As someone who grew up in the 1980s, Ghostbusters had a big influence on my life, it was an all-time great film, and I have been putting off watching Ghostbusters Afterlife, because I didn't want to be disappointed. The all-female lead rebootAs someone who grew up in the 1980s, Ghostbusters had a big influence on my life, it was an all-time great film, and I have been putting off watching Ghostbusters Afterlife, because I didn't want to be disappointed. The all-female lead reboot that was released in 2016 was awful, one of the worst things to ever happen in film. Of course, the media was desperate for it to be a success and when it flopped massively, they blamed everything expect that the fact the film was terrible. It must be racists who refused to go see it as there was a black woman in it, completely forgetting the character of Winston Zeddemore from Ghostbusters 2, a much-loved character in the franchise. Then they said it must be because it was all female lead parts, so it must be those horrible misogynists who refused to go see it, again totally forgetting the lovefest we all had with Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett in the original films. History has now largely forgotten that terrible reboot, in the same way it has forgotten some of the Terminator films after the third film.

So, with all that said, I had major reservations about Ghostbusters Afterlife, I didn't really just want a rehash of old jokes with the original cast, as that would come across as desperate, I also didn't want to see the original cast replaced by some woke wet dream of the Hollywood elite, luckily, they did something very clever, they looked at the success of Stranger Things and realised that you could have young kids with older teenagers, and throw in a bit of nostalgia, a few easter eggs, and create a brand new film, that is part of the canon, and doesn't destroy the legacy at all.

The basic story of Afterlife is a single mom and her two kids move to a small town, they soon find out that their recently deceased grandfather was one of the original Ghostbusters, and as they explore the house he left for them, they start to realise that there was a secret legacy he left behind.

I don't want to spoil things, but it is no secret that Harold Ramis who played Dr. Egon Spengler died in 2014, and I will say that this film pays a really nice tribute to him and his memory. I will say no more than that.

The film is really slick, way slicker than the original films, as I mentioned earlier, it reminded me of Stranger Things, and that is a good thing.

As a true third film in the franchise, it hit on everything I wanted just about right, it didn't spoil things, and I would like to think new fans and fans of the original will leave happy. You had a strong female lead, you had a black character, and still the film has done really well considering the whole real world is falling apart thing. So, I guess those silly far left critics really didn't know what they were talking about.

The Good
A really well-made sequel, that furthers the storylines of all the original characters, as well as allowing the potential of more films. I loved the incidental music that instantly took me back to the original films.

The Bad
Since the original films were about 1h45 and this is 2h04, I feel like it didn't need to be that long, but I never felt like it was dragging either. My only real complaint was the lack of a big song in the film. The original had the Ghostbusters song, the sequel had Higher and Higher, when the Statue of Liberty came to life. Overall
As a true fan of the original, I was so happy that this film was decent. Some great moments, plenty of Easter Eggs, and a lovely ending.
I score Ghostbusters Afterlife a strong 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie seeks to be a soft reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise basically ignoring GB2 and pretending GB2016 doesn't exist.

It works well enough in the beginning and I thought it was gonna be a solid 6/10 movie, but then the second half and especially the end ruin the movie.

I mean The CGI Ghost of Egon coming is so stupid. Also the 3 OG busters coming is dumb as well

Not as bad as 2016, but I don't recommend it.

All of theOnly in attendance because my employers provided me, my family, and girlfriend with free tickets as part of an event to bring the company together outside of the workplace, I was unsure of what to expect going into this. All of the pre-release buzz made it clear even to somebody like me who didn't really follow it that this was made in an effort to restore the franchise to its former glory in the eyes of the fans who were angered by Paul Feig's admittedly mediocre 2016 reboot and provide a worthy continuation/successor to the original film they loved. An original film that at the time of this writing I still haven't seen yet.

Because of my lack of prior exposure to the iconic '80s continuity I'm sure I missed a very big portion of what this movie was doing. I was also largely lost when it came to the plot and villain as the narrative is constantly referencing and forming connections to events I never witnessed. Perhaps this should have been called Ghostbusters: New Life though as despite my unaffiliated perspective its standalone content proved enough to thoroughly entertain me. I would gladly return for a sequel to spend more time with these characters portrayed by the likes of two of the biggest child stars currently working, the always charming Paul Rudd, and the extremely underrated actress Carrie Coon. That's because Jason Reitman manges to avoid pulling a J.J. Abrams by never leaning so hard into nostalgia pandering that the past outshines Afterlife's present or potential future.

Things play out exactly as you would expect them to with the cast stumbling onto the relics left behind by the old heroes before eventually taking up their fight against a returning force of evil. It works though because even in the face of all the homages and callbacks it's still THEIR story. The young protagonists carry the action entirely on their own. Yes, we do get appearances from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, but it occurs at the tail end of the running time to ensure that their presence never overshadows that of their successors. So all of the laughs, heartwarming moments, and exhilarating thrills come directly from the next generation of 'busters as opposed to the previous.

Of course, nailing the torch passing element wouldn't have mattered if the adventure built around it wasn't any good. There are certainly some questionable aspects like the irritating loud shrieking noise that plays whenever the film tries to scare you or how nobody seems the slightest bit surprised when supernatural stuff starts occuring. Other than that though it's a hilarious blockbuster with a strong horror side (which I loved) that stars an instantly endearing group of eclectic oddballs that I can't wait to see again should this get the follow-up it deserves. I may not have been the target audience here due to coming in almost completely uninformed on the franchise outside of its lowest point, but that didn't stop me from having some of the most unexpected fun I've had all year. So while it was unable to charm me with its faithfulness to the tone, nature, and style of its predecessors the way it would a longtime member of the series' fanbase, it did manage to turn me into a new devotee.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, it is certainly much better than the 2016 reboot. And it pays respect to the original. However, the character writing is bad and the film does not seem to understand the elements that made the original so great. To top it off, the movie takes place in BFE Oklahoma, but somehow has a diverse cast you might expect to find in San Francisco and (SPOILER) the real ghostbusters who you probably came to see barely show up for a few minutes at the end, having nothing to do with the development of the plot or story until that point. Diversity quotients above story ruin everything, but they don't totally ruin this film. It does have a heart to it and a respect and reverence for the source material. Sometimes, thin writing beats you over the head with its heart at the end and doesn't really earn it since the opening scene ends up making very little sense as the film goes on.

Mostly, the problem arises in the script and the poorly developed characters and mary-sue 12-year-old protagonist. The entire premise of Ghostbusters is humor, middle-aged cynicism, happenstance, and quirkiness. Instead, we get knowitall 12yearolds who can pretty much do anything and inexplicable (SPOILER) corporeal ghosts of Harold Ramis that are never really explained except to tug at your emotions--and they probably will by the end, to their credit. But if Egon can do pretty much anything anyway, why does it matter that he is dead? Couldn't he have just fixed everything as a ghost without anyone's help?

And, why does (SPOILER) Paul Rudd open a ghost trap when he knows exactly what would be inside of it? He is a scientist, not a total dumbass.

This is not a bad film, but it isn't a great one and probably isn't really a good one. But, at least the script isn't woke, even if the casting clearly was. They truly just need better writers and perhaps a more slap-stick director. Worth seeing because it ends up being uplifting and respectful and family-friendly without succumbing to some of the woke nonsense of 2021, but also to support seeing the ghostbusters on the screen one last time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was great; my favorite Ghostbusters movie since the original. The visual effects were exceptional; some of the best I've seen in awhile especially the terror dogs and the mini stay-puff marshmallow ghosts. Mckenna Grace's performance was superb also Logan Kim, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Annie Potts, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Celeste O'Connor, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Olivia Wilde gave pretty great performances too. The writing especially the screenplay was excellent; the dialogue was really funny loved the jokes that were written for the character Phoebe that her character comes up with. The makeup, hairstyling, and costumes were terrific especially on Mckenna Grace. Also the music was great. Expand

If I remember anything (anything at all) from that 2016 debacle, it was the soulless, baseline "watchability" of it -- an unfortunate hallmark of too many "triple A" releases nowadays. With Jason Reitman following in his father's footsteps though, you can very obviously track an undercurrent of respect and reverence for the original piece throughout "Afterlife." This element can sometimes persist to a bit of a fault, but the effort is mostly satisfying and even profound at times. The pacing is a bit of a challenge for me, with the cautious, slow-growing approach not really acting as something I remember the original films possessing. Seems like this was more of a Jason Reitman touch at work. All things considered, the end result is enjoyable, definitely making up for a lot of the wounds left by the 2016 reboot. Expand

Is Ghostbusters Afterlife a perfect film? NO.

Does it stand on its own without relying on nostalgia and the strength of the original?

Also no.

But you know what? It didn't have to. Ghostbusters Afterlife was exactly what it needed to be.. a loving homage to a beloved film series and a touching family film with just a hint of the subtle "horro" the original brought to the table. There were parts that made me jump.. parts that made me laugh.. and, most importantly for this film, parts that made me cry. I don't admit this lightly, the end of this film hit me hard and I loved it!

I understand some folks being put off by the reluance on nostalgia and rehashed story beats... but I DON'T CARE! As a fan who saw the originals in the theaters as a kid, and taking my children to see this one now... when so many terrible and half-hearted sequels have been shoved out 9ver the last decade...... this was precisely what I wanted and I can not stress enough how much I appreciate everyone involved in this movie for bringing so much passion and respect to a franchise that so important to me.

Very few movies over the last 10 or so years have really hit me emotionally. But this one delivered a gut-punch in the best possible way.

My kids and I really liked this film, it takes a little while to get going and establish the new characters and family but has some nice humour, callbacks to the original movie, and signposting whats to come to keep it entertaining. The story builds nicely and the 3rd act is brilliant. This is the way a sequel should be done and handed over to a younger generation.

The special effects were well done, particulary the scenes with the Ectomobile. I thought the cast did a great job and the grandkids acting was really well done. I could certainly watch them in another GB movie, and my daughters also liked it and are interested in watching the original.

I thought this movie had a lot of charm and respect for the original film, unlike the awful 2016 travesty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting to be touched by this movie, cinema for the last few years has been lacking. So my expectations were low, especially in regards to the 2016 film as films appeared to only be about content less content. In contract, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was fun, wholesome, original and uplifting. It was refreshing to go to a theater, pay a bunch of money, and actually being entertained. It was almost shocking how good this film was.
After seeing the character development, especially that of Phoebe Spengler (McKenna Grace), playing a character who is someone who is not neuro typical, brought me to tears. My daughter was recently diagnosed as not Neuro typical. So when I saw Phoebe's character develop into a thriving, confident, butt-kicking character, it really touched me. Thank you for writing this, and for McKenna Grace portraying this character. Keep it up.

Good sequel (and not a reboot) of a beloved franchise, nostalgic....you'll feel old waching this and it give you emotions.
It mix well things for new the generations and old fans alike; a rare quality in a late sequel.
The only things off balance maybe are:
a) The typical teens movie stereotype "child-prodigy-that-can-do-anything" that is a little abused.
b) A teen-love backstory that is a little shallow (for an adult viewer at least).
c) It has less humor and less "scary stuff" than the first two films (1986 and 89).
But it is not a big deal, it's a good movie
It delivers....Ghostbusters was missed for a long time.
It is very recommended that you watch the fisrt one to undersand all the references.
I hope in Ghostbusters 4.
Beware there are 2 post credit scene...the second is the best one!

I loved Ghostbusters. This remake was so boring and juvenile that I walked out after an hour. Just awful as there's nothing charming to like about this terrible mess. Avoid at all costs unless you're under twelve years old.

I thought it was going to be woke garbage like they've been doing to movies and shows lately, especially remakes, but I was pleasantly wrong. The nostalgia made me so happy, but it didn't just rely on that, even though it technically had to. It successfully attempted to make its own story that held itself up without the ghostbuster crutch. Favourite scene was when the little marshmallow men were wreaking havoc. OMG, it was so funny and they were so cute! I loved Paul Rudd in this. He played his role very well. I also liked most of the actors. Podcast was one of the biggest highlights. SO funny! Now, here are some things I didn't like: I wasn't a big fan of Phoebe. She sort of eventually grew on me, but she was quite obnoxious. She seemed way too rude for my liking, but she didn't ruin the movie or anything. It was still enjoyable. I also didn't like how there weren't many different types of ghosts. They had some big scenes of nostalgic ones, but others were shown very quickly as if they were trying to rush the 3rd act to end it. I don't know if they're making a 2nd film, I don't think they necessarily should, even though I wouldn't be mad if they did, but there were very few ghosts in this. I also wished all the kids were teens, like Phoebe and Podcast, but again it didn't ruin the movie. Overall, I enjoyed it and I would definitely come back and rewatch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a fantastic movie that captured the spirit of the original movie while still being able to find its own way. The actors and actresses in this movie bring a new energy into the franchise, and a perspective that I think lacked in the original. While some might scoff at the idea of not having Bill make puns every five seconds, the humor in this is no less entertaining for those who can put the gatekeeping aside. It is filled with plenty of call backs that will establish itself as a knowledgeable successor to a beloved franchise. Expand

The sequel we’ve waited 32 years for! The 2016 movie was an excellent “alternate reality” version, but it’s problem was it was a reboot for a franchise that really begged for a sequel instead. This movie is what fans expected in 2016.

I normally have issues with films having too much focus on nostalgia and I do have that issue here but it does it better than others. For the first two acts, the nostalgia is way too overbearing but for the final act, it feels tasteful and justified. The story and pacing here are just kind of average, they once again rely on nostalgia from the 1st film while adding more information to it to make it more interesting but the story just isn’t as memorable. The comedy here is all over the place, sometimes it’s really funny and sometimes it’s worse than Marvel humor. The music here is incredibly forgettable which is really only something you notice about a day after watching the movie but I don’t remember any single piece of music here. Jason Reitman’s direction though feels refreshing. It’s not similar to his father’s direction from the first two but it isn’t so dissimilar. The performances here are pretty good. Most of my enjoyment from this film comes from the third act and it’s a GREAT third act. All of the nostalgic beats hit perfectly and the emotion here is amazing. The third act is all spoilers but I definitely recommend checking it out for the final act alone. If you are a Ghostbusters fan, then you’ll definitely get something out of this. Expand

DON’T BELIEVE THE SO CALLED “PROFESSIONAL” REVIEWS

I went and saw this with my two sons 10 and 13 - I say this because personally I grew up with the ghostbusters and know the first two movies almost line by line so my thoughts will of course be biased. I think that if you know the first movie at least you will be in for a treat although the knowledge is not entirely needed as my boys absolutely loved it - my oldest even cried at the end (I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theatre) outside of fan service it’s a great movie that keeps the ghostbusters spirit alive, it can get downright scary and serious at times but is lighthearted and fun as well - it feels like a true ghostbusters movie with a gritty modern coat of paint. I am appalled at the negative critic reviews - not only is this a classic but it does a great job of honoring the late Harold Ramis. For those of us that grew up with the franchise and never got a third movie (outside of the game that released over a decade ago which was great in its own right) this is what you have been waiting for. For younger people this is enough to ignite a love for this amazing franchise - my boys loved it. For the reviewers who think this wasn’t good enough? I hope you lose your job, the difference between audience and critic reception is staggering, you have obviously lost touch with what people like.

Ultimately, it all had to stay in the family, and Jason Reitman decided to pay homage to his father's work in the two original films.

There were some risks, of course, especially as there is still a lot of noise and complaints about Paul Feig's disappointing 2016 film, but I have to say that any comparison is simply pointless and unnecessary.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a straightforward film that doesn't mess around.
It offers a simple but engaging story involving new and mostly interesting characters, who manage to hold the weight of the narrative, and although at many points it can err on the side of nostalgia and lean too heavily on the past, it manages to come across as an entertaining, funny, and surprisingly touching film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely agree with most of the critics on this one. Pale mimic of the first Ghostbusters and an attempt to make the franchise into a dramatic comedy with kids at the center of the story; absolutely nothing to do with the feel and humor of the first two movies. I miss Harold Ramis and his presence as Egon, but this bordered on distasteful. What's the point of bringing back original cast when they are pretty much only making cameos? Especially in the credits??? Could have been so much better and bigger... Expand

Why the discord? It's ok to look back at the past and remember things and people fondly, don't feel bad, just so long as you don't obsessively dwell in the past, as in re-watching OG Ghostbusters 200 times and know it inside and out.

The movie was fun, felt sincere (they didn't put words into anyone's mouth like Di$ney) and the callbacks are great for the kids to spot. It was nice to see the has beens who just showed up and didn't really help anyway but the film was all about the new characters.

All in all it was like opening an old photo album, looking back on the old times, then adding new pictures to the leaves at the back. There's nothing wrong with that, don't feel bad, just put the book back on the shelf and get on with your life afterwards.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. so much about this film is lazy or just doesn't make sense. The characters are shallow and its so unoriginal it's untrue. It's basically the same movie rehashed. Marsh mellow men make a return, for no logical reason whatsoever. There are even some shots that are exactly the same, like the dog smashing through a buildings entrance and skidding to the side. Sure, it feels like an 80's film and his has that Spielberg thing going on, but under all the surface level stuff it's hollow. Why can Spengler walk around as a ghost, move stuff, stroke peoples faces? sentimentality takes precedence over believability. He even cries! a ghost, crying? This movie is worse than the last train wreck even. at least that film tried to be original. At the end the three originals turn up, their presence merely shoe horned in there for fan service. In fact by turning up and helping they negate the struggle of the protagonist. Spengler even has to steady his granddaughters beam as a ghost. Talk about hand holding. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was goofy, with a hollow plot and nothing original to offer.

The kids were extremely cringe (A kid named Podcast? Really?). Paul Rudd and the old crew are barely in it. McKenna Grace, who people keep gushing over, may have been the cringiest thing in the entire movie

I did not laugh except when it was unintentional. For all the people saying it's hilarious. It isn't.

They recycled literally anything they could from the first movie. It was essentially a barrage of nostalgia. But at the end of the day, my biggest gripe is that this was a dumb kids movie and nothing like the first one. It's totally different in tone. My Ghostbusters doesn't have any teen drama in it. How did we go from 4 grown men running a Ghostbusting business to teen drama with some ghostbusting on the side?

I wish I never saw this movie. I put this one BARELY above the 2016 movie. And I hate that movie.

At least the originals still exist. I recommend watching 1 and 2 and skipping this nostalgia bait garbage.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just watched this movie on IMAX and felt it paid homage to the original while at the same time creating its own tale. The movie is truly both a coming of age movie and a literal passing of the torch movie. I felt the movie was less a comedy about ghosts , but as ghost story that had elements of comedy within it. Whereas the original version went fir over the top laughs, this one tries to give a more dark and foreboding feel to it. The movie opens with an action sequence that makes the audience wonder who or what is the main villain and then over the course of the movie it paints a picture to explain the lore of the Ghostbusters and how it fits into modern timelines. Overall, good movie. Expand

The film offered closure on the main cast, it introduced us to the next generation of family members and it showed us that taking the jump into the unknown doesn't have to be scary or fail. Where the 2016 failed in trying to be funny and over explain everything, afterlife succeeded. The story was great, it had scary moments, comedic moments, sad moments and paid homage to family and the love and respect they had for Harold. I don't think we could have asked for a better swan song and a Segway to relaunch the franchise for the next generation of Ghostbusters. I go to the cinema to enjoy and be entertained by a film, not to have gender identity politics rammed down my throat and this achieved that, the cast were brilliant and the handling of gender swapping the lead role was done brilliantly. Many in Hollywood and the wider film industry could learn from this, films are created for cinema customers to be entertained and offer escapism, not for critics who want identity politics and real world issues. To me Ghostbusters Afterlife is by far the best film I have seen in a long long time, it made me laugh, it made me scared, it kept me entertained and it made me cry. Expand

It captures the feel and heart of the first movie very well with a new cast that I feel can definitely carry the franchise. The character of Phebe was excellent and I found myself rooting for her the entire movie. Now it does fall under the same category as The Force Awakens as almost a repeat of the first one, but were Force Awakens slips by focusing on destroying the past movies, Ghostbusters: After Life is a great passing of the torch. Plus the way the said goodbye to Harold brought a tear to my eye. Go see this and be excited for the future. Expand

A mom and her 2 kids move to a remote dirt farm left by her estranged father. They soon discover remnants from the original Ghostbusters team, including the inevitable appearance of new phantoms. Director Jason Reitman (whose dad helmed the original) has cast an able young group and kept the pace moving, but the writing lacks much comic punch, the action scenes are flat and the EFX offer nothing new. Kids will probably enjoy this vanilla retelling, while dragging their parents, who will revel in the original.

Yet above these criticisms the film manages to at least partly entertain and does an emotionally satisfying job of not only wrapping up Egon’s legacy but Harold Ramis legacy as well. I just wish the original actors were more involved but coming from a GB fan with very high standards the filmmaker was at least partly successful in both closing the original movie legacy while forging a new one. This movie carries along the mood and bit of comedy from the originals, rather than trying to be a straight up comedy reboot like 2016. Every moment of this movie was some of the most enjoyable movie time I’ve had in a while. The kid actors were actually a surprising breath of fresh air while still continuing from the originals.

So basically, nothing was disappointing. I didn’t even ask for anything but a sequel, and that’s what we got. Anyone saying the word “reboot” couldn’t be further from the truth.

A great shout out original both heartwarming and fun. The comedy was there but not as funny as the original. Better than second movie and stranger than the reboot. Very exceptional. Hits a lot of nostalgia notes, but it’s a lot more than that! A decent script, solid acting from most characters. Best movie I’ve seen in years.

What a beautiful love letter to all the fans of the original Ghostbusters. And updated perfectly to 2021's sensibilities without being woke, or insulting to any one group of people like Hollywood is wont to do these days i.e. the Midwest representation.

Not sure why people are unhappy about this because while yes, it's very Force Awakens-y, it did something really well with Egon's granddaughter's journey to finding her place in the world.

This is a damn good movie for any child to learn about confidence. I'd have one if I could, grow it in a special chamber just to let him/her watch this and feel good about growing up.

'Cause you know? We live in a society.

This movie stays true to the Ghostbusters franchise, and I thank the director and studio for this. Every franchise has been added to and most of them tarnish the once-beloved stories. This movie has a few surprises, well-written, casted, acted, and the music was great. But what really made me like it was the use of Harold Ramis's character after his decease. They incorporated him into the story and used him in it to pass on the legacy in a satisfying way. Expand

I can only hope this is the start of more entries into Ghostbusters. Really great acting too, solid moments that had me in stiches that had no reason to, other than the acting.
