It isn't the best film ever made, however, it's worth watching. It keeps the soul of DnD; in some scenes though the eyes of some secondary character you can really see the hate of the DM just after a member of the party has completely destroyed his plans. The plot is fairly linear and simple, but not obvious or stupid, just like a one-shot. It's enjoyable by both DnD veterans and those who never heard what DnD is: the story is well explained so that everyone can understand it, but DnD veterans won't be bored because they will be focused on pointing out every single reference and hint to classes, locations, abilities, spells and so forth. The locations are wonderfully made, the atmosphere is not bad at all thanks to a solid soundtrack, the outfits are astounding (with few exceptions), and the characters are quite characterized and well-made. Even though some reviews talk about wokeness and cast diversity, it's never brought up in the film and the cast diversity doesn't seem forced. However, it has few flaws: most of the action scenes are full with blinding lights, mediocre VFXs and hundreds of cuts and horribles camera movements that prevent you from understanding what happens. And finally most of the CGI is mediocre (except from the final scenes). If you like watching fantasy films or you like DnD you'll surely love it, and even if you don't love fantasy films I think you will probably still like it due to it's light-hearted comedy; just don't expect an action packed film, or a film filled with intrigue or high emotions, but a simple solid, light-hearted fantasy film. To be honest, I had very low expectations, but the film surprised me very positively. Because it is a great adventure story with a beautiful world that is presented in great detail.

The magic is well done in this film (it is not a copy of Doctor Strange or Harry Potter). The actors have also done a good job. The story is also well thought out but there were still inconsistencies (not much). It is a strong comedy with very good jokes and funny moments. You can see that the jokes are not only for the kids but also for the older community. The fans of Dungeons and Dragons should be happy with the result, because it is not a bad film.

If you like comedy or adventure, you should definitely watch this film.

Unlike other attempts to adapt not just board games, but any sort of source material, there really is a sense of respect and adoration for the game here, with special reverence towards the process of teamwork and problem-solving. You gotta love a film that just makes you want to drop everything and engage with the thing it's based on. Especially when you've never even engaged with that subject matter before. This really is the first real winner of 2023 for me and a solid contender for movie of the year so far — no joke. Expand

This film is a perfect blend of comedy, action, and adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The film's fast-paced action sequences are executed flawlessly, immersing the audience in a fantasy world filled with dragons, magic, and treacherous villains. The comedy in the film works extremely well, delivering numerous laugh-out-loud moments that add to the overall enjoyment of the film.

One of the highlights of the film is the incredible chemistry between the characters. The ensemble cast features a diverse group of characters, each with their unique personalities and backstories, and their interactions are both heartwarming and hilarious.

The cinema was packed to see this film, and it was clear that everyone was having a great time. It's refreshing to see a movie that isn't trying to promote a message or preach to the audience or view itself as being on the moral high ground. "Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves" is just a fun, enjoyable film that allows us all to escape reality and have a good time.

Overall, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves" is a highly entertaining film that will appeal to both fans of the fantasy genre and those who are just looking for a fun and exciting movie experience. We need more movies like this one, and I would highly recommend watching it to anyone who is looking for an adventure-filled escape from reality.

Genuinely Fantastic Adventure Film.

Finally a good Dungeons & Dragons movie, one that actually feels like it was a genuine campaign. The dialogue is well-written, the humor hits great, and the plot progresses naturally. There's a neat balance between tropey and unique that lends itself well to a film about a TTRPG.

I honestly didn't expect them to give as much focus as they did to the non-humanoid races in D&D, let alone all of the obscure monsters and creatures they included. The CGI wasn't groundbreaking, but the team behind it clearly had both the passion and skill to make a pretty good effort at bringing D&D's fantastic fantasy feeling to the big screen.

Every character but the druid were given arcs, the barbarian's was especially great. The wizard's was a bit tropey and the bard's was just absolute tropetopia but that just works to better sell you on the idea that this is a real campaign between friends.

Don't listen to anyone dragging this film, because this really is the first Hasbro vehicle in ages that was given to people that actually wanted to deliver quality cinema.

Chris Pine heads up the gang that's out to rescue his daughter from the evil ruler (Hugh Grant, once again relishing the bad guy role). They go on an adventure that's relatively typical for this sort of tale, although there are surprisingly few dragons and virtually no dungeons. The actions sequences are OK and the effects are OK. What gives this movie its charm is the addition of a comic sensibility; not outright punchlines, but eye-rolling reactions that generate a few laughs.

That being said I felt this move was great. Able to stand on its own feet regardless of the IP. The humor was on point and while the touchy feely stuff was predictable, the execution and how it tied into the previous parts of the movie work so well. That’s probably the thing this movie pulls off the best in that nothing is throw away. Every detail is relevant to the story but it doesn’t bog you down with details. It does have some curse words so parents be aware, but nothing comes off as gratuitous or unnecessary. It’s a really fun story and a great movie. Expand

My knowledge about Dungeons & Dragons is basically null.
I only have a small understanding of the most elemental stuff about it and I must confess that because of this and because the movie didn't necessarily look appealing I wasn't so sure about watching it, but for that same reason I didn't predispose myself to anything and for that, watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves turned out to be a pleasant and fun surprise for me.

I don't know to what extent its charm will be enough to build the franchise it's evidently aiming to build, but it has the cast and formula to work if things don't get out of hand. I admit that it can feel a bit heavy at first because the story throws a lot at you to digest and the plot doesn't do the best job explaining its own world, but as far as I'm concerned it's more than comprehensible to any viewer. It's all a matter of paying enough attention.

The power of this movie lies in how much you are willing to immerse yourself in its fantasy, because everything revolves around it.
It's a kind of world that reminded me a bit of the Warcraft movie, but where Duncan Jones failed to introduce such a humongous world, John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein succeed in making this experience more humorous, more fun, more lighthearted, much more accessible and above all more exciting, and that also has a lot to do with the cast. There is chemistry in all of them, even when the group of actors look like a troupe of cosplayers, and the truth is that this helps a lot in any movie to advance the narrative in a better way. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a solid action/fantasy film that fits quite nicely into the spectrum of big franchises in CGI worlds. Worthy for fans and non-fans alike. If you understand that, then go and have a nice entertaining time because if you're expecting an art-film filled with super deep themes and want to judge it that way, then you are choosing your own disappointment.

It was a perfect mix of serious, funny, emotional, and heartfelt moments. I can assure you there will be both laughter and tears, and you will be doing a whole lot of smiling throughout the movie. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Daisy Head, and Chloe Coleman all did a great job portraying their characters and made the movie better for it. The effects, both practical and CG, greatly enhanced the movie and there were some amazing landscapes and sets portrayed too. All in all, this is a must watch film for anyone looking to have a great time whether you're a fan of D&D or not. I would highly recommend reading the two prequel novels, Druid's Call and The Road to Neverwinter, too since they go deeper into the characters' origins and motivations, which really enhanced my enjoyment and made me feel a deeper connection with each of them. It feels like a giant D&D campaign filled with the entertainment, chaos, and intense action that can comes from such a game. Even the runtime felt rather adequate given that it’s 134 minutes. Everything connects back together and there’s an epic fight at the end very reminiscent of a D&D boss fight at the end that really makes you feel accomplished. Overall, a great watch that I would love to watch again and again. Expand

I played D&D a couple of times back in my school days and like to play D&D based computer games.

I hoped to see some new fantasy movie to enjoy (no big expectations); instead I was bored and annoyed by the story and the presentation of the content.

I avoid marvel movies and here I was tricked into just another one of those in a fantasy setting. The trailer was the best part of this movie for me and should have sufficed.

Story: 2/10 so many unfunny "jokes" (laughed once) and inconsistency to create the sequence that they wanted it to be.

Visuals: 8/10: Did a good job presenting the fantasy world but not enough to distract me from the dull content.

Political correctnes scale: Typical Marvel - Heavily distorted: we need characters of every race, shape and form in one movie; they get unnatural superpowers to triumph over pure evil. Almost every character gave me the ick.

If this is how DnD is performed, I'd rather pass. Maybe it is purely intended for kids and fans of the genre where I don't belong to.

I have to say, I was quite disappointed. The characters are wafer thin with very little invested for me to get to know or like any of them. I didn’t care much about any of them. I quickly grasped the plot and suspended belief for 2+ hours and sat back to enjoy the show. Except, I didn’t. It lacked sincerity. It lurched from one chaotic scene to the next. There was no finesse. The jokes were telegraphed miles ahead and although people in the audience laughed, it was a polite chuckle rather than a guffaw. The movie tried to simulate the chaos, arguments and spontaneity of the D&D game. There was strong element of “making it up as they went along,” but it failed for me in conviction and delivery. There were no moody sets or backgrounds to the action. There was no attempt to create a universe in the manner of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. It was superficial, lacked sincerity and had a comic book quality, which, for me, was a missed opportunity. One of the most addictive aspects of the D&D game is for players and dungeon masters to populate the worlds, the landscape and towns, with detailed and absorbing descriptions of inns and castles and even the battles themselves. All this was missing here in order to move the plot from one disaster to the next. The cast is undeniably world-class but I cannot imagine in years to come that any of them will look back at this movie as anything other than a bit of fun and a pay check. None of them had anything to get their teeth into, except perhaps Hugh Grant as the campy villain, Forge Fitzwilliam. Classic it is not. The best scene ironically is where the protagonists try to get information from a series of dead people. Now that was really funny and resembles the sort of antics that may well occur in a real game of D&D. I so wanted to love this movie. I tried. I failed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ...I was one of the ones that walked out. It was *way* too shallow, and it was all something you've seen a dozen times before; and the CGI, I suppose it was what *passes* for decent nowadays; to below average, so I guess a 4 or 5/10. But then, I really don't think CGI looks good through a projector. It always looks better through a monitor, which makes sense I suppose; that's where it's gonna spend most of it's life after all.

That being said, if you are gonna make something *that* shallow; then you *need* to at least make it funny. It wasn't. It *might* pull a small chuckle or 2 out of you. But that's not really worth the price of admission and hours of general boredom, aka time wasted.

Also, as a side note. It didn't help that in a theater that was mostly empty, a guy and I assume his date; just *had* to sit in their "assigned seats" which happened to be right next to me. I was in 5, they were 6 & 7. Literally told them I "stole" the seat I was in as a hint, (I like to be at the center of the screen) and the silence your phones thing was already playing; yet still they sat down.

They didn't say anything, so it just felt rude to just get up and go sit in the same seat but two rows down. And, the guys nose kept whistling because he refused to blow it. The bastard.

Anyway, as for the movie itself; based on what I've seen, I'd probably rate it around the same as the CGI. It's a 4 or 5/10. Average or below average, which; considering it's D&D, well it's rather... Appropriate; I suppose.

Oh, and the choreography for the fight scenes was kinda; well, see above.

*Spoilers, I guess; not really.*
You've seen this plot point a thousand times, and I'm not giving many details; just wanted to say I almost lasted to the end, I think; forgot to check the time, but suffice it to say; I got up and walked out when the bad guy put his knife to the daughters throat.

And since I did walk out, I'm giving it a 5/10 I guess it could have gotten better or worse after I walked; but I kinda doubt it.

Oh, and the actors were fine; just, fine. They, worked with what they had.

I really liked this one. For me, it managed to juggle the characters, plot, and action scenes, in a way that allowed me to care. stepping back, I see that there was a lot that needed to happen to get to the end and that could have easily become a jumbled mess. While not perfect, I think the story pacing was done well enough to get me to a satisfactory ending. The cast did a great job getting me to care for whatever shenanigans they were getting into. I'm probably not the best to critique someone else's writing, but if there were any bad writing, I couldn't tell. What I really liked is that each member of the party had their hero moments (some more than others) and that they played well with their character. in conclusion: Liked it a lot, time will tell if I really love it. Biggest on-screen assets are Chris Pine generously sharing the spotlight with his co-stars; and, VFX with unusually high visual vitality. On the downside, as with Shazam 2, I cant shake the feeling Im back again in 2010 or 2005. Spiderman No Way Home had a trickle of resonance with real life. D&D and Shazam 2 have zero resonance with issues or needs in the real world 2020-2023. Purely escapist movies like D&D and Shazam 2 assume audiences want nothing more for 90 to 120 minutes than relief and distraction from real world issues. If D&D makes a profit, Ill be happy to see outstanding creative teamwork rewarded. If D&D fails to find a large audience, Ill take more seriously how outstanding creative teamwork cant altogether substitute for, or paper over, being completely dissociated from all real world events, issues and needs. The other thing that stands out is that all performances are legendary, which is quite a feat for an ensemble movie. I badly want sequels.
Sidenote: CGI has come an amazingly long way.

The unfortunate thing is that the film is so similar to what TV can produce nowadays - it is so middling and the first impressive scene only happens quite a while into the film. The final fight scene was also middling. I do wonder if the film could have made use of the gameplay of D&D to make this film distinct from all the swords and sandals pic around, but this franchise has already had flops in the 2000's so I think it was decided to be risk-adverse this time. Unfortunately, that is one wrong decision and the film is looking at a loss that will prevent future films being made. >2. There is quite a lot of D&D references about races, objects, places, etc. that without the subtitles and without a lot of giving it the benefit of doubt, I would have difficulty following. >3. Michelle Rodríguez always looks tired in this film. She was a downer that made the stories around her hard to believe. >4. Other parts of the film could have been emphasised more to highlight them, to make this film stand out amongst all the other similar films out there. These are all signs of poor directing and screenwriting. > How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Average. > Teens: Average. > Young adults: Good. > Medium-age adults: Good. > Older adults: Average. > My rating: 3/5 (no half scores). A couple of minutes in to the movie, the hero jumps out of a window, holding on to a large bird. As he falls, our hero shouts "fly you big bird!"
A line which is strangely delivered with the cadence of a joke, without any of the actual content of a joke.
This is the rule, rather than the exception, unfortunately.
Like many a Disney/Marvel time-waster, the dialogue here is either exposition about the current MacGuffin hunt, trying to drive us toward the next scene, or "jokes" written by people who don't understand the concept of what a joke is.
I imagine the movie will be wildly entertaining for anyone who enjoys the Disney/Marvel franchise or who laughs at and quotes the same three adverts, that they've laughed at and quoted for the past decade, that and children under seven.
Anyone else will find this to be a trite, dull slog of a movie, which they'll have seen done better, before, repeatedly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves delivers on what it promises. There are dungeons and dragons and thieves. If you had the pleasure of watching the trailers for the past four months and also absorbed the San Diego Comic-Con press tour, you are well aware of the sight gags: fat dragons, orifices, Detective Pikachu is going to meet Bridgerton is going to meet Captain Kirk, and at some point Hugh Grant is going to be squeamishly cruel while Chris Pine is restrained like a little Japanese school girl by a tentacle monster. Also, Michelle Rodriguez is in this movie and she is going to brawl like a **** tank. All of that happens! The movie is almost as long as a full campaign but it never quite feels long? Except when Chris Pine is singing on his lute. Or really when anyone is singing along with him. Do I have some questions? Sure. Did this movie make me break out into hysterical and unexpected laughter more than once? Absolutely. Am I skeptical of the ability of this movie to replicate its success in later films? Sure. Will that impinge on your ability to enjoy this movie? Possibly!

What’s important right now is for you to know what worked and what didn’t. So, what worked? What’s clear even from the trailer is that the film has split its allotment of villains into two baskets: in one basket is the cartoonishly evil Red Wizards–shooting lightning out of their hands, throwing kittens into rivers, setting people’s babies on fire, etc.–the Voldemort basket, if you will, and in the other basket is the scoundrel-y, double-crossing, ultimately crueler because of its mundanity, the Draco basket, let’s call it. I’m a fan of splitting villains generally, whether it’s for powerscaling reasons (think goombas vs. Bowser), or because you want to be able to have some of the bad guys momentarily turn on other bad guys (think Thanos vs. Ronan the Accuser), or just because it extends the story somewhat (think Casino Royale’s distinct first and second acts).

Rick Remender’s Seven to Eternity was probably the most fun variant of the enemies to friends plot in a D&D-type story I’ve ever encountered for many of the same reasons cited above. The Mud King’s capture forces a motley band of heroes to endure some very wise cracks from the most silver of silver tongues. The forces at work to return him to power are sundry and legion, but there are all sorts who have motives for inflicting maximal pain on him before he can be brought to justice. In Honor Among Thieves, I was a little worried that the trailer had given away too much of the Red Wizard’s arc (and in some ways it does), but there’s a fair bit of interaction between the wizard and the rest of the cast, which doesn’t rely on combat to resolve itself. Probably the most satisfying villain is actually Hugh Grant, whose quick and easy lies devastate and vex by virtue of his former place as a trusted confidante.

Does Hugh Grant have a power? Is he a wizard? I ask all twelve Friends who made it to this over-invited movie event. “No, he’s just a guy.” But all the other guys can turn into bears and stuff, right? So what’s his deal? “He doesn’t have a deal. He’s just a thing.” The film does have a fair bit of excellent power scaling in it. Not every character is made equally. I think a lot about how one of my favorite parts of Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the fact that your party is composed of 1) a plumber, 2) a princess, 3) a prince made of clouds, 4) a lizard king, and 5) a **** fallen star wizard puppet that has a move that does over 9000 damage. Just so, Honor Among Thieves features a dude who can’t play the lute miming playing the lute, a brawler, a minor sorcerer, a shapeshifter, a… just normal guy with plans, I guess?, and Regé-Jean Page, skilled swordsman and powerful magical being. It means that the party has a formidable opponent to guard against big and small problems as they occur. A friend described this “everybody gets a moment” quality to the movie as reminiscent of the best elements of Phase 2 in the MCU, those Avengers moments when you’d get to see Iron Man do something badass and then maybe Cap would do something that would get the crowd cheering, etc. Kind of reminds me of how Gandalf in his infinite wisdom doesn’t call Eagles to deliver the Ring of Power to Mordor in a day’s time, but instead concocts a generations-long plan to have halflings journey for thousands of miles to assemble the forces of Man, Elf, and Dwarf to… eventually have Eagles finish the job, etc. So so much more to say but I'm hitting the word limit soon on this site!

It's like they don't want women to be attractive anymore, but guys can be? Very woke. And the main guy and his little biotch boy mage friend are bumbling idiots half the time. Strong female leads are great, but why are **** male leads the norm as well? The story was alright. It incorporates some DnD elements. But it's all about overcoming your mistakes and low confidence rather than what skills apply or clever thinking (though there are moments of clever thinking, it isn't the main message of the movie... which is to try your best and you will succeed). The gross modern elements by Goldstein and co. are what drop the score low. Expand

I enjoyed watching this film, it took its time, and it immersed you in a new world filled with wonder and time, crazy fun and wacky scenes that I never thought I'd want to see on screen.

Ok let me roll my dice here for ratings:
VFX and Practicals - 10/10, this is the perfect blend and use of visuals I have not seen in a while.

Characters - 9/10, While I don't remember all of their names, I liked every character in this movie, maybe some were sidelined a little bit but still an outstanding job.

Story and Plot 8/10, Simple, takes its time and is charming.

Comedy Factor - 8/10, not every Joke will hit especially for those not familiar with D&D but most will.

Action and Adventure - 9/10, It's all in the Journey and that's all that matters, maybe lacks some action at points but when there is action it's top tier.

This movie Hit me in the sweet spot and really did something new for a change compared to Hollywood standards.
9/10, well done, I expect a sequel and more adventures to come in the future. Everyone that had to do with the making of this film should be proud of themselves, they deserve praise and respect for the service done to the fans and the standard of movie-making.

It's not a deep or life-changing experience and for that reason it couldn't possibly get a higher score, although there are some emotional moments as well. The main character has a classic character arc, the supporting actors do a decent job of filling the roles of their characters and there are no cringe moments or political/cultural agendas that the directors want to shove down their viewers throats.
The movie is engaging and it's filled with action and laughter.

Very well written. The balance of humour and action was great and of course the special effects were top notch. I'm actually surprised the critics gave it a good score bc well, we all know how infamously unfair critics are.

Who thought a movie, based on a well known property and screwed up previously, could turn into something so entertaining, fun, and actually funny? Credit the writers of Horrible Bosses/ writers-directors of Game Night. They set the tone and it carries through the entire movie. Haven't been so entertained by a movie of this type since the original Willow. Also credit the easy going charm and devil-may-care attitude of Chris Pine, and the smarmy charm of Hugh Grant. The entire cast is game (pun intended), and look out for an enjoyable cameo midway through. Expand

I mean, I waited to watch the movie at home and didn't even bother with the big screen experience... Also, I'm no stranger to DnD or DnD movies. Oh, God... Those movies... Sorry, getting flashbacks.

I know that I almost always enjoy Chris Pine's acting and I have a soft spot for Michelle Rodriguez, so I assumed I would at least have a decent time watching this and with "The Legend of Vox Machina" out there my DnD itch was scratched... or so I think. Never before has a movie made me want to play DnD more. Never before did a movie make me actively try to gather my friends or seek out a video game or ANYTHING to just... be in the Forgotten Realms again. This movie is just fun. It's a fun watch. It's good. It's not a cinematic masterpiece but I was left wanting more! I just had fun watching a DnD movie! And it wasn't ironic fun... it was that pure, childlike fun of adventure. I really don't want to spoil anything, even by accident, so I will cut this short and I'll tell you this: there are things that make no sense in the lore and some errors here and there but in the moment, when you're watching it... none of that matters. It's just so fun! Give it a watch, you'll have fun too!

I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Got some LOTR vibes from it. The ensemble cast resemble guardians of the galaxy in many ways. Some direct copy paste action scenes paying homage to other action flics like raptor chase from Jurassic park and hulk puny god from avengers. There were a few surprises here and there and yet nothing quite blew me away. Its very good for what it is.

It is entertaining, has a lot of good humor, tons of fan service and enjoyable characters. Sadly it will be one of those movies that is really good but no one watched. Also I have seen the first D&D movie in cinema that was hilariously bad (but entertaining). This is an improvement by several levels. I bought the movie on DVD after hearing many people praised it. It was even better than I hoped for. The story starts with the bard Edgin and female barbarian Holga in a prison. They hope to be pardoned and telling the story how they got into trouble. However this is just the set up as they did not know that there was more behind it. The story fully works. All characters have their flaws, motivations and heroes journey. More movies need to do this. I liked them because I can relate to their struggles. Everyone has doubts, made decisions that backfire or dis-improves things by trying to fix them. There are also tons of lore, easter eggs and references. If you pay attention you even see the characters from the old D&D cartoon. The cast is near perfect and fits their roles. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodrigues, Sophia Lillis, Rege Jean Page, Justine Smith and all the others are excellent and have great chemistry. The bad guys are so enjoyable. I love to hate them. I should also praise the writers and directors. They made an awesome movie. Other than that I praise the humor and action scenes. Both are fully satisfying. The special effects are great too. They fit into the movie in a way that feels genuine. Overall I think I should give a 10/10. It might not be that good but it is a positive surprise and immense improvement. Also they made some positive example how to subvert expectation (In a way that I would applaud). Expand
