i would not think it's very bad as the acting compensated for the craziness and the mess has a lot of meaning to contemplate on. i thought it's more coherent than Tenet....
many things were thrown in including the sacrifice of the son? very disturbing but definitely the message got thro.
so many things comes to mind, rosemary baby, green zone war scene, pan's labyrinth....
have an open mind... not so bad.... so glad michelle is back as witches of eastwick... remember?

Black Swan was similar, but more tolerable. I liked Noah a lot though, and I'm not a Christian. Honestly, I think the character of the artist is Darren Aronofsky. Either this man is psychologically amoral, or he is just plain immoral. What I mean by that is that it looks like this is a work of art "for the sake of art", which uses women to shock. Expand

Aronofsky really went too far to shock viewers... That being said, this isn't his worst, but at the same time not the best work. One thing is certain, it is very hard for me to recommend it to anyone.

Unsettling events happen that keep the audience unnerved and worried for our main character. Just enough hints are put in to allow the audience to correctly guess the allegory that Aronofsky is going for. All this great craft gets lost though in the final 40 minutes or so in the movie. If the audience hadn't figured out what the movie is about yet, they are hit over the head with it over and over. This might be somewhat needed for Aronofsky to make his point, but it is very tiresome for the viewer and ultimately wasn't necessary beyond the first 15 minutes or so. This movie is worth seeing if you're a movie buff but I wouldn't recommend it for the average movie goer and I wouldn't say that this movie is a great film. It was interesting though.

Lastly, I don't understand why they copied Rosemary's Baby's movie poster. The two films have somewhat similar themes. Is Aronofsky paying homage to this film just like he paid homage to perfect blue by buying the right to the film and copying scenes, or is he doing something a little more shady?

For me, the second hour, which includes the orgy of random violence and senseless destruction, destroyed most of the things I liked about the whole first half.

Acting: Jennifer Lawrence is good, except her character doesn't have much to do or even an arc. She spends nearly the entire movie looking confused or disapproving. Javier Bardem is perfect for the role and shines in it, with his booming voice and appearance. Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer are also amazing. Overall the casting and acting is great, and everyone fits their roles perfectly.

Characters: Again, Lawrence's character doesn't have much of an arc, intentionally, I assume, but still, and spends the entirety of the movie asking questions and sounding worried and confused. Plot: I loved the first half of this movie. I love the kind of movies that keep you guessing and trying to figure everything out. Get Out and even It Comes at Night are good examples of this, both of which I also loved. The first hour makes you so tense, scared even, and creeped out, but in a good way. Every creak of the house, every time she is in the basement, it instills fear, even if nothing happens. I appreciated the camera angles, moving along with Lawrence to give it from her perspective, which made the house seem bigger and made you scared every time she even turned a corner, not sure what's behind it at times. But this does get repetitive throughout the movie, as it is mainly just a shot following her, a shot in front of her, and so forth. I would have appreciated more wider and further away shots of her, creating the feeling that something or someone is watching her, giving off even more creepiness. This first half of the movie was well-done, paced well, and tense, creepy, and mysterious. However, the second half ruined most of it for me. I walked into the theater expecting it to be violent from the start, as some critics have coined the movie "torture porn," so when the first hour rolled by and there was none, I was confused. But soon after, I saw what they meant. It is pure chaos, senseless violence that was hard to watch, and not in a good way. It was completely unbelievable, and I know that was intentional, but it took away from the surreal-yet-somewhat-real feel of the first half. It went completely bonkers and crazy, and just felt like I was watching Aronofsky string random violence and things together to make some kind of allegory. Which brings me to another point, the imagery. This is the first Aronofsky film I have seen, and it doesn't make me think he's a genius. Some say this movie is a movie you won't forget, and I won't forget it any time soon, but in a really bad way. I will remember this movie because of the shock-value feel over actual story-telling in the second half. I will remember it because of the senseless and random violence that ruined a movie I was enjoying. I remember a good movie, like Get Out, because of how good the story-telling, script, characters, and plot was, and I remember It Comes at Night because of the twist it put on horror movies and psychological dramas. Mother! isn't innovative just because it was a Biblical allegory, which it seems it is, because it has been done before, multiple times. Also, the twist at the end was predictable within the last 30 minutes or so, and seems smart at first, but doesn't really make sense when you think about it. It raises questions, but not good, thought-provoking questions like It Comes at Night, but rather ones that question what just happened, because it makes no sense. The story is obviously not grounded in reality, but when the entire first half of the movie can be seen as somewhat realistic at times and the second half completely ditches it, I don't know what to think of the twist. Also, I feel Aronofsky did this multiple times throughout. There were scenes and things in the first half that looked cool at the time, but when looking back on it served no purpose and was seemingly there just to look cool. I don't have a huge problem with that as long as it has at least some significance or isn't used countless times throughout the movie.

Violence: Over-the-top for no reason, crazy, random, and doesn't make for a good movie. I think Aronofsky needs to see a therapist.

Overall, Mother! started off well with a well-executed first hour that invoked fear from the lack of knowledge of the story and where it could go, but ended on a bad note with senseless, random violence that ruined my enjoyment. Every fragment of the 4, more a 4.5 in my head, was purely from the first hour. Don't take your grandma to see this movie.

A couple lives out in the country with nothing much around. She is much younger than her husband (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem). They seem happy. He is a writer and she is busy renovating their huge, sprawling Victorian home. There are a few things that puzzle her, but for some reason, she seems to shrug them off. One day, a man knocks on their door. He is a fan of the writer and also a doctor (Ed Harris). Over his wife's objections, the husband invites the man in and then later invites him to stay. Without going into the details, things begin to go downhill from this one event. The director takes the idea of intrusions in a marriage and your life and takes them over the top and then way off the rails. This film is insane! After seeing it and not really having any sense of what was happening, I think I do now sort of understand what it was all about. While watching, you get caught up in the crazy and get carried away. Later, for me, it was easier to ruminate on what it all meant. Expand

I just sat there trying to figure out..what this was suppose to be a metaphor of or for. It just tried to have to many hidden messages in its context and the loose ends were unbelievable. Making this as a horror cartoon would have been better. I mean who leaves there front door open, welcomes in people who they do not know, and lets them talk rude to them? The premise started all wrong then descends into utter chaos trying to create illusions of with violent messages. Where did the cops come from or disappear to? This Picture reminds me of a slow acid trip..back in the day. t just does not work! Expand

Welp. There that was.

Now, let's get something clear here. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's how the filmic medium remains one of the most effective conduits for artistic expression out there. And Paramount Pictures - God love em' - sure is fighting the good fight in trusting director Darren Aronofsky to fire on all creative cylinders with "mother!," a living testament to the fact that the "auteur" is still the most important figure in the American studio system. Is "mother!" a provocative and engaging film? Yes. Is "mother!' an intriguing theological allegory for Man's relationship with the Fates and Nature? Yes. Is "mother!" a film that I'll truly never forget? Yes. But, was "mother!" a film that I enjoyed watching overall. Nah, man. Not really. And that fact, in and of itself, is another thing I've learned over the years from not only the filmic medium, but from all artistic realms entirely. It's all subjective, man.

And, with that fact in mind, I remain true to my opinion for that which it simply is - just an opinion. I found the movie interesting and appalling at the same time. Both thematically on the nose and frustratingly oblique. Ugly at times and pretty during others. Intelligent and laughably stupid. So with these conflicting extremities in mind, I suppose it all equalizes out to the first word I uttered when leaving the theater. "Meh."

But the last 30 minutes are so bizarre and disturbing that ultimately the film is unsatisfying. Apparently Aronofsky was creating some sort of allegory, but when you're watching a film and just taking it in, you're not thinking about allegories. In the end, terrific performances are wasted. All kinds of stuff happen for no apparent reason. It made me very uncomfortable. And then that twisted, mentally insane scene with the baby that gets killed and afterwords eaten, discusting. Jennifer, Javier and Ed were great in this movie, sad to see they went down with the twisted plot of the movie. Expand

However, I was left disappointed though but maybe that's because of my familiar taste in thriller's/horror's. But I am always keen to see something new. It was... different.. but it lacks a few things with plots and so on and so forth. It was frustrating and very hard to watch. Mixed emotions through out the movie, but damn do you go on a rollercoaster while watching it! i'm leaving it with a 4 because it was a decent watch but theres nothing incredibly good about it im afraid. Worth a watch or two, there wasn't enough foreshadowing in the film. They kind of dropped a few things here and there with no explanation and it's as though the audience is trying a bit to hard to put the pieces together and then your left with multiple questions and potential endings as was i. My final problem is the sick ending of the baby? who else doesn't get that? because whatever message that was, it was sick and twisted and could've been avoided. Expand

You don't get the purpose of the story till the very end except that it's a cycle which will go on forever.

I had no complaints about violence and some other uneasy scenes. I have seen worst violence than this one. The direction felt little bit weak. It was like direction asked them to do anything. The acting by the both leads were good but at some points you are unable to connect with them.

Movie could have been better with good direction, good execution and little bit better performance. Overall, it was a different experience watching it but I was hoping for more better of everything in this movie.

And it's really not a bad movie when you see it for the second time, now understanding its meaning. The thing is that, if you don't understand it right away, it will make you suffer. It will be a dreadful, chaotic experience that will make you furious.

When I saw it on theaters that's what I felt, then I googled it and after finally understanding, I saw it again and it was a very, VERY different experience. It's not for me to say what a movie can or can't be. All I can say is that I never want to see this kind of movie again. You either get it and have a wonderful time or doesn't get it and leaves angry and stressed. Getting it later won't help much, so you will only be satisfied after seeing it with your new knowledge. Getting this movie is not something obvious for many people, as it deals with a theme that it's only incorporated by some parts of society.

If you like this kind of win/lose risky experience, watch it. If not, don't. Even better: do it, but spoil yourself first. Not the ideal thing, but at least you won't risk feeling like my first time watching it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! Is a movie that depends on some other knowledge on external things that it's not really explained in the movie. I wouldn't call this exactly a mind bending movie, but more of a metaphorical movie, they extended a lot of metaphors to the whole creation and religious aspect of it is shown very well in all this, but the biggest flaw with this is that you can't really appreciate this throughout the movie, because it doesn't really blow your mind, just confuses you. The experience throughout the movie isn't very entertaining, just really crazy and boring, with a bit of stale acting and a bit of pace mix up in the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence was a great addition to this, no way it's her best performance but for her standards i think it was very solid and passionate.

The ending is great and explains everything you should know, and kinda makes you think about the movie in a whole new perspective, but that's the problem, you can just follow everything after the ending, so the experience during the movie isn't very favorable

Just looking at the direction he gave Black Swan and even this film you can tell. But he overshot here. When I watched Mother I couldn't look away, it was gripping, surreal and dreamlike, demented and glorious. But once the films climax happens it felt like id eaten a mouthful of sand. Theres no real substance to the film until you turn on your phone and look up the true meanings (NO SPOILERS). If they'd incorporated any of its true themes into the film I think this could have turned out a masterpiece. Actors played very well.
