Obviously nothing can replicate the original but this took me back to when I was 8 years old when I desperately wanted to be a Ghostbuster. And, now I still do. Absolutely love it.

Without giving too much away, a couple of extremely touching scenes in this film and the actors must have had a great time making this. I want more!!

Tonally, it was more of a drama, which felt like a strong contrast to the previous films. Sentimental, overly nostalgic—I don’t think we needed that many references to the previous films—and very derivative of numerous film and tv tropes. Although the character interactions were good, the characters themselves felt stereotypical—we’ve seen all of these characters many times before in other movies. All of this might not matter so much if it was still a sarcastic, dry comedy where some silliness is expected. But when the tone shifts to something more sentimental, more realism is expected, and this movie does not feel real. Characters know too much information without earning it, people like and dislike each other for no reason, people make decisions for no reason other than to continue the plot. All in all, it wasn’t a bad movie, but not really a good movie either. The setups were good, but it felt like missed potential. Expand

I was not looking forward to that movie, but I was somewhat looking forward to Ghostbusters: Afterlife; and after seeing the film, I am left disappointed. Afterlife is poorly written, very poorly paced, has a heavily circumstantial plot, has some really off character decisions, and is mostly just soulless. Besides the film starting off strong, being well shot, and having some nice callbacks, it was just a mess in my eyes. If you liked or loved it, that's great; but I can not recommend it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't think I laughed once. That's a problem. It's as if Ghostbusters 2 never existed. It's as if the original Ghostbusters never existed, unless you want to wade through a TON of boring rehashing of the original, just to see the original four for the last five minutes, tops. What you see in the trailer is more or less what you get. The rest is predictable and unoriginal, lifeless, childish "humor" for just over two hours. There's little to no sophistication to this film. A mom and her 2 kids move to a remote dirt farm left by her estranged father. They soon discover remnants from the original Ghostbusters team, including the inevitable appearance of new phantoms. Director Jason Reitman (whose dad helmed the original) has cast an able young group and kept the pace moving, but the writing lacks much comic punch, the action scenes are flat and the EFX offer nothing new. Kids will probably enjoy this vanilla retelling, while dragging their parents, who will revel in the original.
NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one additional cameo, then a final moment that’s surprisingly long and rather cryptic.

Fans will like it, but casual filmgoers will be confused and/or bored. There’s a difference between Easter eggs and ignoring plot simply to include fan service. Better than 2016, but that’s not saying much.

The movie entertained enough, that I don't have regrets, but it wasn't a memorable experience. Expand

Ultimately, it all had to stay in the family, and Jason Reitman decided to pay homage to his father's work in the two original films.

There were some risks, of course, especially as there is still a lot of noise and complaints about Paul Feig's disappointing 2016 film, but I have to say that any comparison is simply pointless and unnecessary.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a straightforward film that doesn't mess around.
It offers a simple but engaging story involving new and mostly interesting characters, who manage to hold the weight of the narrative, and although at many points it can err on the side of nostalgia and lean too heavily on the past, it manages to come across as an entertaining, funny, and surprisingly touching film.

The movie started out so well.
But eventually it was caught up by so many movie cliche´s that my eyes got sticky.
The Kids seems like they have a MIT Degree top of the class. And yet they live poorly in the suburbs.

I normally have issues with films having too much focus on nostalgia and I do have that issue here but it does it better than others. For the first two acts, the nostalgia is way too overbearing but for the final act, it feels tasteful and justified. The story and pacing here are just kind of average, they once again rely on nostalgia from the 1st film while adding more information to it to make it more interesting but the story just isn’t as memorable. The comedy here is all over the place, sometimes it’s really funny and sometimes it’s worse than Marvel humor. The music here is incredibly forgettable which is really only something you notice about a day after watching the movie but I don’t remember any single piece of music here. Jason Reitman’s direction though feels refreshing. It’s not similar to his father’s direction from the first two but it isn’t so dissimilar. The performances here are pretty good. Most of my enjoyment from this film comes from the third act and it’s a GREAT third act. All of the nostalgic beats hit perfectly and the emotion here is amazing. The third act is all spoilers but I definitely recommend checking it out for the final act alone. If you are a Ghostbusters fan, then you’ll definitely get something out of this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, it is certainly much better than the 2016 reboot. And it pays respect to the original. However, the character writing is bad and the film does not seem to understand the elements that made the original so great. To top it off, the movie takes place in BFE Oklahoma, but somehow has a diverse cast you might expect to find in San Francisco and (SPOILER) the real ghostbusters who you probably came to see barely show up for a few minutes at the end, having nothing to do with the development of the plot or story until that point. Diversity quotients above story ruin everything, but they don't totally ruin this film. It does have a heart to it and a respect and reverence for the source material. Sometimes, thin writing beats you over the head with its heart at the end and doesn't really earn it since the opening scene ends up making very little sense as the film goes on.

Mostly, the problem arises in the script and the poorly developed characters and mary-sue 12-year-old protagonist. The entire premise of Ghostbusters is humor, middle-aged cynicism, happenstance, and quirkiness. Instead, we get knowitall 12yearolds who can pretty much do anything and inexplicable (SPOILER) corporeal ghosts of Harold Ramis that are never really explained except to tug at your emotions--and they probably will by the end, to their credit. But if Egon can do pretty much anything anyway, why does it matter that he is dead? Couldn't he have just fixed everything as a ghost without anyone's help?

And, why does (SPOILER) Paul Rudd open a ghost trap when he knows exactly what would be inside of it? He is a scientist, not a total dumbass.

This is not a bad film, but it isn't a great one and probably isn't really a good one. But, at least the script isn't woke, even if the casting clearly was. They truly just need better writers and perhaps a more slap-stick director. Worth seeing because it ends up being uplifting and respectful and family-friendly without succumbing to some of the woke nonsense of 2021, but also to support seeing the ghostbusters on the screen one last time.

But every thing I thought this movie was going to be , sadly it was. Its a GB kids movie that feels nothing like the original 2 GB movies but tosses tons of "Hey remember this from the good GB movies" and what I also really didnt want was the original GB showing up at the last 5 minutes and basically just making a Cameo. Sadly its all that.

The Humor what little it has, just falls flat. I never laughed once. The Girl Phoebe I think her name is was alright. about the only decent character in the movie. Everyone else was pretty much meh and non memorable or annoying. Special effects are fine the story is Basically Gozer Returns round 2 but with Kids until the last 5 minutes of the movie. The first half of the movie is pretty boring and uneventful till the first ghost chase scene which even then I really didnt care all that much.

Halfway through the movie I was pretty much ready for it to be over. About the only enjoyable moment i can say I had was the last 5 minutes of the Movie because at least you got to see The OG Ghost Busters.

Like I said its not the abomination that GB 2016 was This didnt disgust and repulse me like that movie did but at the same time It wasnt what I wanted in a GB movie. We all wanted more of the OG Ghostbusters and the movie to have the feel of those movies with the Humor and outlandish situations that makes it a Ghostbusters movie. Not 5 min of the OG Ghostbusters and a bunch of her remember the staypuff marsh mellow man? Remember Gozar, Remember That twinkie? with tons of little and some extremely pointless nods to the old movie. It just amkes you want the OG Ghostbusters.

Hey I understand they are old now but it would have been nice to get some Young Ghostbusters that didnt feel dull and lifeless . Sadly looks liek they are gonna make some sequels that I have no interest in seeing if going by the end of the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The cast are great, but it's just like a own brand Force Awakens for the Ghostbusters franchise. Lots of nostalgia and not a lot else outside of a standout performance from McKenna Grace. The big set piece at the end is a bit of an anticlimax considering it's a rehash of Ghostbusters 1 but instead of being on a skyscraper in New York with a 500ft tall marshmallow man, it's just in a field in front of an old house, and the worst part of all, and the thing that for me knocks serious marks off and leaves a horrid taste in the mouth is the ghoulish Harold Ramis force ghost. I know they had the blessing of the Ramis family but they shouldn't have asked for it, because they should've known how ghastly the reanimation of dead actors is.

The moment where a hand steadies Phoebe is enough, we know it's Egon, there's no need for anything more. Horrible. That said, there's more than enough here to generate some sequels with the solid cast and the post credits set up, just please, let the dead rest, fan service isn't a good enough reason to disturb them.

Its a shame its attached to the ghostbusters franchise as I felt some of the concepts leading up to its ending were quite interesting. The cast were excellent despite some rather odd writing choices (super intelligent child genius with an alcoholic jobless mum who spouts irreverent jokes and comments throughout the film? - a mechanic brother who fixes a car for no reason yet despite this obvious skill works in a diner because he likes a random girl he just met for 5 mins?). Despite all these odd choices it was quite watchable with some fun moments. Switch off and enjoy what's here if you're a fan of family adventure/action flics but it could've been so much more. Expand

"Nostalgia is a powerful feeling — it can drown out anything." - Terrence Malick

And yes, I just quoted Terrence Malick in a Ghostbusters review; the years just keep getting stranger.

Anywho, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is the ‘Force Awakens’ of the franchise, something you probably all heard of by now, but not to say it isn’t true.

With all this nostalgia, all this “heeeeey, remember that from the original” with the little whimsical music cue note, which got on my nerves very quickly and that’s 60% of the whole movie, with similar plot beats from the original recycled for this movie. It was more annoying watching this with a bunch of people in cinema who responded to that “heeeeey, I do remember that from the original”.
Mckenna Grace was great thou and handled the dramatic material like a pro, especially at such a young age. Paul Rudd will always be charming no matter. And despite appearing towards the climax out of nowhere, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reunion was bittersweet, even though I question how they all know where to be at the right time during the final climax.

The rest of the characters kind of suck. Finn Wolfhard has nothing going for him in terms of his character in this movie. Nothing against Wolfhard, but I’ve got a feeling he was only cast because of popularity for ‘Stranger Things’, even when the show hasn’t been on for nearly 3 years. Carrie Coon, who plays a terrible and irresponsible mum, but her performance was good. There’s a kid named Podcast, who was supposed to be funny even though I didn’t laugh or chuckle at a single thing he said. While I have mixed feelings with the movie, but overall, I still think this is better and more respectful to the brand name than the 2016 movie. This movie has heart and there was a couple of emotional scenes. How they handle the death of Harold Ramis was another element of the movie that I was mixed on. It was a touching tribute, even if it did feel a bit off.

I’ve been a little harsh towards director Jason Reitman in the past, but despite all that it was clear his heart was in the right place.

A disgusting political speech: parents and teachers would be inept people capable only of making things worse, while the very young, the most recent generation, the Greta's peers would be the exclusive depositories of the hopes to save the Planet, also because they would identify the correct icons, the right idols, those who knew how to fight and defeat Evil during "Reagan years". Psychological anthropology has always maintained that qualities depend on a subjective nature completely transversal to age, but Reitman is too busy running after the audience of "Stranger Things", fiction moreover much more balanced on this point, to pay attention to such subtleties.

It's a little heavy-handed on the nostalgia and memory berries, and it continues an annoying trend right now where old IPs have sequels that are essentially the same movie as the original, just re-packaged and not as good. This film also highlights the trend where lead characters are 'Mary Sues' and are perfect from the get-go with basically no character development or learning. The young actress in the lead role did a great job, but her character was boring because of this. Expand
