Cheesy B movie schlock and I loved every minute! Very much feels like a transplanted 80s movie.

The main problem with the movie was that storyline was predictable from the beginning. The plot could have been better. Expectations go high when studio takes 20 years to make a reboot. Overall, a total enjoyment (if you watch it without high expectations).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was really good along with its visuals, the fight scene was enjoyable to watch but around the last 30 minutes of the movie felt very rushed and I just don't like the fact that the main character has nothing to do with the Mortal Kombat franchise at all. Also, I wish more of the Mortal Kombat cast were in this movie, and for characters that were in the movie, they have a short role in it. Expand

There are two major issues, Mortal Kombat never "officially" occurs and a stupid amount of content is shoved into the last thirty minutes of the movie. It definitely could have been improved, but it happily takes the throne of it's predecessors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat definitely tries to provide a storyline similar but at the same time they also try and get themselves away from the original Mortal Kombat storyline. First of all, the action is AMAZING. While it didn't exactly exceed my expectations, my expectation for the action was very high. Each character keeps their moves from the games, so its great to see them come back and with an actual budget unlike the 1995 movie. The kills in this movie are awesome as well, and to me the action is just the highlight of this movie. I also loved how faithful the kills stayed to the characters fatalities, like how Kung Lao killing Nitara is just like Lao's fatality in the game, and I love that. However as most people complain about, the plot is too different. Instead of Shang Tsung hosting a tournament, as Earth realm has to choose its best to keep their planet from being invaded by the Outworld, the tournament never even happens...its just a battle of who can kill whos champions before the tournament even starts. While this was obviously done to avoid Earth realms champions dying (other than Lao), it can still disappoint you at times. The movie does characters and casting VERY well though, the actors are fantastic and make you interested in them at times. They also change the characters up very well. Kano as most people say is the best character in the movie, or its just me. Kano will make you laugh, and its hard not to laugh at his lines. However I really wished that his death was done better, instead of being stabbed by something just like that. Blade is better, and compared to the 1995 movie Sub-Zero is given WAYYYY more time and is an entertaining villain in his fights. While Scorpion is only in for the first part (and eventually comes back to fight and kill Sub-Zero), hes still a solid character and I love his actor. But the obvious problem everyone will point out is Cole Young, who shares heritage with Sub-Zero. I thought they were going to have him turn into Scorpion or some **** but he just comes off as bland as times, like he's the main character in some Wattpad fan-fiction, as much as I hate saying it, because his weapons are cool as all hell. I'd say characters are an upgrade from the 1995 movie, costume design for SURE...but its hard to compare a big-budget film to a film like 1995 MK.

Finally I'd just give Mortal Kombat an 8/10. It's the start of a series of movies, and I think its a solid start. While there are some flaws with the plot, the soundtrack being a bit TOO forgettable, its not a bad movie. And I recommend it to action and fans of blood.

The character is poorly written and trying to interweave his story with established characters from the franchise just doesn't work. I spent much of the movie looking forward to the moments where Lewis Tan isn't speaking. Another issue I had was the tonal shift any time Kabal is on screen. While I highly enjoyed his presence, every time the film would put focus on him it was like watching the movie shift into parody territory and it can feel jarring at times. The fight scenes are where the film shines brightest just as it should be. Aside from Scorpion and Sub-Zero's fights, Liu Kang's fight with Kabal was my favorite. The film is by no means perfect, some of the CGI is janky as hell, especially the close up shots of Goro and Jax's arms. But overall it is pretty good for what it is. Anyone expecting Shakespeare here clearly has never played a MK game in their life. We came for the fights and the gore. The film absolutely delivered there. Grab some popcorn, sit down, turn your brain off, and just enjoy the ride. Expand

The battles of Mortal Kombat will as well. A victory, albeit flawed. I’ve been a casual fan of Mortal Kombat since the arcade days. I also wouldn’t say I’m an avid fighting game player. However, this movie was purely fan service and misunderstood by those who aren’t fans at all. If you’ve watched the first movie or the second, you know there’s a little bit of a niche when it comes to Mortal Kombat. Action, gore, cheesy lines, and oh, overacting. Mortal Kombat (2021) does what it does well. Give amazing fight sequences, provides the gore we know and love from the series as well as leaves us wanting more. However, Mortal Kombat (2021) doesn’t do what it does well, and that’s writing a good script. There are parts in the movie where it feels very.. “Si, se puede (Yes, we can!)” and character development seemed rushed. Definitely with the new character Cole Young. As for a lot of the reviews I’ve seen they’ve all said “the movie could’ve done without Cole” or “Cole is for the new fans”. While I agree with those statements, Cole’s storyline, albeit vanilla, provides a bridge for plot. Else it’d just be the first Mortal Kombat movie, everyone shows up in one place and fights each other in an actual tournament. Come to think of it, that isn’t so bad. Not much of a plot, and no character development.. oh wait, THAT’S THE NICHE OF THE MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIE SERIES!! This movie has a plot, this movie leaves us with something to look forward to. This movie for what it is, gave us what it is, and that’s a classic Mortal Kombat movie. Anyone expecting more are obviously spoiled by more modern day cinema, more specifically ‘The Avengers’.

If you’re gonna give this movie a watch do it with an open mind and open heart. You don’t watch Godzilla vs. King Kong for the plot, you watch it for the monsters and actions. Do the same.

From the day I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade over 25 years ago I have been playing this game. I have unremembered hours of time sunk into this game series over those 25+ years and to this day I am still playing MK almost daily. We are up to MK11 now, but it is really MK, MK2 and the Ultimate that really hold my heart.

My point is... I am a MK fanboy, so take this with a grain of salt.

This movie was **** awesome!!!

The only thing that sucks about it is that if you are a fan you're sure to see some of your favourite characters die, and that is depressing, though of course death is never the end in MK! I am not sure what people are expecting but this is an old school American Martial Arts film. Think "Bloodsport" but modern. The movie is a weak, and I mean weak, framework to get people into a fight sequence. While the plot works, it never is able to rise above the fact that it is a framing device for the fight sequences. This is not a weakness of the film, this is the film makers understanding what they are making and who they are making it for. We are not forced to sit through much mellow drama or other assorted crap.. it is just blood and gore fight sequences pretty much non-stop peppered in with some fun jokes.

What makes the film really step up a notch is the amazing performance of Kano. He carries the movie as he is fun to watch, and funny as **** In fact Kano and Kabal are both fantastic in this movie. Everyone else is taking it a little to seriously. Still the casting is just boss. Scorpion is perfectly cast from Hiroyuki Sanada, and Sub-Zero being played by Joe Taslim is genius. (Can not wait for him to come back as Noob Saibot). Chin Han dose a perfect Shang Tsung and well, really, all in all.... everyone nails it.

The movie has its problems. The forced game lines like "Finish Him" and "Flawless Victory" stand out like dogs balls. With Kano's "Kano Wins" the only one that works. This is probably the films biggest issue, while the dialogue writing is actually really good, particularly the comedic stuff with Kano which is all working, the attempts to call back to the game constantly breaks the reality of the movie.

The gore is not as gory as I would have liked. It is not nearly as gory as the actual modern games, apart from a few "fatalities". If you have seen "The Night Comes for Us"... that is what the gore should have been. More vicious and brutal. This is more like "glory shots".. so the gore is there, but it is more cartoonish than brutal. Even so, in the modern age of Disney and WB comic book films with all the bloodless violence having actual gore and blood in a mainstream movie is 5 aces as far as I am concerned, even if the Indonesian Martial Arts film scene is way in front.

I do not really know what more people could have wanted from a MK film. Lets not pretend that the original movies are some kind of high art. You see some great realisations of your favourite characters, you see them fight... all in all it is a much better MK film that I expected and I was very happy with what I saw.

Verdict : Round 2.... FIGHT!!

I enjoyed it. But that being said, the movie is extremely shallow in the middle (aka the guts of the film) I think it is a big case of the director trying to do too much in too little of time and it hops around so much that you don’t really get time to develop relationship with any character enough to give a damn. Also, the baddies are clearly what makes this movie good, and they deserve more screen time. Making sub zero so menacing is literally what made this movie any good. And joe taslim deserves a damn subzero mythologies like movie. Also I think they could have went with more horror like themes to make the villains even more terrifying. Kabal looked amazing until he spoke. I think there needed to be another 40 minutes to make you give a damn and develop these characters more if you are gonna try and tell this many stories in one film. That’s where the original movie shines because it was clearly More focused on the main 3 characters. But is worth mentioning that the soundtrack is great with the swooping synth keyboards along with the pounding drums. I also approved of almost all of the cast in their roles, I think I just wanted more depth from the dialogue. Bottom line this is not a great movie, but that’s not to say it isn’t any fun. It’s actually very fun and has a ton of potential for strong follow up sequels.focused. Expand

Its a martial flick based off a video game....a very entertaining one at that. Surprisingly lots of humor (specifically from Kano). Manage your expectations and enjoy it for what it is. Decent martial arts/action sequences, funny, blood and gore - all checkmarks. CGI so-so, story so-so. Entertaining overall without expecting every actor to be Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour - check! Probably the best movie based on a game for sure.

With Mortal Kombat however there was still some ground left to be covered. Namely, the addition of blood and guts in order to be more faithful to the video games. So when I heard the property was going to be resurrected on the big screen with a liberating R-rating I was completely onboard and must say that the added brutality does lead to a lot of exciting fight scenes. Still, I'd be hard-pressed to call this is better than the 1995 original, and that's due to some pacing issues.

Say what you will about the Paul W.S. Anderson film, but the action came front and center there as it should have. Here though, after some exciting fights in the beginning we are treated to a middle section that takes too much time explaining the mythology of the tournament and emphasizes training montages designed to flesh out protagonist Cole Young for the audience, before reaching the final act that somewhat rushes through what should have been the most exciting battles and culminates in an anti-climactic, "wait for the sequel" ending. Bit of a bummer for those of us who just wanted to see nothing more than a bunch of fantastical warriors beat the crap out of and kill each other in gory ways the entire time.

As for Young, the film exclusive original character has been a point of controversy for some time now. Many fans have pointed out how his role in the story could have easily been filled by Johnny Cage who is actually from the source material, and viewed his inclusion as nothing more than another case of Hollywood unnecessarily changing elements from the games. Something that has led to the majority of video game adaptations falling short in the past. Personally, I understand why he was created, as he serves as more relatable proxy to introduce newcomers to the world of Mortal Kombat than a loudmouth movie star who would have spent the whole time hitting on Sonya Blade anyways would have been. Plus, they already had Kano as the comic relief. It doesn't help that Cole is about as interesting as a block of wood though and that Lewis Tan is responsible for most of the worst dialog and acting. If they find a way to not bring him back for the sequel I won't complain.

Writing woes aside though this was still a really good time. It does a respectable job of portraying fan-favorite characters (Mileena is questionable...) to the point I was even a little sad when some of them died. The action is also very fun and suitably grisly. Showing that, while these things still aren't getting the best reviews from professional critics, the video game movie curse has definitely come to an end. At least in terms of providing entertaining experiences that can be enjoyed by wider audiences that is.

While the first film in 1995 was a decent hit; the follow-up in 1997 disappointed fans who had grown weary of the PG-13 take on the series.

Subsequent efforts such as the 2011 television series also left fans wanting more; especially since the game series had become even more graphic and violent.

An animated film released in 2020 gave fans a taste of what they wanted as it featured graphical violence which many fans believed was essential to properly catch the spirit and action of the series.

The latest offering in the series “Mortal Kombat”; reboots the cinematic universe and gives fans the intense, brutal, and graphic violence that they have demanded. The film keeps the basic premise that the Outworld realm has won nine tournaments in a row, and based on the ancient laws; one more victory would allow them to take control of the Earth.

Raiden the Thunder God (Tadanobu Asano); who has been tasked with protecting Earth looks to assemble and train a band of champions to save Earth. Naturally, this is not going to be easy as Shang Tsung (Chin Han); is not willing to follow the rules of the tournament and dispatches his top fighter (Sub Zero (Joe Taslim) to dispatch the champions of Earth before the tournament in a clear violation of the rules in order to ensure total victory.

What follows is solid and very graphic action which contains gore and brutality on a level that almost kept the film from earning an R-rating. The action sequences are well-choreographed and there were some great recreations of classic moves by characters from the game series which were really well utilized and did not seem like gratuitous pandering.

While the plot is fairly simplistic and does not deviate greatly from the source material; it does give a larger backstory to the universe. It was really enjoyable to see many nods to the franchise throughout both subtle and overt and while some characters were glaringly absent which was a surprise; the characters that were included were really solid to see and the door was wide open for their inclusion at a later date.

While the cast does not contain any star power in terms of what Western audiences might expect from a major studio release; the ensemble works well and do a great job in bringing their characters to life.

The film leaves sequels wide open and teases a character that in my opinion was a glaring omission from the film. That being said; “Mortal Kombat” gives fans a solid adaptation that does not shy away from gore and violence and gives fans the cinematic experience that they have wanted.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well paint me red and call me Clifford, it's a Mortal Kombat movie with serviceable direction and some actual gore. A few nothing-special fight scenes with some fan service in the form of fatalities and special moves (not to mention Kano's mouth) is really all there is to stitch together the slow scenes, the story is pretty been-there-done-that and (spoiler alert? maybe?) the power unlocking bit feels like a tacked-on plot contrivance... But it was fun, and I'm just not inclined to poke that many holes in it considering how far we've now come since Annihilation. Expand

The story doesn't live up to the standards of the newer games, and at times the dialogue is awful. Some characters feel genuinely wasted, and the decision to center the story around a character who isn't even from the games is deeply confusing. The story still has some good ideas, and the action, especially towards the end is pretty good. That being said a lot of the movie feels sort of sloppy. With some scenes feeling completely unnecessary while others end just a little too soon. Not to mention some jarring cuts between scenes. Dialogue ranges from alright to awful. Its decent.

It fits the mold of what you would expect. Pretty CGI, extensive martial arts & presumably wire-fu. The basic set piece of the video game.

It makes a weird step to try to seem fresh with some of its character choices. It also sets itself up to likely be a trilogy of films. Question is, why?

Its definitely as good as the original Mortal Kombat was back in the 90s for its time. It has ample easter eggs to hunt for and hits a lot of lore choices along the way. It just really does not serve a lot of purpose that has not already been covered by the original. All that is really getting added is higher budget graphics and updated rosters with a few left for future sequels to "unlock"

Its good, and serves its purpose. Just like the original it will be mostly forgettable for being a video game film adaptation that isnt terrible.

Personally I would of liked a cat and mouse revenge take set in feudal japan than all the cheesy modern day stuff. That would of made the film a whole lot classier for sure. At times this Mortal Kombat felt like Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 7
Acting: 8
Plot: 5

After the disastrous box office bomb and critical flopped of 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, there were no Mortal Kombat movies for nearly two decades until the direct-to-video release of 2020’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge and this movie. As for this movie, it is a reboot and not connected to the first two movies. Unlike the first two movies and just like Scorpion’s Revenge, the reboot is rated R.

An MMA fighter named Cole Young (Tan) and his family are attack by Bi-Han/Sub-Zero (Taslim) but Special Forces Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs and his partner, Sonya Blade (McNamee), manage to rescue them in time. Jax stay behind while he fight Sub-Zero but he end up losing both his arms. Once Cole got his family to safety, he and Sonya go to her hideout.

At her hideout, he learn that about a deathmatch tournament called Mortal Kombat. The tournament was created to give Earthrealm a chance to defend themselves from Outworld. Now that the latter have won nine out of ten tournaments, they just need to win one more tournament so that they can invade Earthrealm legally.

Cole also learn that he has a dragon marking which means he has been chosen to represent Earthrealm in the upcoming tournament. Cole and Sonya reluctantly recruit an Australian mercenary, Kano, after being attacked by Reptile. Together, they travel to Raiden’s temple where they meet the other fighters, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, in order to be train for the tournament. Meanwhile, a soul-eating sorcerer, Shang Tsung, with the help from his minions have begin killing Earthrealm’s fighters with dragon marking before the next tournament starts.

First of all, I’ve got to say that this reboot is good. It is definitely much better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Not only it is much better, the movie is faithful to the source material. The movie cashed in on the rated R and the inclusion of the franchise’s iconic signature, Fatality. This is what Mortal Kombat should be. Full of bloody, gore and violence like the video games which the first two movies do not have due to those movies being rated PG-13. The fighting scenes are really well done and much better than the previous movies. It is so well shot that it feels you are watching cutscenes from Mortal Kombat video games.

The characters in the movie resemble the characters from the video game which is another reason why this movie is faithful to the source material. The acting in this movie great especially Joe Taslim and Josh Lawson. For the former, he played the character very well as an intimidating villain like he is the main antagonist of the movie instead of Shang Tsung. As for the latter, he is perfect for the role of Kano, Besides sharing the same nationality, Josh is very much as Australian person you could find in real life. He is also played the role of comic relief really well which I cannot stop laughing. He stole every scenes in the movie. Let’s not forget about Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion in the movie. Despite not having much screen time, he played the character very well and he even get to say his iconic catchphrase better than how he said it in the trailer. I hope to see him more and play bigger role in the sequel if there is one.

On the bad side of the movie, I felt the storyline in the movie is rushed. Because of that, some characters do not have much developement including Cole Young. Speaking of Cole, I felt that he was overshadowed by the other characters to the point of being forgettable due to Cole being movie exclusive character. Shang Tsung did not even have much screen time as the main antagonist and the role was pretty much took over by Sub-Zero.

Nevertheless, this movie is still good but neither the best nor worst video game movie. As far as I know, this movie is definitely much better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation which I have said earlier. Whether you think is movie is better than the 1995 movie or the other way around, is up for debate. If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat, don’t miss this one. I cannot wait for the sequel especially how the ending teases another famous and iconic character from the video game.

But seeing something just as iconic as the latter makes me believe it a little more, Mortal Kombat movie is not some amazing recreation of the game but a competent argument for the 'Video game movies are now good' side.

The Good
A lot of things were well done, primarily the fight scenes and I believe that the character's personalities are well captured from the overall mythos of Mortal Kombat franchise.

The gore was welcome and so was the competent CGI that was used to create this movie, some uncanny valley stuff pops up here and there but everything pretty much holds up.

The best part of the movie was Kano however, I did not expect to enjoy the smart/foul mouthed Australian stereotype portrayal. I guess casting a true blue Aussie like Josh Lawson paid of well. I was genuinely sad to see him die, hopefully some Shang Tsung sorcery will bring him back for a sequel. Shout out to Sanada for giving a short but great performance as Hanzo/The face of the MK franchise aka Scorpion.

Jessica/Blade, Mechad/Jax, Han/Tsung, Lin/Liu, Huang/Lao and Asano/Raiden all looked like they enjoyed their time on sets and really got the essence of the MK franchise in their interactions.

The Bad
My one hope is that Cole does not come back in the sequel or if he does they give him the Cage treatment from Annihilation and then transfer over the POV of the hero to the actor that plays Cage.
Cole was quite boring just stumbling from one set piece to another except for the end where he faces off vs Goro. I get the need for a audience viewpoint into a new world but do all these slapped on characters in such franchises need to be a wet towel, I'm sure they can do better.

The pacing was a bit off, going briskly from plot point to plot point at a good speed and then just turbocharging into the climax suddenly it was a bit abrupt but manageable.

All in all this was a fun watch just like Sonic, not gonna be watching this again for a while but hopefully there will be a sequel.

The spirit is there and even though the 95 movie will always be my jam this is a good attempt nonetheless that deserves one more chance to get it right.

It feels like its 80% action scenes jumping from one to the next. As much as I enjoy tons of action, some of that could have been cut down to help with the story which was very weak and at times completely nonsensical even for MK standards. When it comes to characters, everybody got decent screen time for their fights though some not as much as others but all of the main characters were extremely underpowered in this movie including those that should be far stronger and the bad guys are practically all jobbers with nothing going for them besides having their names given for context even though they should be more important down the line. Speaking of characters, I actually did like our new protagonist Cole. I feel if he is included in an MK game in the future, he might be appreciated more but as it stands I still wish he was not in the movie and instead was another character that people do know. Game-based movies have improved quite a bit recently. On the one hand, it is still not a masterpiece. So I'm for? I didn't know whether to look forward to it or not, but I tried the film anyway. The very first 7 minutes, which were already released on the Internet before the movie came out, will draw you into the action. It's like John Wick. Not much is expected and we will immediately get tons of violence, which are delicious, but here and there I found CGI a little worse, but otherwise the action scenes flawless. Immediately, we find ourselves from the world of Mortal Kombat on planet Earth, which caused me to feel bad, because I was afraid that the whole film would be from our world and that we would get the opportunity to look into the world of Mortal Kombat at the end, but I can reassure you that this is not the case. You will enjoy Mortal Kombat world enough here, although most of the film takes place in the same place, where several will take place, but I will no longer deal with spoilers. The main characters have not grown very close to my heart, but they are not bad. In short, it's just not my cup of coffee. Quite a few messages fall to laugh. I would compare it a little to the Rangers of the Galaxy. I repeat a little. I don't mean the characters, but the jokes that come here and there. Well, since I didn't have to have characters here, I was quite afraid of how it would develop. Fortunately, everything turned out well. The action, as I already mentioned supr, and I enjoyed the final battle, where there was also a smaller revelation, which I will not reveal again, but I will only say that it is great and makes sense. In short, I want to say that the end didn't save it, but it definitely helped the film a lot. Overall, a good film for me, which I recommend, but probably only to fans of the game series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you came into this movie expecting it to win awards, be profound, or to see an American film have fight choreography on levels similar to The Raid... there's nothing "wrong" with that, however I'd recommend re-evaluating your expectations so you can have more fun movie-watching. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Joe Taslim steals the show as Sub-zero. Ludi Lin, Max Huang, and Hiroyuki Sanada are all excellent, especially considering they each had limited screen time. Most other characters are fairly forgettable. Josh Lawson as Kano was about 60/40 hit or miss and could get a bit irritating. I loved all the references to the games. The opening scene is absolutely fantastic. The final fight is a lot of fun as well, but not on the same level as the opening scene. For anyone complaining that "they don't actually fight in a tournament," I think that's a little petty. The final act of the movie is very much tournament style fighting and reminiscent of the source material. Understandably, the minds behind the film understand that they can't just keep making movies about another tournament and another tournament and another. I like the idea of introducing the characters and mythology first, trying to make that film as audience pleasing as possible, so you can come back and do the tournament in a later film. Expand

Expand

Good entertainment, fans of MK will definitely enjoy. A bit shallow story-wise. Would have enjoyed more fleshed-out characters (Kabal and Mileena). It's a solid 7/10.

I will admit, the whole movie seemed a bit rushed. There didn't seem to be much character progression even though the cast fit the characters perfectly, apart from the over theatrical Liu Kang.

But in all honestly, it was great fun to watch and it clearly has huge potential, given they listen to fan-feedback for a possible second movie. Just a little rough around the edges.

But a super high budget fan-film. The second problem I have with this movie is that some characters don't get enough time to establish themselves.
But that's not to say that I didn't enjoy all of it, the production values are really up there, the cinematography looks beautiful, the script is fine, the story lays the foundation in a solid way, the performances are iconic enough to where I can see these characters come to life, and the fight scenes. Needless to say they are AMAZING. The blood and gore was awesome to look at.
In the end, I enjoyed this movie for what it was, and I hope the sequels build on what worked while removing what didn't

The CGI was at worst passable and awesome at best. Some of the main characters felt wooden whereas others are god damn amazing and those really good characters do carry a fair amount of the movie for sure. Some fight scenes were amazing and some others were too short and were only just decent or meh. This movie to me felt like it suffered from a lack of time and resources but the vibe and the vision is there. All in all, I would really like to see a sequel and see where they take it, especially with a higher budget and more time Expand

When my friends invited me to watch a movie with them I did not expect it to be the New MK movie and was less than thrilled. After seeing the movie for the first time I can honestly say that it passed my expectations by an exponential amount. The choreographed fight scenes were exhilarating to watch, the character cameos were on point, and the cheesy one liners were not overused. I enjoyed watching a diverse cast of actors that fit well into their roles with the exception of Cole Young played by Lewis Tan. I didn’t particularly think his acting was on par with his cast members and kept wondering why he was picked for the main role of this movie. He did exceptionally well in the fight scenes but his delivery in the more conversational parts of the movie were lacking. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. Expand

I honestly didn’t expect it to be “Oscar” level filmmaking, and well...I wasn’t wrong. The film is a **** ton of fun. Anytime action was going on, I was having a blast, but past the first 7 minutes of the film, the story just sort of loses any bit of weight. I couldn’t have cared any less for the main protagonist, who is a new character created just for the movie. The film works best when focusing on characters that we know. Some characters fall more short than others, but again I kind of expected that. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are by far the characters the film-makers took the most time and care with, with Kano and Raiden falling next in line. The rest of cast fall into various levels of suck - but again I had a blast watching it. I have to be honest, though

I personally will be buying the film first chance I get on Blu-ray. So that should tell you something. But I also totally get why this movie is a pure failure for a lot. For me, it’s just so much fun, and I hope they continue to expand this world with more films.

The simple plot is that MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) joins with others who have special abilities to take on the evil forces from Outworld. Obviously, the plot serves as a background for the numerous violent encounters. As action goes, there are a few inventive treatments among the brutal bashings and bloody bang-ups. Nothing else matters. There have been better battles in other films, but fans of the game will likely find this one sufficiently action-filled and brutal. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat 2021 is hard to say its bad. It’s not good, but it’s not Mortal Kombat Annihilation bad. The film focus’s around Cole, a new character added for the film to take place around. Cole is an average guy with a wife and young teenaged daughter. He’s a past his prime MMA fighter who takes last minute calls for a couple hundred bucks. He, of course, loses his first couple of fights because, lets face it, he needs an arc. When it comes to faithfulness to the games, again, its mixed. The characters were fairly faithful and the tournament aspect. The problem comes when they discarded the tournament for some back alley fights because the bad guys want to kill everyone before they get to the tournament. There really isn’t a lot to say about the movie. You have a dragon tattoo? You have to unlock magical powers and fight. Yes, instead of great skill and fighting technique, its about magical powers. Kano has an eye laser that somehow shorts out when Sonya throws a bottle of stuff at it. How a magical, completely biological eye laser shorts out? Beats me. Jax gets magical metal arms that are pretty bare bones (excuse the pun) at first, but when he unlocks his magic super power, they grow into crazy cybernetic punching machines that give him super strength. While most of the others had to go through beatings and harsh training for theirs, Sonya unlocks hers as soon as she gets her tattoo. The only GOOD thing in this movie is Kano. The actor portrayed him well, if not a little less brutal than what he normally is. He seems to be a jokester punching bag for the first half, then a backstabbing incompetent in the second. He was funny as hell to watch though so I got some entertainment out of it. Expand

Make no mistake, the movie makes some pretty woeful mistakes, namely not including any sort of tournament element in the plot and trying to explain away why certain characters have laser vision/can control ice/grow cybernetic arms(?), but I suppose I'm not really here for anything other than seeing characters fighting. The movie at least has fights - and some pretty good ones, at that. I only wish that potential future installments bring more of the game's spirit into the fold and onto those eye-catching exercises in set piece design. Expand

The story is alright, but as usual they made some changes that can range from minor to making an MK fan question "Why?". The middle of the movie drags on a little bit, but nothing to bad.
