survived the flood. It was not as high as the mountains and those got covered with water so how did that ark not get covered with water. There was a filler section that showed Noah talking about man killing each other and it showed shadows of men with machine guns...Also, the end where it showed all the different animals and their babies should have had "copyright of the Discovery channel" because it really looked like stock footage. Some of it was even in standard definition. There was absolutely no emotional connection to the characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went with high hopes based on some early screening feedback, talk about disappointment! I expected a lot of story fill in and even some liberties on surrounding events, but most of this movie had absolutely no basis in the biblical account. Noah as presented and played by Crowe was no better than the people that were being destroyed! I am used to Hollywood presenting male characters as weak, flawed and stupid, but c'mon! Plus BORING! at least make it entertaining! Now on to the absolute lack of imagination in stealing from LOTR...The cross between Ents and Trolls that were inserted as a major story driver are not only found NOWHERE in the bible (I know they used the giant Nephilim that are mentioned, but really?}, but I fully expected as Sauron's army stormed the Ark for Gandalf to step out, plant his staff and yell 'You shall not pass!!!'. The amount of visual theft should have Jackson suing!

All in all a complete disappointment from the now ubiquitous eco-green theme, to the inserted evolution mantra(I am not a 'young earther'...but I also do not buy the evolution hypothesis that has NO support in the fossil record or cell biology), to the weak, psycho Noah, to the whole finding a mate (the bible clearly says that all 3 sons brought their spouses with them), to the Ark being built in less than 10 years by the rock monster from Galaxy Quest, to the stow away, to the snake skin talisman (what the hell?!?)...it was just all completely ridiculous and a turgid plod to an unfulfilling climax...ugggh, what a waste of money and time!

People were quick to judge the movie based on that fact it is biblical, but that should be put aside because it never mattered.
Story: Seemed like a story that was meant for environmentalists. A lot of it emphasized the importance of maintaining the Earth the way it was when it was originally created.
Acting: Emma Watson and Jennifer Connolly stole the show with their sorrowful performances. Russell Crowe and Logan Lerman gave an average performance, which was limited by the script.
Direction: The Watchers were a bad idea, they never felt like they belonged in that world. Almost like a poor man's Lord of the Rings. Their clunky animations made it look like a stop motion animation. Very poor choice on Darren Aronfsky's part.
Enjoyability - Regardless of whether the story of The Great Flood means anything to you. It wouldn't be a movie you'd pay for if you wanted to watch something enjoyable.

While we were expecting somewhat of a fantasy movie we had no idea that it would be so preposterous. We're not fans of the Hobbit-type movies and this was really in that genera. None the less, I (male) found the acting to be atrocious. Compare this movie to Beautiful Mind in which both these actors starred. It is a masterful work. We expected a fictional movie, not a science fiction movie.

Save your money, rent it if you must see it. The CGI effects are worthy of a large screen but the remainder can be viewed on anything. As it droned on we found ourselves hoping that each scene was the last so we could go. When the credits ran, so did we.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not worth a watch at all. I was watching this late at night and seriously considered just going to sleep on the couch. Also, I must mention that I am not a religious person at all, and I gave my score solely based on the weak aspects of the film.

First, half of the characters were dull or flawed. For example Noah was way too harsh and even stupid on his 'humanity will ruin the earth' speeches. Otherwise, the characters didn't ruin the movie too much, and I can even say that some of them played quite well at times.

The plot was laughable; There was way too much random, absurd, and boring times throughout the movie. Backstory was kind of nonsensical, and the beginning of the movie wasn't all that great, but it was acceptable, I'll give it that. The 'battle' felt short, started too early in the movie and was an obvious attempt to add unnecessary action, that was weakly executed on top of that. The second half was a huge drop from the poor action; it was boring beyond belief. The film deteriorates from saving the innocent animals and resisting an evil king to small scale family problems amongst the floating ark. In my opinion, there shouldn't have even been anything after they set sail (apart from the king getting on the ark, that was done alright). Overall, the cheap attempt at action and drama took its toll, creating strong negative feeling about the film, combined with some flawed characters and backstory.

The only redeeming factors are the cinematography, somewhat rare parts with good acting, kind of decent choreography in the scenes that had it, and the very, very little good plot choices that were made in the overall messed up plot.
