Once you get the idea of who "mother" and "him" are, it starts to feel very repetitive and heavy-handed. I can't say I really enjoyed any part of watching it.

The movie is the product of drug-fueled, idle egoism. We get it Donnie Darko. If this was his first movie: maybe. But that fact that this came out of an established individual means this is basically all he's got to give creatively. It's not just that the points he's trying to make aren't that interesting or impactful. Its couple with the fact that the movie just isn't filmed or edited all that well. There is no dynamic blocking and loads of sloppy post processing. The movie plays like a comic book and it is not a stylistic choice.

Jennifer Lawrence can't act.

I fall into the latter camp, and only went to see the movie out of morbid curiosity to see what all the fuss is about. All I can say is I wish I hadn't bothered. The word 'pretentious' has been used a lot and it's fitting. If there's any justice, Aronofsky shouldn't be let near a movie set again. Expand

Despite several fine performances (particularly Michelle Pfeiffer) and an inventive production design, these assets can't save this morass of religious cliche mixed with contemporary social commentary. I even liked parts of "Requiem for a Dream" and "Black Swan." It is sad when you compare the likes of "Mother!" to these other films.

The only thing shocking about "Mother!" is how bland it is. You know when you get a joke but you still don't find it funny? Well, I understood the message and allegory of "Mother!" but didn't find it interesting or thought provoking in any way at all. The film is so bad that it doesn't even deserve to be called pretentious because that would imply an ounce of ambition or vision on the directors part. It doesn't help that "Mother!" has the subtlety of a ten ton hammer and doesn't even add an original spin on its retelling of the bible.

Some movies are too smart for their audiences and don't deserve the hatred they receive. "Mother!" is not one of them. It is the art-house equivalent of a Transformers film. It deserves to be hated and it deserves to fail. Only gets a 2/10 because I generally like the director.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nobody will "Check the spoiler" box. This movie is a waste of time and there is literally nothing to this movie to understand or appreciate. I only stayed to the end to see if the montage of theatrics somehow had some meaningful message, climax or ANYTHING at the end. I was not just sadly disappointed, but the end was surprisingly worse than the beginning and middle. But there really wasn't a "beginning" or "middle". It was just **** thrown together on a screen. Shame on you metacritic for your lie of 7+ on this. You know this is utter trash. Expand

This film is an example of art made by a director whose world-view I generally agree with—I think the allegorical idea is fascinating—but the art he eventually produced has the effect of taking an allegory and pounding you over the head with it till you scream "Stop!" or "Please!" or "No!" which is, ironically, pretty much the dialogue Lawrence is saddled with. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, this film isn’t worthy of the time it takes to write this review except that, by giving an honest summary of it, others will hopefully be dissuaded from going to see it and that I will consider my good deed for the week. It’s difficult to characterize this movie without using such adjectives as insane, unrealistic, absurd and mostly acts of exreme overkill and violence. Much like some modern art pieces, there are some misguided folks who may see allegories and analogies to life in this cinematic disaster but for this viewer, at least, I saw nothing more than ridiculous manifestations of bad writing and directing with supposed horror scenes so bad that, instead of being fear provoking, made them almost laughable. It would have been funnier had I not wasted an evening watching the movie instead of some bad television at home. I give this poorly executed effort by Mr. Aronofsky a one rating, and that goes solely to Ms. Lawrence’s efforts on the film’s behalf. Simply stated this is the “Mother” of bad movies” and deserves your firm boycott of this insult to the viewing audience. Expand

So step right up and see the new Darren Aronofsky movie. It’s so weird and highly controversial, you can’t not see it. It’s Darren Aronofsky so go see Mother! Why not? Well I’ll tell you why not. I like weird and I’d like to think I can tolerate a bit of controversy but damn, even I have a limit. I don’t think I will ever be able to adequately describe how truly terrible Mother! is but I’ll give it my best shot.
It’s not that Mother! offended me, or shocked me. I’ve seen far more shocking scenes in movies (looking at you Martyrs) but Mother! has no plot, no narrative, no music, the cinematography doesn’t exist, and the cameraman forgot how to zoom out. There is no sign of any direction. Seriously if this didn’t have Aronofsky’s name on it I doubt it would have even got a cinema release. But wait there’s more, Jennifer Lawrence is giving the worst performance of her career. There’s no script. There is nothing good about Mother! So Darren Aronofsky if your sole goal was to get a reaction well then you’ve sure done it. But a movie so lazy and tiresome comes at a cost. I’ve lost all respect for you as a director and your name means nothing anymore. The only reason I didn’t walk out was the desperate hope that it will eventually get good. I wouldn’t want to walk out only to miss the point, the dramatic conclusion. I’ve watched this much I have to see it through right? Well as I’ve sat through all 121 minutes and without giving away spoilers (not that I could even if I wanted to) I can safely say this movie is not worth sitting through. So don’t go see Mother! It doesn’t deserve your time or your money. I’ve told you to skip Mother! but if you decide the curiosity will get the better of you then best of luck, just remember you can’t un-watch it! Ever! I don't often give zero ratings but Mother! definitely deserves it.

Everything is pageant-y. The FX are B-movie-ish....maybe C. The conflict grows & grows to ridiculous levels like a Seth Rogan penis joke bit that just won't end. This movie could've actually been done well, but it takes more than EVERY SINGLE SHOT MUST BE PICTURESQUE, ARTSY & PRETENTIOUS AS IT FOLLOWS JENNIFER LAWRENCE'S FACE THROUGH THE HOUSE, which is just distracting.........room to room to porch to room to room (repeat).

1 bit of hope : Kristen Wigg finally enters! (Wait, what? Yes, I know, I know..) Her 30 seconds of lines, total, were of course great. But that hope is lost as the movie only takes a further nosedive into, seriously (I think), Tarantino-grind-core ridiculous grotesque territory (see: From Dusk Till Dawn)

The movie's concept could've been cool....but this wasn't......like at all.

So, ok maybe they are trying to give multiple messages, some may say that it is good because it is not like other hollywood movies but at the end, no message is really given and at the end of the film it is just pure confusion.

Everything was progressing well for the first half. I remember thinking to myself, actually, this isn't so bad. Then the entire story descended into complete and utter madness. It became a non-sensical, chaotic mess. People around me were laughing, and I couldn't criticise them for it! It's a real shame because the cast as a whole is quite good, although Jennifer Lawrence has the same gormless expression throughout. I think Aronofsky tried to be a little too intellectual with this. It felt very self-indulgent and egotistical as a piece of work. It's definitely unnerving but also frustrating and confusing which doesn't make it an easy watch by any means. At the same time, it's overwrought with religious allegory and moral overtones. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except for sheer curiosity. If you're going to see it anyway, then I recommend waiting until you can do it at home so at least you can pause it, forward it or just stop when you've had enough. Very disappointing. Expand

If I wasn't so curious to see where this movie was going in the madness it presented over the length of film, then I would've left the theater early. I can only think of one movie that I wanted to leave the theater early more, and that was Eraserhead. If it wasn't for the sheer beauty of Jennifer Lawrence, I would give this movie a "0". I find it very hard to give anything a "0", so that is my excuse for this one. This is not a spoiler so much as a warning, the last 30 minutes of chaos is very hard to watch just to get to the ending. So beware of this if you are brave enough to see it because of all those positive reviews. If I can change one person's mind, then this review served it's purpose. Expand

Sure, it's provoking, and while it seems as if Aronofsky desperately wants to say something about love, religion and the strugle that comes with being an artist, all he succeeds in doing is making an allegory with nothing to say and no real story. The writing is so abysmal, that not a single line of dialogue felt genuine, even when delivered by great actors such as Javier Bardem and Ed Harris. At every chance the movie tries to shock you, but for me it never works since i can't relate to anything that's going on. With all that said, i would have been much more forgiving if the movie just looked great, but no. This movie looks terrible, with sloppy camera work, bad framing and truly disgusting CGI. I know Darren Aronofsky is a great director, he's made quality work in the past, and so has almost the whole cast, but this is one to skip. I guess it takes a truly great director to make a truly bad film. Expand

When the emperor parades before his subjectsThe emperors new clothes is a shart tale about two weavers who promised the Emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for the positions, stupid or incompetent. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new clothes no one dares to say that they don't see any suit of clothes on him for fear they will be seen as unfit for the position, stupid or incompetent finally a child cries out "but he isn't wearing anything at all!" The critics who say anything positive about this movie became the same kind of subjects as found in the emperors new clothes, apparently they were afraid to tell the truth for fear that they may look unfit as critics, stupid or incompetent to other critics. This movie is not deep, thought-provoking, or art; it's a man's personal vendetta against anyone who dares to have faith of any kind. His only goal it appears to be is to mock and belittle anyone who has faith, and it's sad to see how many in Hollywood are happy to jump on that bandwagon. Expand

The crystal on his shelf is his last victim's heart. At the end of the movie, JL uses the lighter she pushes behind the dresser to light the fuel in the furnace, which causes the house to explode in an inferno. I consider this the best possible favor I can do for you; the movie is so awful that it seriously has made me reconsider how strongly I actually feel about the first amendment. This movie is such painful torture it should be criminal. Expand

YES...This one SUCKS the Big One! Is HIM some Demigod that controls everything? Does he have one "Mother" after another? I guess if you drop acid and watch the movie, you would understand the plot, from the Screen Play Writer who dropped acid, and wrote the script. What was good about the movie...lots of strange action that messes with you're mind. Expand

i think the only reason you didn't let yourself feel the way i did when i watched this film, or let yourself criticize it for a second, was because its a major film made by a major director and your mind unconsciously telling you that you don't know better than him.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The problem with this movie is the trailer that Paramount puts out was selling it as a horror or thriller. The first 30 minutes built tension. After that you begin to get mad at the characters because you knew there was social commentary from 30 minutes to the second hour of the movie. The biblical themes are there with a man who is "God?" You have Ed Harris carrying around a picture of god with nowhere to go, but yet he invites his wife and kids over to the house. God accepts the family for who they are. The moment you see that you know someone is pushing their social commentary. What I thought was going to be horror/thriller was now an art house film with biblical theme. If the trailer even has a hint of biblical theme then I wouldn't of rented it. This is one of the films that gets so bad that even if you have alcohol in your system you will sober up quickly. Paramount was selling this as a horror / thriller so they can minimize their losses. If viewers knew this was an art house movie from the beginning then there would be less negative reviews. This movie could have been played by smaller names to save the studio some money. The acting from all the big names was very "canned ham". All the big names felt like they were themselves and not the biblical references who they were. By the time you reach the last 45 minutes of the film you are given visuals of all of God's worshippers. The good Christians and the people who put his name in vain, "ooooh". If you think you're going in for horror you will end up with Aranofsky's feelings on Christianity. Save your money horror fans there's a lot of other horror movies to watch and get a good buzz to. And it makes no effort to be a story. A woman moves into a house with her husband, a house soon invaded by strangers, bohemian partiers including a naked couple getting intimate, looters, a swat team, terrorists who start assassinating people, and soldiers (just before the house comes under mortar fire). The woman is not the protagonist because she's utterly passive, takes no action - or only makes the most timid efforts to take action to get the strangers out of her house. She acts like no real person ever would. The whole thing justifies itself as a metaphor or series of metaphors - mixed metaphors I'd say - and symbolism. But while a movie can have metaphors and symbolism, if it is to succeed it still fundamentally needs to be a story on a literal level. There is no story here. Just pretentious nonsense. Expand

Yes, it has shock value, and yes, it does have some moments of great, symbolic imagery, but ultimately this is a movie that does not have a plot, it wants to tell a story but does not care what the story is, it wants to cause shock, but does not try to do it by means of its ideas but by means of violence for violence's sake (and a big budget, and the heavy use of CGI). As such, this movie ultimately fails on all levels, except maybe trying to make a case about Aronofsky being a bold and imaginative person- which, in my opinion, is a question that should concern his friends and his agent, not the viewing public.
As far as I am concerned, there was no genius on display here. I saw pretentiousness, I saw lack of cohesion, and yes I saw some beautiful shots, which - however - relied mostly on CGI.
I consider this to be Aronofsky's weaker moment, a truly bad movie that does not know what it is and does not care to find out. Had this been an arthouse film with unknown actors and a 5k budget, I would recommend it for its bold style and genuinely scary moments, but primarily because this would be the movie of an unknown who is screaming for attention (look what imagery I created with the money I got by selling my car and an 8mm camera).
Aronofsky is not this position, however; nor are his star actors. As such, I think this movie is mostly the product of a narcissistic personality disorder and less of a work of art.
