Haven't been so entertained by a movie of this type since the original Willow. Also credit the easy going charm and devil-may-care attitude of Chris Pine, and the smarmy charm of Hugh Grant. The entire cast is game (pun intended), and look out for an enjoyable cameo midway through. Expand

Enjoyable movie because of the likeability of the characters, the goofy humor throughout and well crafted fantasy world. Don't watch it for anything deeper than that and you will have a good time!

I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Got some LOTR vibes from it. The ensemble cast resemble guardians of the galaxy in many ways. Some direct copy paste action scenes paying homage to other action flics like raptor chase from Jurassic park and hulk puny god from avengers. There were a few surprises here and there and yet nothing quite blew me away. Its very good for what it is.

Does it have a decent enough story to follow that gives weight to the conflicts and developments throughout the story? Yes! Does it have amazing visual elements that all work well with the world? Absolutely!

But most importantly, does it honour what Dungeons and Dragons is all about and keep true to the spirit of this world-renown table-top role-playing game and what makes it so beloved? On that point... Natural 20!

It was fun and the family enjoyed it. I really wish the "writers, actors, directors" would just shut the hell up and stop turning people off to their movies. This is defiantly the best of the D&D movies so far.

It's fun and forgettable with a few notable surprises and plot holes.

If you watched the trailer, they already spoiled half the movie, but there's still more fun to be had, along with some genuine laughs. Turn your brain off and you'll have fun.

Entertaining and fun but personally I think the comedy held it back and will probably prevent this movie from being remembered in a few years. Not sure why there can't just be a serious fantasy D&D movie but I suspect Critical Role is to blame.

To be honest, I had very low expectations, but the film surprised me very positively. Because it is a great adventure story with a beautiful world that is presented in great detail.

The magic is well done in this film (it is not a copy of Doctor Strange or Harry Potter). The actors have also done a good job. The story is also well thought out but there were still inconsistencies (not much). It is a strong comedy with very good jokes and funny moments. You can see that the jokes are not only for the kids but also for the older community. The fans of Dungeons and Dragons should be happy with the result, because it is not a bad film.

If you like comedy or adventure, you should definitely watch this film.

It isn't the best film ever made, however, it's worth watching. It keeps the soul of DnD; in some scenes though the eyes of some secondary character you can really see the hate of the DM just after a member of the party has completely destroyed his plans. The plot is fairly linear and simple, but not obvious or stupid, just like a one-shot. It's enjoyable by both DnD veterans and those who never heard what DnD is: the story is well explained so that everyone can understand it, but DnD veterans won't be bored because they will be focused on pointing out every single reference and hint to classes, locations, abilities, spells and so forth. The locations are wonderfully made, the atmosphere is not bad at all thanks to a solid soundtrack, the outfits are astounding (with few exceptions), and the characters are quite characterized and well-made. Even though some reviews talk about wokeness and cast diversity, it's never brought up in the film and the cast diversity doesn't seem forced. However, it has few flaws: most of the action scenes are full with blinding lights, mediocre VFXs and hundreds of cuts and horribles camera movements that prevent you from understanding what happens. And finally most of the CGI is mediocre (except from the final scenes). If you like watching fantasy films or you like DnD you'll surely love it, and even if you don't love fantasy films I think you will probably still like it due to it's light-hearted comedy; just don't expect an action packed film, or a film filled with intrigue or high emotions, but a simple solid, light-hearted fantasy film. Chris Pine heads up the gang that's out to rescue his daughter from the evil ruler (Hugh Grant, once again relishing the bad guy role). They go on an adventure that's relatively typical for this sort of tale, although there are surprisingly few dragons and virtually no dungeons. The actions sequences are OK and the effects are OK. What gives this movie its charm is the addition of a comic sensibility; not outright punchlines, but eye-rolling reactions that generate a few laughs. If it weren't for the popular franchise, this movie would quickly be relegated to the dungeon of similar movies. Expand

The unfortunate thing is that the film is so similar to what TV can produce nowadays - it is so middling and the first impressive scene only happens quite a while into the film. The final fight scene was also middling. I do wonder if the film could have made use of the gameplay of D&D to make this film distinct from all the swords and sandals pic around, but this franchise has already had flops in the 2000's so I think it was decided to be risk-adverse this time. Unfortunately, that is one wrong decision and the film is looking at a loss that will prevent future films being made. >2. There is quite a lot of D&D references about races, objects, places, etc. that without the subtitles and without a lot of giving it the benefit of doubt, I would have difficulty following. >3. Michelle Rodríguez always looks tired in this film. She was a downer that made the stories around her hard to believe. >4. Other parts of the film could have been emphasised more to highlight them, to make this film stand out amongst all the other similar films out there. These are all signs of poor directing and screenwriting. > How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Average. > Teens: Average. > Young adults: Good. > Medium-age adults: Good. > Older adults: Average. > My rating: 3/5 (no half scores). My knowledge about Dungeons & Dragons is basically null.
I only have a small understanding of the most elemental stuff about it and I must confess that because of this and because the movie didn't necessarily look appealing I wasn't so sure about watching it, but for that same reason I didn't predispose myself to anything and for that, watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves turned out to be a pleasant and fun surprise for me.

I don't know to what extent its charm will be enough to build the franchise it's evidently aiming to build, but it has the cast and formula to work if things don't get out of hand. I admit that it can feel a bit heavy at first because the story throws a lot at you to digest and the plot doesn't do the best job explaining its own world, but as far as I'm concerned it's more than comprehensible to any viewer. It's all a matter of paying enough attention.

The power of this movie lies in how much you are willing to immerse yourself in its fantasy, because everything revolves around it.
It's a kind of world that reminded me a bit of the Warcraft movie, but where Duncan Jones failed to introduce such a humongous world, John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein succeed in making this experience more humorous, more fun, more lighthearted, much more accessible and above all more exciting, and that also has a lot to do with the cast. There is chemistry in all of them, even when the group of actors look like a troupe of cosplayers, and the truth is that this helps a lot in any movie to advance the narrative in a better way. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a solid action/fantasy film that fits quite nicely into the spectrum of big franchises in CGI worlds. Worthy for fans and non-fans alike. If you understand that, then go and have a nice entertaining time because if you're expecting an art-film filled with super deep themes and want to judge it that way, then you are choosing your own disappointment.

I was steadfast against it because of the writers saying the quiet part out loud about purposely emasculating men. Spoiler alert: they weren't kidding (except for a nicely portrayed old school Paladin). But, being a parent of a teen, he was quite keen to see this movie, and we have strongly bonded over both baseball and old school AD&D, so off to the theater we went (matinee prices). I played AD&D in the 80s, during the height of the "zomg satanic" scares. My friends and I were, above all, nerds. Stranger Things portrayed that aspect of us quite well, minus the parallel world and telekinetic teen. It's been a joy to play AD&D as DM for my children and friends, although we are strictly a 1e, not 5e world. I'm sort of pleased to see so many people trying to retrofit to 1e from 5e in light of latest drama. However, having said that, I still recognized that this movie was going to try to cater/nod its way towards 5e players. The inclusion of things like the Dragonborn and bird people(?) races confirmed that for me. To the critiques: Even APART from "most tabletop adventures at home will be better than what the writers can come up with" criticism (which I find quite valid), we shouldn't forget that Gary Gygax et al created just EPIC adventures in module form. Tomb of Horrors, the Against the Giants series, even The Temple of Elemental Evil are all rousing adventures that are just sort of . . . out there for inspiration. My son pointed out that adventures like that almost might be better for a streaming service, in a serial form. That would also allow for far more character development/arcs. More nitpicky: I guess that while I enjoyed the movie, I also had quite a few problems with the writers not taking a few simple extra steps for either fan service, or just . . . making the movie MORE like D&D. For instance, Capt. Kirk certainly is portrayed to be a Bard. The old Bard started off as a fighter, abandons that class to become a thief, and then after sufficient time becomes a Bard, whereupon the character can employ abilities from the two abandoned classes. Capt. Kirk is shown, early in the movie, to be a fighter (armored, with a sword), later gives that up to become a thief, and then wields a lute, but there's no mention as to why that's important. IS he even a Bard, or do they just go to efforts to make it look that way, and then "lol nope?" Even a throwaway line might have helped, much less him using his OWN lute to cast an illusion at a later point in the movie (I won't be specific since it's just out). Also, what was with the "wheel of spells" thing on the belt of the Magic User? Not a line about how he got it, what it even is, or why he is inept at selecting spells? Is it a random thing, like the Deck of Many Things, or a Wand of Wonder? There is a single mention of the word "Cleric" in the movie -- those are typically healers. With a bit more knowledge, the writers could have allowed the Magic User to say, at a CERTAIN point in the movie ("I can't help [person]. I'm not a cleric."). Something like that, at least. Finally, they went to a hell of a lot of trouble to obtain the helm -- did anyone see what became of it by the end of the movie? Is this a Shazam 2 thing, where in the next movie someone is going to find it in a museum? Despite all these criticisms overall the movie was certainly . . . mid. Worth the matinee price at least. I'll be interested in how much 5e players like this movie compared to my traditionalist 1e self. Expand

Dungeons and Dragons

Episodic quests, a dash of dragons and mythos, lots of silly comedy (that don't necessarily land well) and even more backstories, and you have Dungeons and Dragons.

Dungeons and Dragons is steeped in comedy, so much so that every ounce of depth it could offer is quenched. With the plot bouncing from quest to quest, there's little time spent on character development and the story itself becomes convoluted.

The fight scenes are delicious, and that's where most of the potential Dungeons and Dragons could have is shown, albeit, they're mostly unnecessary, introduced poorly or undermined by their succeeding scenes. The CGI is also an eyesore.

To sum up, this movie was like an AI generation of a weak Marvel offering with Dungeons and Dragons as its lore. 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fear not Ranger. Barbarian, Magician, Thief! Cavalier and Acrobat. I am Dungeon Master, your guide in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons.

Admittedly I'm not too sure if I would have liked an actual live-action recreation of the classic 80's cartoon going by Hollywood's track record on these things. I mean take a look at the small cameo we get of the classic team in this new movie. Yes we do actually see Dungeon Master's teen team pop up in this wannabe franchise. I'm sure it will have flown over younger viewers heads but to those in the know it was a fleeting moment of joy. But taking a closer look and you can see how Hollywood always manages to mess things up. Firstly the team are bizarrely older than they are supposed to be. Bobby the barbarian, Diana, and Presto all looked like middle-aged parents in costumes. Hank and Sheila looked okay but Eric they somehow managed to race-swap...sigh! Why Hollywood? The actual costumes looked pretty good though, Hank the Ranger especially.

As for this movie, well it's a pretty bog-standard mission (or level) based mcguffin search scenario. Find a person to ask for information, follow information to specific location for an item or another person. Go to next location for another item or another person etc...Eventually it all leads to end of movie showdown with end of movie big boss. That isn't necessarily a problem with this movie though as it's based on the Dungeons & Dragons franchise and that's what you tend to do. However, it does come across as somewhat overly basic and more like a generic videogame adaptation. Visually speaking it was a mixed bag really. Like many movies these days the effects swing from being impressive in one scene to downright terrible in another. Case in point here; whilst there are some really good makeup and prosthetics effects for various fantasy characters along with some really nice-looking sets, there are also some blatantly obvious greenscreen shots and God-awful CGI. I still don't get how this happens in these big-budget movies. An obvious greenscreen shot or sequence always pulls me out of the movie, or moment.

The casting was poor all around in my opinion. Once again there seems to have been an outright obvious push to make the movie as diverse as possible whilst sacrificing quality choices. Most actors here are unknown to me but their acting skills didn't really impress, nor did their appearances in their costumes. Justin Smith, Rege-Jean Page, and the overly-used tough female character actress Michelle Rodriguez all looked completely out of place. Smith was a Black half-elf apparently, was this to rub in the faces of all the LotR's fans? I'm sorry but Elves aren't Black and neither are Dwarves. And yes I didn't like Pine's casting either, for me his face just didn't fit his character or this world. The only casting that did work for me was Hugh Grant as the slimy smarmy double-crossing Fitzwilliam, a far better villain than the actual main villain.

There were other aspects I found all too silly. I really didn't like the overweight dragon which was obviously CGI. Was this for comedy purposes? Swing and a miss. I also cringed at the all-too-common trope of using bald men with head tattoos as some kind of villainous horde of cult-like er...villains. How many fantasy movies have used that lazy idea? Geez!! Alas we also got the same for the main female baddie, bald with head tattoos...ugh! Because a powerful female sorceress has to be bald with head tattoos? She also turned out to be a really weak villain and got a blatantly nasty looking CGI ending courtesy of the CGI owlbear.

I couldn't really decide whether I liked this movie or not really. Some aspects I really enjoyed such as the various D&D species/races you see throughout, some of which looked great. I liked the settings or locations throughout, a nice range that showcased the world or realm. The hero roster was a good selection and overall the plot moved along nicely. But apart from the few things I've already mentioned there was a little too much that brought the movie down in the end. Close but overall not quite enough to grab me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ...I was one of the ones that walked out. It was *way* too shallow, and it was all something you've seen a dozen times before; and the CGI, I suppose it was what *passes* for decent nowadays; to below average, so I guess a 4 or 5/10. But then, I really don't think CGI looks good through a projector. It always looks better through a monitor, which makes sense I suppose; that's where it's gonna spend most of it's life after all.

That being said, if you are gonna make something *that* shallow; then you *need* to at least make it funny. It wasn't. It *might* pull a small chuckle or 2 out of you. But that's not really worth the price of admission and hours of general boredom, aka time wasted.

Also, as a side note. It didn't help that in a theater that was mostly empty, a guy and I assume his date; just *had* to sit in their "assigned seats" which happened to be right next to me. I was in 5, they were 6 & 7. Literally told them I "stole" the seat I was in as a hint, (I like to be at the center of the screen) and the silence your phones thing was already playing; yet still they sat down.

They didn't say anything, so it just felt rude to just get up and go sit in the same seat but two rows down. And, the guys nose kept whistling because he refused to blow it. The bastard.

Anyway, as for the movie itself; based on what I've seen, I'd probably rate it around the same as the CGI. It's a 4 or 5/10. Average or below average, which; considering it's D&D, well it's rather... Appropriate; I suppose.

Oh, and the choreography for the fight scenes was kinda; well, see above.

*Spoilers, I guess; not really.*
You've seen this plot point a thousand times, and I'm not giving many details; just wanted to say I almost lasted to the end, I think; forgot to check the time, but suffice it to say; I got up and walked out when the bad guy put his knife to the daughters throat.

And since I did walk out, I'm giving it a 5/10 I guess it could have gotten better or worse after I walked; but I kinda doubt it.

Oh, and the actors were fine; just, fine. They, worked with what they had.

The slide show plot advancements where CGI monsters or magic solutions emerge to the adventurers in peril is not too clever. There are good action and fx scenes but not enough to justify the runtime. It has some laughs. The character writing, delivery, and plot are bad. You’ll wish it was over halfway through. Expand

The humor is good and its good to have Pine in this, but the plot and globe trotting is very loose and the combat is particularly weak.

I have to say, I was quite disappointed. The characters are wafer thin with very little invested for me to get to know or like any of them. I didn’t care much about any of them. I quickly grasped the plot and suspended belief for 2+ hours and sat back to enjoy the show. Except, I didn’t. It lacked sincerity. It lurched from one chaotic scene to the next. There was no finesse. The jokes were telegraphed miles ahead and although people in the audience laughed, it was a polite chuckle rather than a guffaw. The movie tried to simulate the chaos, arguments and spontaneity of the D&D game. There was strong element of “making it up as they went along,” but it failed for me in conviction and delivery. There were no moody sets or backgrounds to the action. There was no attempt to create a universe in the manner of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. It was superficial, lacked sincerity and had a comic book quality, which, for me, was a missed opportunity. One of the most addictive aspects of the D&D game is for players and dungeon masters to populate the worlds, the landscape and towns, with detailed and absorbing descriptions of inns and castles and even the battles themselves. All this was missing here in order to move the plot from one disaster to the next. The cast is undeniably world-class but I cannot imagine in years to come that any of them will look back at this movie as anything other than a bit of fun and a pay check. None of them had anything to get their teeth into, except perhaps Hugh Grant as the campy villain, Forge Fitzwilliam. Classic it is not. The best scene ironically is where the protagonists try to get information from a series of dead people. Now that was really funny and resembles the sort of antics that may well occur in a real game of D&D. I so wanted to love this movie. I tried. I failed. Expand

A couple of minutes in to the movie, the hero jumps out of a window, holding on to a large bird. As he falls, our hero shouts "fly you big bird!"
A line which is strangely delivered with the cadence of a joke, without any of the actual content of a joke.
This is the rule, rather than the exception, unfortunately.
Like many a Disney/Marvel time-waster, the dialogue here is either exposition about the current MacGuffin hunt, trying to drive us toward the next scene, or "jokes" written by people who don't understand the concept of what a joke is.
I imagine the movie will be wildly entertaining for anyone who enjoys the Disney/Marvel franchise or who laughs at and quotes the same three adverts, that they've laughed at and quoted for the past decade, that and children under seven.
Anyone else will find this to be a trite, dull slog of a movie, which they'll have seen done better, before, repeatedly.

A good number of people recommended this to me and now I am questioning their taste Lol. I'm not a big Dungeons & Dragons guy, but I do really enjoy Fantasy and a big fan of Warhammer. I think the biggest flaw with this movie is I hated all of the characters. They were all either obnoxious or typical tropes. I'm usually fine with Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez they aren't exactly amazing, but this is the worst performance I've seen either of them give and I've seen WW1984 (Not so much Pine's fault that movie sucked). Some of the effects did look good, but a lot looked cartoonish and second rate. Also the second biggest crime was that most of the plot was pretty boring. Expand

Not bad in many ways, but the actresses they picked were all the ugliest, except the tiefling girl. Even the evil witch woman was cuter than Chris Pine's wife, Rodriguez, and their daughter. It's like they don't want women to be attractive anymore, but guys can be? Very woke. And the main guy and his little biotch boy mage friend are bumbling idiots half the time. Strong female leads are great, but why are **** male leads the norm as well? The story was alright. It incorporates some DnD elements. But it's all about overcoming your mistakes and low confidence rather than what skills apply or clever thinking (though there are moments of clever thinking, it isn't the main message of the movie... which is to try your best and you will succeed). The gross modern elements by Goldstein and co. are what drop the score low. Expand

I played D&D a couple of times back in my school days and like to play D&D based computer games.

I hoped to see some new fantasy movie to enjoy (no big expectations); instead I was bored and annoyed by the story and the presentation of the content.

I avoid marvel movies and here I was tricked into just another one of those in a fantasy setting. The trailer was the best part of this movie for me and should have sufficed.

Story: 2/10 so many unfunny "jokes" (laughed once) and inconsistency to create the sequence that they wanted it to be.

Visuals: 8/10: Did a good job presenting the fantasy world but not enough to distract me from the dull content.

Political correctnes scale: Typical Marvel - Heavily distorted: we need characters of every race, shape and form in one movie; they get unnatural superpowers to triumph over pure evil. Almost every character gave me the ick.

If this is how DnD is performed, I'd rather pass. Maybe it is purely intended for kids and fans of the genre where I don't belong to.

References do not make a movie/show worth watching. This movie is another poorly written atrocity out of the modern “entertainment” industry. They purchase the rights to an existing IP because they lack the creativity to come up with anything original, and then write an abysmal script filled with cardboard characters, uninteresting stories, a cliché plot, and stupid member berries. Oh look, I used a reference, which means my writing must be ready for the entertainment industry. What’s even more absurd is apparently they believe they deserve more money for doing a $#!& job. We are living in the dark ages of entertainment. So little of what they put out is worth watching. And they want a pay raise. LMAO. Modern “entertainment” writers need to be terminated. Incompetent, greedy morons. Expand
