This movie was a complete letdown!

I was expecting a cheesy action comedy but all I got was a master piece that made me question whether Star Wars V was still the best sci-fi movie out there. How dare they go beyond my expectations!

The Quest Is On [Assemble Your Team of Ninjas]

For me the movie is about the journey that Peter Quill [Star-Lord] makes from a small time outlaw trying making up a reputation for himself. Then he finds his true calling when he is given the chance to save the Galaxy. He teams up with a very unlikely team of “Crazy Creative Ninjas”. They don’t step back in the face of a near impossible challenge. They improvise and adapt to the challenge in very creative ways.

It’s also about owning your own identity and try to direct how others define you. Both through your actions and what thoughts you share. To do your own Storytelling about you.
You are the one doing your own Self Narration.

You are the one doing your own Self Narration - Lord Sillion

So do take care of this opportunity to define your own identities. Your brain buys what it tells itself so don’t let others define you. Be sure that you are in charge of the message that you tell your brain. And, this is important, and that it is good message.

And just like Peter Quill, remember that your are not alone. Assemble your small team of Creative Ninjas go out on adventure together. They affect you as much as you affect them. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. So chose your team of Ninjas carefully.

So go forth and tell your story to both yourself and others so that the story about you and your legend takes shape and roots first inside yourself and then spreads out from there. And help your Ninjas tell their stories. This is your Quest.

I'm very happy to say this movie not only surpassed my expectations, but it blew me away. The comedy is spot on, all characters have amazing timing and genuinely funny and unique personalities. Chris Pratt is hilarious and a natural leading man, charming, funny, and pretty damn badass as he goes from a Han Solo type to a true Marvel superhero, worthy of the name Star-Lord.
I brought along my wife and another couple to this movie. My friend's wife was pretty sure she'd be falling asleep during this one, as it's definitely not in her genre (she generally likes movies based on Jane Austen novels). I was glad to see that everybody in my group was thoroughly entertained by this film. It's got great action, a very cool story (I don't know why on Earth some critics would call the plot confusing, it isn't), amazing characters that you can't help but love and care about, and more laughs than most comedies contain.
This is the first movie in a long time that had me quoting the lines as I left the theater. I actually wanted to see it again right away, and will definitely, definitely get it on Blu-Ray. Best movie I've seen all year, and as close to a perfect Summer movie as anyone could ask for.

The cast of characters -- WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, who has received roles in mostly mediocre action-adventure films throughout the early '10s, might get typecasted from here on out, but he's a very welcoming addition to the Marvel universe -- has Avengers-level chemistry and the comedic timing is impeccable, it's the funniest franchise in the universe so far. The 3D actually helps craft the film's spectacular visuals for once. If the $90 million box-office revenue in its opening weekend didn't suggest otherwise, I have a feeling Guardians'll be a mainstay for a while. Expand

In Gunn’s indie filmmaker hands, he did an excellent job with capturing the old comics and bringing them to life with this film. We get a Marvel film that is deliciously witty and off-beat, keeping the movie flowing with ease between happy; entertainingly hilarious parts and emotional, heart-breaking parts. All of those amazing qualities emit from the five characters that serve as our band of misfit heroes, with actors that were casted with perfection for their respectable roles. With all that said, this movie is truly a remarkable masterpiece of everything that you would want from a Marvel movie; that should be enjoyed by everyone. 5 Big Stars!!! Expand

I perfectly blends everything you love about Sci-Fi and add its own Marvel twist. The acting is fantastic, with Bradly Cooper and Chris Pratt stealing the show as Rocket and Star Lord. Vin Diesel as Groot is great and lends a lot of humor to the movie. Zoe Saldana is great as Gamora, making the character so interesting, that I wanted to know more. The real surprise is Dave Bautista as Drax. For this being his first movie since leaving the WWE, he does a pretty good job and has a few good jokes on his own. The humor in the movie is great, easily making it Marvel's funniest movie to date. Most, if not all, the jokes hit the mark and are clever. The action is top-notch and what we have come to expect from Marvel movies. I've seen some reviewers complain how Ronan isn't very interesting, and I don't really agree. Ronan is very menacing and Karen Gillan as Nebula, his henchmen, adds to his awesomeness. Overall, the movie is one of, if not the best summer blockbusters this year and definitely on my top 10. The hardest question I had to ask myself was whether I liked this or Captain America more. :) BTW Make sure to stay for the end-credits scene, it's a funny surprise! Expand

TrulyAfter failing to enjoy his previous works like "Slither" and "Super," I consider myself to not be a James Gunn fan. However his work with this relatively unknown group of Marvel heroes manages to exceed my admittedly low expectations. Truly it's one of the best sci-fi movies in recent years as well as one of the best superhero movies of the year.

It all succeeds thanks to smart *ss humor, big action spectacle, an excellently crafted sci-fi world, and a surprisingly touching story about friendship. It expands the Marvel cinematic universe into new territory. Single-handedly this film opens it up to countless new horizons and potential stories.

The excellently cast group of oddball outcasts come together perfectly. Their back and forth is often very funny even if some jokes do fall short. Overall it's not as funny as a movie as it could have been, but that's easily forgiven considering how great the story surrounding them is.

You can see that the events here play a role in the grand scheme of things Marvel has crafted for the universe. Somethings might go over the heads of those who aren't familiar with these characters outside of the movies, and because of that a big character that kicks off events might seem confusingly out of place. However this movies self-contained plot never really falls short because of that, outside of what I just mentioned.

The movies greatest strength is how quickly it allows us to grow and like these characters. They're outcasts, freaks, and loners who come together and form their own sort of family. It leads to quite a few heartwarming moments.

The action is solidly delivered with cool alien technology and great special effects. The aerial dogfights can bring back some fan favorite Star Wars moments. There are definitely things out of the norm for a Marvel action movie in the action department.

Overall it's a great entry into the MCU. One that has potential to branch out from what Marvel is doing with their heroes on earth. There's a world here worth exploring and expanding upon, and I for one cannot wait to see what comes next.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" soars. It's one that every fan of the MCU needs to check out. Some elements may alienate those without years worth of knowledge and insight into Marvel's comic book universe, but overall I doubt it will leave anyone too disappointed. My total score for the movie is an 8.9/10.

This is more of a fun sci-fi movie than classic super hero flick. It is just original enough most should not feel like they have seen this film a thousand times before, but not so original that it is just odd feeling. The pacing can be a little slow early on, but over all good pacing. Thankfully, they do not spend 95% of the movie telling back stories for each character. The villian(s) is little to cliche. I like how they pulled the team together. If you did not see any of the latest crop of Marvel movies, you will be fine. This is a stand alone series.

Basically, if enjoyed The Fifth Element, Star Wars, or other sci-fi along those lines, this will be well worth your time and money.

Incredibly witty yet scruffy with amazing style that doesn't follow any superhero formula, it is near impossible to dislike Guardians of the Galaxy. Classic soundtracks oddly fit the cosmic saga, giving it grounded and slightly nostalgic feeling. This may very well be the Star Wars of this generation.

This adventure of ragged uncommon crew has a unique light tone, almost resembling morning children cartoon or video game. The humor is spot-on, cleverly written and personalized the characters better than dull gloomy distress most fantasy movies opt for. While the dysfunctional team has its issues, they are delivered with ease, discarding any cumbersome drama and replacing them with accessible comedy.

Chris Pratt is an excellent choice for Peter Quill. He is a good example of ruffian with somewhat noble heart, and Chris Pratt hasn't been too fixed on a protagonist image. It works well since Pratt could be your usual hero, but more importantly he brings great unsuspected humor. His character serves as anchor for humanity, because even though the tale happens in gigantic other realm, Quill is often shown as mere human and this aspect will definitely resonate with the audience.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora is now green skinned. After Avatar and Star Trek it’s safe to say that she possesses the exotic alien look. As a veteran of sci-fi genre, she carries herself comfortably and quite believably as action persona. Her character is indeed a peculiar love interest for Quill, but deep down it’s more a search for companionship rather than romance. Dave Bautista as Drak hasn’t got much experience in acting yet, still this character suits him and with a compliment of good cast, he probably has the better role any pro wrestlers have had in recent time.

Groot and Rocket are both CGI. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the heart of the movie. He’s a strange mix of raccoon and mercenary, a bit broken and still eloquently funny. Vin Diesel voices Groot, ironic that most of his roles are tough guys but as a gullible and vocabulary challenged tree that he delivers his better work. Aside from these two, CGI also covers the vistas and expected laser shooting futuristic action.

Design for the setting is great, often depicting places like those in video games. The splendor of debris and explosive accompanies the movie, it’s undeniably a good spectacle and top tier for blockbuster. The director James Gunn delivers a good continuation of scenes, humorous line and constant pace. Soundtracks from classic 80s music is gold, the contrast works much better than any techno tune could possible do.

Guardians of Galaxy is a rare movie that keeps its audience fully entertained, it doesn’t let up, if fact it gets better as it progresses. It’s a heartfelt and genuine effort to connect with audience. When it ends, it gives a warm fuzzy feeling as one leaves the cinema. It is no less than an utter cinematic achievement.

The acting fell a bit flat at times but it was still another really good movie released by Marvel Studios. The group that was in the movie was a bit different as the GotG aren't that popular in the comic world. Barely anyone knew who they were at the time of the movie being announced but Marvel took a risk and it worked out very well. There was more of an emphasis on humor in this movie, which is probably why they hired a fairly well received comedian for the staring role in Chris Pratt. The humor is well done and the dynamic that is infused within the movie is really well done, especially with Rocket and Groot, who provided most of the humor the movie delivered. The movie had alot of action in it too and it bounced back and forth between the two very well. The only problem I had was with probably the most well known actor in the group and that was Zoe Saldana. She fell flat a few times here and there and I just felt like she was disinterested in what she was doing half the time on screen. It's not enough to ruin the movie but it was noticeable for me. At the end of the day though, this was a very well done movie and another good movie done by the Marvel Studios. It's the last one of the year for them and they went out with a pretty big bang. The space battle scenes put 2 of the last 3 star wars films to shame. I know CG has come a long way in a short amount of time, but you gaze at these alien civilizations and they are fully rendered and just make sense. The plot is not ultra complex, but it doesn't need to be. The characters are interesting. Even Groot, with the one phrase he can say. I thought that would get tired quick but surprisingly it doesn't.
My biggest criticism of this film is Karen Gillan's relatively small part. It would have been cool to see more with her character. More fight scenes or initiative from her.
This is not one of those films where a perfect protagonist easily saves the day. This is a film about a bunch of flawed characters making something more than they are. It is a very humorous film, but surprisingly it has heart too. And action. Lots and lots of action. It strikes a good balance. If I had to rank the marvel films from best to worst this one would easily come in top third.

ThatI read comics and manga only that published in the newspapers and weekly magazine, other than that I am not into the comic books. So I must admit that I never heard before 'Guardians of the Galaxy' till this project start to commence. That means I had no expectations, I mean the expectation was nil. Especially after seeing the trailers and teasers I was totally repelled away to see strange characters like a tree, raccoon and other colorful skin tone human like creatures. Frankly, I thought it would end up badly as 'Green Lantern' did. I discarded my negative thoughts and decided to go after all I am a movie fanatic and that's what I do. I can say all these things were in my advantage when I went to sit in the cinema hall like an empty minded. The opening credits began to roll, me too slowly started to dissolve with the movie. It was not even 5 minutes passed, but I was into it and can you believe that I forgot to have a bite the junk food I purchased. In the end, I was very impressed like never before and how much? That's what I am going to explain in the below paragraphs.

‘‘I am Groot.’’

First, I never heard this director, kind of new in town (to me). When I checked his filmography on the movie database I came to know that I loved his movie 'Super' which was just like the movie 'Defendor'. What a breakthrough he got from this movie to enter into the big director's league list. It is a dream come true. He's also going to make a sequel for this as well and that is the real test to prove he's not just lucky to get away with this movie. Because many has predicted it won't stand tall in the box office. But what I witnessed was exactly opposite. The responsibility has become so heavier.

Secondly, its a another 3M or MMM. Don't get confused, I was saying Marvel's Marvelous Magic. Other side Disney and Pixer are battling each others in animation field to dominate. In superhero themes, is there anyone to challenge Marvel? It is like one man's pride walk on the streets of Hollywood. Recently I said in the 'Need for Speed' review that EA joined something like the same, but a unique league to transform their games into the feature films. Whatever they do, it is our gain for sure. It was Marvel's sixth movie series from 'comic-to-movie' conversion, after Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, including The Avengers. Remember 'Ant-Man' is in due early next years.

A story of a boy called Peter Quill, who was taken away from his home planet, Earth by the space pirates. 20 years later he becomes a skilled thief and calls himself Star-lord. As usual in one of his missions he meets some strange guys who are after the orb he stole from an isolated planet. Soon he realizes it is a bigger issue once he come to know what does orb do. Unexpectedly a five member team forms that includes him Quill the thief, Gamora as the assassin, Drax the destroyer, Rocket the genetically engineer-cum-bounty hunter and Groot the tree. They decide to work towards one purpose, but the thing is they are mismatched in everyway. That leads each others to get misunderstand, misuse and failures, in one word to say the losers. After the series of screw-up how they unite against the strongest villain in the galaxy Ronan was told before it wraps up with a grand final fight.

Yeah, I know the story was very simple. Men after the object that gives the power and strength is what's commonly known theme nowadays. But the beautiful cast and performances, including astonishing visuals will definitely change the viewer's perspective. It is going to be a game changer for the Chris Pratt's career. Congratulations to him to made his role unbelievably awesome. Now onwards its only look forward. Like always Zoe Saldana had been excellent and sexy under the alien skin avatar. If Andy Serkis is the master of motion-capture then Zoe is kind of a female version of him. Vin Diesel had the least display of all the lead characters, especially with his one and only dialogue that repeats all the time. It was so fun for the first time watch and hope it will remain same for repeat viewings. The character Rocket was another impressive, voice rendered by Bradley Cooper. Me too, to call him a raccoon kind of feel it is a racism remark. LOL. Definitely it is one of the top in the list of non-human or graphical character in a live-shot movie appearance. I think it was one of the biggest role ever Dave Bautista did. He was equally great to all the above, I stated. The cast was really a big, only those I mentioned in the above lines were having major portions in this installment. So expecting the others' time will come in the follow-up movies.

‘‘We are the bunch of jackass
standing in the circle.’’

Like I said the story was not the problem here because it was presented with plenty of fresh humor. Don't expect it like a serious movie with a serious mission that takes place travelling all around the galaxy in a spaceship. Especially it was far better than 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to

Who would have thought that Marvel’s next highly entertaining, multi-million (hopeful billion) dollar cinematic adventure would be set in a futuristic space world, whose tonal and narrative flow is shaped around a retro-filled soundtrack withWho would have thought that Marvel’s next highly entertaining, multi-million (hopeful billion) dollar cinematic adventure would be set in a futuristic space world, whose tonal and narrative flow is shaped around a retro-filled soundtrack with songs dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s? With hits including Blue Swede’s Hooked On a Feeling, The Runaway’s Cherry Bomb, The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy is the epitome of silly, mindless fun at the movies. I’m not sure what Marvel Studios obsession with Marvin Gaye may be currently, but after having the song Trouble Man dictate the narrative for the highly impressive Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier this year, it seems that the powerhouse studio is repossessing old concepts and ideas, and polishing them up quite nicely. With a bit of frantic, highly busy visual effects as well as engrossing dark physical and illicit family comedy, and presenting them in exuberantly exciting fashion for people of all ages to enjoy, Guardians of the Galaxy is a clear-cut winner.

There is no denying that Guardians may very well be Marvel’s own Star Wars for a new generation of highly diverse and eager young filmgoers; the film, which is inspired by the classic series, also does a great job spoofing much of the universe brought to life by George Lucas in the seventies. Guardians is, in many senses of the phrase, a roller-coaster ride of a film whose intention of fun is never questioned. If ever Disney wanted to shape a theme park ride around any of their properties, Guardians would surely be their best bet–never mind Pirates.

Geek culture has officially taken over cineplexes, and for the most part, so will Chris Pratt, whose turn as Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, will surely be the clear victor at this weekend’s box office. Quill, a rambunctious outlaw whose fame as a nuisance to the galaxy is as important as his alias, leads a rag-tag group of criminal misfits to iconic hero status. Like most heroes, Quill isn’t quite sure he knows he’s a hero yet. Stealing and collecting junk from around the universe on his filthy Corvette-like spaceship he uses more like a bedroom for alien women than as a means of transport, Quill finally steals something so powerful, it threatens to destroy the world and him, forever. But unlike Indiana Jones, Quill doesn’t have to dodge booby-traps and outrun giant boulders, instead he just has to deal with an array of peculiar characters including; a crew of awful aiming mercenaries loyal to Ronan (Lee Pace) led by Korath (Djimon Hounsou), bounty hunters Rocket (a genetically modified, wise cracking racoon voiced by Bradley Cooper), a humanoid tree Groot (voice by Vin Diesel), an assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and a murderous maniac intent on vengeance Dax the Destroyer (former wrestler Dave Bautista).

Eventually, everyone involved with Quill and the orb he has stolen are imprisoned (except the bad guys of course). In prison, the five begin unlikely friendships based on trust, sacrifice and intimidation that allows them to escape prison and set a course to a buyer, The Collector (Benecio Del Toro) who will stop at nothing to have the newly stolen possession in his hands. Upon discovering Quill’s possession of the orb, Ronan gets direct orders from Thanos (Josh Brolin) to retrieve it. Led by his muscle Nebula (Karen Gillan), Ronan and his dark army go to extensive corners of the galaxy to retrieve the orb, and kill anyone in their way.

Guardians can rest assure that it is by no means a revolutionary film to defies the boundaries of the superhero narrative and the ‘stop the bad guy from destroying the world’ cliched storyline we have come to love and hate. Thankfully, the film is a practice of clever humour and nuanced physical slapstick that make its way into the superhero genre. Pratt does a star-lording job of leading a fresh group of actors to new heights in super hero comedy as well as interacting and getting the most from his voice cast.

Director James Gunn (Slither, Super) whose previous work makes no indication at all that his fit in Marvel’s world of intergalactic superheroes would work, does a surprisingly fantastic job writing and directing obscure comic book characters. Obvious losers in the comic book world, Gunn does an amazing job of making the Guardians cinematic heroes whose allure on screen, consisting of saturated visual effects and computer generated imagery, make for one of the greatest complete ensemble of the summer. So what if his overly ambitious score is distracting to viewers during intense scenes of built up drama and highly concentrated action. Gunn, has us, from the films first frames, hooked on a feeling of nostalgia and escapism that we haven’t felt for a long time.

I felt everything pieced together well with it's comedy, action, visual display all getting in to the mix and executed wonderfully. The voice acting and acting of the actors captured my attention throughout, wanting to learn and feel more for these characters. Not the best movie plot as I would have expected from any Marvel films, in especially this year's X-Men : Days of Future Past which IMO was overrated and The Amazing Spider man 2 a major bore from it's continuation but Guardians of the Galaxy takes my adulation, an enjoyable film from the minute to the last! The humor should be expected though because I mean there is a giant sentient tree named Groot and a genetically modified talking raccoon. The movie boasts a great soundtrack along with some breathtaking visuals and some well done action sequences. The cast does an outstanding job portraying this band of outlaws without needing separate films providing origin stories. The one gripe I have with this movie is the villain Ronan the Accuser, the name makes him sound very threatening yet I never felt all that threatened by his presence in the movie. Without spoiling the ending I will say Ronan needs some cultural lessons. Overall the film left me feeling extremely excited for future appearances of Peter Quill, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So we see a flashback to late 80's of a little boy in a waiting room with a Walkman listening to a mixtape from his mother who is in the next room dying from cancer. The little boy is Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) who later grows up to be the self proclaimed Star Lord , we see the boy was called into the hospital room to say goodbye to his mother she gives him a gift (which later is very important ) and offers her hand to him , but before he can take her hand she dies, he is then ushered from the room by grieving family , understandably distraught he runs from the hospital room only be abducted by a spaceship piloted by an alien Yondu (Michael Roofer) . Fast forward 30 years to the present and Peter Quill/Star Lord is free spirited wanderer, space cowboy, womanizer (think Han Solo only goofier) who surfs the galaxy looking for treasure to steal and turn for a profit, he stumbles onto an orb that is wanted by a bad guy named Ronin ( Lee Pace) who wants it's to destroy and rule worlds across the galaxy, you know the usual bad guy stuff. He makes a deal with overlord major baddie Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin) to help him destroy a planet but all Thanos wants is the rock (kinda like Kobe Bryant) , Ronan receives both of Thanos daughters Nebula (Karen Gillian) & Gamora (a sexy Zoe Saldana ) the latter who may have ulterior motives to help him retrieve the Orb , Star Lord is captured trying to steal the powerful orb which is later revealed to be extremely powerful, The rest of the G.O.G Team is Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) a psychotic bio-engineered rodent with quick wit and trigger finger , he has most of the funny lines and scenes, Draxx the destroyer (Dave Bautista) basically a simple minded brute looking for revenge for his family's murder by the hands of Ronin , Groot (Voiced by Vin Diesel) a tree/enforcer with a lot of hurt but a limited vocabulary , these reluctant Heroes when thrown in prison together band together for the greater good of alien-kind. The whole team has their moments to shine individually, but this is easily the most funny , epic , heartwarming , movie of the year I can't wait to see Guardians 2! Good job Marvel with all that character development in two hours which is not easy, neither is that epic dance off. This is the Star Wars for the 21st century. Two Geek thumbs wayyyyy up !

I am very glad I went. Hugely entertaining. Very good characters and lots of them. If there is one thing I am not too keen on is the lack of effort and originality when it comes to all these aliens. Marvel needs to do more than just color people with odd makeup. Chris Pratt is ok and likeable. Still not sure why he is considered to be anything more than average. The story is pretty sound. The humor is great. Kinda reminds me of a better The 5th Element. For a super hero movie, no one is really a super hero with super powers unless you count tree man, Groot voiced by Vin Diesel. Seriously Vin, I hope hey did not pay for much for your one line. In my opinion, Bradley Cooper steals the movie in every scene.

For sure worth your $11 or so bucks. I did not see the 3D version.

minor spoiler alert ahead it doesn't spoil major plots its very minor but if your a purist don't read on

You might be wondering if Thanos was in this movie according to rumors you heard I'm here to say YES YES HE WAS he didn't play a major role but what he did do felt just right and it will probably quench you thirst for wanting to see the mad titan and to be honest I teared up a bit when I saw him he had a presence would be the best way to describe it that you could tell he means business.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a marvel movie like no other. Most marvel movies have action with a bit of comedy; this movie is a comedy with a lot of action. The CGI is very beautiful and feels real, and casting for this movie couldn't have been better, from Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, to Vin Diesel as the giant Groot. The fights will leave you so far on the edge of your seat that the chair will be irrelevant, and the jokes will make you laugh hard and fall on the floor.

Chris Pratt shows some unexpected star power in the lead role as Peter Quill/Starlord. No one expected that he would be able to take a lead in a major film after really doing nothing but supporting roles. Bradley Cooper was hilarious as well as Rocket Racoon. Each of the heroes undergoes some significant development in the film and the losers become winners. This new Marvel installment really makes you wonder where the franchise will go from here. The main problem I had with the movie was that during the fight sequences and whenever any kind of chase sequence was involved that it was almost impossible to follow along. The camera jarred around worse then the Blair Witch movie.

The humor was decent but sometimes bordered on overly cliche. The action was well done and the movie was fun to watch. I would definitely not see this in 3-D. The 3-D effects were quite apparent on where they would be in the 2-D version and were more of a pop out at your cause everything just exploded kind of 3-D.

I would definitely recommend this movie but just don't watch it in 3-D.

(Summary - Adds Humour To Heroism. ♦ 73%)

Come on now, we all know (and pretend that we don't) that all superhero movies are alike. But we still go and see them and come out of the hall enthralled by the visual effects, stunts, 3D, et cetera. So let me not focus on the story here, but the things that entertained me.

To start with, I'm in complete awe with Chris Pratt. His brief dance performance is what kick-starts the films and continues to keep us hooked with his character, the main hero. Next, I found myself laughing and grinning all the way through 2 hours because of the large amounts of humor that this film succeeds in executing. Every single sequence is painted with a comic tint, thanks to Cooper, Bautista and others. I have no reason to blame the cast, nor the production unit.

Here in India, there were few cuts that annoyed me but I believe we were spared more than we were in The Wolf of Wall Street.

While I thought that the CGI was a tad premature at some parts, the story is narrated quite nicely. The action sequences are not much of a surprise as it showcases the futuristic gadgets and stuff. There aren't any twists that could have saved the second half from being a little itchy.

Coming to the best part: the soundtrack. The Pina Colada song never felt so good before and it was also years since I heard that. Right kind of music used at perfect times throughout the film. Vin Diesel's Groot voice needs a pat in the back.

Guardians of the Galaxy succeeds in holding the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it conveys few implications here: that tree life is so much more significant than we think. It touches topics like space and gravity and galaxies and science and stuff superficially, although stops right there when it introduces typical superhero formula of an ancient ball that has some celestial power and the heroes and the villains are behind it. Blah blah blah.

BOTTOM LINE: A typical superhero film, embezzled with good humor, great music and an unconventional character ensemble. A raccoon plays a superhero, what more do you ask?

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

The CGI in the film is astonishing with renderings of Rocket Raccoon and Groot doing the series justice. The story is cohesive and you are able to actually follow what is going on as the main characters make realistic decisions and aren't cookie cutter superheroes. "Guardians of the Galaxy" 10 Scale Rating: 7.5 (Very Good) ...

The Good: After several super serious Marvel films (with comedic elements), it was refreshing to see a lighter one. Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't take itself too seriously and is just flat out fun. The effects are fantastic, as expected, and the film is colorful and visually stunning. The characters are also well done and Gunn did a good job making you care about this band of outlaws as they come together to save the universe. Unlike the Avengers, which had several films to help you get to know the team before it existed, the characters are introduced and the team is formed in just two hours. I was dubious that they could pull it off and was pleasantly surprised that they did so and then some. Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser (the main villain in the film) was among the better Marvel villains in the MCU despite not having a slew of lines. He was dark, powerful, and intimidating. Lastly, there are plenty of Easter Eggs for comic book fans as the film was designed with audiences of all kinds in mind. Despite being set in it's own niche and far from Earth, the film ties into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe very well.

The Bad: While I enjoyed the light tone, the humor becomes a little much sometimes. The slapstick and random comedic moments can be a little off-putting and forced. The one-liners almost felt constant as well. I wasn't a fan of Micheal Rooker in the film as his character just felt like a blue-skinned Merle from Walking Dead. Lastly, I would have liked to have seen more from Karen Gillan's Nebula. I felt that she was woefully under-utilized. Maybe next time? A very good Marvel film, but not quite among the best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Arthur Maggott, the worst of the death row inmates in which the United States Army absconds to combat the Germans is a convicted rapist; a Christian deconstructionist ingrained with the haywire belief that Eve alone brought "original sin" into being; a veritable loose cannon whom Major Reisman should have recognized as being a detriment to his mercenary outfit. In the manner that The Dirty Dozen serves as a loose template for Guardians of the Galaxy, the basis for Star Wars, likewise, garners its narrative animus from a non-sci-fi antecedent: Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, another film that features sexually depraved characters, but here the lowlifes are utilized for comic relief. C3PO and R2D2, the artificially intelligent droids Luke and his uncle purchase from the Jawas are modeled after Tahei and Matashichi, the two lowly peasants who accompany Rokurota Makabe, a general, burdened with the precarious task of protecting Princess Yuki, the last remaining survivor of the Akizuki clan. The princess, undercover as a mute girl, is preyed upon by the decrepit hirelings, knowingly taking wanton advantage of a presupposed cripple who wouldn't be endowed with the means to stop a potential sexual assault by vociferous petition. So taken for granted is the unquestioned altruism of C3PO and R2D2, it can be somewhat jarring to learn that their filmic bloodlines consist of gold-starved opportunists who would participate in a woodland gang-rape had they possessed the necessary brawn and speed to catch Yuki. C3P0, the analogue for Tahei, now seems less like some gay man than a eunuch, which would account for his feminine voice and anatomically incorrect body. It's punishment; it's karma. And R2D2, owner of an extending tool-tipped appendage employed, once thought, solely for quotidian purposes; most memorably, when he fixes the Millenium Falcon's hyperdrive generator, looks more and more like a phallic symbol, giving the seemingly sexless robot the potentiality for amorous feelings towards Leia. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot, a tree, and Rocket, a raccoon, share the same binaries as C3PO and R2D2: tall/short, feminine/masculine, and most importantly, celibate by circumstance/celibate by default. Whereas the tree lacks the genitalia for intercourse, Rocket does, but is doomed to be "the other", just like R2D2, since nobody could reciprocate romantic love from an entity so singular. It's not vitriol, but disguised longing that Rocket expresses with vehemence, when the bounty hunter lobs insults at the people he sizes up through his view-finder, since the toddler, the male/female couple, and finally, Peter Quill, the terra womanizer, inhabit a spatial proximity to life he can only glimpse from afar. Unlike R2D2, the golden droid understands his limitations and tries to protect his electronic friend, advising him against having "delusions of grandeur". Later, just before R2D2 boards Luke's x-wing starfighter, en route to blowing up the death star, C3PO says, "You wouldn't want my life to get boring, would you?" It's a declaration of love, platonic or otherwise; the makings of a bizarre love triangle, a futile one, at best, when it's obvious that R2D2 is no match for Han Solo in wooing the princess, even though he's a better mechanic than Chewbacca, and yet is unfairly overlooked at the medal ceremony. Only C3PO knows what all that beeping is about, only he knows the secrets of R2D2's heart. Similarly, only Groot understands his raccoon friend. Like C3PO, he tries to save Rocket from disillusionment. At the Kyln, as a survival tactic against the prison population, Rocket asks Gamora to "work out some kind of trade," pointing out to Ronan's minion that the "bald bodies find [her] attractive," which is to say, he does too. The love, it's there. When the Rocket's prison breakout plan is expedited, once Groot removes the quarnex battery from the watchtower, he grabs a big machine gun, overcompensating for his shortcomings, and as a result, he hopes, will have the effect of impressing Gamora, whom the raccoon knows will inevitably fall for Quill. While intoxicated, after a fight with Drax, he screams, "I'll kill every last one of you," as he aims his gun at the buff widower, who calls him "vermin". Even more hurtful, he is called "rodent" by Gamora. Rocket doesn't beep and whir; he doesn't need a protocol droid to translate for him. Rocket is a psychopath. But is he dirtier than Drax, the Maggott-like misogynist who thinks Gamora is a "green whore"? Although she is only a pawn in the Kree army, he is more than willing to slit her throat, similar to how Maggott stabs to death the wife of a Nazi SS officer at the Berlin compound. No. After the Nova Corp expunges the criminal records of all the Guardians, Drax asks Corpsman Dey if removing somebody's spine is a crime. Conversely, love redeems Rocket. "We are Groot," the tree tells the raccoon; tree for "I love you." Expand

This may not be the most well constructed or well put together Marvel film in fact it might be the weakest of Phase 2 but it was the most fun I’ve had watching a Marvel movie since The Avengers, which while I didn’t think it was the best of comic book movies was entertaining, and considering how dark and brooding a lot of comic book movies are now it was nice to have something fun that was just a nice standalone film. And give Marvel credit for blowing away my skepticism and making this film about a group I’ve never heard of work. Because this film has little to no substance, it doesn’t have as much rewatch value as other Marvel films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier but as a fun summer blockbuster this movie fits the bill. If you are going in expecting nothing more than a fun summer blockbuster you’ll be entertained but if not you’ll probably disappointed. I’d say its worth one viewing. Don’t know if I’d watch this movie over and over again but for one viewing it was fun although I have no idea how you can pull off a sequel to this but we’ll see. For what this was it wasn’t the best Marvel film I’ve ever seen but it was one of the most entertaining ones I’ve seen in a while and I think for that the film should be given some credit where credit is do it did what I movie should do it entertained me. The retro soundtrack adds a layer of cool to the movie as well - instead of any hard rock, typical intense soundtrack backgrounds or EDM, we get Earth Wind & Fire, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and more. There are those moment of movie score in there, but the casette tape-style soundtrack is a tasteful addition that enhances the movie and, just like its characters, adds to the on-screen characteristics of the film. Science Fiction is my favorite genre, but I've never been a fan of superheroes, and in fact, ten years ago I would never have even considered seeing a film like Guardians of The Galaxy. On the surface, this looks like a kids movie, but thanks to some fantastic writing and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), as interesting a character as you will ever meet, Guardians of The Galaxy is Science Fiction at it's best. Quill is a thief, nothing more, nothing less. He is hired to steal something and does it the same way he's done hundreds of times before, only this time, there are a bunch of other people trying to take it from him. Quill will come to learn that the item is so very valuable because it is a nearly unstoppable weapon, that the worst men in the universe will stop at nothing to possess. Together with the other renegades, Quill decides the best thing to do is to stop these men and make sure the item is never able to be taken again. Chris Pratt stars and gives the performance of a lifetime. I remember first seeing Pratt in the show Everwood, and thinking that this guy has no personality, amazing how things have changed. Finally able to be himself, Pratt shows that his personality is larger than life itself, and twice now in his young career, he has turned that gift into two of the best characters I've seen in years. Paired with some of Hollywood's brightest young stars, an incredible team of writers, and special effects that are out of this world, Guardians of The Galaxy had all the tools it needed to become the companies biggest earner. This is a film that a lot of people are never going to think of as anything more than a comic book turned into a film for children, but it is so much more than that. From the music to the storyline, to the stars themselves, this film has something for everyone, it was my top film pick of 2014, a must see movie, and something that any true fan of cinema shouldn't miss.
