A perfect combination of acting and action, but still very creepy! Jennifer Lawrence's performance was breath-taking, and also Javier was pretty good. The story is a little bit floppy, some parts missing, but very intriging!

"Pure egotism" and "Self-indulgent tripe." Using the reviews from the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns submits an art house film called "A Star is Burns" is the best way to describe this.

Definitely not a movie for the closed and lazy minded. Darry Aronofsky has proven without a doubt that he is capable of writing and directing a masterpiece, capturing a specific set of thematics in a unique and original way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a chaotic mess. It starts of very slow and starts to get very chaotic in a matter of seconds. All kinds of stuff happen for no apparent reason. It made me very uncomfortable. And then that twisted, mentally insane scene with the baby that gets killed and afterwords eaten, discusting. Jennifer, Javier and Ed were great in this movie, sad to see they went down with the twisted plot of the movie. Expand

And it's really not a bad movie when you see it for the second time, now understanding its meaning. The thing is that, if you don't understand it right away, it will make you suffer. It will be a dreadful, chaotic experience that will make you furious.

When I saw it on theaters that's what I felt, then I googled it and after finally understanding, I saw it again and it was a very, VERY different experience. It's not for me to say what a movie can or can't be. All I can say is that I never want to see this kind of movie again. You either get it and have a wonderful time or doesn't get it and leaves angry and stressed. Getting it later won't help much, so you will only be satisfied after seeing it with your new knowledge. Getting this movie is not something obvious for many people, as it deals with a theme that it's only incorporated by some parts of society.

If you like this kind of win/lose risky experience, watch it. If not, don't. Even better: do it, but spoil yourself first. Not the ideal thing, but at least you won't risk feeling like my first time watching it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most stressful experience I have watching a movie. But the message wasn't confusing at all, the story (the implicit one) was there, and u can get it without the necessity of seeing the film again (that's something pretty good). I really think it was gonna be a paradox at the end like Donnie Darko, but it ends up being just a cycle. I like the film, and it brings to life my worst nightmare involving people. Expand

I understand people with certain point of views will hate this, but for me this is outstanding. First of all, the technicality and all are perfect. I mean that third act must be really hard to shoot. Darren is really ambitious in this project and it pays off. All the actors are amazing as well especially Jennifer Lawrence. This is probably her best performance in a movie. I really wanted her to get an Oscar for this, but too bad the movie itself was already divisive and will not get any Oscar noms. Darren's directing to focus on the mother and Jen's incredible acting are really a great combination to show how the mother character was feeling and makes us sympathize with her. The third act is probably one of the best scenes in a movie this year. For me, it's kind of straightforward and too fast-paced for some sequence but still works so well in delivering the message. Aronofsky creates a stage-play box-film, with a few overarching themes, and lets it rip. This is about creationism and the bible, biology and evolution and art and its inherent function in a society ruled by both and neither simultaneously. Every scene grips, provokes and prods. Even when it is clearly manipulating it's working on some level. The eponymous Mother would be considered a thankless role for most actresses but Jennifer Lawrence isn't just any actress. She takes it and makes it her own. Without making a show of it she brings out the truth, she takes the audience with her, regardless of whether or not they want to - we just trust her. It's a brilliant performance that should not be overlooked for what helps make this artist's trip work. Expand

When I saw it, I had not heard the critiques or reviews and so went in knowing nothing. I think the movie is best if you don't know anything about it going in. It was marketed very differently than what it actual is. It is a film that should be taught in film classes because of the allusions to other works, such as the Bible. However, I disagree with the opinion that one needs to know a lot about the Bible to see the film. Another reason this is a great film is allows for multiple interpretations, as any great piece of art does. Anyone who says differently is limiting this piece of work and its potential. I interpret Javier Bardem to be the ID and Jennifer Lawrence to be the SuperEgo. Only through a compromise of both ID and SuperEgo as well as delving into the dark depths of our past (the boarded up room) are we able to birth meaningful art! Bravo to Aronofsky! Expand

Burns to comprehend the maternal, allegorical and perverse reality.

"Baby?", a powerful exclamation — which can be understood from any linguistic classification (denotative, interrogative, and affirmative) — made up of a pair of simple lexical items is the one with which superstar Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence opens and globalizes the leitmotif of an eccentric story that must be considered as a turbid orgy of shocks and varied properties camouflaged, metaphorically, by Darren Aronofsky, a filmmaker who spits out on our faces awkward truths without compassion, without consent, without prohibition. "mother!" is an outstanding diegeses on inexhaustible subjects that, anomalously, arrives with the stamp of a mega-American film studio; A motion picture that has more than enough justifications to become one of the most controversial, polarizing, ecstatic, avant-garde and imperative contemporary movie since "A Clockwork Orange" by Stanley Kubrick. Get ready, because Aronofsky has a lot to say. It's incredible what a man with anger towards the atrocious actions of his fellows can conjure up; in just one hundred and twenty hours, with the help of paper, pencil and a mind as prodigious and creative as richly perverse and engaging, without a doubt, no matter who gets hurt, Mr. Aronofsky, a native from Brooklyn, is one of the most — and limited — meticulous, fascinating, revolutionary and intense filmmakers in the Hollywood spectrum of today. Many of the unfavorable and counterproductive criticisms of "mother!" come from an uninterested and mediocre analysis, unjustified piques with the filmmaker or negative reaction to Paramount Pictures' elusive marketing, it's clear that it was not open enough— as they say —to roll the film out as it is, since although the studio still invests in the movie, promoted it into a disguise of frivolous thriller horror flick, An unimaginable surprise created in secret for a movie buff, however, for the most common spectator didn't work the experiment, for them it was as if they would sell a combination of "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick and "Pink Flamingos" by John Waters as a high-flying mixture between Mike Flanagan's "Hush" and "Devil's Due" by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with an added dose of morbidity, stupefaction and controversy. From a distance, "mother!" is a golden banquet in which food goes back and forth in a nonstop way, some plates seasoned with fresh polemic, ebullient narrative aggressiveness, ferocious screenwriting, intentional performing passion, dreamlike visual beauty and garnished with sour metaphors and sharp purports coming from the prodigious hands of our forward-looking chefs: Darren Aronofsky, Matthew Libatique, Andrew Weisblum, Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. Unfortunately, the most sumptuous feasts are considered as the black sheep either by its acerbic tastes, its rough appearances or a distorted word-of-mouth that oblige them to stay in the "underrated contemporary classics" area, each of them, still hot, are awaiting the arrival of a commensal with refined taste who finds that this exquisite plate isn't an insipid hotchpotch, it's, in addition to one of the few privileged to be able to boast of its ingredients and recipes, a breath of required fresh air to represent before our eyes the infamy that we throw to our home daily, originating top-notch performances, cinematography, photography, edition and direction on its way, rekindling the confidence in Hollywood, what a relief that there are still Aronofskies using cinema as a propagator of transformations, either in a naive or picaresque way, acrid or mellifluous, unsettling or reassuring; restorative ideas, thoughts and purposes. At this point, it's unlikely that a flick that panicked me and affected me equally, however, after two stunning showings, "mother!" is the glorious music-free work that has got it. I thank God that I'm not as those children who were traumatized by "IT" for life, I have the fortune to assert with conviction that my worst nightmare is not a clown wishing to devour me, a demon craving to possess me or some Freddy, Jason or Michael stalking to split me in two parts when I'm asleep, If someone suddenly asks me, I will shout to the four winds that I fear the most is to be captive — except in James Wan's terrifying/fascinating tales — in any of the parables of the American director, I fear to be a paranoid mathematician, a monomaniac fighter, an out-of-control fragile and repressed ballerina or a father attesting to the murder of his newborn son, we fear, with all our hearts, to be within "mother!" realistic utopia, simply, terrifies us.

Flammable, crackling, burning, resurrection, everything cyclical, everything critical.

Maestro Aronofsky praised the work of ordinary people with a difficult fate, by showing the horror, without removing the horror. Here things are a little different. In "Requiem" Darren spoke on the topic of human dependence and weakness, which gradually kill them, "Black Swan" is about the fears and insecurities, dreams and horrors of human life, but "mother!" on the other.

It all starts quietly as always, there's a little family (Lawrence and Bardem), who lives in a huge house. He had long ago working on a new poem, She — settles house, which it restored after the fire that happened at her husband before they met. She works days, working on wall color, arrangement of furniture and other furnishing the home, not forgetting the husband, giving him all the affection and care which she has, but virtually unanswered. And all was well until on the threshold appeared a mysterious elderly physician, bringing with it a series of events, so phantasmagoric, shocking, how can the imagination of Aronofsky. And it allows you very, very much. Essentially the entire plot — from a quiet and relaxing start to an incredible and frightening finale — this is all one big parallel with the plot of the old Testament, the first part of the gospel. Nothing more about the plot I will not say, because then everyone will see his. I can only say that what I saw amazed me.

In the end we have another masterpiece and a living classic Aronofsky, impregnated with his personal unique style and worthy of his previous works. For me "mother!" — best film in 2017 at the time of writing the review. Bravo!

If you are expecting a horror with spooks and scares then this is not the right movie for you. This movie focuses on the symbolic meaning of religion, the nurturing of planet Earth, and how we as human beings coexist with nature. This movie is about the reflections of human creation, destruction, and the continuity of life. To give a brief summary of the characters and the plot of this film, we are given two main characters in this story, Mother and Him. Mother, obviously being a representation of mother Earth, is played by Jennifer Lawrence who gives an amazing performance. Her character focuses on the issue of trust. While everything she has done in her life has been about creating and prolonging life, she is the authority and the core player in this movie. Him, on the other hand, is a representation of God himself. He is worshipped by those below him and he is the influence of other people’s lives. Everyone will follow him and even go to certain extents to show their worthiness to him as a deity. As God, he wants to provide and care to everyone but finds no issue that there is ever a problem. While mother and Him play a significant role in the movie, this movie is a story of how actions have consequences and how purity can be corrupted. This movie is full of symbolic meaning and is a deep story of how we should not take advantage of what we have now. I give this movie a 4 out of 5. Expand

"Baby?"

After giving it some thought, my mind has changed completely and how I admire the movie even more.

"mother!" is f**king nuts that by the end of it I was left speechless. What starts off as a slow burn thriller with sprinkle of mystery, turns into chaos of cruel humanity. Leaving a dark impression that left me shaking in shock which never happened before. Almost like I just witness murder.

The whole thing is one giant metaphor and is very clear of what it's trying to be. Despite the story being straight forward when you fully get a gasp of it, never did it come across pretentious, putting aside what people have said. The way it was told was so unique.

Darren Aronofsky brought what I call a 'disturbed honesty'. Something holy and yet so unholy. Dark and deep in the roots of humanity. Nothing this guy does feel like shock value, just a depressing portray of art.

I don't want to say anymore due to keeping things under wraps for people who know little about the film. The performances all around are fantastic and it's something that's gonna say with me for a long time.

To be honest, I've started to love the film even more as time to go on. Not for everyone, but with each thought, the more brilliant it becomes.

Everything was progressing well for the first half. I remember thinking to myself, actually, this isn't so bad. Then the entire story descended into complete and utter madness. It became a non-sensical, chaotic mess. People around me were laughing, and I couldn't criticise them for it! It's a real shame because the cast as a whole is quite good, although Jennifer Lawrence has the same gormless expression throughout. I think Aronofsky tried to be a little too intellectual with this. It felt very self-indulgent and egotistical as a piece of work. It's definitely unnerving but also frustrating and confusing which doesn't make it an easy watch by any means. At the same time, it's overwrought with religious allegory and moral overtones. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except for sheer curiosity. If you're going to see it anyway, then I recommend waiting until you can do it at home so at least you can pause it, forward it or just stop when you've had enough. Very disappointing. Expand

Is it a film worth a rewatch or greater analysis? Probably not. The problem with the film is that once you attached significant bilbical motifs to it, the film especially in the final act falls flat and becomes nothing less than a metaphorical smorgasbord that doesn't necessarily tell you much except that Darren doesn't seem to like religion that awful not. That said, the first 2/3 thirds of the film work really well as this unsettling thriller with almost dream logic of a Lynchian film. I enjoyed these parts because as slow as it is, with a lack of much going on, the sense of uneasiness and mystery was an amazing mood. The general direction by Affronsky is second to none and is actually quite interesting to watch. The acting is top notch with Lawrence and Barden delivering well time performances.

That said, the film kind of falls apart in the final third with an explosive finale that mirrors something of a dystopian nightmare and that I think is the thesis of the film which kind of negates all the beautiful setting of the beginning. That said its still a good film if you want to just watch something original, however, the metaphorical analogies are very on the nose and not worth further examination.

Sure, it's provoking, and while it seems as if Aronofsky desperately wants to say something about love, religion and the strugle that comes with being an artist, all he succeeds in doing is making an allegory with nothing to say and no real story. The writing is so abysmal, that not a single line of dialogue felt genuine, even when delivered by great actors such as Javier Bardem and Ed Harris. At every chance the movie tries to shock you, but for me it never works since i can't relate to anything that's going on. With all that said, i would have been much more forgiving if the movie just looked great, but no. This movie looks terrible, with sloppy camera work, bad framing and truly disgusting CGI. I know Darren Aronofsky is a great director, he's made quality work in the past, and so has almost the whole cast, but this is one to skip. I guess it takes a truly great director to make a truly bad film. Expand

To understand an allegory you may need a clue or several and depending on what you expect and what you may comprehend, that is perhaps the best way to enjoy this movie.

Mother! is a film that let's say it treats passively their viewers at first, because in one way or another you do not know what you're watching, but it's okay, that feeling of restlessness is precisely what the film aims to, because very soon, you and Mother - Jennifer Lawrence's character - will understand that you have no control whatsoever over what is about to happen

What follows is a disconcerting journey, full of discomfort and distrust, a journey that offers no answers but symbolism, yet of course, everything will make sense only if you are paying attention.
Is it worth the trouble? maybe not for everybody and I must emphasize that there is nothing wrong with that, many times I have met people who are upset when they should analyze a movie because they feel that the story and the director are treating them like idiots, but this is a provocative film, is not as shocking as some were saying, but the setting, the tone, the cinematography, all those things are focused on a frenetic and heavy pace that tries to overwhelm you from all sides.
The last half hour of the film is a frenzy of social criticism wrapped in religious tones and elements of horror, the idea is that you feel suffocated and undoubtedly the film succeeds at it.

Darren Aronofsky washes away his huge failure with Noah and returns to his roots of provocation, still unable to overcome his past, but undoubtedly, Mother! returns some status to his name.

Jennifer Lawrence manages to sustain the film with its protagonism and she delivers a good performance, although far from being memorable.
Javier Bardem is a solid cast partner, managing to print everything that the character requires and always attentive at each point.

Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer have a short but very relevant participation because it is they who reveal what is happening when you discover who they are, who their children are and why Bardem's character is so relevant to them.

In the end Mother! is an interesting message, no doubt each person will have their own interpretation even though it is understood that the message is about the uselessness of God and his failure to control his own creation, therefore his omnipotence is a failure. We see the damage made by man to mother earth and no matter how much we hate to see it that way, we are a disease for this world and the world is hitting us back as we are seeing it today. I believe in nature not in God, after all what it means to be God if all your wickedness is forgiven no matter how serious your crime is? and the crime committed here is the merciless attack on Mother.

Without a doubt you'll talk about it, regardless of whether you like it or not. Give it a chance.

Expand

The movie is incredibly well acted by Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence and they have great chemistry. The movie is pretty much a metaphor of the bible from every single scene to every single character. The amount of detail Aronofsky put into this movie is astounding and he should be applauded for it. I can also see people not really understanding the movie and not liking it, but as for me I did and I think people should give it a watch and let yourself decide. For me, the second hour, which includes the orgy of random violence and senseless destruction, destroyed most of the things I liked about the whole first half.

Acting: Jennifer Lawrence is good, except her character doesn't have much to do or even an arc. She spends nearly the entire movie looking confused or disapproving. Javier Bardem is perfect for the role and shines in it, with his booming voice and appearance. Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer are also amazing. Overall the casting and acting is great, and everyone fits their roles perfectly.

Characters: Again, Lawrence's character doesn't have much of an arc, intentionally, I assume, but still, and spends the entirety of the movie asking questions and sounding worried and confused. Plot: I loved the first half of this movie. I love the kind of movies that keep you guessing and trying to figure everything out. Get Out and even It Comes at Night are good examples of this, both of which I also loved. The first hour makes you so tense, scared even, and creeped out, but in a good way. Every creak of the house, every time she is in the basement, it instills fear, even if nothing happens. I appreciated the camera angles, moving along with Lawrence to give it from her perspective, which made the house seem bigger and made you scared every time she even turned a corner, not sure what's behind it at times. But this does get repetitive throughout the movie, as it is mainly just a shot following her, a shot in front of her, and so forth. I would have appreciated more wider and further away shots of her, creating the feeling that something or someone is watching her, giving off even more creepiness. This first half of the movie was well-done, paced well, and tense, creepy, and mysterious. However, the second half ruined most of it for me. I walked into the theater expecting it to be violent from the start, as some critics have coined the movie "torture porn," so when the first hour rolled by and there was none, I was confused. But soon after, I saw what they meant. It is pure chaos, senseless violence that was hard to watch, and not in a good way. It was completely unbelievable, and I know that was intentional, but it took away from the surreal-yet-somewhat-real feel of the first half. It went completely bonkers and crazy, and just felt like I was watching Aronofsky string random violence and things together to make some kind of allegory. Which brings me to another point, the imagery. This is the first Aronofsky film I have seen, and it doesn't make me think he's a genius. Some say this movie is a movie you won't forget, and I won't forget it any time soon, but in a really bad way. I will remember this movie because of the shock-value feel over actual story-telling in the second half. I will remember it because of the senseless and random violence that ruined a movie I was enjoying. I remember a good movie, like Get Out, because of how good the story-telling, script, characters, and plot was, and I remember It Comes at Night because of the twist it put on horror movies and psychological dramas. Mother! isn't innovative just because it was a Biblical allegory, which it seems it is, because it has been done before, multiple times. Also, the twist at the end was predictable within the last 30 minutes or so, and seems smart at first, but doesn't really make sense when you think about it. It raises questions, but not good, thought-provoking questions like It Comes at Night, but rather ones that question what just happened, because it makes no sense. The story is obviously not grounded in reality, but when the entire first half of the movie can be seen as somewhat realistic at times and the second half completely ditches it, I don't know what to think of the twist. Also, I feel Aronofsky did this multiple times throughout. There were scenes and things in the first half that looked cool at the time, but when looking back on it served no purpose and was seemingly there just to look cool. I don't have a huge problem with that as long as it has at least some significance or isn't used countless times throughout the movie.

Violence: Over-the-top for no reason, crazy, random, and doesn't make for a good movie. I think Aronofsky needs to see a therapist.

Overall, Mother! started off well with a well-executed first hour that invoked fear from the lack of knowledge of the story and where it could go, but ended on a bad note with senseless, random violence that ruined my enjoyment. Every fragment of the 4, more a 4.5 in my head, was purely from the first hour. Don't take your grandma to see this movie.

I was expecting something disturbing to enter the theater, but the surprise was something eminent. This is a subjective, metaphorical and extremely critical work. Many will come out angry, confused or astonished, as was my case. Lawrence who beholds us with his beauty most of the time, shows us a stifling reality not only in a disturbing drama, how the film is treated, but rather the very dilemma of being a woman. You get lost, distressed, trying to catch any loophole throughout the movie, to try to understand which way this work is going. When the spectator finally understands what this narrative is about, the will is to applaud standing. Religion, environmentalism, feminism and even politics, for "Mother" all these subjects can be contemplated. What is most incredible is that the more explicit the theme, related to religion and nature, the feminist and political critique is there, has room for all this in a sea of subjectivity and poetry. A true work of art. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you don't believe in climate change, you'll hate this movie. If you're extremely religious (Christian/Catholic), you'll hate this movie. Otherwise, it's an extremely interesting commentary on religion and our world today. First, you have to understand that the movie is an allegory - essentially a metaphor using biblical references. Jennifer Lawrence's character is Mother Earth. Javier Bardem's character is God. Michelle Pfieffer & Ed Harris are Adam & Eve. All the people at the "party" at the end of the movie represent mankind. It's a story about how Mother Earth gave this beautiful "home" (Earth) to God and he ruined it with mankind. He invited all these people in who didn't appreciate Mother Earth, Earth itself, and all the hard work she put into making it beautiful. She is extremely disrespected by God's "guests" and then mankind ruins the Earth, so essentially climate change. And then the Earth dies and Mother Earth is just done with God and him being so selfish so she destroys Earth, but he never learns from his mistakes and keeps doing the same thing over and over. I went into the movie understanding it was an allegory for climate change & how terrible mankind is to our Earth, but that's it. I have a very basic understanding of the story of the bible and Adam & Eve and all that stuff. From there I understood where it went. I think if you truly get the allegory, you'll like the movie. Yes, it gets outrageous and hyperbolic at times, but that's to show how terrible mankind is to each other, our home, and our Mother (Earth). I think it was a great film and extremely thrilling. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I really enjoyed the commentary on our society today. Any movie that has societal undertones (and political since apparently climate change is political) is going to ruffle some feathers. I will admit the dead baby part was weird. And Kristen Wiig killing people still confuses me. But I think it worked well, and quite honestly scared the **** out of me when thinking about our earth and our existence. Expand

Overall, the film is an allegory knitted as a dream fever of compressed time, space, and mood. Sure, on the surface it is easy to place the movie into a horror head-trip film, but if one is able to look past all of cataclysm, one will see that Darren Aronofsky meant to make a movie of many layers. The allegory of “mother!” demonstrates that a movie can mean a whole lot without what it means meaning anything. As Aronofsky wrote, “It is a mad time to be alive,”. Adding issues like overpopulation, species extinction, the “schizophrenic” U.S. climate-change policy, ancient tribal disputes, the killing of baby dolphins, politics as sports, and our daily state of denial about all of the above. “From this primordial soup of angst and helplessness,” he wrote, “I woke up one morning and this movie poured out of me like a fever dream.” Expand

An ecofeminist parable of incivility, violation, narcissism, sacrilege, greed, devastation, carnage and ruin. A unique and thorny masterpiece, that defies categorisation, and should wear its ‘F’ Cinemascore like a badge of honour. A year from now more people will like the movie than do today. In ten years there’ll be people denying they ever didn’t like it.

Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence gives a performance for the ages.

I say "art" because anyone that gives this a positive review sees it as such. While my favorite food is pizza, there is plenty of bad pizza in the world. This "art" is one of the worst of it's kind. If I wasn't so curious to see where this movie was going in the madness it presented over the length of film, then I would've left the theater early. I can only think of one movie that I wanted to leave the theater early more, and that was Eraserhead. If it wasn't for the sheer beauty of Jennifer Lawrence, I would give this movie a "0". I find it very hard to give anything a "0", so that is my excuse for this one. This is not a spoiler so much as a warning, the last 30 minutes of chaos is very hard to watch just to get to the ending. So beware of this if you are brave enough to see it because of all those positive reviews. If I can change one person's mind, then this review served it's purpose. Expand

Is mother a symbol of something greater? There will be many interpretations of this film's allegorical intent, but it does feature Lawrence in almost every shot. She lives in a secluded country home with her troubled poet/husband (Javier Bardem), but unexpected visitors are only the first twist in this increasingly bizarre and disconcerting trip (and I mean that in the LSD sense). Although I'm sure director Darren Aronofsky meant the occurrences to become increasingly unsettling, after a while the absurdity of the situations became laughable (to me, at least). Despite the elusiveness of a clear meaning, it's an unusual and intriguing cinematic experience. Expand

YES...This one SUCKS the Big One! Is HIM some Demigod that controls everything? Does he have one "Mother" after another? I guess if you drop acid and watch the movie, you would understand the plot, from the Screen Play Writer who dropped acid, and wrote the script. What was good about the movie...lots of strange action that messes with you're mind. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! is a film that has been subject to a lot of criticism. Films that are a big metaphor or carry over an allegory are always subject to polarizing reviews. I believe this to be in part by many lazy people passing off half witted ideas as "art", which in turn leads to true art being dumped on. Mother! is not a film for everyone, it really isn't. You will either love the film, or leave confused and resentful towards it. This film is a metaphor for the bible, and the destruction of Mother Earth. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Earth, her husband is God, Harris is Adam and Pfeiffer is Eve, while their children are Cain and Abel. The glass piece Bardem holds in his office is symbolic of the "forbidden fruit", which 'Eve' ultimately is tempted by. More people flock at the home until a partygoer destroys a sink causing a leakage, indicated the flood that wiped out civilization. But after 'God' writes his new work, symbolic of the New Testament, more people retreat to the home. After a very disturbing and gruesome ending, the home is destroyed, just to be rebuilt again, showing the never ending cycle of the destruction of Earth. The ending is a doozy and as someone who enjoys horror, blood and guts - this will leave you emotionally shaken. I was borderline in tears by how utterly shocking it is. This is mainly a story about how we take and take from Earth, using up all its resources and hardly, or in some cases never, giving back to it. This film does a spectacular job of displaying not only the story of the Bible, but how we as a society are selfish, destructive and undeserving at times. This truly is a work of art and some people will never see it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! is a disturbingly brilliant film by Darren Aronofsky with terrific performances by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. The religious/mother nature allegory within the film was completely unexpected but welcomed with its beautiful execution. In a way, Mother! reminds me of the creepy, unsettling nature of Kubrick's 'The Shining', focusing on the characters and the environment in which they live as a means of building tension and suspense... Definitely one of the most intense movies I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. Expand

It focuses on the quiet abuse of marginalization faced by women in domestic roles, but this narrative has other parallels, which, given the surreal nature open a wealth of personal interpretation. This isn't because the film is pretentious or unclear, but because its story speaks to a basic human truth that manifests in more ways than one. This is not a popcorn horror flick. It's an upsetting, challenging movie, with shades of David Lynch's work. If you're looking to be spooked, go see IT (also a good film). This movie will horrify you (I caught myself yelling at the screen in the theater), but not in the fun scary sort of way many audiences are expecting. Welp. There that was.

Now, let's get something clear here. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's how the filmic medium remains one of the most effective conduits for artistic expression out there. And Paramount Pictures - God love em' - sure is fighting the good fight in trusting director Darren Aronofsky to fire on all creative cylinders with "mother!," a living testament to the fact that the "auteur" is still the most important figure in the American studio system. Is "mother!" a provocative and engaging film? Yes. Is "mother!' an intriguing theological allegory for Man's relationship with the Fates and Nature? Yes. Is "mother!" a film that I'll truly never forget? Yes. But, was "mother!" a film that I enjoyed watching overall. Nah, man. Not really. And that fact, in and of itself, is another thing I've learned over the years from not only the filmic medium, but from all artistic realms entirely. It's all subjective, man.

And, with that fact in mind, I remain true to my opinion for that which it simply is - just an opinion. I found the movie interesting and appalling at the same time. Both thematically on the nose and frustratingly oblique. Ugly at times and pretty during others. Intelligent and laughably stupid. So with these conflicting extremities in mind, I suppose it all equalizes out to the first word I uttered when leaving the theater. "Meh."

It is divisive due to the extremities Aronofsky takes the story to. It is an experience certainly not for the faint of heart, but I'd recommend anyone curious see it to make their own mind up. What can be critiqued objectively though is;

The cinematography is outstanding. Matthew Libatique does an excellent job creating a beautiful, thriving environment that slowly evolves through the course of the film. Consistently impressive camera set pieces, with a lot of choreography involved. Bardem and Lawrence put in an incredible performance. Everything you'd expect from the Oscar winning duo, as well as the rest of the star studded cast constantly make their way in and out of the film in rapid set pieces. Coll Anderson and Steve Baine did a brilliant job adding an important layer of intensity through impressive sound design. Much of the credit should be given to sound for providing the lucid nature of the environment in the house. All the visual effects from Protozoa were top notch as usual (see Black Swan and The Fountain), never really taking the FX to the extreme, always leaning on an aspect of magical realism. And of course, much credit has to be given to the incredible casting and stunt team for what must have been weeks and weeks of intimate and crowd choreography. Just as a production, it was really impressive to behold. So love the story, or hate it, but its fair to argue that its a very well made produced film that you certainly won't get bored watching. And an experience worth seeing at the theatre, if not at last to satisfy your own curiosity, but to also support truly original content being produced at a Hollywood level.

There are some truly vile images, extremely disturbing scenes, a very convoluted plot that weaves both a Biblical allegory with the history of time. This film is very hard to watch and very challenging. It is definitely not for everyone. The film is replete with philosophy, theology with a smattering of Quantum physics. But a movie like that is not going to be entertaining, though there are some odd and humorous moments in the film. This is not a fun journey, but it is intellectually stimulating. One theory of time, from Hawking, is that the Universe constantly expands up to the point when it is at its apex, then collapses back into a particle of infinite mass and density, which in turn leads to the Big Bang and the expansion starts all over again. Take that theory and combine it with the Bible (and numerous biblical references) and current times that seem like we may be close to the apocalypse and there you have this film. Not for everyone. Really. Expand

What this movie is about is another matter. To me it was about art, on the one hand, and fame on the other (I thought about the Beatles and even Princess Diana, although she was more a personality that attracted people than an artist). The artist needs to create, and is flattered when he finds individuals who love his creations. His family can easily rank second to the adulation he gets. Unfortunately, especially when an artist is very popular and/or famous, worship can get out of hand because people are attracted to an artist’s work for all sorts of reasons that may or may not have to do with what the artist himself thinks he is saying. Dark undercurrents can be released as they are in this film. The ultimate question is whether a film like this belongs in a mass-market movie theater. I can see why it is not making much money since I doubt if the mass audience has any idea what I am talking about, especially since the mass audience’s heartless and crass adulation is what is being shown so vividly. I even liked parts of "Requiem for a Dream" and "Black Swan." It is sad when you compare the likes of "Mother!" to these other films.

The only thing shocking about "Mother!" is how bland it is. You know when you get a joke but you still don't find it funny? Well, I understood the message and allegory of "Mother!" but didn't find it interesting or thought provoking in any way at all. The film is so bad that it doesn't even deserve to be called pretentious because that would imply an ounce of ambition or vision on the directors part. It doesn't help that "Mother!" has the subtlety of a ten ton hammer and doesn't even add an original spin on its retelling of the bible.

Some movies are too smart for their audiences and don't deserve the hatred they receive. "Mother!" is not one of them. It is the art-house equivalent of a Transformers film. It deserves to be hated and it deserves to fail. Only gets a 2/10 because I generally like the director.
