But what it does lack a little bit is some originality. I'd say it's not a bad conclusion to the original, but there could have been some better ideas. There is some quite cringy parts as well. With that said, I loved it, I'd watch it again, and it helps us forget that car crash of a remake in 2016. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a great tribute to the Ghostbusters franchise and not just chock-full of fan service, yeah, but the film itself isn't too great. The pacing sometimes feels a little weird, some characters aren't developed too well like the brother, whom I forgot the name of, (goes to show) and I think the film starts out a little bit slow. However, I still think it's good. It's got some great moments, and for what it was supposed to do and be, it did one hell of a good job. And also I did like the little bit of fan service. (coughs in Bill Murray) So it's a great movie, even if not too great. Expand

If I remember anything (anything at all) from that 2016 debacle, it was the soulless, baseline "watchability" of it -- an unfortunate hallmark of too many "triple A" releases nowadays. With Jason Reitman following in his father's footsteps though, you can very obviously track an undercurrent of respect and reverence for the original piece throughout "Afterlife." This element can sometimes persist to a bit of a fault, but the effort is mostly satisfying and even profound at times. The pacing is a bit of a challenge for me, with the cautious, slow-growing approach not really acting as something I remember the original films possessing. Seems like this was more of a Jason Reitman touch at work. All things considered, the end result is enjoyable, definitely making up for a lot of the wounds left by the 2016 reboot. Expand

It has some plot-line issues which will probably make you scratch your head a bit. It's also a little awkward in places. They don't completely master the same style of comedy they do in the original. It's a fine balance and some scenes lack the necessary suspension of disbelief that is required by the actors to fully embrace whatever it is they are acting towards or against. It's not terrible by any means, but you can kind of tell that they don't quite know how to act it out.

Some of the action sequences, as it is with modern films, goes completely overboard which always annoys the heck out of me. Less is more movie-industry! Stop it!

But despite that, there's a sweet, decently funny and quite interesting story unfolding in the movie. Apart from a couple places where it does seem to loose itself in itself a bit, I was kept entertained.

I wouldn't say it's a worthy successor to the original two movies. For that it is simply too much of the same, just in a desert environment. It is, however, a pretty decent tribute, which will make you want to re-watch the original masterpieces. Yes, both of them. I never understood why GB2 is said to be inferior. I love both of them, always have.

It lacks character build up or an original story but has plenty of heart and charm. It also has a nice 80’s family movie feel to it. It’s not a spectacular movie but it’s a nice movie.
Yet it still will probably make you wish there was more to it despite being a pretty decent return of the series. That is still at least more like the original than the 2016 movie. Even if it pretty much acts like more didn’t happen after the 1984 incident.
So some fans might not like that it didn’t only erase the 2016 movie but possibly the 1989 sequel as well. Critics who didn’t like it call it too much of a fan service which yeah can be surprisingly disappointing. It however it does still work as a heartfelt Harold Ramis tribute.
Leslie Jones called this movie a dickish move that it was made instead of a sequel to her 2016 movie. However, her movie is a dickish move since it was an unnecessary reboot that made believe the 1984 film never happened. Especially too close to when Harold Ramis just died.

Solid movie, does the series proud. I would have preferred the movie to not be so focused on the kids and there were a few cringey moments with the silly way certain scenes were handled, but it was very solid. The first two in the franchise were more serious, which is how I prefer it. This was still serious, but some scenes were trying to lean toward being funny to get a chuckle out of the audience that didn't really land at all with me, so I think an adjustment there would have brought my rating up to a 9 or a 10, but beyond those areas, the movie was certainly good enough to recommend paying to see without a doubt. Great return. Young Jason Reitman decided to continue his father's work and bring back the hunters who have long been gathering dust on the shelf, but everyone loved them just as much as they did almost 40 years ago. The plot third part of Ghostbusters turned out to be a very soft restart, to remind old viewers who the Hunters from New York were, and to bring young viewers up to date with what is happening here. Unfortunately, there is little drive in this film and there is practically no such ghost hunting, but there is a lot of pleasant nostalgia. The new characters fit perfectly into this franchise and there are all hints that there will be a next part. Expand

Focusing the story on kids works much better than the cynical part of me wants to admit, and overall tightening the story to make it more of an adventure works well. Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd are wonderful. The special effects are pretty good. The kid actors are great (except for the Stranger Things kid). Overall the film follows the trends of remake/reboot/sequels and doesn't do anything that imaginative, but it is kinda the best of the Ghostbusters franchise. Expand

Incomes Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of the director of the original, Ivan Reitman. I'll admit that Ghostbusters wasn't a huge thing in my life. I'm not a massive fan of the franchise but I have watched all the movies in the franchise. The premise is "When a single mother and her two children move to a new town, they soon discover they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind". So does this honour the ghostbuster legacy or another failure like the reboot?

One of the biggest things I appreciate about Ghostbusters: Afterlife is how it respects Harold Ramis, one of the original Ghostbusters, who sadly passed away. His character, Egon Spengler, is treated respectfully in the story. Additionally, the other 3 original Ghostbusters return as well and are handled magnificently without taking the focus away from the new characters. I also enjoy the tone in Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is more of a family drama story. It ain't the gritty humour that was in the original but it works for the story that is being told in this film and it still honours a lot of what the original did. It is also shot in a wonderful way where the shots feel more of a contrast to the original grim crowded city. The shots here feel more lifelike and colourful which elevates the tone even further. There are some genuinely heartfelt and emotional moments as well.

One worry I did have is that the new Ghostbusting crew were a group of kids. However, my worry was subverted as the cast did a great job. McKenna Grace plays Phoebe who is the main lead. She is awkward and nerdy and super interested in science. A character like that would normally be quite irritating but she isn't in this film. She does a phenomenal job in making us root for her as she is incredibly likeable. I also enjoyed the friendship she has with Podcast, which is a stupid name though. Some might find Podcast annoying but the contrast in personality with Phoebe allows for enjoyable comedic moments between the two. Another actor I loved in this movie was Paul Rudd who plays Gary, the teacher in this new town. He is hilarious and lovable in this film. Surprisingly, the action and scare scenes are great. There is a great car chase sequence that I enjoyed and the scares are quite creepy for a family adventure film.

Unfortunately, there are some issues with the plot that I did have. Phoebe has a brother, Trevor, played by Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame. I enjoy Finn's performance, but his character is just so boring. He has a plot where he gains a crush on a girl named Lucky but it is just so uninteresting compared to the main plot. It's a lame teen romance inserted into the Ghostbuster plot and I honestly wish it was removed. This film also leans on nostalgia a lot! There is a lot of easter egg and reference to previous Ghostbuster films. It's fine to do that but this movie does it to a point where it is starting to cause issues for the film. There are a lot of scenes where it is characters just walking while finding things from previous movies. It just goes on for way too long and slows the pacing. The final act is also beat for beat the same thing from the first Ghostbusters but in a different setting. It might have been done for nostalgic purposes but I feel like it would've been better if they just did something different.

Overall, Ghostbusters: Afterlife feels like a proper love letter to the fans. It treats its legacy characters with respect unlike the 2016 version and it gives a story that is a proper sequel. It contains a lot of easter eggs for the fans even though it does lean on it a bit too much. Ghostbusters: Afterlife would have been a perfect finale to the franchise but the ending does imply a potential sequel. However, the framework that this film left would certainly lead to me being interested in the sequel if it does happen.

Also watched the sequel which was fine, as well as 2016 one, which was bad. So getting a new one that doesn't take into account the last one and acts as a proper sequel+successor set in a small town in the middle of nowhere with a younger cast and being directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman who did the original, had me intrigued. After giving Ghostbusters: Afterlife a watch, it suffices to say the son did not disappoint.

The story follows a single mom with two kids who move to a small town after the passing of her father and inheriting his house and land. As the kids investigate around, they start uncovering who their grandfather was and how the strange occurrences in the locality are linked. For the most part, I enjoyed the simple straightforward tale that pays homage and respect to what came before it while incorporating its own thing in the mix. The performances were, in general, good to great with Mckenna Grace stealing the show as the smart and curious kid, she was wonderful and funnily enough, did more as a strong female lead than the entire 2016 reboot with an all-female main cast. Paul Rudd was his usual fun wholesome self and that's never a bad thing even if I wish he was in the movie a bit more. Carrie Coon… well she's Carrie Coon, I have loved her ever since The Leftovers and she always delivers.

Production wise, this was a great one. The sets, the props, the cinematography, the CGI, it all was solid especially considering it didn't have a humungous budget. The thing that surprised me was the sound effects had a strong punch and impact whether it was the equipment, the action scenes, the atmosphere etc, something I didn't expect in a movie like this to put as much care into but it did so props for that.

What did bring down the movie a tad bit was that not all of the characters were utilized efficiently. Despite having a 2-hour runtime, the script wasn't as tight as I'd hoped it would be. Also, the final act could have had a bit more to it in terms of the antagonist, maybe expand upon the lore or add something to it that is concrete since it was familiar and full of nostalgia.

All in all, considering the absolute nonsense Hollywood is up to with bringing back old franchises and running them to the ground by doing cheap and lazy cash grabs and hiring people who think they can do it a lot better than the original creators while not giving the property its due respect, it's so refreshing to see something that actually does not follow the trend. Jason Reitman I bet would have made his father proud. If you're a fan of Ghostbusters, this is a must-watch. If you are not, I'd suggest watching the original and then giving this one a try. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a 7.8/10.

People are charismatic and you take love from the beginning to the end. I was hoping that Paul Rudd would have a big role in this movie but they used his talents to make it secondary. Which is not bad but they did not know how to take advantage of their talent. The character of Finn Wolfhard is actually waiting for more participation in the plot but I think that the central axis of the film I do not know how to put adequate because it shows a little of everything. In the end it is a good movie to see with the family on a Saturday or Sunday, entertaining, jokes and references from the past. Good job to the producer and the director. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The cast are great, but it's just like a own brand Force Awakens for the Ghostbusters franchise. Lots of nostalgia and not a lot else outside of a standout performance from McKenna Grace. The big set piece at the end is a bit of an anticlimax considering it's a rehash of Ghostbusters 1 but instead of being on a skyscraper in New York with a 500ft tall marshmallow man, it's just in a field in front of an old house, and the worst part of all, and the thing that for me knocks serious marks off and leaves a horrid taste in the mouth is the ghoulish Harold Ramis force ghost. I know they had the blessing of the Ramis family but they shouldn't have asked for it, because they should've known how ghastly the reanimation of dead actors is.

The moment where a hand steadies Phoebe is enough, we know it's Egon, there's no need for anything more. Horrible. That said, there's more than enough here to generate some sequels with the solid cast and the post credits set up, just please, let the dead rest, fan service isn't a good enough reason to disturb them.

Its a shame its attached to the ghostbusters franchise as I felt some of the concepts leading up to its ending were quite interesting. The cast were excellent despite some rather odd writing choices (super intelligent child genius with an alcoholic jobless mum who spouts irreverent jokes and comments throughout the film? - a mechanic brother who fixes a car for no reason yet despite this obvious skill works in a diner because he likes a random girl he just met for 5 mins?). Despite all these odd choices it was quite watchable with some fun moments. Switch off and enjoy what's here if you're a fan of family adventure/action flics but it could've been so much more. Expand

Ultimately, it all had to stay in the family, and Jason Reitman decided to pay homage to his father's work in the two original films.

There were some risks, of course, especially as there is still a lot of noise and complaints about Paul Feig's disappointing 2016 film, but I have to say that any comparison is simply pointless and unnecessary.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a straightforward film that doesn't mess around.
It offers a simple but engaging story involving new and mostly interesting characters, who manage to hold the weight of the narrative, and although at many points it can err on the side of nostalgia and lean too heavily on the past, it manages to come across as an entertaining, funny, and surprisingly touching film.

I normally have issues with films having too much focus on nostalgia and I do have that issue here but it does it better than others. For the first two acts, the nostalgia is way too overbearing but for the final act, it feels tasteful and justified. The story and pacing here are just kind of average, they once again rely on nostalgia from the 1st film while adding more information to it to make it more interesting but the story just isn’t as memorable. The comedy here is all over the place, sometimes it’s really funny and sometimes it’s worse than Marvel humor. The music here is incredibly forgettable which is really only something you notice about a day after watching the movie but I don’t remember any single piece of music here. Jason Reitman’s direction though feels refreshing. It’s not similar to his father’s direction from the first two but it isn’t so dissimilar. The performances here are pretty good. Most of my enjoyment from this film comes from the third act and it’s a GREAT third act. All of the nostalgic beats hit perfectly and the emotion here is amazing. The third act is all spoilers but I definitely recommend checking it out for the final act alone. If you are a Ghostbusters fan, then you’ll definitely get something out of this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, it is certainly much better than the 2016 reboot. And it pays respect to the original. However, the character writing is bad and the film does not seem to understand the elements that made the original so great. To top it off, the movie takes place in BFE Oklahoma, but somehow has a diverse cast you might expect to find in San Francisco and (SPOILER) the real ghostbusters who you probably came to see barely show up for a few minutes at the end, having nothing to do with the development of the plot or story until that point. Diversity quotients above story ruin everything, but they don't totally ruin this film. It does have a heart to it and a respect and reverence for the source material. Sometimes, thin writing beats you over the head with its heart at the end and doesn't really earn it since the opening scene ends up making very little sense as the film goes on.

Mostly, the problem arises in the script and the poorly developed characters and mary-sue 12-year-old protagonist. The entire premise of Ghostbusters is humor, middle-aged cynicism, happenstance, and quirkiness. Instead, we get knowitall 12yearolds who can pretty much do anything and inexplicable (SPOILER) corporeal ghosts of Harold Ramis that are never really explained except to tug at your emotions--and they probably will by the end, to their credit. But if Egon can do pretty much anything anyway, why does it matter that he is dead? Couldn't he have just fixed everything as a ghost without anyone's help?

And, why does (SPOILER) Paul Rudd open a ghost trap when he knows exactly what would be inside of it? He is a scientist, not a total dumbass.

This is not a bad film, but it isn't a great one and probably isn't really a good one. But, at least the script isn't woke, even if the casting clearly was. They truly just need better writers and perhaps a more slap-stick director. Worth seeing because it ends up being uplifting and respectful and family-friendly without succumbing to some of the woke nonsense of 2021, but also to support seeing the ghostbusters on the screen one last time.

It's a little heavy-handed on the nostalgia and memory berries, and it continues an annoying trend right now where old IPs have sequels that are essentially the same movie as the original, just re-packaged and not as good. This film also highlights the trend where lead characters are 'Mary Sues' and are perfect from the get-go with basically no character development or learning. The young actress in the lead role did a great job, but her character was boring because of this. Expand

"Nostalgia is a powerful feeling — it can drown out anything." - Terrence Malick

And yes, I just quoted Terrence Malick in a Ghostbusters review; the years just keep getting stranger.

Anywho, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is the ‘Force Awakens’ of the franchise, something you probably all heard of by now, but not to say it isn’t true.

With all this nostalgia, all this “heeeeey, remember that from the original” with the little whimsical music cue note, which got on my nerves very quickly and that’s 60% of the whole movie, with similar plot beats from the original recycled for this movie. It was more annoying watching this with a bunch of people in cinema who responded to that “heeeeey, I do remember that from the original”.
Mckenna Grace was great thou and handled the dramatic material like a pro, especially at such a young age. Paul Rudd will always be charming no matter. And despite appearing towards the climax out of nowhere, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reunion was bittersweet, even though I question how they all know where to be at the right time during the final climax.

The rest of the characters kind of suck. Finn Wolfhard has nothing going for him in terms of his character in this movie. Nothing against Wolfhard, but I’ve got a feeling he was only cast because of popularity for ‘Stranger Things’, even when the show hasn’t been on for nearly 3 years. Carrie Coon, who plays a terrible and irresponsible mum, but her performance was good. There’s a kid named Podcast, who was supposed to be funny even though I didn’t laugh or chuckle at a single thing he said. While I have mixed feelings with the movie, but overall, I still think this is better and more respectful to the brand name than the 2016 movie. This movie has heart and there was a couple of emotional scenes. How they handle the death of Harold Ramis was another element of the movie that I was mixed on. It was a touching tribute, even if it did feel a bit off.

I’ve been a little harsh towards director Jason Reitman in the past, but despite all that it was clear his heart was in the right place.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't think I laughed once. That's a problem. It's as if Ghostbusters 2 never existed. It's as if the original Ghostbusters never existed, unless you want to wade through a TON of boring rehashing of the original, just to see the original four for the last five minutes, tops. What you see in the trailer is more or less what you get. The rest is predictable and unoriginal, lifeless, childish "humor" for just over two hours. There's little to no sophistication to this film. Tonally, it was more of a drama, which felt like a strong contrast to the previous films. Sentimental, overly nostalgic—I don’t think we needed that many references to the previous films—and very derivative of numerous film and tv tropes. Although the character interactions were good, the characters themselves felt stereotypical—we’ve seen all of these characters many times before in other movies. All of this might not matter so much if it was still a sarcastic, dry comedy where some silliness is expected. But when the tone shifts to something more sentimental, more realism is expected, and this movie does not feel real. Characters know too much information without earning it, people like and dislike each other for no reason, people make decisions for no reason other than to continue the plot. All in all, it wasn’t a bad movie, but not really a good movie either. The setups were good, but it felt like missed potential. Expand

Sadly its all that.

The Humor what little it has, just falls flat. I never laughed once. The Girl Phoebe I think her name is was alright. about the only decent character in the movie. Everyone else was pretty much meh and non memorable or annoying. Special effects are fine the story is Basically Gozer Returns round 2 but with Kids until the last 5 minutes of the movie. The first half of the movie is pretty boring and uneventful till the first ghost chase scene which even then I really didnt care all that much.

Halfway through the movie I was pretty much ready for it to be over. About the only enjoyable moment i can say I had was the last 5 minutes of the Movie because at least you got to see The OG Ghost Busters.

Like I said its not the abomination that GB 2016 was This didnt disgust and repulse me like that movie did but at the same time It wasnt what I wanted in a GB movie. We all wanted more of the OG Ghostbusters and the movie to have the feel of those movies with the Humor and outlandish situations that makes it a Ghostbusters movie. Not 5 min of the OG Ghostbusters and a bunch of her remember the staypuff marsh mellow man? Remember Gozar, Remember That twinkie? with tons of little and some extremely pointless nods to the old movie. It just amkes you want the OG Ghostbusters.

Hey I understand they are old now but it would have been nice to get some Young Ghostbusters that didnt feel dull and lifeless . Sadly looks liek they are gonna make some sequels that I have no interest in seeing if going by the end of the movie.

A mom and her 2 kids move to a remote dirt farm left by her estranged father. They soon discover remnants from the original Ghostbusters team, including the inevitable appearance of new phantoms. Director Jason Reitman (whose dad helmed the original) has cast an able young group and kept the pace moving, but the writing lacks much comic punch, the action scenes are flat and the EFX offer nothing new. Kids will probably enjoy this vanilla retelling, while dragging their parents, who will revel in the original.
NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one additional cameo, then a final moment that’s surprisingly long and rather cryptic.

A disgusting political speech: parents and teachers would be inept people capable only of making things worse, while the very young, the most recent generation, the Greta's peers would be the exclusive depositories of the hopes to save the Planet, also because they would identify the correct icons, the right idols, those who knew how to fight and defeat Evil during "Reagan years". Psychological anthropology has always maintained that qualities depend on a subjective nature completely transversal to age, but Reitman is too busy running after the audience of "Stranger Things", fiction moreover much more balanced on this point, to pay attention to such subtleties.

I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existed because when you have such a negative film that preceded it, You can only go up from there. And while Afterlife is by no means a bad movie, especially in comparison to the 2016 film or even GB2, It certainly isn't a memorable one.

The characters are underdeveloped to a fault. The mother is given no backstory at all, There is a character called Podcast because he has a podcast, and Trevor is your typical male teenage character. The story is painfully slow at times and the CGI looks dated even for a film from 2021, specifically, I'd like to point out the god-awful Walmart scene so heavily featured in the trailers.

The only two redeemable things about this movie are Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. Rudd perfectly captures the few attempts at humor in the film, which is more often missed than hit, but he is frustratingly absent in the second half. Grace is the true star of the film and really helped make it tolerable as this was very much her journey.

All in all, Fans are gonna enjoy it for the nostalgia factor but I feel over time it would be received as highly. It's tolerable but forgettable. There isn't a single stand-out moment in this film and it runs for at least a good 20 minutes too long IMO.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was goofy, with a hollow plot and nothing original to offer.

The kids were extremely cringe (A kid named Podcast? Really?). Paul Rudd and the old crew are barely in it. McKenna Grace, who people keep gushing over, may have been the cringiest thing in the entire movie

I did not laugh except when it was unintentional. For all the people saying it's hilarious. It isn't.

They recycled literally anything they could from the first movie. It was essentially a barrage of nostalgia. But at the end of the day, my biggest gripe is that this was a dumb kids movie and nothing like the first one. It's totally different in tone. My Ghostbusters doesn't have any teen drama in it. How did we go from 4 grown men running a Ghostbusting business to teen drama with some ghostbusting on the side?

I wish I never saw this movie. I put this one BARELY above the 2016 movie. And I hate that movie.

At least the originals still exist. I recommend watching 1 and 2 and skipping this nostalgia bait garbage.

It's basically the same movie rehashed. Marsh mellow men make a return, for no logical reason whatsoever. There are even some shots that are exactly the same, like the dog smashing through a buildings entrance and skidding to the side. Sure, it feels like an 80's film and his has that Spielberg thing going on, but under all the surface level stuff it's hollow. Why can Spengler walk around as a ghost, move stuff, stroke peoples faces? sentimentality takes precedence over believability. He even cries! a ghost, crying? This movie is worse than the last train wreck even. at least that film tried to be original. At the end the three originals turn up, their presence merely shoe horned in there for fan service. In fact by turning up and helping they negate the struggle of the protagonist. Spengler even has to steady his granddaughters beam as a ghost. Talk about hand holding. Expand

The film viewer is immersed in an immersive film experience and he becomes aware of the added value of reality, so that he is happy to be far away from the Hollywood fantasy hell, which clearly explains to him with what is shown, thanks for buying the cinema ticket, we wanted more not at all. By the way, on the subject of tension. The whole story is an uncomfortable copy of the first Ghostbuster with annoying children, bad direction and a bad script. To then take up the question of why again ... Expand

This is sad… all i can say. No arc in any of the characters, same villain at the end. And disturbing cgi of the late Harold Ramis felt almost disrespectful

Exciting and fresh plot, new characters, props and everything. Fresh take absolutely. Oh cr*p that was blank screen and not Ghostbusters Afterlife, that's actually opposite of my review. Absolute copy of the plot of the first movie, same props and everything. Only that actors are now kids. 4 kids, 2 teen romances, two adults one romance. Would say that this movie is one of the worst movies for few years. Though there was that Willy's wonderland movie Expand

I loved Ghostbusters. This remake was so boring and juvenile that I walked out after an hour. Just awful as there's nothing charming to like about this terrible mess. Avoid at all costs unless you're under twelve years old.

I had to stop it and read reviews because surely the movie I thought this was and the movie it is are the same right? Wrong! This is Ghostbusters for kids, with a bad plot and unremarkable acting. Totally woke film featuring all the girl power and forced diversity it could muster. It's not even funny. If you can watch it for free then do so if not,. Don't bother Expand

I would call this movie Ghostbusters Uneventful and nothing really happens when you think finally you will get something you end up with reheated version of Ghostbusters 1984. Waste of time

Appalling film, and I say this as a devout Ghostbusters fan. Utterly hollow, ineptly scripted and plotted, cynically motivated and tonally all over the place. Utterly hollow, ineptly scripted and plotted, cynically motivated and tonally all over the place. There is no life in this movie, it's just an empty series of 'hey remember this?' moments with insincere and ham-fisted mawkishness layered on top. Jason Reitman was NOT the right choice for this at all. Another disappointing Ghostbusters misfire. All the manbabies bleating about how good this is have zero sense of what ghostbusters is. No scares, no laughs, no irreverence, no invention... just nothing. Expand
