Fun. corny, cheesy and crazy all in one film. Must watch! This is probably the strangest film I've seen in a while but it is one everyone should watch.

Things suddenly become extremely weird when she and her hubby (Kw Huy Quan in a charming turn) go to the IRS (featuring Jamie Lee Curtis as a frumpy auditor). She ends up as various incarnations of herself in multiverses fighting to save the universe from destruction. Even though this description sounds like it may be a Marvel-based superhero adventure, it's not. It's a zany trip thru several realities with confusing connections. These sci-fi sections are crazy fun and the frenzied martial arts moments propel the film. However, there's a lot of metaphysical mumbo jumbo that slows the momentum. There are also attempts at emotional family connections that don't resonate. This is the 2nd feature from Daniels, the directing duo whose 1st film was Swiss Army Man. An excerpt from that review applies to this film as well, "A highly-original and rollickingly-weird premise that gets bogged down with too much message." Expand

However I have to say I felt exhausted after watching this confusing, overlong, mess of a movie. The multiverse concept is already a well-worn trope, and ultimately the basic message of the film is quite simplistic. Too many effects, too much cgi and too many comedy kung-fu fights made me feel as though the director was making it up as he went along and throwing everything possible at the screen in case some of it stuck. I hear they originally wrote the main part for Jackie Chan, and it's a shame as he would have been ideal for this - though Michelle Yeoh was a good stand in. Overall I can't say I enjoyed this movie and felt it wasn't nearly as clever as it thought it was. Expand

It was hyper-dense , overly expositional and I hated the music. My biggest gripe with the film is its art direction - it has the thrown together aesthetic of a Gondry movie but without the charm - if it had a lusher more expensive look then the juxta-position of the ludicrous and the logical would have landed better for me and I would have been seduced. BUT at a certain point the heart of the movie is through the noise, the music actually gels and I found it quite touching. So in the end I'd rate it as an interesting failure with strong performances but with writing and aesthetics which let it down. Expand

The movies zany approach can be divisive and difficult but the human story of family beneath it is made better because of it. The performances here are brilliant but what takes the cake here is the direction and editing. This movie is a visual feast ! The nearly boundless costumes, settings and cuts are seamlessly delivered here.
The film works magic by embracing excess, finding a kind of harmony and possibility within it, and reminding us of the beauty and lunacy of the human experience along the way

Zany, funny and increadibly creative movie that overstays its welcome and doesn't quite nail the themes/arc/plot.

The first 60 minutes of this movie are incredibly entertaining and some of the most creative cinema in a while. Unfortunately, much of the movie takes place inside an office building so the setting wears off after a while. And once the concept is fully explored, the emotional heart of the movie takes too long to come together, despite being fairly simple.

So despite being an incredibly unique film, I was quite exhausted by the end of it and wished we could have gotten to the finish line 20 minutes earlier.

Its scope outreaches it's grasp however with some ultimately distracting concepts being thrown about the place. At its core though it follows the concept of living your life through the filter of nihilism Vs love. The cast are fantastic with some very cool moments spread throughout. Sadly as mentioned the scope was just a bit too big for what we see on the screen and so things fall a bit flat. Reminded me of vanilla sky for some reason. Great movie if you like something on the border of what the medium is capable of. Expand

Chances are most of us aren't even aware of any of our other selves, but those well versed in metaphysical circles have a good sense about them, and making audiences aware of this phenomenon is what this manic comedy-drama is all about. When the beleaguered owner of a laundromat is beset by issues with her husband, father, daughter and the IRS, it seems, like the title implies, that everything hits, all at once. But that's nothing compared to what happens when she's unexpectedly contacted by a different version of her spouse who informs her that he's been looking for her for a long time to help resolve an issue with a growing evil in the multiverse, a concept with which she's supposedly best suited but completely unfamiliar. However, as her awareness grows, this new adventure begins opening doors for her in unexpected ways, not only in the universe in which she dwells, but also those in which other versions of herself reside. The result is an insightful and hilarious exploration of some heady philosophical and moral concepts, punctuated by stunningly clever visual effects, huge laughs, clever send-ups of a variety of other films, and dynamite performances by Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis. Nevertheless, despite these assets, the film goes on far too long, telling a story that could have easily been trimmed by about a half-hour, primarily by eliminating some bits that overstay their welcome (such as take-offs of martial arts movies that start out funny but grow tiresome after a few too many runs). This offering from directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert is certainly an ambitious and inventive release, but it's unfortunate that the filmmakers didn't know when to quit. It's indeed worth a look, but it's regrettable that those responsible for the picture didn't quite know when to stop. Expand

Not really surprisingly, and it's too long, ok performances by all the cast and with all the flaws and it did might sound harsh but it wasn't truly a bad movie overall but it just not the one that at very least ok too for me so i was still pretty much disappointed, despite the cool special effects and the Multiverse thing, the real story of the film was really my major problem because it didn't fit with the other side of the story, and if you erase all the Multiverse stuff, it might be even work more, it just doesn't connect, it's a mixed bag of a feeling, it felt very forced, again i like the super weird Multiverse thing that they did, the special effects, the style, the color, the lighting, the cinematography, the score, and performance was still ok, but as a whole combined with the real story, it didn't work for me, and it's surprisingly becoming my new unpopular opinion on possibly the most talked film of 2022 and the one that got a lot of praise, not for me. Watching all at once is a mistake because it feels like a 90's MTV music video there's so much happening too fast! It gives me a headache and I'm not even an epileptic. It continues a trend of current movies to have scenes that are too fast. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed the first part of this film, which played out like an original sci-fi martial arts movie with some zany comedy reminiscent of King Fu Hustle and even a bit of a horror feel. But then it becomes very preachy and pretentious and the moral message the director is trying to get across takes precedence to believability or plot coherence. There are many epistemic assumptions and the philosophy of the writers is sloppy and clichéd in regards to multiverses and quantum mechanics. The idea of 'nothing means anything' is still applying meaning. In the end the overall message is so basic it's almost patronising. Kudos to all the actors though, they really did a great job. I now want to see a really good Sci fi martial arts movie, other than Black Mask. Expand

Even if as producers, the Russo brothers continue their tireless work of cinematographic and scientific devastation. How many things do they mention? Michel Gondry, Jackie Chan and Hong Kong action movies, John Carpenter ["Big Trouble in Little China"] and the Wachowskis ["The Matrix"], the politically correct. And so far nothing serious. But then they come to "2001" and "Mr. Nobody" with its quantum man, and this gives the measure of how certain elevated themes are swept away by a demented approach, sometimes even scatological and with a philosophy that is a hymn to banality. Then: stop confusing multiverse, metaverse and pluriverse. They might turn to a fùcking scientific advisor. Or do they address to such an ignorant target audience because it's okay/better this way? "Cult movie of our time but, as often happens in films of this kind, the boundary between the hypertrophied and the exhausting can become very blurred" (Daria Pomponio).

The Chinese dialog with subtitles was painful to listen to. Without the subtitles we could barely understand them. Overall, the movie seemed chaotic with no coherent plot. Of course there were the Hollywierd recurring themes such as domineering assertive females and dimwitted hapless males. I'm sure they were ecstatic at the lack of white males. It's getting to the point where I can no longer watch anything that Hollywierd produces. Everything is woke ad nauseum. Expand

Immersive mania simulator.

I had to roll the windows all the way down on the drive home to feel the wind on my face in order to recover from the torture of this movie. I supported my strained forehead with my hand during most of the movie, and nearly walked out several times. I couldn't wait for it to end, and was disappointed at the fake ending.

Out of context (what context?) the majority of the movie looks and sounds very good, if not epic, but, taken together, it is incoherent and dangerous for human consumption. This is contemporary art house cinema, dissonant and chaotic. Acting, editing, audio mixing, and photography were all very good.

I laughed at exactly one scene, and in another scene, a line about what could have been in past lives brought me to tears. By the last quarter of the film, the language of the movie had been established, allowing for mild enjoyment and resolution to some degree, but nothing about how or why this movie was made redeems its terrible watchability.

AVOID this utterly chaotic waste of time.

The movie starts with totally unsympathetic characters, self-absorbed and selfish, and then proceeds into silly situations with MORE unpleasant people. The silliness level is apparently not enough for the producers, because then the plot moves from silly then chaotic into just plain stupid, STILL with no sympathetic characters or direction.

The movie never shows an admirable person or direction, never becomes more than chaotic kung fu with bread sticks, silly and demeaning. Wow.

I watched more than an hour of this tripe, then left. The fact that is so highly rated by so many people shows me exactly why America has so many terrible problems now, apparently unsolvable: Far too many Americans are total idiots (and I grew up in Memphis, now in the UK for 30 years)

Just when I was hoping this annoying movie was over, they'd drill in their point another time, another way. Ironically, they didn't spend enough time in any of her other lives to really care about the character(s).

I'm a big fan of Michelle Yeoh. She was as good as she could be with what she was given. The other actors were good, too. To me, this seems like a director trying too hard to be cool. Its structure reminds me a lot of a movie from 1974 called Zardoz and it's every bit as disjointed.

This is definitely NOT one of those times. This was one of the most pointless, gratuitous violence-filled movies I have ever seen. And I REALLY tried to give it a chance, but with 40 minutes to go, we finally walked out. I had such high hopes from the trailer, expecting to see a movie that, yes, was frenetic but was reaching to show a woman who was seeking to find meaning in different versions of her life and herself. It even started out okay for the first 20 minutes. But then it relied on stupid comedy (that wasn’t even that funny) and sensationalized violence that had no purpose. Do not waste your time or money as I did. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An angry lesbian girl whose conflicted mother doesn't want to accept her girlfriend creates a bagel of despair that turns into a black hole, threatening to destroy countless parallel universes. I cannot understand how this was widely proclaimed one of the best movies of 2022. This movie is a pretentious mess that only professional movie critics would like. The editing can induce an epileptic fit, the story paper thin. The humor is crass and childish - there's a parallel universe where people have hot dogs for fingers. There's a scene where two men kung fu fight with butt plugs. Not hitting each other with butt plugs, no they fight with butt plugs inside them. In their butts. That is how you make the "movie of 2022", folks.

According to the Wikipedia synopsis this movies handles themes like existentialism, generational trauma, nihilism, absurdism, and Asian-American identity, and I say with great confidence that I didn't see anything of the sort. Sure, it pretends to, with pretentious hand waving and preachy yelling, but there is nothing you can take away and apply to your own life. What this movie does have though is a talking raccoon, under a chef's hat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Quasi-spoilers follow) Oh my. This is what you continue to get from a generation steeped in postmodern absurdity. This hot-mess valiantly tries to reeeally stretch the bounds of imagination but is so brainlessly weird it ultimately means nothing. In fact half-way through this thing the multi-universe goddess proclaims the gleaming space bagel we're forced to behold proves "nothing matters." This is what we've been waiting for? In and around the tediously repetitive martial arts insanity we get to enjoy large bendy adult toys waved about and people deliberately shoving objects up their rectums in order to jump from multiverse to multiverse. It tries to weave in a touching message about the value of family but it is so unhinged, disjointed, disturbing, and just wickedly uncomfortable to endure that it is an absolutely waste-of-time. It would be nice if filmmakers would actually put out things that are genuinely original, uniquely engaging, actually enjoyable - maybe in another universe they are. Expand

Hollywood today is no longer an entertainment machine that delivers film products tailored to the masses, but a political propaganda machine that spreads a perverse message that is poisoned and insidious with something evil. It is trying with all its might to spread worldwide a sick political agenda. The origins of which were laid down years ago by certain groups that are now in power to spread today the new world view in cooperation with Hollywood. The old beautiful Hollywood that we all loved, revered and admired, that gave us thrilling wonderful movie dreams, is almost gone and the puny remnants that still exist will also soon disappear and be replaced by this diseased growth that is spreading like a deadly cancer, spreading rapidly and killing and devouring everything that was once good and beautiful. As a comedy it fails, its humor is very childish and ridiculous, there are comedy movies from the time of our grandparents whose humor still seems funny to us today, the humor of this movie is almost purely visual by showing ridiculous fights or characters dressed in ridiculous to say an example. As a science fiction genre, it also fails, despite the fact that the genre is fantasy, in general, the universe that we are presented with has consistency, it is credible, it has logic and if there are elements that are not very credible, they end up being few or scarce. The science fiction of this movie is so silly, so unbelievable that I can't really immerse myself in it. The story and relationship between the mother and her daughter, and how it develops, doesn't seem bad to me, but the other elements that I mentioned before are like ruining the experience of the movie itself. The film is new, I don't know if you could even talk about a new genre because of how incredibly chaotic it is, but even so, the stupidity of the plot, the stupidity of its universe, the bad humor, the nonsense of how several of the events take place that make me unable to recommend it and rate it negatively.
