So Marvel can actually make good movies!!!!!!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy is great. This is a film that finally feels like its own thing. It's a film that does not require you to watch any other movies first, and it sure as hell doesn't expect you to have watched some TV show either. The film introduces its main character with an awesome scene of him going to get an orb while listening to "Come And Get Your Love". I immediately felt invested and the film has great personality and style. It also has way better colors than any of the Marvel films before it.

The film in every way feels like a superhero film. It's colorful, loud and one of the most visually creative films in a long time. The action was plentiful despite being a little bit of a CGI chaos, and I loved the characters and I'm seriously interested to see Galaxy 2 purely for them. Last time I felt that was maybe with Iron Man, and it was definitely refreshing after watching a Captain America movie. Even though I'm not that into Sci-Fi I still enjoyed this immensely. The pace is solid and keeps everything moving even if there are some exposition scenes, all the action is creative, the story is pretty good even though a bit generic and the characters are awesome, especially Rocket and Quill. Even the score was good!

Just like the first Avengers film, this was a film that had so many fun and creative moments that I just couldn't help but smile. I would've liked a bit more characterization for the villain because he kinda sucked in typical Marvel fashion, but the qualities easily outweigh the flaws.

When Disney first announced it was paying a king’s ransom to purchase the complete Marvel Comics canon of characters, there was some skepticism that once the Golden Age had been mined and the Silver Age melted down, there wouldn’t be enoughWhen Disney first announced it was paying a king’s ransom to purchase the complete Marvel Comics canon of characters, there was some skepticism that once the Golden Age had been mined and the Silver Age melted down, there wouldn’t be enough left to cast a decent superhero belt buckle. Happily, “Guardians of the Galaxy” proves that you don’t always need a bonafide costumed icon to produce a bit of save-the-world fun, even if the story is barely-there laser blast fare — Star Wars minus the mythology.

As an action extravaganza, every penny of the film’s lofty budget appears on the screen. “Guardians” is a gorgeous-looking film filled with over-the-top makeup and sets, some of it quite stunning. It doesn’t strive for a moody, rain-washed authenticity like some other superhero films, but rather a garish cartoony reality, vaguely reminiscent of director Luc Bresson’s sci-fi work and those geniuses of perspective and four-color visual hyperbole: the Marvel artists.

The story revolves around space scoundrel Peter Quill (played by actor Chris Pratt of the TV sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” on which he’s crafted a likable He-of-Light-Intelligence persona that he reprises here) and Quill’s attempt to recover a metallic orb containing an unworldly force just waiting to be harvested by half the baddies in the universe. Quill, abducted from earth while still a teen by pirate-like space mercenaries goes by the moniker “Star-Lord.” He’s grown into a punky rebel among these salty space dogs — prone to flipping off policemen, drop-kicking pesky space lizards and blasting his classic rock on a Walkman to liven up the soundtrack (a little too frequently, it’s a vaguely cheap trick).

Pratt has described his character as “Hans Solo meets Marty McFly.” I would have preferred Hans Solo meets … someone further out of puberty. Pratt’s Quill is almost too much a boy-child to generate real gravity as the film’s lead. He wields a mean stun gun, but he makes an awkward leader and his moments of genuine heroics get lost behind the joking. The film ends, but he never matures. Still, he’s a likable lunk and the carry-over of his “Parks” persona gives Pratt cred as the Peter Pan of the Forbidden Zone.

Zoe Saldana (Lt. Uhura in J.J. Abram’s rebooted “Star Trek” films) is his grudging new sidekick and presumed future love interest, a deadly assassin recently turned away from the darkside. Saldana works earnestly at her role and manages to provide some weight to the otherwise drama-light screenplay.

Professional wrestler Dave Batista is another member of Quill’s team of misfits. Saddled with the rather defining moniker of “Drax the Destroyer,” Batista provides some of the film’s best laughs as a humorless yet utterly forthright hulk. He’s Mongo from “Blazing Saddles” decorated in a paisley of ritually applied scars atop real-life muscles that outshine the special effects for pure astonishment.

The final members of the Guardians are two CGI-rendered concoctions voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Cooper is Rocket Racoon, a genetically rewired Daniel Boone hat-in-the-making with an Einstein-like brilliance. Unfortunately, Cooper overplays him vocally, imparting a grating character that is less quasar than quasi-Bowery Boy. In a film that seldom abandons its video game pacing, Cooper’s racoon character is the one reeks most of a video game performance.

On the other hand, Vin Diesel, whose part almost entirely consists of the same three words, “I am Groot,” sprouts the film’s most poignant moments as a tree-man whose heart is far less hardened than his bark. His completely other-worldly appearance brings a needed whimsy to the space fantasy, unlike the slight color variations of its humanoids and that earthly racoon whose presence defies any real rationality. It is Groot’s laconic presence and the gentle moments he creates that lets the film pause long enough to show the heart “Guardian” could have used more of.

“Guardians” is certain to please audiences with its all-cylinders firing action, but Gunn would have been well-served to let his jets cool down more between sprints. His failing to tug more at the heartstrings and have us fall for his characters is odd, as I have a sneaking suspicion that Gunn was more concerned with cementing them into a franchise and less with crafting a fully realized film.

Perhaps with the thought of sequel-to-come firmly in mind, the film’s timing feels off. A prison escape chews up far too much running time, while some major plot points are barely given a comic book frame’s worth of mention. The result is a story that feels penciled in, but not fully inked.

But by the film’s finale, Gunn achieves his goal and his cast melds into a gang you’ll be willing to spend more time with in future installments, Awesome Mix Tape Part Deux, which is all any studio could hope for … in this galaxy or the next.

This movie is way better than I expected, and yet fell short on being a great movie. Gunn could have made the movie a half hour longer, giving more exposition for the villain, Ronan, and a little more time for the audience to understand where everything is happening and why. The "gang is back in town" feeling is forced and rushed, but the comedy pays off. Good CGI, good acting, but if the story was a little more patient, i could go for a 2h30 movie easy, and would be the most memorable adventure film in a long time. Believe or not, this lack of material makes you just don't care for what happens near the end of the movie. Expand

Guardians of the Galaxy represents Marvel's great experiment: a major motion picture based on a comic book series not featuring any "household name" superheroes. It takes place in outer space, a setting where few action/adventure movies have found traction in recent years. Although it remains to be seen whether this will represent a shrewd movie on the part of Marvel or a significant misstep, the resultant production is engaging for the most part and highly reminiscent of the wave of post-Star Wars space operas that emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The vibe, if not the specifics, is highly reminiscent of The Last Starfighter, Battlestar Galactica, Battle Beyond the Stars, and others. The fact that the movie's "present" is defined as being 1988 and the soundtrack is peppered with '70s tunes cements the retro feeling.

The basic narrative of Guardians of the Galaxy is the kind of light popcorn fare that comic books (and their spin-off products) can get away with. The plot is riddled with seeming inconsistencies (although I'm sure die-hard fans can explain all the limitations constraining the supposedly all-powerful orb) and a lot of threads are left dangling (presumably for exploration in the already-greenlit sequel). However, the characters develop a nice rapport, the dialogue crackles with wit, and the '70s songs add an element of freshness to the proceedings. The anticlimactic resolution, which relies in part on an unfortunate instance of corny physical humor, is a bit of a letdown but that's often the case with superhero movies, where the journey is more entertaining than the destination.

Visually, the movie overdoses on CGI - it looks a lot like the Star Wars prequels (although director James Gunn has indicated he mixed in so-called practical effects). The two non-humanoid members of the team were created entirely by computer. Groot, the walking tree-like entity whose voice is provided by Vin Diesel, is a triumph of artistry. A similar comment can be made about Rocket, who looks almost like a raccoon… but not quite. The 3-D falls into the "neutral" range of the spectrum in that it neither enhances nor detracts from the overall experience.

With the exception of Lee Pace, whose Ronan isn't as nasty as one might hope for a big, bad villain, the cast is well-chosen. Chris Pratt brings a mix of Han Solo-inspired bravado and Luke Skywalker-influenced heroism to his part. Zoe Saldana, adding green skin to her resume (after having been blue-skinned in Avatar), is effectively tough and conflicted as Gamora and her chemistry with Pratt generates the right amount of heat. Dave Bautista's Drax, who comes across like a semi-eloquent Hulk, provides some comic relief without going over-the-top. Actors in secondary roles include Michael Rooker as the bandit lord Yondu (whose weaponry is very cool); Karen Gillan as Nebula, Ronan's hench(wo)man; and Glenn Close as the leader of Xandar's military. Josh Brolin's interpretation of Thanos makes us wish that he, instead of Ronan, had been the main villain.

Despite a variety of unresolved narrative elements, Guardians of the Galaxy is sufficiently self-contained to work as a stand-alone film even though the goal is to make this the starting point for a long-running franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy is immersed in a characteristic evident in The Avengers--related movies (but not found in most other major comic book films): irreverence. By not taking anything too seriously, it allows cheesy plot elements to work where they might fail in another context. Guardians of the Galaxy is solid summer fun - not the mammoth epic we have come to expect from each new Marvel release, but a welcome entry into a moribund movie season.

The action takes place not that long ago but definitely far away, although the opening scenes are on Earth. Peter Quill (played by Wyatt Olef as a child and Chris Pratt as an adult) is abducted by aliens shortly after his mother dies of cancer. He grows up as part of a band of intergalactic thieves and smugglers and the first time we meet him as a man (with the code name of "Star Lord"), he's stealing an orb. It turns out that seemingly everyone wants the orb: terrorist Ronan (Lee Pace), who wants to use it to obliterate his enemies, the Xandarans; Thanos (Josh Brolin), the warlord who can use it to attain mastery over the universe; The Collector (Benicio Del Toro), who covets all rare and powerful items; and many lesser entities who plan to sell it. After being arrested and imprisoned (and having the orb taken away from him), Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with several of his fellow inmates: Gamora (Zoe Saldana), an "adopted daughter" of Thanos; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a literal minded mountain of a man who seeks revenge against Ronan; Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a genetically engineered raccoon with a bad temper and a love of guns; and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an Ent-like creature who speaks only one line: "I am Groot." The five remain united after their prison break in order to retrieve the orb and keep it away from Ronan.

Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as amazing as the IMDb rating (which this reviewer learned long ago is not something that should be taken to heart) and ecstatic reviews suggest? To me, not quite. Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' well made andIs 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as amazing as the IMDb rating (which this reviewer learned long ago is not something that should be taken to heart) and ecstatic reviews suggest? To me, not quite. Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' well made and entertaining? Absolutely.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' boasts spectacular special effects, gorgeously psychedelic colours, slick-yet-with-enough-visual-depth cinematography (nothing cartoonish or plastic here) and very colourful and atmospheric sets that more than effectively makes one think they are immersed in this galaxy. Costumes and make-up are also of very good quality. The 70s soundtrack and score is rousing and touchingly nostalgic. The action is beautifully edited, choreographed with lots of entertainment value and thrills and is at best exhilarating, there's plenty of it without feeling too much.

James Gunn directs with style and a sure hand, always seeming as if he knew what tone he was going for and who he was aiming at ('Guardians of the Galaxy' is far and above anything else he's done and his best overall direction is here as well. Personally really enjoyed the way that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was written too, the jokes are enormously entertaining and the film also has heart with a genuinely emotional opening.

The story is non-stop energy and compelling, with a nice balance of comedy, drama and section. It is not perfect, and is one of the film's weaker points, with a been-there-done-that feel, a couple of overly-sentimental moments and a couple of randomly placed moments that were not needed at all and just took away from the flow and tone of the scene (Chris Pratt's dance).

The characters are on the most part incredibly colourful and engaging, with a great chemistry throughout. Peter is a likable lead character and Groot is quite adorable and amusing, but Rocket the Racoon doesn't just threaten to steal the show, to me Rocket actually does steal the show. The one exception really is the very bland and barely developed villain Ronan.

Chris Pratt is highly charismatic, Zoe Saldana is suitably fiery, Karen Gillan is imposingly formidable, Dave Bautista induces lots of laughs and charm while showing a very intensely played vengeful side (though that was a little too hastily introduced) and a surprisingly well-cast Vin Diesel does a great job as Groot. Bradley Cooper stands out, being a sheer delight as Rocky. Lee Pace tries but struggles to bring any menace or dimension to Ronan, can't say I blame him as anybody given the role if written in the way it was here would have struggled to bring believability to it.

All in all, not perfect and not quite as great as all that but exciting, well-made and lots of fun, really enjoyed it. 8/10 Bethany Cox

That alone, and the fact there was a talking raccoon in the trailers had me very hesitant in going to see it. But after hearing how good it was from a few friends I decided to go see it. This movie has such a great soundtrack (if you like 80's music that is) and they also did a perfect job in casting, the acting was pretty awesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film really convinced me that Marvel is truly on top of the world. Even though I was very knowledgeable of the original Marvel universe in the comic lines, I knew nothing about these chracters, therefore i didn't know what to expect. i expected this movie to bomb but once again Marvel had done it. The major highlight of this film was the comedy. Each line made me laugh mostly because the film itself never really took itself that seriously because it knew how absurd the premise was. It is so engrossed in int's world that I didn't care that the film had a raccoon wielding a machine gun and a talking tree who can only say "I am Groot". These characters end up to be very compelling as they give their back stories and their personalities are fun to boot. Star Lord is your out of his luck collector, Gamora is the great warrior, Drax is the muscle who doesn't understand figures of speech, Groot is also the muscle, and Rocket is the foul mouth engineer. These chacters are so interesting and so funny that i actually want to sit down and have a cup of coffe with them. The CGI is obvious to spot but the world still felt organic due to the combination of sets as well. James Gunn was the perfect choice of a director since he knows what kind of movie this is and has fun with the premise. In fact he would be a decent replacement for Josh Weadon. Some did mention that Ronin was a lame villain since he wasn't that comedic but I thought it was warranted in order t contrast the humorous personalities of the main team. The biggest problem with this film though are the times when it takes itself seriously. The scenes are done well but they do produce an emotional whiplash For example, the opening scene had Star lords mother die of cancer and right after that he is abducted by aliens and then hunts for treasure. Another moment like that was when Rockect start to break down but it is after he gets drunk in a comedic fashion. Despite this though, the film is definitely worth your time and will make you reach for the stars. Expand

Out of all the Marvel films, this is the most well-put together comic book adaptation. Unexpectedly, the performance by Chris Pratt was great as he simply dominates the role as Star-Lord. I was a little skeptical on the directional choice of James Gunn. He has a history of writing and directing bad or mediocre films such as Slither, Scooby-Doo, Super, and Dawn of the Dead. I guess I was extremely curious on what this man can accomplish and how he can overcome his mediocre films and create something mind-blowing. And he did!

Leaving the theater I was amazed by this movie, recently I re-watched it and some of the magic has worn off sadly. The pacing can seem off and story has many moments of "that is convenient." Plus the ending has one of my favorite moments ever in recent memory, but sadly when you think about it the entire ending is really kind of stupid. Just sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy it. Many saw it as a big risk, having been adapted from source material that isn't well-known, and whose characters were possibly too silly for general audiences to embrace. Those people couldn't have been more wrong if they tried, as James Gunn crafted something truly special here. At this point it became clear that the creatives at Marvel Studios should always be given the benefit of the doubt.

The movie has such a unique voice, and doesn't feel beholden to the cinematic universe that it exists in. The characters have excellent banter, and are a joy to spend time with. They are flawed, but likable. They grow over the course of the film. It's visually spectacular and has an enormous heart. The only things holding it back from perfection are a few moments that go a bit too over-the-top and a forgettable villain. Otherwise, Guardians of the Galaxy is a total blast.

It's one of those films you feel like you love while watching it, but that love later turns into 'I liked it'. First, the good stuff: It is a lot of fun, it looks amazing on the big AND small screen and the soundtrack is out-of-this-world good! The characters are good on their own, they are fun and fresh and exactly what was missing in the MCU. Now to the bad stuff: While there are emotional moments and serious conversations, the movie somtimes feels like a joke-fest without any depth to it. It feels like it doesn't want to be meaningful. It wants to make people love it by being a rollercoaster of joy. Now, while that is not the worst thing, for me a 'team-up' movie needs to establish at least some form of emotional connection between the characters and while there certainly were moments like this in the movie, they didn't quite nail the 'we are a team now' feeling for me. This is also the reason why I didn't like the final confrontation of this film as much as I would have liked. This movie has a lot of heart, great characters, amazing visuals and music and it is definetly a must-see, but it's still not as amazing to me as other people say it is. I don't see myself rewatching it on a regular basis, but I was excited to see that the Guardians would return for a sequel. Maybe with a story that gives them more time to become the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. Overall a very solid entry in the MCU. Expand

But aside from it's Pulp Fiction-rowdy-rambunctious-funny type style, the story and it's characters do get flaked out at times, losing a bit of it's funk and groove, leaning on irrelevent sentiment when it should just be the badass hip-super film it set out to be, and not the kid-crowd pleasing happy-ending type film it ultimately became. But nevertheless, Disney's wuss-touch can't touch the fact that these Guardians are just too badass and watchable to drain out. I live for the simple things, like how much this is going to entertain you. Expand

Guardians of the Galaxy has got to be one of the funniest comic book movies of all time. The humor is on point, it does however let in some emotion which is nicely directed and does not have very awkward tonal shifts. There is sometimes some wonky CGI but that isn't too distracting. Ronan is not a very compelling villain and lacks in some areas. But Yondu (Michael Rooker) is a very good villain/anti-hero, he does not really want to kill Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) but he does not want him alive either. It's a fun chemistry. Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely in my top 5 MCU movies (for now) and is a solid movie in its own right, it is not interfering with the other MCU movies as much which gives it some breathing space.

While most of its novelty has worn off since we've gotten used to these characters, Guardians of the Galaxy remains a testament to Marvel taking one of their biggest risks. And it paid off.

While I think that it's a bit rocky at times and that the sequel is infinitely better, I have to say that the beginning and end are great.
Everything after "we are Groot" works wonderfully. The dance-off, the holding hands moment, the montage and, best of all, Peter opening his mother's present. That will always be my favorite part of the whole movie.

What I mean by that is you don't have to necessarily follow everything in detail to enjoy the film - there's plenty of CGI effects and otherwise visual action based entertainment, plus some amusing dialogue, hence its not exactly an overly boring watch. I particularly enjoyed this film for the soundtrack featured - songs from the 80s that I quite liked or certainly distantly remembered. I guess it does help a bit to know about the wider MCU, to get the full 'picture' as it were but I think you can still enjoy it either way. There's some fairly witty dialogue at times - nothing remarkable but it did make me smirk at times certainly.

It's all a bit over the top for some people, I imagine but for what it is, it's not bad. If your not a fan of sci-fi/fantasy films then you won't enjoy this but otherwise its a good enough watch, yes.

I'm happy to say I certainly did!

'Guardians of the Galaxy' is so enjoyable. It's 121 minutes of pure entertainment. It does, at least to me, have a different feel to it when compared to the nine preceding MCU films. That's not a negative for either this or those earlier productions, it just felt different to me.

I particularly enjoyed the cast, which features - as is customary at this point - a load of well known names. Chris Pratt is, probably, the perfect choice for Peter, he carries the role extremely well - his humour sticks out, but he also performs the more serious stuff nicely.

Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Michael Rooker are all thoroughly enjoyable too. Vin Diesel (kinda?) appears to portray Groot, which pleases me as someone who is a big fan of 'Fast & Furious'. There are a few others in there, including Djimon Hounsou and Benicio del Toro. Terrific cast!

There is a lot to like here. I look forward to seeing the follow-ups to it.

In the beginning there has to be an introduction that will either show something/someone important that the hero is going to need, or it is going to be something/someone that will come useful in the end. Then in the middle of the movie the superhero is using his/her powers to either test them out or to fight a bad guy (mostly for losing so that it can pay off in the end). And then there is a big CGI fight in the end. That's it. The rest of the movie is just spent talking, doing side quests and occasional comic relief.

I had come to observe this when I was bingewatching all the MCU movies after the release of Infinity War. I wanted to watch all the movies so that I could catch up with everyone in time to watch Endgame. And seeing all the previous movies - all 3 Iron Man's, both the Thor's and Captain America's, The Incredible Hulk - they were becoming too predictable because of the pattern that they were following. But then this came. And it was filled to the brim with unique visuals and dazzling CGI. I went crazy over it within the first ten minutes. This entire thing was so interesting to watch, the characters were so much fun, it was like this thing itself could be a separate franchise.

Normally in any film whenever there are more than 4 main characters I'm not able to remember all the names. It's easy to remember in games, shows or books since they are long enough to get me to memorise the names. But a movie, especially a sci-fi one, is barely two hours long. And after that everything is done. And yet not only did I remember the names of all the characters in the movie, I also remember how they were introduced. This movie has something of a charm to it. And that's what makes it so watchable. The only problem I have with it is that, well, it does become cringy at times, especially during the character introductions. I do understand that was done because it's a kids' movie, but it's not a "just for kids" movie. The sense of humour could have been a little better.

I really wish there was a spin-off series dedicated just to GotG. It's an entire world within itself, filled to the brim with lores. It's kinda sad that it needs to be in pace with the rest of MCU, because this is the one franchise with the maximum amount of potential. Thanos was only one of them. There are more.
