Afterlife is the kind of movie that leans heavily into the nostalgia factor and does little to really open the door to the next stage of adventures. I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existed because when you have such a negative film that preceded it, You can only go up from there. And while Afterlife is by no means a bad movie, especially in comparison to the 2016 film or even GB2, It certainly isn't a memorable one.

The characters are underdeveloped to a fault. The mother is given no backstory at all, There is a character called Podcast because he has a podcast, and Trevor is your typical male teenage character. The story is painfully slow at times and the CGI looks dated even for a film from 2021, specifically, I'd like to point out the god-awful Walmart scene so heavily featured in the trailers.

The only two redeemable things about this movie are Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. Rudd perfectly captures the few attempts at humor in the film, which is more often missed than hit, but he is frustratingly absent in the second half. Grace is the true star of the film and really helped make it tolerable as this was very much her journey.

All in all, Fans are gonna enjoy it for the nostalgia factor but I feel over time it would be received as highly. It's tolerable but forgettable. There isn't a single stand-out moment in this film and it runs for at least a good 20 minutes too long IMO.

The big question hovers over the rest, why do they do it that way? GB: Legacy is like Paw Patrol and only the music and effects prevent you from falling asleep. Phoebe the child prodigy (who is not even disliked by her classmates), Trevor the driver, the Goonie podcast, Lucky for the quota. They are joined by Calie the looser, Grooberson the Ash of Darkness. The setting is not a city or a big city. You have come up with something very special. a lifeless small town province, with its cgi factory halls, cgi fields and cgi mountains, which are so artistically designed that every still life is bursting with tension. Where does a film take place when the makers have no ideas and are afraid of people? Right here, in the small town film set and the gravel square behind it with the blue screen. The film viewer is immersed in an immersive film experience and he becomes aware of the added value of reality, so that he is happy to be far away from the Hollywood fantasy hell, which clearly explains to him with what is shown, thanks for buying the cinema ticket, we wanted more not at all. By the way, on the subject of tension. The whole story is an uncomfortable copy of the first Ghostbuster with annoying children, bad direction and a bad script. To then take up the question of why again ... Expand

Absolute copy of the plot of the first movie, same props and everything. Only that actors are now kids. 4 kids, 2 teen romances, two adults one romance. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie seeks to be a soft reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise basically ignoring GB2 and pretending GB2016 doesn't exist.

It works well enough in the beginning and I thought it was gonna be a solid 6/10 movie, but then the second half and especially the end ruin the movie.

I mean The CGI Ghost of Egon coming is so stupid. Also the 3 OG busters coming is dumb as well

Not as bad as 2016, but I don't recommend it.

Utterly hollow, ineptly scripted and plotted, cynically motivated and tonally all over the place. There is no life in this movie, it's just an empty series of 'hey remember this?' moments with insincere and ham-fisted mawkishness layered on top. Jason Reitman was NOT the right choice for this at all. Another disappointing Ghostbusters misfire. All the manbabies bleating about how good this is have zero sense of what ghostbusters is. No scares, no laughs, no irreverence, no invention... just nothing. Expand

I loved Ghostbusters. This remake was so boring and juvenile that I walked out after an hour. Just awful as there's nothing charming to like about this terrible mess. Avoid at all costs unless you're under twelve years old.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was goofy, with a hollow plot and nothing original to offer.

The kids were extremely cringe (A kid named Podcast? Really?). Paul Rudd and the old crew are barely in it. McKenna Grace, who people keep gushing over, may have been the cringiest thing in the entire movie

I did not laugh except when it was unintentional. For all the people saying it's hilarious. It isn't.

They recycled literally anything they could from the first movie. It was essentially a barrage of nostalgia. But at the end of the day, my biggest gripe is that this was a dumb kids movie and nothing like the first one. It's totally different in tone. My Ghostbusters doesn't have any teen drama in it. How did we go from 4 grown men running a Ghostbusting business to teen drama with some ghostbusting on the side?

I wish I never saw this movie. I put this one BARELY above the 2016 movie. And I hate that movie.

At least the originals still exist. I recommend watching 1 and 2 and skipping this nostalgia bait garbage.

This is sad… all i can say. No arc in any of the characters, same villain at the end. And disturbing cgi of the late Harold Ramis felt almost disrespectful

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely agree with most of the critics on this one. Pale mimic of the first Ghostbusters and an attempt to make the franchise into a dramatic comedy with kids at the center of the story; absolutely nothing to do with the feel and humor of the first two movies. I miss Harold Ramis and his presence as Egon, but this bordered on distasteful. What's the point of bringing back original cast when they are pretty much only making cameos? Especially in the credits??? Could have been so much better and bigger... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. so much about this film is lazy or just doesn't make sense. The characters are shallow and its so unoriginal it's untrue. It's basically the same movie rehashed. Marsh mellow men make a return, for no logical reason whatsoever. There are even some shots that are exactly the same, like the dog smashing through a buildings entrance and skidding to the side. Sure, it feels like an 80's film and his has that Spielberg thing going on, but under all the surface level stuff it's hollow. Why can Spengler walk around as a ghost, move stuff, stroke peoples faces? sentimentality takes precedence over believability. He even cries! a ghost, crying? This movie is worse than the last train wreck even. at least that film tried to be original. At the end the three originals turn up, their presence merely shoe horned in there for fan service. In fact by turning up and helping they negate the struggle of the protagonist. Spengler even has to steady his granddaughters beam as a ghost. Talk about hand holding. Expand

Jason Reitman is a middling director and it shows in this tepid sequel that took 38-yrs to happen! The light-show action doesn't happen in earnest till the final half hour and it's just wholly implausible, especially with most of the original Ghostbusters just appearing from nowhere, just poorly planned and implemented/executed.
