Mad Max is an action movie, but with much more layers than movies on genre, and even without watching previously movies of the franchise, plot ingeniously suggests what happened before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is without a doubt a masterpiece. One of my favorite movies and definetly the best movie of 2015. (sorry the revenant and the martian) The story is good enough for an action packed, adrenaline fueled, kick-ass, heavy metal and car movie. Everything is great about this film. The characters are amazing, the plot is great, the cinematography is some of the best I have ever seen and the explosions and all the crashes look amazing. I am glad they did so many things practical and without CGI, because some shots that do have CGi in them, take you out of the moment. The acting is fenomenal. Tom Hardy is acting at his best, and each and every war-boy looks fantastic. Immortan Joe is a very cool villain and I was satisfied when he got taken out. One outstanding scene from the movie i wanted to mention, is when Immortan Joe and his army of War-Boys find out that Max, Furiosa etc. go back to the citadel while its unguarded. It gave me goosebumps to see countless goons run to their car and go after the war-rig while the music kicked back in. The music btw is SUPERB!. Every time the weird, blind guitar guy got into a shot, it made me feel like a badass. He is without a doubt one of my fav part about the whole film. The way the fure comes out of the guitar is SO **** COOL I CANT EVEN EXPLAIN.I was so happy when they included him in a fight scene near the end of the movie. So yeah, Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever made. Everything is so well made. I recommend it to everybody. Expand

It's probably the most unique Blockbuster movie I've ever seen. The story has Minimal background and full fledged action. It's fast paced, violent and simplistic. It throws out some of the awkward action and overall movie cliches, like a protagonist, romance, character development, dialogue, story background, etc.

On a technical level this movie is Brilliant. The cinematography is on point and makes all these violent bloody scenes look strangely beautiful. The special effects are realistic too, Miller just knows how.

I really liked it and this movie does get a lot of hate - which is understandable. But calling this movie (and the people who enjoy this movie) moronic, pointless, stupid, etc. is just not right. This movie is brilliant in it's own amazing way - and if can't see that, don't insult the people who do.

Normally sequels that were made so many years after the last movie are mostly awful, cash-grabs and made in a way that disrespects what came before. This however is a valid choice for the best Mad Max movie, has great characters and breathtaking visuals. It is a long and intense chase with character development aka self discovery. It works from start to finish and I will praise the first scene where Max monologues that it is uncertain if he or the world is more crazy. Like before Mad Max is set in an apocalyptic future after civilisation ended and the survivors struggle to survive in a dessert wasteland. It is an eaten or be eaten world. He is captured by a band of warriors called Warboys who serve the legendary Immortan Joe who is worshipped by his followers like a higher being. This is the beginning of the adventure as not everyone is happy under Immortan Joes rule. The story is amazing. Many claim it is just a long chase and it is correct. But it is entertaining, intense, full of great characters and developments. I must also praise the visuals, set, cars and costumes. It is like the “Burning Man” festival up to eleven in Mad Max style. Everything is stylish and looks amazing. All of us were majorly impressed and praised the movie. Then there is the great cast. Firstly the question if someone other than Mel Gibson can play (Mad) Max Rockatansky. The answer is yes and Tom Hardy is fantastic in his role. I never question him or his performance. Charlize Theron as Furiosa might be even better and I hope she gets a spin off. Such a great performance. Those two work well together. Then we have the hidden gem with Nicholas Hoult as Nux, Hugh Keays Byrne as impressive Immortan Joe, Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus (Yes that is his name and I see it as Monty Python reference ;-) and the wives with Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, Zoe Kravitz and Coutney Eaton who all are strong assets. Special praise for John Howard as People Eater and the name is no mistake. The whole cast works well and I cared about them. This is the hallmark of great characters and many other movies fail in this regard. The characters and story enhance each other and made this movie so good. Of cause I must praise director George Miller who is also the writer together with Nico Lathouris and Brendan McCarthy who deserve praise too. The movie is excellent from start to finish and well crafted. Like I said the visuals are amazing and the sound track rounds it up. Overall this is probably the best movie in the franchise and a rare example of a late sequel that works. An easy recommendation for nearly everyone. Expand

It is true that I have heard comments about people who have not been able to digest it by its frantic march and massive madness and I admit that it is true, the film only stops a little in 3 times, beyond that, the action is endless and it is not a calm action, it is an insane and energetic action.

But besides that amazing action, they gave borderline breathing space for the action which is just enough to don't turn you off, the story is completely distiled to it's essence and much is told visually which is amazing achievement, the music is 10/10, the movie is incredible satisfying and you feel it was worth more than the ticket price.

I wasn't disappointed. Now, it was a bit short on plot but as a spectacle, it was stunning. The action scenes were amazingly done, and when they move away from the action to focus on the story for a while, it's no less compelling. Now, don't watch it expecting a completely original, thought-provoking masterpiece that will leave you thinking about life. Watch it expecting a fun, visually stunning action movie with interesting characters (though some are a little underdeveloped) and so much action, you won't believe it was directed by a 70-year-old (let alone, the 70-year-old who directed "Happy Feet"!). The fourth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, it is an Australian and American venture produced by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, RatPac-Dune Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures. The film is set in a future desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities. It follows Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to flee from cult leader Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his army in an armoured tanker truck, which leads to a lengthy road battle. The film also features Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton.

--Critical reception:

-Mad Max: Fury Road received widespread critical acclaim. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 97% approval rating and rating average score of 8.8 out of 10 based on 348 reviews. The site's consensus reads, "With exhilarating action and a surprising amount of narrative heft, Mad Max: Fury Road brings George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise roaring vigorously back to life." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating, the film has a score of 90 out of 100 based on 51 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". CinemaScore polls reported that the average grade cinema audiences gave the film was a "B+" on an A+ to F scale. Some critics have named Mad Max: Fury Road one of the greatest action films ever made.

-The film has also been praised by feminist critics on several fronts, including the dominant role taken by Furiosa and the range of atypical female roles including the wives and the gun-toting Vuvalini.

--Sequels:

-In 2011, Miller and McCarthy found during the writing process for Fury Road that they had enough story material for two additional scripts. One of these, entitled Mad Max: Furiosa, had already been completed, and Miller hoped to film it after the release of Fury Road. In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in four more Mad Max films following Fury Road. In May 2015, Miller told Wired: "Should Fury Road be successful, I've got two other stories to tell." Later in May, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the next instalment will instead be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. In October 2015, Miller revealed in an interview with TopGear.com that they had two scripts for sequels which they ended up with during the writing process. Later in October in an interview with Digital Spy, he revealed that Furiosa won't appear in the sequel and clarified that Mad Max: The Wasteland is just a working title for the sequel. Miller reaffirmed his intent to continue the franchise after reports to the contrary surfaced following an interview in January 2016.

Awesome action sequences. Great storyline. Who knew that the dystopian future would be full of color, lots of bald folks, craving for water? I was expecting weird creatures but a balding Charlize Theron is good enough for me

A somewhat decent action film? Maybe. The best action film of all time? Certainly not.

This movie delivers extremely well crafted intense action with extravagant (but far from ridiculous) visuals. If it were a concert, it would be like Rammstein. Two hours of chasing in the desert, the movie is basically a really long chase sequence. Dialogs are ridiculous, Max probably talks like 4 times in the whole movie, and he mainly grunts for the most part. The vehicles and characters are cool, but a lot of things make no sense, like the dude with the flaming guitar, wtf?! Beside, the movie is called Mad Max, but really the main hero is Furiosa, Max is just a secondary puppet that helps her, because she's hot and she travels with a bunch of supermodels. Ok, visually was good, but the movie has the overall depth of a tampons commercial... Also, for the first time, it was OBVIOUS that the actors re-dubbed themselves.

If you wrote down all of TomI love movies that can suck me into there world, without forcefully showing me everything, with overly long opening tracking shots, or a lot of exposition. Mad Max certainly doesn't have a lot of one of those. If you wrote down all of Tom Hardy's dialogue, it would roughly be the length of a couple of greeting cards. He takes after the Terminator, in T-2. Only interested in completing his goals, working with the few words he needs. Until of course he comes across people who don't speak in grunts, and he must expand his vocabulary. The great things about this movie is that it knows how you are suppose to use CGI for action sequences. Most action movies feel that bigger is better, and immediately construct a 30 story metal larva eating the Himalayas. I know computer animation takes a lot of work and takes enormous effort, but the sods who make animators go through all this are the ones I blame. Mad Max: Fury Road understands that CGI is the frosting on the cake. Making every bit of car crash feel more crisp, which works because they actually made a car crash first. If you just make a car crash using nothing but CGI, you are just making your cake with nothing but frosting. Yes we all like frosting but what's wrong with the cake batter you were using Michael Bay.
Just going to move on from that paragraph now, it was getting out of hand. If you haven't heard this yet the action in Mad Max 4(y Road) is quite good. Oh that's what you have been hearing since it came out? okay let's talk about other things. Have you heard about Furiosa? Yes? What about the flaming guitar guy? All the time? Well there isn't much more to talk about really. Mad max isn't exactly charming his way through the movie, but he helps fit with the movie's identity of broken consciousness. It's true that his actions are mostly based on survival, so he doesn't talk much because of this. He communicates through looks, like when he is trying to snipe an incoming vehicle, he does these little inflections that indicate he knows that Furiosa is the better choice to use the sniper. Little things like that make the movie. Yes the movie feels like pulse-pounding action, but it actually takes a good amount of pauses to let you breath. Once you have your breath you're ready to go. It would be hard to make this pacing not feel schizophrenic, but George Miller does it. George Miller feels like he deserves a lot of the credit.
The story for this was created using storyboard; this technique is often associated with animated features. This helped them tell their story through visuals with little words. It also gave use some of the best action sequences ever put to film. Really what makes the action feel like a whole other level is everything surrounding it. Pole dancing warriors with exploding sticks wouldn't quite feel right in say the Fast & Furious movies. It needs a production design that shows a world where SNM, post-apocalyptic, flame obsessed nuts rule the world. Also watching a weirdo spray chrome in his mouth is only right when we watch the bizarro culture it came from.
Overall the film provides us with a fascinating, eccentric, but still cruel world for great, or decent characters to blow each other up in. The action is thee past only in the hands of the Mad Max world.

The special effects and action was great and who doesn't love a post apocalypse setting? But this movie suffers from very boring characters who were both uninteresting and poorly developed. I never cared for the Max himself, in fact, I rank the old movies as average or below, but the other characters were very 1 dimensional and I just didnt care what happens one way or another. The movie reminded me of Transformers, lots of pointless action and no heart (just replace cgi with live action). Overall, I would never watch this movie again so its slightly below average to me (remember, 5 is mathematically average on Metacritic). Expand

Not that there is anything particularly wrong with those things but, when they play up those attributes and abandon others, like character development, plot structure, and practicality, you get a movie like this. In simple terms, this movie is a 2 hour car chase. Without any reasonable amount of time put in to discovering the motives of the protagonist or the antagonist. What is it that makes Max the good guy? Was that really clear? Why did this chase even happen and why was it so violent and costly? Was that clear? If you show a movie where cars chase each other for the whole run time, you should at least know for sure why. I understand that the antagonist's wives were stolen, but what made them so important? Why was so much risked and lost over these women? See, this movie created a smoke screen of fast paced action, flash, and flare, without actually creating anything profound. It abandoned the older Mad Max films' gritty, thrifty, and witty ways. Some parts were cool, there's no argument there. But that wasn't good story telling. Expand

The film is live, you believe what is happening on screen, in fact 80% of tricks were performed without the use of special effects. Post-apocalyptic world is shown competently and detailed. At the same time new Mad Max is essentially a stretched two hours Short chronologically located between the first and the second films of the original trilogy. It is indicative that the script is represented by the 3,500 storyboards. So it turns out that too much action makes look heroes unexamined, their actions often are not motivated, and some dialogues do not cause anything but a confusion. And even such lightweight script manages to include the typical large blockbusters logical blunders. But do not care, it is a great attraction - the madness in its purest form! Expand

Though I have not seen the first three, I opted to see this one due to the great word of mouth and ultimately, I was incredibly satisfied. With an absolutely riveting world created that seems vast and unique in nature, Fury Road feels just like an epic action film should. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, are all fantastic, especially Hoult who really steals the show at times. The makeup is great and completely convincing. However, the real star here for me was the beautiful cinematography (which is gorgeous btw) and phenomenal special effects, which were the definition of perfection. The car chases featured both very well, which is why those scenes were undoubtedly my favorite and probably some of the most exhilarating and well plotted car chases I have seen in a film. Truly a great action film, if I was an action junkie, this would be a 10/10, but I am not. All the same, this is still a great film that provides all the heart stopping action and thrills that it should. Expand

However, the happy ending and the general tone of the film, apart from one twist that is surprising enough, are not dark and bitter as they should for such a movie, and for such a setting. The title "Mad Max" is somewhat misleading, the true heroin of the story being Furiosa, who makes all the important decisions and has way more character development than Max. But that's not really a problem, since he doesn't seem to have a lot of personality. Anyway, Mad Max is one helluva show, and probably one of the best action flicks I've seen for a long time.
Also: this movie contains an electric guitar with a flamethrower. That should convince any sensible person that it's worthy of two hours of your time.

Road to Nowhere

This movie was absolutely deplorable. Sure no sex or swearing but it paled in comparison to the original Road Warrior and Mad Max. Where was the dog and Gyro Man when you really needed them?

The acting, if you can call it acting was limited to 10 word utterances. Hardy was god-awful with his Aussie type accent if you can call it that. In fact the accent changed towards the end of the flick. The only redeeming features where Charlize Theron and some of the action sequences.

But while it was loaded with action so much of the film was speeded up to supposedly heighten the action which it did not. The plot was so thin as well.

All in all a total waste of time of true Mad Max fans.

Its hard to believe that George Miller could pull off such an action packed visually stunning film 30 years after the last Mad Max film Beyond Thunderdome. The film follows a simple premise and it sticks to it. The film appropriately in 3D and I think its the best 3D experience I've had. Tom Hardy is the new Max and this is the role he was meant to play. This movie is going to make him a household name and not just "the guy who played Bane". Charlize Theron is just as badass as Hardy and its nice to finally see some women getting the action treatment because that's long overdue. I just could not find anything wrong with this movie. It gets your heart racing and its great visually. I can't wait for a sequel. Expand

I'll echo many others and say it's one of the best action moves ever.

Stunning fast paced movie with non- stop action and jaw dropping stunts. Great characters, costumes and camera play. True to the Mad Max series? My favorite movie in years!

For the longest time, having watched dozens of action movies, I assumed that you can't possibly make a movie made of pure loud action for two hours straight. Mad Max proved me wrong.

It started with a loud bang and that never stopped until the credits started rolling. The movie instantly throws the build-up part out of the window, jumping straight to the main point of itself - noise, big cars and explosions. And not the Michael Bay type of explosions for the sake of explosions. Every crash, every hit makes sense.

Character start at near to no relationship to each other. And not a single minute of the movie is spent developing them with nothing going on around. All character traits are revealed and developed during all the mayhem, going on around. And when it isn't shoved in your face, you start to appreciate and understand, what is going on, by yourself.

[Spoilers below]

Even though quite a few character die throughout the movie, we realise that it happens during a massive chase and movie makes sure you don't have time to mourn fallen heroes. A swift move of respect is made before refocusing on the task in hand - trying to survive fire, bullets and spears, heading in your direction.

Brilliant movie, which will make you hold your breath for all 2 hours and make you want more.

It delivers on its crazy characters and over the top, beautifully shot, practical action sequences. Hardy and Theron are great in their roles and Miller has truly expanded on his world in an interesting way, showing new interesting concepts and developing characteristics in the new characters, humanizing the unlikeliest of them. Is it the Mad Max 2 of this generation? No, but it sure isn't that far behind. Expand

However, the storyline is so original and refreshing unlike other action movies. I'm a big fan of Tom Hardy's works and he's really good in this movie. Although as a titular character, he doesn't really do much in this movie. As we all know, Furiosa, played flawlessly by Charlize Theron, is the one who steal the show and she's the reason this movie exist. It is so pleasing to see a powerful female character where this has been an issue lately in hollywood. Although, I think this movie is a little bit predictable for me but watching it surely is one hell of a ride. The action and the car chase sequences are very thrilling and satisfying. The graphic is awesome, you can't really tell if that's CGI'd or not. It's CRAZY Expand

The lack of story or character development made the film incredibly boring to watch. The classic Mad Max films were so much better than this drivel.

Many of the shots are composed specifically for 3D so try to see this in IMAX 3D if possible. The story is basic and narrative nice and easy to follow - this is a comic-book movie after after all. but where the film excels is the art direction, costumes, production, sound design, and most of all the incredible action sequences - some of the best ever created. Perfectly-edited chase and fight scenes. Extraordinary action. Very brutal in places, but the strong female characters help to add some balance. Charlize Theron is the real star of this film and still stunningly beautiful despite the one arm! Expand

Tom Hardy and Charlise Theron are very good as the central characters. The overall story is fine too. What separates this very good action movie from great action movies is (as it often is) the bad guy. The main villain is awful and mean and vicious. But there is nothing explaining his evil. All of his followers are equally unmotivated. While the characters of Theron and Hardy get a great deal of back story and motivation, the villains alas, do not. It still is very entertaining, well filmed and well edited. And I love action movies too. They are my guilty pleasure. This just did not have enough for me. Expand
