Despite being a 'comedy', it manages to earnestly capture more than just 'funny' emotions. It captures suffocating mundanity, and nihilism at a multiverse, and makes you smile in the face of it.

The action scenes are playful and imaginative.

I liked that its set in such a domestic, dare I say particularly boring setting as an IRS office. The visual effects are great - I liked the cartoon strip feel to some effects in particular (I won't elaborate so as not to provide potential spoilers). I found it difficult to follow all the plot details but I certainly wouldn't say that affected my enjoyment of the film overall. Watching the fast paced fight scenes reminded me a little of kung fu or samurai films of the 1970s. At times Chinese songs are played in the background and it was nice to see the various family members speaking in their (I assume) mother tongue. As over the top as it undoubtedly is for the most part, there is a point in which things slow down significantly - that is somewhat poignant. I should perhaps note that a fair amount of the dialogue is in either Mandarin or Cantonese, hence subtitles are often present, which may or may not put you off it. Its a very engrossing and yet also somewhat baffling film, with a quirky, arty feel to it to an extent but enough mainstream CGI to entertain the audience well, I reckon. It's definitely a film to re-watch, as I was left thinking 'what did I just see?' by the end.

Needless to say, I would definitely recommend this film, yes.

Before I went to the cinema, I knew nothing about the film, neither the genre nor the directors. When the movie ended, I still didn’t really know what it was but I was sure of one thing, it was amazing. The more I think about it, the more I realize that this film has no real flaw. The action scenes are very beautiful and we feel all the love of the directors for the films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. The editing is very fluid and pleasant. The film is well rhythmic, you never get bored. The writing is as touching as it is funny. This film is really impressive, it surprises us every second. You never really know what you’re watching, you alternate between sf and family drama. This film is really a new breath in the current film industry, an author’s blockbuster that never suffers from its low budget and that could become for the next generation of filmmakers a revolutionary film as was the first Matrix (whose film is inspired ) by its positivity, its universal message, and its cinematic qualities. There are laughs, there are tears, and there are gasps. No other motion picture has sent me soul-searching the way that EEAAO has. So much of this film relies on Michelle Yeoh’s performance, and she delivers in every way. There are moments on screen in which Yeoh is literally opening her heart in front of our eyes, and that is a powerful thing to depict on film. Expand

The film works magic by embracing excess, finding a kind of harmony and possibility within it, and reminding us of the beauty and lunacy of the human experience along the way

The film is chaotic, disorienting, innovative, thought-provoking, undisciplined and profoundly moving. It’s impossible to summarize briefly. But “Everything …” is also the best reason to venture out to a movie theater since the pandemic began over two years ago.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – the Daniels - who co-wrote and co-directed this film, are veterans of several movie shorts and music videos. Their previous feature film, 2016’s “Swiss Army Man,” is summarized by IMDb as follows: “A hopeless man stranded on a desert island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.” In “Everything …” they graduate from mundane topics like human mortality to tackle the multiverse.

The idea of the multiverse posits that there are an infinite number of universes – “alternate universes” or “parallel universes” – where the consequences of all the choices we make or don’t make are played out to their logical conclusions. It’s an idea that has been endorsed by Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson. But philosophically, it’s a pretty depressing brand of nihilism: how can life have meaning if none of our choices really matter?

The Daniels use the multiverse for two purposes. First, when characters jump from one alternate universe to another, the moviegoer can explore the alternate life stories of the primarily characters, particularly Evelyn (a spectacular Michelle Yeoh - 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) who is an unhappily married, dissatisfied co-owner of a laundromat whose main achievement has been disappointing her father. But in alternate universes where she has made different choices, Evelyn is, variously, a famous singer, a star of martial arts films, a sign-twirler on the street, a resident of a universe where everyone has hotdogs instead of fingers and, most poignantly, one of two sentient rocks on an uninhabitable planet (the most touching scenes in the film). Evelyn bounces from one universe to another to help her struggling daughter Joy (yes, I do see the irony) who, as many parents would predict, is both a confused young adult and also Jobu Tupaki, an arch-villain bent on destroying the multiverse. In one scene, Joy/Jobu confides that she has used her superpowers to place all the important things in the world in a bagel (you got it: an “everything bagel”).

The Daniels also use alternate universes to explore core concepts around family dynamics: the paralytic effect of parental disapproval; the notion that a family member’s quiet inaction sometimes represents kindness and strength, not passivity; and finally the strong suggestion that parental love is the most powerful force in the universe. At the end of the day, this weirdly wonderful film shares a powerful theme with the Bible, the Torah, the Koran and almost any good Kurt Vonnegut novel: in a confusing, scary, sometimes brutal universe, we’d all be better off if we all treated one another with a little more kindness.

Probably... but probably not... but mostly likely both at the same time? Probably. And No! This is not a "postmodern" film that proclaims "nothing matters", as some fools on here are convinced. First of all, "postmodernism" is not the same thing as "nihilism". Second of all, this is *not* a film about how "nothing matters", this is a film about how *everything* matters. Every choice, every relationship, every cream cheese bagel!!! Do some of the actors in this movie need to lose some weight? Yes. Are there lesbians included in this package? Yes. Do I give a **** No. Is watching this movie the first time I've had a psychedelic experience and contemplated our metaphysical reality and how consciousness relates to it? No. Is this a better multiverse movie than that mainstream curated Doctor Strange Multiverse **** that released the same year and probably grossed more money at the box office cuz normies gonna normie?

É sobre valer a pena cada segundo, e "Everything Everywhere All at Once" valeu.

Marvel, se curve!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Quasi-spoilers follow) Oh my. This is what you continue to get from a generation steeped in postmodern absurdity. This hot-mess valiantly tries to reeeally stretch the bounds of imagination but is so brainlessly weird it ultimately means nothing. In fact half-way through this thing the multi-universe goddess proclaims the gleaming space bagel we're forced to behold proves "nothing matters." This is what we've been waiting for? In and around the tediously repetitive martial arts insanity we get to enjoy large bendy adult toys waved about and people deliberately shoving objects up their rectums in order to jump from multiverse to multiverse. It tries to weave in a touching message about the value of family but it is so unhinged, disjointed, disturbing, and just wickedly uncomfortable to endure that it is an absolutely waste-of-time. It would be nice if filmmakers would actually put out things that are genuinely original, uniquely engaging, actually enjoyable - maybe in another universe they are. Expand

However I have to say I felt exhausted after watching this confusing, overlong, mess of a movie. The multiverse concept is already a well-worn trope, and ultimately the basic message of the film is quite simplistic. Too many effects, too much cgi and too many comedy kung-fu fights made me feel as though the director was making it up as he went along and throwing everything possible at the screen in case some of it stuck. I hear they originally wrote the main part for Jackie Chan, and it's a shame as he would have been ideal for this - though Michelle Yeoh was a good stand in. Overall I can't say I enjoyed this movie and felt it wasn't nearly as clever as it thought it was. Expand

Yes, the film is probably using a topic already used in superhero films, but what really stands out is its narrative, acting, and directing.

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' is funny, exciting, bonkers, and very original. It reminded me a lot of 'The Worst Person in the World;' it doesn't matter if you're the worst being in the multiverse, there'll always be something you're good at. It's just a matter of finding it.

Immersive mania simulator.

I had to roll the windows all the way down on the drive home to feel the wind on my face in order to recover from the torture of this movie. I supported my strained forehead with my hand during most of the movie, and nearly walked out several times. I couldn't wait for it to end, and was disappointed at the fake ending.

Out of context (what context?) the majority of the movie looks and sounds very good, if not epic, but, taken together, it is incoherent and dangerous for human consumption. This is contemporary art house cinema, dissonant and chaotic. Acting, editing, audio mixing, and photography were all very good.

I laughed at exactly one scene, and in another scene, a line about what could have been in past lives brought me to tears. By the last quarter of the film, the language of the movie had been established, allowing for mild enjoyment and resolution to some degree, but nothing about how or why this movie was made redeems its terrible watchability.

I was only aware of their previous film Swiss Army Man, and found that to be a delight, and a wonderful showcase for the lead actors. Michelle Yeoh is a legend, of course, but the revelation and welcome return to film is Kw Huy Quan, of Temple Of Doom and Goonies fame, as her husband. He has to play her partner in various incarnations and it's a joy to watch. And not to forget James Wong, who shows no sign of slowing down as he approaches a century on this planet. It's rare to find a film that engages the eye, the heart and the mind so successfully. Expand

There are new, unique, and well-executed ideas in its story, cinematography and so much more. It's very entertaining, and even as someone who isn't as onboard with the movie's type of jokes, I still found it very fun. It's also very emotionally heartfelt and had some moments that were undeniably hard-hitting, even though I couldn't truly personally relate to most of the characters and their struggles.

The only negatives, which are rather insignificant in comparison to everything the movie does right, is that its pace, in the beginning, is pretty sluggish and it continues to explain how its world works even though it has already given all the information needed to get it. The most nagging issue for me, although, is how blatantly clear it is what the movie is a metaphor for. When it's so apparent what the movie is actually about, it puts the necessity of the framework by which the story is told into question.

Nevertheless, it's a fantastic movie, the performances are stellar, especially from Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan, and I'd highly recommend the movie to just about anyone.

At its core though it follows the concept of living your life through the filter of nihilism Vs love. The cast are fantastic with some very cool moments spread throughout. Sadly as mentioned the scope was just a bit too big for what we see on the screen and so things fall a bit flat. Reminded me of vanilla sky for some reason. I compare it to The Matrix.
Despite it's comedy accent the main value or truth shown in the film is a life recipe.
A very good one indeed:
- "kill people with kindness"
- "be proactive"
- "deal with things instead avoiding them"
- "make decisions and be proud of them"
The movie shows new concept of "matrix". It is no longer a virtual reality, but a multiverse driven by decisions. It reminds me of theory of everything combined with boltzmann brain concept.

Actors did a great job and stay true to their roles.
Not even for a second could I thought about them being unrealistic.

To my personal taste this is the best movie ever made.

AVOID this utterly chaotic waste of time.

The movie starts with totally unsympathetic characters, self-absorbed and selfish, and then proceeds into silly situations with MORE unpleasant people. The silliness level is apparently not enough for the producers, because then the plot moves from silly then chaotic into just plain stupid, STILL with no sympathetic characters or direction.

The movie never shows an admirable person or direction, never becomes more than chaotic kung fu with bread sticks, silly and demeaning. Wow.

I watched more than an hour of this tripe, then left. The fact that is so highly rated by so many people shows me exactly why America has so many terrible problems now, apparently unsolvable: Far too many Americans are total idiots (and I grew up in Memphis, now in the UK for 30 years)

Particularly impressedVery ambitious multiversal drama. I honestly was not expecting this movie to be built around a family delivered through a multiverse of astounding scenes and imagery but I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued by it. Particularly impressed by the brilliant Michelle Yeoh and the underhyped performance of Ke Huy Quan.

However, considering the high standards the movie sets for itself - despite the brilliance of its characters, how the story is told, and how the movie's plot unfolds, and - if Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is perceived as the fast-paced drama it is albeit set across a multiverse: The movie underdelivers. To be clear, yes, the movie borrows a lot from multiple genres but at its core it is mostly a drama.

In that light, it struggles to provide sufficient emotional fulfillment by the end of the movie and all the brilliance of the movie's methodology amounts to little. It also fails to deliver anything new or unique to match its multiversal ambitions, undermining its brilliance with a bagel. Point being: The movie shows that it can tell its story across a multiverse but ultimately does not prove that it has a reason to do so.

Also, while Stephanie Hsu was good for the most part, I think she perhaps lacked a functional range to portray the varieties of her character. Thus contributing to the emotional gap at the end of the movie.

Overall, it's a mostly superb movie, seriously original and put together with Oscar worthy editing. If there was one Oscar this movie would easily win, it would have to be for the editing work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed the first part of this film, which played out like an original sci-fi martial arts movie with some zany comedy reminiscent of King Fu Hustle and even a bit of a horror feel. But then it becomes very preachy and pretentious and the moral message the director is trying to get across takes precedence to believability or plot coherence. There are many epistemic assumptions and the philosophy of the writers is sloppy and clichéd in regards to multiverses and quantum mechanics. The idea of 'nothing means anything' is still applying meaning. In the end the overall message is so basic it's almost patronising. Kudos to all the actors though, they really did a great job. I now want to see a really good Sci fi martial arts movie, other than Black Mask. Expand

It was hyper-dense , overly expositional and I hated the music. My biggest gripe with the film is its art direction - it has the thrown together aesthetic of a Gondry movie but without the charm - if it had a lusher more expensive look then the juxta-position of the ludicrous and the logical would have landed better for me and I would have been seduced. BUT at a certain point the heart of the movie is through the noise, the music actually gels and I found it quite touching. So in the end I'd rate it as an interesting failure with strong performances but with writing and aesthetics which let it down. Expand

Be kind... Be **** kind to everyone around you. No one's here with any purpose or reason and neither are you...
So let's just stop this endless battle of maintaining our superiority over others for a second, and be kind. Please.
Be kind.

Nothing matters. Everything's pointless. We are a speck of dust in this universe. And our existence or absence isn't going to change anything.
But, right now, at this moment,we are here. You and I are here. We all are here.Together.Hand in hand. So let's be kind. Let's be **** kind to each other.

P.S. Too much psyched to write anything about the film. Had to wipe off my tears continuously.
Gonna rewatch it soon and hopefully, that time won't be this much ecstatic. Won't say its completely flawless, but what Everything Everywhere All at Once achieves is becoming more and more rarer in this age of postmordern cinema.

All the other stuff is dressing and entertaining as h*ll. Highly recommend this.

It starts off with a great premise, but for a solid 45 minutes towards the ending the plot litterally goes *nowhere* ...
