mother! is cinematic insanity and easily the most disgusting masterpiece I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Even if the film doesn't let you breath at times. 10/10.

People who don't like this movie are either offended by other interpretations of Christianity, don't like to think, or are global warming deniers and hate the environment. So, basically, a lot of people, but that doesn't meant they're justified.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. J Lawrence's character gives birth and her husband gives the baby to his cult followers, who kills it and then EATS it. The crystal on his shelf is his last victim's heart. At the end of the movie, JL uses the lighter she pushes behind the dresser to light the fuel in the furnace, which causes the house to explode in an inferno. I consider this the best possible favor I can do for you; the movie is so awful that it seriously has made me reconsider how strongly I actually feel about the first amendment. This movie is such painful torture it should be criminal. Expand

A couple lives out in the country with nothing much around. She is much younger than her husband (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem). They seem happy. He is a writer and she is busy renovating their huge, sprawling Victorian home. There are a few things that puzzle her, but for some reason, she seems to shrug them off. One day, a man knocks on their door. He is a fan of the writer and also a doctor (Ed Harris). Over his wife's objections, the husband invites the man in and then later invites him to stay. Without going into the details, things begin to go downhill from this one event. The director takes the idea of intrusions in a marriage and your life and takes them over the top and then way off the rails. This film is insane! After seeing it and not really having any sense of what was happening, I think I do now sort of understand what it was all about. While watching, you get caught up in the crazy and get carried away. Later, for me, it was easier to ruminate on what it all meant. Expand

Mother! (or, if texting, MOTHER, which abrogates the need for the exclamation...) is the pinnacle in the progression from Pi to Black Swan to the current tragic self-immolation. Indeed, Aronofsky has mastered his Cinema Surrealiste ofMother! (or, if texting, MOTHER, which abrogates the need for the exclamation...) is the pinnacle in the progression from Pi to Black Swan to the current tragic self-immolation. Indeed, Aronofsky has mastered his Cinema Surrealiste of depicting the subjective descent into nervous breakdown, be it from the wellspring of mathematical obsession; cutthroat competitivesness; or the desire we r all afflicted with: love. Here, Lawrence is the Mother, whose shrinking violet repression of social assertiveness builds up to a literally explosive performance. Bardem is the Father who deserves an exclamation for his performance as he once again erects a devilish artist/lover with his superb talent and volatile saucer eyes. Ed Harris is perhaps underutilized as he hacks through a solid performance, however Pfeiffer as his wife is in command of her menacing role that is both cynical and fun (indeed her character serves as a sort of Black Swan reflection to Lawrences perfect routine). And Kristen Wiig is a gem as the archetypal crass publicist who literally takes no prisoners. In the wake of all the other cameo performances on steroids, perhaps the only non-surreal scene has the real-life Gleeson Brothers fighting for family dominance (my $s on Domhnall, one of the finer young actors around....)

In short, Mother! is a claustrophobic whirlwind crescendo that will leave u ruminating on love, passion, obsession, possession and also how many house party guests to tolerate before the **** hits the fan...

HOT TAKES: Cmon, no Danzig on the soundtrack?!- this movie HAS to be the best fit for that anthem (utube it, millenials)
- I guess Lawrence is too young to remember the Rolling Stones "Mothers Little Helper", else she never would have flushed em- off her meds, her delusions propogate like Shutter Island in upstate NY
- Is it me or did this movie turn into Synedoche during the childbirth? - I havent been so confused by a frog in a movie since Magnolia
- O Christ...- i just found out thats what this movies about...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nobody will "Check the spoiler" box. This movie is a waste of time and there is literally nothing to this movie to understand or appreciate. I only stayed to the end to see if the montage of theatrics somehow had some meaningful message, climax or ANYTHING at the end. I was not just sadly disappointed, but the end was surprisingly worse than the beginning and middle. But there really wasn't a "beginning" or "middle". It was just **** thrown together on a screen. Shame on you metacritic for your lie of 7+ on this. You know this is utter trash. Expand

A screen adapation of the biblical story of Noah was the first bell that Aronofsky finally broke away from reality. If you expect from him a story like Black Swan or The Wrestler, it will shock you and make you think. Movie should not be missed!

The movie is the product of drug-fueled, idle egoism. We get it Donnie Darko. If this was his first movie: maybe. But that fact that this came out of an established individual means this is basically all he's got to give creatively. It's not just that the points he's trying to make aren't that interesting or impactful. Its couple with the fact that the movie just isn't filmed or edited all that well. There is no dynamic blocking and loads of sloppy post processing. The movie plays like a comic book and it is not a stylistic choice.

Jennifer Lawrence can't act.

I fall into the latter camp, and only went to see the movie out of morbid curiosity to see what all the fuss is about. All I can say is I wish I hadn't bothered. The word 'pretentious' has been used a lot and it's fitting. If there's any justice, Aronofsky shouldn't be let near a movie set again. Expand

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, this film isn’t worthy of the time it takes to write this review except that, by giving an honest summary of it, others will hopefully be dissuaded from going to see it and that I will consider my good deed for the week. It’s difficult to characterize this movie without using such adjectives as insane, unrealistic, absurd and mostly acts of exreme overkill and violence. Much like some modern art pieces, there are some misguided folks who may see allegories and analogies to life in this cinematic disaster but for this viewer, at least, I saw nothing more than ridiculous manifestations of bad writing and directing with supposed horror scenes so bad that, instead of being fear provoking, made them almost laughable. It would have been funnier had I not wasted an evening watching the movie instead of some bad television at home. I give this poorly executed effort by Mr. Aronofsky a one rating, and that goes solely to Ms. Lawrence’s efforts on the film’s behalf. Simply stated this is the “Mother” of bad movies” and deserves your firm boycott of this insult to the viewing audience. Expand

When the emperor parades before his subjectsThe emperors new clothes is a shart tale about two weavers who promised the Emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for the positions, stupid or incompetent. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new clothes no one dares to say that they don't see any suit of clothes on him for fear they will be seen as unfit for the position, stupid or incompetent finally a child cries out "but he isn't wearing anything at all!" The critics who say anything positive about this movie became the same kind of subjects as found in the emperors new clothes, apparently they were afraid to tell the truth for fear that they may look unfit as critics, stupid or incompetent to other critics. This movie is not deep, thought-provoking, or art; it's a man's personal vendetta against anyone who dares to have faith of any kind. His only goal it appears to be is to mock and belittle anyone who has faith, and it's sad to see how many in Hollywood are happy to jump on that bandwagon. Expand

So step right up and see the new Darren Aronofsky movie. It’s so weird and highly controversial, you can’t not see it. It’s Darren Aronofsky so go see Mother! Why not? Well I’ll tell you why not. I like weird and I’d like to think I can tolerate a bit of controversy but damn, even I have a limit. I don’t think I will ever be able to adequately describe how truly terrible Mother! is but I’ll give it my best shot.
It’s not that Mother! offended me, or shocked me. I’ve seen far more shocking scenes in movies (looking at you Martyrs) but Mother! has no plot, no narrative, no music, the cinematography doesn’t exist, and the cameraman forgot how to zoom out. There is no sign of any direction. Seriously if this didn’t have Aronofsky’s name on it I doubt it would have even got a cinema release. But wait there’s more, Jennifer Lawrence is giving the worst performance of her career. There’s no script. There is nothing good about Mother! So Darren Aronofsky if your sole goal was to get a reaction well then you’ve sure done it. But a movie so lazy and tiresome comes at a cost. I’ve lost all respect for you as a director and your name means nothing anymore. The only reason I didn’t walk out was the desperate hope that it will eventually get good. I wouldn’t want to walk out only to miss the point, the dramatic conclusion. I’ve watched this much I have to see it through right? Well as I’ve sat through all 121 minutes and without giving away spoilers (not that I could even if I wanted to) I can safely say this movie is not worth sitting through. So don’t go see Mother! It doesn’t deserve your time or your money. I’ve told you to skip Mother! but if you decide the curiosity will get the better of you then best of luck, just remember you can’t un-watch it! Ever! I don't often give zero ratings but Mother! definitely deserves it.

But first, a disclaimer: You need to have an exceptional knowledge of the Bible (or at least the broad strokes) in order to 'get' this film.

A stunning allegory on the nature of both the divine and humanity, the is an extended metaphor that is superbly crafted and deeply unsettling. Lawrence and Bardem are magnificent, and the intimate cinematography further enhances the unfolding horror at the centre of the plot. Dripping with symbolism and layered with intertextuality and subtext, this is a thoroughly difficult yet sublime experience. The trailer is both accurate and deeply misleading at the same time, and it is horrifying but this is not a horror film. 8.95/10

The low ratings are wrong. With that being said it is understandable to be confused by the movie. I was confused until the end and someone else told me. So stop reading and go see it if you haven’t. Watch the movie like a horror movie then be surprised. If you have seen it and want an answer to the question the movie is an allegory to Judeo-Christian beliefs. There is a horror in knowing that people believe in these stories. There is horror in the bleak ending whether it is meant to represent climate change, nukes, or a satanic hellfire type of apocalypse. There are of course many ways to interpret the biblical relationship to the movie with a Noah style flood, the body of christ, Adam, Eve, Kain, and Abel. But the layers of interpretation are what truly make the movie great even with its breaking of horror movie tropes like having more people making more anxiety unlike in most horror movies when being alone is meant to make you anxious. I am interested in seeing reviews from actual religious people because in some ways they would understand the connection better but perhaps are more likely to be offended. Expand

Unsettling events happen that keep the audience unnerved and worried for our main character. Just enough hints are put in to allow the audience to correctly guess the allegory that Aronofsky is going for. All this great craft gets lost though in the final 40 minutes or so in the movie. If the audience hadn't figured out what the movie is about yet, they are hit over the head with it over and over. This might be somewhat needed for Aronofsky to make his point, but it is very tiresome for the viewer and ultimately wasn't necessary beyond the first 15 minutes or so. This movie is worth seeing if you're a movie buff but I wouldn't recommend it for the average movie goer and I wouldn't say that this movie is a great film. It was interesting though.

Lastly, I don't understand why they copied Rosemary's Baby's movie poster. The two films have somewhat similar themes. Is Aronofsky paying homage to this film just like he paid homage to perfect blue by buying the right to the film and copying scenes, or is he doing something a little more shady?

A story about a couple and their house as well as about the universe, earth, mankind. It´s former title "Day 6" is telling a bit more what it is all about, I think. The idea is truly unique and hopefully this movie will make people talk and think and talk again... and then maybe think a bit more of what they can do for our future on earth. And while doing that they can enjoy absolutely magnificent performances by all actors, but mostly by Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer. Both of them were absolutely Oscar-worthy looking at what I´ve seen this year so far. Expand

Crazy-good! Arofonsky is such a visionary director. This movie will likely polarize the audience, but it's impossible not to recognize his amazing talent. Lawrence is incredible as well. Perfect combo.

If you are looking for something to enjoy, take yourself to see this movie. Sure it's not worth seeing because it's just all too predictable by the dawn of light before the scene even occurs, but at least you have something to see right? Oh, and please leave disappointments elsewhere because it would be a shame if you would ruin the fun as if it wasn't already ruined enough. Expand
