I know there's no love lost for fans when it comes to "Crystal Skull," but I never really hated Spielberg's last effort in this franchise and I think I feel similarly about this one. This is far from even the second best entry in this line of films, but I can't say I ultimately hated it overall. I definitely dislike parts and certain decisions made left me scratching my head, but the central McGuffin is undeniably cool and the set piece design is top notch. This, like a lot of other big-budget films I've seen recently, felt like it needed a more cohesive vision for what it was supposed to be. Expand

My wife and I have been around long enough to know that there's nothing new under the sun. Today's audiences are too jaded to just sit back and enjoy a good story, expertly crafted and filled with characters we all wish were real. Indy V was a great yarn with a great ending. A loving homage to all of the previous Indiana Jones movies...in fact in some ways more 'realistic' than Indy's previous (and quite outlandish) adventures. The ending surprised and touched me. I'll definitely see it again. Expand

I came into the film with neutral expectations and was honestly blown away by how good it was for me personally, and I was deeply invested in the film. Say what you will, but that's my opinion on it.

The story was incredible, the acting superb, and really, what else is needed from an Indiana Jones movie?

I was VERY worried about this film going in for the reasons many have mentioned, as Indiana Jones is pretty much my favourite film series...but they got everything right. It is hard for me to imagine how anyone could love Indy Jones and not love this movie. It was in part dark and gritty, in part sad, but on the other hand full of discovery, thrill, and adventure, solid characters, the familiar wonderful music, amazing locations, action scenes that were way better than what I was expecting, and just everything you can love about this series. It was exactly what I longed for, and a perfect ending for my favourite film character of all time, given his age.

The Last Crusade remains my favourite in the series, but Dial of Destiny more than holds its ground with the other films, which is saying a lot.

For the pros, Harrison Ford does an amazing job, and he’s the only legacy Lucas film character I feel was done properly. He’s definitely changed since the last films, but so has the audience. The plot is pretty solid, the time travel aspect wasn’t handled poorly, to my surprise. The first 20 minutes are the best, they feel right out of a classic Indi movie. John Williams score is also amazing throughout. My biggest criticism is Helena. Her character is incredibly unlivable personally, and her character seems to change for what the plot needs. She goes from completely self centered in one scene, and selfless in the next, with no character arc in between. She’s funny at times, which is a plus I guess. Thankfully, she doesn’t take the spotlight away from Indi overall, which I’m happy about. Despite not being a perfect film, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is a solid end to the series, and light years better than crystal skull. Expand

The strengths are strong though. I think the first hour+ is great, and the last 30 minutes are great, but it had a bit of a soggy mid-section. I say soggy, in particular, because some of it took place over water. Setting aside some pacing issues, I was often entertained by this film which is....why I go to the movies, and why I watch certain ones again and again. I think this fits nicely into the pantheon of Harrison Ford's career, with a great performance as "old Indy" that is equal parts tough, humorous and brave (Indy's character traits). I found it inspiring how well he stepped back into this role. He might have done this for a million reasons, and maybe even $20million reasons, but at the end of the day I like to think he did this for himself and for the fans. One last Indiana Jones adventure. How can anyone hold that against him, or the filmmakers? It's always a convoluted situation when a Studio gets behind a big tentpole franchise to put out a movie costing hundreds of millions of dollars.....but as movie fans I think it's important to not look a gift horse in the mouth. Is Dial of Destiny perfect? Of course not! Most Indy movies are not (except Last Crusade, which is just about a perfect sequel). But what we have here is a good movie with great moments, punctuated by some -- at worst -- decent, but watchable passages. Expand

At a reported cost of $300 million, this is the most expensive rehash of 1980s Indy tropes ever made. If you are eight years old now, it will make you want to play the video game (which is in the works). This may be it's main reason for existing, to feed the franchise. As a critic, I'm aware it's a script in search of a soul; or, which has given up on having a soul. As a fan, I felt like I was time-traveling back to the first three Indy's for a fourth. There is not any acknowledgement of how audiences and the world has changed since the 1980s. In this Indy5 is "opium for the masses" in a world desperately in need of local, regional and national mobilization against corporate monopoly governing making our world a dystopia. I think most Indy fans will appreciate the Indy-flavored opium and admire the amazing effort and professionalism which is up on the screen. Expand

It is a "dry" film in the sense that it is technically flawless but has very little humor and practically no "horror" scenes. Very pleased to report that they were all talking a load of rubbish. This was a very good and thoroughly entertaining movie, with all of the complaints I'd heard about, non existent. The first 25 minutes flashback in 1944 is pure Indiana Jones gold then we settle in for the next 2 hours with an interesting adventure with a slightly different tone to the others because of the new era Indy finds himself in and the character's age. This is not a criticism. What I enjoyed was watching Indy's confidence grow as the movie went on. He starts off feeling very old and useless, but is given a new lease of life when a new adventure falls at his feet. When he first is flung into action, we see him hesitate and second guess himself thinking he can't do it, but his confidence increases with each scene and soon he is back in control. Its a fascinating journey to watch. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a fun character too and is nothing like the stories we were led to believe online. The pair work well together on screen and the banter is fun. I really recommend this film. Don't listen to You Tubers who's opinions are rendered useless because of their anti-Disney, anti-Kennedy agenda, nor the stuck up Cannes critics. This is a really good fun adventure movie for the whole family to enjoy. Is it as good as Raiders or Temple of Doom? No, because those movies were the pinnacle of perfection and nothing would ever touch those classics. But it's leaps and bounds better than Crystal Skull, and this may be controversial to some, but I rate this higher than Last Crusade. Expand

I expected a goofy, campy movie but the story and the characters were grounded and there was the tone of sadness and tragedy in the story. Völler is the best villain in the franchise: ruthless and arrogantant. His sheme and his desire for the artifact actually creates a real threat (unlike the previous movies). The action in the movie is toned down compared to the other installments and not over the top. Overall, a very worthy chapter in the great Indiana Jones-franchise. Expand

The original trilogy are classics that have inspired so many other filmmakers and their creations. Despite the lavish budget spent on the film and its action sequences, most of this film felt derivative of the original trilogy and many films that were inspired by the legendary hero. Let’s get to the negative parts: The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls sadly started a trend that was continued in this instalment: its overuse of CGI. Indy is essentially an ‘analog series’. Cruise with his MI series and the last batch of Bond films understood this. The action sequences sadly gave a sense of an uncanny valley as many of the sequences are given this treatment, more so in the 1st half of this film. However, putting that aside, the film makers and Ford themselves have a great passion for this character and it shows. Despite what may be an untold amount of studio interference, Mangold and co were allowed go off the rails in the 3rd act and took Indy in a different direction, and this saves the picture for me. Ford himself gave this role his all, knowing that this will be his final hurrah as the adventurer. So, is it worth a watch? For sure. But like any other older music bands whose new music has never reached the peak of their original works, so is the ‘fate’ of the Indiana Jones series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hatred for this movie is unjustified. It is far better than Crystal Skull. Quite obviously it doesn’t match up to the original three but is far more in tune with the spirit of Raiders. The opening twenty minutes are brilliant save for a few angles where the illusion falls down slightly (and they cannot de-age his voice). Indy’s character arc is very poignant- a broken man living in a society that’s passed him by who wants to give up but is ultimately rebuilt. It’s too long - shaving 20 minutes or so would have greatly improved the pace of the film and thus the film itself. Fleabag is fine - I was more annoyed by Teddy who is a poor man’s Short Round and the character really isn’t necessary. Ditto Antonio. Some will hate the ending though I actually thought it was done very well in the context of the story they’d set up and if we’re being objective really isn’t any more over-the-top than evil spirits flying out of a gold box and killing Nazi’s, water from a cup curing a gunshot wound or a massive UFO emerging from a jungle…I won’t give spoilers but most have clocked the time travel idea but don’t worry this isn’t Back To The Future and it works quite cleverly for the narrative (many will miss the subtle nod to Sean Connery). I went in with low expectations but was pleasantly entertained. Again, it’s fine, calm down people, enjoy it for what it is. There’s a lot of vintage Indy here: belting Nazis, exotic locations, tomb raiding, an actual ancient artefact being the McGuffin and something the critics haven’t picked up on- there is no “cheesiness” in this movie. Some amusing moments but nothing that will make you cringe. Nothing will ever be as bad as using a fridge to survive a nuclear blast or that little cretin doing a Tarzan swinging through the jungle with monkeys… everyone blasts woke Disney but - guess what- Indy is allowed to use his gun and have a raiders style shoot out with Nazis here (he wasn’t allowed to in Crystal Skull if you remember- didn’t shoot anyone). When I think of how much damage some legacy sequels did to iconic 80s franchises (Terminator, Die Hard, Aliens etc) Dial of Destiny doesn’t devastate the Indian Jones legacy as many are claiming. Every couple of years I put Crystal Skull back on to give it another chance and never get to the end because it’s so ridiculously bad. I won’t be feeling like that with Dial of Destiny and will happily kick back one Sunday afternoon and enjoy it again when it drops on Disney plus. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The underwhelming ending of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is better If you come in thinking that the lame rumored ending is true. Otherwise such an action packed adventure needed a more exciting ending. That is at least better than the ending that some fan on crack made up. That Indiana Jones erases himself to make it his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) who went on all his adventures all along.
A lot of fans weren’t excited because they actually expected that ending. Thinking they knew for sure that was the ending.
Thank god it isn’t but the one we got is kind of cute and heartwarming, just underwhelming. Now that I got that out of the way. The movie feels like a more old school Indiana Jones adventure than Crystal Skull.
Indiana also isn’t pushed aside so his Helena Shaw gets all the action. He actually gets more if you count the CGI beginning. While Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) was made to be a villain in an Indiana Jones film. Toby Jones is also perfectly cast as an Indy sidekick in the 1930’s.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is well cast and has the look of an actress from the 30-60’s. You’re just not going to like her throughout if you think she is there to steal the franchise. Which it is dumb if anyone thought that. When Harrison Ford will never ever let anyone replace him as Indiana Jones

It’s long and needs some tightening up and has too many chase scenes. Some of the dialogue and more emotional scenes are good but feel slightly off. Nevertheless it’s really enjoyable (in a way that Crystal Skull was not). The new characters work on the whole. The whole movie is not quite the nostalgia fest that the trailer suggested (though there’s a little bit of that). Seeing Indy as an old man in the late 60s is probably my favorite part. A bit wistful.
One good thing going for it is when it’s over it leaves you thinking about it for a while, even if you’re not sure how much you liked it.

The film is the fifth chapter of the legendary series on the most famous archaeologist in Cinema, and ends it with a flourish.
For the first time Steven Spielberg is no longer directing, just as George Lucas is absent in the conception and writing of the subject, of the story (but both are still executive producers).
The engaging and interesting screenplay, written by Mangold together with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and David Koepp, is an exact mix of action and insight.
Although this film comes out 42 years after "Raiders of the Lost Ark", it is set in 1969, 33 years after the 1936 story and picks up the events 12 years after "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
It can be considered a better episode than the previous 2008 film, although inferior to the first and third.
Directed by James Mangold works, is effective, and does not make Spielberg regret too much in infusing the work with the right dose of passion, sense of entertainment and irony, on the iconic notes of John Williams.
Formally it is impeccable: the breathtaking style of the sequences - especially the chase ones - goes well with the quality technical-visual sector (scenography, photography, accurate editing; but also the special visual effects that rejuvenate the protagonist are excellent).
The eighty-year-old (but in dazzling form) Harrison Ford is not affected by the passing of time, indeed, with his character he travels through it; while his duets with his goddaughter color the story of a fragile and unexpected humanity (Indy this time is caught in a new perspective, the melancholic and twilight one of the final part of his life and his retirement from academic life, but also the one that he sees uneasily in a world that begins to flow differently and in which he doesn't know if he's ready to face one more last race).
The rest of the cast is all in part (Mads Mikkelsen as villain is convincing. Phoebe Waller-Bridge brilliantly manages to play Helena, making her shrewd and feisty – with her self-sufficiency, audacity and resourcefulness, she carries an echo of the past, rekindles the enthusiasm for adventure and gives new life to Indiana Jones. Finally, Ethann Isidore, who gives the face to the very young Teddy, can't help but make one think of the Ke Huy Quan present in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"), and their characters they show a very touching human frailty (Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies, driving Indy to the airport, tells him he misses waking up every morning wondering what adventure the day will bring).
Associated with the theme of the inevitable passing of the years is also the idea of Time travel (one's problems cannot be erased by changing the past, but one can always remember the good that a person has given and experienced...).
The archaeological mystery linked to the Antikythera machine built by Archimedes is truly intriguing and also gives meaning to the last adventure of an Indiana Jones who lived for a long time in the past and now has to rediscover himself and the importance of the present.
In terms of narrative construction and staging, there is perhaps a lack of authentic and intense charm (sense of wonder, epic scope and original ideas), but the film, which moves between nostalgia and vitality, is nonetheless very enjoyable and pleasant. The film is a thrilling and exciting adventure, which, between evocative atmospheres and great entertainment, good rhythm and final emotion, greets the saga with respect and affection. Score: 7 / 7.50 out of 10

I didn't liked character of Helena Shaw, but somehow I got convinced that relations can go this way. Especially with how this relation is developing.

When reading other reviews, I got impression that others thinks that Lost Ark was perfect movie. IMO it's not. 8 because Uncharted was a horrible movie and yet it get 6 from the audience.

This movie is not hyper woke by any stretch, nor is it overtly political. It just has a spunky female character. Everybody chill out. What's overlooked in these discussions is that these movies have always been this way. It was a trope in the 80s for there to be a male lead who was treating a female character like a damsel in distress, only the female character turned out to be ballsy and not need saving at all. It's Princess Leia in A New Hope, grabbing the blaster, telling her "rescuers" that they're basically idiots and leading the charge to escape.

As far as what's ACTUALLY on screen in this movie, it was decent. It felt underwritten. The jokes don't land. Ford seems to be giving a committed performance and it's a pleasure to see him put his heart into something and remind us all of the actor he once was before he settled into grumpy cameos. The final sequence was truly beautiful. But much of the movie is noisy and overlong, intersperesed with real charm.

It was definitely mixed but I enjoyed it.

Have to say, I really don't get why so many (esp. the sharper critics) are bagging on a sincerely made, heart-in-the-right-place tribute to the original movie. After the low point of Crystal Skull things could only go up. And if I'm being honest, every film after Raiders was diminishing returns. While I'll always defend Spielberg, it seems like it took James Mangold to get us back to the essence of the original film - and know to know what to do with one character in particular. I'm surprised Disney can make a good movie these days. The characters of Helena, Teddy and Indy fit well into the adventure cinema, as well as the main villain of the story. Granted, some offerings of this type genuinely deserve whatever grief they get, but others, such as the latest installment in this long-running franchise, don’t merit unfair potshots fired at them just for innately being mainstream offerings. In many ways, this is very much cut from the same cloth as its action adventure predecessors, but there are enough distinctions, new developments and lesser-known elements to keep it fresh and interesting throughout. Now, this is not to suggest that this final entry in this action adventure series is without its faults – it’s overlong, some of its action sequences could have been easily pared back (despite generally being as good as they are) and the storyline tends to sag somewhat in the middle. However, Indiana Jones has once again given us a rollicking good time with a captivating narrative, an intriguing assortment of twists and turns, and an array of colorful characters all vying for their piece of the pie (if not the entire pie itself). The film also provides fans of the franchise with deftly handled touches at achieving closure for the series, without dangling obvious or ambiguous carrots of there being more to come or any kind of impending reboot. Director James Mangold successfully puts the series to bed and tucks it in nicely while rounding off any remaining edges, something that it and its fans deserve. So, to all those cynics out there who are shamelessly bashing this release to be fashionable or hip, all I can say is “pipe down and lose the attitude already.” Expand

Helena takes over at some point and she is really unlikable and annoying. The artifact this time around feels weird for an Indy movie but not as weird as the Crystal Skull. James Mangold is a solid director with a great track record and he delivers good action, but in this day of stunt supervisors directing your John Wicks and Extractions, the set pieces are a bit lackluster. The beginning sequence on the train was incredible. The ending into the portal was absolutely fantastic. There were some odd choices like how they used Harrison's current voice for scenes with 80's Indy deep fake, which looked real but still slightly artificial, should have adjusted his voice to match his age at the time as well because he sounded like an old man (which Harrison is today). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched it with my 10-year old son in the cinema. It's solid. It's not Raiders. It's not Temple. But it's solid. Was that de-aging necessary? Probably not. Could I have told if it wasn't for the Interwebz? Probably not. Would I love to see Indy on a giant suspension bridge hundreds of meters above a crocodile infested roiling river, clothes hanging in shreds from a shredded body, instead of a Goonies sized bridge across a small waterway? Yeah. Is Harrison Ford 80 years old? Yeah.
Man. It's Indy. It was fun. My son had fun. It won't win awards and I won't pretend it's memorable. But we got Indy back for one last - decent - ride - that's good enough in my book. My only real complaint is that they should have given Marion more to do...also Mutt RIP (good decision).

This movie had good acting, action and fast pace from start to finish, and we both can only come to the conclusion that if you didn't like the movie, then you must not have liked any of the others in the series. My immediate reaction afterwards was "this might be my favorite in the whole series". Cheers Expand

And for good measure, I had rewatched Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull - my two least favourite Indy movies - before seeing this new movie. And this was a pleasant surprise! Very pleasant even! Maybe the first quarter of the film, I wasn't too convinced yet, but I opened my heart, and I did love the film! Absolutely better than the fourth one, for sure.

Now, was this movie needed? That's a tricky question. If Indiana Jones 4 didn't exist, then no, this new one would feel unnecessary. But in the real world, this Indiana Jones 5 offers a rather entertaining epilogue. And now, I almost feel bad that the film apparently couldn't find an audience. If you were a fan of Indiana Jones, but were disappointed by Indiana 4. do give this new movie a chance, this might just bring you the closure that you didn't know you needed.

Both casting (except Mads Mikkelsen) and acting was very basic. They got no further than aiming their weapon or throwing a punch. Furthermore, the film lacks a true conclusion to all the hard work Indiana Jones has put in during this adventures. All in all, an entertaining (but too long) film. Expand

I don't like how they portrayed Indy as being sad and sulking about his life, and this was a really negative point for me, but it doesn't ruin the movie or anything.
It can be super over the top, but Indiana Jones' movies have always been like that, and it's part of it, it doesn't take itself too seriously and neither should we, it's a cool and entertaining movie.
I am a bit contrary to most Indy fans out there, I really like Crystal Skull and dislike Temple of Doom, I know I'll get hate for saying this, but it's just so you know where I stand when it comes to this franchise.
Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) can be annoying at first, but she manages to become likable as the movie progress. Maybe Harrison Ford was only in it for the money, but he still delivers great acting and I gotta say, the beginning of the movie, with young Indy, is fantastic both in technical terms and scenes, the whole train section was amazing.

After the opening, the rest of Dial of Destiny entertained me in an old-fashioned way. It is still adventurous, curious, and fun, which is all I ask for in an Indy movie made in 2023.

Based on everything we knew about the movie, I thought it was gonna be bad or mediocre, but it was actually great. Now, I don't expect anyone to agree, it's for sure a hot take, but to me, this movie was everything I didn't think it would be. The first 15 or so minutes where Harrison Ford is de-aged is fantastic. It's fun and exciting and feels like it could be a scene from the original trilogy. After that, ew flash forward to 1969, where Indy is around 70. After that, the actual plot starts and we get introduced to Helen, Indy's goddaughter. A lot of reviews made her sound innsufferable, but she wasn't, but she wasn't per say likeable. i wasn't fuming whenever she opened her mouth, but I never got attached to her. Both other acts are also fantastic. The action isn't as spectacular as the other movies, but still a lot of fun, the comedic bits work well, and the ending is truly perfect, and I'm happy we got this movie, and didn't end it on the note we did in Crystal Skull. I do kinda get why people wouldn't like the movie, but to me, it was everything I didn't think the movie would be. A truly fantastic final entry and a movie I will defend with my life! Expand

Fantástica película de aventuras y de Indiana Jones. Además de un gran cierre para la mejor saga de aventuras de la historia del cine.

A very satisfying end for the Indian Jones series and again a wild and entertaining ride. I salute Harrison Ford, my favourite actor of all times.
